Kelly M - Hi bella - how are you?
bellacru - I'm trying to figure out how to use this chat room
bellacru - I'm trying to figure out how to use this chat room
Kelly M - The new messages appear at the top of your screen.
bellacru - I have a small space to type in. Is that all you have, also?
Kelly M - Yes...just the line at the bottom...
bellacru - OK. I think I understand now. I just used to msn haveing a large area to type in.
bellacru - I am ... having... I do know how to spell.
Kelly M - Don't worry....nobody cares as long as we can understand what you mean!
DebbieMc. - Hey friends!
Susan (NC) - Hey! I'm surprised we have folks here already!
bellacru - I have a question. On the ss/comm./arts video, do we have to show all three of these areas?
Susan (NC) - Debbie & Kelly - I've missed you!
sue - hi yall!
DebbieMc. - I've missed you all too! I should be cleaning today but I'm chatting instead.
Kelly M - Hi Susan and Debbie and Sue!
Kelly M - Hi Lois!
Lois - hello folks - Hi Kelly - finally got on this thing!
sue - bella- reread the directions for this year. I'm a CIW but all aspects had to be present
DebbieMc. - bellacru, this is an entry that you should weave the three together.
Susan (NC) - Me too..........I'm finishing up writing a grant; deadline is Monday!
sue - hey debbie, I missed yall,too
sue - susan- what for?
sue - this is the first sat I haven't been working, too!
Lois - Hi folks and Kelly - finally got on hthis think
DebbieMc. - You're video should show that you have built a community in your classroom and that you teach the important concepts in ss and arts in an integrated manner.
DebbieMc. - Susan, what's your grant for?
Lois - I'm helping someone today -so I'll let her continue with this
sue - the ss entry is the one I am most concerned about.
Susan (NC) - It is called "Bright Ideas' from the electric companies...........possibly for $2,000- I'm trying to purchase LeapPads!
sue - my kids were off the day I videoed because a copy of my parents got into a fight with parents in the other class!
DebbieMc. - Good luck, Susan. I love grans.
DebbieMc. - and grants!
sue - susan- did you pull all the research from the site about how it's linked to state standards?
Lois - Becca is that you girl???
Kelly M - Hi Sue and Becca
Susan (NC) - Getting one last year for $600 gave me confidence to try for another-
Becca - Hi Lois
Becca - Taking a break from transcribing my science!
sue - I'm finishing up the early reading first grant today! 2.5 million!!!
Lois - how is the video - looking beter and better
bellacru - I am having tech trouble today.
DebbieMc. - Wow, sue. Is that statewide?
Lois - I feel like it is a good one from what you told me
sue - debbie- nope that's one grant over a 3 yr period.
DebbieMc. - bellacru, we all have tech problems sometimes.
Becca - It feels good the more I watch it. Jamey copied it several times now i just have to choose the 15 minute section!
DebbieMc. - I thought my school getting a 300K last year was a big one.
DebbieMc. - Is that grant through the federal gov.?
sue - becca-- LOL! I had mine almost memorized and still have about 6 copies!
Lois - remember how I told you to lok for the standards to find the best portiontion
sue - debbie- it's federal. you had to be invited to do a complete application based on your pre-app. We were one of 150 nation wide
sue - so who is a newbie?
Lois - my sister who is standing here is a newbie!!
Susan (NC) - I'm just waiting.........seems to be my middle name!
bellacru - I am a newbie. I have been trying to figure out the direction to take in ss. I'm doing community workers.
Becca - I'm a newbie!
Lois - susan (NC) are you a CIW??
bellacru - I just can't decide how to fit everything in a 15 minute time period.
sue - bella- I'm a CIW but I did a lesson that intergrated the arts and social studies and showed coommunity by how we interacted
Becca - don't try to fit everytihing in, chose your best part
Susan (NC) - I'm a banker CIW - - - is that a category?
sue - bella- tape the entire lesson ( my entire lesson was 45 minutes). Then decide what section you want to use
bellacru - That's what I need to know. Is it ok to video a lesson without showing everything in the actual video. Can I include details about the arts in the write up?
sue - I sat and looked at each section and transcribed what the kids said line by line.
Kelly M - Susan - some people call bankers 'veteran' candidates...or 'experienced' candidates. I always called myself a banker!
Lois - need to go - my sister (newbie) want to write - Becca call me if you need anything
sue - bella-reread, we had to say what happened before and what happened after.
bellacru - We are making a town in the classroom. Can I take a picture of this and include it as an instructional piece?
Lois - bye folks - and hang in there
Becca - bye lois!
sue - in my case before I started taping, we had written an original blues song with a songwriter working as a group. After the lesson, we used the sketches as a basis for a large mural
sue - bella- how does making a town address the national arts standards?
liz - Can you do the art lesson in the video?
bellacru - I know we are to explain what happened before and after, but what if the best 15 minutes doesn't include the arts?
sue - brb
DebbieMc. - bella, did you use art elements in the construction of your town? You don't have to answer, I'm just throwing our questions.
liz - sue, didyou do the art lesson in the video? or before
DebbieMc. - How does building the town/using the finished product help your students understand your social studies concepts?
bellacru - I am using the construction of the town to offer thought provoking questions in the process of planing and designing a town.
sue - Ok, go to www.wizzlewolf.com for art standards
sue - liz- the arts were totally integrated into the social studies concept.
sue - the kids sang, danced and painted on the video. the community was how they took care of each other during the process and discussed the topic
liz - For the video, I guess I amconfused....so youdid dothe art in the video?
sue - let's go at this backwards- what is your social studies concept?
bellacru - I am also using music where the students will sing a multicultural song about the building of a city. From this will be a spin off on how towns are built by many different people.
sue - it's not art, it's the Arts that's what's confusing you
bellacru - You are so right, Sue. I just need to do a lot of reading a research in this area. At least, you are making me aware of the problem I have to deal with.
sue - bella- what is the concept?
liz - mine is commonality and siverstiy...I haad the kids bring in photos from home and make..I was wondering if they should do the collage
sue - liz- what age?
liz - **diversity
liz - third grade
bellacru - I am teaching the students about the importance of all people in communities.
sue - bella-what age?
bellacru - first
Kelly M - Any kids! Some years they just don't gel the same way that another year does!
liz - I feel like I should havethe students do the collage for the video to show more interaction and have more discussion any opinions??
sue - liz and bella, you have the concept. now you have to figure out how to integrate the arts into the lesson.
Kelly M - That last post of mine was not meant for the ring...sorry that it didn't make any sense to anyone!
sue - how can the arts enhance the teaching of the concept? can the arts be used as a vehicle for the kids to understand it?
liz - Doing the collage is integrating the arts...I wasn't sure if I should have them do it for the video?
Kelly M - Hi Pat - how are you today...and liz...hi...I missed you coming into the room!
liz - hi
pat - Hi, All. I'm a CIW - just listening in
DebbieMc. - I would just think about how you can present the social studies concept through arts that will help them better understand the concept.
bellacru - I have had the students construct a map of their community, construct a town, sing a multicultural song, illustrate their own booklet about the places we visisted on our field trip, etc. I thought these things were part of the arts.
liz - So Pat, you survived last year...I find this to be a very exhausting task and so unclear
sue - liz- jmo, I don't see the collage as integrating the arts. It's an activity
liz - an art activity?
sue - what art standards and concepts were addressed by these activities?
Becca - sue what about using an photo and crayons to create the collage as an art technique?
sue - brb
pat - Yep, I survived last year - with lots of support and encouragement from my family and kind people on the ring.
DebbieMc. - Unless you can use the concept of the class working as a community to accomplish something. Or working for the common good. The development of the collage could be arts.
Kelly M - Hi Patsi - how are you?
Susan (NC) - I'd better get back to my grant writing - good luck to you newbies and hang in there to you CIW's -
bellacru - That I'll have to find out, but I thought these would address the arts in some way. What does brb mean?
liz - be right back I think
Patsi - Hi Kelly - I am fine - rushing today so I can stay for a few minutes.
liz - any ideas for teaching commonality integrating the arts?
Patsi - With the 2002-2003 cycle have the due dates and the order of completion changed?
liz - commonality and diversity? I thought the photos from home indicating family structure and customs was a good idea.
Kelly M - I think they have to renew every year, though.....I'm not positive
Patsi - Have some candidates already completed the AC but not the portfolio?
Kelly M - Hi Terri - how are you?
Terri - okay!
sue - I was checking my arts standards.
Patsi - Commonality among the students in the classroom?
DebbieMc. - It's not that it's a bad idea, liz. That's connecting to something relevant to the students. Just think about how you can build on their family structure and customs to help them understand commonality and diversity. You're doing a very important step in students acquisition of new knowledge.
sue - working productively as part of a group is an arts standards.
liz - commonality and diversity among students in my classroom yes
sue - liz- collage would work but I think it would be just one part. read more about the national art standards
Patsi - liz do you each K?
liz - so shall I make the collage for my video? What do y'all think...perhaps a better idea??
DebbieMc. - group membership is a social studies concept too.
liz - no third grade
sue - liz- try it. if you don't like it you can always retape
Patsi - your video won't show the actual activity making - you want to show the students engaged in discussion with each other relating to your topic and arts goals - at least that is what I did (I am a CIW)
sue - but don't you have to show the entire group for the video?
liz - new ?? Are you newbies answering the Instruction and planning ?'s in the order they are asked or including them somehow in your writing?
Becca - Patsi I have completed the AC and not the portfolio
Patsi - becca when is your portfolio due?
liz - For the ss video, it can be total group or a small grp.
sue - patsi- mine was a little different. four year olds don't quite discuss with each other yet. I lead the discussion and they joined in.
sue - then I had them talking with each other as they worked
Becca - February 15
bellacru - I am currently trying to nail down the concept and direction of my entry.
Patsi - I teach K and led the discussion also.
Kelly M - I have to go...I'll 'see' you guys on the ring..........
DebbieMc. - Bye, Kelly.
Becca - Ive go 4 mostly done and now working seriously on science!
sue - patsi- that's the entry that I'm worried about. the kids were really upset becuase they watched parents fighting right before we taped.
Patsi - my kids responded to each other within our discussion but I facilitated
DebbieMc. - sue, physically fighting or verbally?
sue - the other aspects were strong though. the kids were just stressed and cranky
Patsi - Becca - let 4 rest for a while - it will be easier to look at it objectively if you take a breather from it.
liz - I need some good ideas on how to integrate the arts when teaching commonality and diversity
Becca - I've got to go. Thansk for the thoughts on SS/Arts.
Patsi - Sue, try not to stress about it... Easier said than done I know.
sue - debbie- both, it was not a nice scene. I had to escort them off campus with the help of the asst principal and another teacher
DebbieMc. - liz, I'll bet if you read the ss standards and the art standards, something will jump out at you.
Becca - $ has been on the table untouched for 3 weeks now! I figure science, ss and then literacy with some back and forth in between!
Becca - 4 not $
sue - patsi- there's nothing to do about it. I'm a CIW.
Patsi - Hi Debbie Mc - how is your year going?
sue - at least I was able to address the violence in my reflection. It's not uncommom where I teach for things like that to happen
DebbieMc. - I am assigned to a school 45 miles from home, so I'm just great!
sue - debbie is right. look at your lesson and look at your standards
Patsi - I am a CIW also Sue - I usually have one nervous twinge in my stomach a week! But they are getting closer together now...
Patsi - Good for you Debbie - than do you commute daily?
sue - patsi- can't find any info on the NB page for 2001-2002 candidates
DebbieMc. - liz, if you think for a couple of days about what you really want to show with this integration, you'll feel much better about the end product. The time will be well invested.
DebbieMc. - I do commute daily.
Patsi - sue, what exactly are you looking for? The release date?
liz - gtg thanks for your ideas
sue - darn! some weird looking bug bit my arm when we had all the rain with Isadore, my arm is still itching!
sue - patsi- release date and the list of candidates who certified by state in the past years
sue - debbie- how long does it take you?
DebbieMc. - to commute? about 50 minutes with traffic, etc.
Patsi - I haven't been to the NB site for a while - Can't help you out. I figure that the release date discussion will come up on the ring
sue - debbie- that's great. I'm 15 miles from school and it takes me 35 minutes in traffic!
DebbieMc. - ladies, I have more stuff to do. Take care and have a good week.
Patsi - Good luck writing this week to the newbies.... Talk to everyone later!
sue - bye patsi
