Barb/2/NE - Hello! Welcome to the Private/Parochial teacher chat!
Barb/2/NE - Have you ever been to this site before?
martha - No, I havent
martha - It is good to find good sites to chat on
Barb/2/NE - Tons of good information is here, lots of lesson plans and teachers willing to share ideas
martha - I am willing to get lesson plans
martha - I am teaching history for only the second time
Barb/2/NE - they also have a chatboard just for Private school teachers. http://www.teachers.net/mentors/
martha - I will hit it up on Sunday if I get a chance
Barb/2/NE - I also belong to some of the mailrings that are set up for specific subject areas. I belong to the 2nd grade teachers mailring
martha - I teach in an inner city catholic school
Barb/2/NE - I bet you have some special needs and problems in your school. How big are your classes?
Barb/2/NE - I teach at a school were the children are very protected by their parents, sometimes they can be very involved with the school
martha - I am not sure. I start just last Thursday
Barb/2/NE - Martha, really! WOW
martha - Really!
Barb/2/NE - Hi Pat, fellow 2nd grade teacher! Welcome
Pat/2nd/NV - Thanks, 2nd grade is great!
martha - The ad was in the local paper and I called to get info about the position . Sr talked me into an interview
Barb/2/NE -Pat, are you getting your students ready for reconciliation?
Barb/2/NE - Martha, good luck to you! How many students?
Pat/2nd/NV - Sorry, what is reconciliation?
Barb/2/NE - welcome back Pat, did you get disconnected?
martha - I have 26 7th graders and about 30 6th graders
Barb/2/NE - Pat, I teach in a Catholic school. Are you in a private school?
Pat/2nd/NV - Yes, a private Christian school in Nevada.
Barb/2/NE - Martha, those are big classes! Are you teaching American history?
martha - I like that 6th graders and have to pray those 7th graders out of giving it to me
mac - Hi I'm having a little trouble with this format so I hope that this goes through
martha - My 6th grader classes are about 16 each but the 7th grade is on big bunch
Barb/2/NE - Pat, in the Catholic schools, most 2nd graders receive the sacrament of reconciliation (also called confession) this year.
Pat/2nd/NV - Mac, it came through just fine.
martha - Yes, I teach American History and World history
Pat/2nd/NV - OK, now I know. I grew up as a Catholic but didn't recognize the term.
Barb/2/NE - martha, 7th grade is a big transitional year. Not the big shots yet, like 8th graders, and not little, like the 6th graders
martha - They are walking hormones with peer pressure!
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, what grade do you teach?
Goobers51 - Second--in MD
martha - I think it fits the age and grade
Barb/2/NE - Pat, boy have I had a problem with tattletalers this year! Goobers and Pat, got any good Christian ways to stop that?
Goobers51 - That has been a huge problem withthis class--and it's over the stupidest things!
Pat/2nd/NV - It is really difficult. They are so self centered. I always require they talk to the person first Matthew 18. Then if they don't stop they can talk to me. Doesn't count if it is a safety issue.
Barb/2/NE - This is my second year with 2nd grade, maybe it's the age!
martha - Have you tried asking them is it your problem?
Goobers51 - I always tell them if someone isn't hurt, it's a tattle.
martha - I have a 3 year old with a tattleing problem
Goobers51 - It's my 12th year with 2nd and it is the age--they have this sense of fairness that they think they have to uphold all the time.
Pat/2nd/NV - Usually if you ask if they are tattling they get a guilty look and admit they are.
Barb/2/NE - It's gotten much better, I have been asking them if they talked to the person first. I also remind them that we are a family in Room 103!
Pat/2nd/NV - Great, Barb. That's how I handle it and it stops a lot of the tattling
Barb/2/NE - Frank and mac, what grade?
Goobers51 - That's good--but I think they probably get away with tattling at home too!
Barb/2/NE - Pat, thanks for the reminder of Matthew 18
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, yes!
mac - Well anyway hello all! I'm in second grade in a Catholic school in Ct.
Frank - I haven't taught a day yet. I'm still going to school.
Barb/2/NE - mac, now we have 4 2nd grade teachers here!
Barb/2/NE - Frank, would you like to teach in a Private school. I love it and wouldn't teach anywhere else!
Goobers51 - Go second grade! Isn't it really a great age to teach?
Barb/2/NE - Amen, Goober~
Goobers51 - I wouldn't teach anywhere else either--it's fantastic...
Barb/2/NE - martha, you'll love teaching at a Private school.
mac - That's great. We only have one class per grade level so it's good to have someone to talk to
Goobers51 - We do too and it's real hard to bounce things off someone in a different grade
Frank - I wouldn't mind but my sisters teaches in public school and my father taught for 37 years in public schools so I geuss thats the direction I'm headed.
Barb/2/NE - Anyone have any good religious Christmas presents for parents?
Pat/2nd/NV - I've been in 2nd for 6 years, before that older children. I love 2nd!
mac - Absolutely, I have some friends in the public schools that share some ideas but our needs are very different.
Goobers51 - Does anyone have a problem with wandering eyes? I've never had a class where so many of them cheat at this early age.
Barb/2/NE - mac, since you teach in a Catholic school, are your 2nd graders preparing for Reconciliation?
mac - I've been in grade 2 for 5 years and before that 4th and 5th. 2nd graders are the best.
Pat/2nd/NV - I go through that with every test. It has never been this bad. They don't even sneak, they just look.
story - Would you like to introduce of yoursleves?
Barb/2/NE - Do you suppose it's a cultural thing?
mac - Yes we are preparing for both Reconciliation and First Eucharist. How about you?
Barb/2/NE - Story, my name says it all!
story - I'm not a teacher, I'm a student/
Goobers51 - I teach 2nd inMD
Barb/2/NE - mac, Reconciliation is set for November 20th
Goobers51 - mine is Dec. 5
mac - Wow that's early. We're not scheduled until April
story - Barb, I want to say with you/.
Frank - I'm a little nervous about teaching. Would you recommend student teaching before I start with the real job.
Goobers51 - DEFINITELY!!!
Barb/2/NE - I wish it was later too! Lots of work to do! Our parents have a take home text to help supliment our work, so that helps!
story - Barb What are you? Tell me.
mac - If I told my kids that they were receiving next week they would freak.
mac - Are your parents really helping?
Pat/2nd/NV - I think I must just keep sending messages or I get knocked off. I can't just sit and read.
story - Barb, HOW OLD ARE YOU?
mac - I find that many parents don't go to confession and they need to go through a learning curve themselves.
Pat/2nd/NV - How big is your school Barb. Are you the only 2nd grade teacher?
Goobers51 - mine help too with a book they use at home--the parents like it because it refreshes their memory too!
Barb/2/NE - mac, yes, we have a text from Sadlier for both reconciliation and Eucharist
Barb/2/NE - Pat, 540 studens, 2 classes of each grade
mac - Barb, we're using Silver Burditt but the CCD classes are in Sadlier.
Pat/2nd/NV - It is about the same size as our school. We have three classes of primary then goes down to two in elementary. One for each JR and SR high class. I think we have around 650 or so.
mac - How many students do you have in your second grade classes
Goobers51 - 22
Pat/2nd/NV - 20
mac - Goober, so do I
Goobers51 - it's a good size--I'll have 31 next year :>(
Pat/2nd/NV - It's a good size. All mine are readers so I'm having fun with comprehension this year.
Barb/2/NE - mac, we have a parent meeting with the pastor
mac - I'll be right back guys, one of my kids needs help
Barb/2/NE - I have 29
Goobers51 - large classes are so difficult to do neat things with...
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, my husband is from College Park, Maryland
Goobers51 - Hey--how did he land in NE?
Barb/2/NE - Pat, It comes and goes, no rhyme or reason!
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, Creighton University, that's where we both went
Goobers51 - I'm a transplant too--I grew up in NJ!
Barb/2/NE - Our school is stressing the theme of Social Justice this year. Do any of your schools have themes?
Goobers51 - Ours is courage this year--like courage to make the right choices--the patron is St, Joan of Arc
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, that sounds neat. What have you done as a school for your theme? Or is it just a classroom thing?
Avi - any responses to the question of private vs public education and the issue of social justice relative to elite status private schools hold within the culture?
Barb/2/NE - Mac, I've also been to Conn. My husband's Grandma lived in Southington
Goobers51 - No, it's schoolwide. Our opening Mass was dedicated to her, and at the All Saints Mass, the 7th and 8th grade did a portrayal of her life. All of the children received holy cards with a prayer to St. Joan on it. uring the rest of the year, the children receive "Courage Coupons' for displaying acts of courage. These coupons are put ina specail box and periodically the principal has drawings for prizes.
Barb/2/NE - Avi, we are not elitist at our school. We accept all children
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, wonderful idea!
Misty - I need some teacher help
Pat/2nd/NV - Goobers I grew up in Newark. Two years in Florida, then in the Air Force and on to Nevada. I've been here ever since.
Barb/2/NE - Hi Misty, welcome to the Private/Parochial School teachers chat!
Misty - I need to understand what exactly an oral language lesson is
Goobers51 - Avi--we aren't elitist weither--to the contrary.
Barb/2/NE - Misty, speaking the English language correctly
Goobers51 - Misty--it might take different forms--it might be a lesson in public speaking; or this week in my reading series it's lessons about differentforms of musical language...
Goobers51 - Do you need to do one?
Barb/2/NE - Does anyone belong to the REAP newsletter? It's put out by Joan/1/FL, it's very good, she collects religious education ideas each month from it's members and emails them to you once a month
Pat/2nd/NV - Avi, there are some very elitist private schools but not the majority. We have a very mixed socioeconomic population at our school.
Goobers51 - she does an awesome job...great ideas
misty - I need to incorporate one with my unit on dinosaurs
Avi - Barb, that's great, but what about the view that the media, the right, the less informed put forth that private is better than public? Wouldn't it be better if we developed a mindset that it's different, refer to Dewy's work.
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, what name do you use in the REAP newsletter. I took her idea of a Jubilee School Pilgrimage, it was wonderful!
misty - Could it be on the pronunciation of the names
Goobers51 - Avi--I think there is a difference between private and parochial too--most of us are parochial, I think
Goobers51 - Barb--Pam/2/MD
Barb/2/NE - Avi, I'm not here to have an arguement, I'm here to share ideas with my fellow private school teachers, try room 1
Barb/2/NE - Thanks, Goobers, I save all my newletters! I'll look you up!
Goobers51 - Misty--that would work
mac - Each type of school has its good and bad points. There is no one perfect educational setting for everyone
Avi - hay, sorry, I must have misunderstood
Goobers51 - Barb--I haven't contribute much yet--but plan to!!!
Barb/2/NE - How about some Christmas/Advent bulletin boards, got a special one to share?
Barb/2/NE - Avi, that's ok
Barb/2/NE - Oh No! Pat! You are one determined chatter! I bet you are a great teacher, with your stick-to-itive-ness!
mac - Pat are you still getting bumped off?
Pat/2nd/NV - I hope this is just a fluke. I'm beginning to feel picked upon.
Goobers51 - Our whole floor participates in Advent services every week, and after the first one everyone traces one of their hands on green construction paper. On each finger they write things they would like to do/improve during Advent. We tape them on a hall wall in the shape of a huge wreath with a big red bow toshow everyone our Advent resolutions.
mac - Well at least you don't give up
Goobers51 - Poor Pat..stay with us this time!
Barb/2/NE - I read about a teacher who had a black outline of Bethleham and a star above it, sounds striking
story - hi, All of you
Goobers51 - it does--on white?
Pat/2nd/NV - I've been bumped off around 4 times, but I wanted to talk to other private school teachers on the web. Our situation is a different and unique from the public teachers, although enjoy talking to them as well.
story - Who would you tell me?
Barb/2/NE - Goobers, that sounds very nice! We did the dagwood blossoms for Lent with the same idea
Goobers51 - I've heard of that too...
Barb/2/NE - Goober, I was thinking midnight blue background, Black paper for the city outline and the words, "Oh Holy Night" in yellow, Kind of like the christmas card

mac - So am I Pat

Barb/2/NE - Pat, not too many messages, but lately we have been sharing about the unique concerns of a private school
Goobers51 - how do the mailrings work?
Barb/2/NE - here is the link for mailrings http://www.teachers.net/mailrings/
story - what Theme do you talk with?
Barb/2/NE - they have made it really easy to join and unjoin if it is too much mail
story - Oh, This is a teachers group, right?
mac - There's a chat room at 2ndgrade but no one is ever on it. That might be a great place to share
Goobers51 - right...doyou plan to teach? Where are you from?
Barb/2/NE - yes, Story, we are all Private/Parochial teachers sharing ideas
iteach5th - hi barb I think i'm in the wrong place though
