Donna - Genie-What area are you in?
Genie - EC-Gen
Genie - what about you, Donna?
Amy - Hi! I am a re-take candidate? Any others??
Genie - I'm a newbie
Amy - I missed it by 1/2 point! I need some advice.
Donna - Genie- I need to give you a friend's e-mail that was in ECGen.She is a great resource- AMcConnell@gcsd.K12.sc.ua
Genie - Oh,, wow!!!! How disappointing, Amy
Genie - That is wonderful, Donna, thanks
Donna - I am an Elem/Midd. Art cand.
Amy - I can't think of anything but what I could have done differently to get that 1/2 point. I am thinking about re-taking Entry 4.
Genie - What is your friend's name, Donna?
Donna - Ashton
Donna - She already has her nbct
Genie - Thanks....I'll email her. I do have some questions about my science/math video
Amy - Do either of you have a friend that is NBCT in EA GEN?
Amy - Hi, Jan! Hi, Jeff!
Jan of MI - Amy what area are you? I' nbct mcgen
Amy - I am EA GEN retake. I missed it by 1/2 point.
Jan of MI - yikes ow 1/2 pt
jeff - Hi
Jan of MI - How much does it cost to retake ACs
Amy - I can't decide what to re-take ---- assessment center or Entry 4.
Donna - That is a good question. That's what I need
Amy - All re-takes are $300 each
Jan of MI - wow that does not seem fair
Jan of MI - You know your DA's already it would just be a mater of adding this year's stuff
Donna - That's kind of of a rip-off considering each question was only 30 minutes...............
Genie - That is steep for 1/2 point
Jan of MI - But how do you feel about the AC
Amy - Yeah, the worst part is that I'll have to pay for all re-takes myself. I had a full scholarship last time.
Genie - You are still blessed! Not to have had to pay for the biggie!
Jan of MI - Hi Jeff are you candidate or NBCT?
Amy - I don't really mind retaking the AC. I am just concerned since only the most recent score counts.
Donna - It doesn't seem fair when we had all that time to write up the other portfolios
Amy - My deadline for portfolio is 4/15 and AC is Jan-June
Genie - Seems like the AC would be your best bet! That's what I would do...
Jan of MI - What part of the AC would you redo?
jeff - I'm a candidate EA Gen. This is my first time to this meeting.
Amy - Health and/or math --- I only need 1/2 point.
Genie - Was there an area in the AC that you didn't feel confident about?
Jan of MI - How competent do you feel in those areas
Jan of MI - Hi Jeff, welcome on the journey of your life!
Amy - No, the funny thing is that I scored well on the parts that I felt the worst about. Then of course did well on the parts that I thought I had bombed.
Jan of MI - Where are you all from? I am from Mich
Genie - Jan, are you NBCT?
Amy - I am from Georgia.
Jan of MI - Yep, MCGEN 2001
Genie - Amy, where in Georgia?
Amy - I am worried about the math because when under pressure, I have a hard time coming up with 2 solutions.
Jan of MI - How are you all feeling about your Doc. Accomp
Donna - Yes-welcome Jeff. they keep grading harder every year, I guess because there are more candidates
Amy - Hinesville --- south of Savannah
Jan of MI - Amy. There is a very good book about childrens miscues and misconceptions in math
Genie - Amy, I live between Atlanta and Jackson. I have a very good friend that teaches in Savannah
Amy - I felt great about those when I submitted the entry. I now wonder if I should have added in statistics.
jeff - Thanks, I've been working hard on it for a couple of months. I'm in Fl.
Jan of MI - I really don't think that they are scoring harder, I think that there are more candidates that are not scoring well because they are only in it for the money and do/did not realize what they were in for.
Amy - Jan, can you remember the title of the book?
jeff - Jan, that's good to hear.
Jan of MI - Amy are you talking about the DA when you statistics?
Donna - So they are in it for the recognition??? I was in it to become a better teacher.
Amy - Yes. I ran out of room so I did not add the statistics.
Jan of MI - If you email me I will get the title from the yahoogroups and forward it to you. My email is pardyj@yahoo.com
Jan of MI - Amy I am not sure that statistics help with the DAs I think it is clear and consise evidence that support what you did had impact on students.
Amy - I am in it to become a better teacher and help new teachers to improve.
jeff - I teach in Lafayette County, 45 min. north of Gainesville
Amy - Thanks!
Jan of MI - That is the best reason to be in it
Amy - Wow! Jeff, my in-laws live in NE GA.
Jan of MI - Donna, many states, pay so poorly that money is a big incentive for NBC
Genie - Where do they live, Amy?
Amy - Jan, give me ideas for clear and concise evidence
Amy - Cleveland and Gainesville
Jan of MI - I know that there are teachers in my district that are NBCT quality but there is not incentive for them to try. So They don't want to put out all of the effort. They saw what I had to do
jeff - Jan, where do you teach, I grew up in Kalamazoo
Amy - I've had many teachers tell me that they would never put themselves through what I did ---- not even for the 10% increase.
Genie - I have a question about my sc/ma video....The children are coming to me to show me the boat they designed to see if it would sink or float...not much of the groups, but a lot of talk w/ me about why their boats worked or not
Jan of MI - Okay Amy let's see. I worked on a tech support program where my kids were working with kind. kids to work in the computer lab. I had the teacher write a verification form that talked about how her kids were timid and lacked knowledge and that by second semester they had basic skills and could work on their own. I had a thanks from the tech support person for getting those little tykes into the lab and how valuable the program was for both groups of kids.
Jan of MI - Jeff I live in Ann ARbor and teach just north of there in a small dist.
Amy - Maybe that was where I missed the boat. None of my verifications went "all out." They were just general stuff.
Jan of MI - Genie, does your video show any of their discussion as they designed or modified their boats?
Jan of MI - How old are your kids Genie
Genie - Somewhat...they also had to estimate how much "cargo" (wooden cubes) it would hold once it floated...I teach kindergarten. It does show celebrating when one actually floated! It was cute. Not one child paid any attention to the camera
Jan of MI - Amy your DAs don't have to be fancy and glamorous you can have just a few that show good impact.
Jan of MI - Genie, that is awesome for little ones. It sounds like a video I would go with.
Genie - My videographer does show some groups working together.
Jan of MI - Genie if you feel that you talked too much or did not ask good questions those are things you can reflect on.
Amy - Bath time for the kiddies ------ gotta go. Thanks everyone for your help!
Genie - It is more than 15 minutes...but I figure when I re-tape it to standard VHS I'll decide where to start it.
Jan of MI - Is the ECGen portfolio really clear about the group stuff.
Genie - I believe that Entry 3 can be whole or small group....
Jan of MI - Jeff where are you teaching now? What do you teach
Genie - I will certainly read it again
Jan of MI - What is the math component of your video?
Genie - estimating the no. of cargo and counting until it sank
Jan of MI - That sounds fun and right on target. Also developmentally appropriate for your little ones
jeff - I teach in Lafayette County, Fl., I teach 2 gr.
Jan of MI - so you are EcGen too?
Genie - yes...it all came out of a discussion of the Pilgrims and Mayflower...one of them asked how that boat could hold all the Pilgrim's stuff. That naturally led to a unit on sink and float..although I usually do it later in the year.
jeff - yes
Jan of MI - What a good thing to include in your portfolio. I am sure you can easily tie it into the standards.
Genie - I think so...that is on my schedule for the week after Christmas
Jan of MI - You could really reflect on how you taught to the interests and needs of your kids
Jan of MI - Jeff. Have you video taped yet?
Genie - especially since none of them listed Pilgrims/Native Americans/Mayflower on our KWL chart initially
Genie - Jeff, have you picked a topic for your videos?
jeff - Yes, I've video science/math. I did a unit on the water cycle. The video shows the students using scales to weigh the amount of water which evaporated in a cup placed outside in the sun..
Genie - That sounds fun! Are you pleased with it?
CB - Hi - just checking (listening) - almost forgot about this
Jan of MI - What are your areas CB and KIM?
CB - emcart
kim - ec-gen
Genie - Kim, I'm ec-gen, too
Jan of MI - GEnie and Jeff are ECGen too
Genie - Well, I'm going to head to bed....Thanks Jan for your friend's name and email....I'll contact her.
Jan of MI - CB do you have to do two videso too
Jan of MI - your are welcome. you
CB - Heavin forbid! I do not!
jeff - Yes, there was a lot of math included in the science theme. Students demonstrated math strategies of counting up to determine the evaporation, and also demonstrated using a thermometer. I though it was important to show a lot of math integration. What do you think?
CB - But am redoing entry 1 and entry 4.
Jan of MI - Gee Jeff it sounds like a great activity for 2nd grade
CB - And a couple of assessments as insurance.
Jan of MI - Are you feeling okay about your DAs?
CB - DAs?
Jan of MI - I am going to offer you both a piece of advice that I learned my banking year and by reading enties Make sure to give evidence for everything and tie them to the standards
Jan of MI - DAs Documented Accomplishments/
CB - Okay.
CB - Well, am just starting on the DA's - that is organizing and writing.
CB - I have a basic understanding of what is expected.
CB - Just got to do the work.
Jan of MI - You should have an easier time this time because you have your old information and you are just updating for this year.
CB - I was too pushed the first time and did not do all the paperwork - oversights.
CB - I had too many things going on: ill parents and other punches that life throws at you.
Jan of MI - I can sure understand that. My banking year was sooooo much easier. I redid 2 portfolios and could really be focused.
CB - Yep - two entries - can take assessments a little later. Not as pushed.
Jan of MI - hey I need to go. It was very nice chatting with you. If you ever need help I am at pardyj@yahoo.com
Jan of MI - bye
CB - What area are you in?
jeff - I'm EC gen
CB - Well, must also leave. Good night.
jeff - Bye
