Kelly - Hi! How are you?
Debbie Mc. - I'm getting ready for the state dept. to visit.
Dana in MS - Good luck Debbie!
Debbie Mc. - Thanks Dana! I'll need it.
Susan (NC) - yes! good luck Debbie, talk about making you nervous!
K - i think that I need to spend New Year's working on my portfolio. I have been procrastinating!
K - I am feeling discouraged about our state network. I think that I hurt someones feeling by questioning something that they did. I didn't mean to I was just trying to help.
Lana - Does anyone know whether current candidates can use notes at the AC? How about bankers?
K - Any suggestions on how to approach people?
Dana in MS - Lana for now I think the jury is out on whether notes can be taken in the AC.
Debbie Mc. - You mean to give advice for mentoring K?
Lynn/3/Charleston - is there anyone here who feels comfortable helping a third grade teacher with a science question?
Susan (NC) - Hi Leigh, I agree with your frustration you are having with your writing - me too!
Lana - Dana, my candidates are nervous about this. I keep telling them not to worry about AC now, but I'm worrying for them!
K - yes - advice to other candidates - or questions about what they are doing... they did solicit the advice.
Debbie Mc. - Really, the studying will prepare them if they go at it hard.
Lana - Does anyone know what portfolios are going to be assessed where? I know where the assessing will be but not what will be assessed where.
Dana in MS - 3rd Grade Jane it takes awhile to get the hang of this kind of chatting - the first few times I got a severe tension headache trying to keep up!
Leigh - Susan what are you working on ?
K - Leigh, thank you for motivating me to start entry 1!
Kinderjane - K -all you can do is make suggestions. They can take it or not!
Debbie Mc. - K, I always start out with something positive and find some good things then give suggestions like, I think you could make your entry stronger by....
Dana in MS - Lana I don't blame them! I would be scared too! I wouldn't have done as well at the AC without any notes -
Susan (NC) - I called NB this week; they said "No Notes Allowed" for this summer but they told me to write and give my opinion; do you think it would help?
Debbie Mc. - couldn't hurt Susan.
Bubba~NC - Susan.......NO NOTES for the AC tests.really?
Lana - Gosh, Susan, I don't know if it would help. Maybe we all ought to write and encourage notes for this summer...
Dana in MS - K some people are ultra sensitive no matter how gentle you try to be with them, too.
K - I didn't even see the entry... it was a questions about the goals... without context
Kinderjane - Debbie- that's what I need to do more of. I don't tell enough good. Just jump in with suggestions and then feel bad after I return it.
3rd Grade Jane - I am sure that I be parallel talking -what i do best!
Debbie Mc. - I'd love to assess this summer but I'm afraid I won't have time.
Mary Lou - Hi Guys! Boy, we're crowded tonight! Have to take a break from writing because everything is beginning to sound awful!
Lana - Is it true that 2001 boxes won't be out for anyone until Dec. 2001?
Leigh - Debbie does a great job with advice.
Susan (NC) - Leigh, I have a rough draft done for #1 and have done several activities for my science. Want to do another video after break.
TracyOK - I heard NB will make a final ruling on the "no notes" deal in February.
3rd Grade Jane - dang-I just wish I knew what to do to turn in my portfolio before next winter!
Debbie Mc. - Well, Jane, I'm sure that you're more diplomatic than you think. Your posts are always supportive.
Debbie Mc. - Thank you Leigh. You're too kind.
TracyOK - I plan to assess in Tulsa this summer...if possible!
Lana - TracyOK, are you Tracy H?
TracyOK - Yes...Tracy H!
Leigh - Susan - Email me sometime we can keep in contact
Kinderjane - Jane 3- I kept comparing myself to the Hare in the Tortoise and the Hare. I just worked slow and steady....like I do everything!
Lynn/3/Charleston - topic, seeds.... from examining dry ones, soaking them, weighing them, the video I think I am going to use, dissecting fruits to examine and count seeds (estimation skills) ..... they have some k and 1st curriculum, but nothing in second... it is mandated that I teach this, thus the reason why...... what do I say about why I selected this particular goal for these children? It would be a stretch to say anything other than it is mandated curriculum..... I need some ideas for a link..... says prior knowledge, interests, abilities, and needs..... Help!!!!
TracyOK - Should have put that name in, I guess!!!
K - Thanks for the advice!!  I want people to tell me like it is... My feelings would be more hurt if I don't certify
Lana - TracyOK, a BIG thanks to you for your help on my ss and the arts entry. You really helped me clarify my goals, and, thanks to your help, I scored well on that entry.
Susan (NC) - Tracy, your advice for literacy sounded great - I put it in my files; having started writing about that one yet; lots of ideas spinning around/
Debbie Mc. - Lynn, connect it to those children's interests, needs, prior knowledge. Must for the standards.
TracyOK - Thanks for your kind words...to be honest, I forget who all I read for!! (old age, I guess!!)
Amanda - Lynn, could you not try to tie it to interest of the children
3rd Grade Jane - well-i am fast and furoius so thsi is making me CRAZY !
K - TracyOK are you for hire? I may need advice when I get to the meat of writing up entry1.
Lynn/3/Charleston - i need some ideas to get me going....... I know what it wants, how do I get there?
3rd Grade Jane - Don't ya'll just love my typing!
Kinderjane - Lynn3- I bet they have shown interests in seeds--in apples and oranges at lunch. Acorns and stuff on the playground? Do you have plants in your classroom? Have they shown an interest?
TracyOK - K...you know where to find me! I read the messages on the ring daily..sometimes more than that! I'm "hooked."
Amanda - lynn go back to those standards and think about everything your children have said
Dana in MS - 3rd Jane, didn't even notice your typing - looks alot like mine!
Kinderjane - Lynn3- does it build on what they did in 2nd?
TracyOK - I'm at school where I'm supposed to be working in my room....but couldn't resist the lure of my computer and this chat room!!!
Lynn/3/Charleston - they have no plant curriculum in second, and I have written about the link from K and 1 curriculum.... that is prior knowledge, but not specific.... now, needs, interests, abilities?????
Leigh - Kinderjane i took your advice and started entry 3 an entry I feel better about. I know my childen well and have worked and changed my environment often to accomodate.
Kinderjane - Lynn3-can you tie it in to other units you'veone this year? Living things?
3rd Grade Jane - k-jane- I think that i may finally get it for 3!!! I redid the beginning again- classroom setting-relevant stuff.
Lynn/3/Charleston - Jane3, are you from NC or SC?
K - I wish that I could get into my building on the weekends!
Dana in MS - We are glad you couldn't resist Tracy! I wish we could get in our classrooms to work during holidays and weekends. They set a burgler alarm!
Lynn/3/Charleston - we did soils first, and we did plant seeds in soils to see which was more condusive to growth..... but how do I get the link?????
3rd Grade Jane - Sc- but I taught in Thomasviile Nc for 3 years-loved it.
TracyOK - How nice, Debbie!! Usually my computer at home is "otherwise occupied" on Saturdays!!
Susan (NC) - Tracy - you are at school today? Gosh, I feel lazy!
Kinderjane - Jane 3 and I taught together 21 years ago. We refound each other on the ec-gen ring!!!
K - Then again... if we could get in, we might spend every waking moment there!
Bubba~nc - Jane........my grandma grew up in Thomasville
TracyOK - Susan, only because I haven't done much of anything except be lazy over the vacation!! And we go back to school Tues.
Lynn/3/Charleston - jane, you know the science curriculum for sc then.... I went to the sc website and have linked the science standards from k and 1 to the third curriculum..... but how do I get a link in interest, abilities and needs?
3rd Grade Jane - She may soon wish she hadn't ! lol
Kinderjane - Lynn3- that is a great link! Building on what they did with soils!
Lana - I found a great book for any of you who are mentoring: Preparing Teachers for National Board Certification (amazon.com)
Dana in MS - The only reason I have the computer today is that Michael took Amy with him to a friend's house for about an hour!
Leigh - Jane I am in Salisbury, wish we had snow
3rd Grade Jane - We lived in Th. year before last. Do you have relatives there now?
Dana in MS - Thanks Lana! I had not heard of that book!
Debbie Mc. - We won't get to go back on Tuesday. Too much snow and low temps. I need to get back.
K - Leigh, what state?
TracyOK - never heard of that book, Lana...I will have to check for it....I feel inadequate at times with mentoring.
Leigh - NC
Debbie Mc. - Kelly!
Bubba~nc - ewwwwwwwww.....thanks LANA........will get it........our county is having a big session at the beach with NBCT and bankers and candidates in FEB.for a whole week........that bbok will be helpful
Lynn/3/Charleston - good thought, kinder, that is why I love you guys! you keep me from going crazy.... four cups of coffee later and just now getting what I needed... but my bathroom sink is clean... and so is the tub!!!
Mary Lou - O.K. Guys, Help! I am writing on entry #5 Professional Partnerships. As many of you know I do workshops on Phonological Awareness and K writing. I find myself writing more about how fabulous P.A.is then how fabulous my workshop is! Do you think evaluation and feedback forms from participants would be good for documentation?
Susan (NC) - When does everyone go back? We have a teacher workday on Tuesday and the kids are supposed to start Weds. but with this weather - who knows?
Bubba~nc - Jane..yes........I sure do
3rd Grade Jane - I wan snow for the day we go back- I just love a good ol/snowday !
Lana - The book is pricey, but excellent. I'll bet the local NEA would pay.
Kinderjane - I feel like I am mentoring by the seat of my pants! I do feel like I have a much better "grasp" now on what they want. Esp. ss/arts! I have read soooooo many entries!
Mary Lou - We are having a Nor'easter!
K - I go back Weds.
Debbie Mc. - Yes, Mary Lou. Also documentation on how someone has implemented your techniques in their classroom and helped more students.
Lana - Mary Lou, yes those sound like excellent documentation documents.
TracyOK - Yes, Mary Lou...go for it with the feedback forms!! But do make sure you tie everything in to how your professional workshops impact your own kids and their learning.
Bubba~nc - I go back Thursday
Lana - Now, I feel like I almost know what NB is about. If I could redo my entries, I'm sure they'd be better.
Mary Lou - I know it impacts the kids tremendously as I see it in their reading and writing but how do I show that?
Kinderjane - We have workday Tues and kids on Wed. I really miss them!
TracyOK - I know how you feel, Kinderjane...I'm hoping I will be a better mentor after I have assessed!!
Debbie Mc. - We all feel that way Lana. But I felt much better about mentoring after going to a facilitator's workshop.
K - Does it impact your students by increasing your knowledge in the area? I have workshops that I need to include.
Leigh - K where are you, we go back Tues. for a writing workshop
Lana - Mary Lou, say it; give some examples...
Lynn/3/Charleston - tracy, is it always how it impacts "your own class?" When I talk at the leadership conference, it will keep me away from my "own kids" but hopefully impact thousands of other kids with the 4block method.....
Kinderjane - Mary Lou, tell and give lots of examples. Maybe compare where they were before you implemented and after.
Mary Lou - I have also done a few workshops. Should I use various feedback forms to show I have been around the state?
K - Maryland
Lana - Debbie, I'll have a chance to go to all three fac. workshops this summer. They're being offered three in a row in Vegas. Should I go?
3rd Grade Jane - We go back on Wed. I need more time just in case I begin to get on roll of "getting it" what I am doing, that is.
Debbie Mc. - Some people don't like them but they helped me feel more secure. Of course assessing would be great!
TracyOK - I'm not sure about that one, Lynn....to be honest, I did not do well on this entry, though I thought I had great things to use and to write about...I truly don't think I tied it in well to my own students' learning.
Bubba~nc - Lana..how pricey is the book? I am mentoring amny in my county......we have 19NBCT..(me included) and over 50 candidates and bankers............I might be able to get our central office to buy it
Lynn/3/Charleston - k in Maryland....... where in MD? my mom is at the head of the chesapeake bay, and i wonder if she is snowed in.... i am concerned about her
Lana - I'm very fortunate. This summer I can assess then go to fac. workshops. Lots of support coming in our state (NV) The book is $40.
3rd Grade Jane - K jane- please move back to Rock Hill right now. I need you and your wisdom.
Susan (NC) - I think someone said the book mentioned is $40.00 through Amazon.com
Leigh - Mary lou i used a letter from a parent explaining how gow her child's phonetic awareness increased along with a letter from speciasl ed teacher and examples
Bubba~nc - THANKS.I think they can swing that!!!!!!!!!
Kinderjane - Are others official mentors in your district? We are the first to certify and are just volunteering to help the 4 newbies.
Leigh - my typing is the pits
JeniJJ - Hi...a lot of people here today! I can only stay a minute. My roommates and I are going to a movie at 2:00. The Family Man. Hopefully it will put me in a better mood. I'm so depressed!
Debbie Mc. - I'm the only official one in my district.
TracyOK - That sounds like a good idea for documentation, Leigh.
Mary Lou - Leigh, What did the letter from the spec. ed. teacher say?
Amanda - don't be you can do this
Debbie Mc. - I want to see that movie.
Debbie Mc. - Kelly!
JeniJJ - The holidays are over, I'm alone again for New Years, nothing is happening in my life, and I haven't even begun this huge process that everyone says is a killer. I think I am intimidated. And I haven't gotten my box so...
Lana - We have six official mentors in my district. Since we had no NBCTs, we had candidates mentoring. Only two of the six certified. So now we have bankers in need of mentors. It's a little crazy this year.
K - Is it necessary to get letters? I have other types of documentation...
Kinderjane - Jane- I was thinking today after we talked on IM--I don't see how people do this without computer links to others!
TracyOK - I remember getting depressed and really doubting myself through the process, too...it is very natural!
Mary Lou - JeniJJ When do you expect to get your box? Do you have any of the directions, say for entries #5 & #6?
Susan (NC) - JeniJ - if you want a good movie; I'll suggest "CASTAWAYS" with Tom Hanks, my hubby & I had a movie date last week (something I haven't done in a long time!) The movie was great!! 4 years on an island and I was complaining about NB stuff LOL
Kinderjane - Lana- We had 3 of 3 certify! That made it even better.
Debbie Mc. - Jeni, honey! Relish that time to get to know yourself. You don't need a man to have a good time! That happiness is inside you. Dig for it! Like Doroty says--you had it inside you all the time.
K - Leigh really helped me today on the ring. She really motivated me to look at things again.
3rd Grade Jane - Are you sure that you guys felt confued this time last year. I feel like i should understand what the questions mean, etc.
TracyOK - 3 of 3 certifying would be great!! It is hard when one of your "cohorts" doesn't make it.
JeniJJ - I teach year round so the next two months are useless. But I think I will focus on ideas. I have no idea what to do for science or social studies. I have MCGEN directions for five and six so I'd like to get going on that.
Lana - Kinderjane, that's because you are such an ispiration. I know reading your posts really helped me last year!
Lynn/3/Charleston - JeniJJ, as a newbie, I can suggest that you videotape every science thing that you do that is worthy.... those videotapes are the PITS trying to get just the right one!
Amanda - I sure was confused, I think I just now understand it all
Debbie Mc. - I felt confused for the whole year.
K - Miss Congeniality is a really good 'no brainer'. My 19 year old went to it twice this week. Very funny...
3rd Grade Jane - k-jane-I need all of the help amd support I can get. i do know some loners, though. i am the only one I know doing much of this in my district.
anne - bubba - where in NC are you?
Mary Lou - Jeni You could definitely do entries 5 and 6 if you have two months off.
Debbie Mc. - Jeni, can you get the directions for the entries from somebody else. You could work on some of that writing before you have the box.
Kinderjane - I'm leaving now to go on a date with my husband. See ya'll on the ring!
Lana - It's hard for people to understand how difficult this process is until they get into it themselves.
3rd Grade Jane - I need to go to see the no Brainer! That is up my alley.
Amanda - I suggest you do work on 5 and 6 get started that is the hardest part
Debbie Mc. - Jeni, how old are you?
JeniJJ - I am teaching a class that really only focuses on literacy this year. So I haven't planned much Social Studies. Any ideas for themes? These are second graders who were retained so are a year older. Bye Kinderjane...HAVE FUN!
Lana - To all newbies, just GET STARTED! The first words of each portfolio are the hardest.
K - JeniJJ, read up on the Science Foundations document in the files. It helps with inquiry.
Leigh - Bumped out sorry. My special ed teacher is writing it over the holidays.
JeniJJ - Debbie...I will be  30 this year. AAAHHH!
Lana - JeniJJ - I did careers for a ss theme and scored well (thanks to Tracy) and others on the ring.
TracyOK - I did careers for S.S., also.
Leigh - She told me it will explain how my students reading in controlled readers has improved
Dana in MS - Jeni your life is just beginning! Make the most of it and read THE RULES if you really want to find a man!
3rd Grade Jane - I have shoes older than you JeniJJ !
JeniJJ - I already taught careers during summer school and while reading Our Neighborhood at Work in Open Court. Thanks though.
Debbie Mc. - Jeni, I have a niece who went through this period. She's 33, not married now. Comfortable and having the time of her life. When she stopped worrying, she became content and guess what. Nice, steady guy now. She won't discuss marriage with him though. Says they have a whole life for that.
anne - has anyone done economics for the ss entry?
TracyOK - JeniJJ, you are young!! Many of us are much older than 30!
Leigh - She has moved a couple kids up with her 2nd grade groups
K - I did a coummunity unit with economics as a focus
Kelly - Thirty? Hmmm...my son will be 27 next month!....and I was 27 when I had him!
Leigh - Anne i am doing ecomomics for first grade
K - I wish that this had spell check!
Rose - Hello! My, I must have missed a great deal. What is this about finding a man? What are we teaching our young students?
JeniJJ - I am excited to do literacy. I have a great student in mind and a unique situation I think will really work well.
anne - k - I would love to chat with you sometime about what you did. what grade do you teach?
K - I teach 2nd grade.
K - What state are you in anne
3rd Grade Jane - Well- I have a 2r year old drummer son-he plays in a blues band. maybe you could get him to go back to UGA and study this time!
TracyOK - Well, Jeni, how about a theme that is situation-specific for your class...my friend did well on this one doing a unit on Mexico because she got a new student from Mexico who could not speak English...enlist your students' help in asking them topics they are interested in...you could do that during a class meeting, perhaps.
Leigh - K I am glad I motivated someone
anne - leigh - i would love to compare note with you. i tried doing economics with K . am currently trying the write up. difficult at times!
Dana in MS - Maybe someone can send you the literacy directions so you can get started and not feel like you are treading water waiting on the box!
Rose - Mary Lou, I've been reading where you have been up typing at 3:00a.m. Do you always get up that early?
Debbie Mc. - I don't know where my post went but Jeni, I have a niece who is 33. Went through this same thing that you are. She's 33 now. Not married, content and having the time of her life. It will come when you're ready. Enjoy this time to grow and experience life and yourself. A man will not make you any happier. If you're content and happy with yourself, he might enhance that but will not make you have a happy life. It's inside you.
3rd Grade Jane - He is 23-the drummer son.
anne - k - i'm in NC
TracyOK - JeniJJ, then I would start with Literacy...you can start saving or probably have already been saving writing samples....I saved from every kid in class and changed my mind a dozen times about which child I would use!
JeniJJ - I feel old. My only dream in life was to have a family. I haven't even dated much...you don't meet many guys in elementary school  I began raising my brother when I was six because my mom was sick so I am old for my age.
Mary Lou - Hi Rose! No, I don't always get up at 3:00 a.m. but I do ususally get up at 4:30 a.m. so I can have some quiet time and get some work done. I'm really tired by 8 o'clock, though!
JeniJJ - I have saved lots of writing samples that hopefully will come in handy when I finally get my box! I don't know anyone to copy instructions from.
3rd Grade Jane - Jeni- I also have an unmarried daughter close to your age. It will happen when you least expect it.
Leigh - Anne I am in NC too
Dana in MS - Jeni - listen to Debbie - she is VERY WISE!
K - Leigh, I told my husband that I needed to stay in my PJs for the next 3 days or I would risk not finishing this process! This is my only chunk of time off! He sound that maybe I should!
anne - JeniJJ - where are you - in what state?
Lynn/3/Charleston - jeni..... my only dream in life was to be a teacher..... and i got married and raised a family before I could get to fulfill my dream...... things come when they are meant to come....
K - Anne, what grade do you teach?
Rose - Mary Lou, have you completed most of your entries? You were well ahead of us in August when I joined this group! I have made an attempt at 2 entries but it is hard to stay focused.
JeniJJ - Jane...I wish my family was supportive like you! They think there is something wrong with me. It certainly doesn't help.
Dana in MS - HEY GIRLS! Can one of you "newbies" send the instuctions for literacy to Jeni?????
Debbie Mc. - Experience Dana. Don't you wish you were as smart at 20 as you are at 40?
K - He SAID that maybe I should. Sorry for the errors!
anne - Leigh - where in NC? K - I teach kindergarten
TracyOK - Preach it, Debbie...you are so right!
JeniJJ - I think things don't just come, you have to make your life what you want it to be right? If I don't go places to meet people, I won't. I'm sorry for being off topic! I teach in California.
3rd Grade Jane - no- things are just not lke they were when your parents and I were younger . They probably just want you to be happy, though.
K - JeniJJ what state are you in?
Leigh - K I can relate. I NEVER go with out makeup or being dressed, I DO NOW
Mary Lou - No! I have written most of 5 and 6 and started #3. I am in the middle of my S.S. unit on Germany, and only now collecting literacy stuff. Science still scares me to death and I haven't done much with it at all!
K - Where in California?
Lana - Gotta go run some errands. The "city" closes down here on Sunday; so it's Sat. or never. Happy new year, everyone!
Kelly - Lana - Happy New Year to you, too! Tell Harry hi for me!
Leigh - Salibury nC and you
TracyOK - Mary Lou, Science scared me to death, too...I think I worked harder on that entry than any other.
anne - I'm in Raleigh
3rd Grade Jane - well does anyone have nay words of wisdom for entry 3? i almst missed my nail appt. becaue of dear ol'3 !
Mary Lou - See ya Lana! Jeni, I can send directions. Email me privately: mryshuster@aolcom and send me your snail mail and remind me what entry!
Susan (NC) - Jeni, I could "fax" you the instructions for literacy when I get back to school Weds. if you want?
JeniJJ - K...Southern California...Ventura County. Los Angeles Unified School District.
Leigh - One great thing is I have now lost 4 pounds over the holidays to busy to eat.
Dana in MS - Oh yes, Tracy and Debbie! I do WISH I had the wisdom then that I have now! I would not want to go back though!
TracyOK - Which is 3? Community?
Rose - My state gives us two days off to work on NBC and I was wondering when the best time to take advantage of this time. Will I need it to box up? Or should I save them in case I'm dying at the end?
Debbie Mc. - Me either, Dana! Life gets better with age.
Leigh - Anne are you going to ncae workshop in Jan.
3rd Grade Jane - yes-i went to that when I got balled in my social studies.
JeniJJ - Anyway, I should go get ready for the movie. Susan I don't have a fax, but thank you! Mary Lou, I'll do that...thanks!
Kelly - Rose - save them for now.....you'll know when you REALLY need them!
K - JeniJj, I wish that I could fly the stuff out to you. I am a west coast girl at heart!
Dana in MS - Jeni! Mary Whitely is down there and Nancy Brown! Mary is "serafin" on the ring - she is terrific! (nancy too!0
3rd Grade Jane - 3 is communities-
TracyOK - Debbie, how old are you? Do you mind me asking? I'm 41, soon to be 42!
anne - I'll be there. are you?
JeniJJ - If anyone has more ideas for themes in Social Studies, I'd love to read them on the ring.
JeniJJ - Dana...how do I find out where down here? Do you know them?
Debbie Mc. - 44, Tracy. And I love every year of it! I'm much better at 44 than at 22. Or 33 for that matter. Imagine how great I'll be at 55!
Leigh - Yes maybe we can meet email me later we can figure out a way
3rd Grade Jane - do not ask me that question- the age thing! just kidding..i want to be the oldest to certify !
Dana in MS - Mary Lou I knew you'd come through for Jeni! Jeni is there a fax machine at school?
TracyOK - The community entry was not one of my favorites, either...my video did not show much "kid to kid" interaction....I've really improved in that area since certifying, though, thanks to Responsive Classroom!!!
JeniJJ - Gotta go, thanks everyone! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope your year is full of blessings!
Lynn/3/Charleston - jane, at the rate I am typing I WILL be the oldest to certify.....
JeniJJ - Dana, I'm not at school for two months.
Debbie Mc. - You too Jeni! Relax! Enjoy your life!
Leigh - Tracy Responsive Classroom?
Mary Lou - Bye Jeni, Talk to you later!
TracyOK - I love your positive attitude, Debbie!
Susan (NC) - This age thing has started me thinking...........can anyone tell us what the oldest NBCT was? so far anyway//
Dana in MS - Send me your email address and I will contact serafin for you and Nancy. Nancy is the science guru! Both are single and happy! Serafin adopted a daughter who is a teenager now. They are in LAUSD
Kelly - JenJJ - both Nancy and serafin read the ring....post a message that you want to connect to someone in LAUSD..
K - I am going to make a quick meal... be back shortly!
Mary Lou - Hey Guys, Speaking of age, I'm right there with ya 42 this year and lovin' it! Much, much better than 20's or 30's!
Carol - Rank me among the frustrated and stressed this holiday break! I've been reading the files on Sci. Bless Kelly for saving all that stuff!
Rose - Do you guys find that once you live through this process and maybe certify that then you have time to digest more knowledge? Do you know what I mean. Sometimes I am so busy trying to figure out and reflect that I just wish I could read and learn. I guess I'm still overwhelmed.
TracyOK - Yes, Leigh...all their books are great help with the community entry...wonderful stuff.....go to responsiveclassroom.org
anne - Leigh, I'll do that. got your email address. thanks
Dana in MS - Ewww Jeni! Get those directions so you can get to work and you need a copy of the standards to start studying, too!
Lynn/3/Charleston - dana, what grade is dana??? and isn't there a jane in SC who is certified?
Debbie Mc. - Hey, that young thing is for the birds. We all know that life gets better with every stage.
3rd Grade Jane - Lynn-I need to read again what you are working on. I do think that 3rd grade is aort of hard to do-with NB. I have lots that I could be using for literacy in 1st which I taught for 10 years.
Debbie Mc. - Yes, Rose and you can enjoy that learning!
Lynn/3/Charleston - jane, can you scroll to it, or do I need to repost it??
3rd Grade Jane - kinderjane is certified.
Dana in MS - I teach kindergarten in MS. I just certified this year.
Mary Lou - hey Jane, Doesn't that sound good - "kinderjane is certified."
Kelly - Rose - I think you just keep growing - SO much out there to learn about!
3rd Grade Jane - I think that I can just scroll down-you do mean here-right? if it is posted on the site I can get to it there, too.
anne - Dana, what did you do your science on with k kids?
Susan (NC) - Was there a chat last Saturday? My ISP wasn't working so I had a week of "internet withdrawal" not good......
TracyOK - And I learn every day from EVERYONE on the ring....
Mary Lou - We Kindergarten teachers need to get together!
Debbie Mc. - Not just NB stuff either, Tracy.
anne - Susan, where in NC are you?
Dana in MS - class pets and mealworms - did pretty well on it
3rd Grade Jane - Guess what- i cannot scroll down here!  not enough.
Rose - You are really right Tracy. I cannot go a day without reading the ring. It is a part of my life now.
Rose - Mary Lou, I'm kindergarten, too. and I love it.
Mary Lou - Jane & Dana, Do you do "Guided Reading" with your kinders?
Lynn/3/Charleston - that might be the way..... we can do it by email...... I am just having a real problem linking the learning... and here we are tied to a very tight curriculum, no room for just deviating because kids are interested in something.... we have to create the interest, something that I attempted, but really didn't manage, although the video that I am thinking of using sure shows enthusiasm.....
TracyOK - That's for sure, Debbie....life friendships have come my way from the list...I feel very fortunate!
3rd Grade Jane - I like the way the Jane part sounds !
Dana in MS - Right Debbie! You will form some "soulmate" friendships through the ring!
Susan (NC) - Anne, I'm in Bryson City (near the Cherokee reservation)
3rd Grade Jane - Kinderjane is not here right now- I am 3rd Garde Jane. I do do Guided reading-Cunninham model.
Dana in MS - I do a form of guided reading -
anne - Mary Lou, I teach K and I don't do guided reading yet. I think I will be forced to as my county is now saying K kids have to be reading at the emergent level before they can leave K. bummer!
Mary Lou - Oh, that's right, Kinderjane left for a date! Hard to keep track of everyone today!
Leigh - My class is not easy to deal with lots of behavior needs I want to tell what all we have done to correct is entry 3 the place
Kelly - I do Four BLocks, too....have a first-second split class this year. I LOVE Four Blocks!
Rose - Anne, where are you? What level do they consider emergent? In Reading Recovery terms?
Dana in MS - Girls, I have to go! sorry! Jeni, write me at carbag@network-one.com!
Debbie Mc. - And of course, Kelly taught me about 4 Blocks! She's a great teacher!
anne - I do the Building Blocks with my k kids and I love it!
Mary Lou - I have done a lot of 1-on-1 reading with my kids, but not a group, reading together, etc. I am going try it this year. Hey Kelly, I went to see Patricia Cunningham and got some "Building Blocks" stuff that I love! I did the "special name of the day" and the kids loved it!
3rd Grade Jane - So do I. i have a very young class-so they benefit greatly from it. i am rather eclectic, though in what i do.
Lynn/3/Charleston - from some who certified, the video portion can be in two parts, they say don't show the beginning, but I showed an apple and had them (whole class) name properties, then do the same in their groups with a bean pod (which I repeatedly called a pea pod.... don't want to use it cause of that, but oh well).. then we moved into dissecting fruits and finally i wrapped it up with word bank, inquiry content chart... and then what we would do the next day..... what if I used part 1 the apple, bean, and part two the end of the fruit dissection and the word bank and inquiry chart..... i get from the instructions that that is where they would show they grasped it and communicated knowledge....
TracyOK - Personally I wouldn't dwell on the behavior stuff...I'd mention it, though.....I think it is more about building community, which the behavior stuff is just a small part of...but this is only my 2 cents worth.
anne - Rose, In in Raleigh NC and emergent level is level 4 - not necessarily very high, but when you have a lot of kids coming in with NO print concepts, it's tough.
Mary Lou - Level 4 by the end of K? I think that's high
Rose - four is high if they say they can't go to 1st without it
3rd Grade Jane - I am using the STC kit-we have a scinec guru on grade level. The manual you can purchase if you want it.-It is about $30. it is inquiry-all the way.
anne - that's the way we're all feeling. it's very frustrating!
Rose - You'll always have high reading students but there is more to reading than just saying the words. What critera do they use to pass/retain a student?
TracyOK - I do Guided Reading (Fountas and Pinnell)
TracyOK - And I simply must sign of and get some stuff done here in my classroom...been nice "seeing" you all!!
Leigh - I need to go, need to at least acknowledge my husband today.
3rd Grade Jane - Lynn-E-mail me. wjlcwilliams@aol.com
Debbie Mc. - Our district may be changing supers and I'd love to have some names of programs that are working in other districts. I want to bombard somebody with these.
Lynn/3/Charleston - i will jane.......
Lynn/3/Charleston - thank you
Kelly - Bye Tracy - talk to you later!
3rd Grade Jane - I am still waiting for words of widsom from ya'll about Entry 3 !
Debbie Mc. - Bye Tracy! Don't work too hard. That's where I need to be. The state dept. would not be impressed with my classroom if they saw it now!
Kelly - Hi Mary Lee, can we help you?
anne - this is something new for us this year. Up to this point there had not been any county wide criteia. Part of our asessment also has to be retelling. If they can't retell, then they can't move to the next level of reading.
TracyOK - Bye, y'all!
Debbie Mc. - I'm sorry Jane. Ask again. I'm in and out of the room.
Mary Lee - Tracy OK, where are you from? We have a Tracy OK who used to teach first but now does fifth? She used OK and had the kids use OK becasue of her hyphited name Oswalt-Kowal
anne - bye, tracy. happy new year
Rose - I don't know that I know anything great about entry 3 but I did mine on getting a new student. It worked well, I think.
Kelly - Jane - I think you need to show the community you've built - how the children work together (maybe to solve a problem, but doesn't have to be). I've missed so much of this chat -= I don't know if someone recommended the responsiveclassroom.org site - it has GREAT books - including the Morning Meeting BOok....
3rd Grade Jane - I need words of wisdom for entry 3- I guess i am afraid that I will leave something important out. I say way too much, i think.
Kelly - Hi Pat - can we help you?
Mary Lee - Kelly, you helped me lots last year--I am NBCT EC-Gen even though I am a reading specilaist.
3rd Grade Jane - I think that I have my 10 minutes- it is the writeup before thtathas me befuttled. The questions.
pat - Hi everyone. It's me. Pat from Ma.
Debbie Mc. - Second Kelly's suggeston. I'm sorry Jane. Can you be more specific?
Kelly - Mary Lee - CONGRATULATIONS! Glad to see you again!
Rose - Kelly, how much time do you spend taking care of the ring? It must be a great deal of time. Almost everyday I read that you've done this or that to help us. How long have you been involved with NBC?
Susan (NC) - Mary Lee, when you went through this did you "borrow " a class?
Kelly - Hi Pat! You always catch me off guard! Are you piling up the snow up there?
Debbie Mc. - Ring members would not believe how much time and effort Kelly puts into this ring. It should be a paid position! We take her for granted WAY TOO MUCH!
pat - Actually Boston has all rain. In Arlington...about 7 miles away...we have pretty heavy snow at times.
K - when I write up the verification for entry 5, should I say why the accomplishment was so important to the students? I am getting confused... I wrote a grant with some colleagues. I want to talk about the why of thegrant itself not so much the why of my writing it. Am I totally confused?
Kelly - Rose - Lots of time - but it's a labor of love! I've been around nbpts for a long time - but began as a candidate in January of '98. Hey there sinetag, we were just talking about you! Merry seasonal greetings to you!
3rd Grade Jane - i do use Morning Meeting and found out about it on the site-from the files, i think. I just do not know how much to include when answering the questions before the writeup on the 10 minute segment.
Debbie Mc. - Susan Douglas?
anne - As a newbie, all I can say is thanks, Kelly, for doing all that you do to keep this going!
3rd Grade Jane - Kelly- Is this the kelly who put all of this together? Thanks sooo much if this is that kelly.
Kelly - Hi Susan and Pattie! Happy New Year to both of you!
pattie from Al - Hey everybody..........
Debbie Mc. - K, you must show that it impacted your students. If it did not impact students, don't write about it. You must show how your students benefitted.
sinetag - You were talking about me? Uh oh
Susan- IL - Yes, Susan Douglas -- thought I'd check in and see what's going on.
Kelly - Jane - LOL - lots of help "putting it together"! Hundreds of people have all made this ring possible!
pat - I think kelly should certify just for the awesome job she does on this ring!!
K - Sorry that my question sounds confusing! It really impacted the whole school population, especially kinesthetic/tactile learners.
pattie from Al - It is not a good sign when you join the meeting and lose the connection in two seconds............
Mary Lee - Susan, Yes I had to borrow classes. I was working with new to level teachers at third grade so organized and taught Socail studies unit with arts for them--Our children's museum had was excellent commjnity resource and there wasa lot we could do with haiku, and the arts for Japan. My best score--It was harder to do community and science with borrowed classes but I do go inot the classes enough that I did--still weaker scores. community
Debbie Mc. - Sinetag--two words--hollywood boulevard. I have not forgotten.
sinetag - excellent!
pattie from Al - this is like a giant NB party.......happy nB year.......ha ha
Carol - I am working on science, where in the world did I get the BIG IDEA that I could do this?!?!?!?!?
Susan (NC) - I second that Pat.......Kelly needs a medal!
Rose - I guess I better go. It is freezing here in Atlanta! Snow flurries only but COLD!
Kelly - Sinetag - we have a listmember who was looking for help in LAUSD. We mentioned you and serafin.
3rd Grade Jane - well- I was never so glad to find information. It helps me a lot.
sinetag - which list member?
sinetag - we are, after all , a small district of only 40,000 teachers or so
Kelly - Okay - I want to know about hollywood boulevard! Debbie, do you have a great sinetag story that you're hiding from all of us?
sinetag - debbie: you can tell the story
Kelly - Susan - Kelly doesn't need a medal - she does, however, need eight points......
Debbie Mc. - No, just a joke from the chat one day. I don't like to tell other people's secrets
Lynn/3/Charleston - carol, that is what I have up on this screen right now! My really big idea for today is how to get out of doing this! I am just dry as a bone and can't make my links.....
sinetag - As I type this I am watching some Dick Clark game show and my neighbor Vicki Lawrence is on! This is so exciting! (not)
Simply Ani - so are we EC/Gen to be in here?
Bubba~Nc - I am
sinetag - I am not  but I AM mcgen
Kelly - sinetag - what a rich fulfilling Saturday afternoon - Dick Clark, Vicki Lawrence, and an EC-GEN chat! Life doesn't get any better than this!
Bubba~Nc - Nope...meant I am already certified....LOL
Simply Ani - Been there done that...EC/Gen
sinetag - you got it!
pattie from Al - I am an ec gen
Carol - I have read and read, and truly gained a little more understanding. my kids truly used inquiry science to explore magnets, but how does this knowlege help them? SHould my main goal be science as inquiry? Writing this is HARD!!!
sinetag - I didn't mention the tin of danish butter cookies...
3rd Grade Jane - for all of you who are helping us( newbies) thank you so very much.
Simply Ani - Science was very hard for me
Lynn/3/Charleston - what grade carol?
anne - bye, all. my son just brought me dinner!
Carol - I love to see those yellow happyfaces popping up. I need it.
K - What is the weather in LA, sinetag?
Carol - I teach 2nd.
Bubba~Nc - Carol..the science was the hardest for me.....acccccccccccccck
Mary Lee - Kelly, I know an individual who improved immensely due to your list serve-- You can do it--you've impacted sooo many other teachers and ulitmately their students.
Susan (NC) - I know this list has said time & time again there are no dumb questions.......but......what is LAUSD; did I get the letters right??
sinetag - kelly: who is the list member from LAUSD?
pattie from Al - jane, we easily remember your every feeling, that is why I help......Memories from the corners of my mind...tee hee
sinetag - the weather is about 70 degrees, sunny and breezy
3rd Grade Jane - well that I am good at!  :) :)
Simply Ani - snowing snowing
K - JeniJJ was the member from LA.
Carol - What do we USE knowledge about magnets for anyway? Kelly, I thanked you earlier for the files-=great sci. help there.
sinetag - Los Angeles Unified School District (aka The Happiest Place on Earth...
K - I am heading to LA!!
sinetag - oh JeniJJ I know her
Simply Ani - Does NC focus on the big Ideas in Science?
3rd Grade Jane - Wait it only made one !
sinetag - I'm willing to host a slumber party
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, please join me in telling her that she does not need a man at this stage in her young 30 years. That's all I'll say about that.
Simply Ani - When I started this...last year...I had no clue what they were talking about...Illinois here
Bubba~Nc - Kelly.THANKS for helping me last year....the files really helped me prepare for the AC tests..........THANKS SINETAG too
sinetag - Debbie: where I come from you often don't need a man at all!
Susan (NC) - ahhhhhhh - thanks sinetag!
Susan- IL - A question -- one of the teachers with whom I am working is a gifted pull-out teacher. She is doing MC/G. Anyhow, she usually has groups of 6 children. For her video one student was absent so she is one short of the minimum required by the directions.
Bubba~Nc - Ani...some counties do..
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, I live with one. Don't I know it!
Simply Ani - I would do the video again
Susan- IL - Do you think she can explain the absencse in her written commentary
K - I think that I need to get back to my portfolio. Bye...
Simply Ani - I would follow the directions
Susan- IL - She doesn't want to redo it
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, I may need to sign off. I'm getting giddy and giggly and I haven't even made any fruitcake today!
sinetag - sounds serious
lynn/3/charleston - kelly, my video is of the whole class, with small groups...... the library aide did the videography and she went from group to group..... is science supposed to be ALL small group or will this work?
Debbie Mc. - I would not send in a video with less than the minimum number of students.
pattie from Al - bye K. good luck on your portfolio
Simply Ani - I can understand her not wanting to re-do it..but..to be safe..I would re do
Susan (NC) - hey debbie, wait for New year's eve to get really happy........
Bubba~Nc - If the directions say no less than six children......she will have to .I would think
3rd Grade Jane - Thanks to all who have encouraged me here or through my posts. Ya'll cannot imagine how much this ring helps- or maybe you can ! Bye now-3rd Grade Jane in SC going to dinner with my hubby !
lynn/3/charleston - it is science....
Mary Lee - There's enough time to redo the video-might be even better with the studnets more used to the concept
Susan- IL - That's what I suggested but guess the final decision is hers to make
Debbie Mc. - Good idea Susan. Bye Jane.
Carol - Lynn, my science video is part small group and part class meeting discussing explorations. I am in Chas. too, mt. pleasant
Susan (NC) - Bye 3rd gr. Jane!! have fun-
Debbie Mc. - Susan, we can only advocate for candidates. They must ultimately decide on their own.
lynn/3/charleston - we should get together..... I teach in ladson, but berkeley county
Simply Ani - Science is a tricky one...would follow directions at all costs
pattie from Al - pat, are you from Al?
3rd Grade Jane - Happy New Year !
Susan- IL - I agree but sometimes it difficult
Debbie Mc. - I know Susan. I have the tendency to want to do too much. I have to stop myself.
Simply Ani - The National Science Foundation funds part of the National Board...that may be why the Science entry is so strict in its guidelines
Carol - Do you have good mentoring? I have great help, but hate to bother them. I forgot what grade you are., Lynn
patsey - Hello, I am from AR and attempting National Board in EC-Gen
lynn/3/charleston - no one in my school is doing it, and i cannot meet with the mentor group as i tutor after school for the county
Susan (NC) - Has anybody noticed that everyone seems to choose their same colors for each week? What does that tell you?
Simply Ani - I would find a mentor who can read your entries via email
Susan- IL - Another questions -- will candidates completing the 4 90 min AC, be able to take in notes this year?
Debbie Mc. - Lynn, can they not change the times around so that all candidates' needs are met?
Carol - Lynn, duh, I guess I should get the "3" for third grade? email me if you wish--ccook2a@yahoo.com
pattie from Al - someone said they got a response from Nb saying NO as of right now
lynn/3/charleston - debbie, it is also for credit, masters, and they have additional stuff to do beyond the portfolio... this box is enough!
Carol - Thanks, Lynn
Debbie Mc. - Well, find somebody else to help you. This ring is full of people. Just post and ask for what you need.
Susan- IL - Can't imagine doing more than the portfolio and what it takes to keep the rest of life going!
Pat - Lynn...they must be crazy requiring additional stuff beyond the portfolio. Someone needs to straighten them out!!
Debbie Mc. - Susan IL, NB has told candidates that they can write a letter about no notes.
lynn/3/charleston - hahaha, debbie, i have been today... my brain is stuck and i am looking to link to interests, ability, and need in science....... and y'all gave me a couple of ideas
Susan- IL - Write to the NB?
Carol - Our group does get college credit, but we get it just for getting together and helping each other and turning in that one MAJOR project--the portfolio! No other work required.
Debbie Mc. - Yes Susan. Sorry I wasn't clear.
Susan- IL - I'll have to suggest it.
Pat - Caro, our support group was the same as yours. Actually i found the ring to be far more helpful!
Simply Ani - Susan-IL...are you from Southern Illinois and a mentor?
lynn/3/charleston - i only got into this after spending two months on the ring and deciding that this was the best mentoring i could get
Simply Ani - I had a great mentor
Susan- IL - Yes. I have a support group and will also begin teaching a pre-candidates class in Jan.
Carol - I agree about the helpfulness of the ring!! But we only meet twice a month, so I can handle that too, I think. Time management is a weakness of mine, though! I should go work on Science some more
Simply Ani - I think I sat at your table at the first meeting with the state board last year
Kelly - I'm back!  Everyone should call nbpts about the business of taking notes into the AC ... they are supposedly making the decision about it in February! The more calls we make the stronger our position is!
Debbie Mc. - And I'm sure that Susan does a great job mentoring!
Simply Ani - I have been trying to call the NB all week...all circuits are busy
Susan (NC) - If only 1/2 of the stuff stays with me that I have read on the ring - it is worth 10 mentors!
lynn/3/charleston - well, you have the number if you want to compare notes....... feel free to use it! I could use a bit of support about now too.....take care carol....
Simply Ani - I agree...I told one of the candidates this year..she was very clear
sinetag - hey I have a big announcement!
lynn/3/charleston - kelly, should we call or write?
Debbie Mc. - All ears!
lynn/3/charleston - tell us, sinetag!
Susan (NC) - what is it sinetag?
Kelly - sinetag - YES>>>>>>>> we're waiting!
Simply Ani - do tell
sinetag - I've been losing weight (despite the tin of danish butter cookies) and JUST THIS MINUTE I finally (after about 4 years) was able to take my ring off!
lynn/3/charleston - congratulations!!!!!
Simply Ani - Congratulations!
Debbie Mc. - HOORAY FOR SINETAG!
Kelly - LOL - I love it! Good for you!
Pat - Good for you Sinetag!!! What's your secret??
Simply Ani - need to put that in your accomplishments..entry 6??lol
sinetag - thank you thank you
Susan- IL - Good going!
sinetag - i knew a conclave of women would relate to that
Susan (NC) - great! what's your secret? My diet isn't working to well over the holidays, wonder why? Munch munch!
Carol - Thanks, Lynn. I pulled some things out of the files about magnets to look at and jump start my writing again. I had to wait for that big announcment from sinetag--Of course i gained 5 lbs due to stress eating and holiday goodies!!  You Go, Girl.
sinetag - (sorry if I'm overlooking any men here!)
sinetag - actually, here's my secret:
lynn/3/charleston - carol, have you been to the sc dept of ed website to look at the standards for science?
Debbie Mc. - as we all lean closer to our monitors...
sinetag - I have been taking a very low dose of antidepressants and it has totally killed my appetite
Simply Ani - Is there a secret to getting through to the NB?
sinetag - I've lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks
patsey - sinetag, that is wonderful!!! I thought I'd loose weight once I started working on National Board.
Carol - I have them printed out for 2nd grade--that's one reason I chose magnets. waiting for advice about loosing that 5 lbs.
lynn/3/charleston - wow!!!!!
Debbie Mc. - Good Lord! sinetag! You'll be down to nothing in a few weeks!
sinetag - i ate horribly while doing my portfolio but I stressed it all off and actually lost weight
lynn/3/charleston - i need to do that, lose about 20 pounds, ever since i remarried (I married a chef) I have been struggling with weight......
sinetag - debbie: here's to hoping!
lynn/3/charleston - but!!!!! I will eat well in spite of NB!
Susan- IL - Actually I ate my way through the process.
sinetag - of course after i was done with the AC I managed to come down with mono
Kelly - sinetag - may I ask.....was it Zyban?
Simply Ani - marrying a chef...now that can't be all bad
sinetag - celexa
Carol - Lynn, Is there more stuff on the sc dept of ed that I need to look at? Someone gave these pages to me.
patsey - Getting thin should be easier!!!
lynn/3/charleston - he made me cook the other night just to be sure i still could....... we do eat well, that is for sure......
Susan- IL - All this stuff about eating has reminded me that my family needs to eat. Bye
Susan (NC) - Has anybody noticed how M&M's & hereshy kisses really stimulate the brain cells, ha!
lynn/3/charleston - carol, i would go to it and look at the science standards for first and K so you can link to prior knowledge using precise and concise terms!
Pat - I smoked my way through the whole process. Then got really sick with the flu last February and lost 8 pounds. Food is much better than cigarettes!
lynn/3/charleston - pat, there is another teacher who still smokes????? I thought i was the only one!
Carol - Lynn, how do I get to it?
Debbie Mc. - Carol, we're sorry. It's just that we don't get to talk any other time.
Carol - It's quite all right with me!
Kelly - Susan NC - I have noticed how M&Ms and hershy kisses stimulate my FAT cells, but not my brain cells!
lynn/3/charleston - www.state.sc.us, go to educators, and then to standards curriculum, science, then grade, you can see it without printing it.... I live at that site.
Debbie Mc. - Nothing stimulates my brain cells. They're old and worn out!
Susan (NC) - It is pretty bad when you get your fat cells & brain cells confused! I just keep shoveling them in.......when will I learn? But next month is my anniversary from NO SMOKING - 12 yrs; I'm proud of that!
Pat - Good for you Susan. that's an awesome, difficult accomplishment!! I'm jealous.
Carol - thanks, Lynn, I'll try it. The kids were interested in the topic and asking great questions, I just am having trouble making all of it sound meaningful in the grand science scheme of life!!!
Debbie Mc. - Carol, have you read Science for All Americans?
patsey - lynn/3/charleston, does that site offer other areas too? I am searching for ss standards
Debbie Mc. - Or Nancy's tips on her website? Good stuff!
Kelly - Susan - congratulations on the no smoking bit ..... yes Lynn, there are still a few of us puffing away, sad to say....I'm one of them. I have given up a vice every decade for three decades....I'm down to the smoking vice ... that's all that's left!
lynn/3/charleston - carol, it is second grade curriculum, i just checked.... so you will have the correct wording from the national science standards to back you up... you need to go there....
Carol - No, would it help? I am sitting here with Doing what Sci do, the National sci standards book, and a couple of others. I feel I have nailed the inquiry (I hope) based on the children's engagement
lynn/3/charleston - well, kelly and pat, if we ever get to the same conference, I can finally have a ROOMIE!
Nancy Brown - Kelly: smoking is next to go!
Debbie Mc. - Nancy is THE science guru. Ask her anything about science and she can answer.
Carol - Is Science for all Americans a needed resource?
Kelly - Nancy - I know! But THEN I get to start adding my other vices back in!
Nancy Brown - don't believe it
Debbie Mc. - Maybe not for everybody but it helped me.
Carol - Please tell me I don't have to give up my white wine (I don't smoke.)
Nancy Brown - that's okay kelly - make a swap.. smoking for ________ (you fill in the blank)
Susan (NC) - Can't remember who said it, (Mark Twain or somebody?) anyway, they said Giving up smoking is easy, I've done it 100 times!
lynn/3/charleston - FOSS and the National Science Standards say that at second/third the children should ask and answer questions, plan and conduct simple investigations, employ tools to gather data, use data to construct reasonable explanations, communication of investigations and explanations, and understand that variety of tools and investigations is how we come up with explanations..... i sorta have that memorized....
Debbie Mc. - We all have our addictions.
lynn/3/charleston - that is the inquiry goal
Carol - Thanks, Lynn. I have those very words right here in front of me. I didn't have that listed as one of my goals, but I will! That is really what we did! Thank goodness you can see some of it on my video (Here's hoping!)
patsey - Are any of you kindergarten teachers?
Pat - Carol if I remember correctly you can tell what preceeded and followed your video, too.
lynn/3/charleston - i listed my science goals and then said sort of "to enable the children to grow in scientific inquiry... blah blah, blah
Carol - Pat, yes that is true and I will. It should fit with inquiry. The other goals relate to things about magnets directly
Carol - Typing fast makes one sound like an idiot-we are all desperate and some of us are parents.
Carol - Lynn, you sound like you've finished your sci. How far along in this process are you?
lynn/3/charleston - carol, i am on page 2 of science, question 2 of it, and i have reams of video to pick from... just need some outside help in making decisions....
donna - yes, i should try that. My husband was supposed to be in charge of sci projects, but he bailed on me.
Debbie Mc. - Typical.
Susan (NC) - sounds like we are talking science- have to do another video before I write-
lynn/3/charleston - i have gathered stuff for professional development and am doing the right stuff for the other, but that is it.... oh, i made a community video, but it is not right, i lead, not the kids, have to do many more on that entry
Carol - Lynn, have you done other entries? I have rough drafts of 5 and 6. What is the topic of your sci.?
Carol - I have tons of notes for community, but no decent video
lynn/3/charleston - science is seeds...... plants.... the rest i have NO writing on at all....
lynn/3/charleston - i am writing up my first entry right now.....
Carol - It felt good to get most of 5 and 6 done. They are not as hard as science--although I will need to revisit 5 and 6, too. I haven't even taught ss yet, in infant stages of planning
lynn/3/charleston - i am going to do, and have started in SS, study of SC regions, we are in the process of Native American sand painting of the regions on cut out posterboard... dying sand with tempra paint, spreading glue on the tagboard and floating the sand, like glitter across it.... that will be the art, but I can get NO parent involvement at all, not even anyone who would stop at the sc border and gather info for a collage.....
Debbie Mc. - I've done sand painting with my kids.
Carol - Lynn, sounds like a bummer with no parents. In my neck of the woods, that is not a problem. The sand painting sounds great. I am going to do an economics unit with Food, will use the Project Approach somewhat
Debbie Mc. - Lynn can you involve them with homework? Or doing something at home?
lynn/3/charleston - i have one parent who is in college, and she might come in to help with the sand painting.... I am going to get a photo of her while she is there if she comes..... and I am begging another to come and read about regions with the kids, if she comes I will photo her, too..... you mean assign a project and have them work with the kids? How will I document that?
Debbie Mc. - Don't you just write about how the parents were involved? Do you have to send an artifact now? You are talking about SS entry, aren't you?
Carol - I told parents I would do phone conferences over the holidays and GUESS WHAT! I have been doing this stuff instead. I've got to find a better way to manage my time. (like when I said I was going 30min ago)
lynn/3/charleston - don't you need to prove what you say, debbie?
lynn/3/charleston - yes, i am talking ss
Carol - YES!
Debbie Mc. - The artifacts for SS/Arts that you send in are the instructional and the assessment artifacts right?
Carol - I meant yes to this being addictive. I think you can just write up parent involvement, it doesnt need to show in artifacts.
lynn/3/charleston - maybe i do not understand what i am supposed to be doing here, debbie, you mean i don't need to have proof of the art and parent involvement?
Debbie Mc. - Somebody tell me if I'm wrong here, but no, Lynn. You just write about how your parents were involved in entry one.
Debbie Mc. - The art you will want to send artifacts in to support what you say. But not the parent involvement.
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, I'm one of those genteel southern women. I just could neva be rude to anybody. My mama didn't bring me up that way. Teehee.
Susan (NC) - I think my goal # 3 (art) in the SS entry was a little weak; I know you have to address the goals and have them show that your students achieved them but........any suggestions?
sinetag - one thing you can say about those NBCT conferences, they're just LOUSY with southern women! :?
Debbie Mc. - This one didn't get to go.
sinetag - next year?
Carol - Debbie, my problem is with the integration of the arts and ss objectives. For ex. if I have ss goals like money in exchange for goods, goods and resources and do art work to influence people to come to our cafe, those do not seem to want to integrate--if you get my drift
Debbie Mc. - Hey, why do you think I"m trying to get this job that pays the big bucks?
sinetag - where are you located?
sinetag - what job?
Kelly - Okay, kids, I have to go. Talk to you all later. Happy New Year everyone! Don't celebrate too hard!
lynn/3/charleston - hugs and bug grins, debbie, this has been a big, i mean big worry for me........ it is enough to deal with the lack of involvement in entry 6... and I have reading sheets with extreme involvement from parents..... a log where i am most of the initiation, and i have to ask this, how do you PROVE the communication log with parents? I keep one, but do I need signatures from parents or something to verify authenticity?
sinetag - what big bucks?
sinetag - is there room for two?
Susan (NC) - Debbie, have you seen those "southern t- shirts" GRITS (girls raised in the south?) I get teased at my school when I tell them that I'm a "southner too" I was born in southern Canada - ha!
Debbie Mc. - Can you design your own money? Signs, menus, tablecloths, art for the walls. Window decor, etc.
sinetag - i was born in southern california
lynn/3/charleston - susan, what part of canada, i am married to a canuck
Debbie Mc. - Highly Skilled Educator with the Dept. of Ed. in Ky.
sinetag - Kentucky! Why you can DRIVE to DC!
Carol - How do decorations for the cafe relate to my ss goals? I guess if people like them they will exchange their money for our goods!
Debbie Mc. - 35% pay raise and 240 day work year. Mucho more than I make now.
sinetag - very good
lynn/3/charleston - i want kelly for education cabinet.... this guy from houston does not ring my bells.....
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, keep your fingers crossed for me.
sinetag - he scares me to death
sinetag - will do
sinetag - i expect you in DC for that conference next october
lynn/3/charleston - me too, i have been following texas education on my other mailring and it is not a pretty sight
Debbie Mc. - You have to integrate those art goals to the social studies goals. It has to occur naturally in your unit.
Susan (NC) - Lynn, I was born in Guelph, Ontarion (near Toronto)
sinetag - i found many excellent drinking establishments in georgetown last time i was there
Debbie Mc. - With bells on, hopefully! Watch, I'll have the money but other commitments with the new job!
lynn/3/charleston - ahhhhh, hubby is a native vancouverite
sinetag - this conference will be one of your committments
sinetag - alright I am off to ride my bike
Debbie Mc. - Carol, art is everywhere around us. Architecture, furniture design, everywhere.
Debbie Mc. - Bye sinetag. don't ride too far.
lynn/3/charleston - sinetag, i am jealous..... here in beautiful sc it is ugly ugly ugly weather........
sinetag - i ride exactly 3 miles around the island and then i'm done
lynn/3/charleston - get some sun for the rest of us
sinetag - well there's something to be said for a white xmas
Susan (NC) - well everyone - this has been fun; see you next year! Party on ..............bye!
Debbie Mc. - Oh, what a tedious exercise routine. Beautiful scenery, beautiful weather. I feel so sorry for you.
sinetag - bye
Debbie Mc. - Bye Susan, will get back to you on that entry.
Debbie Mc. - Ladies, my husband has dinner ready and is calling me.
lynn/3/charleston - how about they design the tablecloths???? bulletin board paper and markers, etc..... and i have a great idea for table tags....... those center things on the table at places like applebys?
Carol - Debbie, I don't see how to relate art to food naturally. Maybe it will in that the art is used to influence people and we will advertise our cafe (only to parents) but goods and resources was going to be assessed with a flow chart of types--no art in tracing food to its origin
Debbie Mc. - CAROL! Haven't you seen the food art? Chefs design food all the time! It's art! Right Lynn?
lynn/3/charleston - carol... table tags... those folded papers on tables???? make it all info about food with art renderings, or cut out collages from magazines......
lynn/3/charleston - like on one they can draw the food pryamid, and label lit, put art into it
Debbie Mc. - Bye ladies!
Carol - lynn, the table tag thing sounds good, I was thinking of a centerpiece,3D. You guys are spurring me on! I love that book that shows how you can sculpt with food!
lynn/3/charleston - we are going to do them on regions of sc for the lunch tables...... and put info about recreation on them
Carol - How do I make them? I love the idea, the kids could design them.
lynn/3/charleston - look at a christmas card..... lay it on the table so it stands up, fold up, and you have it
Carol - That could actually tie into the ss because of the info put on them (recipes, ingredients, history of the dish, etc.)
lynn/3/charleston - or you can make pryamids, that would take some folding and experimenting, but they could do stuff about food on it
Carol - I have patterns for folding 3D shapes, could enlarge them. I'll need to write all this down before I forget.
lynn/3/charleston - i have a tiny die cut at my school that could be enlarged..... maybe that would work, but you would have those die cuts at the taj mahal downtown wouldn't you?
lynn/3/charleston - we is problem solving here!
Patsey - Carol, could you tie in your food designed after some type of monuments or ?? some other historical structure from those regions of sc?
lynn/3/charleston - hiya patsey!
Carol - Lynn, you have really helped me, but we should probably both work on soemthing else (Like my science.) Thanks for all the ideas!!!! Email me if you wish.
lynn/3/charleston - feel free to call, you got my number, didn't you in msg?
Carol - Thanks, Patsey, I need to go now. Yes, Lynn I got your number. I have teenagers, sometimes they keep my phone busy. I will be in touch.
lynn/3/charleston - thanks! i could use some input on science... and i think you are at that point too.... phone is easier..... but i saved your email
lynn/3/charleston - i need to go too.... get writing again.....
lynn/3/charleston - take care... and happy new year!
Patsey - Good bye
