Bev - Anybody there?
wz - Hi, Bev. Guess we're the early birds.
Bev - I guess so, how is it going?
wz - Slowly and frustrating. Finished #4, #3 almost finished, part way #2, haven't started #1. How about you?
Bev - I finished video taping for entry 2 on Tuesday, just a relief that part is done
wz - Yes, I went through several tapings before getting mine. That is a good accomplishment to finish that.
Bev - Have reflection for 4 left to do, have everything put together for 1 need to do the write up, both videos finished and almost have entry 3 complete
Bev - All I keep thinking time is getting short
wz - How well I know that! Some days I get so panicy I can hardly breathe.
wz - I'm going to get #1 mapped out this week. What is your question?
Bev - My husband just told me as soon as I send the box we are going to a hotel for a long weekend and do nothing but relax
wz - Hi, Patti.
Bev - Something to look forward to
Bev - Hello Patti
patti - Hi !I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one panicing
wz - Interesting you should have those plans. Bill and I already have reservations at an area resort for the weekend after mail date (April 9). Yes, that'll be nice. Then start studying for the summer.
wz - welcome, ll
patti - I think I finished taping Thursday. the tape is only 12 minutes long, but I think I got what I needed
Bev - My question for #1- Are there environmental factors that negatively impact Tim's ability to focus and perform?
wz - environmental factors? home?
Bev - In the classroom
patti - Hi, Jan
Jan in Va. - hello
patti - Jan, how are you coming along?
wz - Bev, interesting. I've not seen that area investigated.
wz - Hi, Jan and patti.
Jan in Va. - hey, i can't get in
wz - Jan, we can see your entries. I think you are in.
wz - patti, from what I've read on this site, 12 minutes will be fine. It's covering the standards in video and writing. which entry?
patti - entry 3-social. I had my preschoolers make a peanut butter jelly sandwich with a partner
jAN - I guess I,m doing alright, have 3 almost done, but having a devil of a time getting a good social entry
jAN - what about evrybody else
wz - interesting you incorporated food for #3, patti. I used a big cookie for #3 on sharing and equity
jAN - i've said it before i don't usually do formal lessons like that, so when i try it seems contrived and the kids feel it too
patti - I had planned several weeks of lessons on cooperation/sharing etc. and this was just an extension of those lessons. It turned out great!
wz - I can't get a handle on #1. I "think" I understand the entry. I just can't quiet get to a particular question with a particular student. I'll feel much better about all this when I get that sorted out.
jAN - had to buy a new computer, laptop went doen, 3 weeks for repair and all this work to do, boy this has been an expensive proposition for me
jAN - i'm going to try a social awareness game next week
wz - you've already spent your NCT raise
jAN - the other 3 entries are in the rework stages, so i'm not as panicked about them
jAN - NCT raise?
patti - wz, do you have a focus student?
jAN - our district is suppose to give us a generous bonus, reimburse us 1,000 of app fee and give us a supplement for at least 5 years-that is if i make it
wz - In GA we get a 10% raise after being certified - it's 15% in NC - FL is 10%, I think - I thought all states had the raise
jAN - no, virginia was suppose to give a 2,500 supplement then it was cut to 853, our new governor is trying to reinstate, but...
wz - patti, yes, I have my student. One with whom I worked extremely closely with family for 3 years. Poor social skills, poor academic skills but doesn't have a clue about his part of it. Doesn't see cause and effect. All ques I develop just seem too broad and too philosophical.
jAN - our district tells us they will stand by their promise, i hope so, at least pay fror the fees
jAN - wz, can you pick one skill and focus on it?
wz - From what I've heard on this site, NC has the sweetest deals - pay, support, days off to work, etc.
jAN - i started very broad, but narrowed down quite a bit
patti - wz, is there any one thing that really stands out with this kid as far as needs?
Anita - Hi guys! I know yo u will think I am crazy but I just logged on and am readin your conversation I assume you are talking becoming Nationally certified right?
wz - One attempt was "What startegies will help Sean modify his perception of his social environment? Corny and not easily assessed.
jAN - right
jAN - can you focus on a behavior you would like to see him use
wz - Yes, we're in the final throes of endless writing and little sleep
patti - sounds like you're leaning more towards social skills than academics?
wz - welcome Jan
Anita - where can someone find out what is required? Is it on a website somewhere?
Deb - Hi everyone!
jAN - do you mean to apply or the portfolio
jAN - hi deb
patti - Hi Deb
jAN - there is a a NBPCT site you can go to
Anita - i guess really i'm not sure. i would just like to find our more.
jAN - type it in as a key word
wz - His problems tend to be more social. Yes, I think I am. Jan, yes, what I want him to do. Good thought angle. That may be my avenue to realizing the ? GREAT suggestion. I'll definitely think on this from that view.
jAN - i will tell you it is a lot of hard work and the more you know in advance the better off you will be
Anita - Thanks Jan! How far are you to being complete?
Deb - It is a big family committment too.
patti - I dont' know about the rest of you, but I took that withdrawel form out twice. My husband made me put it back!
jAN - i would say about 60% not counting the assessment center
Anita - gosh i'm not sure this is worth my time.... i', about crazy just keeping up with regular EC junk
jAN - yes, my husband had the opportunity to go out of state and I said Go
wz - Total family support plus lots of time is essential. Plan to do NBC on a year with no major committments (weddings, graduations, etc). Get involved early with others who are going thru process and who have been successful.
jAN - couldn't have come at a better time, I shave very little free time
Anita - What kind of setting do you guys work in?
jAN - good suggestion wz, i have said no to so many outside committments and even extra responsibilities on the job
Deb - I think it was one of the best professional experiences I have been through! (even though I thought I was losing my mind at times.)
jAN - i'm LD resource/collaborative, you?
jAN - are you certified Deb
Deb - Yes
Anita - i'm elementary resource k-5
jAN - where did everyone go
patti - Deb, did you certify the first time around?
Deb - I'm also elementary resource/self-contained
Deb - Yes
wz - Congratulations, Deb! Hats off. Nobody in the entire world will ever understand what your certification means except those of us who have shared the experience and your family who lived it with you! Well done! Hope to be there, too, soon.
Anita - what state do you teach in?
doug - hi everyone.
doug - hi everyone
Deb - Thanks!!
Deb - Hi Doug!
Deb - I'm in Upstate NY
wz - I teach small alternative school 6-12 EBD students.
doug - I teach in MI categorical contained emr
Anita - I'm in NC and the paperwork is driving me nuts
patti - Doug, how are you doing in this process?
doug - what do you all mean by certification
jAN - you all are at the bottom of my screen, does anyone know how to get you back up
Deb - wz- I'm sure you'll get there soon... just force yourself to keep focused.
doug - I have taught for 11 years now resource / categorical
jAN - I'm in Va.
Deb - National Board Certification
doug - National Boards are required?
Deb - How far is everyone in the process?
jAN - what did everyone else do for social
doug - That requirement isn't in MI (yet) shhh
wz - I am a hard driven self starter who has never avoided work or a committment in my life. I, too, have taken out that withdrawal form several times. Always great support to put it away. Being this close to the end, I've gotten a second wind. Just physically tired, as are ya'll. Won't quit now!
jAN - i've got 4, 1 and 2 mostly finished, need fine tuning, 2 is giving me a time
patti - Deb, I am way behind. #2 almost done (this week) #4 partially done, #1 I have all the info and am ready to write, same with #3. I don't know if I'll make it.....
Deb - jan, your in great shape!!
jAN - its not required doug, believe it or not we chose this
doug - How do you go about certification? where do i get more info on it?
jAN - ddeb where are you from
doug - What is the advantage of getting the cert?
jAN - i don't know deb, time is a ticking
wz - Yes, you will. If you have videos and question, just find the writing time. You're on the downhill side with those done.
jAN - go to NBPTC site
patti - wz, last weekend was the worst! I was ready to throw in the towel. but this week I really buckled down and I feel much better.
doug - are these the boards for all educators?
jAN - yep that video is killing me, i'll think i have a great lesson and pfzzt
Deb - patti, that's about where I was this time last year. I procrastinated making the decision to actually apply. Didn't get my box until Nov. It took a while to read (and process)everything. It can be done!!
jAN - yess, but we are all exceptional needs
patti - I'm taking 8 days off in mid-March plus spring break is coming.
Deb - jan, I'm from upstate NY
doug - I'll fininish my masters, that gives me enough fits for now.
jAN - i'm actually thinking of taking this weekend off from working on it, first time since november
patti - Deb, thanks for the thoughts. I too am a great procrastinator and now I am dearly paying for it!!
wz - Are the kids the problem with the video? Bribe them. It worked for mine. Before turning on the camera, I gave them a pep talk about my expectations, that I was the one being graded, for them to forget the camera and just have a regular class. After several flops, this worked.
doug - Thanks for the ino. GOOD LUCK everyone. You'll do it!
jAN - have a conference tomorrow, bills to pay and the house is a disaster area, plus i've got to figure out the ends and outs of this new computer.
Deb - Mini deadlines helped me through it. Whenever I got frustrated, I task analyzed further so that I always had some little item I could check off.
patti - Doug, this feels like getting your masters in 9 months. Or having a baby.
jAN - no wiz, it's just i usually don't have many social issues and i handle them as they come up, don't teach formal lessons
Deb - Patti, I actually have a friend who calls this "laboring the process"
Anita - thanks.... Good luck everyone!
doug - I've never had a baby but we are going through that for the fourth time...doesn't sound like fun...WHAT is the advantage of haveing NAtional Cert?
patti - ya, well this must be hard labor
jAN - seems so contrived for me and i think the kids sense it, they are great kids
jAN - deb we'll let you answer that one
Deb - Incredible professional dev. experience - teaches you how to be reflective and truly analyze your teaching (How's that?)
wz - my humble interpretation is #3 doesn't have to be a lesson on social development. Incorporate social dev in a regular lesson. Using group projects is definitely developing social skills! What do you do regular when you handle as issues come up?
doug - Deb-I am always looking for those things...how much does this cost besides the obvious TIME, energy?
jAN - i'm thinking of doing a game next week, it is a social awareness game, but don't know how much teaching i would be doing
patti - Jan, how old are your kids?
jAN - 1-5th grade, the group i want to focus on is fifth
doug - gotta run, have to post my assignment for class that's due tomorrow. Good Luck everyone. bye
Deb - Last time I checked, it was $2300 to apply for the first time. This can be considered a 3 year process. You can bank your scores if you don't "achieve" the first time. It is $300 an entry for anything you have to retake. Many states have financial assistance for candidates.
jAN - i have one young lady, comes from a hx of abuse and negklect, her social skil;ls are poor
jAN - she already works with our ed teacher and has outside counseling
jAN - but i thought if we could play a social awareness game with the other four, it might work
patti - can you use peers to help her with this game somehow?
wz - the game sounds good. do you use group activities? why? think what you already do to help her develop social skills and why. as "accomplished teachers" we do a lot of this naturally and daily. the new part is writing about it.
patti - maybe teach the whole group, but with her specifically in mind?
jAN - the other thing i was considering is we met for lunch and her manners were awful, maybe a lesson on table manners?
Deb - Gotta go. Best of luck all. Remember, you are in the "thick" of it now. Hang in there!! Your students are benefitting from this experience.
patti - Thanks, Deb for the encouragement and cheerleading!
Ukelelady - Hi, is it music time?
wz - Thanks, Deb. welcome Debbie
jAN - most of my group activities are remedial, i spend the rest of the time in collaborative settings, but don't have releases for all the students
Joy - Is this still ENS, or have we switched to music?
wz - What about a group activity on table manners. Food is always popular.
jAN - we've been doing a study strategies group, i mentioned that last week, but the certified teacher who was here said it didn't sound like a good social lesson
wz - Welcome, Joy. No, this is ENS.
patti - Has she seen The Princess Diaries? That might be a good point to take off on manners
patti - just a thought
Ukelelady - Where is music?
jAN - that is my back up plan wz, thought we could do a discussion, then set up like a fancy restraunt, tablecloth etc.
jAN - probably not, she has been in 15 foster homes, food is a real issue, because she was denied it as punishmenyt
Debbie - hello all
jAN - she eats with her fingers and licks the bottom of serving containers clean
jAN - hi debbie, how are you this evening
wz - remember, it's not how well the students do; it's how well we teach and meet the standards. focus on us, not our babies
Debbie - fine thanks
wz - what's your progress, Debbi?
jAN - i'll keep working on it, part of the problem is i only have her in group once a week
Debbie - i have 2 and 3 to do
jAN - your right wz
jAN - i am so proud of my others though, they include her and are never ugly
jAN - do you have any videos yet debbie
patti - how does she interact with them in group?
wz - while study strategies alone won't meet #3, using that class as a vehicle might. How do you facilitate social dev within those group sessions? One of my videos used a group activity on math. Math was the vehicle. I just liked another video/lesson better.
jAN - immature silly
Debbie - yes..taped just deciding what to do
wz - Welcome, Vicki
patti - What are her interests?
jAN - well enough about that, i'll keep working on it, i got my literacy lesson easily
wz - I'm still facing #1, Debbie. What was your ? and documents?
wz - welcome, Jerri
jAN - she loves to read, computers, doodling
Jerri - wz, where is the EMC Music Chat?
Debbie - stratgies for leraning letters and testing data
wz - Jerri, I have no idea.
jAN - your the 2nd one looking for music tonite jerri
Joy - Okay, how does this work? Isn't this supposed to be music at 10?
Margie - That's what I thought
kathyc - I thought music was tonight at 10 too.
Jerri - We thought we were going to have a meeting room here at 10 Eastern
jAN - maybe hit change rooms jerri
wz - I think academic might be easier, but I deal so much with beh modification social seems more natural.
Jerri - I was Ukelelady before!
jAN - let's trade wz
jAN - did you have any problems with 2 or 3 wz
Jerri - So, is anyone else logging on now for music?
Margie - Yes
wz - Just answering all those redundant, confusing questions. First videos horrible. then, got 2 good videos each.
Joy - yes
jAN - re still ens, nbptc
kathyc - I'm for music too.
vicki - is there any way to view the chat other than this 1" small window?
Jerri - I tried to change rooms, but maybe I'm still too green
patti - good nite, NBC ladies. My daughter's basketball game is tonight (west coast). Happy writing!
wz - Hi, ya, music people! There seems to be a mix up. All year national cert for exceptional needs has 9:00-10:30 Fridays.
Margie - Vicki...try maximizing your window
kathyc - We were told we had 10-11 on Fridays for March
jAN - there is a meeting room 1 try there
Jerri - Sorry, we thought we could start at 10:00. That's what the sign on the door says
wz - Sounds like we're all educators. Flexibility is our forte! No problem.
jAN - just checked the other room and there was a group there
jAN - try changing rooms
wz - I'm getting too confused. Jan, sounds like we can help each other. wzvanug@mindspring.com if you want. Good luck and good night.
Jerri - We could all talk about entry 4! ~!!
jAN - so wz, back to your videos how did they go
Jerri - Hi wizzle
wizzlewolf - Hi all, I was just passing through and saw the confusion
wz - okay, videos great. #3 was FUN! My camera operator is heard laughing several times. most who've watched it laughed. hope that's a good sign.
wizzlewolf - The music people are right. This is time for NB Music chat. Ex Needs is from 9-10 Music 10->
Joy - All right! wizzle to the rescue!
Debbie - hi wizzlewolf thanks for the great website
wz - Go wizzle! Good luck to ALL and EVERY area. ENS, see ya'll next week.
wizzlewolf - Ex Needs has been meeting at 9 on Fridays. However, Kathleen added a 10 E Music Chat. If you don't believe it, look at the chat room calendar
wizzlewolf - I don't mean to "butt" in. However, I have used this room for a long time and I could let the Music people be so confused.
kathyc - So, folks, where are we in the process? I've finished rewrite # ?? on my entry 2 video. Am ready to put it to bed for a while.
Jerri - I have to get used to the chat scrolling the wrong way
Margie - I'm curious how far everyone has gotten on their entries
viv - How do you show musicianship for entry #3?
kathyc - Me too Jerri. It took a while to figure out how to read.
that is really cutto - ok are you music or ens
wizzlewolf - So Music candidates TALK ON!!! I have to go surfing now. Enjoy! Bye!
Margie - I taped a rehearsal of my intermediate chorus
Jerri - Good question, I'd like to know about musicianship too
vicki - i'm using my chorus for entry 3
kathyc - Are we all elementary?
Jerri - Thanks wizzle
Jerri - EMC here
Joy - i'm elementary ...
viv - I am elementary. My chorus meets before school. It is not one of my regular classes.
vicki - yes
Margie - I chose my chorus for entry 3 because it is a prime place to demonstrate musicianship
vicki - my chorus meets before school, too.
kathyc - Me too. viv, but mine is one day a week after school, so I'm using a 4th grade class for entry 3.
Margie - Is your chorus part of your program??
viv - I don't feel conducting is my best talent.
Joy - i taped a behavior dis. class ... maybe that's not a good idea - maybe it won't show enough musicianship??
kathyc - I think chorus is a good avenue for some, not just conducting. Vocal musicianship could definately be included. I just chose to do a class.
Jerri - How do you feel it went, Joy?
Joy - i was pleased ... haven't started writing yet, but did jot down answers to Q and felt like it would work
vicki - we're showing musicianship through music reading, analyzing the differences in phrases, ,singing with good phrasing, etc.
viv - My chorus meets twice a week. They give concerts throughout the year. So I guess you could say it is part of the program. But I really wanted to use a class. Any other ideas?
vicki - what about a recorder group or improvisation lesson?
Jerri - That is what's important, Joy. Anyone can display musicianship
viv - I keep remembering the words singing, conducting or playing on page 4 of entry 3.
vicki - if you have your kids do something musically correctly, that's musicianshop
kathyc - I think either of those would be good Vicki. Just choose a skill that maybe goes a little above getting the notes out.
Joy - we were singing & playing recorders
vicki - then you can show your own and their musicianshop
viv - For level 4 rubric, the teacher is to model expecrt musicianship through singing, playing or conducting within the context of the lesson.
vicki - you are the model. if you demonstrate good musicianship, they will copy you.
viv - I am using the recorder for my entry 1
vicki - yes, i have several exercises to work on these things, and an evaluation for them to do at the end of the rehearsal.
kathyc - Recorder fits well with entry 1, I think
Joy - i used 3rd graders on entry #1, singing 3 part rounds
vicki - i am doing sixteenth notes for entry one. we are speaking, singing, playing, listeningto and analyzing, reading , writing, improvising , and composing. so you think that's okay?
kathyc - Sounds good, Vicki. How long is the unit?
viv - I think the idea is good. Would that also show musicianship?
vicki - it's about 8 lessons, i think. sometimes one lesson plan is too musch for the time period, so it seems to keep stretching.
vicki - yes, because they are having to demonstrate so many skills.
kathyc - I've found that too, Vicki. My will probably be about 8 weeks too.
vicki - i still haven't decided on entry 2.
kathyc - I had mine start by choosing a 4 beat ostinato to perform. They will stretch that 4 beat to 16 eventually, add pitch, play it and notate it.
kathyc - That's for entry 2.
vicki - i did something like that to start the unit.
kathyc - No, entry 1\
vicki - what is your unit
kathyc - I have somewhat finished entry 2. I did pitch - intro to solfege.
Jerri - What age level, kathy?
kathyc - I chose a lesson I've taught several times, so I felt comfortable with it. First grade
viv - I wrote a grant for the walk on keyboard from Suzuki. I was going to use that and experiment with harmony and melody, intervals, and scales. Would this work for entry2?
vicki - i was thinking about doing with melody with second grade, like a mrd song or improvisation with 4th
Jerri - Takes a long time to post an update in here
vicki - viv, i like your ideat, too.
kathyc - the hard part about entry 2 is getting everything you want in 15 minutes.
viv - For entry 3 do they want me to show my musicianship in singing, playing, or conducting or the students.
Jerri - I'm working on a keyboard lesson with kindergarten for #2. I have a yamaha MIE lab
vicki - i don't think there is any way to do a whole lesson in 15 minutes. i just need to plan so i get the questions they ask for in that time
Jerri - But I'm having trouble with the camera getting faces
kathyc - Viv, you show yours to demonstrate something and then wshow the kids working toward that end too. At least that's how I see #3.
vicki - viv, i think you can show any or all 3
vicki - i agree with kathy
vicki - how far is your camera from the kids
viv - For entry 3 could the students write a song with certain parameters?
kathyc - Jerri, I had my first graders sit on the floor, me right in front of them. They sat in a somewhat warped U shape with some directly facing the camera and some shown from the sides. It looked pretty good.
kathyc - The camera was about 15 feet away, but zoomed in to have them fill the frame, for the most part. She also zoomed in on their faces and movements.
viv - I put my camera to the side of the kids but yet in front. My camera person zoomed in on a few.
Jerri - I wanted the kids at the keyboards, but then their faces are all looking down. getting the camera in their faces is pretty intrusive
kathyc - Jerri, could you sit it on a tripod and zoom?
Jerri - I think I'm going to have someone walk around with the camera. I tried the tripod and got the tops of their heads
viv - Thanks for the advice. Got to run.
vicki - how are ya'll doing on 4
Jerri - My 4 is plodding along
kathyc - I had a friend use a keyboard lesson and she did both - stationary, camera moving and some zooming. It was good.
kathyc - I've written up most of my accomplishements for #4, but not my communication section or the reflection.
Jerri - I'll try that. It will have to work if I want to use that lesson
vicki - i gave my rough draft to a teacher who got her certification this year. i'll talk to her next week. i hope i am mostly on track.
kathyc - Who do y'all have readaing your entry #1-3, music people or board certified people?
Jerri - How are you going to do the communication section, kathy
vicki - nobody yet, i'm not there , but i wll probably have both
vicki - i grouped my accomplishments into sections, according to the rubric on page 5
kathyc - For my reading of entry #2 (the only one I've somewhat finished) I had the art teacher at my school, the music teacher at another school and a board certfied teacher read.
vicki - those are good choices
kathyc - For the communication section, I want to use 1-2 pages of the log, then also include a variety of my other communication - notes from parents, comment sheets from grade sheets, progress reports, and newsletters. To show variety.
vicki - on entry 1, what are your thoughts about this: referring to the 1st video segment, what are the qualities of the student's individual performances, particiaption or skils that directly impacted your planning?
Jerri - I'm going to have to send mine out to have it read by an NBC
kathyc - For entry 1 question, I would think that means addressing their weaknesses or maybe strengths, maybe extra practice on something, grouping differently.
Jerri - vicki, did you plan anything in yourl remaining lessons because of what you saw on the video
kathyc - Jerri, If you can get another music person to read, do that too. I found her comments very helpful.
vicki - i had already planned for more practice
Jerri - I'll probably try and get my husband to read. He's music.
kathyc - You know, most of those questions are things that we do all the time without thinking. Now we just have to think about it and document it.
vicki - those are good ideas, i wrote them down
Jerri - Yes, these are things we do without thinking about them. Now we have to write about them
vicki - have you thought much about the assessment center tests
Jerri - My husband promised to help me with history and theory
vicki - how are you going to study
Jerri - Read his doctoral class notes
kathyc - A friend of mine got one of those 48-disc sets on the history of music. Kinda music appreciation. I've been listening to them to and from school to review - after 25 years!
Jerri - Listen to public radio
Jerri - I've found some good stuff surfing internet, too
kathyc - Guess our time is about up. Will y'all log on to Sunday's?
vicki - is it jsut the music liek we had in college or talking
Jerri - What, vicki
vicki - i probably won't be here on sunday. htanks for your help tonight
kathyc - It's lecture and listening - analysis of the musical style.
Jerri - do a seach on world music
vicki - okay, thanks
vicki - doew it have a title
kathyc - See you next Friday, maybe or Sunday! Have a good weekend. We have carnival at school, so no time to type this weekend!
Jerri - I'll see if I can get into the yahoo site on Sunday!
vicki - that would be great
kathyc - Vicki, I'll try to find the title.
vicki - have a good weekend. bye
kathyc - See y'all later!!
Jerri - Bye
