marci - help, I'm panicing. on my literacy entry I've crossed over between analysis and supporting literacy development. Will assessors pull out what they need or do I have to go back and rewrite the whole thing?
Susan(NC) - Donna, what grade for magnets? Is your video small group or whole class?
clm - Now, what about Big Idea in Science. I am using a plant study. We will talk about plants and how they grow. What is the big idea?
sue - clm- what does the child do or not do for example-- one of my child did not consistently speak in complete sentences
diane - i am writing up magnets NOW too...did with kinder
Donna - I am K- doing small groups that rotate through 5 different avtivites- gives me 5 videos to choose from without repeating
aggieb NC - CLM.. the only way I could fairly answer that would be to read your entry... What are you trying to teach them. what is the main idea?
sue - marci- I think the rules say seperate categories but it should be easy to seperate
marci - also I used space in instructional context to talk about the 2 specific children since they are the "special needs" children of this entry. do I still need to talk about children with with special needs if I never mention them again in the entry?
Susan(NC) - Big idea in science with plants might fall under 2 categories ?
Donna - I used systems order and organization as big idea-not sure though
clm - Can you tell me which 2 categories?
marci - I wrote my questions, my assessments and the then the stategies to move them forward. that makes sense to me.
diane - it took all i could muster to use systems, order and organ. for magnets...big ideas throw me for a loop
sue - marci- I would you need to describe the characteristics of the 2 children featured in the entry. the assessors won't know these 2 are your special needs kids unless you state it
Donna - me too diane-I feel very unsure of my BI
ChrisNC :) - I am confused about the options for literacy. my samples for one child are from both A and B but I know I have to choose only one...How?
aggieb NC - meausrement , constancy and change would probalu be the other big idea for science
Susan(NC) - I think systems/ order & organization and Structure & Function; but I'm not a science guru.........but 3rd times the charm, right? LOL

marci - they aren't specifically "special needs" but it seems they are the two assessors need info about to "see" who they are. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense

aggieb NC - Genie,, I would hate to answer without reading the first part of a person's entry to see what they were really trying to teach their students. you have to weave the BI throughout the entry for a solid score.. just stating it is not good enought..
marci - any other comments about my literacy problem? or not a problem? Help would be appreciated. I'm confused about what assessors are trained to pull out in the entries.

sue - I agree with aggie. remember the same idea can have 2 differenr big ideas depending on how it's taught
Donna - I wonder about using the BI of constancy since we are repeating experiments to see oif the results are always the same?
diane - can we just write up the 4 pgs. on planning and instruction without starting new paragraphs...only way i can fit it in

Genie/GA - I have another book that was INVALUABLE for entry 1..."Scaffolding Emergent Literacy". by Soderman, Gregory and O'Neill. Excellent for our age children....pre-k thru 3rd grade
aggieb NC - There was a lot of chatter on the ring about 24 point.. what's this all about? Is it within guidelines.. I wouldn;'t trust it.
Susan(NC) - so if you write the BI in all of the activities , not specifically naming it but the assessors should be able to tell , right?
Genie/GA - I used bullets in 3 to describe our sequence of lessons for the unit

sue - marci- just a few questions to think about-- did you describe each child selected? did you integrate informal and formal assessments? did your analysis of work samples answer your questions about each child?
Donna - Last I heard aggie-it was a no-no
ChrisNC :) - one student has a sample with letter like formations describing her picture (she dictated a sentence) and her others are drawings with sentences using inventive spelling should I use option A even though the last 2 samples may be B?
Susan(NC) - 24 point?? how could you answer all the questions? NO room for anything-
marci - sue, yes I did all that in the analysis but I also added what I did next to move them forward with their literacy. I was told I shouldn't do that but it seems logical to me.
Donna - I used A for all of mine Chris, even when they started to write sentences
sue - chris- I don't have my entry 1 rules here but I think that would still be option A. reread it. Option B was more for the independent writers
aggieb NC - Susan I stated the big idea in the beginning but throughout the entry it was cleared shown.. and perphs stated here or there.. I knew I make it a clear case and point

ChrisNC :) - Thanks the words "marks do not reflect conventional ways of forming letters" are throwing me...she does use conventional ways of forming letters in all samples.
sue - marci- if you changed instruction as the result of the analysis of the work sample it should be ok. But, you should be very specific in the seperate section about supporting literacy
Genie/GA - the first student was in the pre-phonemic stage of writing...and still is!
diane - i stuck in the reference to systems where it would fit to make sure they saw the connection or saw that i saw the connection

diane - when you have too many pgs. you start deleting all the extra words...amazing how you can eliminate words and still keep the content
aggieb NC - First we all tell our stories and then we learn to tell them in a clear concise way by cutting the flull to the allotted pages
Genie/GA - I really had to cut #1 and #3

sue - marci- OK, but the analysis of one sample should have lead to other questions. you really should have been able to differentiate instruction based on the needs seen in the analysis of the work samples
Jonesy - I am interested in trying the NB next year. I just want to know if it is an impossible dream and will it cause problems in my very new marriage?

clm - in my unit on plants I believe the Big Idea would be Life Science but I am not sure if it would be Characteristics of organism or life cycles of organisma or organisms and environments. I am going to do all three with all my activities.
diane - instead of me writing that my science objective for the unit is that my students will...i write my science objective is...they know they are for my students and i have eliminated a few words...few here a few there save space

sue - marci- the cycle should be ask/ answer/adjust/support/analyze again
marci - it showed me what to concentrate on next. I was able to see if what I was doing with him was helping. and then I planned activities to provide a support for what he was currently weak in.

bruppert - I m doing properties of water and my BI is constancy , measurement and change-- we have been doing all kinds of experiements with and mixing things and seeing shapes snow and ice make---so... my question is how do I go about deciding which instructional materials we use. I have journal entries.

shelby - statue of liberty is just a crown and the torch using posterboard, toilet paper rolls, paint - the bell -we are trying papermache over a balloon- musical instruments are paper towel rolls decorated with stars, red,white, blue and streamers - we will then have a parade and present it at PTA
sue - marci= don't forget to mention what you did with the parents to help the students succeed
mariami - if we retake an entry are there any grants that are avaliable to help us out

diane - for magnets i made a sheet where the kids circle all the items on the sheet that will be attracted to a magnet and will use this as an assessment...also using a bar graph showing how many paper clips a magnet will pick up

diane - i am not the expert but a graph ties to math and is a great tool if it fits in with your lesson

diane - i did an aims cut/paste on what they think will stick also
Genie/GA - The worksheet was teacher made..and then I ended up having kids do their own w/ the thermometer stamps...that was a hoot!
sue - bruppert- I used a science report form from the science center with their dictation
shelby - social skill is cooperation (also our character trait for this month) and would citizenship be social skill or social studies?
Donna - we will also test various materials and see if the magnet can attract through it- do a graph of our results

diane - my son called me last night and said they were out going to places where they did piercings...i said you better get nothin pierced and if he did it would have to be in his pants because i saw nothing elde
bruppert - yeah for sure, DAnny's latest is he is going to CA and get his education --he needs to get away from us.
bruppert - my sons did the piercing thing and tatoos too.
bruppert - Jake is so conservative and he asks me where we got the boys, he says they must be my kids cuz he is not like that at all.
diane - maybe my son can go with him...a high school dropout, no drivers lincense and just 16 yrs. old...no tatoos and no piercing until he is old enough
Kelly M - I know that I am very blessed with my two kids...
bruppert - well Danny won't have the license after 25 Mar. either but has the piercing and tatoos.
diane - take it from bruppert and me...YOU ARE!!
bruppert - my oldest son went through this same stage and he is fine now and can't get over Danny. In fact he says the funniest things becasue he has forgotten how he left and had to go to CA too. to find himself.
diane - i still wouldn't trade him for anything because he is a gentle soul and the most wonderful person in the world despite being 16 and confused
Kelly M - bruppert - where would he go in CA - do you have relatives there or something?
bruppert - yeah well I could think on trading for a bit.
diane - my older one is fine!!!
bruppert - no nothing is there,... he is just not happy and all.
bruppert - it is so stupid and Jake told him he was not affording him to go to College out there at all.
diane - they think getting out will solve their problems...my 21 yr. old said a million times when he was young, i can't wait til i can move out of here...well he's 21...move out ALREADY
Kelly M - bruppert - where did your older son stay when he went out there?
bruppert - I can't talk to him as I want to scream and yell at h im and I know that turns him off. So I am stewing inside and abut to loose my mind
bruppert - Timmy had graduated from William and Mary and had a job out there in Monterey CA.
bruppert - totally a different scenerio
diane - been there my dear as you know...i'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts because we do survive although i don't know how
bruppert - Danny has only 2 years of college and one of his friends is not happy at Frostburg state in MD and he is thinking he will go with him. just being a follower. He has the opportunity to play football at FSu and all.
