Michelle in SC - How are you doing with National Boards? Is this your first year? Are you a banker? or have you seen the end of the tunnel?
Stenzel - I'm a banker for nbc
Stenzel - I need only 2 points - I'm taking the transition plan question over
Michelle in SC - This is ny first go. I may be joining you. I don't have a lot of encouragement on my end? Only two points, I guess you were upset about that, but being so close it's great too!
Stenzel - I've been gathering all kinds of data information - I had a student teacher and she gave me current info- I hope this helps
Michelle in SC - That should be a big help. I wouldn't know what to improve to just make two points?
Stenzel - I was devastated by only losing by 2 and I knew what happened- I did not complete one of the ac questions - didn't realize how many windows needed to answer the questions
Michelle in SC - Best of luck! when can you take it again?
Stenzel - I went to a meeting with mentors from our state IL and they pretty much said just do one question
Stenzel - I guess the window in from January to end of June. I think that's what they said- I don't have it written down
Lela - Hi! Can anyone give me tips on what the question document should be like for entry one?
Stenzel - Find a student that you want to showcase and what area of academics or such and use assessments to discover what questions you need to answer.
Michelle in SC - I wish I only had one question to do! i can't seem to get a tape to use or make a final decision on which students to use?Having an idea about the question doc. would help me too.
Stenzel - By answer is - make a plan to implement to help this student
Stenzel - My question for my student was how to improve decoding ability so to increase fluency
Lela - My instructions state that I must formulate a question. I must use this question to initiate my assessments. It is called the "Question Document". some ladies are just typing a question on a page. I think that their must be more to it than that.
Lela - Sorry about the typing, I haven't had my glass of sherry yet!
Stenzel - Illinois
Stenzel - I'm drinking my merlot right now - what a day with the kids - higher than kites
Lela - My kids and I made homemade soap yesterday. My Principal is going to let us sell it to raise money for a Leap Frog Learning Pad.
Stenzel - Well my feeling on this and I passed this entry with a 3.o I knew that I needed to assess why he wasn't fluent
Michelle in SC - My question was would it be beneficial to create an oral, informal assessment tool/game to improve ______'s comprehension and vocabulary?
Michelle in SC - Lela, how did ya'll do that? it sounds neat!
Lela - That's helpful. What did the "face" of your document look like? Or better stated, "What did the question document consist of?"
Lela - You by glycerin, fragrance, and color from a hobby shop. You melt the glycerin, add the other stuff, and pour it in a mold and let it harden.
Michelle in SC - I just had an etiquette Dinner for my class and the trainable class. It turned out better than expected.
Stenzel - I had more than one piece of assessment to address the question
Stenzel - I've done candles before - It's fun!!]
Lela - So you used assessments to address the question instead of work samples or interviews to formulate the question?
Michelle in SC - I don't know if I'm right, this is my first go, many people said that you just have to focus on assessment and not the activity for 1.
Stenzel - You do have to talk about your findings and how they are valuable
Michelle in SC - i may have to reevaluate again and see from our questions if I have enough info. to address it properly.
Stenzel - Who are the people you need to talk to about the concern- parents, colleagues they are involved in this process
Lela - If I included my student's first work samples, a questionaire for his mother, and a third page consisting of my question-Would this be what the assessors want to see? I can use 3 more pages for assessment instruments and analysis.
Michelle in SC - Hi Hip!
thehip - hello
thehip - hellojust checking out what the chat is about
Stenzel - Does this help you assess the child better - that's what they want to see
ispy - ahhhhhh
ispy - popped open a frosty brew to unwind from a long week.......
Stenzel - Salute to you ispy
Lela - I think that I may be making a mountain out of a molehill, I just want to pass on the first go. I can't afford to bank my scores.
ispy - thank you .......tank you very much
ispy - i agree with lela
ispy - i dont want to do this thing any longer than i have to
ispy - and i believe that it is a mountain
Stenzel - It really is quite simple the question that is - It does not have to be so complicated
Michelle in SC - What do ya'll think about a daily review game after reading that review vocabulary, who, what where, when quotes and descriptions for a kid who is really a non reader but can express what he knows orally?
Stenzel - Let me tell you as a banker for the first time - the wait is what kills you
Lela - I haveheard that you can fax the Nat'l board "people" and they'll answer your questions.
Michelle in SC - I feel dead already. pampered Chef is looking good!
ispy - thats interesting lela
ispy - tupperware....
ispy - mc donalds
Stenzel - No candles
Michelle in SC - Someone told me there was a book you could buy that told you exactly what they wanted.
Michelle in SC - Wal-mart greeter
Lela - I have a publication that uses small newspaper articles to address the 5 w ?'s. This publication is published on 1st - maybe5th grade levels. I use this with each level that I have in reading.
ispy - it surley must cost a fortune is only available on the NB black market
Lela - Where can you get this book?
Stenzel - skillstreaming book seems to be a popular one- I didn't use it but that's what the buzz is about]
Lela - Is there really a NB black market?
Stenzel - Borders or Barnes and Noble
Stenzel - Yeah they are selling great T-shirts
thehip - I can't add much to the conversation so I am off to bed. Bye all.
Michelle in SC - I don't know, I've looked and ca'nt find it. I was told it was $50.00??
Lela - I loooove Barnes and Knobles. It's about time I paid them a trip!
ispy - told ya so
ispy - bye hip
Stenzel - nite-nite
Lela - It is worth it if it can help you pass the first time around. I hear that each re-take is 300.00
Lela - Bye- Thank you for your tips.
Stenzel - you are correct - oh great one
Michelle in SC - I've heard the same
Stenzel - my state will pay for 2 retakes - the pressure is on to get it done
Michelle in SC - I've seen the skill streaming book, I guess that could help w/ the social skills entry?
Lela - I'm not great, just broke!
Stenzel - it's gotten rave reviews on the list serve
Stenzel - I'm broke tooooo- it the holidays
Michelle in SC - That's nice , did you have to pay up front?
Stenzel - No - there was grant money - in Illinois we don't have as many candidates as they do in the south
Stenzel - We were ranked 9th in the nation for candidates
Michelle in SC - No one in my district has tried my area and passed it yet?! Mild/moderate Makes me nervous
Stenzel - I'm mild/moderate - we only had 222 pass this year
Michelle in SC - 222 for mild/moderate? What grade(s)
Stenzel - no for total passing candidates - I don't know how many were mild/mod
Michelle in SC - When can you take your test again?
Stenzel - I teach 4/5 Ld resource - the transition plan question got me - no experience - talk with your high school teacher that's what i'm going to do for more experience
Stenzel - Januare thru end of June - I need to pick a time
Michelle in SC - I am a high school teacher.
Stenzel - I had books to read- however, I skimmed and thought I had the jest of it - I scored a 1.3, but I did not complete the question
Stenzel - not enough time
Michelle in SC - You'll do o.k.
Stenzel - I hope- however I have a lot to read what I want is the worse case scenario and the common scenario
Michelle in SC - For transition? What do you mean exactly?
Stenzel - At the meeting I attended - we were concerned about the amount of time given for the ac - we are writing to nbc about our concerns
wizzlewolf - Happy Holidays all you NB people!!
Michelle in SC - Merry Christmas!
Stenzel - And the same to you wizzlewolf
Stenzel - Transition from high school to work and out to the community
wizzlewolf - Yes Stenzel, the time element is frightening. I wish you good luck on your appeal to NB. I kind of think they will continue with the 30 minutes for awhile though.
Stenzel - How did they come to that time element - what about 45 minutes at least 15 min. to read the case study and 30 to write
Michelle in SC - Well, i'm in a rural highschool so we do a lot of school based jobs still, applications, vocational co-teaching and simulations....restuarants,school store etc..
Stenzel - That's not asking so much
wizzlewolf - I have no idea how they came to that figure. However, I bet it was the idea of someone who has never tried to do something like this in thirty minutes! You know how that goes in education. Decission by committees that never do what they think is a great idea.
Michelle in SC - do you have 30 mins. for each question? Yikes!
Stenzel - You're set to go Michelle with transition plans
Michelle in SC - I guess, if I can help you i'd be glad to.
Stenzel - Well- all of us at the meeting were going to give a yell and I know other at the first meeting will do as well
Stenzel - I felt like I was playing the game of survivor - expecially when the clock ran out and I had 2 more questions to answer
Stenzel - Thanks Michelle - I just may ask a few questions as the date gets nearer - I do have an interview with someone at the HS
wizzlewolf - Stenzel, in a way you are playing Survivor. The 30 minute time limit cuts back on those who score high enough to certify the first time. NB doesn't want to make it easy.
Stenzel - I quess that's what the NB wants all good teachers to do talk with your colleagues
Michelle in SC - i don't do well under pressure. I felt ready to try this but now I feel like i've done nothing but think about NB this year. I'm not myself??
Stenzel - But 2 points
wizzlewolf - Michelle, aren't you a candidate?
Michelle in SC - Do you get any feedback so you know where you feel short by two point!?
wizzlewolf - NO FEEDBACK
Michelle in SC - Yes i am!
Stenzel - This process is a learning experience that is good for your soul - it was very positive - a lot of work- but very positive results from kids and community - I was nominated for a golden apple
wizzlewolf - Oh, I was confused for a moment.
Michelle in SC - Great, It's kind of like writing a grant
Stenzel - they do not tell you what went wrong - in my case - I feel it was the time element
Michelle in SC - It does make you evaluate every move you make.
Stenzel - It does make you a better teacher
wizzlewolf - Well Stenz, it is good that you can reflect and see some of the problems. Some candidates get into some sort of state of denial.
Stenzel - I know that this is a test- andddd there must be a cutoff point
Lela - Stenzel, about how long does it take to read the actual question?
Michelle in SC - i guess it will but right now I feel stressed and pressed for time
Stenzel - I would say that at least 10 minutes of reading and rereading to pull info from it
Stenzel - But - I need that kind of time - no spring chicken
wizzlewolf - Michelle, practice testing yourself. Set up pretend tests for thirty minutes. Create your own prompts and type straight for a half hour. Do it so much you get used to it.
Lela - I'm afraid of being to concise. I have a problem with gettingright to my point with no"fluff". I'm scared that that will hurt me.
Stenzel - This is a 3 year process- look at it that way
Stenzel - I'ts better to be consices and show evidence
Michelle in SC - What did you all find to be the most difficult part of NB other than time?
wizzlewolf - Waiting for the scores.
Stenzel - my mentor made me write and rewrite my portfolio- however- it made me reflect more which is good the ac was the hardes for me
Michelle in SC - I heard it was go to be consice. Just make sure anyone could understand your explaination.
Stenzel - Yes in the ac part you could answer in phrases
Michelle in SC - Well if waiting and the tests are the hardest parts i'm in for a real party!
wizzlewolf - Keep it straight forward. Go back and edit, edit, edit. Get rid of every unnecessary word.
Stenzel - that'ss the ticket
Lela - Thank you for telling me this. I was penalized for finishing early when I tested for my Master's degree. I had to go back for oral exams.
Michelle in SC - in the porfolio or during the ac??
wizzlewolf - Lela are you a candidate?
Lela - Yes, I am.
Stenzel - in the ac test - spelling and grammar isn't the most important - of course they do have to understand you
Lela - Oops! the sherry's getting to me.
Stenzel - I need more merlot
Michelle in SC - good night all!
wizzlewolf - Goodnight Michelle!
Stenzel - good night Michelle - I'll keep you posted - I could use your help
Lela - I have been hashing and rehashing entry one. I have delineated a list of accomplishments for #4, but I don't know how to prove impact.
Michelle in SC - O.K>
Lela - Good night, Michelle!
wizzlewolf - Gotta go. Bye and Great Good Luck!!
Stenzel - thanks wizzlewolf
Michelle in SC - Thanks!
Lela - Au revoir! I'm going, too.
Stenzel - bye all
