kat/Kathleen - Hi!! Ready to talk about how we teach math concepts?
Gumbo/K/La - kat------I really do enjoy these meetings---- I do hope they are continued!!!!!!!! :-)
kat/Kathleen - Gumbo, they'll continue as long as there is a Teachers.Net and an interest!
Gumbo/K/La - thanks, kat!!!! addie------I wish we had internet in the class..... :-(
Jane*K*MO - I love using the Box It Bag It materials to teach math.
Amy k/va - Me too, gumbo!
kat/Kathleen - Jane, tell me about Box it Bag it, not Familiar..like Math Their Way?
betsy - I think this is great.I teach in rural Nebraska and am the only K teacher in my district so I'm always wanting to talk with other K teachers!
Gumbo/K/La - jane----that's what we use---but I've never had any training......
Jane*K*MO - Box It Bag It was an outgrowth of MTW.
canuk - Has anyone seen the "box cars and one eyed jacks" programme uses playing cards and dice
kat/Kathleen - betsey, this is a great site for early childhood teachers, lots of them here. We have an Early Childhood chatboard, a mailring for EC..after the meeting, check out the homepage for all that we offer http://www.teachers.net
kat/Kathleen - Jane, how is it different from MTW (if it is diff)?
Gumbo/K/La - .....so don't know if I'm doing it to the fullest......
Jane*K*MO - Donna Burke and a couple of other teachers want to extend MTW but after the orginator of MTW was murdered, Her heirs would not allow them to change it.
Addie k/mo - i use mtw also. really like it, very hands on
Amy k/va - I use mtw also
kat/Kathleen - I think something came up to prevent Anne from being here with us tonight..may be she'll come in later
Jane*K*MO - They developed concept boxes that provides individualize practice for the children. You will have 15 -20 individual boxes for each skill.
betsy - I've tried MTW but find it too much. I try to do the basic skills but gave up the tub system years ago. I have heard about Everyday Math..anyone familiar?
canuk - How about Quest 2000 and Interactions?
kat/Kathleen - What do you think is the strength of Math Their Way in terms of the concepts it "teaches"
Amy k/va - Towards the end of the year, use a lot of food to teach adding and subtracting. Eating it is taking away!
kat/Kathleen - I have heard of but not used Everyday math, tell us more betsey
Amy k/va - I think to MTW calendar teaches so much!
Gumbo/K/La - canuk----getting math quest 2000 this year---went to workshop....way toeasy for my school.........
Jane*K*MO - It is a lot of work to develop the concept boxes but they make a wonderful learning center as well as directed instruction'
Gumbo/K/La - jane----can you give an example of a concept box???
betsy - I am going to teach all day/everyday next year(after 19 years of half day) so I am going to need more reinforcement activities for all areas..do any of you do all day everyday? All I know about everyday Math is that they uses the calendar alot...
Addie k/mo - i think mtw's strengths include the fact that it emphasizes hands on instruction, provides ample practice with concepts, each major concept is introduced and practiced in a variety of ways allowing for individual differences, the tubbing system allows student choice within the framework of assigned activities, the calendar provides daily practice/reinforcement with almost every math skill taught at the k level.
Amy k/va - Good statement, Addie!!!
Amy k/va - Betsy, I know Addie and I teach all day every day.
Jane*K*MO - Well, for teaching patterning, you have one box where the children make quilt blocks to use a pattern, another box uses rubber stamps that the child can use to show patterning, still another box has pattern blocks for the children to use to create different patterns
Becca - What's the real difference between Box-it Bag-it and MTW ? I have access to both
betsy - maybe with full day schedule i willl be able to better use MTW tubs..I just could seem to get it all done in half day.
Gumbo/K/La - all day everyday here.......
Amy k/va - Are they used as centers then, Jane?
Gumbo/K/La - jane---thanks.........
Anne/K/Fl - Hi, I was leading the workshop in another chatroom.
Amy k/va - I use my MTW tubs for centers most of the time.
Lori V. - Hi again Anne, thought I would follow you into here!
Sheri - Hello, everyone, does anyone use Box it Bag it?
Jane*K*MO - I guess that with MTW you use tubs of manipulatives, where Box It Bag it you have individual activities in each box.
Lori V. - Has anyone done the second part of Box It Bag it?
Addie k/mo - i have FDK...we do math for approximately 60 minutes per day (not all at once) we do the tubbing stations, small group lessons, mathboard (calendar, etc.) and a whole class mini lesson daily
kat/Kathleen - Hi, all! (I was distracted by e-mail) Welcome to our Early Chidlhood meeting about Math programs
Anne/K/Fl - Thanks Lori how about if you and I team up.
Lori V. - Sheri I do along with our math series, I finally took the 2nd part of it.
Jane*K*MO - I will next year, I also used it for directed instruction, with amixed age group.
betsy - oops..I meant to say I just could NOT seem to get MTW tubs in my half day
Lori V. - Anne I don't get down your way very often, mostly North East.
kat/Kathleen - Anne, I didn't see you! are there people in the other room??
Di - Anyone mind a silent observer?
Erin - Where can I find Joe Bonsall?
Anne/K/Fl - I like to do graphs, estimations, and predictions.
kat/Kathleen - Di, please, just do as you wish and be comfortable!! :-)
Becca - Hi Lori, It's Becky from Ky. What's the second part of Box-it
Jane*K*MO - Lori, is that the problem solving stuff?
Anne/K/Fl - Yes, Kat we were discussing math.
Lori V. - I absolutely love graphing, so much to gain from it.
Gumbo/K/La - I try to do more graphing each year.......kids and I enjoy it.....
Lori V. - Becca Box It Bag It has 2 parts, I just wasn't impressed with the 2nnd part
kat/Kathleen - I'll go see if anyone is there.BRB. ANNE IS OUR HOST, HELLO ANNE! :-)
Anne/K/Fl - I wrote 365 yes or no questions for graphing.
Lori V. - Jane Box It Bag It is the modern MTW
Addie k/mo - i do math tubs first thing in the morning from 7:55 to 8:20...i have kids straggling in all this time, so dont want to do anything whole class. i pull aside a small group to work with also at about 8:05 or so when most of that team arrives. some kids miss out though, if they are eating breakfast or later arriving
Jane*K*MO - I think the more ways we find to teach a concept and the more ways we provide for the children to use the skill, the better they will learn it
Gumbo/K/La - Anne!!!!!!!! wow!!!!1
Lori V. - Anne Neat. Do you reccommend that systems use a math series?
Sheri - Lori, what do you mean by the second part? I've learned a lot from your posts. I respect your opinion!
Anne/K/Fl - Hi, I would like to give you some of my math background. I am a math wiz, a professional numerologist, and a math trainer for Creative Publications.
Addie k/mo - that's right, jane...one way may not make sense to a child, so we have to present things a variety of ways to reach all of the kids.
Amy k/va - Lori, I love graphing too. We graph about everything throughout the year!
Lori V. - Sheri Box It Bag It is actaully a 2 part course. You have to have used it in your room for one year before taking the second aprt. Mostly extension stuff. Thanks..I guess you noticed that I am more of a reading person...LOL
Becca - Is Box-it Bag-it not as popular? I've seen tons of posts about MTW, but none about BBwhich is what I learned doing Kindergarten my first year
Anne/K/Fl - Math people say there is only one subject in school: Math.
Addie k/mo - i have b-it/b-it, but havent been able to motivate myself to make all the cutesy stuff (i have lots of manips in my room) do you see an advantage to b-it/b-it?
Addie k/mo - come back here, but it is tomorrow nite
Amy k/va - Anne, how much math do you incorporate into the day?
Jane*K*MO - Lori, I've taken the Box it course three times and each time I learn something new>
Lori V. - Anne Maybe we should team up then do a math literature thing...LOL
Lori V. - Addie We teamed up to make the stuff so I made the penguins for say 5 people and they made me stuff..fun fun fun
Sheri - I've used some of the Box it seasonal activities. They're pretty good.
Anne/K/Fl - I do a math journal, calendar math, amath center, and math lessons during the day total of at least 1 hour aday.
Lori V. - Jane I just thought the first part had a lot more info than the 2nd, but I do like it.
Jane*K*MO - Lori, there are several books that incorporate math and lit.
betsy - I try to do graphing, estimating and patterning each day. I have parents ask WHY I do so much with patterning...any suggestions on how I respond to that? I know why but it's hard to explain to them
Jane*K*MO - Lori, there are several books that incorporate math and lit.
Addie k/mo - another thing that i have done some, but want to do more of is incorporating origami (paper folding) and tangram puzzles into my math instruction.
Becca - Lori, didn't you get tired. I just made enough for me and I would get so sick of say polar bears
Anne/K/Fl - The Math, Reading, and Writing Connection is addressed in some new materials by Creative.
Lori V. - Betsy You could carry patterns right into texts, since early lit is reliant on patterned texts.
Poppy/CA - I have attended 2 math workshops by Kim Sutton.... her ideas are fantastic and very easy to incorporate. Lots of practical ideas.
Lori V. - Becca I hear ya it was boring but I felt since other people were depending on me I was forced to do it...
Sheri - How does everyone use the Box it storyboxes (or workjobs)?
Jane*K*MO - our number systemis based upon patterns, when students understand how numbers are related to each other, then it starts to make sense , when they move on to sets and basic facts
Anne/K/Fl - Poppy, please tell us more.!
Lori V. - Sheri I had my student teacher make the workjobs she loved doing it.
Gumbo/K/La - ....paterning helps the kids see patterns in numbers and words.......
Jane*K*MO - Sheri, I use the story boxes to co-ordinate math and story writing
Addie k/mo - i tell parents that patterning is the foundation for all mathematics and here in kindergarten we are laying the groundwork for future learning. everything in math is based upon patterns...for instance once you learn the counting sequence through nine, it begins to repeat itself...then you learn the counting by 10's which is a variation of the 0-9 pattern. if you had to learn each numeral as a separate piece of information it would be much more difficult than to learn this pattern and apply it to larger numerals.
Lori V. - I am worried because our new math series requires 50 minutes per day to fit everything in. Hoping I have time for other math stuff
Anne/K/Fl - Workjobs are creative and allow a lot of exploration for young children.
Becca - I hate to admit it but I had so much stuff that I made and never used last year because it was my first year in first. I plan on getting back into it. You guys have inspired me. Yeah!
betsy - I want to do more of what I call"mental math" where the kidss have to THINK about the problem. I would like to do story porblems, later on bring in the writing of the problem and eventually have the helper of the day work the problem..
Lo/gr2/Ohio - Hi, Anne....I saw something about the math facts.....how do you all teach them???
Poppy/CA - She recommended, and I have done this.... if you use an estimation jar, fill it with very large objects for the first round. I begin with ping pong balls. The kids can estimate pretty closely.
Sheri - Lori, what is your new math series?
Di - Me, too, Lo. This is all new to me.
Lori V. - Becca I sue it mostly for math centers, in first
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, that is fantastic the way you relate that to the parents.
Anita - Hi Everyone! I just came from my grad class on critical thinking and math and was happy to see that we are talking about math tonight
aggie/1/ca - That's the problem w/my math series, too, Lori. You could spend way more than an hour on each lesson! We use Everyday Math.
Lori V. - Sheri We jsut adopted SRA, used to have Addison Wesley
Hazel/3/FL - We have a new math series this year too.
Anne/K/Fl - Facts in your pocket is a cute game that lets children have fun with math facts. Has anyone heard of that game?
Hazel/3/FL - It's Silver Burdett Ginn, I think I am going to like it, many problem solving activities
Becca - We're getting McGraw Hill. Anyone else have it?
Lori V. - I am just hoping that can get some inspiration to become more of a math person
aggie/1/ca - I haven't Anne. Can you tell us about it?
Lo/gr2/Ohio - I am in the process of doing a collaborative action research paper on memorizing basic math facts and cooperative learning groups for my Master's.....
Hazel/3/FL - also many ways to solve the same problem
Becca - We're getting McGraw Hill. Does anyone else have it?
Anita - Anyone use Mathland?
Addie k/mo - i would like to set up an "estimation station" and just have it as something the kids do when they have free time. at the end of the month you could look at all the estimates and the closest one could win the items if you used m/ms or peanuts or something they would want. a different item each month
Sheri - We have, Addison Wesley, there's no way you can do all of those workbook pages, and ever have time for anything else!
Jane*K*MO - my students LOVE the incredible equations
Anne/K/Fl - Have any of you done a Math night for parents and children?
aggie/1/ca - Same here, Lori!
Lo/gr2/Ohio - Anne, tell me about it...
Lori V. - aggie I hear ya, and you really need to do all the components since they are so dependent on one another
Addie k/mo - please explain, anne
Gumbo/K/La - we're getting math quest 2000 and scott-foresman.........supposed to use the S-F to 'supplement' math quest.......
Jane*K*MO - Sheri, with B-
Di - My school just adopted SB&G also.
Addie k/mo - do you have to do all the wb pages???
Lori V. - Sheri We had used AW for years.
Jane*K*MO - Sheri, with B-i-
Anne/K/Fl - Anita, I train teachers to use Mathland. I love the program, Do you use Mathland?
Erin - I do illustrations for Silver B/Ginn, McGraw Hill and Weekly Reader, anyone need any artwork for the workbooks, etc.?
aggie/1/ca - I have, anne. We have a family math/science night every year.
Lori V. - Anne The math night is a great idea
Hazel/3/FL - We don't, but this year at our classroom Town Meeting I am going to have parents do some math instead of listening to me
Anita - No, but I am going to iinterview at a school district that does. I know it uses alot of manipulatives. Is that true?
Jane*K*MO - Sheri, with B-I-B-I you don't do all of those workbooks pages
Addie k/mo - erin, how did you get into that?
Lori V. - I have a running record night where I show my parents how to get nfo from them, love the idea of a math night
Poppy/CA - I use decks of cards quite a bit, and the children love them (for math of course) If you write to the casinos in Las Vegas, they will donate decks to your classroom.
aggie/1/ca - You use cards quite a bit in Everyday Math as well.
Gumbo/K/La - what do ya'll do on math nights?????
Jane*K*MO - My parents are impressed when we do calendar and the incredible equations
Lori V. - Anne Do you have anny suggestions for a math night for parents?
Anne/K/Fl - On Math Night we set up stations where children and their parents interact with math games. We have other actitives going also. We give out packets, homework passes, passports, and a fun time is had by all. We usually do 2 grades at a time. The response is fantastic.
Addie k/mo - there arent a lot of papers w/mtw either...sometimes you use recording sheets for activities (kids like them, so they can take them home) and of course, practicing writing numerals
Hazel/3/FL - Di, did you get the 3 day training on SBG? I was quite impressed.
kat/Kathleen - Erin, check your e-mail :-)
Sheri - Jane, I don't do most of the workbook pages, but it is our adopted series. Sometimes i feel torn between doing what I think is best and doing what others expect.
Erin - I advertise my illustrations in The Directory of Illustration, put out by the Graphic Artists Guild, and I also belong to the Society of Illustrators.
Lori V. - Anne I really like that idea. I had all my kids make Mancalla games to practice with their parents last year
Jane*K*MO - Anne, I had a Back to school night with just our own class. but that sound wonderful
betsy - Jane, what are incredible equations?
Anne/K/Fl - I have a lot of suggestions for Math Nights if you e-mail me I will give you more feedback.
Lori V. - Sheri Have you seen the new 1998 AW MAth?
Becca - Erin, I'll be enjoying your illustrations this year with our new math book
Poppy/CA - Anne, any tricks for getting parents to attend???
Lori V. - Anne Thanks!
Addie k/mo - betsy, you arent on my pm's so here is my url and yes, i have a schedule... http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Aegean/2221/index.html
Lori V. - Erin Wwwhich math series have you illustrated?
Sheri - Lori, no, we adopted it about three years. Until then we had used MTW in K and 1st. We found that 1st needed something more, but not that much paperwork!
betsy - poppy, offer a prize to the kids who bring parent/signifacant adult..the kids will get them there! it's bribery but it works!!!!
Jane*K*MO - The students try to make as many equations as they can with the answer being the days date, if it was for today, they would make equations for 23. they do this mentally as well as on paper
Anne/K/Fl - Yes, the children want to go to win prizes and get a free homework pass so they must attend with a parent. Plus word gets around fast that this is a fun time for all!
Lori V. - Sheri It has way too many pictures for me, but we did keep the cure puppeets
aggie/1/ca - Poppy---- we have a big turnout at my school for ours! We have them on Fridays- believe it or not we get the best turnout on that night.
Poppy/CA - that sounds good, betsy!
Addie k/mo - when do you start your equations, jane? we did them in apr. and may
Lori V. - SSheri How long have you been teaching first grade?
Poppy/CA - aggie, I can see how Friday would be a good night.
Becca - We adopted this year. I hated AW. Not enough practice-a waste of paper in a math workbook to me
Poppy/CA - Do you have them once a school year? Each quarter?
Anne/K/Fl - Have any of you used Fact In My Pocket for equations with your class.
Addie k/mo - no one would show up to anything on a friday night here....FOOTBALL!!!!
Jane*K*MO - I don't know when I will start them in K, I started them about the 1st of Oct. in first.
Lori V. - Becca I agree with the AW math book, it is too much fluff.
sheri - lori, I got booted! I've been in 1st 5 yrs. K and 2 before that
aggie/1/ca - I do those equations w/the date in first grade as part of my calendar routine. We do the same thing w/coins.
Anne/K/Fl - We had our Math Night on Tuesday.
aggie/1/ca - We have ours just once a year, Poppy.
Addie k/mo - please explain, anne...i am not familar
Gumbo/K/La - we do the ate in equations and in coins........
Poppy/CA - No, Anne, but I would like to know about it.
Lori V. - aggie The coin calendar thing is great!
sheri - Addie, same here, king football!
Jane*K*MO - we hit the date several ways
Lori V. - Here if you do anything in the winter paretns will say it is too cold..
aggie/1/ca - All of my kiddos understood money this year because of it, Lori! They didn't believe me when I said some kids thought money was hard.
Poppy/CA - I like Hundred Chart activities.
aggie/1/ca - And I don't know much about those, Poppy.
Becca - Has anyone noticed that all the new textbooks are written as if that is the only subject you teach. Across the curriculum is great, but if you have seperate math center time, literacy center time and do all the stuff in the science, social studies, handwriting, ect books the kids need a 24 hour school day!
betsy - same with Friday nights here is Nebraksa! I do have really good parent particiaption..I reaslly thinbk parents feel inadequate so if we can give them ideas to do at home, they appreciate it. I send a newsletter home each friday and try to give at least
Gumbo/K/La - aggie-------same here--it really helps the kids learn about coins and counting them......
Anne/K/Fl - The children have a Fact in Their pocket that they choose from a basket when they come to school. During the day the teacher rings a bell or uses a cue to have the children share their fact with a friend. The children really love the interaction and it helps their memory skills.
Lori V. - Aggie I am like you I pull anything from anywhere that works..LOL I think we should make our own Math Series!
Addie k/mo - we did the coins begining in feb and tied them into presidents day
aggie/1/ca - Isn't that the truth, Becca!
sheri - Becca, yes! There's never enough time!
Lori V. - I just got ttrained in our new series math should take 50 minutes per day
Addie k/mo - i like that anne!
Anne/K/Fl - How many of you use the overhead for Math?
betsy - oops..I didn't finish..I try to give at least one Math and Reading idea each week to do at home
Lori V. - I just worry because sometimes you feel like you ahve to prioritze even the basics.
aggie/1/ca - I do all the time, Anne. Couldn't teach w/out one anymore!
Anne/K/Fl - There are so many math materials made for the overheads now.
sheri - Anne, I use the overhead lots
Lori V. - Anne Every day I use the oveerhead in reading and math
Di - OH projector. Yes!
Becca - Lori, I feel sorry for you . I rarely spent that long on math any day
Poppy/CA - Lori, I use whatever I think will work. Unfortunately, our newly adopted text doesn't fall into that category.
aggie/1/ca - wow, Betsy! How do you find the time to do a weekly newsletter??? I can manage it once a month but that's all!
Addie k/mo - i do for whole group math lessons. i use the overhead more for our alphabet papers though. i have a set of overhead manipulatives and these cute storage pockets that go around my overhead
Jane*K*MO - I too use the overhead, for math, reading and to teach writing story webs
Anne/K/Fl - What materials are you using for math with your overheads?
Poppy/CA - Anne, I love the overhead materials. The children love workig at the overhead too!
Lori V. - Becca Me neither so I am torn but I will not give up my reading but our system did add 1/2 hour too our day
aggie/1/ca - What do you use for math, Poppy? Do you have Everyday Math, too?
sheri - Does anyone find that kids get restless during MTW calendar? Any ideas?
betsy - Anne, is the fact in their pocket your idea or is it in a book somewhere?
Carrie - Hi: We use Everyday Math - It's all manipulatives and hard to understand it's organization. Any one els have the same problem?
Lori V. - Poppy What did you guys adopt?
canuk - The kids loved the overhead calculator that came with INteractions
Amy k/va - I do a lot of graphing on the overhead
Poppy/CA - We adopted Houghton-Mifflin.
Di - OH helped my kids understand regrouping better.
aggie/1/ca - Yes, sheri, especially at the beginning of the year. I don't do everything every day.
Addie k/mo - i ordered a complete set of overhead manips from lakeshore....patterning bears, tangrams, clocks, people pieces, inchworms, cant remember what else
Anne/K/Fl - Facts in my pocket is from Creative Publications or mathland.com
Jane*K*MO - I use the unifix cubes to show sets, I use the coin stamps on plastic to intor money, I use the clock stamp to show telling time'
Amy k/va - I have the thermometer and coins for the oh too.l
aggie/1/ca - Hi, carrie. I'm going to start my 3rd year w/Everyday Math.... I don't like it much!
Becca - Sheri, I had a hard time getting to Calendar around Dec. so I came up with a solution that worked for me . The calendar leaders did Calendar. I was free to monitor and do other important tasks
Lori V. - Poopy Our choices were HM, AW, Ginn or SSRA
betsy - I've made it a priority over the years. when I moved up to First grade a few year ago, I didn't do one and I really felt like I lost contact with my parents...Besides..Kgt parents are so involved..they are great to work with!
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, I have a 100 number chart that my kids love.
Poppy/CA - I use OH pattern blocks, fraction cirles, place value rods/flats..., Hundred Chart
Carrie - Aggie- What do you use that you like?
Becca - Poppy-Is that Math Advantage?
Lori V. - Poppy I meant Poppy not POOPY!!!
sheri - Becca, I pretty much do the same thing after Christmas. Two kids are responsible for doing the whole thing each day. We quickly review it together.
Poppy/CA - No, Becca.
Amy k/va - I involve the students a lot for calendar to help keep them interested.
Jane*K*MO - Betsy, i too, send a short newsletter, It let my parents know hwat we have done and what we will be doing the next week.
Lori V. - Addie lakeshore is great..by the way! I love the stampp kit for writing.
Jane*K*MO - I think you have too, amy
Anne/K/Fl - Do you use a Math Journal?
Lori V. - Our math series has a really cute weekly news paper that goes home.
Amy k/va - I send a weekly newsletter home too.
aggie/1/ca - I do B-I-B-I calendar, touch math and some of my own stuff, sheri, but next year will have to do more of EM since admin is gettin' testy over so many of us not using it!
Jane*K*MO - Anne, I would like to, how do you work your?
Addie k/mo - lakeshore is my favorite for ece stuff...i do a weekly newsletter too
Lori V. - Anne I love math journals. I havee started using Read It, Draw It, Solve it for that sometimes, great book!
betsy - are ther any good books/resources out there for all day/everyday kgt? I think I will love it when I get into it, but I am really nervous right now
Addie k/mo - is EM everyday math and if so, how does it compare to mtw?
Anne/K/Fl - Lori, who is the author of that book?
Jane*K*MO - aggie, if your kids are being successful, why does the admin care?
Becca - Our parents don't even read important notes. Newsletters are first to go in the trash. Then again a lot of our parents probably can't read. The notes are more or less a reminder to students to tell their parents what they need
betsy - Lori..what is Read It Draw it Solve It???
Lori V. - Anne I don't know off hand, but it is wonderful
Amy k/va - Tell us about Math Journals, never done them before, but sounds like a great idea!
Carrie - Aggie- I use a lot of the mnaipulatives that I have collected over 19 yrs of K. I work wth a new teacher who has brought many new calendar ideas to add to our already full calendar. We have been adapting this year.
aggie/1/ca - Jane---- cos they spent so much money on it and went out on such a limb to purchase it!
Lori V. - Betsy It ahs a word problem and a space where kids draw the problem, in pictures or #'s then they have to sstate it in words.
sheri - How often do you do math journals, anyone?
Addie k/mo - that is sad, becca. i have had pretty good luck with newsletters. this year i got a scanner, so i put class photos in some of the time and the kids loved this and consequently made their parents look at them
QueenofMN - Hello?
Poppy/CA - No one in here is using Mathland??
Addie k/mo - hi queeno
Lori V. - Sheir At least 3 times per week.
sheri - Lori, where do you get Read it Draw it Solve it?
QueenofMN - Just testing. Goodnight!!
Grace/IL - Hi Anne, Ow, I'm fine, trying to see what I can learn.
aggie/1/ca - Addie--- EM is Everyday Math. It's a lot like MTW but it has this weird, spiraling curriculum. Nothing is ever taught in depth. There's a lot of materials that you need for it, too, and guess who buys them??? I do!
Addie k/mo - amen, jane!!! admin needs to let the teachers do what works for them and their kids
Becca - Poppy-I'm sure I saw it and didn't like it. There weren't many that I did like
Sea/2 - good evening all
aggie/1/ca - Hiya, SEA!
Lori V. - A component of our math series I like is a seperate book of math stories where the kids problem solve in groups.
betsy - Poppy, what exactly is Mathland? I've never heard of it?
Amy k/va - Someone tell me more about math journals
Sea/2 - could someone talk more about read it/draw it?
Lori V. - Amy Mine vary beside the book I mention Imight just have the kids put math into words
Sea/2 - hi gumbo!
aggie/1/ca - A lot of districts here in Orange County bought Mathland, Poppy.
Becca - Aggie-is EM your math curriculum?
Lori V. - Sea I don't know who publishes it but I have the grade 1 and 2 series, they are great.
Addie k/mo - if the admin, wants you to use it, then they should foot the bill. mtw is kind of spiraling too, you never really leave a concept once it is introduced. if it were used k-2 it would be a spiralling curriculum. we only use it in k though
Anne/K/Fl - Having a math journal helps me to display to the parents and keep the children more organized with our math lessons. I incorporate the lesson with the date and cover our math standards by using cute actitivites with problem solving, number sense, counting, patterns, classification, tallying, and measurement. I model the activity and the children record their answer in their Math Journal.
betsy - since I'm new at this I'm findng everything going too fast to keep up..is ther anyway to print this off when we are done? will it all print off?
Poppy/CA - Becca.... same for me. I field tested Quest 2000 for my district. That left me cold. Mathland is total manipulative...neighboring district adopted it/ many parents were confused by it.
Sea/2 - we are piloting Saxon Math this fall...could anyone comment on it?
Carrie - Lori- would like to know more about the problems that your class is solving in groups.
Sea/2 - good question, betsy
Lori V. - I have just been buying sets of books lately for guided reading, these systems want you to do everything with nothing...
Sea/2 - i think you might be able to print in the archives...but it would take so much paper!
aggie/1/ca - betsy---- this meeting will be in the archives. You can print it all out.
Amy k/va - What do you use for the math journal...a spiral notebook?
Sea/2 - me too, lori
Addie k/mo - our second grades piloted it, and i dont think they were too crazy about it...but they are really into workbooks, etc. they didnt like the time spent on the calendar
betsy - SEA< our upper grades use Saxon..some like it, some don't but I can't tell you why....
Lori V. - Carrie Our series has a book of stories with the same characters grades K-6 there are problems to solve in every story
Becca - Sea-the city schools in my area loved it at first but it is failing to show results. Not enough practice on any particular skill. And it take about an hour a day
Anne/K/Fl - I use a Black and White composition book.
Lori V. - Amy I like to use loose leaf folders
Sea/2 - addie, is that saxon?
Addie k/mo - you can save paper by making your font really small before you print
aggie/1/ca - I think it's terrible how much teachers are EXPECTED to buy things for their classrooms!
Sea/2 - thanks betsy
canuk - In Western Canada the powers that be got together to write the Western Canada protocol which lists objectives and what they look like with sample questions. I mix and match series to address each objective, they all have different strengths
Addie k/mo - yes, sea
Sea/2 - understand becca (already familiar with their phonics)!
Anne/K/Fl - Have you teachers used convince me thecniques with solving math problems
Amy k/va - thanks Anne, I think I'll try it! I'll need to add another notebook to my supply list!!
Lori V. - aggie I agree, I had no good books for my higher level kids so I had to go buy them
Sea/2 - real time eaters!
Carrie - Lori- Who is the series by?
Di - Do any of your schools use the STAR math computerized test?
Grace/IL - With these posts flying by so fast, it would be very nice to repeat program names rather than using 'it'. Thanks much.
Lori V. - Carrie SRA, it is new this year, but was piloted for 10 years before being printed
Sea/2 - lori, could you give us an example?
Addie k/mo - no, but they are thinking about it? were you a pilot school?
Amy k/va - Loose leaf would be good too, in case there is a graph or some other kind of worksheet.
Sea/2 - we may be getting star, di...do you use it?
aggie/1/ca - Is that like the Star 9 test, Di?
Lori V. - Carrie What grade do you teach?
Sea/2 - thanks grace
Jane*K*MO - Di, my school was looking at the STAR test for reading, is that the same company?
betsy - here in Neb our legislature has set STandards for Math, reading, Social studies and are working on SCience. They don't say how or what to use..we are just to meet the standards using what methods our local districts decide on....not sure how I feel about
Lori V. - Sea An example of Read It draw it solve it?
Becca - Thanks everybody this was fun. Gotta go my husbands home!
Di - Yes, Jane. Put out by Accelerated Reader.
Addie k/mo - you could do monthly math journals and staple paper in a const. paper cover
Sea/2 - star comes with Accelerated Reading program...i believe their math star is same company
Jane*K*MO - How do you like it Di? Is it very hard to give?
Sea/2 - know THAT feeling, betsy!
Anne/K/Fl - I use a lot of number sense activities.
Carrie - Lori Thanks for the info. I teach Kindergarten
Addie k/mo - what is your opinion of STAR, di?
Di - Our upper grade teachers are trying it. I don't know if they have it for Gr. 2.
Sea/2 - yes, lori, please
Sea/2 - bye becca
Amy k/va - Good idea, Addie! Do you do math journals
Addie k/mo - it seems that our libriarian said STAR was for 3-5
Addie k/mo - no, but would like to
Di - From what I understand, not hard to give---just time consuming.
Sea/2 - addie, reading is for any grades...(star) don't know about the math one
Amy k/va - This has kind gotten me excited about trying something new....math journals!
Lori V. - Sea AN early one might be three cats on a blue mat, four on a green How many Cats? SO they could eitehr draw in the box the actual cats or an addition problem, depending on their developmental level. Then the words would be Seven Cats on the Mats. Does that make any sense at all???
Anne/K/Fl - Do you use math samplesfor your portfolios?
Sea/2 - anne, what type of activities...(number sense)
Jane*K*MO - I think our remedial reading teacher wants to use it.
Lori V. - Well i jsut get sick of everything they expect us to do for assesment
Sea/2 - yes, lori! thank you!
sheri - We are using STAR for reading in our system. The kid has to have a 100 word vocabulary in order to take the test, according to the trainers.
Sea/2 - are all your "word" problems done this way, Lori?
Addie k/mo - this past year, i wrote a grant entitled Magnify Mathematics through Music here is a link to an on line article about the program. http://www.joplinglobe.com/1997/dec97/dec13/121397f1.html i would be happy to further explain it if anyone is interested
Lori V. - Sea Glad it made sense, as I was typing it I was like whoa!!
Jane*K*MO - Lori, sometimes we spend more time testing (assessing) than we do teaching.
Sea/2 - AMEN. lori! (assessment!)
Anne/K/Fl - A lot of predicting, estimating, classifications, number patterns, stretching their thinking, and exploration.
Lori V. - Sea That is what I use for my math journal, it is easy because it is already done fo rme..
Jane*K*MO - The first three letters of assessment says it all!
Di - Yes, a few 1st grade readers were not able to score at all.
Amy k/va - LOL, Jane!!!
Sea/2 - thanks addie! i'm interested!
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, has some excellent examples of math at her site thank you for sharing with us Addie.
Lori V. - I mean between running records every two weeks, portfolios, informal assesments formal assesment...UGH!!!
Addie k/mo - LOL jane!
Sea/2 - good job, lori! (understand those flying finger tricks!) :)
Lori V. - Di What level were those kids reading at?
Sea/2 - so true, jane
Sea/2 - what guide do you follow, anne
betsy - I gotta go too. This was great..I'll try to come back again...do you always meet on Tuesday nights?
Gumbo/K/La - VERY true, jane!!!!!!!
Di - Lori, very low first grade.
Anne/K/Fl - Betsy, thank you for coming.
Lori V. - Di How do you track kids in reading?
Jane*K*MO - Betsy, yes, do come back, I enjoyed learning from you.
Lori V. - See here I go with the reading sorry...
Addie k/mo - the program has several components...first off we listen to classical music during our math station time and during our rest time. according to some research it is supposed to help develop synapses (connections) in the part of the brain that deals with logical mathematical thinking
Anne/K/Fl - Lor, how do you track kids in math?
Sea/2 - our new end-of-the-year assessment has to be done in small groups, using lots of manipulatives and takes days!
Di - Lori, I've only used the series assessments and achievement tests. Star looks interesting.
Lori V. - Anne We have portfolios in our schools grade K-6
Anne/K/Fl - We use the portfolio system, too. Does anyone use anything else?
Sea/2 - i've heard that theory before, addie, and if not else it's very relaxing!!! :) (We are an integrated arts school...so study these methods to a degree)
sheri - Lori, what goes in the portfolio?
Lori V. - Di Have you guys thought of running records? I absolutely think every teacher should use them to find out what strategies their kids are/are not using
Amy k/va - I play classical music during rest time, will have to try at center time too!
Lori V. - I have 6 minutes till the Real World is on...yes I am a loser...LOL
Sea/2 - di, i can't figure out how star will help develop concepts...seems like only drills or facts could be done by computer (no manipulatives)
Di - Running records?
Addie k/mo - then we also use music for math activities, such as the leader plays a rhythm instrument of choice while we are counting each day to keep everyone together and we use instruments for patterning (a pair of students can work together to create a pattern using two different instruments) and we also listen for repetitive patterns in music. we did the bunny hop and discussed how this was a pattern and recreated it with rabbit manipulatives
Anne/K/Fl - Hi Sea,
Di - Sea, the assessments come with suggested strategies, but no real help implementing.
Jane*K*MO - maybe we could look at ways of assessing students realistically sometime in the future?
Sea/2 - hey! that sounds really interesting, addie!
sheri - Di, I guess Lori left, but running records are part of Guided Reading.
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, I love the way you incorporate music with your math very innovative.
Amy k/va - Addie, I do a lot with music and instruments all throughout the day too. i find children learn so much through music!
Sea/2 - and di, no built in assisstant like the upper grades use during "testing" times...!
Addie k/mo - we used instruments for sorting and classifying by different sounds (ringing sounds, or instruments you tap, etc.)
Carrie - Addie- Interested in your music correlation with math. It interests me. Partners works good with patterning- they help each other.
Anne/K/Fl - What about dancing? I incorporate dancing and math.
Di - Thank, Sheri.
Sea/2 - sorry about my spelling on assistant!
Carrie - Anne- explain your correlation of dance and math.
Di - Right you are, Sea!
Jane*K*MO - wow, this is interesting
Addie k/mo - yes, the kids LOVE it!!! we have some CDs that the kids play along with, developing their listening skills and ability to follow directions
Sea/2 - sounds good ,too, anne
Di - Well, this was new for me. Quite informative. Thanks for sharing everyone!
Addie k/mo - we used lummi sticks and made up routines and followed some comercial ones on tape, incorporating more movement
Sea/2 - addie, your whole school uses these methods? (music) all grades?
Sea/2 - bye sheri
Anne/K/Fl - Cha Cha Cha, Macarena, creative dance and movement, the hop, the locomaotion, the stroll and others create patterns.
Jane*K*MO - I've got to go too, thank you for the new ideas
Sea/2 - thanks for coming, di
Gumbo/K/La - bye, ya'll......thanks for all the great ideas..........
Addie k/mo - no, i just did it with a state incentive grant...got to spend $5000 implementing this!
Sea/2 - addie, i'm going to check out your http address...i sure hope all of this is explained again there (?)
Sea/2 - anne, sounds like addie's program (/)
Sea/2 - bye gumbo
Addie k/mo - we used instruments for number concepts like ringing the blue bell 3 times ringing the orange bell 2 times = 5 rings all together
Sea/2 - cool addie!
canuk - Gotta go, thanks for the fresh ideas and new insights
Anne/K/Fl - Yes, Addie and I have many similarities.
Addie k/mo - it is a newspaper article and explains it pretty well, i think
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, thanks for your super ideas and creative input.
Addie k/mo - several neat things have happened....1. the principal bought the two kindergarten classes in a trailer rhythm instruments to share 2. one of the other kindergarten teachers ordered lummi sticks and tapes with her budget money to use next year. 3. the project exceeded the two objectives that were set a) 75% of students will score at the 4th stanine or above on ach. test (90% did it) and 75% of students will master 100% of district math objectives (95%) did it.
Anne/K/Fl - Addie, have you ever thought of doing workshops?
Addie k/mo - my favorite thing that i got was a keyboard. i can record songs with background music and use them to teach math concepts and of course to go with shared reading of poems.
Addie k/mo - funny, you asked that anne...i just was contacted by our local college to present about this next sept. at their ece conference.
kat/Kathleen - Hi, I'm back :-|
Anne/K/Fl - I wish more teachers would incorporate the arts into their curriculum.
Addie k/mo - anne, thanks for hosting our meeting tonight! i got some great ideas too...hi kat, where ya been?
kat/Kathleen - Anne, Addie is a wonderful teacher, it's obvious
Anne/K/Fl - Kat, we had a lively discussion tonight.
