Grace/IL - It's been quiet on the chatboard all week. Guess everyone's back to work and inundated.
naneb - we have all been swamped at work
cavey - Oh so that one is scarlet, sorry nan!
judy3ca - nan, I was going to post to congratulate you, but I knew I'd "see" you tonight. One more time, good for you!
judy3ca - (((cavey)))
naneb - I was ready to give up and that book did it, they were fascinated with the illustrations, I think we will study illustrators later in the year
naneb - I almost missed tonight but I have fought off the sleep
naneb - ((((((((((((Cavey))))))))))))
cavey - Here we go! Hi girls! ((( Grace, Sleek, Nan))
judy3ca - Nan, I have a couple of great books at work that talk about illustrators and the author/illustrator relationship.
naneb - brb, I have to clean this screen!
Grace/IL - Hi cavey & Brad
judy3ca - Hi Brad!
brad - I am WHOOPED!!
cavey - Hey big daddy!
judy3ca - whooped works for me--I'm tired and joyful
Grace/IL - Brad, you had too much time away. I'll bet it's really tough getting back to ti.
naneb - Okay Judy send me the titles!! more money gone!!
Grace/IL - It, that is.
brad - Very tough.
cavey - Brad, do you mean whupped?
judy3ca - Nan, remind me next week, please, since they're at work.
brad - No, Cavey, I'm more than whipped, I'm Whooped!
Grace/IL - Hi eilene
eilene/il - hey, guys!!
judy3ca - Guess who is going to see Linda Hoyt tomorrow?
cavey - No Brad, whupped is a southern expression
judy3ca - Hi Eilene
naneb - guess who goes to London in 11 days?
naneb -
judy3ca - LOLOL, nan
cavey - Hi Eilene!
judy3ca - nan, a friend at work just got back from London--loved it
cavey - Oh Nan, quit your bragging!
naneb - I am really getting excited, my sister sent me a coat and I got it today
Grace/IL - London on a vacation? business?
naneb - Okay, Cavey, but I can't brag at work, everyone is toooo jealous!!
brad - Oh, please, you southerners and your lack of fine outerwear.
naneb - vacation, Grace
eilene/il - brad, did you once say you were from Ohio?
brad - i am
Grace/IL - How wonderful. Hubby wants to go to England. Don't know WHEN we'll get that arranged.
naneb - we found an exceptionally good deal or I would not be missing a week of school
cavey - Brad, how's Trey?
brad - Trey is fussy baby.
judy3ca - brad, are your older kids enjoying the baby?
brad - He must have things "just so."
cavey - Brad is fussy daddy
Grace/IL - Is Trey colicky?
brad - I wouldn't call it colic
Grace/IL - Work all day, listen to baby cry all night . . .
cavey - Trey is obviously gifted
naneb - I am going t ouse my digital camera and make a powerpoint travelogue for my students and then we are going to read that magic Treehouse book about meeting William shakespeare
eilene/il - oh, pooht! Boyfriend just came over. I have to go. Have a good night, everybody!
brad - They really don't pay a whole lot of attention to the baby
cavey - Why did Eilene leave?
naneb - her boyfriend came over
brad - No, he does take a spell every evening from about 5-7, but he's okay through the night
cavey - Oh Nan, I do a Shakespeare thing. Get the Burdett books.
naneb - brad, my oldest son was just like that, he got over it as he got older
judy3ca - I hated 5-7 when my kids were little!
brad - He just has to have quiet and with the other two he doesn't get that much
Grace/IL - My first two were 7 years apart. Son was always like an extra parent -- loved his little sister.
cavey - Well, big daddy, what are we complaining about then?
naneb - me too, Judy the busiest time and the kids were always awful
brad - Well, my children are each 5 years apart, so in that aspect. . . big sis does want to be mom, but only on her schedule.
judy3ca - Right, nan, and I told my parents NOT to call then, so I think they misunderstood and that's when they called, too.
cavey - My first one cried from 10 to 3am
Grace/IL - That's for sure about the complaining. I didn't sleep through a night for two years with my first one.
judy3ca - oh, cavey, poor you!
brad - Oh, Caleb didn't sleep through the night until he was two
judy3ca - OMG, my kids were angels, ROFL!
naneb - I stayed up every night with my daughter, I just put a glass of water and a book on the table by the rocker every night
cavey - The second one was a dream!
brad - Last night, Trey actually slept until 3, so maybe there's hope for him
judy3ca - And now they're even better because they're gone.
cavey - Think you'll keep him, brad?
naneb - youngest son put himselfto bed every night
brad - LOL< Judy. I"m waiting!
naneb - ROFL!! Judy
cavey - Judy !!!! You are bad!!
brad - I always say we have a 6 month guarantee with the hospital. Had my daughter going with Caleb on that one.
Grace/IL - My second was really easy to raise. There was a lot of family stress when the third one came but she managed pretty well.
brad - Nan, caleb used to put himself to bed until he started going to preschool this time last year. Then they made him take naps and now he stays up until ten/eleven, later if we'd let him
judy3ca - Brad, it happens so quickly. I'm so glad I was able to spend so many years at home with my kids, so I really do feel I deserve some adult time now. My husband and I were noticing that we love the lack of drama around the house now.
cavey - Been there, done that, not going back
cavey - Oh Judy, I can't imagine you without drama!
brad - We've never been just us Judy, so that's how we feel too.
cavey - I can relate brad, mine never napped after age 2
brad - The good thing about having them so far apart is there's not really been any squabbling yet
naneb - give it time Brad!!
brad - Sure, they argue, but not like I did with my brother or sister
judy3ca - cavey, ROFL--you know me! Just today I sent a long email to my friend at work about my 'crisis of confidence.' She sent a long reply and even came to check on me, LOL. Yup, where do you think my kids learned all that drama?
cavey - I've got squabbling!
brad - And they will NEVER be teenagers "together"
naneb - mine were great together until they got older
cavey - Yeah, and never be in college together
judy3ca - Mine are 6 1/2 years apart.
naneb - I really can't remember any big fights, my kids were always a united front against the parents
brad - Unless they're like me, Cavey, the lifelong student
judy3ca - cavey, that's what we were hoping by having our kids so far apart--to be able to pay for college.
cavey - Is that what you did before teaching? I was wondering.
naneb - or my son, he has been to 4 different schools and no degree yet, but boy does he have credits
Grace/IL - My girls fought during junior high and high school years. Lived at the same house in college and really started to get along. They're absolutely best friends now.
brad - My brother and I fought like cats and dogs until I moved out
cavey - Oh Nan, he's finding himself!
brad - Actually cavey I held two jobs while I went to school so I took my time. . . .LOL
Grace/IL - Hubby says send them away at 13 and take them back at 25.
naneb - brad, my youngest is like that he is working and going to school slow and easy!!
cavey - Not independently wealthy then brad?
naneb - or just send them away!! ;D
naneb - oops
brad - um, no, to say the least
cavey - That's my plan Grace!
judy3ca - Our daughter just wrote that she'd been recommended to be an RA next year--oh, boy, were we excited to save board. It lasted 24 hours until she found out band isn't eligible.
brad - Send them to Grace!! LOL.
judy3ca - Grace, your hubby has a good idea.
Grace/IL - band isn't eligible? No comprendo
judy3ca - Grace, band takes too much time--not enough time left to be RA.
brad - We're talking children, Michelle
Grace/IL - Actually, I enjoyed my girls as teens.
Michelle/3/OR - I see....I was thinking how my sister and I hated each other.
Grace/IL - , I get it. Grandson was in marching band -- took lots and lots of time.
Michelle/3/OR - HATED
judy3ca - Right, Grace, it is marching band. Sorry I was unclear.
judy3ca - And now, Michelle?
cavey - How do you make cat fight sounds ?
judy3ca - And Now, Miguel?
brad - Reer?
Grace/IL - What instrument does she play?
Michelle/3/OR - when my son was born and when her son was 5, we lived together for a year. We got along...but only because I refused to argue with her.
Grace/IL - Cavey, ffft, ffft!
cavey - Reoooow!
judy3ca - Piccolo in band, trained on flute.
cavey - Claws in or out Michelle?
Grace/IL - Love that piccolo. What talent!
judy3ca - Grace, what does your grandson play?
Michelle/3/OR - She's difficult to get along with. When I visited her shortly after she was married, she chewed me out big time. Then her husband screamed at her for half an hour for treating me so bad. She's been nice to me ever since.
Grace/IL - #1, trombone; #2 trumpet
Michelle/3/OR - so we get along now. It also helps that she lives in North Carolina
cavey - So sorry Michelle, in all seriousness.
judy3ca - Grace, now those are good instruments! I hate the piccolo, LOL. And her boyfriend plays tuba--what a pair!
brad - what does she do michelle
naneb - I play a trumpet
Michelle/3/OR - well, that big blowout was 7 years ago. So, we get along perfectly well, now. Seriously.
naneb - or i used to play a trumpet!
Michelle/3/OR - She raises 5, almost 6 children.
cavey - My sister and I are 8 years apart. Very different. She's the quiet one.
Grace/IL - Grandson #4 started on the tuba but quit. I was soooo disappointed.
judy3ca - nan, I like trumpet a lot! Good for you! Do you play often?
naneb - played for 9 years in school, I don't even have one now
judy3ca - Awwww, cavey, I thought YOU were quiet!!!!!
brad - egads, Michelle. Is she aware what causes that?
naneb - I have a twin sister, she's my best friend
brad - I'm the quiet one in my family
cavey - Very funny. I thought you were sleek, Judy!
Michelle/3/OR - that's what my relatives always ask, brad.
judy3ca - ROFL, cavey!
Grace/IL - nan, do you still play? Son plays in a great band -- alto, tenor, soprano sax.
naneb - right Brad and we all believe that!!
brad - they don't know me very well, do they?
naneb - Grace, no I was sick of it after 9 years, sometimes wish I had one to play though
cavey - Brad, QUIET???????
judy3ca - I'd be willing to believe that Brad is quiet--seriously.
Michelle/3/OR - he must just have noisy fingers?
brad - I played piano for about five years. Had to give it up for lack of instrument. Hate that I did. Been about 13 years since I've played.
Michelle/3/OR - Me too, brad...piano
cavey - Yeah, he just has a ranting keyboard!
brad - Michelle, the more you and I have in common.
naneb - I played piano too, my son plays a mean blues guitar
judy3ca - Does anyone know if Kim will be joining us tonight?
brad - By the way, my wife was rolling the other day when I mentioned your all's schema of me
Michelle/3/OR - My mom has my piano...if I ever buy a house, I will take it back. I'd love to start playing again.
cavey - No talent for cavey
Michelle/3/OR - It's getting weird, brad.
judy3ca - nan, my husband is a pretty good guitarist.
Grace/IL - Hubby had the piano tuned yesterday. He has a Steinway baby grand -- what and instrument! -- and He rarely touches it.
judy3ca - Non musical here, too, cavey.
brad - Wow Grace. I'd like to buy a piano someday
brad - I was in choir and all the musicals in high school, though
cavey - Oh , i accidentily make a face thing
naneb - Judy, my son can't read music but he can play anything, listens to the radio and plays the song, amazing
judy3ca - Wow, Grace, how wonderful!
Michelle/3/OR - I have a flute, too. I didn't like playing the flute, though (flute for sale)
judy3ca - nan, my husband can do that, too.
Grace/IL - I play AT the piano. I didn't play much for years but now go at it a bit -- very slowly
diane - how is everyone?
Grace/IL - Played clarinet in high school but didn't follow through with that.
brad - By the way, Judy, I'm NOT quiet. I think they get that perception because I read a lot as a child
cavey - Brad, you are quiet, but in musicals? My schema is getting all messed up!!!
brad - I was always "off in the corner with a book" as they would say
Grace/IL - I really envy those with musical ears and perfect pitch. I have to carry the tune in a bushel basket.
judy3ca - Brad, I have a new picture of you now as a quiet singer/dancer.
Michelle/3/OR - I registered for the IRA regional conference...I'm glad my principal will let me go even though it goes right through both our parent-teacher conference days.
cavey - Hi Michikim!!
brad - Cavey I really enjoyed theater. I was thinking just the other day how much I miss it
Michelle/3/OR - AND I registered to have lunch withEve Bunting....very excited!
judy3ca - ROFL, Brad, I was kidding.
diane - oh michelle...i'm so jealous...mine told me i'd have to come up with the money
brad - LOL, Judy, a quiet singer/dancer
Grace/IL - (((Michikim)))
naneb - I am soooo jealous!! Michelle
Mrs. J - Hello, Cavey and all
cavey - Brad, I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in high school
judy3ca - Michelle, OHHHHHHHHH, lucky you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
brad - Wow, Cavey. I was in the Lollipop Guild
naneb - I was Gertie in Oklahoma!!
brad - (just a freshman that year)
diane - and...i was looking forward to meeting you, too
cavey - No, she's a sleek, jazzy, bluesy singer
Mrs. J - I was Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof
Grace/IL - All you talented actors and actresses - I'm jealous
brad - Judy the Sleek Jazzy Bluesy Singer. What a great one for SI
Michelle/3/OR - I figured that since the district is getting a cost break with me already being an IRA member, they can use some of that money for me to go to the author luncheon.
judy3ca - Noooooooo, I can't sing at all. It's painful.
diane - lol, michelle, good thinking!
Grace/IL - Daughter # I was Chava in FOTR. She did a lot of theater work.
naneb - I can't wait to use that poem Sharon sent for SI,
brad - Judy, dont' mess my schema!! LOL
judy3ca - Michelle, I think you are so very lucky to get to be in the same room as Eve Bunting!
brad - (and I'm picturing you in a slinky robin's egg blue dress too. LOL, just like your screen name)
cavey - No Brad, she is definitely in black, with a boa
judy3ca - Brad, seriously toneless here. And I was surprised to hear the way my voice sounds on the videotape my Lit Coach made this week--I hope it was just the tape.
judy3ca - Dress?????????
judy3ca - Yup, love those boas!
brad - Uh Huh. Slit up to there.
cavey - Oh Judy, I can't believe how bad my drawl is until I hear it on tape!
cavey - BTW, I want a copy of your tape Sleek One
judy3ca - You do NOT want a copy of the tape, LOL. But I was surprised to find a couple of good things. I usually am very hard on myself.
brad - Okay, not to change subject, but raise your hand if you're tired of all the beeching at your building about (what I consider) doing your job
Kim/1/Ca - (((smooches to all)))sorry I am late.........
Grace/IL - I wondered how you accomplished that.
diane - brad, for instance?
cavey - ((((KIM Oneka)))
Mrs. J - Hand raised, waving madly, Brad
Mrs. J - Hi, other kim
judy3ca - brad, it don't get it--breeching at the building?
Kim/1/Ca - Did I miss something rilly rilly good?
Grace/IL - ((((Kim)))) You've missed sooo much of this very important professional reading chat.
brad - Beeching is a nice word for something else, Judy
Michelle/3/OR - we are building our schema.
Kim/1/Ca - So sorry again....busy digging little graves.
Michelle/3/OR - all talented musicians and actors
brad - Oh, I actually heard a few beeching today about having to find time to "listen to their students read" in a conference
judy3ca - oh, LOL, got it. We don't beech much at my school.
diane - wow...i can't even picture it.
Michelle/3/OR - it depends who you hang around in my school...i try not to surround myself with those people
brad - And, again, not to change the subject, but cross your fingers for me, the new online grading starts next week. Responsible for one grade per week per subject
judy3ca - Except for me, Michelle, not an actor or singer--just, dare I say it, ordinary, LOL.
diane - we don't have much beeching either, judy...but take me to a district grade level meeting and i am in hell
Grace/IL - digging little graves? A pun, perhaps?
judy3ca - Good luck, Brad.
naneb - we don't have much complaining either
brad - Diane?
diane - brad?
judy3ca - diane, ROFL, I hate meetings--any kind. I have kind of a bad rep at my school for meetings.
naneb - I am going to develop a rubric for my reading so that I have grades, any ideas?
brad - what about district meeting?
Michelle/3/OR - diane, once this year a 3rd grade teacher from another school came to my school looking for other third grade teachers to complain with about the new math adoption. I was the only one there.
brad - What are you trying to assess Nan
Kim/1/Ca - Noooo Grace, but good pun, huh? Nope....... little graves for some of my kids. Great discipline tool.
diane - brad, we get together once per month or so to meet with all the teachers on our grade level in the district
brad - Fluency, comp. . .?
naneb - I want to assess their use of the strategies
naneb - like you I need at least one grade per week
judy3ca - However, I think one of the reasons I don't hear much complaining is that I rarely venture from my classroom.
brad - Individually or as a repertoire?
diane - since i don't have any grade level colleagues i was really hopeful at first...
Grace/IL - Tell us about it, Kim -- a new discipline procedure?
brad - sometimes that's the best policy, judy
diane - then i found out that it is a chance to vent about state testing, pass out dittos from 1910, and complain about our admin...god awful
cavey - Me either, Thrika, I am wonderfully cluelessly out of the loop!
naneb - individually the one we are working on and also their ability to use the others once they have been taught
brad - yes, diane, exactly what I'm talking about
brad - waht about the rubrics at mosaicteachers?
judy3ca - Brad, today I went to the lunchroom for the first time in years and friends made such a big deal of it that I'll probably never go back, LOL.
judy3ca - cavey, sometimes out of the loop is a great place to be.
naneb - Brad, I forgot all about them thanks for reminding me!!
diane - fortunately, i feel like my school is millions of miles apart...
Kim/1/Ca - Just a rough week, Grace. AFter a LOT of rigamarole, Kwinzi's mom finally got him some ritilin. And then stupid-drughead-gangbanger father waltzes back home from prison and flushes them down the toilet cuz "all that boy needs is discipline!"
Michelle/3/OR - I can't stand spending consecutive days in the staff room for lunch.
diane - do you deal with state test obsession issues at your school, michelle?
brad - For general purposes (as a repertorie) I've used the rubric I gave to you that you posted on your sites
judy3ca - (((KIm and Kwinzi)))
cavey - Oh Kim!
naneb - OMG! listen to this!! I got an email from the superintendent and he wants a copy of my national board videos!! Ack!!
Michelle/3/OR - oh, geez, kim.
Grace/IL - Ouch! Poor kiddos!
diane - wow, nan
Kim/1/Ca - you DID keep those videos, right nan?
Sadie T - Hi everyone!
diane - nan, i'm still trying to decide about national boards...i am definitely leaning in that direction for next year, though
naneb - I think I may have taped over them,
judy3ca - Speaking of images--BRAD, I don't see you as an 'eek' kind of guy.
brad - LOL, (what's an 'eek' kind of guy?)
cavey - Guys don't say eek, do they?
Michelle/3/OR - sounds kinda.....squeaky
Sadie T - What was Brad eeking about?
judy3ca - Just a different image, I guess.
cavey - For that matter, I don't say eek either.
Mrs. J - I don't know anyone who has done national boards--why do you want to do that, Diane? And why did you, Nan?
brad - I was going for something a little different than Yikes
Kim/1/Ca - Of course, this poor-excuse-for-a-human-being-much-less-a-father actually CAME to school ranting and raving and pacing and screaming about how our "school psychologist" had the nerve to "PRESCRIBE" him ritilin! We were just slack-jawed. THIS from a guy very obviously flying high on SOMETHING!
naneb - it started out because Mississippi gives a $6000 per year raise for certifying
Grace/IL - (((Glenda)))
cavey - I guess we need some masculine expressions of surprise
brad - yeah, michikim, most places give an incentive
judy3ca - Hi Glenda!
Mrs. J - ooooh, that's an incentive
brad - Aw hell?
Michelle/3/OR - oh! with that kind of motivation, I would definitely consider it.
cavey - Now you're talking bubba!
judy3ca - Speaking of expressions, one of the reasons my husband was laughing riotously at my tape was because I actually say, "Hmmmm." And not once, but several times. I think I've spent too much time in here.
Mrs. J - We give NOTHING! Perhaps that's why we have no one who's done it!
diane - mrs j...oregon licensure requirements changed right before i got my license. my master's isn't enough. i have to reenroll for more graduate credits...2 year program offered at my university...i can get a grant to pay for national board to save me $2000...i can get it done in half the time...plus, i just really like a personal challenge, i suppose
Glenda 1st TN - What kind of incentive are you talking about?
cavey - Oh for Pete's sake Nan, I thought you got rid of her!
naneb - Michelle, I don't think there is enough money to get you to finish, it was a personal accomplishment
Kim/1/Ca - Hmmmm, Judy........
brad - Suddenly I have a strange craving for cinnamon toast. Just thought I'd share
naneb - I sent the email
Michelle/3/OR - After taking 2 classes last spring, plus trying to get my son to baseball practices & games...I refuse to take more than 1 class per term.
Kim/1/Ca - bring me some, brad...........<<<<homer drool)
Mrs. J - So if you get the national board, you won't need additional credits ever?
judy3ca - Kim, LOL, it sounds better here than on tape, LOL.
Grace/IL - You bet he/she is!
Michelle/3/OR - oh, you have that new license thingy diane? It's horrible.
diane - kim, it will get me recertified in oregon for 10 years
Sadie T - If you have no monitor you can't see the chat
naneb - you have been reported! if you have been reported before your iSP will receive notice that you are abusing your internet service and it can be suspended!!
Grace/IL - Cinnamon toast does sound good. Shall we stop for tea?
naneb - no, no, no! no cinnamon toast! I am on a diet
Kim/1/Ca - Tea and toast.....hmmmmmmmm.
brad - judy, whatcha reading personally right now?
diane - oh michelle, it is the WORST...i'm so frustrated. i'm waiting for tspc to change it's mind again...with the state of affairs for oregon schools, their going to lose teachers if they don't update the bad requirements...grrr...
cavey - I'm with you nan!
Kim/1/Ca - I am finishing the Cornwell book. Jack the Ripper: Case Solved.
judy3ca - Brad, you mean fiction? I'm reading Grisham (what a challenge).
diane - nan, no cinnamon toast for me either...low carb here
brad - I went to library and reserved Little Friend and Lovely Bones
Michelle/3/OR - I have done so well! I haven't drank any soda all year! I used to drink 2-3 cans of Coke per day
naneb - Kim, did you like it? I may buy it to take to London
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, I love Cornwell. Is this book good?
brad - And got "Emperor of Ocean Park" and "Summerland"
judy3ca - Good boy, Brad, for reserving The Little Friend. However....
naneb - I am reading Evening Class by Maeve Binchy
Grace/IL - I grabbed my book of Willa Cather's short stories -- and I'm rereading Priscilla Vail.
brad - Binchy is girly Nan
Michelle/3/OR - diane...i got my basic license literally days before the deadline before the new system
Sadie T - Kim, is your book club still scheduled for Monday?
cavey - Well, I'm reading the Witch of Blackbird Pond
naneb - this one is good, Brad
Kim/1/Ca - It is a non-fiction book. Very detailed. Not exactly riveting, but I couldn't get into The Hours. So.......finishing it up before trying The Hours again.
judy3ca - Oh, Brad, do tell me about "Emperor" when you read it. I remember the reviews and it sounded great!
brad - Hey, Kim, I received notice at school today that Rita Pierson is giving an inservice on Ruby Payne's stuff. Worth going?
diane - man michelle, now i am doubly jealous of you...eve bunting and now this??
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Sadie.......I am getting excited about it.
judy3ca - Atta girl, cavey, be a good teacher, LOL.
naneb - I think I will pass on the Cornwell and buy it in paperback
Kim/1/Ca - It's good info, Brad........explains a lot. Doesn't EXCUSE, just explains.
Sadie T - Did teachers get an explanation about the articles this time?
Michelle/3/OR - my principal tells me I should read Lovely Bones
diane - although, i would have wanted to do the national board regardless....maybe not this soon, however
judy3ca - cavey, actually, one of our 5th grade teachers visited the Witch site last summer and loved it!
Michelle/3/OR - she said "you will use all your strategies!"
brad - Do you know PIerson though?
cavey - Thank you Sleek Mentor!
naneb - one of my former students was arrested for murder this week, he is 16 years old
judy3ca - no
brad - That's awful Nan
diane - oh, nan, that's horrible
Michelle/3/OR - I'm only reading non-fiction, unfortunately. My one class has a lot of required reading
Sadie T - Wow, Nan. How awful!
naneb - it is awful, the whole school is in shock!
judy3ca - Oooh, cavey, that's a great title, I owe you!
brad - what class michelle
Kim/1/Ca - I went to a "discussion group" meeting last night for a graduate/doctorate program. They asked about the Book Club and were on the edge of their seats. LOL
Glenda 1st TN - Oh Nan, how awful!
naneb - I have his brother this year too
Grace/IL - nan, we have a missing teen in our area. Suspect the worst.
Kim/1/Ca - Never heard of Pierson. Unless she is related to one of my students. I have one named Pierson. LOL
judy3ca - (((nan)))
Michelle/3/OR - Internet for Educators
Sadie T - Nan if he's 16 he'd have been your student about 4 years ago??
naneb - these kids beat a man for his disability check and dumped him in the woods
brad - Okay, just wondering about her. But it says she will be speaking on Ruby Payne's work. Apparently she was around before and is back by popular demand
naneb - I had him 2 years ago when he was in 8th grade
Kim/1/Ca - We have a missing pregnant woman. Missing since Christmas Eve....up in Modesto. Poor Modesto...as if they haven't had enough with the Chandra Levy thing.
cavey - (( Oh naneb!!))
naneb - Oh, I saw that on the news, they haven't found her?
Grace/IL - Kim, I read about that in our paper.
Kim/1/Ca - Ruby Payne certifies her trainers.
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, I've been following that story.
Michelle/3/OR - that was on the news here, too, kim
naneb - 4 kids 2 were 16 and 2 were 18
judy3ca - Kim, one of the teachers at my school (young) was also an intern for Condit.
Michelle/3/OR - I heard they suspect the husband.
Kim/1/Ca - No..they think they found a
Sadie T - Really scary
brad - do you know if there's any way I can check if she's "certified"
naneb - we just do not have serious crime here so it was shocking
Mrs. J - Don't they think the body in the water is her?
Grace/IL - Ours is a 17 year old boy, 11th in a family of 14, who walked out of his house on Dec. 20 and hasn't been seen since.
Kim/1/Ca - "suspicious object" in the Berkley marina, but who knows? And I haven't seen the news yet. I suspect the husband.
Michelle/3/OR - unfortunately, we seem to have a lot of family-killers around here. men who kill their families.
naneb - Kim, I had that same feeling
Mrs. J - News said he was fishing in that marina
Sadie T - I haven't seen the news recently either... don't know.
brad - I wonder. . . when they get caught, do they say, "Eeks!"
judy3ca - Yikes, Michelle, that's terrible!
naneb - sorry to change the subject in here!!
Grace/IL - Michelle, we're reading about those Oregon murders also.
diane - isn't that weird, michelle? it just seems to be getting overwhelming
naneb - LOL!! Brad!! you are the best!!
Kim/1/Ca - Well, Brad, if she is using Ruby Payne's name and materials, she has to be certified. I can ask our local trainer if she knows of her.OR you can go to the website. Aha Process! it is called.
judy3ca - ROFL, Brad!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cavey - Any good news? Economy, Korea, Sadaam?
Glenda 1st TN - Gee, I hope you're wrong about the husband. But with things the way they are today, who knows.
Kim/1/Ca - No, they say, YIKES.
Sadie T - LOL cavey!
brad - ahaprocess.com?
naneb - Judy, have you introduced questioning yet?
Michelle/3/OR - Our news said that their have been 5 cases of it in the past year...and nationwide there are only about 50 cases per year. We definitely have more than our share.
Kim/1/Ca - hang on let me check, brad
judy3ca - nan, nope
diane - the hunters that found the family reported it at a store near my school...our students were interviewed...it's all that our school talked about on tuesday
Grace/IL - We're beginning to sound like the evening newscasts -- all murder and mayhem.
cavey - No, they say @#$%ateil!!
Glenda 1st TN - Sorry Cavey, I'm still pouting because my principal is putting the pressure on us to skip recess.
Kim/1/Ca - www.ahaprocess.com
brad - That's awful too Glenda
brad - thanks kim
judy3ca - Well, here's some news, my ratbabies were still alive as of 5:00 pm today. And they have names...Amber and Essie.
Mrs. J - No recess at all?
Michelle/3/OR - oh....great names, judy!
brad - Murder and Mayhem. Sounds like something Kim and Nan would read by Cornwell
naneb - Judy, I could not believe the difference today, it was like they finally got what I wanted them to do, and that book just fascinated all of them
judy3ca - No recess????????
Michelle/3/OR - I still haven't read that to my class...been meaning to.
Kim/1/Ca - Awwww..........little rat babies.
brad - Instead, how about murder and Mayhem for names, Judy?
Michelle/3/OR - hey there, alta!
cavey - Hi Alta! How's the news in Canada?
judy3ca - Michelle, the kids voted. I voted for India and Opal.
naneb - ewwww!! i don't like rats!! we think we have a rat in our garage
diane - oh, judy, that would have been my choice!
Grace/IL - Judy, now you've found Kim's soft spot.
judy3ca - Brad, this IS California!
Kim/1/Ca - Cletus and Summer.
brad - Rat, Nan? Or mouse?
diane - oh...that actually reminded me of something
Glenda 1st TN - It sure is, Brad, I feel like a heel. On Monday, I gave the class about 20 min of free time in the room beause they had "earned 35" marbles for good behavior. One little boy thanked me for letting them have free time. ugh!
Alta Rose - So hard to choose a colour when you come late.
naneb - rat
naneb - big rat!! I have useless cats!!
Grace/IL - Alta, you look good in soft green
brad - We were heavily leaned on too Glenda, but I decided it was a batlle I choose to fight. So my partner and I defiantly go out every day unless it's raining
Alta Rose - Thanks, Grace. I'm a redhead, so it's my colour. LOL.
Glenda 1st TN - Hi Alta
judy3ca - Alta, I said 'hi' while you were changing clothes. Glad you're here.
Alta Rose - Hi everyone.
Sadie T - You can have whatever COLOUR you want, Alta. We only take all the good COLORS.
diane - one of my kids interrupted my reading today and said, "i'm sorry to interrupt you, but i have to give you a compliment....i love the way you pick out books that are so amazing...and they always seem just like me." i thought that was a great compliment...
Mrs. J - You don't have any recess? Not even after lunch?
cavey - Judy, my son just talked me into two mice. We kept some for the science lab over break, and we are keeping two of the babies
Alta Rose - Hey, Sadie. You spelled COLOUR correctly! LOL!
brad - Mice freak me out Nan. It's funny. I don't know what it is.
Glenda 1st TN - The last time I took them out, We had to write him a letter telling why we went out.
Sadie T - Wow, Diane, that IS a great compliment!
Kim/1/Ca - ((alta)))
naneb - make sure they are not male and female or you will not have 2 mice
judy3ca - Diane, that is wonderful!
Grace/IL - Diane, how nice.
judy3ca - cavey, what did you name them?
naneb - that is great Diane what a pat on the back!!
cavey - Brad, that's why you say eek
Kim/1/Ca - little, itty-bitty twitchy meeses freak you out, brad?
brad - exactly cavey. Mice, brrrr. (give me roaches any day)
Kim/1/Ca - ((((diane))))) how wonderfully cool.....
cavey - Judy, born right before Christmas, so Mistletoe and Holly
naneb - me too brad, I likes snakes and lizards and spiders but I don't do mice and rats!!
brad - There's something about them going up my pant leg or something
diane - brad, mice freak me out too....i had a pet mouse once that started eating its own tail...too gross
Sadie T - (picturing Brad standing on a chair saying "eek") LOL
Glenda 1st TN - Mrs J. NO! The only day I can take them out with his blessings would be Wednesdays. I have two planning periods on T and Th. On Fri and Mon we have gym. He feels that's enough.
brad - am I big and blonde, sadie?
naneb - Brad, that happened to someone I know, a mouse went up one leg and down the other!!
Grace/IL - Mistletoe's a guy and Holly's a girl? Oh, oh!
Michelle/3/OR - well...you can't be worse than my mom....who recently called her very old father while screeching in terror, standing on a chair..because she saw a mouse in her house.
Kim/1/Ca - We were all standing on furniture when a Mojave Green wandered into Chapman a few years back, LOL.....
Glenda 1st TN - I had a mouse hang his leg from my ceiling one day.
brad - glenda, that's what my admin said, "They don't need to go out on days they have gym."
judy3ca - Cute, cavey. My kids have loved having the rats. We've only had two unfortunate incidents. "Oh no Essie's not in the cage!" "Oh no Essie's not breathing!" Both false alarms.
Mrs. J - So the kids eat and then go right back to class? How long do they get?
cavey - I can handle most critters okay
Sadie T - Short, with long blond hair
naneb - uh! Oh!! be prepared for 10 or 12 little babies! before you know it here they are!!
Glenda 1st TN - They just don't get it. Gym is organized. Recess is free social time.
brad - what is a Mojave green?
diane - nothing beats my class @#$%roaches...low maintenance
cavey - Yeah Brad, what do you look like? A guy who says eek and admits he was in a musical, but still is a father, hmmmmm
diane - lol...i forgot it wouldn't let me type that
brad - LOL, Sadie. Before you came in, I was saying how my wife was rolling when I told her your all's schema of me the other day
judy3ca - Not much is green in the Mojave, LOL.
Kim/1/Ca - Do you have Madagascar Hissing @#$%roaches, diane????????
judy3ca - Diane, rofl!
Sadie T - LOL
Glenda 1st TN - Our students get 30 min for lunch and then we pick them up and return to class. One teacher lets them "rest" for about 15 min. I don't.
brad - I'm an equal opportunity gender, cavey
Kim/1/Ca - very true, judy........a very venomous rattlesnake, brad.......two kinds of toxin.
diane - i do, kim, they are fabulous! i wouldn't trade them...my hamsters have all died, but the @#$%roaches keep on hissing
cavey - lol brad!
Sadie T - I figured out why it won't let you type that but lets you type the "a" word...
naneb - we just have Mississippi biggins here!! @#$%roaches that is!
Mrs. J - Why can they "rest" buy recess is banned?
brad - What'd you do, Kim?
Glenda 1st TN - Haven't roaches been around since the dinosaurs?
Kim/1/Ca - I got two from a teacher in Texas.......both escaped and my custodian gave birth to a bovine. I would LOVE to try again.
naneb - what is wrong with recess?
Sadie T - If we couldn't, we'd have to talk about @#*ignments and %!@essments...
Michelle/3/OR - we don't even have anything as large as roaches....we had some free-range ants last year, but I got rid of them
naneb - LOL!!
Glenda 1st TN - The rest time is when she lets them go to the restroom. She has two restroom in her room.
cavey - lol michelle
brad - LOL, free range for tenderness, right Michelle?
Alta Rose - I don't understand how the powers that be can't see that kids (and adults) need their breaks.
diane - lol
Alta Rose - And fresh air and exercise.
Kim/1/Ca - I think the KIDS did something, truly..... Or I had the wrong enclosure. I found them again but they promptly escaped........sigh. Custodian kept saying they were going to meet the heel of his boot.
brad - It's insane Alta, All in the name for increased academic time to pass state tests.
cavey - LOL at Sadie!
naneb - that's like lunch inmiddle school, my principal wants silence, if they are not fairly quiet he will order silent lunch,!
judy3ca - Alta, we actually have Federal laws here that entitle us to a break every 2 hours.
Glenda 1st TN - You've got to remember Alta the powers that be have their "breaks" all day.
Kim/1/Ca - FREE RANGE ants?
Sadie T - Judy, we do??
Michelle/3/OR - wow, judy. I wish we had that.
Mrs. J - Except you lose that time anyway dealing with the problems that come along with not letting kids have run around time!
judy3ca - Now that makes me crazy, Nan, what's wrong with talking at lunch??
brad - judy, my school too!
Glenda 1st TN - Oh, we have silent lunch sometimes too. Even during the week of achievment testing. It is awful.
naneb - no kidding!! the teachers talk at lunch!!
Michelle/3/OR - when I taught 1st grade, I had to teach from 7:50-12:10 with no break. it was so exhausting.
Alta Rose - Right, Mrs. J!
brad - exactly michikim
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, my the Cafeteria Nazis at my school ground the WHOLE TABLE if somebody talks. Real fair, huh?
judy3ca - Sadie, we sure used to...and I'm pretty sure we still do. If you work a 4 hour shift, you're entitled to a 10 minute break.
Michelle/3/OR - that law only applies to hourly employees here.
naneb - when I complained once about being so tired my son said, Mom, you have a planning period, I have 7 straight academic classes!
Glenda 1st TN - I'm very lucky this year. My students get along with each other. In the past I've found if they don't get outside or inside free time they tend to fuss with each other more.
Michelle/3/OR - I used to be in Restaurant Management....and that's the law as I remember
cavey - No lunch duty here, comfortably numb
diane - all of us in the united states have that law...however, it doesn't happen much in schools
Mrs. J - Cafeteria Nazis! LOL! I wonder if they are related to the ones at my school!
diane - oh...maybe you're right, michelle
naneb - that is for hourly employees only, we are not considered hourly, here the aides get two breaks
Michelle/3/OR - I'm sure it only applies to hourly employees.
Sadie T - Oh, that's right. But I think maybe it's just for hourly employees here also?
Alta Rose - Reminds me of Seinfield. "No soup for you!"
judy3ca - Oh, sorry, I'm wrong then. I guess we should just file workman's comp ever time we get bladder infections, then. But we get enough breaks (no more than 2 hours). Someone recognizes the need to use the restroom.
naneb - I don't do lunch duty either
Michelle/3/OR - As a salaried employee, I'm not entitled to it.
brad - All Cafeteria Nazis can be traced back to the same Hair net from Cro-magnon times
Mrs. J - Here in Michigan, we had to give MINORS a break every four hours, but adults were every 8
cavey - Gotta go loves. Need some quality time.
naneb - I have my planning time last block at 1:41
Kim/1/Ca - hear ya, cavey, baby..........
Mrs. J - It was just hourly too
Sadie T - LOL Brad
brad - This isn't quality time, cavey? Eeks!
Mrs. J - Night, Cavey
Glenda 1st TN - bye Cavey
Grace/IL - We're not Quality?
judy3ca - Night, cavey.
Sadie T - Good night Cavey!
Alta Rose - Good night, Cavey.
diane - night cavey
naneb - it is a long day from 8 until 1;41
Alta Rose - brb
Michelle/3/OR - In Oregon, it's a little stricter for minors, too.
Mrs. J - Quality time? What's quality time? LOL
cavey - Night cyberbuds!
Grace/IL - 'Night cavey
brad - I wish I had planning later. i'm first in the morning. Makes the day long. And of course, my afternoons are just downhill
judy3ca - I'm liking my district better and better.
Mrs. J - My Routman and Pressley were both on my doorstep when I got home today.
Kim/1/Ca - One of them just SCREAMED at poor little Christopher today for accidentally TOUCHING two things of french fries when trying to wrestle free ONE. Unbelieveable. I picked up the second one and said, "I'll eat it."
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, I've been out of touch lately. How is the little one?
judy3ca - Lucky you, Mrs. J.
chatroom monitor - It is a long day though Brad, 3 - 90 minute classes straight
brad - fussy, glenda
Mrs. J - We have six 45 minute plannings a week and a 40 minute duty free lunch every day
chatroom monitor - oops!!
Michelle/3/OR - well, when I taught 1st grade, I would have liked an earlier prep time just to break up the morning a bit. I was so tired by 12:10.
brad - Yes, I can see, chatroom monitor. LOL
Glenda 1st TN - Oh, I remember those fussy times. You know from experience it will pass.
judy3ca - Wow, Mrs. J, I take it back about my district--that's a lot of planning time!
Mrs. J - LOL, Nan
Grace/IL - Brad, how were your students after your time away?
naneb - too long I guess!!
Sadie T - LOL
Alta Rose - I envy you, Mrs. J!
naneb - forgot I still had that window open
Kim/1/Ca - <<<sending sympathy to brad
judy3ca - We don't have planning time (unless you count before and after school).
brad - Monday was a bit of a honeymoon Grace. Tuesday, well, okay. Starting Wed, it was all downhill. forgot all rules and procedures
Sadie T - Don't forget Saturdays and Sundays Judy. LOL
naneb - you have students all day long Judy or do they go to specials without you?
Mrs. J - Well, our middle schools and high schools all are on blocks so their teachers get 90 minutes of planning a day plus lunch and us elementary teachers have complained for years
diane - we currently get half an hour a day during specials...but that should end after our ballot measure on the 28th
Grace/IL - They figured our planning time was our lunch hour.
Mrs. J - NO planning time, Judy?
Michelle/3/OR - we have planning time for 40 minutes, each day.
Sadie T - 90 minutes a day???
Grace/IL - Brad, did your sub keep up with your prescribed curriculum?
naneb - I have a 90 minute planning everyday and 2 on some days to do computers and I never get to plan at school!!
Kim/1/Ca - Jeez, Michelle.........40 minutes each day? Wow.....
Michelle/3/OR - we've tried complaining too, but nothing seems to work
Glenda 1st TN - 30 min a day on average. two days a week I get an extra 30
Mrs. J - 90 minutes--they teach three blocks and have one off
brad - are you kidding Grace? I returned to school to find two stacks of paper, each three inches thick and at least half were coloring sheets
Sadie T - I have 45 minutes a day
Mrs. J - Don't you guys have a union?
brad - I have 45 minutes a day
naneb - I never go in the teacher's lounge and I never have time to sit around
Michelle/3/OR - sound like your kids had an early vacation, brad
Mrs. J - Gee, and the sub saved them for you to grade, Brad? Or did he think you could put them in the portfolio to show their great progress?
Glenda 1st TN - What good is a union in Tn. We can't strike.
Sadie T - Nan, same here
naneb - that is what I do but Mrs. J we have meetings almost everyday, team meetings, parent conferences, faculty meetings, committee meetings, all during that 90 minutes
Michelle/3/OR - maybe the sub didn't know where your Coloring rubric was?
brad - I can tolerate the color by numbers where they had to at least solve the basic fact to find the number to color by, but the Clifford sheets were ridiculous
Michelle/3/OR - so left them for you?
Grace/IL - So now you have to start back where you left off and put them through the paces double time.
Mrs. J - We can't strike either, Glenda, but we have it pretty good
Sadie T - Brad, remember when your kids were asking when they would get to color? You could've said "when the sub is here."
Kim/1/Ca - I get an hour on Friday afternoon. BUT, I have to go transfer my kids from computer to library and it is a 5 minute walk each way. So....I get two 20 minute sessions.
diane - lol, michelle...
judy3ca - Mrs. J--no, but we have very short teaching days.
brad - lol sadie
brad - That's bad, all of you who don't have planning. I'd die without mine. I need that break
judy3ca - Sadie, rofl
brad - my kids are intense
Glenda 1st TN - I'm just grumpy to night Mrs. J. I have it pretty good at my school. My school system is pretty good to considering others in TN.
Kim/1/Ca - But we are all going to be hurting with our illustrious idiot governor cutting education funding AGAIN. We will probably lose our computer/library people.
naneb - I have an extra planning time on some days to work on computers, I usually spend almost all of my time at school doing computer stuff and sometimes Saturdays too
Sadie T - We get 45 minutes but sometimes they call 5 minutes before it starts to ask us to sub for someone... hate that (expecting to have time to plan, suddenly it's gone)
brad - so you DO have a union, glenda?
Glenda 1st TN - Oops. "pretty good too"
Alta Rose - Are your librarians also teachers?
Alta Rose - Ours isn't.
brad - ours isn't alta.
Michelle/3/OR - our librarian is certified...but in many districts here they aren't
Kim/1/Ca - No. Classified staff, alta rose. We will lose some of them, including noon duty people, which means having lunch/recess duty.
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, we have an association.
brad - Sadie, I think that happens mostly in middle and high school. It happened to me when i subbed. I resented it. Thought they were taking advantage of subs. Never subbed there again.
Glenda 1st TN - They bargin for our contract.
Grace/IL - I was reading somewhere about teaching inner city kids. The item had to do with learning their language, teaching them to write it, then moving toward standard English (if there is such a thing).
Michelle/3/OR - when i was a sub in Portland, it was written in our sub contract that we would NOT be called to sub for another teacher during our prep hour.
naneb - you have aides who do duty, that is not allowed here, must be teachers
Alta Rose - We lost our P.E. teachers this year. I have to teach P.E. for first time ever.
Mrs. J - I hate when that happens. I lost my connection
naneb - Grace, there is a good program about that called Teach Standard Too, it teaches kids when to use both languages
Michelle/3/OR - I would hate having to teach PE...as I mentioned last week.
naneb - Grace, there is a good program about that called Teach Standard Too, it teaches kids when to use both languages
Sadie T - Brad, high school teacher's perspective on that... subs don't NEED the planning time, teachers do!
Michelle/3/OR - we have aides who do duty, but there must be certified staff there too.
Sadie T - I know, it would be good for subs to have that time, but still...
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, nan, and that is as it should be. Teachers should not have to do duty, period. It SHOULD be a classified staff job.
Alta Rose - Michelle, I hate having an extra thing to plan, and the fact I've lost prep time, but actually enjoy the time in the gym with the kids.
brad - I agree, but to me, we're going back to that idea of a mandated break time for hourly employees
Mrs. J - I missed Judy's answer to how short her day was
Grace/IL - It made a lot of sense. Kids learned to respect the teachers that honored their language.
Sadie T - if the choice is between a sub having that 45 minutes, or a teacher having it, I think the teacher can use it better
naneb - all of the teachers at my school do duty, I have car rider duty afterschool
Michelle/3/OR - as a sub in Portland, it was nice to be part of the teachers' union
Alta Rose - We have to do supervision, too.
judy3ca - Sorry, I was on the phone and didn't answer. Kids only there from 8:15 until 2:00--too short.
Glenda 1st TN - Nan, do you have car duty everyday?
naneb - everyday!
brad - that is short Judy. Daughter's day is 8:00-2:40
Mrs. J - That's ok, Judy I lost my internet connection and had to sign back on--thought I missed it!
naneb - it is easy duty though, much better than lunch duty
Glenda 1st TN - Yuck, we have morning bus duty and afternoon bus duty for one week every 6 weeks.
Michelle/3/OR - all the classroom teachers have bus duty every day at our school
brad - do you get paid any extra for that nan?
Mrs. J - Our day (kids) is 8:15-3:21
judy3ca - Right, Brad, I'd love a longer day!
Michelle/3/OR - our day is 7:50-2:25
brad - That's long, michikim. Ours is 9:20-3:20
naneb - are you kidding! nope, it is just part of the job, other teachers have morning duty or lunch duty or bus duty
Michelle/3/OR - oh...I'd love to work at a school that started later, brad. I hate mornings
naneb - Ours for kids is 8:05 - 3:19
judy3ca - Brad, why do you start so late?
Sadie T - Nan, are you at a small school?
naneb - 800 and some students
Mrs. J - Did you notice the 1 in 3:21? Isn't that stupid? It wasn't a typo!
brad - All we have is recess duty, and of course, if we choose not to take them out. . . and if you have some other duty (buses, or such) you get paid a stipend
Glenda 1st TN - teachers 7:15 until 3:00 students 7:30 til 2:35 for shuttle buses, 2:45 car riders and 3:00 for late bus riders
Mrs. J - Ok, Nan's 3:19 is just as stupid
Michelle/3/OR - my high school got out at 2:41
Kim/1/Ca - My kids start showing up at 8:05 or so..NO AIDE ON DUTY so I have to keep them in my room. Which is okay........I put them to work. They get out at 2:40 but we keep them in the room until they call for each bus. So, the last group doesn't leave until 2:50 or so.
Mrs. J - We do playground duty one morning a week from 8-8:15
brad - Large district, Judy. Three tiers of elementary schools for transportation reasons. We have 30 or so elementaries
Sadie T - We get out at 2:42
Michelle/3/OR - wow, I wish we got a stipend for bus duty.
judy3ca - Kim, I always have kids in my room, LOL.
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, with a 6 hour day, lunch and specials how do you get it all in?
judy3ca - Ah, Brad, got it.
diane - that is a large district, brad
brad - Frequently I don't, Glenda, to be honest
Glenda 1st TN - I can imagine, I have 7 hours and there are days I find I've just run out of time.
judy3ca - I don't fit it all in either, Glenda. I don't even try.
Alta Rose - Kim, our school won't allow kids before supervisors are on duty.
brad - We've always been a "late" school. I think it's one of the reasons we have such horrible afternoons. It's too late for kids. Most of them have been up taking care of themselves for hours before they even come, because parents work at 7-3 kinds of jobs.
Mrs. J - Well, and there's all those other interruptions too.
naneb - I get to school by 7:15 and leave about 4;30 or 5:00 and I still am not done with everything
Glenda 1st TN - What do you leave out?
Sadie T - Alta how can they keep kids away?
brad - Usually soc and sci get the short shrift
Grace/IL - Glenda, in IL, the school day must be 5 hours -- definitely not enough time but 7 hours -- Wow!
Kim/1/Ca - Well, they all show up around the same time because of buses. They go to breakfast and then come to the room. They can't go play because there is no supervision on the yard. No playground equipment, anyway.
Mrs. J - We don't "allow" kids before supervisors are on duty. But they start arriving at 7:15 even though breakfast doesn't start until 8
Sadie T - I get to school at 6:45... keep my door locked until 7:30 or else students would come in at 7!
Alta Rose - We just tell them supervisors aren't on playground until 8:25 and that's when they come.
Michelle/3/OR - I have been leaving "on time" this week in order to go work out at the gym...but that means I'll be spending lots of my weekend at school.
diane - okay all...i'm headed out. gotta go to bed...yep, it's only 9:00
judy3ca - Oh, now, my hours are a whole new subject, nan. I get to work between 6-6:30 and leave at 4-5:00. Plus I ususally work one weekend day.
naneb - night diane
Glenda 1st TN - I know it sounds like a long day, But I really wish I had them longer.
diane - night all
brad - Our day technically doesn't end until 3:40, but again, with all the 7-3 jobs, many kids start getting picked up and then buses start coming, so you have to be ready to go by about 3:10, which cuts the day even further
Alta Rose - Oh, our buses don't get there until we have a supervisor.
judy3ca - Night, diane
Sadie T - good night diane!
Grace/IL - 'night, Diane
Alta Rose - night diane.
Glenda 1st TN - Night Diane
naneb - morning duty teachers are on duty at 7:35
judy3ca - We haven't had buses for years!
naneb - how do kids get to school, car?
Alta Rose - Ouch! That's so early, nan!
Sadie T - No buses Judy? Do all your kids live learn the school?
Sadie T - Oops... do they live near the school?
Mrs. J - Our kids walk or are dropped off
Michelle/3/OR - all our kids ride busses, even those that live just down the road. Busy street/ no sidwalk
judy3ca - Car, walk, bikes.
brad - We just canceled deseg, Judy, so we will gradually have less and less bussing as we take in more and more neighborhood kids
judy3ca - There hasn't been money for buses for ages.
Michelle/3/OR - where I went to elementary school, all the kids walked to school.
judy3ca - We don't have buses for trips either.
Alta Rose - Uphill both ways, Michelle?]
Sadie T - Judy, what do you do if you go on a trip?
naneb - do you have to charter a bus?
judy3ca - LOL, Alta.
Glenda 1st TN - I'm a country girl. We have to have buses.
brad - Cars sadie
Alta Rose - Same here. Lots of country kids.
judy3ca - Sadie, we have to arrange for parents to drive.
Michelle/3/OR - no, it was flat. the best part was, there was a Mini-Mart along the way. Bought lots of penny candy.
Kim/1/Ca - We are talking about extending our day and changing to a 4 day week. I don't know if it will fly. We have to cut massive amounts of money, thanks to the idiot governor.
Glenda 1st TN - Cars? Are you joking Brad????
Mrs. J - We can't have parents drive or use our own cars. Has to be a bus
naneb - we cannot use cars for field trips big no-no!
Kim/1/Ca - cutting a day will save energy costs plus transportation and classified costs.
brad - Sometimes I think I'd like to try that Kim.
Michelle/3/OR - In Portland, we took kids on field trips in cars. In my current district, that isn't allowed.
Mrs. J - LOL, Kim. I love hearing you talk about your governor. He sounds like our exited governor
Sadie T - Kim, you're changing to 4 days a week and your students are going to FLY? And Judy doesn't even have money for busses..
Alta Rose - Kim, we extended our day, and get about 1 Friday off per month in compensation.
Grace/IL - Kim, there are only four states that don't have financial difficulties at the moment. Everyone is talking cuts.
naneb - we were going to have early release on Wednesday, I don't know why the school board did not approve it
Sadie T - Mrs. J., now you know where he went.
brad - I don't use cars for field trips in this district. But in the district where I did long-term assignment, we did
Alta Rose - Compressed calendar, they call it. Parents voted for it.
judy3ca - LOLOL, Sadie!
Mrs. J - LOL, Sadie!
naneb - brb
Michelle/3/OR - what are the 4 states?
Glenda 1st TN - Oh, the teachers hear thought we were getting a few 1/2 days off to compensate for the built in snow days that we never use. Come to find out the students go home but the teachers have to stay for inservice.
judy3ca - Nan, we used to have early release Wednesdays and then the staff voted it out.
brad - Nan, we had early dismissal one day a month last year for prof development, and guess what? That was the day TEACHERS missed, not students. So no go this year
Mrs. J - We used to have early release on Mondays for team planning. Went away a few years ago
Grace/IL - Can't remember, but there are supposed to be four.
judy3ca - Brad, LOLOL. We have a staff dev day coming up week after next. I was surprised to find out today that I'm in charge of a session.
brad - Well apparently my state has hopped on board early with NCLB accountability laws (guffaw)
Michelle/3/OR - we have early release wednesdays once per month
Mrs. J - Thinking of moving Michelle!?
Glenda 1st TN - So, Judy, what are you going to do?
Michelle/3/OR - this month the inservice is going to feature my classroom and my friend's classroom on video.
Kim/1/Ca - Just being discussed at this point. We don't know if he will whack us midyear again, (so he could inflate his bureacracy by 40,000 jobs). I think CTA should put out a contract on him. the jerk.
judy3ca - I wrote our governor begging him to keep the staff dev money and let us keep CSR.
Mrs. J - I'm doing two sessions at our pd in February. Have no idea on what yet!
Michelle/3/OR - you never know, Mrs. j.
Alta Rose - What are you presenting, judy?
judy3ca - Glenda, Writer's Workshop conferences.
Grace/IL - If our legislators would cut out the pork, like grants for skateboard ramps, there might be money for shools..
brad - That would be Kim's governor too, right Judy? LOL
Sadie T - LOL Judy. Why didn't they think of that?
naneb - we used a prof development day for hurricane makeup so we have to make up the time, we can use almost any extra time we spend so I am going to go on Satuday
Kim/1/Ca - You WROTE to our idiot governor, Judy?
brad - Hurricane Makeup? By Revlon?
judy3ca - I did, Kim, aren't you proud of me?
Glenda 1st TN - Sounds good Judy
Mrs. J - And why are there all these tax cuts if we don't have enough money to pay for things as it is?
naneb - Isidore, Brad!!
brad - Is a door what, Nan?
judy3ca - Glenda, fortunately I just went to a workshop on conferences about a month ago.
brad - Who's on first?
Kim/1/Ca - Federal Tax cuts.......but Idiot J. Davis is INCREASING taxes in California to pay for HIS mistakes.
Sadie T - Is Adore, Brad - the new makeup by Revlon
Grace/IL - I'm proud of you, Judy. The squeky wheel gets the grease. Teachers SHOULD be writing letters to legislators.
Alta Rose - LOL!
judy3ca - Kim, what kind of taxes are increasing. If you say property taxes, listen for the screaming.
Mrs. J - Yah, but if the feds don't need it, why can't they trickle it down to the states to help pay for this idiotic NCLB?
Michelle/3/OR - and you have How's It Going....have you started it yet, judy?
Grace/IL - Sounds like IL, Kim
Glenda 1st TN - Grace, there is waste everywhere. Our system spends money on adopting science textbooks for K-5 and they fund hands on science kits for these grades. We have 4 to 5 kits per grade level. The kits last 6 weeks each. No way can you get it all in.
judy3ca - Thanks, Glenda--that's very nice.
brad - because our pres is shtoopid and just like his father, michikim. he'll do anything to make himself look good. Just like his father. (No my politics aren't showing)
Kim/1/Ca - Oh, no, Judy.....he wants to increase INCOME tax AND sales taxes........again.
Michelle/3/OR - do kids in CA still go to 2-yr colleges for free?
brad - we have those kits, glenda. We raid the consumabales and send the rest back. Everyone does it.
naneb - Judy, we are writing nonfiction next week! kids started research this week and will begin writing next week
judy3ca - Michelle, I've read the intro, I have to have 80 pages read by Monday when I meet with my study partner--we're "doing" the book.
Kim/1/Ca - FREE?
Sadie T - NO MICHELLE!
Mrs. J - We have AWESOME science kits. That's all we use for science. No textbooks
Alta Rose - Did they at one time, Michelle?
judy3ca - My daughter's state college tuition just went up in response to this--they wanted $58 additional for this quarteer.
Michelle/3/OR - OK...I'm on page 44.
Kim/1/Ca - I have to shell out another $72, Judy.......AFTER I sent in the big bucks, of course.
Mrs. J - I thought there was a CA university that offered free tuition to residents
Grace/IL - In IL, they promised the lottery money for education. Put it there but then took what was previously allotted into the general fund so no gain.
Kim/1/Ca - Sure like to know which university offered that, Other Kim.
judy3ca - Michelle, I should be reading it right now, LOL.
Glenda 1st TN - I'm afraid I did that up until about 2 years ago. The person in charge of the kits is at our school now. If we don't have all the little goodies out word gets around. I usually manage to reduce the kits to 10 days.
Michelle/3/OR - yeah...if you were a california citizen, you could go to 2-yr community college for free
naneb - my son goes to community college for $550 a semester and that includes books!!
judy3ca - No way, Mrs. J.
Mrs. J - I don't even want to think about tuition! I finished my masters two summers ago, but will need to start taking classes again soon. We need 6 credits every 4 or 5 years
Sadie T - I think some used to be free but not anymore...
Kim/1/Ca - Same here, Grace. And if I hear, "What do you guys do with all that lottery money" ONE MORE TIME I will screeeeeeeeeem.
Grace/IL - Georgia uses lottery money wisely -- provides Hope scholarships for all students with B averages.
Michelle/3/OR - well, be sure to let me know what you are thinking.judy
brad - Oh, I hear you all on the lottery, Kim
Kim/1/Ca - That's about what Community College costs here, naneb........
judy3ca - Yes, Sadie, I think the community colleges were intended to be free.
naneb - it is the best buy in education
brad - Glenda, the kits are okay, I guess, but time is a factor.
Mrs. J - We use our tobacco settlement money to provide scholarships for all the kids who do well on our high stakes tests
Kim/1/Ca - And I am surrounded by people who pool their money and buy a grip of tickets.....hoping for the big one.
Sadie T - So when do you think they'll start having to pay tuition for high school? LOL
Glenda 1st TN - TN just voted to change our state const. to allow a lottery. I'm sure they will manage to mess it up. But then miracles still happen, don't they?
judy3ca - Michelle, I will. I really liked seeing him speak and I'm doing some of his recommendations in class. Doesn't he talk about a teaching point early in the book?
Michelle/3/OR - wow, nan....I just paid $582 for one class...without books. master's classes...why are they so expensive?
Kim/1/Ca - Idiot J. Davis signed away all of our tobacco money. (my blood pressure is going up)
naneb - my masters classes were almost that much too
Grace/IL - Michikim, that sounds great. On the other hand, it still disenfranchises slower students -- same in GA..
brad - depends onprivate or public school, michelle, how expensive it is
Kim/1/Ca - When@#$%freezes over, Sadie. Can you imagine?
Mrs. J - Grace, there was a proposal on the November ballot to do away with the scholarships but it was defeated
judy3ca - Well, since I have to get up early to go see Linda Hoyt, I'd better be singing off. Good night, friends.
naneb - my masters degree was free, because I am in special ed
Michelle/3/OR - Yeah...I even took the book to school with me today, judy, so that I could remember some of the suggestions he gives.
naneb - bye Judy
Kim/1/Ca - I can't concentrate anymore. I'm sorry. I gotta go.
Sadie T - You guys aren't going to believe this... I've been wondering ALL WEEK why they keep calling her "Michikim"... I *just now* remembered why!
brad - But Judy, you're tuneless. You can't sing off!
Grace/IL - 'night, Judy
Mrs. J - Night Judy
Glenda 1st TN - G'ngiht Judy
Sadie T - Good night Judy!
Alta Rose - Enjoy, judy!
Michelle/3/OR - this is a public school, brad! private is probably even more
Sadie T - Nan why was your masters free because you're in special ed?
Glenda 1st TN - Cute Brad
Kim/1/Ca -
judy3ca - ROFL, Brad--good one! Michelle, remind me later (prof board) to tell you what I've been doing with Anderson's ideas. Night!
Grace/IL - I'm wearing thin, too. It's 11:20 here.
naneb - Yes Sadie
brad - Yes, Judy do post on that for me too. NIGhT
Kim/1/Ca - Say good night, Gracie.
Michelle/3/OR - ok...goodnight, judy
brad - Grace, good night
brad - Later Kim
naneb - Good Night Grace
Sadie T - Good night Grace!
Alta Rose - Goodnight Grace and Kim.
Grace/IL - 'Night, Kim -- night, Gracie
brad - Long week?
Mrs. J - Night Grace
Michelle/3/OR - actually, I will actually get my master's paid for ....about 85%
Glenda 1st TN - night Grace Say good night to George too
naneb - Brad, I am going to start the Rewards program with my 6th graders, my 8th graders are doing phenomenally with it so I figure I will do the same for the 6th graders
brad - That's great nan.
Mrs. J - I was fortunate. Mine was 100% (Not including books). There is a scholarship to the Western Michigan's satellite center. Once I paid, I was reimbursed if I got a 3.0 or better
Michelle/3/OR - a friend of mine asked for a book recommendation about severly behavior problem kids in the classroom....any suggestions?
brad - I'm just kind've throwing a lot of things out there right now hoping to design something more formal as things stick
brad - life of a newbie
Sadie T - Brad, are you using Rewards too?
naneb - michelle, I had some classes that were not sped classes but Mississippi has a teacher loan program, you can apply for and if you teach in the state the next year you don't have to
Michelle/3/OR - any class that is computer, reading, writing, or ESOL related is 100% paid for. My other classes are 75% paid by district
brad - the grade thing is really making me nervous
naneb - pay it back
brad - rewards wont work for mine. second grade
Sadie T - Wow, Michelle, that's great!
Sadie T - Right Brad
Michelle/3/OR - I seriously work in one of the best districts around here, I think
brad - esp. for soc and sci and HEALTH!
naneb - we have started the sentence and passage reading and my lowest student, reading level mid 2nd reads his sentences with no errors!
Sadie T - I really want to use it with mine but I don't think they know enough of the words
brad - What Nan showed me looks good
naneb - I was not going to use it for the same reason but i think we can work on that as we go along
Michelle/3/OR - we don't have to teach health in the classroom, the PE teacher teaches it.
brad - I just think you do have to keep it grounded in text and authenticity.
Mrs. J - Same here, Michelle
Sadie T - I was thinking the same thing Nan... just focus on the words they know and maybe try to add some easier words that fit the pattern if I could think of any
brad - There is a danger in it being a worksheet approach
naneb - I am so impressed with it, the passage we read this week was about colonization and slavery, like from a 9th grade histroy book, they read with almost no errors and good fluency
Sadie T - Nan that's terrific@
Michelle/3/OR - I still haven't figured out how to record my observation records into the gradebook.
brad - michelle? explain. . .
naneb - Rewards is almost all oral, and it teaches this strategy and then they practice
Michelle/3/OR - what? health?
brad - No, the observation records into gradebook problem
Michelle/3/OR - the PE teacher is required to teach the health curriculum, as well as PE.
Alta Rose - We have to teach health, but it tends to get put on the backburner.
Michelle/3/OR - Oh....some of the things our report card covers...I can get grades pretty well by reading my records that I've made over the term. But...
Michelle/3/OR - I don't see how I can, or could, record a grade each week based on those notes.
naneb - I am thinking of having my sub do book groups while I am gone and using the question web and other ways for kids to document their questions, do you think a sub could do this?
brad - Exactly my issue, Michelle. What do you think of having a rubric to translate those notes into a grade?
Michelle/3/OR - and when I have parent conferences, those notes are very helpful. I often share them with the parents
naneb - do you have to do numbergrades?
Sadie T - Nan do the kids know how to do it well?
Glenda 1st TN - Nan, just get Brad's sub and they can color if she can't figure it out.
Michelle/3/OR - nan, when do you leave? I've been thinking about you, lucky thing
brad - Mine have to be numbers.
Michelle/3/OR - number grades...yep
naneb - we have done book clubs but we are just starting questioning
Alta Rose - LOL, Glenda!
brad - depends on the type of subs you have nan. In my district, it's an emphatic no
naneb - I am thinking of making a checklist from the rubric and the nassigning point values to each area
Sadie T - I have to go, so, good night!
naneb - 21st
Michelle/3/OR - the thing with a rubric....well, I guess I'd have to streamline my notes more.
naneb - bye Sadie
Mrs. J - Night, Sadie
Alta Rose - Goodnight, Sadie.
brad - nite sadie. tell me more nan
Glenda 1st TN - Nan, what reading series do you use?
Mrs. J - I think I'm going to go too. My daughter has an early hockey game
naneb - I have the sub I want lined up, plus I will have my student teacher
Alta Rose - I have a question about Sensory Imagery.
naneb - no series, but trade books
Glenda 1st TN - Sorry, I should be asking Michelle, she is the one asking about the grades.
naneb - about what brad?
Michelle/3/OR - for instance...we have to give a grade on how well the students use the writing process...I can give a grade pretty well by seeing how he/she has used the process over the course of the term...but over the course of a week? not sure
brad - night michikim
brad - anbout the chekclist
brad - lol, i'm going soon too
Mrs. J - Night everyone
Glenda 1st TN - Night
Mrs. J - Don't stay up too late! I'm expecting 50 messages by noon, as usual
Michelle/3/OR - I think it's weird to have to score the writing process on a 1-6 scale
brad - What kind of criteria defines "using the process WELL" Michelle?
Alta Rose - I have done lots of reading to the kids, and they have done TONS of discussing, drawing, acting out the pictures in their heads, but how do I make sure now that they transfer that to the text they read?
naneb - here are my thoughts, i will list all of the things I expect the student to do and know during reading, and assign points to each area, then check them off during a conference with the student
Michelle/3/OR - my son has a basketball game tomorrow morning....thansk for remindingme
brad - Okay, Nan, now I get it. Check out that rubric I gave you that you posted for ideas there
Michelle/3/OR - Brad, I'm not sure that's been clearly defined across the district. It's pretty subjective.
brad - It sounds like you and Michelle and myself need to hash this out for each other and use the plan
naneb - I had forgotten all about it, I can probably modify it and use it for my checklist
Michelle/3/OR - do you do reading conferences with your students, alta? that would be a good time
naneb - have them do the same thing with their book and then share the results
Alta Rose - Yes, Michelle.
brad - To me, it might mean, the student understands all the parts and sees the value in each and uses them when necessary. Like you wouldn't score someone real high who still rarely goes back to revise
Alta Rose - Do you find that when they read their own books that the illustrations interfer with their ability to create their own visual images?
Alta Rose - Good ideas, nan and Michelle.
brad - Grades are such a bugaboo for me
Michelle/3/OR - yeah, brad. I agree. But...you see, it's hard to say over the course of one week, right?
naneb - I can't wait to do SI, that will be fun to teach
Alta Rose - I love it, nan!
brad - Exactly. One week is a short cycle. Especially for something like reading and writing
Michelle/3/OR - I ended SI reading the Nutcracker....that was awesome.
Alta Rose - It was wonderful to do at Christmas, with all the Christmas poetry.
Alta Rose - Somebody posted about using Nutcracker on mosaicteachers. Sounded great
brad - Oh well, I need to go. I do want to mull this over more on the board, so if you all do anything concerning it, let me know
naneb - I loved the poem Sharon sent to the list today, I will use it for SI, my kids were so fascinated by the paintings in Angel for Solomon Singer that I think we will do a study of illustrators next
Alta Rose - I haven't seen that yet, nan.
Alta Rose - I'm ready to go on to questioning, but I want to keep reviewing SI or my kids will forget, I'm afraid.
Michelle/3/OR - I had to delete over 100 posts from the list recently...I got so behind I just couldn't catch up.
naneb - They had so many questions about the illustrations,
Michelle/3/OR - hate missing something good.
naneb - you can go to the website and read them too
Alta Rose - I know what you mean, Michelle. It's hard to keep up!
Michelle/3/OR - I've started Sharon's phrase "let the questions live!"
Michelle/3/OR - because my kids kept trying to answer the questions I was modeling.
Alta Rose - Yeah, that's great, Michelle!
Glenda 1st TN - Ladies, I hate to leave good company, but I guess I better turn in. I has been a long day.
naneb - today, my kids really understood how questions could help them understand, they were on fire with questions
naneb - nite Glenda
Glenda 1st TN - Good night
Alta Rose - Take Care, Glenda!
Alta Rose - That's wonderful, nan!
Michelle/3/OR - and in science, we had listed a bunch of questions the kids had about the ocean...and as a few started interrupting with their answers, the kids I have during reading were saying "let the questions live!"
naneb - I was getting discouraged that I was doing something wrong and then Wow! today they got it
Alta Rose - Michelle, I did "Hello Ocean" for SI. It was terrific!
Michelle/3/OR - nan, did you just start questioning?
naneb - yes
naneb - we had done Fly Away Home and The Lotus Seed lesson
Michelle/3/OR - me too...on Weds. how much time do you plan to be spending on it?
Michelle/3/OR - I've done Grandfather Twilight, Brave Irene, and...I can't remember. I checked out a bunch of Bunting for later.
naneb - I am not sure, my kids are not used to thinking at all, I am gone so much in the next few weeks that I will rpobably do it through February in some form or another
naneb - I am gone to London and then back 1 week and then go to Nashville
Michelle/3/OR - the title one teacher is going longer into Questioning than she originally planned to. Many of her kids aren't used to thinking either.
Alta Rose - When do you leave, nan?
naneb - week from Tuesday, 21
Michelle/3/OR - when are you leaving for London? End of January?
naneb - we were planning tonight, that is almost as much fun as going on the trip
Alta Rose - I'll bet you're excited!
naneb - it was so much fun today seeing them light up with ideas
Michelle/3/OR - how exciting...when I went to London, I sent postcards to each of my students. of course, some didn't get them until after I returned.
naneb - One boy said he couldn't see the picture and I told him to get a chair and come close, so everyone came close and I think that really helped all of them
naneb - I am taking a digital camera and making a powerpoint travelogue
Alta Rose - That will be great, nan!
Michelle/3/OR - well...it's time for me to go....almost 10:00
Alta Rose - Well, I think I am going to call it a night. Take Care!
naneb - I am yawning too
good teacher - hey
Michelle/3/OR - basketball game in the morning....see you later.
naneb - bye Michelle
