teach/3/ca - Hi everyone. Have enjoyed the chatboard so thought I'd try this tonight
judy3ca - Kathy, are you done yet? I have another week.
teach/3/ca - I have three more days but am moving classrooms. I am trying to pack and maintain control in clssroom
judy3ca - teach, I guess we both teach 3rd grade in CA--something in common?
teach/3/ca - Judy, where are you in California?
judy3ca - Moving is so hard!
kathyb1stia - I was done last Thursday, work day on Friday. This week I taught TAG math to 5 to be 1st and 2 to be 3 for 2 1/2 hours each AM.
judy3ca - I teach in Walnut Creek--northern CA, do you know it? Where are you?
teach/3/ca - I am in southern Calif. Castaic near Magic Mountain
judy3ca - Oh, my roomie from college (UCLA) wound up in Valencia for a while.
kathyb1stia - I moved buildings ONCE... 137 assorted containers... LOL!
judy3ca - And I'm from Manhattan Beach, near L.A.
judy3ca - Hi nan!!!! So glad to "see" you!
teach/3/ca - I haven't counted...don't think i want to
teach/3/ca - Question...Everyone on the board seems to be influencing others on their staff. Did that come quickly or take awhile?
naneb/6sped - and I am from Mississippi, on the coast
Glenda 1st TN - Kathy, I'll try to email that attachment again tomorrow.
judy3ca - teach, what a good question. My Lit Coach wants me to influence more, but we're trying to do it without being annoying, LOL.
kathyb1stia - WHOA, I don't think that I am influencing anyone on my staff. Sure wish I was that lucky.
teach/3/ca - I have been doing Reader's workshop and using MOT, not 100%, but get little support. Administration seems to like the teachers that do "story a week and workbooks
judy3ca - Hi Brad soon to be 2
Brad/3 - well, well, well, quite an active few days on the board
naneb/6sped - I think if people see and hear what is happening pretty soon they start asking questions and then you have them
Brad/3 - Kim, you sly dog, you
Kim/K/SCa - I see chicken tracks....BRAD must be here. Cheep cheep..........
Brad/3 - hey kathy, are you thundering kathy?
Kim/K/SCa - I am a sly dog........huh?
teach/3/ca - Nan, that is what I am hoping...need to take what judy said also...without being annoying
judy3ca - teach, and I've had a LOT of teachers observing my class this year.
teach/3/ca - NOpe Brad, California perhaps
Brad/3 - been doing a lot of MOT reading past few days, Kim
teach/3/ca - Judy, how long have you been teaching?
naneb/6sped - I have even had teachers want to know what my kids are talking about
Kim/K/SCa - New principal wants me to lead a book study..........!!!
Brad/3 - A lot in Cali?
judy3ca - This is my 16th year.
kathyb1stia - Yep, I am THUNDERING Kathy and Kim and Glenda have kept me ROARING lately.
naneb/6sped - California is too far for me, maybe somewhere in between
judy3ca - What about you, teach?
Brad/3 - Kim, congrats.
Brad/3 - what book?
teach/3/ca - Congrats to Kim
Kim/K/SCa - The Ruby Payne book..........of all things.
Brad/3 - me too, nan, you're closer to me. I'm OH
kathyb1stia - I love all of the metaphor posts. They make me ROAR a Thundering Laugh, too!
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, What book does he have in mind?
judy3ca - What are we congratulating you for, Kim?
teach/3/ca - This is my 4th year in public...I had two years in private
Glenda 1st TN - Oops, I'm a little slow
Brad/3 - Ah, metaphors. Will Jan be here with the ragout?
judy3ca - She'd better be....I have the frosting!
Kim/K/SCa - BRB......mail call here......
naneb/6sped - this was my 10th year teaching with 6 more as an aide in sped
Karla/6 - Kim - Tell me more about organizing a book study.
Brad/3 - Kim, you get your mail this late?
teach/3/ca - This chatboard saved my sanity when I felt like I was the only one at my school to believe this way. That's why I had to start participating
kathyb1stia - Hey, Kim, we did a Ruby Payne Book Study with old principal -- after hours for credit
Brad/3 - Judy, I'm knitting the sweater
naneb/6sped - me too, teach
teach/3/ca - Might be lame ? but who is Ruby Payne?
Brad/3 - me too teach.
Glenda 1st TN - teach, I'm soooo glad you asked. I have no idea either.
teach/3/ca - LOL glenda
Brad/3 - brb.... drinks calling
judy3ca - Brad, ROFLOL.
Kim/K/SCa - GUESS WHAT!!!! Danny got housing in Chico...................WHEW!!!!
Karla/6 - ditto Glenda...I just thought I would wait until others asked.
judy3ca - Hooray for Danny! We now know our daughter will have housing at SLO, too, but only for 1 year.
Brad/3 - hello drinks
kathyb1stia - Ruby Payne wrote a book on Poverty and educating those from a different economic group.
Brad/3 - gulp gulp gulp
Kim/K/SCa - So my boy is going to the university and he doesn't have to sleep on the streets.........
teach/3/ca - Thanks kathy
Brad/3 - different econ group from self--like rich teaching poor?
Karla/6 - thanks Kathy
Kim/K/SCa - Pass me a managrita, Brad..............
kathyb1stia - YEAH for Danny!
Brad/3 - But, Kim, sleeping on streets is so character-building.
Brad/3 - what does Ruby Payne say?
kathyb1stia - More than rich teaching poor. Differences from generational poverty and situational poverty...
Kim/K/SCa - The Ruby Payne book discusses the differences in "values" placed upon education by different classes. Rich, middle class, poverty.
Karla/6 - returning to book studies...anyone have tips for organization...rules of the road, etc?
Brad/3 - Kim, LOL, it's been SUCH a week and I haven't even written you. It is a LONG LONG story properly told. Luckily, you already know some of it.
judy3ca - Karly, do you mean book studies with other teachers?
Brad/3 - sounds intereseting, Kathy, do you have a title
Karla/6 - Kim...I am a little in the dark, I am assuming Danny is your son and Chico is Chicago?
Karla/6 - , yes.
Brad/3 - Chico is the Man
Kim/K/SCa - I'm sorry Karla. You don't have any background info here..............
kathyb1stia - Yes, the staff that wanted had the book study lead by principal for graduate credit, if desired.
Karla/6 - oops...now I am really lost!
kathyb1stia - Ruby Payne explains vocabulary and value differences.
Glenda 1st TN - I'd be interested in the same info Karla asked about.
Brad/3 - ignore me karla
Kim/K/SCa - I live in SoCal. My son, Danny, is 20 and will be transferring to Cal State Chico in August. He is a criminal justice major. WE have been waiting to hear about housing.
kathyb1stia - Our school's family tree is very, very intertwined.
Brad/3 - glenda, your orange frightened me, I forgot you were here
judy3ca - I can talk about book studies if you mean with colleagues (not kids).
Brad/3 - name of book by Ruby Payne?
Karla/6 - I am wanting book studies with teachers.
kathyb1stia - Father of toddler living in same low rent housing with both of the mothers. Then, he gets sent off to jail and the MOTHERS help raise each others children!
Brad/3 - and what exactly does Ruby Payne do?
Kim/K/SCa - Karla.......with reference to book studies. We are talking about book discussions here? With your colleagues at school?
teach/3/ca - judy, how do you organize the study with teachers? Chapter a week?
Glenda 1st TN - Sorry Brad. I thought I would take orange tongiht for two reasons. One being UT and the other is to see if it would keepm me awake.
Karla/6 - Thanks Kim. Now I feel a little more in tune, though I may need tweeking now and then.
Kim/K/SCa - "A Framework for Understanding Poverty."
Brad/3 - glenda, you look good in orange, just keep talking and I won't be frightened
teach/3/ca - After reading Wondrous Words, I raved about it so much another 3rd teacher bought it, and I am giving it to my son's teacher as a gift .
judy3ca - Karla and Glenda, I've done three. One professional book (In the Company of Children), one fiction and one non-fiction using MOT strategies as adults and discussing them.
naneb/6sped - now, where are jan and Mae?????
teach/3/ca - sorry for double post
Brad/3 - Thanks Kim, you always come through for me. Cheep! Cheep!
teach/3/ca - I may be able to start a book study wiht the three of us
Kim/K/SCa - Brad...greeen is your color, dahling. GOOD GIFT, teach/3! Way to go........
judy3ca - teach, we met every other week and read several chapters.
Brad/3 - Yes, where is that brilliant theoretician, Jan? And my writing partner, Mae?
Glenda 1st TN - Do you think asking the teachers to read 3 or 4 chapters and meet every other week would work?
Karla/6 - Judy - interesting concept to take a trade book and incorporate MOT as adults.
naneb/6sped - judy, I enjoyed the discussion we had online
Brad/3 - glenda, I find that if I have to read for an "everry other" assignment, I either read too early or too late and don't pace myself
Kim/K/SCa - I am interested in this book study at the school site also. Now that I actually have to LEAD one.............
judy3ca - teach, my best book studies are with one person. She is my "study partner" and we are finishing our second book right now (The Writing Workshop by Katie Wook Ray). We already read Lucy Calkins' book on assessment.
Brad/3 - I'm sorry, Kim, have you chosen a book?
Karla/6 - Judy - Have you ever incurred teachers who didn't read prior to meeting or worse yet, began to fall off as time went on?
Kim/K/SCa - Lucy has a new assessment book????????Oh gawllllllllllll
judy3ca - nan, me too! I always enjoy talking to you, and that is becoming more of a concern for me lately.
judy3ca - Hi Alta Rose!
Brad/3 - Judy, I went to Heinemann and they haven't published the third one, although they said it would be June sixth. have you heard anymore
teach/3/ca - Oh judy, I am reading that book also. I would love to discuss that one.
judy3ca - Karla, nope, because it's optional and people are only there because we want to be.
Glenda 1st TN - Your right, however I've scheduled the Literacy Cirlcle for the first and third thursday in Sept and the first thurs in oct. It is for in-service credit. This will give them 3 hours. Most of our teachers really whine if they have to do too much.
naneb/6sped - I was kindof out of everything throughout May, that was just a crazy time of year for me and then my computer broke
teach/3/ca - Kim, my feelings exactly.
Karla/6 - Judy - How long do you spend with a given book? Both in time per meeting and in long term study f the entire book.
judy3ca - Brad, nope, LOL, but will you laugh too hard (thunderously) if I tell you that I pre-ordered it?
naneb/6sped - I did a computer class 2 days a week for 4 CEUs and it was 40 hours of class time
Kim/K/SCa - Brad, pay attention. On THIS very day I opened my eMail. New principal has eMailed me and wants me to lead a discussion on the Ruby Payne book. I have been wanting to do this. But I don't have a frame of reference yet.
kathyb1stia - Karla, that is a problem, so the leader made weekly assignments and sometimes gave us time to read in classtime. We were to read a chapter per week.
Brad/3 - judy, I wanted to do the same, but then, boom!, here we are june 6th, then I go to the site, and it's not up yet. LOL. We're sad
judy3ca - Karla, we usually go for about an hour and a half. We always bring food (that's often my job).
naneb/6sped - I haven't read Wondrous Words yet!!
Kim/K/SCa - naneb.......you will LOVE that book!
teach/3/ca - Kim remember he's had a few drinks!!!
Brad/3 - Oh, you're the one with Ruby Payne, Kim. sorry (cheep, cheep : ( )
naneb/6sped - I have been resisting buying it but I imagine I will break down and get it
Karla/6 - I just know that we recently ran the STW video series and I saw the teacher population diminish as we continued to meet (5 time total).
Brad/3 - the problem is Brad doesn't need a few drinks to be like this (now he's referred to himself in the 3rd person; is there no hope?)
teach/3/ca - Naneb you have to buy it. I'm glad I caved in
judy3ca - Nan, I've only read about 1/3 of WW. I got sidetracked by her other book. And my Lit Coach gave me a new book about conferring today.
teach/3/ca - LOL Brad
Kim/K/SCa - So...on top of packing a classroom, winding down a year, teaching a grad class (and re reading THEIR books), I READ Kid Writing this past week! Am I nuts?
judy3ca - Karla, I do think those videos are intimidating to a lot of people.
Brad/3 - ooh, title, judy (here I go again)
naneb/6sped - I buy these books and then special ed books, I am going to be poor soon!!
teach/3/ca - Kim..did you fit sleeping in anywhere?
Brad/3 - were there dishtowels in the video. KIM--Kid writing?
judy3ca - BRB, running downstairs for book title for Brad.
Kim/K/SCa - Karla.......are the videos any good? yes..........I did sleep. And tried to fit in my cardio training so that I wouldn't bite off any little heads.
Brad/3 - judy, you're so kind, ever so kind
teach/3/ca - Kim where are you in SCa
kathyb1stia - YES, you must have FOOD! You are right Judy.
Kim/K/SCa - Kid Writing by Feldgus and Cardonick...............writing with Kinders. REALLLY good stuff...........
Brad/3 - Judy's getting her cardio thanks to me
Karla/6 - Kim - no more insane then I am. I have went on a rampage at my university library and I now have over 50 books in my possession that I think I want to tackle over the summer while I take two graduate courses on the side. I think I need some evaluation!
Brad/3 - does it apply above kinders?
kathyb1stia - Yes, Kim, you are nuts and soon you are going to crash.
Kim/K/SCa - teach I am in the Antelope Valley........where the fire is right now
teach/3/ca - Oh, we're neighbors. I am in Castaic
Brad/3 - somebody has wondrous words from my university library and has somehow managed to keep it until fall. it's been this way since March
Kim/K/SCa - Not really, Brad
judy3ca - Phew, Brad, it's not so new (1998) but new to me. "Writer to Writer; How to Conference Young Authors" by Tommy Thomason. Whew, still panting heavily.
teach/3/ca - What graduate classes are you taking? I'm doing my masters and administrators credential through
teach/3/ca - CSUB
Kim/K/SCa - Way to run, Judy!
Brad/3 - Tommy Thomason sounds familiar. Has anyone else heard of him?
naneb/6sped - I have been reading the books on Stenhouse
Kim/K/SCa - OH! Yes, I grew up in Saugus/Newhall..........Hart High School
Brad/3 - have you started reading it judy?
Kim/K/SCa - teach.......I teach for Chapman University, Antelope Valley Academic Center.
Karla/6 - Judy and Kim - Many were intimidated by the videos. I thought they were a great way to show the concepts in the book in action. Many felt that there rooms could not survive that type of set up.
Brad/3 - (glenda, I'm ready if you wanna bring on your orange)
judy3ca - LOL, Brad, she just gave it to me today! And remember, I'm not out of school yet. So, no, not yet, but it's short.
teach/3/ca - I will also have two graduate courses, in addition to doing the reading assessments for summerschool, writing the standards based report cards and helping with the new school plan.
Karla/6 - Brad - I better check...that could be me that has Wondrous Words. Oops!
Kim/K/SCa - Yeah Glenda........where's that orange?
teach/3/ca - I'll join you in the crazy house Kim
Brad/3 - tee, hee, judy, I guess I have to crack the whip. Just wondering who it applies to
Alta Rose / 1 - brb
Glenda 1st TN - Okay guys you asked for it.
judy3ca - Karla, I love the videos, but some of us have been doing MOT for 3 years and we thought we compared nicely to the videos. Others carped about class size and other nitpicky items.
Kim/K/SCa - So I am grading finals this weekend. Then I am taking a language acquisiton class................There are two texts for that class.
Brad/3 - thenk you, ever so kind, ever so kind
Karla/6 - teach - If you are talking to me, I am taking a class on Informational Text and another on titled Literature and Resources for Children
Brad/3 - small class size in videos?
Brad/3 - Kim, breathe, just breathe. . .
kathyb1stia - Oh, teach, I will be writing standards based report cards, too. Leave a post on the chatboard. I want to know MORE!
teach/3/ca - Is that for a master's karla/
Glenda 1st TN - I do have a question. I've noticed that RWM goes great with 4 Blocks. Was 4 Blocks based on the RWM/MOT theory?
judy3ca - Yes, small class size and large classroom--at least it appears that way.
Kim/K/SCa - PLUS PLUS I have to do report cards.........(breathe breathe)
teach/3/ca - It's overwhelming kathy. We've gotten off to a good start. If you have any questions or would like to share ideas let me know
Brad/3 - don't think so glenda
Brad/3 - 4 blocks comes out of Wake Forest
Karla/6 - Judy - I can relate to the class size issue. It is a big one for me as I have the smallest room in the building. My student's complain. We can't get through the room if everyone is sitting down. It is bad.
Kim/K/SCa - I dont' think so, Glenda. BUT, Pearson's research was widely read so I wouldn't be surprised.
naneb/6sped - but 4 blocks does incorporate the strategies from MOT during Guided Reading
Brad/3 - kathy, i'd love to see what you come up with. our district wants to change reporting system too
teach/3/ca - I did the report cards Monday, played volleyball and started on my two finals which had to be postmarked today, in addition to packing and attending my son's performance. pant pant LOL
Glenda 1st TN - True, nane, I guess that what made me think they were some how related.
kathyb1stia - Thanks, Teach... I do have some questions.
Karla/6 - teach - yes...I have finally rturned now that my two children headed for college.
Kim/K/SCa - Cunningham et al are heavily into research and I am pretty sure they are acquainted with Pearson. So, his work would have complimented their work............
Brad/3 - nan, i have come up with some solutions to the problems I discussed with you earlier, you'll be glad to know. If I get them solid, I'll email you.
teach/3/ca - email for kathy teachaug@aol.com
naneb/6sped - okay Brad, did you see I posted your rubric om my site
judy3ca - Karla, yes but we had people saying things like, "Oh, I could do that too if my class were bigger." Yeah, right.
Kim/K/SCa - ..after all, the basis for MOT, STW, and RWM stems from Pearson et al 's work about WHAT GOOD READERS DO.
Brad/3 - Now, has anyone decided is MOT the How and STW the What.
Brad/3 - <---cringing as to not be pelted with eggs
kathyb1stia - Great Brad, I will post on the chatboard.
Glenda 1st TN - Oh, Brad you are a "trouble maker"
judy3ca - Karla, my youngest is heading for college next fall, too.
teach/3/ca - Duck Brad here it comes
naneb/6sped - judy, send them to me, I did the strategies with my sped class anywhere from 8 -14 kids
Kim/K/SCa - To me......"what good readers do" is just common sense. So....it makes sense that ANY balanced literacy approach is going to utilize these principles. So........4 blocks works well with MOT ideas.
Brad/3 - nan, it never would show me, it always had an error (re: my rubric)
judy3ca - Nan, send what?
Glenda 1st TN - judy, were they talking about the size of their classroom or the number of students?
Brad/3 - seriously though--assess strategy, comprehension, or both?
naneb/6sped - hmmm?? I'll check it out, do you have Word? I made it a word document
Brad/3 - Common sense for you Kim, is not common sense for the rest of us. LOL
Karla/6 - Judy- Ture, I am only up against it when we want to separate ourselves or move around, or meet together outside of a desk grouping. It just cannot be done in my classroom. It saddens me.
naneb/6sped - those people who needed larger class size
Brad/3 - I have Word. Maybe I'll try again later
judy3ca - Glenda, both. Sometimes they work with a small group and there's never a peep from the rest of the class. Not always realistic....at least for my bunch.
Kim/K/SCa - What do you mean, Brad? Of course it is........common sense is common sense. It is what it is.
Brad/3 - peep peep
Brad/3 - yes, but you're not common (ba-dump-bump)
Kim/K/SCa - Good readers monitor, question, infer, make mental images, add to schema............like DUH..........Dude.
naneb/6sped - I found the error, just an extra front slash, I will fix it
judy3ca - Karla, right, my room size is okay, but because i have such a big area for the kids to sit on the floor, the desk area gets jammed when they're sitting.
Brad/3 - okay, she's channeling Dustin
Kim/K/SCa - Why thank you.....thank you veddy mush...............
Brad/3 - oh, good, nan, I'm so excited. I feel famous. I'm published. LOL
Brad/3 - aren't we supposed to be discussing first few chapters of RWM?
Karla/6 - Judy - I wish I had an area for floor seating . I only have room for the desks. That is it.
Kim/K/SCa - We have a huge fire here. The air looks apocolyptic...........over 25,000 acres burned.
Kim/K/SCa - On the chatBOARD Brad. It moves too fast here.
judy3ca - Oh, Karla, that makes it so hard! I'm sorry for you and your kiddos.
Alta Rose / 1 - Kim, I saw it on TV tonight. Looks bad.
teach/3/ca - Is that fire separate from the one in Saugus or related?
judy3ca - Kim, that fire is where you are? Be careful!
Kim/K/SCa - It IS the Saugus fire.
Karla/6 - I have to part for a moment. My daughter just called and would like me to proofread her final paper that is due tomorrow morning.
kathyb1stia - Brad, too hard to discuss RWM here, let's post on chatboard, so we can follow up with more metaphors! LOL!!!
Brad/3 - Where's Jan with her blanket? She can smother the fire!
teach/3/ca - I haven't watched the news today. I didn't realize it had spread that far
Glenda 1st TN - Do they know how it started? I'm not up on all the news.
Brad/3 - happy editing karla
Kim/K/SCa - West of here..... smells like fire.
naneb/6sped - http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/gipsy/41/SSR.htm
kathyb1stia - Kim, are you worried on how close it is?
naneb/6sped - that is the link to the page with the rubric
teach/3/ca - It was eerie how the sun looked red yesterday
Kim/K/SCa - construction crew doing something with a blade that sparked the fire.........NOT arson
Kim/K/SCa - Oh no......we are in no danger. Worry not.
Brad/3 - Oh, you are too kind, Nan, too kind. It looks quite lovely
naneb/6sped - thanks
Glenda 1st TN - Glad you're in no danger, but be careful anyway.
Kim/K/SCa - Oh Karla......come back
Kim/K/SCa - Has anyone else read the Ruby Payne book?
Brad/3 - judy, i'm very excited about katie's new book. it sounds like exactly the book I need. I only hope it publishes soon
teach/3/ca - What is the title of her new book?
Alta Rose / 1 - Nan, that site looks great! I just bookmarked it. Thanks! I like the rubric, Brad!
Brad/3 - WRiting from the Heart, I believe
teach/3/ca - No but thanks to you Kim, I will have to buy it
Brad/3 - I never can get the chapter preview to come up though
naneb/6sped - thanks, Alta rose
Kim/K/SCa - teach.....it is a quick read........mostly in bullet points.
Brad/3 - thank you, alta rose. It hung up all year on butcher paper
judy3ca - Great, Brad, but I'm telling you that I love The Writing Workshop. My study partner and I are reading it together. The author is a little intimidating sometimes and I sure hope I'm measuring up!
kathyb1stia - YES, Kim, OLD principal did staff Book Study.
teach/3/ca - judy, that' s how I'm feeling. But she has some great ideas in her writing workshop book
Brad/3 - What is the fundamental differences between the 3, you think? (speculating on 3rd of course) I've only read WW
kathyb1stia - Also, the district has brought in two speakers on Ruby Payne. There is a study guilde.
Kim/K/SCa - INTIMIDATING is reading Debbie Miller.............. sheesh.............will I ever measure up?
Glenda 1st TN - kathy, how did the staff respond to doing a staff book study?
Kim/K/SCa - STUDY guide? Ooohhh.........
Brad/3 - Kim, two words--dish towels. How else can you measure greatness?
judy3ca - teach, thanks, it makes me feel better that someone else feels that way. The hard thing about elementary school is that we have to work on several subjects. Katie Wood Ray makes me feel like there is only writing.
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, remember you eat an elephant one bite at a time. We will learn and implement RWM and 4 blocks for me one bite at a time.
Mae - Hi everyone! Company just left, so I am late.
Brad/3 - Wow, this Ruby Payne is something in your district Kathy, do you have a lot of disparity?
Brad/3 - Yay, Mae, my future writing partner is here!!
Brad/3 - That's why she's judy/3!!
Kim/K/SCa - (wailing and gnashing teeth) But my dishtowels are so..............average!
judy3ca - Do you ever miss a trick, Brad?
Glenda 1st TN - hi Mae, It looks like judy is reallllly glad you're hear.
Brad/3 - judy, I hear you, I go from reading heavily on reading for a month or two, and then math for another month or two. . . the cycle never ends
Mae - I'm not sure how much I can contribute, my eyelids are heavy...heavy...
Kim/K/SCa - LOL Glenda! So true..........
kathyb1stia - It was voluntary and after hours for graduate study, so only those interested did it. I liked the principal's approach to weekly assignments and in class reading time.
Brad/3 - hush your mouth, judy : )
Kim/K/SCa - (((Mae)) smooch smooch
kathyb1stia - Hi, MAE
Brad/3 - They just don't have that not-so-fresh feeling, Kim?
judy3ca - zipped lips
Mae - Kim - will you come to Tx and teach my daughter in kinder?
Kim/K/SCa - Yes, Brad..........(sigh)......
judy3ca - Yeah, Brad, but I swear I spent 2 years on reading and this last year on writing. It sure would be nice if my students knew a bit of social studies.
Kim/K/SCa - Mae.......ship her to me U.P.S. I will send her home on weekends.
Brad/3 - Now we just need Jan, has she finished the ragout?
Mae - Brad - I was thinking that the first move should be on visualizing
judy3ca - Mae, and I get her in third, okay?
Kim/K/SCa - We did the COOLEST KWL today on Octopuses............
Brad/3 - To do it all properly is near impossible, judy. Just concentrate, concentrate. (Not to mention the school day's too short)
Mae - Ohhhh....Kim....I would miss her too much and you would be too worn out to chat on Friday nights
Alta Rose / 1 - Hello Marie!
kathyb1stia - Oh, Brad, one of my student's FATHER is also FATHER to another STUDENT in the same grade. Then, he has a toddler with both women the SAME AGE, He gets sent to prison and the mothers help raise each other's children. Ruby discusses this in her book. What an eye opener for me.
Marie/3/SC - Hi, I am new! Can I come in?
judy3ca - Oh, boy, another third grader. Hi Marie.
Brad/3 - That would be octoPI, Kim
Mae - sure judy
Kim/K/SCa - And I let Riah do all the writing.......I set it up with the "what we know" stuff and then I just let her fill in...............She just goes a mile a minute so it was sooooooooooooo coolllll!
Marie/3/SC - Hi, Alta Rose. I am so excited to be here
Mae - Come on in Marie
kathyb1stia - Brad, we also approach story sequencing different after reading the book.
Marie/3/SC - Hi Judy!
kathyb1stia - Ruby has a great example about retelling the Cinderella story.
Marie/3/SC - I am gonna lurk around and eavesdrop for a while
kathyb1stia - Brad, it is so true -- mixed up story retelling.
Brad/3 - did i miss something. Kathy--sequencing? Mae--visualizing?
Mae - Brad - I really do want to make an attempt at writing this summer - my problem is my mushy brain
Kim/K/SCa - When the text informed us that OCTOPUSES are playful and that they are basically shy and do not fight, the KIDS inferred that they were not "mean." Now, "mean" was something they put down in "what we know." It was just so cool..........................
Brad/3 - What would you like to write, Mae?
kathyb1stia - Hi, MArie
Mae - BRAD - The FIRST BOOK to write - Visualizing...how to make pictures in your mind
Alta Rose / 1 - That sounds neat, Kim!
kathyb1stia - Brad, I will post on chatboard.
Brad/3 - I picked up a book on this strategy at my public library. Forgot the title though. maybe will look up and post later
Mae - Brad - I can't keep up...I don't know what to write - I have a list of things - I can't seem to find a starting place
Alta Rose / 1 - There is one out there somewhere called "Visualizing and Verbalizing" Mae.
Brad/3 - So are you thinking like a STW II, mae
judy3ca - Mae and Brad, if you really do write a book on visualization, I did a seminar on sensory images and have a few ideas you might want.
Mae - Alta rose - someone else wrote my book? Pooh!!!
naneb/6sped - what do you all think about the 6-8 week study of each strategy is this really doable?
Mae - Brad, I was thinking we need a series of short books - for the "cool" teachers who don't read (hehehe)
Brad/3 - nan, i'm thinking---boooring
Brad/3 - The MOT Library
Brad/3 - published by Time/Life
Glenda 1st TN - Yes, Murfreesboro, just southeast of Nashville. Where are you?
Marie/3/SC - Nan, in relation to that question, if you do a 6-8 week study - what strategy should you start with in 3rd grade?
Sadie - Cool teachers don't read?
Sadie - We are so uncool!!
Mae - naneb - I think the long studies are overkill. I prefer short and spiraled
judy3ca - available on Amazon
Alta Rose / 1 - I went to a workshop quite a few years ago, put on by the Speech and Language people, on Visualizing and Verbalizing. It was a neat program, but designed to help kids visualize on an individual basis. I understand they have a new book, designed more for the whole class.
naneb/6sped - I my self cannot imagine spending that long on one strategy
Brad/3 - Marie, I'm starting (I think) on meta, then schema, then visualizing, then question, Pretty much same sequence as in RWM
Kim/K/SCa - Sadie.......sometimes those of us who read professional books and try to "share" are scoffed at by the "cool" teachers ..................
judy3ca - One of my coworkers told me I'm a wonderful teacher and a major geek. She meant it as a compliment, LOL. Good think she's young and I'm old, LOL.
Mae - Sadie - you missed my post the other day - we are the nerds (in the minority), and the rest think they are to "cool" to read. You had to be there I guess
Brad/3 - mae, short and spiraled. How's that for a title? LOL. Seriously how would you do it?
naneb/6sped - Mae, I am so glad to hear that, I know I had a hard time this year not doing inference when I did questioning or predicting there seems to be a natural cinnection between the strategies
Marie/3/SC - Aah, Brad, I am only on chapter 2. I can see I need to get busy reading. My main problem with strategy teaching so far is where to start and what to focus on. Yours sounds like a good plan.
Sadie - Yup, okay, I get it.
naneb/6sped - judy, you are not old!!
Kim/K/SCa - I like that title! "Short and Spiraled." That is it, Brad and Mae. I will write your Introduction.
Mae - Simple. Focused. Direct. Example lessons and modeling. User friendly.
Brad/3 - i was just reading on mosaicteachers about where to fit in sequencing, but now also wondering where do you fit in compare/contrast, cause/effect, two valuable SKILLS
Alta Rose / 1 - I like it already, Mae!!
Brad/3 - Kim, just promise me. No dishtowels in intro
naneb/6sped - my biggest shortfall is not enough shared responsibility, I am going to really work on it this year
Able - Hi, I've got an opinion survey for teachers, anyone interested?
judy3ca - nan, what a great friend you are!
Brad/3 - this chatroom is so full, it's not even registering everyone anymore
Mae - Alright Kim!!! Great minds think alike (and so do nerds - hehehe)
Able - Hi, I've got an opinion survey for teachers, anyone interested?
Able - Hi, I've got an opinion survey for teachers, anyone interested?
Sadie - Okay, okay, I gotta ask. What is it with the dishtowels around here?
Karla/6 - Just returned to read the last few comments. With regard to the major geek comment by Judy...doesn't the fact that we are all HERE on a Friday night speak for itself?
kathyb1stia - Brad, I will need to study sequencing and MOT versus Ruby Payne!
naneb/6sped - Now, Karla, what are you saying
Mae - c/c amd c/e in content reading - social studies and science, and when you read two themed pieces (fiction and nonfiction)
judy3ca - Karla, LOL, that's it! Friday night geeks!
Sadie - Karla, not only are we here on a FRIDAY...school is OUT for some of us.
Kim/K/SCa - LOL, Karla! Yes.............
Brad/3 - okay, mae. thanks. (make sure that lands in the book)
Glenda 1st TN - Speak for yourself Karla, I'm living a very exciting life. It is after 10:00pm and I'm still awake. Now that is an exciting life.
Karla/6 - nan - only the truth.
judy3ca - Sadie, are you SadieT?
Brad/3 - Friday Night Geeks: Implementing MOT in the Classroom
Sadie - Yes, I'm Sadie T. Sorry, forgot the T!
Kim/K/SCa - Geeks and Chickens: The New Generation
Mae - Be back in a sec......
Brad/3 - by Mae and Brad/3 soon to be 2
judy3ca - Sadie, I don't care about the T, LOL, I just wanted to make sure you're who I think you are. I love your posts on the chatboard.
Marie/3/SC - Brad, is mosaicteachers another chatboard?
kathyb1stia - My fault about the dishtowels. One night I was TRYING to keep up and typed dishtowels, instead of table cloths as I hadn't read the BOOK WW, nor seen the videos of Debbie Miller's classroom.
naneb/6sped - I know I have to teach cause and effect and sequencing and compare and contrast because those skills are on the state tests, Although I was surprised to see the depth of some of the questions on the practice test
Karla/6 - Glenda LOL. I think we are all sad cases and products of our obsession to teach.
Brad/3 - Chickens and Eggs: How One Set of Teachers Mixed Metaphors and Changed Lives by Jan and Brad
Kim/K/SCa - Well if you are Brad/3 soon to be 2, then I am Kim/K soon to be K-1/Sca
Glenda 1st TN - So true Karla.
Kim/K/SCa - Yeah.........what is mosaicteachers?
judy3ca - And Mae, are you changing grade levels?
Alta Rose / 1 - And I am Alta Rose / 1 Soon to be Alta Rose / 2-- Brb!
Brad/3 - mosaicteachers is a group on yahoo. Judy has already been there.
Marie/3/SC - Kim, is okay to ask where you are in SC? I am in Anderson
Brad/3 - nan has too
Sadie - Kathy, thanks for explaining. I was dying of curiosity...
Sadie - Judy, thanks!
naneb/6sped - mosaicteachers is a email group on yahoo
Brad/3 - A Summer of Reading and Chatting: How Brad/3 Became Brad/2
Kim/K/SCa - I 'm sorry Marie........I meant to type SCa...Southern California.
Mae - judy - I am so needed in 4th - and I have already graciously agreed to have a child in my class that comes w/an lawyer - those are the breaks!
Brad/3 - mae, i forget, where are you now?
judy3ca - Mae, LOL, and somehow I offered to take the resource kids for next year. Aren't we nice?
Mae - The chicken/egg thing is soooooooo confusing...don't even start or I'll have to kill someone (hehe)
Glenda 1st TN - It has been great chatting with everyone. But tomorrow is Saturday and my husband and I are landscaping our yard. so I better try to get some sleep. I'll watch for the RWM discussion on the chat board.
Mae - 4th
Marie/3/SC - Oh, I see Kim, my mistake, not yours
Jan - The ragout has arrived!
Alta Rose / 1 - Mae--w/an lawyer? Don't understand.
Karla/6 - Bye Glenda
Brad/3 - goody, it's jan with the ragout!!!!!!!!!
judy3ca - Hooray, Jan is here! Hi Jan! I have the frosting!
Kim/K/SCa - Okay, Glenda........I will post something tomorrow.
Sadie - Hi Jan! No frosting on it right??
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, sorry I missed you tonight.
Jan - Oh good, What is ragout without frosting!
Kim/K/SCa - (((Jan)))) .....you brought food?
Mae - Glenda - will you landscape mine too?
Sadie - Ughhh Judy beat me to that.
Alta Rose / 1 - Take Care, Glenda!
Brad/3 - glenda, stay in orange, will ya?
Jan - What deep topic are we discussing this evening?
Mae - Alta Rose - the child is woefully behind and the parents go themselves a high flutin' lawyer cause the last school didn't do their job...
Mae - ((((((((((((JAN))))))))))))
Kim/K/SCa - The Ruby Payne book..........was mentioned..........
Sadie - Mae is that a special ed student?
Brad/3 - oh, mae, document, document, document. LOL
Alta Rose / 1 - Oh, I see.
Karla/6 - Jan - We are discussing the fact that we are all geeks since we CHOOSE to spend our Friday nights here.
Jan - Trying to catch up here---not easy with dilated eyes!
Glenda 1st TN - I'll try Brad. But some times I like Alabama, and Florida State, and Univ of Fl . Just don't tell the other UT nuts around here.
Marie/3/SC - What is the title of the Ruby Payne book (assuming that is not the title)?
naneb/6sped - War Eagle!!! Go AU
Kim/K/SCa - LOL Jan....I understand.........it's either dilated eyes or longer arms.........LOL
judy3ca - Karla, and owning a large amount of books also qualifies one for geekdom.
Jan - Karla, yes, I've noticed we are all here on Fridays. Doesn't say a lot for our with-it-ness!
Mae - All kinds of issues...it doesn't matter right now...I've got to talk about something else...
Brad/3 - Jan, I am writing a book----Chickens and Eggs--How a Group of Teachers Mixed Metaphors and Changed Lives
Alta Rose / 1 - brb
Karla/6 - Judy - let's not EVEN get into the bit about buying books.
Jan - Brad, I like it! I assume I will be one of the main characters!
kathyb1stia - I have been TOLD not to buy any more Kiddie lit for my classroom1
Kim/K/SCa - Geeks, Chickens, and Spirals: The Many Uses for Dishtowels
Mae - Brad - I thought we were writing Short and Spiraling
judy3ca - kathy, by whom?
Karla/6 - kathy- says who?
Kim/K/SCa - Kathy has an idiot for a principal. It is official. We took a vote. Some village somewhere is missing her.
Jan - I spend an hour a day bringing the Amazon packages off the porch!
Alta Rose / 1 - I emailed my collegue (who asked me to post a question about what book to read first) the threads on the Prof. Readings board and said--"See what you started?"
Brad/3 - Yeah, that was something I forgot. Mae, how would you spiral the strategies as opposed to having deep 8-12 week long units on one strategy?
Brad/3 - Jan, LOL
Kim/K/SCa - My school secretary made me a certificate. It said: "Amazon Queen."
naneb/6sped - LOL@Kim
Brad/3 - you were TOLD by your principal, kathy. Heavens!! Whatever for??
judy3ca - However, I am running out of places to put books in my classroom.
Jan - We can never read anything because we don't know what to read FIRST!
kathyb1stia - Yep, my principal TOLD me and she meant it. She even strongly suggested that I give away more or donated to the school library.
Karla/6 - Brad- I cannot imagine spending that long on one strategy. My students would flip.
Brad/3 - so true, Jan, constantly skimming (which is good, as it's a state indicator)
Mae - Spiral - okay, I would teach a strategy, release it (quicker), and then after the next one, model using both. Reading is a process of using all of the strategies and comprehension skills interwoven and throughout
Kim/K/SCa - Because Brad...............she is a bonafide, micromanaging, bureaucratic, pencil-necked, stupid..................doofus.
Brad/3 - but WHY kathy. surely she gave you a reason
judy3ca - kathy, wait, your principal doesn't like books? My principal always teases me kindly about the many books in my room. In fact, at Open House he came to my room last and announced to the parents that Room 12 has the most books.
Karla/6 - Brad- Do you introduce the strategy and then just spend the rest of the time implementing it?
Brad/3 - so, kim, some of us have our faults. . .
Marie/3/SC - Kathy, that is critical. Is this person an actual teacher or some kind of alien body snatcher.
Kim/K/SCa - Who has the AUDACITY to tell one of her BEST teachers to "stop buying books" because SHE doesn't like how much room they take up. Worthless piece of administrative ...............doofus.
kathyb1stia - I have 16 ten gallon Rubbermaid Tubs in my hallway that I had to bring home to please her.
Brad/3 - tried a small study on questioning this year, Karla, so you're asking wrong person. want to implement strategies next year.
Karla/6 - Mae- I agree with your strategy use.
Brad/3 - why are they in hall, kathy (i'm beginning to see reasoning)
Kim/K/SCa - Words cannot express how ANNOYED I am that some university somewhere actually gave this ...............doofus...............a CREDENTIAL.
Sadie - I have way too many books. One day I was trying to GET RID of some of them, and another teacher (who did not want my books) offered to GIVE me hers instead so... I took them. Can't help it!
Kim/K/SCa - No you are not, Brad.
naneb/6sped - How many books do you have??
Brad/3 - Kim, breathe, just breathe. . .
kathyb1stia - My hallway at HOME.
Mae - I have well over a thousand books. How many do you have?
Kim/K/SCa - (breathing. breathing.)
naneb/6sped - Oh, Okay, I thought you meant at school!!
judy3ca - Jan, do you know I've been thinking about ratatouille all day? My son's girlfriend is a vegetarian and sometimes I make it for her.
Brad/3 - oh, okay, then i still don't see reasoning. Like, what's her deal?
Mae - Have a drink Kim...I've got wine...
Brad/3 - and judy's arrived from left field!!! LOL
Kim/K/SCa - Brad the deal is this. The woman is a doofus. Complete and unadulterated. Complete doofus.
Jan - Judy, and you can SPELL it, too!
naneb/6sped - I wish I had that many books, I have to dig and scramble to find books for reading
Brad/3 - unadulterated, so she doesn't cheat on her spouse?
judy3ca - I've never counted my books. And Brad--I'm always in left field. I'm a free thinker, LOL.
Kim/K/SCa - She spends entirely too much time micromanaging in areas she has no expertise, no passion, no understanding, and little humanity.
Brad/3 - me too nan, second year teacher
Mae - I have been cleaning out my books - I've weeded out books that were not on my quality literature list, books that are falling apart, and some books that are not AR (the kids never read these books anyway)
Mae - I have been cleaning out my books - I've weeded out books that were not on my quality literature list, books that are falling apart, and some books that are not AR (the kids never read these books anyway)
Jan - I've bought a thousand books just this MONTH!
kathyb1stia - I have lots of book shelves in my classroom, no Rubbermaid tubs on the floor.
naneb/6sped - sounds like my principal, because of his interferance I still don't know what I am teaching next year
Brad/3 - Kim, this is sounding familiar. Do you know this woman?
Brad/3 - jan, are you serious. (and rich?)
judy3ca - Jan, ROFLOL!!! We need to buy stock in Amazon.
Kim/K/SCa - Not only THAT, she bugs me. Vicariously. Because she picks at Kathy. Who is a far better teacher than she ever could hope to be...........................
Brad/3 - kim are you in same building as kathy?
Jan - Brad, neither!
Kim/K/SCa - JAN.........you are knocking me off my soapbox here. 1000 books???????????????????????
Brad/3 - need more rocks. brb
judy3ca - As a matter of fact, one day the news reported that Amazon's financial troubles were lessening and my husband commented, "See, Jude, you saved the company."
Mae - I think that I did spend about a $1000. on books in the past 4 months.
Kim/K/SCa - I stand in awe of you Jan. I am having a moment of silence.
naneb/6sped - ha!!ha!!ha!! toooooo funny!!
Alta Rose / 1 - Do you guys get a tax deduction for school-related stuff you buy? We don't.
Jan - But I have bought a LOT of books. I have 28 new ones for my K granddaughter to read, and she was just here two weeks ago!
Brad/3 - Ah, that's bettah (gulp gulp gulp)
judy3ca - Confession: I love hardbacks.
kathyb1stia - Hold on there Kim to your AQ title!
Mae - Everyone will be able to take a whopping $250. off their taxes this year! Whoopee!
Brad/3 - confession: i love greenbacks (but that's between you and me)
Sadie - Too bad Amazon doesn't have a discount for teachers like Barnes and Noble does... (they don't do they??)
Jan - I have taken Amazon out of my "Favorites" so I won't go there hourly!
judy3ca - Brad, LOL.
Kim/K/SCa - Yes ....... I itemize on Schedule C...........
Alta Rose / 1 - Well, Mae, that's better than we get, which is nothing.
Brad/3 - who was it here that spoke of a book, lo, one of these Fri nites called "Text Forms and Features"
naneb/6sped - go to half.com it is cheaper
Mae - I just discovered a half price bookstore yesterday. Bought a hardback Mem Fox book for $5.
Brad/3 - Judy, wanna hear a story about loving greenbacks?
Mae - Alta Rose - that is federal income tax - you will get it - claim it
judy3ca - Sure, Brad....
kathyb1stia - Mae, my dad laughed when he heard the $250 and he has no idea what I really spend!
naneb/6sped - I went to the thrift store and bout a bag of books
Kim/K/SCa - I am going to have to list all my books. Any suggestions on a program? Excel?
Marie/3/SC - Barnes and Noble discount!?! Nobody ever told me. How do you get this fabulous discount?
Brad/3 - it may be a little sacreligious amongst this bunch, but here goes:
Mae - I found that one Brad. It looks good. I haven't been able to order it yet.
Jan - No tax deduction for me! You can't deduct books for granddaughter or chatboards!
Kim/K/SCa - Marie! You didn't KNOW!!! Tell them at the cashier. Bring school I.D. or a stub.......
judy3ca - Mae, and I bought it, LOL.
naneb/6sped - Kim, Crystal on the 4 blocks chatboard is offering a computer program to catalog a class library, her husband wrote the program
Sadie - At Barnes and Noble you just need to show something proving your a teacher, then they give you a card.
Alta Rose / 1 - No, I won't Mae. I'm in Canada!
Kim/K/SCa - Is it worth it Naneb?
kathyb1stia - I got AUDIT on my school deductions and they WON!
Alta Rose / 1 - No, I won't Mae. I'm in Canada!
Sadie - I *think* it's B&N, could be Borders (maybe both)
Marie/3/SC - Man! (Marie smacks her head!) And just think of all those books that went discountless.
Alta Rose / 1 - Whoops. Sorry for the double!
judy3ca - I thought your income had to be a certain level to be able to deduct teaching stuff now.
naneb/6sped - I don't have it yet, she said kids can check out books, write reviews and it logs the books etc.
naneb/6sped - Walden books does a teacher discout too 20%
judy3ca - Sadie, B&N is a 20% discount for teachers here.
Sadie - Seems like buying stacks of professional books would be proof enough that you're a teacher, but they want to see something like a staff ID card to get the discount.
Kim/K/SCa - Judy I have a straight arrow accountant...............I just give him all the amounts and he does his magic.
Brad/3 - a bunch of us were standing around discussing why we became teachers the other day, and of course the inevitable comment came up, "Because I love children" And I was the lone voice who spoke up and said, "I'm here for the paycheck." Everyone just looked at me and I said, "Let's face it. We may all love children. But take away that paycheck, and we'll see who shows up here tomorrow morning."
Mae - ARRGG! - My computer is acting goofy. I'm here twice now.
kathyb1stia - Both, B&N and Borders'
Sadie - Brad, that's true, but, that's because we need money to survive.
Mae - judy - is it good - I really want it
Brad/3 - I told you it was sacrilegious.
Sadie - If I didn't NEED money, I'd certainly teach for free.
Mae - So sorry Alta Rose
Kim/K/SCa - Brad, Brad , Brad.........you troublemaker.
judy3ca - Brad, did they laugh?
Alta Rose / 1 - That's OK, Mae!
Karla/6 - If B & N classifies any of the books as textbooks, they will not give you the 20% discount on that book.
naneb/6sped - One day in class I mentioned that it was payday and a student asked "really, where do you work?"
Kim/K/SCa - No.....you don't say, "Because I love children." Pedophiles love children.
Kim/K/SCa - You say, "I teach for the satisfaction."
Jan - I agree, Sadie. No money, no ragout!
Alta Rose / 1 - Lol, Mae!
judy3ca - It's a good organizational tool, Mae, especially for upper graders like yours. I showed it to my Lit Coach and she liked it, too.
Sadie - Kim, that's awful!!
naneb/6sped - I teach for the money!
Mae - Me too Kim - and he is cute too (did I mention that I 'm married to him?)
Alta Rose / 1 - Whoops! I meant LOL to Nan!
Brad/3 - so, trying to order Text Features. Well I was surfing net and came across a site by this name at the Lake Washington School District if I remember correctly, but you can't access it unless you work for the district. (yes, Kim, cheep cheep) So i'm just wondering who's publishing it is coming out of that district?
Sadie - Didn't mean "teach for satisfation" is awful... meant the pedophiles. Can't keep up with this chat!
Brad/3 - yes, they laughed and said, "Well that's true" I may be a nerd but I'm not self-righteous.
judy3ca - Nan, me too! I said something about my job and a kid asked, "You have a job?"
Marie/3/SC - I enjoyed chatting with you guys, I will be back next week if you will have me.
Brad/3 - bye marie, come back anytime
Sadie - Yes, even in HIGH SCHOOL they ask if I have a job!
Mae - Every Friday night Marie
Karla/6 - bye Marie
Alta Rose / 1 - This might be the Visualizing and Verbalizing book I was talking about. I don't remember it being this expensive, tho.
Marie/3/SC - Thanks Brad--Night all
judy3ca - Bye Marie, see you next week!
Brad/3 - My secretary comes in all the time and hands me my check in front of the children.
Alta Rose / 1 - Here's the link--http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y02Y0425166Y9113086/qid=1023507789/sr=1-1/002-2580371-0119262
Sadie - Hey Brad... you get pay checks "all the time"? Me, just once a month... LOL
Brad/3 - judy, i missed organizing tool?
Alta Rose / 1 - Our checks are deposited automatically into our bank account.
judy3ca - Brad, maybe this is a little obsessive, but I'd be really upset if my secretary interrupted my class for that.
Brad/3 - it's funny though when they see you out and about, like you sleep at school or something
Mae - You don't have direct deposit Brad?
judy3ca - Okay, another run downstairs for Brad....
naneb/6sped - and then tell you about it like you didn't see them too
Brad/3 - she just walks in; it doesn't really interrupt the lesson. You guys know me, I just go right on talking (and cracking stupid jokes)
Mae - My screen keeps freezing up - what's the deal?
Alta Rose / 1 - I ran into a Gr. 1 student at the bank one Saturday and she whispered to her mother, "Mrs. W. is wearing jeans!"
Karla/6 - I think I will call it a night. It has been enlightening, as usual. This is late for a "geek" like me.
Brad/3 - LOL, true, nan
kathyb1stia - We have direct deposit, but the secretary loves to come to the room to deliver the stub copy.
Brad/3 - sometimes, I make a large elaborate bow when she hands it to me
Sadie - Yes and they say "What are YOU doing here?!" like they can't imagine a teacher having to shop...
The other IA Kathy - You guys are STILL HERE! YEA!!!!
Alta Rose / 1 - Don't you guys have mailboxes? Lol!
Sadie - Hi Other IA Kathy
Brad/3 - even direct deposit, you get that stub. If I direct deposit, (which I don't do, cause I think banks are the Mafia) If you direct deposit, it doesn't post till Monday
Jan - Kathy! You're here! Did you use your deck table?
daranda - Haven't seen any of my hs kids in public yet
Catalina - How do you plan on spending your summer? I've got two new preps so you know what I'll be doing!
judy3ca - Pant, pant....it's at school, and I'm not running there, too. It's something like Nonfiction Text Features and I think the author is Moody.
Brad/3 - or sometimes drop to my knees and then kiss it
The other IA Kathy - Yes, until the thunderstorm rolled in.
Mae - I'm losing my grip as well. Sorry to come late and leave early, but I'm exhausted. P.S. Baby niece is having another surgery - this one will cause her to each from a tube possibly forever...need prayers
kathyb1stia - Way to go, Alta Rose
Brad/3 - teach for satisfaction (shyah)
daranda - Cat- i have two preps,too....bio and life science
Mae - Quick question - Brad - don't you have a box?
Sadie - Brad thinks outside his box.
Mae - Moody sounds right Judy -I have it saved somewhere so I can buy it
kathyb1stia - HI OTHER IA KATHY, got any room in the class on PWIM?
Brad/3 - thanks, judy, i'm giving you a workout and you're ever so kind, ever so kind
naneb/6sped - I have a minimum of 5 preps, usually more than that
Jan - You mean a box to think OUTSIDE of?
Mae - Brad invents the box - he will be famous someday and leave us poor nerds in the dust
The other IA Kathy - I'm sorry, we don't ... but I'd love to communicate with you. I posted another response with my email.
kathyb1stia - If we use DD, then ours gets posted a day EARLIER!
daranda - 5 preps..wow naneb! how do it?
Catalina - Are you kidding! 5 preps! How do you keep sane?
Brad/3 - mae, unfortunately, i teach in the kind of school, where you don't leave anything of value just laying around, not even in teacher's mailbox
Brad/3 - why thank you mae, thenk you veddy mush
judy3ca - Mae, I haven't even really looked at it very well--I have a LOT to read this summer and another week of school.
naneb/6sped - I do almost all of my lesson planning on Saturday morning at school
Sadie - I'm gonna have 5 preps too... sanity is not an issue, I was not sane to begin with.
Lynn - You should teach those kids the 7th commandment
daranda - LOL Sadie
Brad/3 - nan, work on a Sat., you beast!!
Alta Rose / 1 - We've had 5 preps the last few years, but do to money problems we are going down to 3.
Jan - Real teachers are not sane!
The other IA Kathy!! - Sorry ... I clicked myself out of the room. Now I'm here twice!
Brad/3 - so much thunder around here
Lynn - I try not to do any lesson plans after school or at home
Catalina - Do prep for the week to come? how far in advance do you plan?
naneb/6sped - I am the computer tech at school so, I usually work on Saturday to do my planning and copying etc, no tome during the week
judy3ca - Thanks, everyone for a great chat! Good night!
Mae - OOOH bad ...So sorry Brad...
daranda - I am finding that out, jan....i'm a student teach
kathyb1stia - Hey, Brad, need more RAIN?
Lynn - I have only one prep
Brad/3 - why is everyone logging off and coming back on under new persona??? DOLLY LIVES!!
naneb/6sped - I usually plan units and then adjust as it goes along
Kim/SCa - I was booted. Musta been something I said....................
Jan - The ragout is calling. See you on the chatboard. Night, all...
The other IA Kathy!! - We had a good rain. Flash flooding in parts of town. It is heading east.
Alta Rose / 1 - Well, I think I better go pay some attention to my hubby. Goodnight, everyone!
Lynn - brad, I think you have done that
Mae - I am having technical difficulties. Logged off to log on to say good night. See ya'll next week.
Brad/3 - judy always leaves so quickly. It's like glenda and the pink bubble, no time to wave goodbye
The other IA Kathy!! - I just have split personalities!!
naneb/6sped - Lynn, I have 2 planning periods at school and end up using both of them for computer stuff, so, I have no chlice but do it at home or go to school
daranda - naneb- did that this term...ended up with lots of details to plan
Catalina - are your preps closely related? (i.e life science and bio?)
Lynn - Judy has a life, unlike some of you
The other IA Kathy!! - Night Jan ... wish I would of gotten here sooner!!!!
Kim/SCa - Sadie...........did my explanation get into the chatroom or was I booted before then?
Brad/3 - okay, now I'm confused, who is really in here?
Lynn - I mostly like to surf the web or draw stuff
Lynn - Duh, check the top of the board and read the names
naneb/6sped - I teach special ed reading, language, math and then two classes of a thinking skills class called Instrumental Enrichment this is at a middle school
Sadie - Kim I'm having so much trouble keeping up with this chat tonight, I'm not even sure! But I don't know what your explanation was...
Brad/3 - lynn, do not begin
The other IA Kathy!! - Yea ... but I'm here twice!
Lynn - Yes it is hard to keep up
daranda - nice to meet you all...see you later!!!
naneb/6sped - you get used to it after awhile
Catalina - ditto
Lynn - I am listening to metallica while I type and I amwatching carrie
Sadie - Bye Daranda
Kim/SCa - We were talking about "loving children" not being reason enough to teach. I repeated something a prof of mine once said. The reason has to go deeper than that. Then I was booted...........and I couldn't log back in for a minute or two. I get back and there are other people here.........so confoozled
Brad/3 - you are talented lynn. Thank your mother for us
Brad/3 - kim, explain again, they were never on
Lynn - Thanks, Brad. She tell me that all the time
naneb/6sped - this is going to sound stupid probably but i teach because I can!
Brad/3 - i've seen that on a bumper sticker somewhere nan
Sadie - Right Kim. And a univ.prof. of mine once said - at an interview, if they ask you what your weakness is... NEVER say "Well, I love teaching, but I really hate kids." LOL!
Lynn - Nan, explain
naneb/6sped - I fought against being a teacher for years and finally realized it is what I am
kathyb1stia - I agree Nan!
Kim/SCa - Where is Kathy B?
Brad/3 - LOL, Sadie, that's what I say all the time (in private of course)
Brad/3 - I always say, "This job would be perfect if it weren't for the kids." LOL
Lynn - Isn't that kind of hypoccriticl?
naneb/6sped - I don't always like the kids I teach but I love teaching
Kim/SCa - What naneb means is that we teach because it is who we ARE. It is a calling.
naneb/6sped - Thanks Kim that is exactly what I mean
Lynn - A calling? I d oubt it. education is just easy to get into
naneb/6sped - when I became a teachers assistant I couldsn't believe they would pay me to do that, I had a ball
Brad/3 - speaking of calling, "Bedtime, Lynn?"
Kim/SCa - Yes........a calling. If you are there for the right reasons.
naneb/6sped - that is right Lynn, and that is why not all people who teach are teachers
Sadie - Naneb, that's a good way to put it - "not all people who teach are teachers"
Kim/SCa - If you are in teaching because it is "easy to get into," then go work for the DMV. What we do in the classroom is just too important. You have to teach from the heart.
naneb/6sped - It is easy to spot them too, they leave right after school, they follow the textbook exactly, they don't sponsor any clubs or do any extracurricular activities
Brad/3 - check email, kim, nan
Sadie - I've gotta go. Good night everyone!
Lynn - Nan, I am like that
Brad/3 - don't leave so soon sadie
Lynn - Why should we sponsor clubs?
naneb/6sped - then, Lynn, why are you a teacher?
Brad/3 - where is the other IA Kathy?
Lynn - nan, just for the hours and the money
Brad/3 - nan, how'd you do that?
naneb/6sped - why not sponsor a club, involve yourself in the lives of your students, make the school a community, so kids you are interested enough in them to do it
kathyb1stia - Good night everyone. It is after 11.
Sadie T - Wait, wait, just thought of something...
Jan - Checking back in...I have a question for Lynn
Kim/SCa - Let's see.......you sponsor clubs so that you can do something GOOD for the kids?
naneb/6sped - then, work for McDonalds, I don't want you teaching my children
Brad/3 - if you're in it for the money, lynn, whoo boy!!
Brad/3 - night, kath
Lynn - good
Jan - Lynn, this is a chat about MOT. I'm wondering how you implement that with your class.
Sadie T - Wow, Jan, that is WIERD!! We came back at the same time and I also had a questin for Lynn!!!
Kim/SCa - Good night my friend............eYa later, gator
Brad/3 - jan, what happened to your brown. LOL
Jan - Great minds outside that box, Sadie
Lynn - What is MOT?
Brad/3 - what a hoot. IN it for money. ROFLMAOPMP
Jan - It was CHOCOLATE---making me hungry
Brad/3 - okay nan thanks
naneb/6sped - Mosaic of Thought
Jan - Lynn, this is a MOT chat!
Kim/SCa - Mosaic of Thought and other related professional books................
Jan - It is "Mosaic of Thought"
Brad/3 - Mother of Theresa
naneb/6sped - Lynn, what do you teach? subject, grade
Sadie T - Lynn, teaching must also be somewhat of a calling for you, otherwise you wouldn't be HERE right?
Lynn - Oh ssorry I thought this was a Teacher chat
Lynn - High school government
Brad/3 - it is lynn, Mot is teaching book
naneb/6sped - this is a teacher chat, we are all teachers
Brad/3 - you could use MOT in government. That would be interesting; you should try it.
Kim/SCa - I was reviewing the first Chapter of RWM.............I really like the first book baskets she sets out. With the song lyrics?
Brad/3 - Kim, I was thinking of this with poems
naneb/6sped - I want to be the best teacher that I can be, I hope the teachers who teach my children feel the same way
Brad/3 - and dishtowels
Brad/3 - you're not kidding nan; i make sure they are.
Kim/SCa - I think she mentions poetry also, Brad........poems the kids are familiar with?
Lynn - Can you believe these people?
Brad/3 - well, I would like to try it with songs and poems in beginning 2nd next year. do you think this is too old
Kim/SCa - Jan........my new principal wants me to lead a book discussion group!
Jan - Which people, Lynn?
Lynn - Sorry I meant that message for someone here
Brad/3 - At this point I could believe anything, LYNN
Sadie T - Hey Lynn, how long have you been teaching?
naneb/6sped - You know what I did at the beginning of the year. We worte poems, veryshort pattern, fill in the blank type poems and the kids illustrated them. I made books with all of the poems and put them in the baskets. They were a big hit
Jan - Kim, that is fabulous! Which are you starting with?
Lynn - 3 years, you?
Lynn - Brad, he is talking to me
Kim/SCa - The Ruby Payne book......."Framework for Understanding Poverty."
Sadie T - 2 and a half years
Jan - I love all these book groups starting!
Kim/SCa - I am very excited. Kathy B says there is a study guide.............
Lynn - nan you should make a literary magazine
Sadie T - Jan, a bunch of teachers on the beginning teachers board are interested in starting a book discussion too - I think they want to discuss a classroom management book
Jan - I am beginning to think book groups are a powerful form of staff development IF we get to implementation!
naneb/6sped - good idea, Lynn thanks
Jan - Sadie, I noticed that. Good for you in getting that going.
Kim/SCa - Yes, Jan.......I agree. The implementation will be key. I might need to pick your brain from time to time.
Sadie T - Jan I thought you liked theory more than implementation... LOL
Brad/3 - jan is big on theory
Jan - I DO like it better, but I know someone has to implement something. LOL
Jan - Big on theory and also on metaphors
Brad/3 - I love a metaphor, don't you lynn?
Kim/SCa - I gave all my credential students a book last night after they sat for the Final. They were very pleased.
Brad/3 - Which book, KIM?
Sadie T - Kim, what book?
naneb/6sped - Jan, we are opposite sides, I much prefer the implementation. therefore, I prefered STW over MOT, the how over the what??
Brad/3 - GMTA
naneb/6sped - No,, don't start that argument all over again!!! LOL!!
Brad/3 - I was re-reading STW and it has that MOT minilesson in the first few chapters that I talked about
Lynn - I wrote it down, honey,. I will write tomorrow
Jan - I like to PLAN the implementation, but not DO it!
Kim/SCa - I let them pick from about a dozen picture books........Cynthia Rylant, Jane Yolen, TOmie DePaola...............
Sadie T - Cool Kim!!
Lynn - Thanks for the book talk
Jan - Can I be in your class, Kim? I want Rylant.
Sadie T - I've got to go (really this time). Mind if I pack up some frosted ragout in a box to take with me?
naneb/6sped - I love picture books. I bought about a dozen at the thrift shopyesterday .plus a Shel Silverstein book for $3.
Sadie T - Jan... you mean there's a book you don't have?
Jan - Take all you want, Sadie. I'm off to prepare some more. Good night, again!
naneb/6sped - hmmm!!
Brad/3 - sadie, crack me up, take as much as you want
Lynn - I like books. Has anyone read Daniells Steel
Kim/SCa - The extra credit question was this: Who is your Instructor's favorite children's author and WHY is this woman the most prolific and phenomenal children's writer of all time?
Brad/3 - or some Good Jackie Collins, eh lynn?
Lynn - I love Jackie collins
naneb/6sped - and Kim, who is it?
Brad/3 - I give Kim, who? Rylant?
Lynn - Does she write children's books/
Kim/SCa - Yes, BRad..............sheesh........of course, you were not in the class so you wouldn't KNOW........I used her stuff to model MOT strategies over and over.........
naneb/6sped - I know my favorite but I don't think she is the most prolific
naneb/6sped - My favorite is..... Patricia Polacco
Brad/3 - if we;'re talking prolific, danielle steel IS prolific
Lynn - I loved her book about the Titanic
Kim/SCa - naneb........she has written over 60 books.
Lynn - And she has had about 60 husbands too
Brad/3 - Danielle Steele wrote a book about the Titanic?
Kim/SCa - Seems kinda DEEP for her.............
Lynn - I do not think the US accepts mail from you country
Brad/3 - Lynn, crack me up, true, true, and werent' half in prison
Brad/3 - give us some more clues kim
Lynn - brad, yes
Lynn - I gotta go
Lynn - hey it was fun chatting
naneb/6sped - I know I know this but???
Brad/3 - we need more clue-age KIM
Kim/SCa - I like Patricia Polacco's books too, naneb.
naneb/6sped - is she still alive

Brad/3 - books on tape?
Lynn - I like Spinelli
Lynn - Okay thanks
Kim/SCa - I don't know naneb........about Pollacco...............but Rylant is still alive and well.
naneb/6sped - Polacco is still alive
Brad/3 - do you think they're still archiving this chat?
Lynn - Kim, doesn't Rylant write about dead dogs
naneb/6sped - Polacco has a new book just out
Kim/SCa - One book about Dog Heaven, yes.............all other dogs in books have been alive and well.
Lynn - brad, sure these chats are worth saving
Brad/3 - lol kim
naneb/6sped - I did an author study with Polacco books
Lynn - I thought they were all ded
Brad/3 - i was reading the one a few weeks back. Where's Rudy?
Kim/SCa - uh......no.
Lynn - I love the movie Rudy
Brad/3 - what date was the chat about nonfiction textual structures?
naneb/6sped - Polacco's new book is When Lightning Comes In A Jar
Brad/3 - what's it about nan?
Kim/SCa - nan........what is the new book about?
Lynn - What did you find?
naneb/6sped - http://teachers.net/archive/proread053102.html
Kim/SCa - Wasn't there an author's chat with Feldgus and Cardonick awhile back? About Kid Writing?
Brad/3 - thanks for the link to the archived chat, nan
Brad/3 - really, kim?
naneb/6sped - family reunions
Lynn - nan it is very interesting
Kim/SCa - She writes a LOT about families.
Brad/3 - cleary?
naneb/6sped - and she writes about being different and not accepted
Brad/3 - sounds like polacco, nan
Kim/SCa - No Brad, Polacco...........
Brad/3 - who was your person, Kim? Did we guess? Give us clues!
Kim/SCa - naneb, did you read the Ruby Payne book? There were so many people in here earlier that I can't recall who did and did not.............
naneb/6sped - I think I have read pats of it in a class I took but not the entire book
Kim/SCa - I am going to have to re-read it in order to present it. I have never done a book "group" before. Plus, this is a new school with an unfamiliar staff.
Brad/3 - are you serious?
Brad/3 - maybe we're very proud and like to show off
Jan - Can I be in your class, Kim? I want Rylant.
naneb/6sped - welcome back, Jan
Brad/3 - when did jan come back?
Kim/SCa - Yes, Jan......anytime! I would love to have you come talk to my "kids."
Brad/3 - how's that for friendliness
naneb/6sped - Kim, look online for a study guide
Brad/3 - jan, do you have any more beautiful metaphors to share with us
Kim/SCa - I will, naneb......... the whole generational poverty thing is very interesting. I loved the story about the refrigerator...............
Brad/3 - refrigerator?
naneb/6sped - Kim, what is the title
Kim/SCa - Yes. Dr. Payne tells this story about a group of teachers at an elementary school who pitched in and bought this family a refrigerator. The kids were always in school hungry, no jackets, etc.
Brad/3 - thank you, only EXCLUSIVE people allowed in here
Kim/SCa - "A Framework for Understanding Poverty." So anyway........the get the family a fridge thinking they are doing a good thing.
Kim/SCa - A few days go by and then all the kids in the family are absent...........for a WEEK.
Brad/3 - living in the frig? LOL
Kim/SCa - The teachers are worried and everybody is asking and wondering. So...............the kids return to school and the teachers all ask about the absences.
Brad/3 - Danville, Illinois: Home of the Whopper
Kim/SCa - Brad........I thought you lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Brad/3 - You're thinking of Ruby Payne.
Kim/SCa - Anyway......so the kids explain that the family was so stressed out that they went camping.
Kim/SCa - The teachers are perplexed because the family never has any money.
Kim/SCa - The kids explain they paid for the camping trip by.............selling the refrigerator.
Brad/3 - LOL Kim
Brad/3 - why is it a framework, kim?
Brad/3 - you know brad pitt?
Kim/SCa - Well, it is written like a framework...........main points and then supporting ideas. Kinda like a huge powerpoint presentation.
Brad/3 - do you know i've never done powerpoint. they say it's easy; i just never learned
naneb/6sped - Kim, is your school in a high poverty area?
Brad/3 - does he offer suggestions
Kim/SCa - yes.
Brad/3 - is it practical or is it jan
naneb/6sped - bye for tonight, see y'all next week
naneb/6sped - Brad, my 6th graders did powerpoint presentations they turned out awesome!! When we did determining importance in nonfiction using the nonfiction conventions
Brad/3 - one of my goals this summer. is it easy?
Kim/SCa - later.......I gotta run.
Brad/3 - kim, don't go. is dusting home?
