Patricia - Hello
Gail - Hi Patricia
Gail - Where are you from?
Patricia - What is the topic of discussion this evening?
Gail - Professional REadings, I think
Patricia - North Carolina and you?
Gail - Me too, Lenoir. And you?
Patricia - What does that entail?
Patricia - Winston-Salem
Gail - I think we are suppose to gain some knowledge for Boards from readings????
Patricia - Ok
Gail - Have you read anything special?
Patricia - I guess there is no moderator
Gail - Sometimes they are a little late.
Patricia - I read all the time I think too much
Gail - Are you a candidate?
Patricia - I read mosslty professional journals, EC law and I.E.P's
Patricia - Typo mostly
Gail - How long have you been EC?
Patricia - about 15 years 20 total teaching regulaar ed as well
Gail - I'm impressed. 18 EC for me
Patricia - In what area
Gail - Resource, LD, BED, EMD
Patricia - I teach behaviorally,emotionally disabled children
Gail - I did that one year. Almost had a break down. Middle school
Gail - Have you completed any entries?
Patricia - For me I it is not the students who get to me.
Patricia - It is the powers that be in Compliance
Gail - Amen to that!!!
Gail - Hi Wiz
wizzlewolf - Hello Pat and Gail!
Gail - We were getting concerned that nobody cared!
Patricia - We have a new computer program for writin
Patricia - g IEPS
wizzlewolf - Nobody cared about what?
Gail - Is it called Infohandler?
Patricia - It contains numerous glitches
Gail - Nobody cared to discuss Boards tonight
Patricia - NO Citrix
wizzlewolf - Oh it is like this in September. Very slow. People are just getting started.
Gail - Wiz, tell us some good professional readings
Patricia - Slow WE are EC teachers IT IS NEVER SLOW
wizzlewolf - I hosted a NB chat last night on TappedIN and NOBODY came. That is not unusual at the beginning of the school year. In a month or two, things get crazy!
wizzlewolf - No I mean NB slow, not EC slow.
Patricia - We do the job of two teachers and don't even get the proper salary of one
wizzlewolf - Gail, it you are a candidate, you should be reading all the NB stuff right now. That is the MOST important to get you off on the right track. In fact, some people don't certify in the first year for the simple reason they didn't pay attention to the "NB words".
wizzlewolf - Hi gidget!
Patricia - I thought this was a general chat sorry!
Gail - I just finished entry 4 and used lots of the buzz words. Is that what I'm suppose to do?
Patricia - Good Night ALL!
wizzlewolf - Well, if buzz words are your thing, I guess it is ok. What is important is what you say with "buzz words".
Gail - I thought they went along with the standards pretty well. Am I being dumb?
wizzlewolf - Dumb about what? Why?
gidget - Where is everyone in the process? I have just turned in my application and am waiting for the materials to arrive.
Gail - I thought entry 4 was pretty easy to write?????
Gail - Gidget, I just got started.
wizzlewolf - Gail, it is all easy to write. You just have to say the right things.
Gail - I am having a had time with entry 1. What exactly do they mean by social development and how you show it?
gidget - What types of stuff did you all use for entry 4? For me it is hard to remember some of this stuff and I was hoping that it would stir some memory. I am trying to get together a notebook of information that I think may be helpful.
Gail - Progress charts, newsletters, Building Based Support Team, ADHD Interest Grp.??? Hope that is what they want!
wizzlewolf - Gail, are you on the EX. NEEDS listserv?
Gail - yes, and i get alot of great info
Gail - your website is a very sources of info, wiz
gidget - Is sending evidence of involving parents using surveys a good idea. I do not have much parental support and can't seem to get them to come to a meeting.
Gail - good source, i mean
wizzlewolf - The Ex. Needs listserv group is great especially to get lots of interpretation of meaning for entries like your question about social development.
gidget - Laurel, Mississippi Where are you?
Gail - I did do parent surveys but I couldn't relate them to student learning well enough
Gail - Lenoir, N.C.
wizzlewolf - Gidget, YES any thing you can get on parents is good. This is especially true for those of us who teach ex. needs and have NO parental response.
wizzlewolf - I am in Florida
wizzlewolf - Oh yes, Mississippi really got Isadore!
Gail - We had a lot of rain and wind but no real damage
gidget - What if you asked questions like what social behavioral questions or self-help types of skill related questions?
wizzlewolf - Gail, I can give you examples of social development
gidget - Yes we got about 7-8 inches of rain in about 36 hours
Gail - i'm listening
wizzlewolf - We just got rain, rain, and more rain.
gidget - Gail what do you teach
wizzlewolf - What kind of kids do you teach Gail?
Gail - Resource, K-5
wizzlewolf - Hi Anne! Are you a candidate?
gidget - We had winds ranging between 45-60 miles per hour
Gail - BED, LD, EMD
gidget - Cool me too Gail except mine are all DD
gidget - Hi Anne Welcome
naneb - Hi wizzle!!
gidget - Hi Naneb
Gail - I have 2 DDs and 2 OHI
wizzlewolf - Social development is how the kids respond and react in social situations. For example, how they relate to other students/teachers. Social maturity levels, relationship skills. You have to have a way to assess that development.
wizzlewolf - Hi NAN!!
Patricia - I am so glad your talking EC-My Language!!
Gail - What could you use to assess other than teacher observation
Patricia - I left before because you were talking NB
Patricia - A behavioral log
gidget - I have 10 DD that if truth be told were really MR< PH< LD< LI
naneb - a checklist of skills
Patricia - God Bless you Gidget!
naneb - I teach middle school LD
Patricia - Naneb....a saint are you!
wizzlewolf - Gail there are tons of material / assessment tools to assess every aspect of Ex Needs kids. Do a search online for social development assessment. You will find stuff there.
gidget - You could utilize your state's curricular checklist as a measure or the old Peabody, Brigance, maybe even a Vineland if you can show it is not being used as part of an ATR
naneb - Not a saint but close
Anne - Anne- Hi Everyone, I am new to the chat room and started gathering my material for Entry 4. Ihave a question about the evidence you provide as documentation. Is it necessary to remove your last name, school name, county, state etc.,from the documents when you send them in your portfolio?
Patricia - Oh back to NB
gidget - From what I have read so far --yes Anne
gidget - We are all at some point in the NB
Patricia - Again I will excuse myself thought this was EC Chat
wizzlewolf - Anne NO NO NO. On entry 4 you leave your name! That is the one entry were annonymity is an exception. They need to know who did what!
Gail - Does that mean take off city, state on verification forms??
gidget - Thank you for clearing that up! I think it will make more sense when I get my materials
naneb - No, you fill out the verification forms completely
Gail - what about on documentations
wizzlewolf - Gail, that isn't really feasible in many cases. If you want to you can if it does not jeopardize the verifiability of the evidence.
Anne - Thanks Gidget and Wizzlewolf. I knew we had to remove last names on other sections but was unsure about this one.
gidget - Is it true that if you have to retake a part of the process over, you must pay 300.00
naneb - for each section
gidget - Don't take me at my word ---I am newer at this than you
wizzlewolf - Also, don't worry if you mention first names in the other entries. First names are OK for entries 1-3
gidget - that's awful!!!! I pray I don't mess this up
wizzlewolf - Gidget, Yes. You have to pay for every part you take over .
gidget - I just want to pray for every part that I am about to consider. I hate being unsure of things. Sometimes the not knowing is worse than the process---or at least I hope so.
gidget - Is there a place to find a list of the NB certified folks in your area
naneb - go to the national board site and do a search
naneb - where are you at gidget
gidget - Physical location or in process?
Gail - do candidate numbers come in the box or should we make some.
naneb - physical location
Gail - stickers, i mean
gidget - my candidate # was on my app
gidget - Laurel, Ms.
naneb - i made stickers with clear return address labels
gidget - Where are you Nan?
Anne - you might also try the Professional Development Department in your local school district to see if there are National Board Certified people in your district. If there aren't any in your county, try a neighboring district.
Gail - I mean every page has to have a number
Gail - Has anybody been to any good workshops on boards
gidget - Anne I am all alone on this trek. No one has ventured into this territory in my area on this subject. Most of those certified are High School
gidget - I am hoping to go to one on Oct.14. Will let you know.
Gail - Gid, i'm the only EC teacher in my county to go for it
gidget - I think being the first with no one to mentor me is scary
Gail - it is, but i'm hoping to hook up with some others in different areas. I hear that's the thing to do!
gidget - I know I am good at what I do, but I am worried that I won't word things correctly or put the portfolio together in an impresive manner You know?
gidget - Wizzle where did you go
gidget - Wizzle where did you go
gidget - ?
Gail - I totally agree. But WE are all good at paperwork, right?
gidget - Sorry only meant to type that one time.
Anne - gidget, even though you don't have a local mentor, maybe you can find someone on the Exceptional Needs main page. I responded to someone who is just starting their NB process too. We are going to see if we can support each other online.
Gail - Gid, have you visited wizzlewolf's website
gidget - Yes but I am not trying to push myself when I write IEPS or meeting minutes or other
nan - Hi, it is naneb but I got booted and it wouldn't let me in
gidget - Yes and it is fab Gail
nan - gidget, I am on the coast of MS
nan - you need to join the yahoo group
gidget - where did whizzlewolf go?
nan - i was the one and only teacher at my school to try NB
gidget - Maybe we can exchange phone numbers or emails and work together on it ?
Gail - Wiz usually signs off at 10
nan - I am certified
Gail - congratulations!!!
nan - thanks, last year!!
debbie - congrats....
Gail - has it changed your life?
nan - changed me as a teacher that's for sure
gidget - Fabulous
Gail - i hear it opens all kinds of doors
