Kathleen - Hi and welcome to the weekly early childhood/primary chat session. This week we invite teachers of infants and toddlers to chat for this hour.
Kathleen - Cheryl will be host for the hour. If you can get a discussion going about infants and toddlers, that would be great. otherwise, just chat about other ec issues. Thanks!
bette/tx - cheryl great i will be teaching 2-3 yr in a child devepment center for teen moms at our school district
Cheryl/NH - bette, did you just recently interview for a new postion?
bette/tx - cheryl i have to do indiviual lesson plans and tryingto find sites for good info..know any?
bette/tx - cherly and my job title is child care specialist
Cheryl/NH - CONGRATULATIONS!! It will be not only working with the toddlers, but also parenting/training for the parents.
bette/tx - cheryl and also supervisoing high school students in child develpment class that come in my classroom for lab work
bette/tx - thanks cheryl
bette/tx - hello drew and ozguaradam
Cheryl/NH - bette, hold on, I'm checking on an infant site I had saved.
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup-do you have any favorite sites for toddlers? Bette will be working in the same type of a program as you do!!!
Cheryl/NH - I would recomend looking at the Creative Curriculum for Infants/Toddlers by Diane Trister Dodge. It is a great resource for the age group you will have.
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, how are things going with your program?
kiddieup - I teach 0-3 in a Continuation High School setting, I work with the teen parents, but I'm not a teen parent "program" per se
kiddieup - going better this year than last *realizing I haven't talked to you in ages!*
kiddieup - ...but still having "issues" w/my TA
Cheryl/NH - Kiddieup-I was just going to ask you about that!!! kelnes..what age group do you work with?
kiddieup - the biggest halloween issue for me and my young parents is to *NOT* do halloween....it scares the babies too much
kelnes - I work in a multi age classroom ages 3 months to four years old.
kiddieup - I wrote a blurb about it in our newsletter, were not having the babies or parents dress up, and were having a low key Autumn celebration
kiddieup - Kelnes, all in one room?
kiddieup - I'm from CA, and you folks?
kelnes - Yes it is so hard. I was in a fifth grade class and now I am trying to plan for this class. My main problem is doing lessons with the parents once a week
Cheryl/NH - Kelnes, that is a large age range. Why is your program set up that way?
kiddieup - wow, kelnes, what state are you in? CA wouldn't allow such mixing of ages (not that i'm aware of)
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, is this by anychance through the Evenstart program?
kelnes - Yes it is the Evenstart program
deb - This isn't about Halloween , but does anyone have some ideas of how to get rid of head lice?
Cheryl/NH - deb- it appears that the over the counter meds do not work as well as they once did...according to the pediatrician's office, ANYTHING high fat....
Cheryl/NH - ...such as mayonaisse or vegetable oil...saturate head, cover with a shower cap for 3 hours.
Cheryl/NH - then wash out with shampoo...use water/vinegar solution and comb to get out the eggs.
kiddieup - or coconut oil...showercap is impossible and dangerous with babies
kelnes - Cheryl/NH do you work for the Evenstart program
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, I worked for Evenstart for a while and we had a weekly PACT time (parents and children together).
kelnes - That is what we have and I always have trouble planning PACT activities
Cheryl/NH - deb, what age group is having the head lice problem?
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, are the children there too and do you have to do Halloween?
deb - Kindergarten 5 and 6
kelnes - Yes the children are there and I need to do an activity with both parents and children
deb - How can I keep them from spreading ?
Cheryl/NH - oh, ok...then the shower cap will work. It is a long and frustrating problem...here is a website for head lice http://www.headlice.org/faq/lousology.html
Cheryl/NH - Have children NOT share cubbies...paint smocks, shirts etc. need to be in a sealed plastic bag (freezer bag)..the spread of it can happen because of the coats touching each other.
Cheryl/NH - Children who have them should be checked THOUROGHLY by the school nurse before entering the classroom again.
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, do you specifically want to do Halloween?
deb - Thanks , Cheryl
kelnes - Cheryl/NH, Only for this Thursdays activity I would like to to Halloween. The parents requested it.
Cheryl/NH - you are welcome! The mayo and veggie oil was information given to me by a doctors office and was quite successful.
kiddieup - what sort of policy do you all have regarding wearing gloves ie. diapering, etc.....
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, we are required to wear gloves during diapering, sanitize changing table after each change,
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, what about a storybook character party (no Power rangers, weapons or outfits that promote violence) and read some stories that have to do with the characters?
kelnes - Cheryl/NH, What type of activities would you recommend for Pact times or do you know of web sights that would be good for me to find parent child activities?
kiddieup - a new policy we have this year is to wear a glove when you wipe a schnotty nose....we wear aprons with four large pockets where we keep a supply of gloves and tissue
Cheryl/NH - One year we had a child come as Sam I Am from Dr. Seuss and I decorated a shirt and had pocket props to go along with the song/book by Raffi..Down By the Bay
kiddieup - ...the problem is, however, that my TA basically refuses to wear gloves, even went so far as to say (during a diaper change) that it is a waste of time
Cheryl/NH - kelnes, because PACT time is through Evenstart...which is basically a literacy based program, I would try to focus on one story/book and have an art activity or other activity that goes along with it.
kelnes - Thanks for the idea I was thinking of being Blue from blues clues.
kiddieup - I've spoken to my supervisor (the principe) and she's being notfied in writing that the behavior must stop
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, is there a CA licensing law that REQUIRES the use of gloves?
kiddieup - i looked today, didn't see it...but it is universal precautions and we've had a recent training on proper gloving techniques
kelnes - That is what I have been trying to do so I guess I am on the right track. Thank you
Cheryl/NH - For example, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is a fun book (but long if you have younger children) and you could have a spagetti dinner and then paint with string on construction paper.
kiddieup - it's just infuriating to have someone tell you that a commonly known procedure is a "waste of time!" ARRRRRRRGH!
Cheryl/NH - One week, we showed the parents how to make flannel boards and story pieces.
kiddieup - Hi heidi!.......ps. I'm not here for much longer
kiddieup - cheryl....i've forgotten what you teach
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, I know what you mean..she is setting HERSELF up for catching diseases not to mention the spread of them.
Heidi - I am still in college and looking for an early childhood research topic
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, I currently teach 3 and 4 year olds, but had a multiage group prior to that ...ages 18 months through 5 years old at an adult learning center.
kiddieup - i saw the glove and schnotty nose idea at a migrant i/t center...they said it really cuts down on the spread of germs
kiddieup - heidi...how about the difference btween ECE PROFESSIONALS and ECE jobsters (like my incompetent TA?)......sorry,i had a bad day
Cheryl/NH - kiddieup, it seems that there should be some type of board of health reg on that also.
Cheryl/NH - Heidi, is early childhood your major?
Heidi - I have a question about kindergarten, do any of you know how many and which states require kindergarten?
Heidi - It is my minor, elem.ed is my major
Cheryl/NH - One issue I think would be a great research project, and would love to do sometime, is the IMPORTANCE of transition...before a child moves up to another classroom.
Cheryl/NH - Heidi, I am back in college for elem/special ed degree...have AA in early childhood. I'm not sure about the kindergarten question..here in New Hampshire it is not mandatory, but some cities/towns offer it.
Heidi - do you think I would be able to find a lot of info on that topic?
Cheryl/NH - On which...transition?
Heidi - yes
Cheryl/NH - You could check with NAEYC.org they have an article on it and their DAP book has info on it, also the ASKERIC archives may be of some use as well.
Cheryl/NH - How long does your research paper have to be?
Heidi - yes6-8 pages, I believe
Cheryl/NH - Heidi, I believe that you could find enough info...also, interview some preschool teachers..many of them have children from younger rooms. The article at naeyc.org is called Transition is a Journey
Cheryl/NH - carriJ-do you currently work with infants/toddlers?
Heidi - thank you so much, I will check that out now! bye
Cheryl/NH - You are welcome!
CarriJ - Yes I do, For many Years
Cheryl/NH - CarriJ-Welcome back...I like the new color on you! Do you currently work with infants/toddlers?
Cheryl/NH - What ages are you with?
CarriJ - We have children 6 weeks to 36 months. The space is physically divided
CarriJ - What is your age group?
Cheryl/NH - Divided within one room or separate rooms for different age groups?
Cheryl/NH - I currently work with preschool children (3 and 4 year olds). I have worked with them all, though!!
CarriJ - one room, but the space is divided
CarriJ - I work at an Early Head Start center
Cheryl/NH - So, are your children all part time as in older Head Start or full day?
CarriJ - It is on a high school campus. We have some all day. Some of our parents are students, some from the community.
Cheryl/NH - I wish you had been here earlier! There are two other teachers that are in the same type of environment as you are...it would have been great to network with them! They are bette/tx and kiddieup...in case you ever see them here or on the early childhood chatboard.
CarriJ - The teenagers add an interesting element to our program.
CarriJ - Thanks for the info.
Cheryl/NH - Yes, they do. I work in a program prior to this where the parents were working towards their GED...and some were teenage parents.
Cheryl/NH - You spend almost as much time discussing parenting skills as you do with the children.
CarriJ - They all spend one class period with us sometime during the day. I really enjoy them.
Cheryl/NH - CarriJ, please be sure to check out the early childhood chatboard here at teachersnet. There is no specific infant/toddler chatboard, but many of the teachers that post there are infant/toddler teachers.
Cheryl/NH - What a great opportunity to model for the parents! That must be great to have them involved in the program. I wish it had happened in the program I was in.
CarriJ - Yes we have discussions daily. They have so many questions, but also think they have all the answers.
Cheryl/NH - LOL--Being a teenager hasn't changed, has it!! But at least they ARE asking the questions!
Cheryl/NH - I think that the networking with each other is extremely helpful to teenage parents.
CarriJ - I have enjoyed talking with you, but I was almost logging off. I found this site accidently. I will bookmark it.
Cheryl/NH - Please do, and come back often...this is one of my FAVORITE websites. There are Early childhood chats every tuesday night, infant/toddlers once a month...I hope to chat with you again! Have a great night!
CarriJ - bye thanks again
Cheryl/NH - Goodnight, CarriJ
