Becca - hi susan
Susan (NC) - Guess I'm too early today ?
Susan (NC) - Hi Becca, guess we are the early birds!
Becca - no! just on time. I don;'t think to many people are haning around today
Becca - the email has been slow
Becca - where are you? Im in raleigh
Susan (NC) - I can't stay but a minute or two, I'm trying to write my community today......
Becca - Im putting finishing touching on lit
Susan (NC) - in western NC Bryson City
Susan (NC) - I'm a banker - so I
Becca - I have a few questions I hope someone shows up! Have you got your video?
Susan (NC) - 'm trying to get it right this time' opps- the first part got away from me!
Becca - Hi Kelly
Susan (NC) - I've done several video's...........needless to say the perfect one hasn't happened yet!!
Becca - Mine is definelty not 'perfecdt" but has some good reflection points
Kelly M - Hi kids! How are two of my favorite people?
Susan (NC) - y best one is perfect except I'm not in in it.........just my feet! Arrrgggghhhhh!
Becca - Relitively calm all things considering
Susan (NC) - Hi Kelly, how are you today?
Kelly M - Becca - what is your planned day to mail the baby?
Becca - 8 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!
Becca - A week form Mondy
Susan (NC) - Wow........that is great Becca!
Kelly M - Hi Jeff - welcome! Susan - don't forget that Becca's due date is Feb 15...she's one of our early folks!
Susan (NC) - I forgot about the new mailing dates............
Becca - I have a questrion I posted about test authors. I'm wondering if I can leave out (Fountas & Pinnell) example:The Spelling Phonogram test was administered to determine if CJ’s struggle in writing was related to his spelling ability.
Becca - OR The Spelling Phonogram test (Fountas & Pinnell) was administered to determine if CJ’s struggle in writing was related to his spelling ability.
Kelly M - Becca - did you mention Fountas and Pinnell in any other part? If so, mention their names the first time and put (F & P) in parenthesis right after it. From then on, only refer to them as F & P. Somehow I would get their names in somewhere with the test, though...because there are so many. I have to tell you that the flip side of the answer is that many people say to that you do NOT have to put those authors' names in. I just like to cover my bases!
Susan (NC) - Not sure about that one Becca? I did write about the programs that I was using according to our states guidelines, etc.
Becca - I have struggled with taking it out but two words SOMEWHERE HASVE TO GO! AGH!
Susan (NC) - good point Kelly - it should say some room that way -
Becca - Question two: Capitalize first grade or not?
Becca - IE This first grade classroom...
Kelly M - Becca - makes no difference. How are 1st grade ??? Saves space! the st will raise up tiny in word!
MJ - Hey everyone!
Kelly M - Hi Judy and MJ - glad to see you here today!
Kelly M - Becca - of course I meant that to say "how ABOUT 1st grade"...not "how ARE"!!!
Judy(FL) - Thanks. This is my first time. I'm working on Literacy weekend.
k1tchr - Susan, where in NC are you? I am in NC also
MJ - Becca, when are you going to mail your box? Are you from NC?
MJ - I'm from NC. and wondered how much mailing time to allow?
Kelly M - Judy - the new messages appear at the top of your page. It can get tricky when lots of posts are flying at the same time! But hang in there....most questions that are posted get answered sooner or later!
Judy(FL) - How specific should I be analyzing st. work? Other than t.observation, I haven't formally assess their writing with any type of assessment tool. Any suggestions?
Becca - Im NC but am not a NC candidate. I paid on my own (minus the W Mutual scholarship), didn't get the three days off and am due in 8 days!!!!! 15th of Feb
Becca - due to mail that is
k1tchr - sorry.... I would just die if I was due in 8 days!
k1tchr - I havent taken my 3 days off yet
MJ - I know you must be excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Becca - Ive been going so hard I think I'll make it but I could feel the stress this week at school I was up till 12 every night but thurs and my patience level was not normal!
k1tchr - Mine is not due until April, and I am stressed out already
Susan (NC) - MJ & k1tchr, I'm in western NC (Swain County)
Kelly M - Judy - your formal assessments do not have to pertain to writing. They can be about anything in literacy. Remember that you have to address all four areas of literacy - written, reading, oral, and oh please.............my brain just died! Somebody name the fourth! Anyway, you can put in any type of formal assessment yo uuse...
Judy(FL) - I'm ready to take a day off from school to work on this but that would mean arranging subplans et. al. (Speaking!)
Becca - QUESTION THREE: Anyone have another good word for engage? I find in the suppoprting lit section I am using it too MUCH!
Becca - speaking listeng and viewing
MJ - I bet! Mine is not due till April15, (tax day!)Susan, I'm from Rockingham County.
Judy(FL) - Oops. Oral is speaking...I think the fourth is visual
Becca - IT IS WORTH IT: I took two sick days and don't know where Id be without them!
Susan (NC) - Well guys, you are in good hands here with Kelly today so I'm going to get back to my writing-
k1tchr - Did anyone else have trouble understanding the questions on the SS entry? I feel like I am stating the same things over and over again... am I crazy??
MJ - Good luck, Susan!
Judy(FL) - I am doing my ss video over on Monday. It was too hard to hear the kids and I didn't want to make it any harder for the assessors. I hope the kids continue to be as engaged as they were last time.
jeff - Becca, instead of engage -immerse,engross
MJ - Is the literacy based on listening, speaking, reading, and writing?
Becca - Hi Jan hows the science coming along?
Kelly M - Hi Jan - good to see you!
JanKWV - Hi Becca! all written, except relfection...
k1tchr - I did my video over 3 times because of the sound, the kids were great
Kelly M - MJ - yes...those are the four (I think!)
JanKWV - Thanks.. my internet has ben off today... I got through my Panic attack!
Judy(FL) - Cool K! I hope it goes well. My science was going to be on rockets...Now in light of today I may reconsider, if not, there will probably be more impact. I live near the space center.
Judy(FL) - I teach 2nd grade
k1tchr - I have a kindergarten/first grade combination
MJ - For the literacy, how different do the children need to be -ability wise?
JanKWV - As I pack my box.. I think.. sure dosn't look like that much... but when then I realize.. each paper has probably been re-written 20 times.. I feel better....
Kelly M - MJ - they don't 'need' to be - it's just whatever you think will show the evidence of you dealing with them the best!
Judy(FL) - I'm still thinking about my big idea....probably going to be evidence, models, explanation. Maybe I should put literacy aside and get going on my science..
JanKWV - Does anyone have some alternate phrases for... It is evident to me that... I learend that.... for relfection?
Judy(FL) - How about I feel.....
JanKWV - Hi Terri...
Kelly M - I would stick with I learned.... they really don't care how it 'flows'...or if you reuse the same wording...they really don't. That's not the 'evidence' they're looking for! That's entirely something that WE put on ourselves!
JanKWV - Becca.. did you get your hard drive fixed?
Judy(FL) - I realize I am bouncing all over the place. How do each of you manage your time? Are you focusing on multiple sections or just one at a time? Also, did everyone recieve info for the assessment center? I still need to have my application glitches fixed!! I hope I'm not spinning my wheels and not be able to fully finish!
Kelly M - Hi Adrienne - how are you today?
JanKWV - okay.. gotta run.. good luck to everyone!
AdrienneHC - I am fine what are you guys talking about today
Kelly M - And to you, Jan!
Judy(FL) - Good luck to you too!
Terri - I am trying to pare my literacy down. Got it to a little more than 14 pages. What is everyone working on?
AdrienneHC - I am managing by working on one thing at a time. I am working on the LIteracy all along and then I am working on one entry along with that. I am finished with 4 and 2 but will review both during late FEB
Kelly M - Judy - I tried to stay focused on one entry at a time....and did not deal with the AC until after mailring the box. But I know that doesn't work for everyone...and as a matter of fact didn't completely work for me! I bounced back as I'd think of things...and find myself reworking an entry I thought was finished!
Terri - I got infor to sign up for the assessment center but nothing since I scheduled.
Judy(FL) - I started the day working on literacy. I got one half of one child written up. Tonight I plan to get some done on the other student.
Kelly M - Hi Row - welcome!
AdrienneHC - what date did you schedule for Terri
Row - Hi everyone
MJ - Adrienne, I feel like I am bouncing too. Mine is due in April but I only have entry 4 finished. I partially started the literacy one, and have ideas for the ss one.
Terri - June 23, as late as possible!
AdrienneHC - I know this is crazy but my husband just went back to working Saturday nights and I am happy about it
AdrienneHC - Terru so they have it open up until June now for testing windows...where are you
Judy(FL) - smile I hear you about husbands working on Saturdays. It makes working on NBs more easier.
Terri - I am in SC, Columbia to be exact.
AdrienneHC - when I called they were only open untill April so I told her I would call back
Terri - I love it when my family is occupied.
MJ - Me too!
Terri - Others at my school are testing early in June.
AdrienneHC - I am working on litercay and wanted to know if you all are typing up each questions for one child and then typing up another or putting both kids together for the queestions?
Judy(FL) - We get out of school the third week in May. I hope to assess the second week in June. I'll need some down time.
Becca - I am seperating bothe secdtions for both kids
Terri - I thought that you had to do each child separately.
Judy(FL) - I am also separating each kid. I created separate files for them in my NB folder.
AdrienneHC - so Becca you are going to answer every questions for kid #1 and then go back and answer all questions for kid#2?
AdrienneHC - Terri I wasn't sure and wanted to know if anybody had read anything that specified NB wanted it typed
MJ - I'm doing each child separately too.
Becca - 3 pages, 3 pages for each on the analysis and then about 21/2 for each on the supporting lit
Terri - Directions say "in separate sections labeled with each student's name"
AdrienneHC - sounds good
Kelly M - Your questions are probably not the same for the two kids. There would be some overlays ... but there would be some differences, too...and you want to be sure to explain your different approaches to the needs of different children.
AdrienneHC - ok terri that is what I was wondering
AdrienneHC - have you all seen the literacy help in the files by Cathy I think it really helped me out
Terri - I teach K and did have alot of same questions at beginning of year. Felt like I was repeating myself.
Kelly M - Terri - thanks for straightening us out!
MJ - How many formal assessments are you using for the literacy?
Judy(FL) - I guess I better get back to work. Good luck everyone. I've already seen the benefits of this NB process. I wish more would participate. I pray I pass the first time but I am looking at it as a two year process so as to not get too overwhelmed. I'm doing the best I can with my limited time. Have a good weekend.
AdrienneHC - I have one formal assessment which is a standardized test that all children in the county take and then I have several informal i.e. running records, writing sprees, dictation, developmental spelling tests, phonemic awareness test, word list test, concepts of print test.
Kelly M - Have a productive week, Judy!
Terri - Two..........Johns Inventories, required by district, and Conventions of Writing Developmental Scale
AdrienneHC - what about you?
Terri - lots of informal.....running records anecdotal, periodic writing assessments
MJ - I am going to use the Gentry spelling inventory, my state literacy assessment, and a CALP ( i think that's it) test from the speech teacher.
AdrienneHC - Oh one thing I wanted to share
Terri - forgot, I used Pre-School Language Scale from speech teacher for one.
AdrienneHC - If you ever get bogged down and need to do something different don't forget about all the little forms that have to go into the portfolio like cover sheets,r oom layout, contextual info sheet those are busy work things you can do if you feel like yoru going to scream if you rewrite one more sentence.
MJ - Good ides!
Terri - Good advice. Cover sheets for literacy are in the files.
MJ - Oops, idea!
Kelly M - That's GREAT advice, Adrienne - you can still be productive and working toward the finish line!
AdrienneHC - yeah they are so you can just dowload them type on them print and atleast sill be working
Terri - In my literacy, I refered to the kids by their first initial instead of writing out the whole name each time. Think this is okay?
AdrienneHC - yeah that is a good idea someone else on the ec gen ring had said that too it will save you valuable space
MJ - Where in the files are all those sheets?
AdrienneHC - under the next generation portfolio
Terri - now if I could just figure out a way to get rid of my extra 1 1/4 pages!
AdrienneHC - the second next generation portfolio help there are two entries
AdrienneHC - yeah I hear you Terri.
AdrienneHC - someone removed all the two spaces after periods and that made more space
MJ - I think I used 1 of them for my communication log.
Terri - already did that and hyphenated, too
Kelly M - Okay...I need to get going. Sounds like you guys are all moving along! See you next week!
Terri - bye Kelly
AdrienneHC - oh did you check your margins to be 1 inch and check your font garamound is ok to I think and it is smaller
AdrienneHC - see you later kelly
MJ - Thanks for all your support Kelly!
AdrienneHC - I am going too my son is taking a nap and I can get some work done. See you all next Saturday
AdrienneHC - see you guys
Terri - I really should go watch my science videos. I have been putting it off!
MJ - Terri, when is your box due?
Terri - April 15
Terri - How about you?
MJ - Mine too.
MJ - What have you done so far?
MJ - Hey Ron
Terri - Accomplishments which need revising and adding to, Social Studies which is being read by a friend, and am working on literacy.
Terri - Have taped for science but nothing I am thrilled about
MJ - sounds good. You're ahead of me.
MJ - I've only done entry 4, and part of entry1. I will tape ss this week.
Terri - Takes me forever to write anything up. I stare at the prompts wondering what they heck they want exactly!
MJ - I do too. They make everything so vague.
Terri - what is your lesson for ss?
bp - You guys make me feel like I might actually be able to complete this, I have been procrastinating.
Terri - you can do it!
MJ - I think it is doable, but it does take alot of time and effort!
MJ - so what have you done, bp?
bp - thanks. they are really vague, I guess I am going to write something, take a stab at it.
Terri - I don't work well under pressure so I am trying to keep ahead and on a schedue. Everyone works in different ways.
MJ - When are you going to mail yours, Terri?
Terri - bp, that works for me. I have to make myself start writing and once I get going it is easier.
Terri - Want it in the mail by April 1.........April Fool's day! but I think I will have trouble letting it go. I keep changing things.
MJ - Where do you live?
Terri - SC
bp - I think I have to mail by the very beginning of April as well because spring break is there and we are going away.
Terri - my sping break is only a few days and it is after April 15.
MJ - Oh, that's right. Our system's support leader for NB said to allow mail it 2 weeks ahead, but I think 1 week would be enough time.
bp - why is your spring break only a few days?
Terri - had a friend who finished the day it was due and had to buy a seat on a plane for hers to get there in time
MJ - you're kidding!
Terri - they split our spring break between March and April for some unknown reason. We have lost the March days as they are now snow makeup days.
MJ - I wouldn'y want to do that, but I understand why she did it.
MJ - Are you getting several people to read each entry?
bp - where do you live terri? I hope they don't do that to us.
Terri - I have had three people read 4, am waiting to get it back from last one. Only one to read my social studies so far. I want to find another K teacher to read my literacy.
Terri - I am in SC
Terri - My science is going to be so bad, I am not sure I want anyone to read it!!
MJ - Why do youn say that?
Terri - can't seem to get the right mix of science, math, and inquiry, especially the inquiry
MJ - I know what you mean. I ordered a book from Amazon on inquiry science activities. Hope it helps. Well, I've got to go. Talk to you next week. Good luck everyone. Hope the writing goes well.
Terri - I am off to watch scienc videos. Good luck guys
bp - good luck see you later
