Mary K&1 - Welcome to Teachers.Net monthly Reading Recovery Meeting.
Mary K&1 - Teachers.Net Reading Recovery Meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month.
Mary K&1 - We didn't set a topic - with what would you like to start?
Mary K&1 - How the discontinuing going?
Sandy - I have 3 on the brink of disc.
darthy/RR/Alabama - My topic of concern is that we are having to keep RR's TOOOOlong this year, when they are not successful
Mary K&1 - darthy, I have the same concern
darthy/RR/Alabama - I succ. discont. 2 before Thanksgiving, 1 is ready this wk, one probably won't test out
Sandy - ME,too!
Mary K&1 - dathy, that's a good record
Sandy - Darthy, that's great!!! How many lessons?
darthy/RR/Alabama - My teacher-in-training, neighbor, has had "none" to be successful, TL keeps hanging on, or wants one of us to keep trying them, Bummer
Mary K&1 - You two are doing better than me, I have two that just arent' getting anywhere, but with the new ruling, there's not much that I can do
darthy/RR/Alabama - My 2 Nov. RR's went out in the 40's, one now right at 70, this is his 20th wk.
Sandy - You're a superwoman, Darthy
darthy/RR/Alabama - What happened to the rule of checking progress at 40 lessons? Some just won't make it, and it's ruining our school records
darthy/RR/Alabama - Sandy, I'm pushy, I try really hard to get parents in BEFORE rak, to explain what's going on
Mary K&1 - darthy, someone thought that we were giving up on some kids too soon, I guess
Sandy - Darthy, are most of your parents cooperative??
darthy/RR/Alabama - Our T -in-training has one being tested for LD, still having to hang on to her, I think it's not going to work
darthy/RR/Alabama - Sandy, this is our 7th yr. & a lot of parents already know what we do, We are having younger brothers and sisters of earlier RR's
Sandy - this is my third year. I am the only rr teacher in district
nette - darthy: iI am runing int o that
Sadie/CA - boy, darthy, it sure shows the family influence when you get siblings doesn't it?
darthy/RR/Alabama - I DO NOT like the new 20 wks. rule. YOU know a favorite phrase in RR is "It depends on the child!!"
nette - we only have five rr teachers
nette - that is not a new rule,,the twenty weeks
Sandy - What is the 20 wk rule?
Sadie/CA - Sandy, that must be really hard. At the West Coast RR conference last year Becky Shook said that many of the problems in RR disappear when you are fully implemented.
darthy/RR/Alabama - Boy, Sandy, that is rough when you are "alone" You may e-mail me when you need to vent!!!
nette - Sadie: ain't it thetruth?
Sandy - I'm pushing for it, but it's hard to find someone to train.
nette - I am the only one in my building: very hard
LC in Mo - How long do you keep kids? This is my training year and I'm up to lesson 65 with some, which is close to the 20 weeks. We had several weeks of only 1 day. I hate counting that as a week.
Pam - Hi all , first time in a chat -second year RR-Sage school-3 classrooms of about 12 each served
darthy/RR/Alabama - I'm only referring to the "new" rule of keeping the ones who are not going to be successful for the full 20 wks.
Mary/WA - I'd love to be trained -- that's why I hang around here! My district won't do it -- not cost effective enough.
Mary K&1 - How many here are in districts that are fully implemented?
Sadie/CA - I am lucky. We have 85 1st graders and 4 RR teachers at my school (including our TL).
darthy/RR/Alabama - LC, I also hate counting the weeks with only 1 or 2 days as a full week
Sadie/CA - Mary, our whole district is not fully implem. but we are only 2 yrs into the program. We should be in the next few years.
Sandy - I was at a confer. with Clay this summer. Really stressed the import. of full implementation
Mary K&1 - Sadie, that's wonderful!
Pam - We have a large percentage of ESL students
nette - its toooexpensive to fully implement
Sandy - Sadie, you are sooooo lucky
Sadie/CA - darthy, me too! I have been off-track and when i return next week we have 3 short weeks in a row. No way to get 5 lessons in!
darthy/RR/Alabama - Woah!! We are cost effective, BUT some dist. supers are hardheaded about the program
nette - they don't see RR as cost effective
Gigi/MO - I was the only one for the last two years but finally have a teacher being trained in my building!! in training
nette - Sadie: have that problem all the time
Sandy - I think we should count lesson instead of weeks
Sadie/CA - nette, cheaper than a lifetime of resource!!
LC in Mo - I have 4 first grades but only serve 2, we hope to be fully implemented next year. Where in St. Louis?
darthy/RR/Alabama - My county is almost fully implemented, after 7 yrs., A few principals are still holding out
nette - tell our administration that
Sadie/CA - nette, in California K teachers teach only half day. So i do K in the am and rr in the pm. Basically, beyond training and materials I am costing the district nothing.
nette - Sadie: I teach reading in the afternoon
darthy/RR/Alabama - Along with my complaint about keeping unsuccessful RR's too long, I HATE counting 1 & 2 days as weeks
nette - I don't know why they think we are so expensive, seems foolishness to me
Sadie/CA - Sandy, me too. but in some ways i see the point. If the lessons are not consistent it can hurt the integrity of the program. I guess they don't want people doing 2-3 lessons/week and taking all year to do "20 weeks"
nette - I don't like the test bookets either
darthy/RR/Alabama - Sadie, does that mean you have a decent salary, or half of a salary???
Pam - the first grade teachers at my school are reluctant to take kids out of the program at 20 weeks even when progress seems to indicate they should be and I feel as though I've let the child down- anybody else deal with that?
Mary K&1 - darthy, I feel the same, but there's not much that we can do about it, I guess
Doug - Hello Sadie
nette - Me: hand raised over hre Pam
nette - I am so glad to hear this from other rr teachrs
darthy/RR/Alabama - Wish I could rip up that Level 7 "Mr. Jumble" YUK
nette - ROFL::that is so funny
Sadie/CA - darthy, K teachers in california teach either am or pm and get a full salary. they are supposed to spend the rest of the day in a school directed way... I do RR
Sandy - Mr. Jumble...AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!Just tested Title one kids on it today!
nette - how about that really stupid one:wait a minute
Mary K&1 - Doug, keeping kids 20 weeks even when there's little progress - that's the topic right now
nette - they are all stupid
Sadie/CA - Pam, it is hard to change the teachers' perception of the child being the lowest in the class.
nette - i just tested two kids: both level 6s
Sandy - nette, I agree!!
nette - I stopped seeing them: 18 weeks
darthy/RR/Alabama - Pam, we had that problem in the past. Now we have copies of the basals they are using, and practice in them about 3-4 wks. before disc. That makes our 1st teachers SOOOOO happy
nette - :) sandy: I hope they change what we use
nette - I didn't think they had a chance to graduate
LC in Mo - So what happens to the kids dismissed but not tested out? My classroom teachers are asking Do we just give up?
Sandy - Darthy, when do you do the basals...familiar reading?
Sadie/CA - We had a child discontinue at a level 18 last year. the teacher had her at a level 7 in class.
nette - nope
nette - work with them: there are plenty of other kids to see on a one to one basis
darthy/RR/Alabama - I bought the alternate set of testing books to use as practice books, They are not much of an improvement.
nette - no way Sadie: talk about under estimating someone
nette - no they are not Darthy
Pam - I am finding a difference in RR level and class level with one student right now too
darthy/RR/Alabama - Yes, Sandy, Just pick out about 2 pages as one of the famil. rdg.
darthy/RR/Alabama - Pam, won't be the first or last time
Sandy - Do any of your teachers do guided reading with leveled books?
LC in Mo - How can I get the classroom teacher to up the students level? I've one reading Level 16 but in class the teacher has her in about a 9.
Sadie/CA - Yes, our entire district is expected to do guided reading
Mary K&1 - Sandy, not in my school
darthy/RR/Alabama - If our RR's do not test out, they are usually tested by spec. ed, or will need to repeat a grade
Doug - Sandy- every day with my K's
Sadie/CA - LC do you have a good relationship with the teacher?
Mary/WA - Sandy, since we can't do RR, that's what SOME of my teachers are doing. I've leveled every book that I can level.
Sandy - Sadie, that's great!
LC in Mo - I have one trying to do guided reading but she doesn't have enough levels
darthy/RR/Alabama - @ of our 5 1st teachers are trying guided reading this yr. Others still have EVERYBODY on same page, same book, same time It gets old
Doug - LC- literature study may be the way to go then
Pam - Most of the time i find that its safest to have the child at an average grade level than class average because the teachers don't see that a student reading at the average band of the classroom can make it
Sandy - I do guided reading with a first gr. teacher. The others refuse to do it/
LC in Mo - I think I do. I've suggested she challenge the student but it doesn't seem to happen.
Pam - Our first grade teachers are in their second year of using leveled books but I am not sure that they are cueing kids effectively
darthy/RR/Alabama - LC, I have generated my own books using the new PrintShop and my computer
Sadie/CA - mary.wa... I was thinking about you the other day. I was ordering books and saw that most of the cataloges had RR levels in them. you should call every publisher you can think of and tell them to send you any catalogs with RR levels.
Doug - Sandy- is your principal in favor of early balanced literacy?
Sandy - Darthy...I know what you're saying. Tested 2 kids in one class at level 3 and teacher had them in a book about lev10
Mary/WA - Thanks, Sadie. Wish that Scholastic had theirs leveled....
Sandy - Doug, my principal is clueless!!!
darthy/RR/Alabama - Back 7 yrs. ago, my TL had us practice leveling books, so go for those Schol. Bks.
Sadie/CA - LC, i had a similar problem. i invited the teacher to come watch a lesson and then shared the levels we were using. It seemed to help. She moved her up.
darthy/RR/Alabama - Doug, MY principal is in favor of what ever is the LEAST troublesome to her!!!
Mary K&1 - How much are each of you permitted to spend each yoear on new books and materials?
Mary/WA - Darthy, the prob is that I'm NOT RR trained. =(
LC in Mo - I know she'd like to come watch, maybe I can work something out.
Doug - There is a school (not mine) that asks for running record error percentages every month from a random sample. Keeps everyone from flatlining.
Sadie/CA - Hey, my principal just told me that he is thinking of training next year. he says he really wants to undertand more about Rr and learning to read.
Mary K&1 - Last year we were each given $750
kinderkate(KK) - OK - but we've been told we cannot share the Reading Recovery levels with other than RR teachers.
Sandy - I'm fortunate to be in Title 1 school. She never really put a limit on me
Sadie/CA - Doug, our teachers have to hand in running records and levels of all of their kids at the end of each quarter
Mary K&1 - Doug, we have to do that all the time. Isn't it done that way every where?
kinderkate(KK) - Does he realize he will have to have 4 program kids - that it is not just training?< sadie
Mary/WA - Could an "outsider" ask a question? Why the big mystery -- as KK points out -- about the levels that RR gives to books??
darthy/RR/Alabama - KK, the RR levels are in bunches of catalogues now, so what difference could your sharing make?? We did a 1st grade workshop on that to help ours
darthy/RR/Alabama - Sadie, for real???
Sadie/CA - mary, our TL orders us books and supplies ea. year. I don't know of the cost.
Sandy - Doug, that's a good idea...if you can get the teachers to do it. Do your teachers knowhow to do rr?
Mary/WA - I.E., the fact that ONLY certified RR teachers can get the level book.
Mary K&1 - You have to pay for the list, maybe they don't like us giving it away for free
darthy/RR/Alabama - Mary, I don't think it should be a mystery, but I DO think 1st gr. teachers need to have a workshop to explain it
Sadie/CA - kinder, no he won't. there is a special waiver of something for administrators. At one district in northern california, all of the principals trained. They only do 1 student.
Doug - Sandy -we are a CELL school. Everyone in K -3rd gives out the OS. 3rd only TR and DIC.
Mary/WA - Mary, I wouldn't mind paying for the list, honest! But the websites say I have to be RR trained.
Sandy - Doug, that's fantastic!
Sadie/CA - mary, our district bought the rights to the leveling guide so that we could use it for other teachers.
kinderkate(KK) - I think it is because the RR levels are in copyrighted publications. However, some publishers put out their own lists with their leveling and RR levels that are available to all.
LC in Mo - I doubt I get any money next year for additional books since we hope to add another teacher. What can I use to tell them I need more books?
Doug - Sandy- wanta be wowed---there are 8 RR teachers at our school and our principal is also trained
darthy/RR/Alabama - We get our regualr $500 supply money and buy some books with that.
kinderkate(KK) - Do the classroom teachers at your schools get money for classroom libraries? Ours do and we get the same amount .
Sandy - Doug, I'm DEFINITELY wowwwed!!
Sadie/CA - Doug, does your principal do 1 student?
darthy/RR/Alabama - Our school has business adoptors. Could you get a business to "adopt" your RR program and but books for you each yr???
kinderkate(KK) - WOW doug - how many first graders? What else do the RR teachers do?
Mary/WA - $500 for supplies???? I get $25 and it has to be spent through one catalog.
Doug - She does not go to the continuing contact meetings and does BTG, so she is out of the loop.
Doug - KK 150
darthy/RR/Alabama - Doug, I'm IMPRESSED!!! Where are you??
kinderkate(KK) - HEY - I did my first behind the glass last week!!!!!!!!!!!
Mary K&1 - How often do you have to turn in your records? We have to turn in WV Chart, Text Level Chart, Attendance, Daily log & Predictions of Progress every month.
Doug - We attack 50%. I am in Colton CA. We are getting a new superintendent so things might change
Sadie/CA - Mary, you will hate me..... each teacher (classroom) got $1000 to spend on books.... preferably for guided reading.
Sandy - Haven't turned anything in since training except monthly level report
kinderkate(KK) - We turn in our book list every week.
Gigi/MO - Way to go, KK!! How did it go??
Sadie/CA - Mary, we hand in WV, attendance and text level chart
Doug - KK- give a copy to your first grade teachers also. Keeps them posted....
kinderkate(KK) - ************KK just fainted after sadies comment about $$$$$$$$********
darthy/RR/Alabama - OH, my gosh, PLEASE don't let that once a month record turning in get back to my system, we go for about 3 times a yr.
Mary K&1 - Sadie, how often?
Mary/WA - Oh wow, Sadie. Almost every book that I use -- except for those that were bought with the (dare I say it here) phonics grant money, have been paid for out of my pocekt.
Sadie/CA - once a month (at continuing contact) Training class hands it in everyweek
kinderkate(KK) - I think pretty well - I got a lot of compliments and good suggestions. I just glad it is over.
Sandy - Sadie, do you have continuing contact every month?
Pam - Lately when I ask about money for booksthe answer is write a grant
darthy/RR/Alabama - I don't even know what $1000 to spend on books would mean, I'd go crazy
Doug - I am hitting 2nd round. Starting at level 5
Mary K&1 - We don't have CC in Dec. and Jan,
Sadie/CA - yes, Sandy. How about you?
darthy/RR/Alabama - Sadie, CC "once a month" ?? We have 4 times a yr.
Sadie/CA - hey, mary... we need more classroom teachers like you!
Sandy - We have six a school year. Tomorrow is our next.
Doug - mary- but Sadie and I have to live in Southern Ca
Mary/WA - Darthy, I got to spend 3k last year to buy books for the building. BTW -- is Wright Group still selling Classic Sunshines at 50% off?
Sadie/CA - darthy, really? i look forward to our classes! I enjoy the feedback
LC in Mo - Do you write books in Roaming on the second go round? What do you do besides read?
darthy/RR/Alabama - One of my second wave RR's is on L-6, One is on L-5, but going to have to return to 4
Sandy - I hate to say this, but I hate roaming in second rounders
Sadie/CA - Boy, i'm still in my first round. This year-round schedule is killing me!
Sandy - Sadie, I'm still in first too
darthy/RR/Alabama - I follow the same basic plan for 2nd wave RAK's, but am able to make longer books, with more vocabulary. Sometimes I'll replace book with a related craft
Mary K&1 - Sandy, I like Roaming with 2nd rounders - we can read and write more
LC in Mo - I'm not looking forward to it. Wish it could be shorter.
Mel - Is reading recovery state or federal funded?
Gigi/MO - We have CC 6 times a year, too!!
Doug - LC- I have heard that some teachers sneak a little teaching in RAK LOL
Sandy - This year is the first time I really enjoyed roaming in first round. Maybe I'll like second better, too!
Pam - iI use the student's WV and work with magnetic letters on those words
darthy/RR/Alabama - Mel, it depends in the system. Mine is funded through Title I
Sadie/CA - Mel, i believe it is funded at the local level. I think most districts use Title 1 funds.
LC in Mo - Mel, it depends on your school district
Julia - 10 days of roaming is a long time when you can see what they need to learn so quickly!
Sadie/CA - Doug! I would NEVER do such a thing.... and admit to it!
Sandy - I just wish roaming was shorter for second round
darthy/RR/Alabama - Doug, at our Southeastern RR Conference Jan 14-15, the presenters called it "modeling" NOT teaching in second wave RAK
Pam - Mel-Title 1 funds RR in my school
Mel - I wish we had RR in my distict. They just throw in the teachers with no training in teaching remedial reading
Sadie/CA - Mel, where are you?
Sandy - Mel, title 1 in my school, too
Mel - I'm in New Mexico
Julia - Reading Recovery is the best thing I have ever learned. I don't know how I taught reading before
darthy/RR/Alabama - So, Doug, are you into "modeling" for your 2nd wavers??
Sadie/CA - julia, ain't that the truth!
Sandy - Julia, I agree. I've really changed my way of thinking
darthy/RR/Alabama - Amen, Julia, I love it
Doug - darthy- I will never tell...my TL might be watching
Mary K&1 - We're having trouble staying in the room tonight?
Sadie/CA - That's why my principal wants to train. He keeps hearing that from us... (and he is married to a RR teacher)
Julia - Anybody from South Carolina?
Doug - I have a gripe....I HATE OBSERVATION SUMMARIES!!!!!
Sandy - PA here
Mary K&1 - Before we leave, do we want to set a topic for next month? I think that we forget to do this last month
Sandy - Doug..SO DO I!!!!!!!!
Gigi/MO - I think 5 days of RAK would be enough but I'll keep on with 10 until I hear differently!! Title 1 pays for our RR program!!
Mary K&1 - Doug, I agree totally!!!
darthy/RR/Alabama - Yes, let's set a topic, then I can send it to all of the RR teachers in my system
Julia - Who reads those obersvation surveys anyway??????????
Sandy - NOBODY READS THEM!!!
darthy/RR/Alabama - Topic: How about RAK Roaming with 2nd wave, Do we have to do 10???
Sadie/CA - Do we want to talk about 2nd round roaming and ideas for it?
Sadie/CA - darthy, great minds think alike!
Sandy - Darthy, good idea
Julia - That sounds good to me, we all need ideas for 2nd wave
LC in Mo - Topic sounds good, hopefully I'll be on to the second round.
Mary K&1 - As soon as you start Roaming , the OS becomes out dated - you always notice something that didn't show up during the Observation
Doug - Mary- I want to learn more about echoing. I keep hearing from the veteran's that they can echo a strategy accross all parts of a lesson.
Pam - I work really hard on them but I don't much feel like doing them for the second round
Sandy - Doug, isn't that where your focus comes in?
Sadie/CA - That's a good topic, Doug. We often look for echoes btg
darthy/RR/Alabama - Yeah, Doug, that was a "hot" topic at our RR conference
Doug - Mary- Ohio State now says that they are only valid for 3 weeks. Yuk!
Julia - Not all veterans can do that, sometimes it just kind of happens
LC in Mo - Is anyone going to Columbus in Feb?
Sadie/CA - mary, our TL calls roaming an extension of the OS. We don't complete our summaries until we are done roaming (if we want)
Mary K&1 - Doug, that's what we're supposed to be doing, but sometimes it just dosen't work out right
Sadie/CA - 3 weeks! I hadn't heard that!
Pam - Some times I am surprised how something will show up in one part of the lesson without planning it
Sandy - Sadie, that makes sense
Gigi/MO - I don't mind doing the front page but it is the back page that gets me!!
darthy/RR/Alabama - Mary, fill out papers for repeating the grade
Mary K&1 - Next Month - Roaming and Echoing? Is that what has been said here?
darthy/RR/Alabama - Yeaaa! Roaming and Echoing!!
Pam - I mean that a word in writing will demonstrate the idea from the M&B part of the lesson done that day
Sadie/CA - mary k/1 that sounds good.
Doug - If we can get a computer person to write several summaries in hypersudio...we can enter OS scores and have a narrative for the scores....really. I just don't write in hypertext or hyperstudio. just an idea
darthy/RR/Alabama - Mary, report it to child services, whatever it is called in your state
Sadie/CA - Doug, did you just hear that recently?
Mary K&1 - I find it very interesting how differently RR is administered in different parts of the Country
Pam - Feels great when the loose ends come neatly together in a lesson-echoes
Doug - Sadie- no just thought of it.
Mary K&1 - So many of you do things the way I think they should be done - much more sensable than the way we do it around here
darthy/RR/Alabama - Good Phrasing, Pam
Julia - Mary Fried from Ohio State said it should only take 30 minutes to complete an OS, takes me a bit longer
Sadie/CA - doug, I meant the 3 week rule (though i like your idea!)
Shari - Hi- I am a RR teacher and just found this site. Is there a mailring or anything else about RR?
Sadie/CA - What do you mean, mary?
darthy/RR/Alabama - Julia, takes me longer too
Sandy - Mary F. is a trip. SHe can msv while doing a rr
Mary K&1 - Well. for one - doing the OS after Roaming
Sadie/CA - hi shari, I don't think there is a RR mailring, though that's a great idea.
darthy/RR/Alabama - I hope there is a mailring? Where is it??
Doug - Shari- global.net has a Reading Recovery mailring.
Mary K&1 - Another, if you teach Kinder, you only have 3 RR students or get paid extra because of the lack of plan time, for another
Mary K&1 - Not turning in records every month for another
Julia - http://gsn.org/lists/info/readrecov
Doug - Mary - that is me
Gigi/MO - My OS usually take about 2 HOURS!!
Doug - Julia - that is right...global school network
Sandy - Gigi...me too!
Shari - Thanks for the info on global.net. Is this the only time you get info on RR from teachers.net?
Doug - Gigi- I have to turn the TV off when I do them
darthy/RR/Alabama - Gigi, I noticed, last yr., that I was writing more than my TL on my OS
Julia - Does anybody get paid for not having planning time? I'm confused
Dar - Has anyone else read the book Apprenticeship in Literacy by Dorn, French and Jones? Excellent language and information to use with groups and individuals. Best I've read.
Mary K&1 - There's a RR mailring in PA, send and email to Dr. Janet Bufalino at jmbufa@wharf.ship.edu and ask to be added to the list.
Doug - Dar- Clay has a new book too
Pam - Dar I have heard many good things about the book- it will be my next buy
Dar - Doug. Yes, I've just started to read it. Easier than her first book...Becoming Literate,
darthy/RR/Alabama - Well, Dar, a lot of things are easier to read than Becoming Lit
Pam - Anyone going to the RR conv. in Chicago 2-21
darthy/RR/Alabama - Pam, our Southeastern Conference was Jan 14-15, Greensboro, NC, It was great!!
LC in Mo - I'm going to Columbus, can't wait!
Julia - It makes sense to write the OS after roaming. Then you have a clearer picture about what the child can do and what you can build on
Shari - I'm going to the Ohio Conference the 4th of Feb.
Pam - Julia, That makes better sense to me too
darthy/RR/Alabama - Julia, I've been in RR 7 yrs., but we have just been told about writin the OS after Roaming
Julia - I went to g'boro too. It was the best yet
Gigi/MO - I'm going to a CC class with Linda Dorn this Wed.!! She is talking on M and B!! I went to Dallas in Nov.!!
Julia - This is my 7th year too. Never heard of it before but I'll certainly speak with my TL about it.
Pam - I'll look forward to next month
Pam - Any one have any tricks to encourage fluency?
Gigi/MO - Pam--Push reading the text with a card!!
Dar - Pam, drop them down a level or two for a few lessons, and/or make sure the rereads are very easy (3 levels lower than inst.), use phrasing in the cut up sentence to model and encourage fluency, read every other page to model fluency. Does that help, Pam?
Dar - Jewel, RR is a balanced approach that includes phonemic cues in both reading and writing.
Pam - Sounds as though I am doing some of the right things
Pam - I have students who do fairly well with accuracy but don't move up because they can't get things moving together quickly-slow processing
Pam - THese seem to be the ones that should be withdrawn at 20 weeks
Dar - Pam, that's where the value of just right rereads come in. They are able to practice processing on the run. There should be a bit of a challenge.
Pam - I'll take extra care on the rereads- thanks-
Mary K&1 - Well folks, I have to go now also, Thanks for coming, see you next month
