Kim/K-1/Ca - I saw my classroom today. Very excited. Very EMPTY......they are cleaning it.
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, I thought I might change my name on the board from Glenda 1st TN to just Proud Mama. After thinking about it I decided I like having Jessica talk to me
kathyb - Glenda, thanks, I am now BROKE, no Hobby Lobby here!
nan - Congratulations!!! naneb - do you have many doors opening for you?!
brad - Glenda as Proud Mama?
brad - I think we should award Glenda for starting the longest thread ever on the board
naneb - more work - no pay!! typical!!
judy3ca - Kim, how exciting! My furniture is all moved to one side--blocking the cupboards--so I really can't work until they shampoo the carpets.
nan - That's what I thought would happen, naneb
Glenda 1st TN - Kathy, Sorry there is no Hobby Lobby. Are there any hobby or arts stores in your area?
kathyb - I bought pots (and fake ivy), placemats, and chair cushions for my classroom. My carpets are done.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am very confoozled about two Nans. I thought only ONE posted. But .......... oh help ......?
nan - did you pass the first time naneb
brad - did you remember the dishtowels, Kathy?
Michelle/3/or - I can't get in my room until August...and I left a fan in there!
naneb - we do not have carpet, but my room looks wonderful, stripped and waxed, all clean and shiny
judy3ca - kathy, I'm jealous, I want to do some things in my room and the janitors are soooo slow!
brad - What are you doing with the placemats, Kathy?
naneb - Yes, I did nan, thank goodness!
brad - sadie's very indecisive tonight
Kim/K-1/Ca - fake ivy....? for the pond? or are you making a garden?
judy3ca - Yes, Kathy, do the placemats match the dishtowels?
nan - I'm waiting for nov. to come:!@@
Kim/K-1/Ca - (((Sadie Wadie Kadie Ladie...))))
kathyb - Oh, my daughter lives near a Hobby Lobby. I was there 7/5, but left BROKE!
naneb - good luck, nan
Sadie T - Kim, I can't believe you're actually HERE!
brad - What is a Hobby Lobby?
naneb - I was hoping my other bookcloseout order would come before i left on vacation but no luck
Michelle/3/or - I had to empty my shopping cart at bookbargain after realizing I have no extra money
judy3ca - (((Sadie)))
kathyb - Brad, there weren't any MATCHING dishtowels. I will have to look at a SUPER Wal-Mart. LOL!!!
Michelle/3/or - at least I got my professional books before realizing it.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah, yeah, yeah.....tease tease tease........... sheesh.........
brad - Yeah, Sadie, she found the courage to lift up off the couch and waddle on over WITH her Ding Dongs
judy3ca - Oh, Michelle--how terrible!
naneb - better than her Ho HO's!!!
Michelle/3/or - I know...maybe I'll get lucky in Vegas
brad - but kathy, what are placemats for?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Any good resources for finding picture books in Spanish AND on tape?
naneb - judy, we would go into withdrawl without books to buy!!
judy3ca - Michelle, I'm really trying to control my bookbuying! At least running out of money is one solution!
Michelle/3/or - especially sad because I spent several hours at bookbargains
Kim/K-1/Ca - The placemats are for the DAYCORE, Brad.........don't you watch Christopher Lowell?
judy3ca - Kim, do you know that Scholastic has a book club in Spanish? Great prices!
nan - I wish I could find a book bargain store
naneb - I am ntbuying anymore books until I get my school money to spend, i will get about $500 to buy material and I will spend half of it on books
brad - Kim, is he the bald guy who lisps?
Michelle/3/or - the book club at scholastic is slim-pickin's, in my opinion
naneb - I am ntbuying anymore books until I get my school money to spend, i will get about $500 to buy material and I will spend half of it on books
Kim/K-1/Ca - Oh yeah, Judy! I forgot........!
naneb - sorry that went twice it was stuck
nan - I like those big books to use for all ages.
brad - naneb, you're lucky you get money to spend from school
naneb - LOL@Kim!!!
brad - Yeah, where do you get big books?
kathyb - In Mailbox my friend told me about an idea to place a potted plant on each table with a placemat. You are to use those florist sticks for "get well cards" or whatever to hold the "card" for that table. The card can be changed daily or weekly. I will probably post a word family. If they can name a word that rhymes with ... cat, then they can line up.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes, but does he know COLOR....and dahling..... he can MERCHANDISE....seven layers of design.....
Michelle/3/or - at my school, I used to get $1,000 per year, but not anymore
judy3ca - Brad, don't you get any money from your school?
Michelle/3/or - good old days..
naneb - Mississippi has a one cent slaes tax for instructional material, it goes directly to teachers, cannot be spent on anything else
brad - Zero dollares
teach/erin - We only get $300 for all our supplies and must be spent at Office Depot we order online
teach/erin - Last year if we didn't spend it all we could buy and turn in receipts...I bought my easel that way
brad - I asked the principal when I interviewed what my classroom budget was and she looked at me like I was crazy
Glenda 1st TN - My principal gives us $50.00 in our room account to start the year.
naneb - we get some money from special ed too, I order all books and material from the sped department, this money is for extras
judy3ca - Now don't pelt me, but last year we got $800 (three different sources).
kathyb - Kim, I have some great Spanish books in english/spanish on the same page. Also, there is a special award for spanish/english books. I can't think of the award name, but I just saw some of the award winning books this week.
nan - I know that feeling brad
Kim/K-1/Ca - Golly, Glenda.....can he AFFORD it....? $50.......sheesh. Sounds as cheeeep as Brad.
teach/erin - Our PTA is generous and chips in about another $100 in gift certificates to Staples
brad - Judy, what are your sources?
naneb - judy, I end up with nearly that plus if I know i need something special ed will order it over the summer, they order textbooks and software etc.
brad - speaking of DAYCORE, I did buy some books this week for my new house
Kim/K-1/Ca - Our PTA decided to buy wall-mounting T.V.s ..... I about popped a vein. ........I was very unpopular with the LADIES there for awhile.....
Glenda 1st TN - I'm lucky. He lets us have access to our room fee money and BEP money later in the year. Some principals don't let their teachers ever spend this money.
kathyb - With our state grant I got $2000 at the end of this year for books. It sounds like alot, but it went very fast!
brad - Something about Colors for Your Every Mood. I guess I'll have to watch Christopher Lowell. I'm already addicted to HGTV and Trading Spaces
naneb - what is room fee and BEP money?
judy3ca - Brad, one is PTA ($500), one is the district ($150), and I can't remember where the other $150 came from.
teach/erin - Kim, we have wall mounted TVS in every room as standard, they are hooked up to Dukane so the library can show videos to one or all classrooms. I love them
naneb - I like changing rooms and house invaders on BBCAmerica
teach/erin - I love Trading Spaces Brad
brad - I wish Judy; I'm going to have to write some grants I suppose if I ever want to build up my library without going broke
Kim/K-1/Ca - Trading Spaces......... oh man....do they know how to make you lose your lunch or what? Some of those "designs" belong on Comedy Central.
judy3ca - Hi Gail and Rudy!
nan - i liked Lynnette Jennings, but she's off the air now.
Michelle/3/or - no cable here. I miss the History Channel
brad - We have wall-mounted TV/Vcr's in every classroom. Now ask me if they work
Rudy - Hi judy
nan - I love Biography channel
Glenda 1st TN - room fee is the money the parents pay per child. Last year was the first year we didn't have room fees. They will probably be charged again this year because the state is cutting funding.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Uh oh... I dissed Trading Spaces in a room full of fans, huh?
Gail/1/NC - Hi everyone
naneb - We made a list of all the class sets of books we had in our school and it was amazing. No one knew we had so many. We are putting them in tubs in the library
kathyb - Every classroom in my building has a wall-mounted TV with a VCR and it is hooked up to one of the computers, too. That computer is hooked up to the Internet.
judy3ca - Oh, Brad, me, too! (How's that for commas?) I love Trading Spaces and we just got H&G. I love them!
brad - Kim, you and I should do "Trading Classrooms" I know the PERFECT set of dishtowels
Michelle/3/or - I bought about 800 books for my library this year...no wonder I'm broke
naneb - nan, I still get Lynette Jennings
teach/erin - No Kim, I love watching the show, but I don't think I would let them loose in my house
Glenda 1st TN - BEP money is the money the state gives the systems in order to keep student teacher ratio low. I don't know how it all works out.
Sadie T - Glenda why do the parents pay a room fee?
judy3ca - And Brad, I wrote grants the last two years. Little ones ($500) but I got them both.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I don't see the need for T.Vs in a classroom We have so little quality instructional time as it is. The kids get MORE than enough T.V. in my humble opinion.........
nan - naneb - isn't she the best!!!
Gail/1/NC - Nan, we have a central storage area in our media center. I spent 4 days straigthening it out this summer
Michelle/3/or - no one at my school seems to know how to write grants. I'll have to figure it out.
teach/erin - kathy, ours are also hooked up to the computer, I love it for pulling up websites and doing a class lesson on the compouter
Kim/K-1/Ca - Ooooh Brad.......Trading Classrooms? Now THERE is an idea and a half!
brad - Judy, who did you write them to? Maybe you could email me some info?
kathyb - Way to go, Kim. My daughter actually painted her kitchen to look like one done on Trading Spaces, if looks great!
naneb - I have a TV hooked to my computer, I use it all the time
Gail/1/NC - our tvs are used for closed circuit school wide broadcasts too
judy3ca - I'm with Erin! I need the tv for the computer and videos.
naneb - I do Guess The covered Word on the computer and I use powerpoint to introduce lots of units
Kim/K-1/Ca - NOT the RED kitchen that looked like a bordello, Kathy?? Say it ain't so.........
brad - Rumor is though that there will be two smartboards in the building this year. I'd love to lay my hands on those. I agree with you about TV's Kim. I think I used mine two times this year (and once was to watch a movie one of those last days of school.
nan - naneb- What type of classroom do you have?
teach/erin - I don't show many videos, but there are certain Fridays that they are very valuable.
kathyb - We collect room fees in my district, too, but little if any actually comes to me. The district spends it on whatever.
judy3ca - Brad, these grants are from the Packard Foundation and it's local--Northern CA--and I like them because they only want a one-page description.
Michelle/3/or - Trading Classrooms...that would be great. my room is odd-shaped. I can't figure out how best to use the space
naneb - brad, look around for local grants, there are lots of organizations that give $500 grants
Gail/1/NC - we also have a video retrieval system which is great even though I show only 3-4 videos per year. I like knowing it's available
teach/erin - Brad, do you have any education foundations in your area? We have a local one and a city wide one which I have been awarded grants from
Glenda 1st TN - Sadie, The state allows the systems to charge a "room fee" ie $15.00 per child at the beginning of the year to help the teachers and schools cover additional fees, Workbooks, paper, copy paper, art supplies etc. It gets very expensive at the high school level. I've written room fees per class. Some were 20 or 25 dollars. It really adds up.
brad - I think I'm going to look into some this year, Judy, thanks. If you find out of any let me know
Gail/1/NC - Hi Diane
naneb - I teach mostly LD reading and language
diane - hi everybody!
brad - Kim, did you say you're running a bordello, now??
judy3ca - Hi Diane! I'm dying to know what book you used for the choral reading?
kathyb - RED and green and cream. She has even made curtains from the awesome fabric!
Sadie T - Glenda, thanks for explaining the "room fee" thing. I'd never heard of it.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hi diane and gail..........and NO BRAD I did NOT! Pay attention, Math Boy!
diane - hi judy, nocturne by jane yolen
Sadie T - What do you do about students who can't pay?
judy3ca - Brad, check with your district--ours usually knows about grant opportunities.
nan - So do I naneb, and I need to have some of the equipment you have to make it more exciting.
Sadie T - Hi Diane and Gail!
diane - it was fabulous
brad - I WANT to use my TV hooked up to computer, but I'm still looking for the technology in the district (and I don't dare buy it on my own) Hoping those smartboards come through
naneb - I am going to cover my door in fabric and replace my closet doors with curtains
Glenda 1st TN - Sadie, I've already thanked everyone else for being so sweet to Jessica. I wanted to thank you too.
kathyb - Michelle my room is a HEXAGON! And some of the "walls" are movable!
nan - NO
naneb - brad, look into the phone company, I got a $500 grantfrom bellsouth, it was a very easy application
nan - That sounds like something Lynette would do, naneb.
brad - Speaking of Math Boy, Kim, one of the books I bought this week was a professional book on math, (and no, not the one suggested by Roger, although I'd like to peek at that one too)
Sadie T - Glenda, it sounds like Jessica is really doing a great job with her students!
teach/erin - Trading Classrooms in California...you would first have to peruse all the fire regulations before starting
judy3ca - Diane, I love Jane Yolen, but I don't know that title. Oh, boy, another book to buy!
brad - naneb, at school, you're covering your door in fabric?
Gail/1/NC - for the grants, do most of you have large percentage of free lunch to obtain grants?
kathyb - In Iowa if you can't pay the room fee, then you can file for money from child welfare.
Kim/K-1/Ca - True, Erin.......
brad - Judy, one of the books I really like is Tuesday by Weisner. Maybe I'll read that one for the CD. LOL
naneb - yes, Brad it looks really cook
Glenda 1st TN - Sadie, not to brag too much. But she really does do a great job. She is one of those that just comes by it naturally. I've been amazed watching her.
brad - Michelle!!!!
diane - oh judy...it is a BEAUTIFUL book...description of a
Kim/K-1/Ca - I think the more free lunches you have, the better your chances of obtaining the grant.
judy3ca - Gail, no, that doesn't always apply. The small grants are pretty loose.
naneb - this is not working right cook=cool
diane - oops...description of a country night
Kim/K-1/Ca - What CD?
Michelle/3/or - oops
nan - I agree Kim
brad - Michelle!!!!
kathyb - BRAD, what math book did you buy?
diane - too funny brad...
judy3ca - Brad, LOL, are there enough words in Tuesday????
Kim/K-1/Ca - Jane Yolen..........do you know "The Pirate Queens?"
brad - Cognitively Guided Instruction
Gail/1/NC - Kim, that was what I was afraid of. We have only 1% free lunch at my school. That's why we never get any grants
brad - Judy, I have it memorized! LOL
kathyb - Weisner's new book on the 3 little pigs got the Caldecott.
naneb - with bellsouth, you just have to do a project that directly impacts student learning
diane - i don't know that one, kim...
Michelle/3/or - hmmm....I should be able to get grants...we are 100% free lunch
Michelle/3/or - how do you find out about available grants?
teach/erin - gotta go, my son is having an attack of the whines
Kim/K-1/Ca - diane it is an exellent book , rhyming, tells a true story, visually appealing......fun!
naneb - Kim, there is a group of us making a CD of each of us reading a book
judy3ca - Brad, sorry, I get it now (sheepish).
brad - Really, Gail?? Then I should have no problem. We are 100% free lunch
teach/erin - see you guys later....bye
nan - Michelle, there is a lot of money out there for you, but the search is time consuming
Rudy - Gail, I'm in Ohio. Lots of free lunches and several grants. one was $187,00 spread over 3 years for literacy needs.
Kim/K-1/Ca - oh........
Michelle/3/or - i was disappointed that I missed the boat on the CD thing
judy3ca - Bye, Erin!
naneb - maybe we will do another one sometime
kathyb - CGI has some math textbooks, too. I don't remember which ones.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I didn't know about the CD. Sounds like fun.
brad - So, all this I spend arguing with Kim about Ho Ho's and dishtowels, I could've been getting grants??!!
brad - kathy, then you're familiar with it?
Sadie T - See Brad, you WERE wasting valuable chat space.
nan - you got that right brad!!
diane - has anyone read "what you know by heart?"
Gail/1/NC - naneb, finished my tape tonight and put it safely in the envelope. Will mail at post office tomorrow. Will be there when you return
Michelle/3/or - I'm reading it right now!
brad - Where is my good friend Beth tonight, anyway
Michelle/3/or - Started it last night
brad - diane, I was actually the first to own that book. LOL.
judy3ca - BRB
naneb - I can't wait to hear it, Gail
nan - Please tell me about this book.
Michelle/3/or - I skimmed through it, reading here and there, now I've started reading it from the front
naneb - I can't wait to hear Sharon read Barn Dance
kathyb - Only some, Brad. Some of the things in my math book I don't understand (first grade) and someone said that they thought it was based on CGI.
Michelle/3/or - I'm really glad I bought it.
brad - what are you thinking of it Michelle?
diane - ummm...congrats? lol
Sadie T - Hi CJ
Michelle/3/or - It has really gotten me to reflect more deeply about myself as a writer
brad - interesting, kathy, i'll keep you updated
CJ - Hi all, I've had a friend telling me about how great your chats are here...thought I would drop in. What book are you discussing tongiht
diane - i loved it! i have been logging hours at the scholastic site looking at author interviews for minilessons
Michelle/3/or - I realized....I don't think I was ever taught how to write fiction
Gail/1/NC - Hi CJ
brad - i think it's excellent
Glenda 1st TN - Hi CJ, Welcome.
brad - kim, however, probably isnt' PASSIONATE about it. LOL
kathyb - Thanks, Brad. I would appreciate that.
Michelle/3/or - I started thinking about how I can write more as a writer.
brad - Not very well, anyway, huh Michelle? I feel the same way
Rudy - Hi CJ.
Michelle/3/or - my journals are mostly just me talking to myself
diane - i've been doing the writing project this month...this is the perfect text to take this experience and turn it into curriculum.
Glenda 1st TN - Cj I don't think anyone has picked just one book to discuss. We just toss out what ever is on our mind. Some times, Brad gets carried away.
Michelle/3/or - I am getting inspired
brad - Kim, Ho Ho's keeping you quiet, or just busy wiping off the sweat?
diane - i wouldn't have ordered it, brad, if you hadn't recommended it
diane - i wouldn't have ordered it, brad, if you hadn't recommended it
Michelle/3/or - to look at the world in a different way
diane - oops...sorry for double post
CJ - I am logged in from AB, Canada - it is scorching hot up here today 90 or more
brad - oh, well I'm touched, diane. lol
naneb - diane, if you have a computer hooked to a TV then you can visit the author's website, some of them are wonderful
brad - speaking of canada, where's alta rose?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am halfway through "What You Know By Heart." I like it a LOT.
diane - nan...do you mean so the kids can view?
nan - HI CJ - nan from Illinois
Glenda 1st TN - CJ, Is that unusually hot for your area?
brad - but are you PASSIONATE kim?
CJ - So What is "What you know by heart? about
nan - Yes, I need a TV hook-up to computer in my room
Glenda 1st TN - Has anyone heard anything on Alta Rose's son and the lump on his head?
diane - we're in the middle of a heat wave here in oregon...third day in a row of near 100 degrees
Michelle/3/or - It's about designing your writing curriculum...
diane - that's a great idea, nan, i have an in focus i can use, but i hardly ever think about it
naneb - yes diane, Patricia Polacco has a wonderful site, shows where she writes and tells the story of how an idea becomes a published book
nan - CJ - I am trying to find out - through this chat room
Michelle/3/or - yes, diane, isn't the heat horrible?
Sadie T - Hi Jan!
Jan - Hello, everyone!
kathyb - I think the weather is really strange this year!
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am breathing heavily over it............Brad
Michelle/3/or - I went to the movies today to escape
brad - I swear Kim, I'm going to do "Trading Classrooms" with you and I'm thinking of a Japanese sushi bar theme for you
diane - that's fabulous! i do a patricia polacco author study
Michelle/3/or - anyway...it's about teaching writing as a WRITER yourself
Kim/K-1/Ca - ((((Hi Jan)))
diane - michelle, where in oregon are you?
Jan - It is hot here, like everywhere else. And, I'm cleaning closets!
CJ - Yes - very unusual - anything in the 90s is considered a heat wave
Michelle/3/or - Woodburn
Gail/1/NC - Hi Jan
Michelle/3/or - you know woodburn?
Kim/K-1/Ca - it's okay, really.......... it sounds like a great idea. somebody was really thinkin' on that one!
Jan - Hi, Kim...Sadie....Brad, Gail, etc
kathyb - WAY TO GO, BRAD!
Sadie T - Jan, you are ALWAYS cleaning closets.
naneb - diane it is www.patriciapolacco.com
diane - yep...i am in hillsboro...teach in gales creek
kathyb - Kim loves Chinese Take-out!
naneb - Jan Brett has a good site too
Michelle/3/or - oh..,.my aunt and uncle teach in Hillsboro
diane - thanks nan
Kim/K-1/Ca - I'm thinking Japanese is the way to go too........... low tables, rice paper.............
CJ - So ... writing about what we know is close to our hearts? An Anne of Green Gables line..perhaps.
Michelle/3/or - do you know Leroy or Janet Schultz?
Jan - Sadie, you said it! I'm throwing everything away.
diane - sorry michelle, i don't
brad - Perhaps Paper Fans dangling from the ceiling, with some lithographs on the wall of geisha girls
Kim/K-1/Ca - I want geisha guys, please...........
Jan - Anne of Green Gables! My favorite!
judy3ca - I'm back. Hi Jan!!!!!
diane - too funny, kim
naneb - I love Anne too!
kathyb - Debbie Miller has low tables and little chair cushions on the floor. I got some chair custions for the floor today!
Jan - Hi, Judy...
TessaTL - Hi everyone
naneb - I have tables in my room
diane - kathy, i went to a restaurant on monday that had low tables and cushions...i kept falling over!!!
brad - Jan, have we found any evidence yet of how the PEBC picked these particular strategies out of Pearson's work
Jan - I visited Anne's house on Prince Edward Island. What a thrill!
CJ - Isn't that what Gil told Anne to do -... write about what is close to her heart... perhaps not what we know by heart.. is that the premise of that book?
brad - i just keep thinking, in what order these strategies, and which strategies?
Kim/K-1/Ca - good connection, cj
brad - LOL, he's quite the prodigy there Jan
kathyb - Diane, NO LOW TABLES for me... I wouldn't be able to get back up!
Sadie T - Hi, Hunter Fisher!
judy3ca - ROFLOL, are you past "goo, goo," Hunter?
Hunter Fisher - Yes, I'm pwacticing my weading swategies.
Jan - Ah, yes---HUNTER! And, he's doing well with his strategies, too, I want you to know.
naneb - kathy, that's what I was thinking!!LOL
Gail/1/NC - kathyb- I bought lots of lamps for my classroom this summer and put tablecloths on some of the tables. I have clothline hung across window for charts. Everyone is impressed so far
kathyb - My students will love the chair cushions and I think that they will be better than bean bag chairs.
judy3ca - kathy, me too--save the knees!
diane - well...at least i got a work out while eating by having to pick myself up!! lol
Jan - Hunter is reading MOT!
Michelle/3/or - we aren't allowed lamps in our room
naneb - I had a tablecloth but it was just in the way, we were always taking it off so the students could write
Michelle/3/or - or couches, or other cloth furniture
judy3ca - Gail, sounds wonderful!
Hunter Fisher - Yes, I love MOT.
brad - i'd like to get some lamps
Jan - HUNTER DOES NOT SPEAK BABY TALK!
brad - clipboards, naneb
Gail/1/NC - I love the feeling the lamps give in the room. So much better atmosphere
brad - Jan's a feisty mother
CJ - Has anyone used the "rain gutters" for bookshelves?
brad - I think I'd like it too gail
Michelle/3/or - really? I was thinking about a tablecloth...I guess I won't
brad - It'd really be cool to do candles
kathyb - I have one table lamp, but I need to find a plugin that isn't being used by the computer, TV, VCR, etc. LOL!!!
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am going to pay more attention to atmosphere. I haven't been able to up to this point.......I have always shared with such a packrat.
Hunter Fisher - Weally? I'm twying not to speak baby talk, but it's hawd.
naneb - I have them to go up when I get back from Mexico
Gail/1/NC - I did find a wonderful deal for 4 lamps-1 floor lamp and 3 table lamps at Target for $48. Really nice
brad - michelle, do the tablecloths
naneb - no,no,no, no candles too dangerous!!
Michelle/3/or - me too, Kim
TessaTL - I have kids that might set the room on fire with candles-just to see what happens
Jan - I'd like to use rain gutters for RAIN. We've had 4 inches here in 12 months!
naneb - no,no,no, no candles too dangerous!!
CJ - How do you plug in the lamps without fearing students will trip over them
brad - that's it, Kim, i'm feng shui'ing your entire classroom
kathyb - Michelle, I have the greatest teak garden bench. Just right for me and two students!
Michelle/3/or - we aren't allowed candles at all. I was amazed to read about them in RWM
naneb - It is pouring rain as I write!! my cat was hiding from the thunder all day long
Sadie T - Hi Gitti!
Michelle/3/or - Kathy...that's a good idea! I'll look into it
Gail/1/NC - I have lots of outlets around my room. My building is just 6 yrs old.
CJ - Yikes, are you in Colorodo Jan? I understand that they are in great need of rain. We are too...
naneb - I had a student light a cigarette in homeroom one day!
gitti - hi there sadie
Jan - CJ, it's the teachers who fall over the lamps! I am the master!
kathyb - CJ, my friends do and LOVE THEM, but don't forget to add extra supports. Books get heavy.
brad - I thought that was you floating by on the roof on CNN the other day, Jan!
diane - hi gitti
Gail/1/NC - Candles would be so dangerous
gitti - I'm a new02-03 canidate
TessaTL - I have only 2 outlets in my whole room
gitti - hello diane and all
Jan - Not Colorado, southern California
diane - oh tessa, i can't imagine only 2 outlets
kathyb - No CANDLES!
TessaTL - my building is 125 years old
Gail/1/NC - I also added the special plug for 6 plugs in one outlet at a few places.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I have tripped over my own pocket chart stand a dozen times this year.
gitti - just stopped by to get some tips
gitti - so far no candles..I've got it..LOL
Kim/K-1/Ca - Good for you, Gitti........ I wish you luck.
Gail/1/NC - Kim, I trip over my own feet
Michelle/3/or - I trip over chart stands, desks, carpets...
naneb - Gail, my father would have a fit, he is an electrician and he says those multi plug outlets are dangerous, they cause fires
brad - I kept leaning against the overhead cart, and then falling back when it moved like a dork. My kids even started saying, "Mr. Johnson, you always do that!"
Sadie T - Gitti, you're not a teacher yet? What do you want to teach?
TessaTL - gitti-at interviews ask how many outlets...lol
Kim/K-1/Ca - oh, yes.........carpet edges! Backpacks! Jackets! Kids' feet.............
Jan - People attend my workshops solely to see how many times I will fall over the overhead cord!
Sadie T - Good question, Tessa...
gitti - OH yes..I'm a teacher, doing the national certification thing
brad - I know, naneb, we have one right here in our living room and I fear it'll just start up any day.
Michelle/3/or - yeah...and the kids feel so guilty when i trip over their feet....I try to tell them it's me, not them
gitti - LOL outlets...least of my worries, days we don't have electricity
diane - gitti, how's that going? i hope to do it after this year
CJ - Yes... that is an excellent interview question... my classroom only has 2 outlets and the school is only 35 years old.. I was in a portable thought.
Gail/1/NC - Jan, I trip over my overhead cord almost daily too
gitti - I'm intent on passing the first time..I must I must
judy3ca - I trip over kids, but my worst embarrassment is that I startle easily. I won't realize that an adult is watching us and then, when I see him/her, I jump a mile.
gitti - so the outlets would be deal breaker cj?
Jan - Brad, my trick, too! Those overheads are dangerous
brad - i usually manage to miss my overhead cord. it's my kids who trip over that.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I want to come to one of your workshops, Jan. But not BTSA. (shudder)
naneb - I trip on things all of the time too especially tables and bookbags
CJ - I would say so..
TessaTL - More likely they would be the deal sealer!
diane - lol, judy, i'm a blusher...
judy3ca - Me, too!!!! I wanna come to Jan's workshops!
Hunter Fisher - You should come, Kim, It's fun to watch her trip over the cords.
brad - I have outlets all along 3 out of the 4 walls. I just have to remember to switch them on.
Jan - Kim, it's a laugh a minute!
kathyb - Jan, where can we find a schedule?
judy3ca - Diane, wouldn't we make a fun team, blushing and jumping?
TessaTL - what workshops do you teach Jan?
brad - unfortunately, the computer jacks are only in one wall, so not much room for moving them around
Jan - HUNTER, GET TO BED!
Gail/1/NC - Jan, where are your workshops?
Kim/K-1/Ca - The NAME alone sends me.......BITS A BitsA...........LOL
brad - I would pay good money to see jan speak, and everyone KNOWS how cheap I am
diane - quite a picture, judy lol
Hunter Fisher - But I like chatting with your friends, Mommy.....
naneb - brb, need a coke
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hunter.......are you allowed up this late?
Jan - That kid is entirely too precocious! He was just born last week!
kathyb - My building is 26 years old and until 5 years ago the outlet were boxes ABOVE the floor level and not sunk in!
brad - Feisty Mama Jan at it again
Kim/K-1/Ca - Great....can't keep his head up yet but he's reading MOT.........
CJ - oh great... not only do you trip over cords but the plug boxes too.
brad - Jan, I'm thinking about heading over to our university library next week (in the middle of all this packing) and checking out some original research in your honor.
judy3ca - brb
Jan - Gail, mostly in Redondo Beach, California and at UC, Irvine.
brad - I just can't see subscribing to some of these scholarly journals, and I'm looking for some more Pearson and Dole stuff
Hunter Fisher - Wow Brad, I'm impressed. Can I be you when I grow up?
Jan - Brad, I am honored!
Glenda 1st TN - Does everyone use their overhead projector on a cart? Does anyone use it on a table?
Gail/1/NC - Oh, darn. I wish you were closer or would come to the southeast
Kim/K-1/Ca - Brad......I have a "subscription to Reading Research Quarterly."
CJ - cart
darsh - Hi to everyone
Jan - No! Hunter will NOT be Brad when he grows up!
naneb - cart
Michelle/3/or - I have a subscription to RRQ and The Reading Teacher
brad - only if you're incredibly intelligent Hunter, can you aspire to be me, and even then, I'm just not sure
diane - hi darsh
Glenda 1st TN - Hi darsh
Michelle/3/or - can't keep up with more than that
TessaTL - Every time I put my overhead on a desk it blocks someones view
CJ - hi darsch
Hunter Fisher - Bye-bye
brad - He already asks too many questions, huh, Jan?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hi darsh and maranello.........
judy3ca - Glenda, cart.
Glenda 1st TN - Bye Hunter, sweet dreams
Gail/1/NC - Hi darsch
kathyb - Glenda, I use my overhead on a cart and a friend of mine from years ago made a cart caddy for my overhead supplies. It is almost worn out! LOL!
Kim/K-1/Ca - nighty night Hunter........read yourself a nice story
CJ - bye hunter
Maranello - Greetings from CA
brad - I'm kinda tall, so I had to put it up on a cart, cause I was killing my back when I put it on a desk
Jan - Hunter has snuggled down in his crib with Wondrous Words.
Glenda 1st TN - Hi Maranello.
diane - hi maranello
TessaTL - Is anyone using Guiding Readers and Writers 3-6?
Sadie T - Hi Maranello!
darsh - I'm teacher from India but right now I'm in USA, any one has an idea who is sponsering foreign teachers ?
Michelle/3/or - I want to find a cart that's lower so my kids can use the OH too
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hunter has GOOD taste in reading material. Speaking of TASTE, does he chew on the covers?
Glenda 1st TN - I use a cart too. I was wondering if Debbie Miller used a cart. She talks about the children editing on the overhead.
Michelle/3/or - I'm using it, Tessa
judy3ca - Tessa, I use it as a resource.
Jan - Hi, Maranello. Is it hot where you are in CA?
Kim/K-1/Ca - If you speak Spanish Darsh.....L.A. Unified will fly you in on a magic carpet.
diane - tessa, i am...except i use month by month phonics for word work
darsh - hi Gail
judy3ca - Hi Alta Rose!
Alta Rose - Hi everyone!
Sadie T - Darsh, I don't know about sponsering foreign teachers, but what did you teach in India?
Michelle/3/or - same with my district
Sadie T - Hi Alta Rose!
brad - I have stepstool so kids can use overhead on cart
diane - hi alta rose
CJ - hi Alta Rose
Jan - Hi. Alta Rose!
TessaTL - My classroom is going to be the test room for implementing it in our building
Michelle/3/or - I do too....MbyM phonics
naneb - Hi Alta Rose
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hi Alta Rose!! How is your son?
darsh - Sadie, I teach Mathematics, Science and Statistics......as I'm holding Masters in Mathematics as well holding Masters in Computer Science
Alta Rose - Hi everyone!
brad - alta rose, I was asking about you earlier
darsh - Hi Kim, hey I'm an Indian......I don't know Spanish
Gail/1/NC - Hi Alta Rose
diane - i have to admit, tessa, i need to come up with a better strategy for the reader response journals
naneb - I do Month by Month phonics too
Michelle/3/or - I really liked the Reading Response Journals, but it didn't work as well for my lowest kiddos
naneb - I do Month by Month phonics too
Sadie T - Darsh I'm impressed by your math... especially the statistics. I'm statistically challenged.
TessaTL - the reader response journals look like a lot of writing for me
darsh - Hi Alta
Alta Rose - I see there are a lot of people here tonight!
Glenda 1st TN - Ah Darsh, we thought you were multi talented. This is from one who only speaks english.
diane - i had the same issue, michelle
naneb - this thing keeps freezing
TessaTL - I read this book, and wonder where am I going to find all the time they talk about
CJ - What about using a sketch journal or letting your lower kids use drawings with details.
diane - tessa, they are...but it's a great way to integrate writing and reading...plus they have a week to complete it
Glenda 1st TN - I'm not having problems with it freezing. Just not posting after I hit enter.
Michelle/3/or - I really enjoyed the conversations my kids and I had this year through those journals
darsh - Yes, glenda I'm multi talented........I know so many langes but my hard luck i don't know spanish
kathyb - Glenda, I love to let my kids edit on the overhead. But, I have to be careful with a chair for them to use to reach it. In F&P the overhead is on the floor and only for a small group to use. Not the whole class thing. Maybe she has two.
Jan - Hi. Alta Rose!
Glenda 1st TN - Darsh. Where are you wanting to teach.
kathyb - CJ, one teacher in my building uses photos and the kids write captions like for a newspaper. Later it turns into an article.
judy3ca - nan, glad you're back
darsh - Sadie, I love Statistics
naneb - lost my connection, it is storming here
Alta Rose - Let's try this again! Good evening, everyone!
Gail/1/NC - send the rain to NC, Nan. We haven't had rain in months
TessaTL - On my kitchen table right now I have Guided Reading, Art of Teaching Writing, Non-fiction Craft Lessons, MOT, STW , and all my manuals. I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed
diane - hi again, alta rose
Glenda 1st TN - Alta Rose, how is your son. If you posted this earlier. I missed it.
CJ - hi Alta Rose... is it storming where you are?
naneb - Hi Alta Rose!!
brad - I want to make the PVC chart stand to hold chart paper, cause I want to do more of that than the overhead this year.
judy3ca - Alta Rose!!!! We all want to know about your son, please??????
darsh - Glenda, actually i landed in USA on H1 visa called as temporary working visa and that's valid for only computer professional but i want to come back to my original field (teaching), right now i'm in PA, i don't have any constraint for relocation if i get chance to work
Alta Rose - CJ! I'm glad you made it! Hey everyone, CJ was my son's teacher this year!
brad - Tessa, sounds like you have the right materials though
Alta Rose - Better ask CJ, Judy! Lol!
Alta Rose - No, CJ, are you getting rain!
Michelle/3/or - one of my colleagues made a PVC chart stand. It worked really well.
diane - i know the feeling, tessa, i am still trying to finish wondrous words so that i can start creating writers
Jan - For Pete' sake - I keep getting thrown off his board!
judy3ca - Brad, I have 2 PVC chart stands that my husband put together, but they're for hanging charts. Are you going to make a PVC easel?
TessaTL - love it all, and have used most of it in some form. I'm trying to make a long term plan using all this good stuff
Glenda 1st TN - Darsh with your math skills, you might have some luck. I don't know how you would go about checking out around the country.
CJ - No... oh I wish.... I am dying - the humidity is so high.. I feel my eyelids sticking together.
darsh - I'm in this country for last 1.5 yr and other side i don't have single relative over here so sometimes i face tought time even just to get some guideline
Jan - Not "his" board, "THIS" board
brad - OH, maybe you can't make it then, judy, that's what I thought it was
kathyb - Brad, I found a GREAT two bar (adjustable) clothes cart. It is metal and holds up to 1st graders. My PVC chart holder fell apart after one year. This double bar is great with more flexibility.
TessaTL - Wondrous Words-haven't started on that one, but have read all of your posts on the prof read board. So I have to go get it.
Sadie T - Jan, is Hunter asleep?
CJ - So when does your son see the specialist?
Michelle/3/or - If you speak Russian, we could use you here!
naneb - Brad, go to Walmart and buy a clothes rack for $10.00 much sturdier
brad - i'm waiting that great wal-mart sale everyone talks about. I need pocket charts.
Jan - Hunter is reading "Wondrous Words." Very literate, that kid!
judy3ca - Brad, LOL, I have no idea--I was asking you.
Alta Rose - We haven't heard the date, yet, CJ.
diane - oh, i bet michelle...do you speak russian?
naneb - they have them right now Brad, you might have to search a little but I found them this week
darsh - glenda, i don't know how to findout work for me ? even i'm holding indian citizen ship so i don't know who sponser foreign teachers, if any one knows pl. feel free to write me at darshn70@yahoo.com
brad - naneb, what section?
CJ - What am I missing ...what is the deal with Hunter in bed?
Gail/1/NC - Nan, I agree. I've had my clothes rack for 4 years and it's great. I move it all around too with its wheels
brad - i'm pocket chart fanatic (KIM, are you taking notes for our Trading Classrooms?)
naneb - you will have to search, I found them in the summer section down from school supplies so, just search every aisle
Gail/1/NC - Brad, that's what I use my rack for--pocket charts
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes, Brad.....pocket charts, like, EVERYWHERE...........but we'll MAKE our own.
TessaTL - lol I'll e-mail TLC for you guys
Michelle/3/or - no...I speak French, which does me no good here
brad - naneb, I'm not the fanatic shopper you all are!! LOL
Jan - Hunter is the mascot of this chat room.
CJ - Is Trading Classrooms a new series like "Trading Spaces?"
naneb - I am going to get one to use for status of the class during writer's workshop
Gail/1/NC - You can find racks at Walmart or Target in section where laundry baskets storage stuff
brad - and get the rotund bearded guy to paint a mermaid on one of them, KIM
judy3ca - I like Frank!
Sadie T - We WANT a new serious about Trading Classrooms. Except that Brad can't do mine.
naneb - I just hang the chart on my whiteboard, I have a set of moveable hooks
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes, CJ....... Brad and I are going to be on the pilot series. He is going to "feng shui" MY room with a Japanese theme. I am going to lots of pocket charts and posty notes all over his room.
brad - Every time I turned around last year, I was thinking, "I need a pocket chart for that"
brad - clip art posty notes, kim
TessaTL - I did that last year during writer's workshop. It was wonderful 1st semester, but 2nd semester I should have given it more attention, mini-lessons
naneb - I wouldn't let Frank do my house though
diane - michelle, i took a year of russian in college...i'm afraid all i remember is "i am a construction worker" and "i love you"
Kim/K-1/Ca - I don't care for Frank.......something is not quite RIGHT about that guy..........
brad - I have hooks on my chalkboard too, nan, That pocket chart's for my word wall activities mostly, but occasionally houses my daily schedule LOL. I need more pocket charts
Michelle/3/or - lol, diane!
judy3ca - Kim, and don't forget the "I love Lucy (Calkins)" bumper stickers for all over Brad's room.
CJ - Does Brad teach middle school?
TessaTL - Frank would put suns and flowers that we painted all over-hey I already do that!
Jan - I made about 500 post-it notes, thanks to Brad!
Gail/1/NC - I use 3 pocket charts daily - 2 on whiteboard and 1 on chart stand.
Michelle/3/or - did you use that glue stick stuff, Jan?
naneb - I do making words with my pocket chart and brand name phonics too
brad - Hey, Judy, haven't I already taken enough flak for my Calkins-love? LOL
kathyb - I hang pocket charts over my tall bookcases to hide what is under them!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Oh yes........we will have a SHRINE to Lucy.
Michelle/3/or - I couldn't figure out how to do the sticky notes in an expedient manner, so I gave up
brad - OH, good grief. NO HUNTER< YOU CAN"T BE ME
darsh - There are 22 different langes in India, I can speak atleast 15 langes out of this one and offcourse English
Hunter Fisher - I've finished Wondrous Words. It was good.
TessaTL - LOL-in my hall (at home) my kids have one of my pocket charts hanging up. They found old sentence strips, and have been writing away. It funny!
CJ - what is wondrous words about?
Jan - I haven't got to Office Max, but I am going to do the glue stick. I can make a lot more with the right tools. Brad's method is a little slow
judy3ca - Brad, never enough flack!
brad - don't forget i like regie too
Hunter Fisher - Wondrous Words is a book about writing.
Jan - Hunter is learning to write with text structures
Kim/K-1/Ca - Of course.........the GoddessHead Shrine. Lucy, Katie,Regie, and Nancie.
Gail/1/NC - kathyb, that's a good idea for pocket chart. I have a bookcase I was going to cover the back with fabric. This will be much simpler
brad - a prophet in his own homeland is never appreciated
Michelle/3/or - I like Regie Routman...something about Calkins' Art of Teaching Reading reminds me of Routman
Glenda 1st TN - Brad and Nan, what type of hooks do you use on your white board to hold up your charts?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hunter, did you make any text-self connections?
Jan - Routman is in trouble in California
CJ - A lady that used to teach in our school used broadcloth to cover all her bulletin boards vs. paper.
judy3ca - Okay, confession, in addition to loving books, I too am a pocket chart fanatic. I have 4 permanently hanging on the walls, 1 on the back of my easel, and 2 more I bring out and put on the whiteboard when I need them.
brad - well, michelle, they're about the same size and weight, and cost the same too. LOL
naneb - I have a metal strip that they slide on, they came with the chalkboard that is under the whiteboard
Michelle/3/or - really? why is she in trouble?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Why, Jan?
TessaTL - why Jan?
Hunter Fisher - Connections are hard for me because I don't have a lot of background knowledge yet.
CJ - bright blues/ greens/ etc. I thought it was a great idea... less fading. ripping/ and staple holes.
judy3ca - Jan, why is Routman in trouble?
Glenda 1st TN - I use cloth on my b.boards. I also covered the back of a bookcase too. Staple gun was a must for the bookcase.
naneb - Hunter, you have no schema!!
Michelle/3/or - Yeah, Brad, I was wondering if my connection had to do with the size of the book
Kim/K-1/Ca - Good point, Hunter...now let mommy tell us about Regie.
Gail/1/NC - CJ , I just covered one whiteboard with black fabric for my word wall and put a metallic red border around it. It's striking and so easy to read
brad - WISH I had whiteboard, the hooks were already on my chalkboard when I got in the room. They slide along the metal strip (if you force them), but they were there when I got there
kathyb - I use fadeless paper on my bulletin boards, but I have to buy it myself. It really lasts!
Jan - Routman came here to present in several places and bad-mouthed California through the whole thing. She was banned by the state board of ed. She returned just this April...and did the SAME thing!
kathyb - Jan, do tell more. What about Regie?
Alta Rose - I use fadeless paper, too, Kathy.
naneb - brad, I put up the whiteboard myself, tile board from Lowes and they cut it to size, we put it up with liquid nails and screws
Kim/K-1/Ca - Oh.........she told it like it IS, huh?
Jan - Hunter needs to spend his time with schema instead of reading Wondrous Words.
judy3ca - What did she criticize, Jan?
CJ - great idea?
brad - I used clearance fabric on my bb's too. Had enough purple left over, I just threw it over the meeting table in the back of the room. (It's no dishtowel, though)
darsh - Friends, I got to go.........but pl. let me know at darshn70@yahoo.com if any one knows that which school or placement agencies or college sponser foreign teachers with USA teaching certification.......bye bye
naneb - my word wall is black too, it is the first thing people notice
Glenda 1st TN - I have those sliding hooks. But they don't fit my pocket chart. Do you think I could use those shower curtain hooks that close like a diaper pin?
CJ - so how did you get it to stay on the whiteboard?
TessaTL - O.k. was it unfound or truth no one wants to admit
judy3ca - Glenda, I use those suction cup hooks to hold pocket charts to my whiteboard.
Gail/1/NC - those sliding hooks over my board are for maps and overhead screen
brad - very interesting about regie? What was she bad-mouthing?
Jan - That's all I know about Regie. Many teachers were very offended, though. After her April appearance, she quite possibly will not be back for another 5 years!
Michelle/3/or - I use fabric on all my bb's. I have one that looks like a sky with clouds in it
brad - no maps in my room, had to hunt for overhead screen. brought in own maps
Gail/1/NC - CJ - I used tons of masking tape on the board and its been up since last week of May and no slippage.
Sadie T - Hi Bluebelle.
Kim/K-1/Ca - GREAT IDEA, Judy! You just solved a problem for me.
Jan - Regie criticized the way reading was taught in CA. Not sure what specifically, but it was not appreciated.
Alta Rose - Yes, I did. Thank you for asking. We are waiting for an appointment with the specialist. We are encouraged by the fact that both the doctor and the resident came to the same conclusion--They think it's not serious, but my doctor is sending him to the specialist only because of how I discovered it. (I closed my eyes to go to sleep and visualized him with a bump.) So my doctor doesn't want to take the chance of ignoring any possible worries. Right now we're not too worried, but will be glad when we know for sure.
Michelle/3/or - I use a royal blue felt background for my Word Wall....but have trouble keeping it up on the wall..
Bluebelle - naneb....what size is your whiteboard? How much did it cost? Is it magnetic? And please excuse my manners, Hello, Everybody!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Wow, Alta....... wow.
Jan - Brad, and they wonder why American kids don't know geography!
judy3ca - am I back?
TessaTL - wow Alta Rose
brad - Hey bluebelle gave me an idea. What if I buy that white showerboard, and put magnets on the back and put it over my chalkboard. I bet the janitors would let me do that, cause I could just take it down if I want.
naneb - I used showerboard from Lowes to cover my chalkboard, It is almost 2 sheets long so about 14 feet, it is not magnetic, I wish it was
Michelle/3/or - I put Velcro....lots of it...but it doesn't stick to the brick wall well
diane - arghh...just got email from book closeouts...got the 21 day shipping message... ):
judy3ca - Kim, yay! Glad I finally said something useful, LOL.
Gail/1/NC - Michelle, possibly it's the weight of the fabric. My fabric is extremely light and magnetic tape holds up my word wall words through it
brad - LOL, Jan, I just put up my own maps.
TessaTL - great idea Brad. I wonder how many magnets you would need
naneb - it cost less than $20 to do the board
Bluebelle - naneb...thanks!
Alta Rose - Whoops-Should have read, "Dr. doesn't want to take chance of ignoring any possible warnings."
brad - why put fabric up at all. I just magnetized my words and put them up. The green is sufficient. I manipulate mine so much anyway.
Michelle/3/or - I want to be able to use the felt...if it's down when i get back in the room, I may have to give up
judy3ca - Alta Rose, we'll keep thinking the best for him.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah, Brad.......but you would have to BUY showerboard.........as in SPEND MONEY. You can't go to Home Depot and lick the shower board in hopes they will give it to you.
brad - judy, you're too hard on yourself. You're ALWAYS saying something useful
Sadie T - Wow, Alta, that's scary. I'm glad they think it's okay!!
naneb - Bluebell, we bought enough showerboard to do 3 chalkboards and they only charged us for one so it didn't cost us much at all but it shoud have cost about $20
CJ - Our whiteboards are not magnetized - that would certainly make things easier.
Alta Rose - Thanks, Judy!
brad - (Kim thinks I never spend money. Wish she'd tell my wife)
Michelle/3/or - I don't have lots of board space, that's why I don't use it for the Word Wall.
TessaTL - how old is your son Alta?
Alta Rose - He is 9. CJ, here in the chatroom, taught him this year!
brad - do you use board, Michelle?
TessaTL - I will put him in my prayers
naneb - I covered my other chalkboardwith acoustical ceiling tile and that is covered in black paper for my word wall and Nifty 50 words
brad - brb
Jan - Alta Rose, what a worry for you. Keep us posted.
kathyb - Well, this has been great, but I am getting tired. See you next week. Bye...
Michelle/3/or - hm? I have 2 white boards in my room..
CJ - Did you mention the new books we picked up at Scholars Choice by Sciezka (sp?) new chapter books for 8-11 year olds> Has anyone else read them/
diane - night kathy
Bluebelle - naneb....how did you attach the acoustical tile?
naneb - bye, kathy
Alta Rose - No, I didn't mention them, CJ.
naneb - liquid nails and screws and washers
Kim/K-1/Ca - I used acoustic "sound board" on the ones in my last classroom. But this new one has a new looking chalkboard that I won't need. I think I will cover it with a pocket chart or two...
TessaTL - So funny I read all your posts on the message boards, so I feel like I know you guys. However, I really only posted on the early elem board.
Alta Rose - Night, Kathy!
CJ - liquid nails??
Michelle/3/or - what's liquid nails?
brad - why acoustical tile?
naneb - I love my word wall it is really bright, I printed the words on colored card stock in really bright colors
Sadie T - Tessa, you should join us posting on the message board too.
Bluebelle - naneb....what are liquid nails?
diane - do you mean time warp trio, cj?
Glenda 1st TN - Tessa, glad you joined us.
naneb - cheap brad
Kim/K-1/Ca - Liquid Nails is the Mother of All Glue Sticks.
judy3ca - Tessa, well, join us on the chatboard, too!
naneb - construction adhesive that you use a gun thing to apply like caulk
brad - there's no need for name calling, naneb
Gail/1/NC - Nan, did you have the black word wall with colorstock words last year?
naneb - LOL@brad
Kim/K-1/Ca - You can stick push pins into sound board.......it is like a bulletin board surface.
naneb - yes, Gail
Michelle/3/or - maybe if I string a wire across the wall and attach the felt to it, that would help?
CJ - Yes, I believe that is the name of one of them.. Diane.. have you heard of them ..read.. do your kids/students enjoy?
Sadie T - Hi Woocar
naneb - I am using the same words this year
brad - thanks kim, now I understand why
Michelle/3/or - my son loves the Time Warp Trio
woocar - Hi Sadie
Michelle/3/or - he's a real history buff, though
Bluebelle - Thanks for the great ideas, everybody! Nighty night!
diane - cj, i haven't read one yet...however, i ordered a bunch towards the end of the school year. they flew out of my classroom library!!!
Gail/1/NC - I hope it's as easy to read as it appears to be. I have tried so many colors and left it the whiteboard lasst year. This seems to be the answer.
CJ - Goodnight all... I need to get up at 5:00 - on my way to the Capital city to mark government exams..I know..(I am a single mom-doing it for the money...not because I believe grade three stduents should write government achievement tests.. Talk to you all
Michelle/3/or - I use the commercial Word Wall Words sold by Carson-Dellosa
TessaTL - There is so many great history books out there to read
judy3ca - Night, CJ
Kim/K-1/Ca - night CJ
Alta Rose - CJ and I discovered them on Sunday. I took a couple home to my son and he thinks they're very funny. (Time Warp Trio.)
Sadie T - Good night CJ.
diane - i had 17 boys and 4 girls this year
naneb - I looked at those sets but I don't always use the same words as in the book
TessaTL - bye CJ
diane - night cj
brad - Stinky Cheese Man (also by Szcieska) is probably my FAVE children's book
Alta Rose - Have a good time, CJ! I'll talk to you when you get back.
Jan - Goodnight, all...back to the closet!
Michelle/3/or - yeah....but his biggest thing is Geography. he can't get enough. He says he needs to know that stuff for when he's presidet
CJ - Thanks Diane and MIchelle - thought they looked good and Alta Rode bought a few. so I think they may be worth getting in the classroom.
Sadie T - Good night Jan!@
Kim/K-1/Ca - Why doesn't THAT surprise me, Brad?
brad - michelle, I liked "states" books when I was about his age
Alta Rose - Good night, Jan!
Alta Rose - Lol, Michelle!
brad - Big fan of Sciezka (although I can't spell his name)
Sadie T - Hi Karla
TessaTL - I'm falling asleep. Night all.
Kim/K-1/Ca - brb.....need to check outside temp
brad - Am I IN the business of surprising you, KIM??? (sneer)
Gail/1/NC - Good night everyone. See you all in 2 weeks. Will be in Philadelphia visiting family and will miss you all.
diane - night tessa!
judy3ca - I can't even SAY his name, let alone spell it!
Michelle/3/or - I always remember it rhymes with "fresca"
judy3ca - Michelle, how do you say the first syllable?
Karla - Hi all! Just thought I would pop in for a brief moment to see how everyone is doing. I have been gone on the past Fridays and missed the chat.
Michelle/3/or - I like to read Squids will be Squids when we're reading fables
Michelle/3/or - Shess
brad - I loved when they collaborated on "Diffendoofer Day" by Seuss
Karla - I was told that his name rhymes with Fresca
judy3ca - Michelle, me, too, on Squids. Is that a short /e/ Shess?
Kim/K-1/Ca - My favorite is the grasshopper story.................LOL.......I gave that book to my dad for Father's Day
Michelle/3/or - yes...like chess
brad - My fave is the "Ugly
Alta Rose - Am I imagining things, or is this the busiest this room has ever been? Seems like a lot of people are here tonight!
Kim/K-1/Ca - It FINALLY cooled off here. Nice breeze........relief!
judy3ca - Oh well, at least I know how to say Lobel and Sacher.
diane - okay guys, i have a ton of homework to do...only one more week of the writing project left
Michelle/3/or - when my son was in preschool, he always liked the one about Jack and the Beanstalk
Sadie T - You're right, Alta, there's a lot of people here!
brad - How lobel? Judy?
Glenda 1st TN - Your right it is really busy. I'm having a hard time keeping up. It is great isn't it!!
judy3ca - Night, Diane.
Kim/K-1/Ca - It is busy, Alta.......but it was busier earlier.........
Kim/K-1/Ca - Low Bell
judy3ca - Emphasis on second syllable, Brad.
Alta Rose - Yes!
diane - night all
brad - Okay, good, I've been saying it right
Michelle/3/or - I really missed a lot earlier...couldn't read fast enough!
Kim/K-1/Ca - have fun, diane..........
Alta Rose - Good night, Diane!
judy3ca - lowBELL
Michelle/3/or - and Sacker, Judy?
Michelle/3/or - for pronunciation?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Alta, I am sorry I didn't get an answer for you yet on the 90/10 thing........I will post when I know more.
judy3ca - Yup, Michelle, that's it. Sacher is pronounced sacker.
Michelle/3/or - we do 90/10 here
Kim/K-1/Ca - You do, Michelle? Tell us........
brad - 90 percent ho ho's, 10 percent twinkies
judy3ca - I am such a lunatic, I'm sitting her repeating Shessca.
Michelle/3/or - spanish/english and russian/english
Michelle/3/or - haha, brad
Alta Rose - That's OK, Kim. I wasn't sure if you meant schools that spoke primarily English or primarily French.
Michelle/3/or - I must have missed the question on the board...
Kim/K-1/Ca - I think in Quebec it would be French/English, right?
brad - by the way, nice job with darsh, everybody
Sadie T - Michelle, that's cool. Which is the 90 - English or the other language?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Cummins raves about it but tells little in his book...........annoying.
Michelle/3/or - what do you want to know about it?
Michelle/3/or - the other language, Sadie
Kim/K-1/Ca - HIGH FIVE! Yee ah!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Is it a dual literacy program? Two Way? Biliteracy.....right?
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, Someone needs to fill me in, and again thanks
Michelle/3/or - we started it 6 yrs ago...and achievement has improved DRAMATICALLY
Michelle/3/or - the goal is for the child to become literate in first lang. then transition to english
Alta Rose - Yes, but I wasn't sure if there would be any areas in which English were the primaryl language and the 10% would be French, or would it be the other way around. Don't worry-The heat is starting to get to me!
Michelle/3/or - starts off in Kinder with 90/10
Kim/K-1/Ca - All the research says that this is the way to go. Yet in California, GOD FORBID we should do what is the RIGHT and HUMANE thing for children.
Sadie T - Michelle, are there native English speakers in the 90/10 program too?
Michelle/3/or - every year, another 10% of the time is in English
Kim/K-1/Ca - .....or is the goal BILITERACY?
Michelle/3/or - no, there are not
brad - I hadn't been following this post, but now this sounds interesting. So they start out the 90 in native language?? Even in primary??
Michelle/3/or - Biliteracy is the goal, yes
Kim/K-1/Ca - So..........the goal is NOT biliteracy. It is English proficiency. Native English speakers are NOT part of the program. Sigh............
Sadie T - It's the same here - 90% Spanish in kindergarten. 50/50 by fifth grade
Michelle/3/or - our goal is for students who started school in our district to transition to English Literacy in 4th grade
Sadie T - But there are native English speakers in it here.
judy3ca - I love this program and wish you great success, Michelle. I wish I were still teaching this way. Good night, everyone!
Michelle/3/or - but, if they are not proficient in their native language by then, they get more time
brad - but do you think (and I know little about ESL) that if the children are in kinder or first, they should go ahead and be taught to read in English, since they can't read in native language anyway?
Kim/K-1/Ca - yes......that seems to be the way. But there are programs that have the goal of making ALL children in the school biliterate. Truly bilingual. THAT is amazing. And Wonderful.
Sadie T - Brad, the thing is that they can't SPEAK English
brad - KIM, I would love to have my children go to a school where they can become bilingual. This country is really quite arrogant when it comes to the need to learn other languages
Michelle/3/or - no...we want them to be literate in their native language first
Kim/K-1/Ca - What you want to do, Brad, is build their background knowledge in their native language.........it will help them to become literate in English.
Alta Rose - OK, so Kim--You are talking about children whose first language is not English?
Michelle/3/or - Kim, we are planning to go that route eventually
brad - Okay, thanks Sadie, but then you're teaching them to read primarily in native language?
Sadie T - Yes Brad, because it's harder to learn to read in a language you don't speak!
Michelle/3/or - yes, they first learn to read in native lang
brad - so you aren't teaching them English and native language simultaneously?
Sadie T - Later they will learn to read in English and it will be easier for them then.
Michelle/3/or - but...we find that most of them pick up English on the way, anyway...without formal instruction
Kim/K-1/Ca - Well, yes, Alta. There is a school population. Language minority and language majority children. BOTH are taught in both languages. Goal is biliteracy
Michelle/3/or - Formal instruction in English begins in 4th grade or later
naneb - I am going too, bye all see you in 2 weeks
Glenda 1st TN - It has been my experience if a first grader that doesn't speak English is taught to read or call words really they later do not learn to read in their native lang. Am I right?
Sadie T - You teach them to speak English from the beginning (that's the 10%), and to read in the native language. Then you add more and more English as they get older.
Sadie T - Bye, Naneb!
Michelle/3/or - yes...we teach them English, and they are exposed to print in English, but not formally instructed in it in primary grades
Karla - bye naneb!
brad - naneb, hold up the boat, i'll try and get there. LOL
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes Brad....you teach them content area in native language and language arts in both languages..........competencies transfer over to literacy in English and native language
Kim/K-1/Ca - 'night Naneb........i am going on vacation too
brad - haven't you already been on vacation, kim?
Alta Rose - OK--so we're talking about a completely different thing than what we have here. At our school, we have French immersion for children whose parents want them to learn a second language. They speak English at home, but learn to speak, read and write French at school from early age. In a few years, their reading / writing switches to English.
naneb - have fun Kim, Brad I'm not taking a boat and the plane leaves at noon!!
Alta Rose - Night naneb!
Kim/K-1/Ca - safe trip naneb.......
Kim/K-1/Ca - Glenda.......you only learn to read once. If you learn in your native language, the skill transfers to English.
brad - I sure hope she remembers not to do anything I wouldn't do
Michelle/3/or - Yes...and we have seen amazing things with our kids with this
Sadie T - Brad, like THAT says a lot!
Kim/K-1/Ca - That sounds about right, Alta.
Glenda 1st TN - I agree. The little girl that I had will probably never learn to read in her native lang. I find that very sad.
Sadie T - Glenda, students can learn to read in the native language IF they have instruction for it.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Well........she might be able to read if the alphabet is the same. But ......... her native language literacy skills will probably disintegrate. She will lose her L1.
Sadie T - It can also transfer from English to their native language, but, they still need instruction for it.
brad - How'd you get so smart in all this, Kim?
Glenda 1st TN - Sadie, That is just it. She probably won't get the instruction.
Kim/K-1/Ca - The underlying competency is what is so important. The building of schema...........
Alta Rose - Now, what about in our situation (French immersion) when they don't learn in their native language?
Michelle/3/or - yeah...I get kids in my class who's parents don't want them in the ELD program...and by third grade, their reading comprehension really suffers
Kim/K-1/Ca - Brad.....not by first choice. I am taking a class and have to read two books. It is so related to reading/literacy that I can understand it. I don't have the BEST grasp on it all yet.
Alta Rose - Maybe the letters / alphabet are similiar enough in both languages..
Alta Rose - Maybe the letters / alphabet are similiar enough in both languages..
Michelle/3/or - they think they are doing their kids a favor...they don't realize that it hurts them
Karla - Kim - What two books?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Well if they aren't learning in their native language then they can't keep up academically........the schema doesn't get all fluffed up.
Glenda 1st TN - Jessica was telling me yesterday that there are terms in literature that she has learned in her Sp. Lit classes and she knows there are english words for them, but she doesn't know them. She says it is the same for our students.
brad - speaking of classes, I had some stuff cancelled on me and I need to find some classes to take. Anyone recommend anything?? I've already tried basket-weaving. . .
Kim/K-1/Ca - James Cummins: Negotiating Identities and the other one is.............brb
Sadie T - Alta, in that situation, they get instruction in English later - so the skills they learn in French transfer over to English.
brad - so kim, you're saying to be 90/10, I'll need to put up 90% Japanese in your classsroom and then decrease by 10% every year?
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, Are you serious? Our local university has several classes on line.
Kim/K-1/Ca - The other one is "Schooling and Language Minority Students"
Sadie T - Exactly Glenda!! Actually it's the same for me about Spanish literature terms. It can be really frustrating! And that's how it is for our students, too.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes, brad........hee hee hee
brad - serious, glenda, do you like your local university?
Sadie T - No, wouldn't Brad have to be 90% English, and add more Japanese each year?
mompas - I´m an english learner. Do anyone can help me? How can I improve my speaking if i don´t have any one to talk with? I´m from Colombia South america
Michelle/3/or - that's right, Sadie
Alta Rose - brb
Sadie T - Hi Mompas, are you in Colombia?
Glenda 1st TN - It is okay. It has some outstanding programs that are recognized as tops in the country, I think. Mass. Com is the one that comes to mind. I know they are offering a course on technology in the education department that will be on line. A man at my church is in charge of it. Would you like for me to ask about it for you?
brad - technology, blah, but thanks
mompas - yes why?
Sadie T - Are you taking English classes there?
Glenda 1st TN - Oh well, I'll keep my ears open in case they offer something less "blah"
brad - LOL, thanks Glenda
mompas - I took, at centro colombo americano? And now i want to practice
brad - i'd like to take something on writing or reading comprehension, since that seems to be our focus this summer
brad - in this room and on this board anyway
Michelle/3/or - I heard there's a MOT course online..
brad - i wish katie wood ray gave workshops
mompas - Sadie, are you working?
Sadie T - Great idea Brad, then you can tell us what you learned.
brad - or go to jan's
Sadie T - Michelle, are you serious?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I would love to get into one of those writing workshop programs......but nothing comes this way
Glenda 1st TN - Too bad we can't get credit for the reading we have done on T.net.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Really, Michelle?
Michelle/3/or - yes
brad - i heard about the MOT course too, and I'm thinking about it, but someone said it wasn't that good. does anyone else know about it?
Alta Rose - Details, Michelle?
Michelle/3/or - someone posted about it on the mosaicteachers group
Glenda 1st TN - I haven't read this many prfessional books since grad school. My summer reading is usually mysterys and romance. It has been a wonderful breadk
Kim/K-1/Ca - Continuing education class? University class?
brad - If i wanted to write a paper, I'd have to submit the activity for approval ahead of time, but I may be able to include the reading and discussion we do on here
Michelle/3/or - I can't remember, I'll have to look into it.
brad - Either Kim. Obviously university class would satisfy requirements faster, but I'm not in the mood or place for that right now. I'd rather do a few good workshops. Like over the course of a week.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Same here, Glenda.....I quickly ran out of "light" reading and returned to my prof books.......
brad - Can I take your class online, KIM?
Karla - Catcha later! Have a good weekend and week.
Alta Rose - Well, the prof. reading really spreads, too. I am reading MOT and RWM, and my collegue is reading STW, and this fall we will decide which one to present to our staff for a book study. All because of what I've learned here!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Chapman doesn't offer it online, Brad.......I would LOVE it if you were there.
Glenda 1st TN - I hope it spreads like that at my school.
brad - I think I've decided RWM is my fave of those three, but I'll have to go with KIM, she definitely is teaching kids froom HIGHLY literate backgrounds (and MONEY too)
Alta Rose - Good night, Karla. I think I will sign off, too. I was washing windows all day in this heat and a nice cool bath is calling me.....
Sadie T - I've got to go too. Have a good weekend everybody!
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am supposed to do a book club thing at my new school...........
brad - I'd love to teach a class with you KIM, we'd have a ball. (And all our students would be like, "huh?")
Michelle/3/or - I'm going to a symposium at Portland State Univ. with Ellin Keene
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yep!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Oh Michelle.......sounds swell.
brad - ooh, Michelle, I'm jealous. None of the good people ever come around here, and I'm close to a few large cities.
Glenda 1st TN - Ellin Keene, where do I know that name from?
brad - Swell?? Who are you Kim, Peter Brady?
Kim/K-1/Ca - funny, glenda..................!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Neeto
brad - Pork chopsh and appleshaush
Kim/K-1/Ca - SWELL rhymes with MichELLE
brad - So you're not Peter Brady, you're Dr. Seuss?
Glenda 1st TN - No really, I don't have my books in front of me and I can't place it. Rememeber , I'm terrible with names.I
Michelle/3/or - I'm leading a book group at school this fall
Kim/K-1/Ca - Glenda......Ellin Oliver Keene is one of the authors of MOT
brad - Michelle, when do you find the time? LOL.
Michelle/3/or - I'm not completely happy though, because the teachers are being TOLD that they MUST do it
Kim/K-1/Ca - Michelle........how are you going to set it up? I have not done this before.
brad - What is the subject of your symposium, Michelle
Michelle/3/or - I ship my son to his dad's house..
Glenda 1st TN - Oh, that explains it. I still have the plastic on MOT. It is next on my list..
Michelle/3/or - I'm still working on that....I didn't get to pick which book, either. I wanted MOT, but the principal finally decided we should do STW
brad - Then it sounds like your principal should be the one leading it, if he/she gets to pick the book
Kim/K-1/Ca - See...I'm worried it is going to be a "whole school" thing too..........I always picture small group, choice.....
brad - how are you ever going to do whole school, unless your faculty isn't very large
Kim/K-1/Ca - Good work, guys!
Michelle/3/or - No kidding! There's going to be a lot of resentment to begin...so I want to start off somehow selling the idea of the importance of using the strategies
Kim/K-1/Ca - I mean gals and guy...
Michelle/3/or - oh...I'm one of 3-4 people doing the groups. we are splitting to smaller groups
Glenda 1st TN - I agree with your vision Kim. A small group reading and discussing something they are interested in will be contegious (sp?). Forcing everyone to read something they don't want to read will not be as much fun.
Michelle/3/or - I will have 2nd and 3rd grade teachers
brad - I just can't imagine valuable discussion with a gymnasium full of staff
Kim/K-1/Ca - Well, Michelle........I find "passion" works well for the sell.............
brad - That sounds a little better, Michelle. Are those teachers receptive?
Kim/K-1/Ca - that's my vision, brad......yuck.
Michelle/3/or - yeah...and it's worked so far...I've gotten several people to purchase MOT and STW on their own already
Michelle/3/or - Most...but I know of one 2nd gr teacher who will really test it
Kim/K-1/Ca - My principal wants to do the Ruby Payne book. But I found out last night that somebody is working on getting a workshop..........so maybe I am off the hook.
brad - You know, I just keep thinking. The teachers read these books or attend these workshops and say, "yeah, that's great," but then turn right back around, go into their classrooms, and do the same things they've always done. What provokes you to change?
Michelle/3/or - the thing is, I don't love STW like the other 2 books.
Kim/K-1/Ca - What I really want to do is Wondrous Words
Michelle/3/or - Our staff is being required to implement the strategies
Kim/K-1/Ca - Jan addressed this, Brad..........you have to have an implementation component.
brad - Michelle you're just going to have to ignore that one if she ends up being a hard sell. You can't please all of the people. . .
Michelle/3/or - STW is kind of dry and boring....compared to the others.
Glenda 1st TN - Has anyone heard of Parents, Please Don't Sit on Your Kids. it is a parent' guide to nonpunitive discipline by Clare Cherrt?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I hear ya, Michelle.............
brad - Wondrous Words would certainly not go over in my school. Talk about 90-10. Ninety percent of them have never HEARD of writer's workshop
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes...Glenda..but haven't read it. Good?
Michelle/3/or - I'm still waiting for WW to arrive...it's been 3 weeks already!
Michelle/3/or - Glenda, I've heard of it, but that's it.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Michelle........worth the wait! What a book!
brad - You do have to be careful when selecting a book. STW doesn't have a lot of "meat" for discussion. It's like discussing "Math Skills Pages for Third Grade" by Monday Morning or something
Michelle/3/or - At least I have What You Know by Heart to occupy me in the meanwhile
Kim/K-1/Ca - You should see the stack I am taking up to June Lake with me.....................heave ho, heave ho.......
brad - Michelle, if you read What You Know by Heart, you have much of the content of Wondrous Words already
Michelle/3/or - maybe I will read aloud from MOT in my group
Kim/K-1/Ca - good point, brad.
Glenda 1st TN - I don't know. I have it on my desk in front of me. That's how i knew the author. My principal wants me to read it. He is thinking about buying one for each parent. I think that is too extreme. If the book is good, I'm going to suggest he let us present it at a parent night workshop or open house with the PTO.
Kim/K-1/Ca - you can take some "big ideas" from MOT, Michelle............then take a few strategies from STW.............?
brad - Just like, I love the four blocks books, but none of them are discussion-type books to me.
Kim/K-1/Ca - There has to be a "buy in" Glenda................ on the part of the parents.
brad - MOT is discussion, RWM could be discussion, WW is discussion,
Kim/K-1/Ca - another good point, brad. you sure are pointy tonight
brad - If you did RWM or MOT next to STW, then you'd have discussion and maybe some motivation for implemenation
Michelle/3/or - I agree, Brad
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, any suggestions on the "buy in" on the part of the parents?
brad - Calkins could be discussion; Routman (especially Literacy at Crossroads) is discussion
Michelle/3/or - the principal only bought STW for the staff.
brad - harwayne could be good discussion too
Michelle/3/or - We actually did discussion of Conversations 2 yrs ago
Kim/K-1/Ca - hmm.... a knock out presentation that stems from the book might help.............do you know any real good public speakers?
brad - i also agree with what jan says. We should also be discussing the original research all this is based on.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Brad..I have that book on my nightstand. Should I read it?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Is Conversations good?
brad - which book, kim
Glenda 1st TN - Michelle, If the staff is reading STW and you are leading the discussion, could you not relate and stress the MOT aspects that STW touches on?
brad - Conversations is good, but it is more Calkins-like than MOT-like
Kim/K-1/Ca - Literacy at the Crossroads
brad - did you like Invitations?
Michelle/3/or - yes...I tune out a lot of new ideas that I'm presented with at Inservice if the presenter doesn't back it up with research....
brad - I've only done my cheap Barnes and Noble trick with Literacy at Crossroads.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Didn't read Invitations......I have her poetry books (K-1) and the one you mentioned earlier
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, a good speaker, or presentation. Now that has given me something to think about. Thanks.
Michelle/3/or - Yes, Glenda, that's what I'm thinking of doing
Michelle/3/or - oh..I have the Poetry for 3rd grade book
brad - All of Routmans stuff is good. Transitions is a little outdated though.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah, Glenda.......somebody to charge them all up about what is in the book.................make them want it.
brad - But for its time it was good too. LOL
Kim/K-1/Ca - If he buys it and gives it to all of them, thjey might feel coerced. They might feel insulted..............
brad - that thing Jan brought up is curious. In Crossroads, she speaks a lot about standing up for what's right, so I imagine she's very political. She's here in Ohio in one of the richest suburbs of Cleveland, so what she says, you have to keep that in mind
Michelle/3/or - I also want to refer to a bunch of stuff from RWM...
Kim/K-1/Ca - she did take CA to task though...........but what she said is TRUTH
brad - But that appeals to me. I'm big into "standing up"
brad - what'd she say kim? do you know more than jan's saying?
Glenda 1st TN - Kim, I agree. Knowing our parents, most will not even open the book. I was thinking the parents that were interested could sign up and then he could buy it if he wants. I favor presenting how to help them help their students at home with reading myself.
Kim/K-1/Ca - No Brad.............I have Literacy at the Crossroads. I haven't read all of it. But she goes off on the boneheads making curricular decisions in CA early on.............or was that MEM Fox?
brad - I just told a bunch of people at a week-long inservice to be prepared to "stand-up" soon. Teachers have taken it for too long, and it's time it stopped. WE are not the reason schools are in trouble.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Amen Brother!
brad - You know, I've only perused that Mem Fox. Is that Radical Reflections? I might have to pick that one up. I think I like ol' Mem
Kim/K-1/Ca - Michelle.......if you have primary teachers, tie into RWM
Kim/K-1/Ca - She is your cuppa Koala, Brad............
brad - I was just greeted with a bunch of stares. No offense to anyone in this room, but sometimes I wonder if it isn't because elementary teachers are mostly women
Kim/K-1/Ca - That is on my nightstand also
Michelle/3/or - She was the keynote speaker at a conference I went to...I really like her speaking style and sense of humor
brad - why do you say she's my cuppa?
Glenda 1st TN - No offense taken Brad.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Hmmmm..........I don't know Brad.
Kim/K-1/Ca - "cuppa" = cup of. Playing with words. You know.............?
brad - I'm serious. In private, everyone says all these things and tells me I'm right, but then why does no one say anything. Are they in fear of losing their job or something else?
brad - I know that, Kim, der
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes...........non confrontational, frightened.................
Kim/K-1/Ca - then why did you ask
Kim/K-1/Ca - doofus
brad - maybe because teachers are mostly conservative people (I don't mean Republican)
brad - why are you saying Fox is up my alley?
Glenda 1st TN - Not as much conservative as isolated.
Kim/K-1/Ca - She is opinionated, feisty, intelligent, creative, funny, and has bright red spiky hair.
brad - Kim, I guess I am kinda radical, huh? I'm thinking of a certain note to a certain someone in my building
brad - Hmmm, i'm only missing the red hair
Kim/K-1/Ca - And.........she has a website. A little dipping, Brad? Lots of good stuff. www.memfox.com
brad - OOH, thanks Kim. Dont' make me get political
brad - You might find me sitting at Cali's border with Regie
Kim/K-1/Ca - She just GOES OFF on Basals. Hee hee hee....
brad - That's the section I think I perused, Kim. I loved it.
brad - Admittedly though, Basals aren't as bad as they used to be.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Her Reading Magic book is quite good.
brad - kim, i can't imagine you're not outspoken
Kim/K-1/Ca - I almost required it for my Ed 500 students. I went with Cullinan instead
Michelle/3/or - no...good literature in them, but I just love the FEEL of a trade book
brad - Cullinan?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am outspoken in the right time and place. but i am not confrontational
brad - oh, i'm not confrontational either
Glenda 1st TN - Guys, Jessica just came home. She has informed me that we may not have much of a social life, but we sure can stay up late. I guess that is her motherly way of telling me it is time to go to bed. LOL Guess I'll be a good little Proud Mama and turn in. Good night all
Michelle/3/or - good night, Glenda
brad - AND I know how to back myself up. That's always important. Like Michelle said, she doesn't listen to anyone without the research
Kim/K-1/Ca - I really wanted the Jim Trelease book . But with 2 other texts Words Their Way, I thought it might be a bit much. So....."Read to Me" by cullinan is the next best thing. short like a chapter book
brad - nite glenda
brad - I've never heard you mention this book, Kim. Is it like Trelease?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes....Trelease in cliff notes.
brad - LOL, that probably made them happy
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am thinking abou tbuying a case of them for my parents next year.
brad - what's the other book?
Kim/K-1/Ca - B&N, 20% off...............
Kim/K-1/Ca - Classrooms That Work, LIteracy (Cooper), Words Their Way, and Read to Me: Raising Kids Who Love to Read
brad - Classrooms that Work is good
Michelle/3/or - The Cooper book is pretty good too
Michelle/3/or - I haven't read the others
brad - What is the Cooper book?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Lots of good basic information.....in both books. You have the Cooper book, Michelle?
Michelle/3/or - It's good for ed. students
Michelle/3/or - yes, I have that book Kim
brad - Why not the Pressley book, Kim? LOL
brad - Is this like a methods course, Kim?
Kim/K-1/Ca - It is called, Literacy: Helping Children Construct Meaning. A basic "bonehead" teaching - reading text.
Kim/K-1/Ca - yes, it is the methods class...........
Michelle/3/or - I have the 3rd edition
brad - our reading methods wasn't very good. How is yours designed, Kim?
Kim/K-1/Ca - i am using the 4th ed.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I keep the class moving a lot............ try to keep it interesting, hands-on..................relevant.
brad - Do you cover the different methods--F/P, 4B? Do you cover research?
Michelle/3/or - I think what made one of my reading classes so good was that the teacher modeled, constantly.
Kim/K-1/Ca - They have to do the reading.........midterm, final, all essay. response journal to the cullinan book..thematic unit, professional journal article reviews................
Kim/K-1/Ca - I tie EVERTHING to the research
Kim/K-1/Ca - I model, model, model, bring in lots of stuff..............read aloud to them
brad - I'm curious, why do you do response journal to Cullinan? Be honest.
Kim/K-1/Ca - They are not ready for the subtle differences .................... so I show them the Cunningham books, F&P, tell them to buy these....................you will need them sooner or later!
Kim/K-1/Ca - to have them practice journaling, really................that way I don't have to go into big detail about journals and can spend more time on Katie Ray stuff...............
Kim/K-1/Ca - The book is short enough that the assignment is not overwhelming
Kim/K-1/Ca - Most of them have NO IDEA how important the read aloud component is..so I want them to spend some quality time with that little book.
brad - Reason I ask: We had a TREMENDOUS amount of reading in university (like whole texts btw. classes) and after my first few quarters, all these prof's started requiring response journals. I knew it was to "make sure" we were doing the reading, and I resented it. I even wrote in one of my journals, "I hate doing these f--ing response journals. If you want to know if I read it just ask me in class."
Kim/K-1/Ca - Interestingly................they tend to respond as PARENTS more than prospective teachers.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I hear you Brad. So that is why I only have them do it with the short book.
Michelle/3/or - yeah...I had a semester like that too, Brad.
brad - Of course I'm outspoken and most of my classes were Socratic method, so there was no question I had done the reading, but you can't let one go by without doing an assignment, or they'll all want to. The prof whose journal I wrote that in wrote in the margin, "But you do them so well."
Kim/K-1/Ca - There is also a tutoring component............... 2 hours a week............LOL Brad!
Michelle/3/or - I had one interesting prof who told us to respond in any way we wanted....but the assignment was a crucial part of the grade, so I was too nervous to do anything really interesting
brad - I really enjoyed my university, but hated those dam response journals (sic)
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah.........I hated "cooperative groups."
brad - My university was nongraded, so no worries there. LOL
brad - you're not cooperative kim?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am............... but always hated the groups anyway.
brad - in my teacher's cert program, they were really into jigsaw. Hated that. Thought it was a substitute for poor prep on prof's part.
Kim/K-1/Ca - JIGSAW.....oh yeah. Yuck again.
Michelle/3/or - yes...I got so sick of the Jigsaw method
Michelle/3/or - in one class, that's all we did. Easy planning for the prof
Sadie T - Can't believe you guys are still here....
brad - did you go to school with me, michelle. LOL. when i say they were really into jigsaw, THEY were really into jigsaw. We kept writing on evaluations: "Not so much jigsaw!"
Michelle/3/or - and it was a Reading Methods class for my reading endorsement!
brad - sadie's back. We're talking about university
Kim/K-1/Ca - There was a book about that..........Tribes.
Sadie T - Cool. Don't get me started about that. Can't stay long...
brad - Tribes is a decent book. Much more than jigsaw, though. LOL
brad - Jigsaw is one of those things that sounds great in theory (even to me, now) but students end up resenting.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Brad was grilling me about my credential class. How I torture my students.
Michelle/3/or - I've heard of it, don't think I've read it. Sounds real familiar though
Michelle/3/or - did Kim pass the test, Brad?
brad - Alta Rose, back too?
Sadie T - Torturing your students must be fun, Kim.
Alta Rose - Hi, I'm back, much cooler now. What the heck is jigsaw???????
Kim/K-1/Ca - How was your bath, Alta?
Michelle/3/or - lucky Alta doesn't know!
brad - My goal is to do what Kim's doing, so that's the reason for the grill
Michelle/3/or - mine too, brad
Alta Rose - No, but I'm curious now!
Michelle/3/or - still working on my masters, though
Kim/K-1/Ca - No, Sadie.........they whine worse than first graders.
brad - Kim, you and I should hit the road: Dishtowels and Post-It's: A Reading Strategy Workshop
Michelle/3/or - I have a friend teaching at the local Univ, so I grill her a lot
Sadie T - Yeah... I remember that. I remember DOING that.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Take small groups. Each group learns something. But it is different from the other groups.
brad - LOL< I just had a Sensory Image connection. When you asked Alta Rose about her soak, I could swear I smelled bubble bath.
Kim/K-1/Ca - THEn, you mix and match new groups. Each child "teaches" the others what the first group learned.
Alta Rose - Nope, Brad, I actually just had a shower to cool off!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yes............and Feng Shui in the Classroom
Alta Rose - Kim, are you describing jigsaw?
brad - call me crazy, but I kinda believe that feng shui stuff
Sadie T - Kim, the only place I saw jigsaw was at the university.
brad - something about it intuitively appeals to me
Kim/K-1/Ca - yes.........did it sound right?
brad - dont' do jigsaw, alta. your students will hate you
Michelle/3/or - I think it makes a difference...some of it makes a lot of sense (Feng Shui)
Sadie T - I missed the beginning of this... do you teach your university students about it? Do you like it?
Alta Rose - Lol!
Michelle/3/or - You can do jigsaw once...like if they are in groups where they are learning about something of their choosing..
Sadie T - Brad, are you going to use Feng Shui when you re-do my classroom?
brad - once in a while it's probably fine, but ugh, all the time with that prof
Kim/K-1/Ca - No................my class is the Reading Methods class....jigsaw came up when we talked about what we hated about being in a university class
Michelle/3/or - but the "read this section of the chapter and be prepared to teach the others about it " method is horrible
brad - sure sadie
brad - amen, michelle
brad - there's something to be said for explicit instruction
Michelle/3/or - maybe we did go to school together, brad
Sadie T - LOL Kim. I don't know why but it seems more popular w/ university professors in teacher ed programs than anywhere else.
Kim/K-1/Ca - <<waving arms up in the air>>Amen Michelle
Michelle/3/or - yeah...what NOT to do
brad - We use to say, "I pay to come herre and be taught, not do the teaching."
Alta Rose - I remember one exercise in which for some reason we had to describe our partner as a car! Well, having absolutely no schema about cars (didn't have one, didn't even drive yet) I couldn't do it! Talk about feeling stupid!
Sadie T - Yes, Alta, been there, done that!
brad - what was the purpose behind that alta?
Kim/K-1/Ca - I told one prof he just wanted us to get into groups so he could go get a burrito
Michelle/3/or - lol kim
brad - LOL, Kim what'd he say?
Alta Rose - I can't remember. It was a class with just a small group of students. Maybe one of those "getting to know you" exercises.
Kim/K-1/Ca - he laughed and agreed with me...............then put us in groups anyway
brad - Please tell me you don't do "getting to know you's" Kim
brad - at least he was honest, I appreciate that
Kim/K-1/Ca - he said, "Kimberli you don't like groups because you have to do all the work."
brad - Amen, I always got, "Brad, you're creative, come up with something."
Kim/K-1/Ca - NO! I ask them to tell me about themselves as readers....how they feel about reading and if those feelings impact the way they might teach reading
Kim/K-1/Ca - And every term I get somebody who tells me they are dyslexic.................
Jacqueline - <---doesn't like group projects much...especially when paired with slackers!
brad - Kim, whatever happened to that one guy you were telling me about, you know, the hopeless one?
Kim/K-1/Ca - <<<nodding head in agreement with Jacqueline
Jacqueline - ALTHOUGH I did have one eye-opening experience in Credentialing program...a randomly assigned group of 4 of us had to come up with a presentation about Piaget...
Kim/K-1/Ca - Recently, Grad?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Recently, B R A D?
brad - I don't know, you said he made up excuses and he was asthmatic and had been in your class two or three times already
Jacqueline - I was focused on the content...reading Piaget...putting it into words...but the others thought an Oprah Winfrey-like talk show would be just the way to present our info...I thought it was silly...they overruled me...so
brad - see, that's what they always relied on me for, the Oprah thing
Jacqueline - we did it...with three guests...two humorous and one (me) the scholarly professor type who presented the "meat"...
Kim/K-1/Ca - <<<on the edge of our seats here
brad - "Let me entertain you. . ."
Alta Rose - LOL!
Sadie T - Brad, I'm sure you do a good Oprah.
Kim/K-1/Ca - he dropped, brad
brad - you expect to see him again?
Jacqueline - The class loved us ...and since peer evaluation was also a love of this teacher...they gave us the highest scores in everything... I realized the other students knew what type of audience we were up against better than I did...but then I learned a lot more about Piaget than they did ...
Kim/K-1/Ca - sure....next term
Jacqueline - so, I guess it was a win-win!
Sadie T - That's great, Jacqueline!
brad - One time, I did "Pop UP Video." And when I "popped" with sentence strips, the audience marked it off on their bingo cards. I rigged the game, so everyone said Bingo! at the same time when the presentation was done.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Ooohhh........very good, Brad!
Sadie T - When I was in the credential program we all worked together SO WELL, but we were pretty unusual. It would be like if this T-net group did a presentation together.![]()
brad - I don't know how much they learned but it was fun
Sadie T - Brad, that's so cool!
Jacqueline - Sadie...to be totally honest...I only relaxed (because two of the students were C students and didn't care about their grades) when the teacher told me she would grade each of us individually. *embarrassed*
brad - they mighta learned the vocabulary since it's what they were marking off. LOL
Jacqueline - nice Brad!
Michelle/3/or - I had pretty good experiences with cooperative groups when I was going through the program too
brad - again, we were nongraded, so the pressure's off.
Kim/K-1/Ca - yeah....groups weren't all bad...............I guess.
Alta Rose - brb
Jacqueline - That's good Michelle!
Sadie T - It depends so much on WHO is in the group. Sometimes you get stuck with all the work. In the cred. program we really all worked together, so it was great. But in other classes... I HATED it because a few would always end up doing all the work,or disagreeing with each other about everything...
Michelle/3/or - I'm IM'ing a friend of mine who just got MOT...she skimmed through it today
Kim/K-1/Ca - I finally saw the movie, "The Others" last night on Pay per view...............anybody see it?
brad - we had a "permanent" group for most things, and we had one true slacker (and a dimwit to boot) in our group. It was major problems, but we always came up with something so creative (and we covered her ass too) that the audience always liked us (and so did the faculty for a laugh)
Michelle/3/or - I'm so excited for her to read it!
brad - NO, KIM, don't ruin anything.
Michelle/3/or - I haven't seen it either
Kim/K-1/Ca - You must see it. Truly well-done.
brad - we all carpooled together too; the faculty arranged groups by geographic proximity
brad - we had a great time. You would've fit in perfectly Kim
brad - We were constantly cutting up
Kim/K-1/Ca - I know it, Brad.............. right up my alley
Sadie T - Us too, Brad, although it wasn't "arranged" that way. By the end of the year we were going EVERYWHERE together. Of course that was mostly because we had no lives whatsoever... but we had fun while we worked.
brad - Nobody on the board would probably want to sit next to me at inservices because I am constantly cutting up. (especially if I'm bored or it's late in the day)
brad - your cuppa, kim
Kim/K-1/Ca - hee hee hee.............I write notes to the person next to me............funny ones.
Michelle/3/or - I've gotten in trouble in staff meetings for laughing too much
brad - Sometimes, if I like the people giving them and thought they did a good job, I say, "I hope you didn't find me rude."
brad - KIM, big note writer, too. How could you not tell?
brad - I'd prob'ly be Jan's biggest nightmare
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yep.....that's mee
Sadie T - Brad, I think you already ARE Jan's biggest nightmare... LOL
brad - Kim, I probably couldn't sit next to you at a meeting. The two of us would be incorrigible
Sadie T - You would be, you'd probably even get ME in on it.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I think that is a confirmed fact, Brad. You ARE Jan's biggest nightmare.
Sadie T - It's been known to happen.
brad - Hey, Sadie, you're in this too. Judy lumped you in with me and Kim. Could you imagine the THREE of us at a workshop?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Oh man, especially one of those long and drawn out mandatory things we have all heard so many times before................
brad - Hey, Jan appreciates Inquiring minds.
Sadie T - I'm not sure you could still call it a "workshop" after the three of us were there.
brad - exactly kim, you can tell if I'm really into it, because I'll actually shut up for five minutes
brad - but if it's one of those things on stuff I already know. . . LOOK OUT
Alta Rose - Yeah, Kim, like at our school we have been working on a "3 year plan" for the past 6 years!
Alta Rose - Borring!
Kim/K-1/Ca - LOL Alta!
brad - Rofl, alta
Sadie T - LOL, Alta, they must think that if 3 years are good, 6 are better!
Alta Rose - The things we have to do for the government!
Kim/K-1/Ca - My computer chair is bugging me....itchy.
brad - if I have to hear about the state coming in and taking over one more time. . . . . . . .. I just wanna cry out, "So let them come in, ALREADY!!"
Sadie T - Do that, Brad, do that. Tell us what happens.
Kim/K-1/Ca - But OUR state is supposed to come in! No fair!
Alta Rose - They wouldn't know what to do if they came, Brad...
brad - lol, sadie, you'd love it, wouldn't you?
Michelle/3/or - that's the truth, Alta
Kim/K-1/Ca - Tape record THAT, Brad!
Sadie T - Yeah, Brad, if your school is REALLY bad... they might have to send CALIFORNIA in.
brad - They panic, cause when the state comes in, it's the administration that gets booted. I keep trying to tell my colleagues that (that admin degree does come in handy) So, see faculty's not the ones in danger. They're just passing on the panic.
Kim/K-1/Ca - ROTFLMAO Alta.................good one.
Kim/K-1/Ca - Gray Davis is coming! Gray Davis is coming!
Sadie T - Alta, that's true!! I can see it..."okay, we got rid of those people who couldn't run the school.... now what do we do???"
brad - maybe it's just my district, but teachers are too weak
Michelle/3/or - Our teachers are pretty vocal
Alta Rose - Lol, Sadie!
Kim/K-1/Ca - no BRad."incompetent."
brad - They came in over in Cleveland, and you don't see them making headlines yet, do ya? It's just an empty threat.
brad - LOL, KIm
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah, what do they do.....pull in STATE workers to runthe schools?
Sadie T - Brad, you mean California came over in Cleveland, or just Gray Davis, or what?...
brad - Good for your staff, Michelle. I wish ours would speak up. I'm thinking it's time to rise up. (is that the Rocky music playing?)
Kim/K-1/Ca - I can just see it. The DMV folks running your school office!
Sadie T - Kim, Kim, you're gonna give me nightmares... it's too close to my bedtime for this.
brad - LOL, I don't know WHO exactly came in to run things (state supt.) but I'm pretty sure they were Ohio people, Sadie
Michelle/3/or - lol Brad...but we have a pretty good administration. We don't have anything to "fear"...they actually listen to us
brad - Where are you in Oregon, Michelle?
Michelle/3/or - wow, and I thought the lines for the restrooms at school were long now...wait til DMV gets there!
Michelle/3/or - Woodburn
Michelle/3/or - it's between Portland and Salem
Kim/K-1/Ca - ................and the FORMS! OMG!
Sadie T - ROFLOL
brad - Everyone is "shocked" that I stand up for myself and what I know is right. "You're so brave for a first-year." Well, I'm not some fresh-faced 22 year old who can be intimidated, I respond
Kim/K-1/Ca - Can you just see it? "Yes, I need to check my daughter out of school for a dr. appt."
Hedgie - Hello I am from Canada
Sadie T - Hi, Hedgie
Kim/K-1/Ca - First step into this line. Then fill out this form in triplicate. when finished, stop at that line over there.
brad - And school pictures would be even more horrible than they already are. ROFL
Alta Rose - Hello, fellow Canadian!
Michelle/3/or - well...they'd let anyone take any kid out of school if it were the Oregon DMV
Alta Rose - You guys are killing me!
brad - of course, i may be out of a job in a few years for being outspoken. lol
Michelle/3/or - although...they'd still have to fill out the paperwork. no one would read it though
Kim/K-1/Ca - "Go wait outside in the second to the last set of parking stalls. Your daughter and a clipboard will be grought to you."
Kim/K-1/Ca - "...sometime next Tuesday."
brad - Hey everyone, Let's Jigsaw!!
Sadie T - LOL Kim. And I hate to think about the teachers... if you needed to make copies or something....
Alta Rose - Lol!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Can you imagine them keeping track of shot records? Emergency cards?
Michelle/3/or - you'd need a parent signature for that!
brad - Does anyone else get that in their state?
Michelle/3/or - for the copies, I mean
Michelle/3/or - get what?
brad - get the threat the state will come
Kim/K-1/Ca - Yeah, it dosn't seem so bad now, does it?
Michelle/3/or - ha! I had forgotten what we were talking about
Sadie T - Yes, Brad, they're always telling us Ohio is going to come in if we don't shape up. We're terrified.
Michelle/3/or - No. Our state doesn't want to come
Michelle/3/or - California is always a threat, though
brad - Sadie, you should be, we have some real rednecks down along that West Virginian border
Michelle/3/or - we have lots of Californian teachers
brad - but I KNOW you all get threatened with THE TEST, whatever your state test might be
Michelle/3/or - of course...third grade is the first big year
Kim/K-1/Ca - I'll bet Michelle...............everybody wants to move to Oregon.
Michelle/3/or - well....if they want to come for cooler weather...tell them to forget it.
Sadie T - Yes, Michelle, California will be moving into Oregon any day now. LOL
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am NEVER up this late. Yawn...............
brad - Oh, Kim, you know you're a party girl
brad - keep, keep it on till the break of dawn
Kim/K-1/Ca - Even my dawgs are conked out............in MY bed!
Michelle/3/or - It's still too hot to sleep.
Sadie T - Brad, it's TOMORROW where you are!
Kim/K-1/Ca - And the snake is asleep in her water bowl.
brad - LOL,
brad - And from the feel of things, tomorrow's gonna be another hot one
Alta Rose - Here, too!
Sadie T - Here, three!
Kim/K-1/Ca - My dad wants me to drive into L.a. tomorrow............but L.A. , heat, and smog?
Michelle/3/or - who was complaining about rain earlier? if it rained hear...I'd be out dancing in it. Right now!
brad - actually we must've had a cold front pass through, because yesterday and today was quite nice
Michelle/3/or - Here four!
Sadie T - Me too Michelle! Actually I love the rain!
Alta Rose - There'd be no complaints here! We need rain big-time!
Kim/K-1/Ca - Me too, Michelle! We need rain so badly
brad - and it's not DRY heat in muggy oh
Michelle/3/or - brad? how 'bout you?
brad - it rained a little here yesterday evening
Michelle/3/or - make it unanamous?
Alta Rose - This is our second spring / summer in a row with drought conditions.
brad - i'm not a big fan of summer. autumn's my fave
Michelle/3/or - we had a drought last year, but this winter we had more than enough rain to last us for the year
Kim/K-1/Ca - I am leaving on Wed for Sacramento and then onto the Sierras for my hike.............I will miss you next week. By this time next week my hike will be done.
Sadie T - We have a drought too. We got a flyer in the mail reminding us to turn the water off while we're brushing our teeth.... to conserve.
Michelle/3/or - I'm going to Vegas on the 29th, for a week
Alta Rose - Have a great time, Kim!
brad - I want you to think of me often and with good cheer as you hike the ho ho trail
Michelle/3/or - hopefully flying, but if the flights are too full, I'll have to drive
brad - i do that anyway, sadie
Kim/K-1/Ca - Fun, fun, Michelle......... talk about heat!
Sadie T - Yes, Kim, have a great time! Don't pack too many Ho-Ho's.
Michelle/3/or - I know! But at least it will be air conditioned everywhere
Sadie T - Yeah Brad, but imagine sending out flyers to everyone?
Kim/K-1/Ca - Thanks..............I will stop by the board often during the next few days. but I will miss you for the next two weeks
brad - when the hike is at its roughest, imagine me sitting next to you at inservice writing funny notes about dishtowels and the DMV
Sadie T - I may never see inservices in the same way, Brad.
Kim/K-1/Ca - I will, BRad......especially going over the lip of the canyon...............the worst part.
brad - (Secretly while Kim's on the hike, that's when I'm doing her classroom for "Trading")
Sadie T - Good plan, Brad. Can I join?
brad - (And then I'll replace her regular coffee with new Folger's crystals)
Kim/K-1/Ca - Good Night my friends.....(joke is on him................the classroom is locked up)
Alta Rose - Night Kim! See you in a couple of weeks!
Sadie T - We'll call your principal and get a key. Good night, Kim!
Kim/K-1/Ca -
Alta Rose - Well, it's time for me to turn in, too. Goodnight, everyone!
brad - goodnight all
Sadie T - I've got to go too. Good night everyone! (I'm going to have nightmares about the DMV taking over my classroom.)
