Kathy - I am an MC GEn NBCT. Does anyone ever come to these ?
Kathy - Are you all trying to earn National board certifciation?
Alisha - Is anyone having difficulty finding strengths in their EMD students?
Mit - What about the things we do after class?
Kathy - could u tell me what EMD stands for
Alisha - Educable Mentally Disabled IQ 58
Kathy - thanks
Kathy - I have never come here before. Are the people here trying to earn national board cert or are there other NBCT's here besides me
naneb - i am NBCT
Kathy - what is your area of cert?
Stenzel - Exceptional needs
naneb - ex needs
Kathy - I'm MC Gen
Kathy - maybe this discussion is not for me
Stenzel - Well is it about certifying?
Stenzel - Even if we are different certificates the process is similar
Kathy - is there a facilitator of this chat?
cole - I am trying for cert.
Stenzel - Wizzle are you out there?
naneb - sometimes wizzle is here but usually everyone just jumps in and helps each other
naneb - what questions does everyone have/
brenda h - Exceptional Needs: I have a question about Entry 1
Stenzel - Has anyone just gone in to take one assessment center question - what happens at the test site
naneb - is that the linking instruction and assessment?
rebecca - hello everyone. I have a question!!! If I discuss one case in which a colleague and I collaborated, is that ok? Do I need to have a series of accomplishments under this heading?
brenda h - Yes, that's it
naneb - the number of accomplishments is not as important as the quality
rebecca - I meant under the heading of collaborator for entry 4...
Stenzel - REbecca does it impact student and family also
brenda h - I'm doing Ancient Egypt with my student/performance based assesments
Stenzel - Is talking to that person, Rebecca an accomplishment
Cole - I have
rebecca - Family impact////indirectly, it's RE: student with behavior problems at school...A speech path & I worked closely on developing a program.
ldf - I am new to this and I am reading down these statements...rebecca, did you receive an answer to your question?
brenda h - IWill that be ok? Or should I do math or something with more concrete data?
Stenzel - Is it unique never been tried - being used by others
rebecca - yes i did ldf
rebecca - not really unique....research based for students w/autism
Stenzel - Sounds good!!
Jo - does anyone have an idea about what the question should look like for Entry 1?
ed - i work at a ntl blue ribbon school. is this appropriate to include in entry 4?
rebecca - thanks stenzel. You did what cole?
Stenzel - The question occurs after assessment has been made in a given area
Stenzel - Or the question comes first and it drives further assessment
naneb - I would use it only if you can show how being a blue ribbon school has impacted your students and made a difference for them
Stephanie - How many accomplishments is everyone using for entry 4?
Stenzel - Enough to fill the page requirements
Cole - I hav e aques about entry 3-social video-do they want to know the goal for uor academic lesson in the analysis and rhe goal for the social
rebecca - i ahve several accomplishments, really a lot of "mini-accomplishments"
Stenzel - I asked the question first, then did further assessments to plan for instruction
naneb - what ever accomplishments you use make sure they impact your students, that should be the focus, ask yourself "so what?" if you can't give a convincing reason for using the accomplishment then select something else
brenda h - Back to Entry 1/HELP! Stenzel, what area did you use?
Stenzel - When you look at how they want you to describe the accomplishments, you really start to weed out the mediocre ones.
Stephanie - I have used 3 big accomplishments, and took up the 12 pages explaining everything. My mentor feels like I need to use more accomplishments. She used 7. I don't feel like I could explain mine with the # of pages allowed. Any advice???
Stenzel - I used the area of reading/ decoding difficulties a multi-cultural student/ LD was having in reading
rebecca - entry 4 will is not my strenght, but it is the only one I have close to being finished.
Stenzel - I used five accomplishments
brenda h - Can I use SS(Ancient Egypt)/Several performance-based Assessments
Stephanie - Also, the 3 I used all overlapped the categories.
Stenzel - Got a 3.0
rebecca - excuse my mis-typing!!
Stenzel - It's Friday - don't worry we are all tiiiireed
brenda h - Stephanie, my mentor suggested I put mine into 3 or 4 big accomp. Someone else said no. I think it's up to you.
rebecca - brenda if I could answer you I would, but I can't
ldf - Stenzel are you saying you used 5 accomplishments across the three areas? Did you have multiple documentations for each accomplishment?
rebecca - i shouldn't be tired. school was cancelled all week b/c of snw! how about that?
Stephanie - Did your mentor get a good score? I don't know what my mentor recieved...
Stenzel - Yes, enough to prove what I did
brenda h - Stephanie, she passed and did well!
Jo - How did you find a mentor?
Cole - If I am doing reading -word analysis comprehension for my literacy can I still do another form of reading comp for entry 1?
brenda h - Jo,
Stenzel - Go to the nbc site and to your state and find out where your mentors are- that's what I did
ed - does anyone work in preschool setting?
brenda h - ing a class thru a grad college to help us thru this NB stuff. My mentor was thru this
Stenzel - I have a question for you ed, do you have transition planning in the preschool into KG.
Stephanie - My state found my mentor for me through the Applachia project (KY) I just got her last week, so I don't know how much help she will be, since this needs to be finished in 2 weeks.
ed - yes
ldf - For entry 1: would assessing a student for learning styles so understand his/her areas of strengh/weakness and best ways to learn fit with the assessment?
brenda h - Jo, this didn't go thru well. I'm taking a class thru a gradcollege...
brenda h - Stephanie, I'm in WV and going thru App. Project, also
Stenzel - Ed, where can I get info on how this process works at the preschool level
Teri - ed, I work in prek
ldf - what is the applachia project? So never heard of it
ed - what info do you want stenzel
Stephanie - Part of being in the project is being assigned a mentor. You should contact the person in charge in WV, where you have been getting info from.
Jo - Brenda, thanks..we're kind of on our own inCT
ldf - bad typo meant "sorry" not "so"
ed - teri what did you do for literacy entry
Stenzel - Our district does not do a transition plan and we have a preschool program - I want to know what the process for the meeting and paperwork is like?
Teri - I did it as a pilot last year and banked the score. I did it making a big book about brown bear brown bear
Stephanie - The App. project is a grant that was given to us. It gave us 1150.00 towards certification, for teachers who live in rural Appl.
brenda h - App. Project pays part of our investment in this NB. I think to get NB teachers in App. states
rebecca - where do you live steph?
ldf - oh, like here in SC; the SCEA pays for more part
Teri - stenzel, part of our prek trans process is meeting with teacher consultants and a K tchr from the child's home school
ed - stenzel we meet as a team with our k teachers and invite recieving school teachers if applicable and accompany parents to visit possible placements
Stenzel - Is it a fairly simple process - are there agencies involved
Stephanie - In Flemingsburg, KY. in the triangle of Cincinnati, OH, Lexington, Ky, and WV.
Cole - Stenzel, what is meant in the social dev. video bu instructional goal and by social dev. goal is the instructional the goal of the academic lesson by which I demonstrate the social dev skills?
ed - if there are agencies like soc services, foster care involved. but it is a purposeful yet straightforward process
rebecca - i went to school for an "Appal Semester" in Barbourville, KY. I can't remember the college name, maybe Union College?
Teri - ed, where do you live
ed - md
Stenzel - Is there a site I can go to to look at these types of plans
ed - where are you teri
rebecca - I live in MD Ed- Thurmont. How about you?
Stenzel - Yes, Cole
Stephanie - Barbourville is about 4 hours from me...
Teri - i am in alaska and it sounds like our programs are similar
Stenzel - Oh cool - (pun??) where in Alaska
ed - i live in greenbelt near dc
Teri - eagle river, about 15 miles north of ancorage
rebecca - Sorry to be sidetracking on geography here guys! One more comment...I hope to take a cruise your way someday teri!
ed - teri they call maryland the alaska of the south right about now
Stenzel - I already took a cruise there- and loved it
rebecca - did you ahve school this week ed?
Stenzel - How do you survive the darkness
Teri - there is no snow here. they moved the iditarod up to fairbanks where they have snow
rebecca - I hear it is beautiful stenzel. But expensive...was it worth it?
Stenzel - Very much worth it!!!!
ed - no, unless you call this stuff "school"
Teri - i survive knowing that after dec 21 we start gaining light again!!
Teri - ed, what did you do your entry 1 on?
ldf - Stenzel you are in the midwest somewhere?
Stenzel - yes, Illinois
ldf - what part...that is homebase for me
ed - i havent done yet but i'll probably do something with gross motor. i am a gm specialist
Stenzel - Now- Where were we???
Stenzel - Mount Prospect
ed - what did you do teri?
ldf - Can I get feedback on Entry 1...I am just getting things organized; for this entry I asked about if a student would learn better if they knew which of their intelligence were stronger; did an assessment with a multiple intellingence survey..any thoughts
brenda h - What di every one in the room do for Entry 1? This one is the hardest, I think.
Teri - I teach prek 3-5 in an inclusion class in an elementary school
ldf - Mount Prospect; I use to be just down the road in Niles
Stephanie - Do you think I can do one accomplishment titled COMMUNICATION, and then have several different types of communication I do with teachers, parents, and the community documented? It is like several "mini-accomplishments" What do you all think?
Stenzel - Now, what type of instruction will occur with this data ldf
ed - teri i meant what did you do for entry 1
Stenzel - We're neighbors :0
rebecca - that's along the lines of what I did for learner steph
brenda h - I think Entry 1 is more than just one assessment/am I correct? Is it assess/then instruct/then do it again?
Teri - sorry, i am working on it now, i am doing oral sensory interventions with a kiddo that has autism
ed - that's cool
ldf - I would use the information collected for the student to utlize those stregth in classes as well as collaborate with their academic teacher (I'm a HS resource teacher grades 9-12)
Stenzel - I used more than one assessment to address my question
Stephanie - I am a teacher or the visually impaired, so for 1, I did a functional vision evaluation, trying to find out where my student is having the most trouble with his vision, and that will lead me to help him through instruction and modifications/adaptations.
ldf - meaning what,stenzel?
Stenzel - Sounds like a plan Stephanie
Stenzel - I asked a question first and used assessments concerning (decoding) fluency rates etc. to come up with a plan for instruction
ldf - Stephanie, are using communication accompl. for ENtry 4 ? IF so are which category?
Cole - I am a grade 7 resource and I was wondering about doing an reading skill strand for entry 1 is that too narror or boring
rebecca - ldf- i havne't really begun that yet. but it seems like your question may be rather broad in terms of linking to instruction within the confines of the paper???
Stenzel - ldf - that sounds like communication to who (parents, community, colleagues, students
rebecca - cole- a lot of people comment that more specific, the better...
Stephanie - The way I have it right now, the communication accomplishment hits all 3 categories. I have supporting documentation for all 3 categories also...
ldf - my question in formulating the assessment was based on achievement tests and progress in current and past classes.
brenda h - cole, I don't think a reading skill strand is too boring. We have to teach skills, and they aren't always exciting, but that's part of teaching.
Stenzel - By narrowing the question down to a specific skill to be taught- is how I went about it
Jo - Cole how did you phrase your question?
ldf - SOund like a good idea than Stephanie...I went to a workshop with a past assessor for Entry 4, her remark about going cross category was to be careful
Cole - do you use psych/lang/academic tests to help set up for the question 1 entry
Stenzel - If it pertains to your question - what do ya think
brenda h - Speaking of assessors - will they be sp.ed. teachers who understand where we come from? Our classrooms?
Stenzel - Yes- we are scored by fellow sped teachers
ldf - Ideally, I have a student that I feel learns better auditorially and I am hoping that that will show up...which then Ican use the info. with acadmeic teacher to reinforce the auditory component in the daily academics
rebecca - stenzel, if i just use informal assessments for entry 1 skill: behavior) do you think that will be ok?
Stenzel - Sounds good
brenda h - So, for Entry 1, it's better to be specific? A specific skill?
Stephanie - ldf: examples I used are braille presentations I did for community, phone calls/letters to parents, and collaboration with teachers. Is that to broad? Do you think I need to separate them into different ones, or is it ok to lump them together? Anyone else have an idea?
Stenzel - I used informal tests- but make sure it address your question
ldf - Do not count on that Brenda H. from what I have learned it could be anyone..so any abbreviation need to be spelled out like IEP
brenda h - OH! I didn't do that. I think they SHOULD be sp.ed. teachers!
Stenzel - Using acronyms must be defined in the paper- common courtesy
rebecca - i am going to be specific. It will help me write a more focused and clear explanation. (yeah right)
brenda h - Even IEP? That's most basic for sp.ed
Stenzel - rebecca- you got the lingo
ldf - I do not think what we think they take in consideration, does that make sense Brenda
brenda h - Yes, I do understand, ldf
Stenzel - In the intro paragraph explain the acronym
brenda h - Stenzel, what kind of informal tests? And was it all informal tests?
ldf - Stephanie, you could break those into the two grouping...double check with maybe a current NBCT; I would utilize it probably in each area.
Stenzel - I referred to psychological on processing and used informal test that I use to narrow down the specific skill to be remediated. ex. phonetic survey
ldf - absolutely, stenzel, once you define the acronym...you are fine
ldf - Has anyone worked on ENtry 3: Social Skills
brenda h - ok, I understnad, Stenzel, thanks!
Stenzel - Did well on that one
Cole - I thought entry 4 was one where it was good to show overlap
brenda h - I finished my video this week and am typing on that this weekend. -Entry 3
Cole - Yes I am struggling through it as we speak
Stephanie - 3 has been my least favorite...I am towards the end though.
rebecca - which one did you find the hardest to complete stenzel?
Stenzel - Entry 4 - I retpyed 5 times
ldf - I am having difficulty identify the social skill
rebecca - steph you are pretty far along, aren't you? which did you find most difficult so far?
Cole - Are you having trouble explaining the video analysis . I feel I am all over the board looking an writing it
rebecca - did you do the video yet ldf?
Stenzel - Think about a specific social skill that you want students to learn - keep it simple
Stephanie - I used conversation starters for a totally blind 8th grader who does not socialize with her peers very much.
ldf - In this district they have character education; so I tried today to discuss some of their characters words and apply it to a problem that the community is facing
Stenzel - Sounds good
Stenzel - ldf - keep it simple ( narrowed down)
rebecca - stenzel. did you ever feel your write ups were too simplistic?
Stephanie - I found 3 to be the one I put off for last, but now I am rethinking 4, so I really don't know at this point...
brenda h - I think the video analysis takes time. I am going minute by minute writing down what's happening in the video and then writing from that.
Stenzel - I had a great mentor who made my papers bleed - I am a very blunt speaker and writer. Having a mentor helped
rebecca - skillstreaming is an excellent resource ldf
Stenzel - Brenda - yes that is how I did it - it took 2 hours to be thorough for a 15 min tape
ldf - These students have been growing up with these words, so now I am hoping to having the apply them to a life situation, my focus is a student who is graduating and needs to become more informed on what is going on around him
Stenzel - What specifically is going on around him - friends, family, a problem, worK???
Cole - I have looked at my video many times-without sound helps too
brenda h - Stenzel, did you certify in Nov. or are you a banker?
rebecca - what is the social skill you are targeting ldf?
Stenzel - I'm a banker - need 2 points
ldf - responsible citizen of the community
rebecca - what are you doing for 2 pointsd stenzel?
brenda h - 2 points!!What are you doing over?
Stenzel - ldf how does he be responsible in the communitry
ldf - oh my gosh...2 points!!!?
Stenzel - I did not complete one of the AC center questions - I will repeat that question
ldf - understanding what role he plays, his money, voting, etc.
brenda h - So you aren't doing an entry over?
rebecca - in the bag then stenzel- good for you!
Cole - 2 points and with a mentor -I am going down fast
Stenzel - No- my entries were strong
Stenzel - I cried for days
ldf - Congratulations!!! Can not blame you
brenda h - Well, I'll bet you were sick when you got the score! That's great that you had strong entries. Were the assessments horrible?
Stenzel - ldf - be more specific in the social skill
Cole - Was the assestment piece very detailed in what they wanted
rebecca - i bet you did- so close! but hey- you'll achieve it in the end. Some of us won't get that close!
brenda h - yes, I think I agree with Stenzel, ldf. Be more specific.
ldf - meaning, how will he demonstrate being a responsbile citizen?
Stenzel - Well - just think I have one 30 minute question to answer OHHH that's $10.00 a min. -- Oh I'm not nervous
brenda h - After reading this now I think I'm going to change my Entry 1 from Ancient Egypt to a specific math skill - time. I think it will be easier to explain and be concise on.
rebecca - i have to agree with stenzel ldf. It seems difficult to pinpoint an observable skill/behavior from what you are saying...so it may be hard for the student to learn/demonstrate it?
Cole - I like how you approach those questions!
Stephanie - How long is the actual AC test. I am scheduled to take mine at 10:30, what time will I be complete. How many prompts are on the test?
Stenzel - 6 prompts - 30 minutes per question
Stephanie - Thanks. I was suppose to take mine on Feb. 18, but we had a bad ice storm and the testing center has been closed all week, so I will have to reschedule. (After my portfolio is mailed!)
rebecca - stenzel. do we have to have a basic social studies knoweledge fo rthe assessment? any tips for studying/preparing?
Cole - I did a social ques. about student interacting and self concept-is it too broad or un measureable in a video?
ldf - Sorry, not to dwell on this..we are facing a financial emergency in our districts..it is pretty ugly. This student is asking what he can do as a voting adult in the work world; how does cutting programs and teachers affect him (lots of programs and lots of teachers)
rebecca - how are you teaching your student in that area cole?
brenda h - fCole, mine is similar. My video focused on my student working on a project with a small group
Stenzel - Yes, I looked at our teaching standards and best teaching practices books in our professional library at school. I would certainly be familiar with what is expected in your certificate area
ldf - are you then measuring their interaction with the other students
Cole - I did a science lesson-review and had teams conpeteing -group dynamics of 13 year old-
jdee - stenzel: I teach LD -junior and senior high school students. Will I have questions that relate to other age groups on the AC?
Stenzel - Some of the questions are path specific - and you will know this
brenda h - I think the video is just one activity or lesson within the whole social skills program you have developed. It doesn't have to cover everything.
Stenzel - I did have other age ranges - because cert is age 5-21 -
rebecca - so cole...what did you do to facilitate social skills?
Stenzel - goodnite everyone : O
ldf - See the one thing I have learned is that I cover lots of individual issues as they arise,, so doing a video on social skills to me is challenging b/c I do alot daily but not formally as this Entry sounds
rebecca - good nite stenzel...thanks
ldf - bye stenzel like to know where in Prospect
Cole - I showed interaction of students to get answers
Cole - bye all and thanks
rebecca - just one perspective ldf....you just need to be able to meet the rubric standards in your write ups. Use those as your guide.
ldf - thank...I think I will look that over again;
rebecca - well good night all! Lots of luck!
ldf - good night...I am off also to read rubrics
Cole - rebecca can i ask you more in the chat room
