naneb - Hi!!!
judy3ca - ((((nan))))
judy3ca - So you survived your first week?
naneb - What a day!!! I am exhausted
naneb - I have 20 kids in one class!!
judy3ca - I read that--how crazy for you!
naneb - some total non-readers! I hope they fix it and open another class
judy3ca - I tried to work in my room all day but I didn't get nearly as much as I wanted done because I love to talk to people who stop by.
naneb - I am going to school tomorrow to try to write plans for that class
judy3ca - Wow, how hard is it to move forward with non-readers at that age?
naneb - that is the best part though, catching up with everyone
naneb - It is impossible in a class like this, these are not kids that will work independently
judy3ca - Yes, I love the visiting, but....
judy3ca - Will you get the class down to 12?
naneb - I think we have a solution figured out, the counselor will get all bent out of shape, she tends to take these things as a personal attack
judy3ca - Is the counselor the one who set up the classes?
naneb - another sped teacher is going to change her planning period and take some of the kids
naneb - it is her job to do the schedules and she always wants us to let her do it and it is always messed up
judy3ca - LOL, I hate doing schedules! I just like lesson plans.
naneb - we used to do them all and the counselor just put them in the computer, but this one wants to do it herself and we have to do damage control
judy3ca - Have you started any MOT strategy work?
naneb - I just want the kids to get what they are suppose to have, I don't mind teaching all of them just not at one time
naneb - we read the handbook today and that is all, I did read First Day Jitters and we talked about how nervous we were
judy3ca - Did the kids admit to being nervous?
Erin - Judy, looking through my presentation for tomorrow. Making notes of what I want to say
naneb - I told them we would not be doing workbooks and that was a big hit, we talked about how you have to practice to get better
judy3ca - Erin, LOL, I was just going to ask you about your presentation--you seem very calm!
naneb - Yes, I said that I hardly slept last night and this one boy said he didn't either and then they all admitted that they were pretty scared
Erin - Basically, it's just a curriculum unit for class. I've done so well on everything else I'm not too concerned. It's 70 pages about writing workshop and process using some of our favorites. I doubt he'll read the whole thing
naneb - Erin, where are you presenting?
judy3ca - My curriculum director called today and asked if I'd be one of the presenters for 6 Traits (which is new for us) and I said I'm okay with kids but don't do well with adults. This is the first time I've said no to her.
naneb - judy, I bet you would have done great
judy3ca - Erin, can we read it?
judy3ca - nan, oh right, and she doesn't take no for an answer, LOL, so I'm halfway in at the moment.
Erin - Just in my class. But Judy knows what I said the other presentations were like definitely not ESIA approved.
naneb - the more you do it the easier it gets, I presented last year for my faculty and I was scared to death but it was fun
judy3ca - Well, Erin, we know your presentation will be wonderful!
Michelle/3/or - hey everyone....I'm thinking a lot about writing tonight....still reading Wondrous Words
Erin - Judy, you would be a tougher audience to present to than my class LOL
Erin - Yeah, I love that book Michelle.
judy3ca - Michelle, I've been thinking about writing a lot today, too.
cavey - I'm reading it too Michelle
Michelle/3/or - it took two months to get it from Amazon. Wish i would have read it before What You Know by Hear.
Erin - The part that got me thinking was her whole concept of envisioning to help with revisioning.
judy3ca - I highly recommend the activity Ray calls 'choral reading' in Wondrous Words. It's fabulous. My friend who teaches 5th grade and I both got a lot of mileage from it.
cavey - Hey there's Miss Christmas in July!
diane - hi brad
Erin - Hi brad!!
judy3ca - Hi Diane!!!
Michelle/3/or - brad...I finally sent that stuff...
brad - I agonized over my color for ten minutes!!
diane - judy, i have to agree about that lesson! can't wait to do it with kids and not adults!
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah, so I notice that BRAD took the last good seat in the room..............sheesh
Erin - Does it match what you're wearing brad
cavey - nice choice Brad it's you!
Michelle/3/or - I spent a couple hours in my room today just staring at it.
judy3ca - LOL, Brad, that's why I come early--the colors!
brad - I thought the color of bad eighties eye shadow would do
ESL - hello everyone. What is the topic? Or, is there one?
Erin - Oh I better throw mine out then!!!
naneb - me too, Michelle, only my room had a big bunch of kids in it!!
brad - Judy, I seem to have your regular color, you've turned a tad darker
Kim/K1/Ca - I don't recognize myself in this color............
Erin - Yes our topic is writing and Wondrous Words
judy3ca - ESL, this is the Professional Reading meeting.
Michelle/3/or - funny, brad..I had eye liner that color in the 80's
ESL - What level? Writing workshop included?
Kim/K1/Ca - I have an altar in my house to Wondrous Words. There are cognates and candles.
judy3ca - Must be suntan, Brad--we're havin' a heat wave.
Michelle/3/or - No kids until the 26th here.
brad - Didn't we all, Michelle?
brad - I took a cognate for my cold once
diane - no kids until the 4th (5th?) here...
Erin - I don't have kids until Sept 3
brad - Michelle, that's our first day with students too
naneb - brad, I have 20 sixth grade sped students in one reading class!!!
Erin - I have cognate after dinner
judy3ca - 28th
ESL - Does anyone here use Reader's workhop in the middle grades?
brad - I"ve been know to brush with cognate too
naneb - I am going to try to this year ESL
cavey - Is he always like this on Friday nights?
Kim/K1/Ca - It seems there is no RAMP for my room. I asked my new principal if I could just stand outside and fling myself UP into the room. I don't think she got it.
judy3ca - cavey, YUP!
ESL - I have been thinking about what might be included in a rubric..I mean what would it look like?
diane - esl, a rubric for what content area?
naneb - rubric for waht?
Erin - ESL http://www.middleweb.com/ReadWrkshp/Juliindex.html
judy3ca - ESL, you might want to read Fountas & Pinnell then.
cavey - Kim are you in an Instructional Cottage?
Erin - site of teacher who used reading workshop in middle school it's great
Kim/K1/Ca - Sadie does, I think, ESL... she should be here shortly......I think
ESL - How are you wanting to conduct R. Workshop Naneb?
brad - erin, i really enjoyed reading her journal. thanx for link
ESL - Rubric for Reader's workshop
judy3ca - cavey, ROFLOL, is that a portable?
Kim/K1/Ca - <<snorting..... YEAH, Cavey, I like that......an "instructional cottage."
Erin - ESL there are a bunch of rubrics at that site
naneb - I am going to do it ala Debbie Miller in Reading With Meaning
naneb - how can you write a rubric for Reader's Workshop?
cavey - Yes that's how we make lemonade
Michelle/3/or - teachers at my school say they are "trailer trash"....they don't mince words
judy3ca - Kim, are you guys having a heat wave, too? It was 105 here today.
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah, it's a portable. With a crooked floor and no ramp. But that is being fixed, supposedly..........sigh.
Erin - Calkins has one in her book for silent reading. Were they on task, etc
Michelle/3/or - it's 90 here...bad enough
Kim/K1/Ca - yes, Judy.......back up into the 100s.
Erin - Judy, my air conditioner still going full blast
brad - we had a cold front come through two days ago and we've only been hitting low eighties for our high. It's been beautiful
cavey - I'm sure it will be lovely after the new kitchen goes in
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah Michelle.......I am going to dye my hair blond and get some spandex pants. Hee hee hee.........
ESL - For projects in reading workshop...
Kim/K1/Ca - Ah yes, Cavey. Curtains too, for the day core.
brad - (oh dear) What projects, ESL?
naneb - what kind of projects, dioramas?
Erin - LOL brad
naneb -
judy3ca - nan, ROFLMAO
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL Naneb........Yeah, dioramas and hanger mobiles.
brad - If it stays like that through Labor Day, I'd love it. Alas, it's already climbing tomorrow
Michelle/3/or - lol, kim. But at our school, at least the trailers have carpetting. We in the building don't.
cavey - Dont start with that you guys!
judy3ca - Cans to spare, cans to spare....
naneb - Oh no!!! Not the diorama, hanger mobiles!!
diane - esl, what kind of projects are you thinking of?
Erin - I went to the shoe store today and got a bunch of boxes....
brad - We have carpeting, believe it or not
Kim/K1/Ca - ........and the sugarcube missions.
naneb - How about a Canorama!!!
Kim/K1/Ca - Don't START, Erin............
diane - we've had lots of discussion on the board, of late, regarding authentic reading response...that's why the commentary
ESL - I have done R.Workshop at the 2nd grade level..I thought that maybe if i tried it in M.S. then there would be projects to go along also...maybe dioramas and such..
Erin - How about a can mobile? Sort of like a windchime...with all the characters peeking out
Michelle/3/or - erin! where is this going??
brad - Erin, honestly, I could use some shoeboxes. Did they give for free?
naneb - Too Late, Kim!!! I think it has started!!
cavey - Stop it!
Erin - Just joking brad.
Kim/K1/Ca - ESL... do you have Lucy Calkins? The ARt of Teaching Reading?
ESL - Most K marts will give shoeboxes for free
Michelle/3/or - I got rid of my desk today
Erin - ESL...we have discussed whether requiring responses such as dioramas were actually good practice and have decided that they are not
naneb - I am not doing dioramas but the hanger mobiles may be too good to pass up!!!
brad - I"m serious. Thank you ESL. I want some to house materials
Kim/K1/Ca - She has a couple of really good chapters about authentic book projects as response.
judy3ca - Michelle, good for you! I waffle about my desk daily.
Erin - Oh brad...on his best behavior
naneb - I do have lots of wire hangers!!!
diane - oh, michelle, congrats! i love not having my desk...freedom
brad - Maybe I could use Judy's cans. . .
Michelle/3/or - and used one of my stored bulliten board fabric pieces as a tablecloth. It looks great with the (forbidden) lamp on it!
ESL - Who does Kim?
Erin - I have a very tiny teacher's desk...just to put my papers from the office, etc.
brad - I waffle too, Judy. I need my desk for storage still
Kim/K1/Ca - Lucy Calkins, ESL. Also...... Debbie Miller discusses response in Reading With Meaning.
cavey - never used my desk with little guys - no time
ESL - HOw much do those books run?
Erin - And someone mentioned Fountas and Pinnell who talk about letters to the teacher about reading
diane - esl, lucy calkins...author of the art of teaching reading
ESL - I am teaching ESL students in the transition level..meaning they are not quite ready to leave ESL but too advance for ESL
Michelle/3/or - My desk was mainly to hold the computer and Band-Aids. I put all the comps together and moved the bandaids near the sink
Kim/K1/Ca - They are prof books, so...... they tend to be pricey. About $25-50. BUT they are the best investment. Good, solid practice.
diane - erin, i LOVED my reading response journal letters from the kids
brad - oh, cavey, I don't USE my desk. In fact, my students last year kept saying, "You never sit at your desk."
judy3ca - Me, too, Brad! And I tell myself that when class size goes back up, I can get rid of the desk then to make room for more kids. I emptied the top drawer and filled it with cool pens, stamps, stickers, etc. I'm going to let the student of the day sit there and they can use anything in that drawer during Writer's Workshop. How does that sound?
naneb - I was so busy today I didn't even drink my whole bottle of water, I usually drink one in the morning and one in the afternoon, I still had half a bottle left after school
Erin - Judy, I love that idea.
brad - me too nan!! LOL
cavey - Great idea Judy
naneb - I am going to do dialogue journals
judy3ca - cavey, I don't SIT at my desk either. It's for storage and subs.
ESL - I thought that Fountas and Pinnell was for elementary? No?
Erin - Hi jan and sadie!!!!
brad - what a nice "reward" judy
Michelle/3/or - diane....here's what i was going to ask you about....the letters. I loved mine too, but it didn't work for the lowest kids.
cavey - Hey Sadie
Sadie T - Jan, sometimes you scare me... are you following me?
Kim/K1/Ca - I have never actually sat AT or UPON my desk. Rumor is I have one in my new classroom. The one I can't get UP and INTO.
Sadie T - Hi everyone!
brad - Hey Jadie
Erin - They have a book for grades 3-6
Jan - Hello, all....Here's the frosted ragout
judy3ca - Hi Jan, Hi Sadie!! Hangin' out together?
Michelle/3/or - I think you mentioned the same, diane, and was wondering what you were going to change or expect from your very low kids this year.
ESL - which book is that Erin?
Kim/K1/Ca - You can use F&P principles in MS ESL
Erin - Kim , a trampoline in front of the door may work. P.E. minutes
diane - michelle...i did have the same problem
Erin - ESL the Fountas and Pinnell one
Kim/K1/Ca - ((((Jan and Sadie!! Smooches!)))
Jan - That Sadie follows me wherever I go
Sadie T - Kim, what's this about not being able to get up and into your desk?
brad - Yeah, Kim, what happened to all that (fake) training??
judy3ca - Wow, thanks for all the approval of the desk idea--maybe I'll get some better stuff, LOL.
ESL - YEah I know Erin..but what is the title?
Jan - I was standing on my desk once when the supt dropped by
diane - michelle, i don't know how i will handle that this year
Erin - Guiding Readers and Writers
cavey - hate it when that happens
Kim/K1/Ca - Well........ the custodial staff levelled the floor and then somethinghappened to the ramp. So I don't have a ramp and I can't get INTO the room. Really. ..... I offered to FLING myself up there, but to no avail.
diane - judy - did you do the f & p response journals last year?
judy3ca - Jan, that's a hoot--were the kids there?
Sadie T - Kim, can't you stack SHOEBOXES in front of the door to use as steps?
Michelle/3/or - It's the first problem-solving situation of the year for your kids, Kim...very authentic too!
Erin - I love when the sup't drops by during a transition time. You do all this great teaching, etc. and they come during "O.K. come back to your seats.
Sadie T - Jan what did the supt think about you standing on the desk?
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL, Jan. I have been standing on counters and tables when administrators dropped by........always interesting.
judy3ca - Diane, no response journals. My friend, the fifth grade teacher has enough trouble with them. I'm big into discussion, LOL.
cavey - Kim how about a coffee can pyramid
Jan - Oh, yes, everyone was there. I was trying to hang something on the wall.
Michelle/3/or - I will have 3-4 kids who read at DRA levels 6 and lower.
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, Sadie. And old Mission models, too.
brad - erin, ain't that the way. I whirl around and there's Admin X standing at the door watching my kids transition back to their seats
Kim/K1/Ca - BRB have to water my snake
judy3ca - Michelle, wow, that's low. I had a 12 last year and I thought that was LOW!
diane - me too, michelle...
Jan - The supt never forgot me, that's for sure.
brad - BRB, have to water self
judy3ca - My super came by today--I wonder if I get Brownie points for working unpaid?
Sadie T - Now THIS is bad: one time the principal came in btwn classes & sat down at a student's desk... I didn't notice her until I took roll.
Michelle/3/or - yeah...it was planned that way. The LD specialist wanted them all together this year.
Erin - LOL Sadie
judy3ca - Sadie, ROFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!
Erin - My assistant principal always comes during read aloud...I guess he enjoys the books
Kim/K1/Ca - So.... I have LOVED the board this week. You guys are awesome.
Jan - Sadie, just shows you're focused on increasing student achievement!
Michelle/3/or - no one stops by my room but maybe 3 times all year...I'm jealous
Erin - I'll come by Michelle...teacher observation is very important
diane - michelle, i had thought of having individual discussions with those students and dictating their responses into their journals...
judy3ca - I agree Kim--what a wonderful place and how terrific you all are!
naneb - I am falling asleep, I will talk to y'all onthe board
naneb - good night
Sadie T - I hate to think how I must've looked when I saw her... I have a hard time hiding that "oh-my-God" look sometimes.
Kim/K1/Ca - something i said or did, naneb?
brad - We HAVE had some good discussion this week, especially about staff development. Although some people think I am cracking the whip, expecting my second graders to have a repertoire when they arrive.
Sadie T - Bye Naneb...
judy3ca - Michelle, my principal doesn't even come 3 times unless I make him or it's an evaluation year.
Jan - Michelle, you have to do bizarre things. Try falling over the overhead cord a few times. Then admins come in
cavey - bye naneb
diane - would give them a chance to respond and keep a running log of their thinking
diane - would give them a chance to respond and keep a running log of their thinking
ESL - thanks for your input. I wish I could stay longer...
diane - oops
Kim/K1/Ca - We had a speaker in my ELD class this week............she was talking about staff development! Just what Jan said.
ESL - bye
diane - bye esl
Erin - bye ESL
Sadie T - Bye ESL!
Jan - We have had a great week on the board. My workshop for Wednesday, however, is in a state of chaos.
Kim/K1/Ca - This same speaker is trained by Ruby Payne. So... I might be off the hook for a Ruby Payne discussion, maybe not. I want to do Wondrous Words.
Michelle/3/or - oh, jan, I guess that's it. I'm too predictable. Principal did show up on Sept. 11th....I do remember that
Erin - Jan, can't you just print out all the great advice you give on the board. You do marvelous presentations all the time
brad - You are not off the hook with Ruby Payne for this board, Miss Kim
Jan - Unfortunately, my workshop is not on dioramas
Sadie T - Jan, is this that workshop you've been avoiding all summer?
diane - kim...i haven't started ruby payne yet...didn't feel like light camping reading...would love to discuss with you
cavey - Yeah Jan ever in the DC area?
Jan - Sadie, this is it. CFASST!
brad - Yes, Jan, what is this workshop you've been so studiously avoiding this week?? And why do you dread it so; isn't this "your bag."?
Sadie T - ESL are you still here?
diane - michelle, i'm curious, what do you think of notion for response journals?
Kim/K1/Ca - It is good stuff. I will gather my thoughts and share.... if you want.
Jan - Not often in DC. Wish I were. Love it there.
Michelle/3/or - Actually, I really like them
Kim/K1/Ca - Jan will you go to the CaReading Assoc mtg in Sac in Nov?
Michelle/3/or - I really had some good discussions with most of my students and got to know them more than i may have without the response journals.
Jan - It's training new teacher mentors in formative assessment of new teachers. BLAH!
brad - Poor Nan, she started this week, right? She's already tirred. Don't forget we're East Coast
diane - okay, need advice for questions to interview candidates
Michelle/3/or - It's just the lowest kids i worry about. The reading they can do doesn't lend itself to much response.
judy3ca - Diane, I should probably that I do have my kids respond with one paragraph to every GR book we read (35-45 per group last year).
Kim/K1/Ca - Good old formative assessment...............
solitaire - <----new teacher
brad - Ask what they think about dioramas, dianae
Sadie T - Hi Solitaire!
diane - ahhhh....michelle, i always let them respond to my read aloud
Jan - Kim, not Sac, but maybe Anaheim in Feb if we can find out about it
Sadie T - What do you teach?
cavey - Hi Solitaire
diane - lol brad
Kim/K1/Ca - refresh us diane, teacher candidates?
solitaire - Hi Sadie
Jan - Hi, Solitaire
Michelle/3/or - yeah, when you mentioned the oral responses, I thought of that...I will give that a try. Thanks, diane.
diane - sorry....too many ideas at once
solitaire - I teach art at MS although I certified for HS
Kim/K1/Ca - Michelle, yes......have them respond to your read aloud
solitaire - I teach 4 classes of jewelry
diane - we have had a very unexpected opening in first grade. we are trying to fill a position, but don't want to get stuck just because we're pressed for time
MrsJ/bcps - Diane, what grade do you teach?
brad - Mrs j, refresh my memory, how do we know you?? name's familiar
diane - mrsj, 3rd grade
brad - interesting, solitaire
Kim/K1/Ca - ask about what they consider a balanced literacy program..........
MrsJ/bcps - I've had a couple posts recently on yahoo groups mosaic list
Michelle/3/or - really diane? even with the budget the way it is, you have openings? My district is just beginning RIFing
brad - i don't even think they offered jewelry in my middle school
solitaire - Interesting is polite brad, thanks
Kim/K1/Ca - ask if they read research and/or prof books?
diane - well...our school has only one class per grade, so when someone departs, we pretty much have to refill
solitaire - I never had jewelry until college
Sadie T - Solitaire, they don't offer jewelry in MS's here either... are you at a large school?
brad - I was going to ask you about that, diane. You say you only have 5 teachers in the whole school?
solitaire - we have about 1400 students
Michelle/3/or - ah....we have over 600 kids in our school
diane - i've been thinking so much about formative assessment, thanks to you guys, that i know that will come up
MrsJ/bcps - Diane, I teach 3rd too and our school sounds very much like yours. We had an unexpected 2nd opening we just filled and I was helping to interview tonight for a teacher for the other half of my day
Erin - we have 900 students k-3
solitaire - It is a great medium, but I worry about safety. I've only ever taught older students
cin - What is the topic of conversation tonight?
brad - I agree with Kim, ask what kind of professional reading they do
diane - oh my!!! i can't imagine 1400 students
cin - Hello, Sadie.
MrsJ/bcps - We only have 6 teachers, one at each grade level k-5
cavey - diane - with only one first grade - so crucial!
brad - that's a big primary, erin
judy3ca - cin, professional reading
Michelle/3/or - wow! that's a lot of little kids, erin! (ok, I'm stating the obvious)
solitaire - 6th, 7th, 8th but only 8th can take jewelry
Erin - It's because our district can't figure out how to build a new school
Sadie T - Solitaire, you've taught high school and are new to middle school?
brad - are you in sadie's buiding, ms. j
diane - tell me about it, cavey, this is a blessing in disguise...our first grade was beyone weak...i should horrify you guys with a sample comprehension activity
Erin - They promise a new elementary next fall
cin - I teach at a K-6 school with 1400 students. That is typical of our district.
Erin - I have asked my principal if I can loop my kids if they stay next year
MrsJ/bcps - Don't think so! I'm in Battle Creek, Michigan
Kim/K1/Ca - Are you with Saugus Erin?
cavey - go ahead diane we've had dioramas 101
solitaire - yes, sadie and some college as well as adults in the corporate structure
Erin - No Castaic. Saugus knows how to build schools...usually
brad - saugus? castaic?? are we back to the greek myths
Sadie T - I used to work at a school with 3500 students...
Kim/K1/Ca - I sympathize, Erin...... you should see the Year round schedule in Palmdale.......AWFUL. Be grateful!
Erin - No it's our secret code brad so we can talk about you
diane - well...teacher was "teaching comprehension" with poetry for phonics book....had a poem about ketchup (was for short "e" sound i believe") and had the kids cutting out red construction paper and gluing to paper plate....to activate prior knowledge of ketchup and make meaning of the poem!!!
solitaire - that sounds like a couple of our high schools sadie
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad, Cas TAY ic has a man-made lake. When I was a teen we would go there and "lay out."
cin - It sounds as if most of you are from the same area...which would be?
judy3ca - Ouch, Diane--did she just not know better?
cavey - were there fries with that diane?
Erin - Oh my diane...that is worse than dioramas
Kim/K1/Ca - Don't TEASE us, diane!!!
solitaire - Texas here cin
judy3ca - cavey, ROFL
brad - ooh, cavey, you beat me to the punch. sst.
diane - she didn't "get it"...nice person, though
Erin - Southern California cin
Michelle/3/or - diane....I'm speechless...
Jan - Oh, diane---that's really authentic!
diane - principal was in a fit...
Kim/K1/Ca - cin... Erin and I are about 60 miles apart.
Erin - I would have had the students taste ketchup to activate their schema
Sadie T - Couldn't they use REAL ketchup? LOL
cavey - cin I'm from Va
Erin - Maybe brought in hot dogs and hamburgers too
Michelle/3/or - hmm....I'd love to work in Hillsboro...
cin - Thanks Erin and Kim. I am in Phoenix.....coolest spot in the nation this time of year. LOL
Sadie T - cin I am in California too
brad - I would've had them MAKE ketchup. It should kill my morning, unless the kids can't turn the press, then it might take all day.
cin - Thank you, cavey.
MrsJ/bcps - compare/contrast all the different colors of ketchup now?
Erin - We're baking here too cin...over 100 today
Kim/K1/Ca - I have a paper plate thingy.....but it is a poem. Phonemic awareness, etc. "Dinner's cooking, don't be late. Mashed potatoes, on the plate." Then they glue down cottom balls and little yellow squares. WE do a whole meal.
cin - Thank you , Sadie.
Erin - First brad, they would have to grow the tomatoes because then it would be an integrated theme unti
Erin - unit
diane - now, michelle, it wasn't typical...lol...besides i'm teaching at the base of the coast range....BEAUTIFUL
diane - cin, i'm in oregon outside of portland
Sadie T - Kim, I love the cotton mashed potatoes! My students do poems on plates too (food poems) I'll have to remember the cotton next time.
brad - way to bring in my science, erin
judy3ca - Mrs J, what is bcps?
Kim/K1/Ca - You say ketchup, I say catsup................ let's call the whole thing off.
cin - What professional reading have you addressed so far this evening?
Michelle/3/or - no, serious...I'd love to teach there....I told you, my aunt and uncle teach there.
diane - oh...i just got it...you could transfer...hmmmmmm?????
brad - I'm just thinking, "middle school?" and "four classes?" Something is rotten in Denmark
MrsJ/bcps - Battle Creek Public Schools, my school district
judy3ca - Wondrous Words, Fountas and Pinnell....
cin - Diane....be a little warm there too, hasn't it?
Kim/K1/Ca - "Dinner's cooking, don't be late! Watermelon on the plate!" Then they cut half circles of green and red, little black seeds.
Sadie T - What do you mean Brad?
Michelle/3/or - too bad it would be less than 30 days' notice...maybe next year.
solitaire - I also have two classes of advanced studio art brad
diane - cin, it's getting back into the 90's
cin - OK....have the Wonderous Words selection, but have not made my way through it yet.
cavey - okay you three have to work out the purple color issue
diane - oh hey, family has moved back into their collective homes
Kim/K1/Ca - Great, diane! How are they doing, emotionally?
brad - LOL, Cavey, good to hear
Erin - cin...great book. Did I miss what grade you teach?
Sadie T - I'm gonna change colors... um... what color's not taken yet??
Jan - diane, that's wonderful!
Erin - black is good sadie
brad - Good to hear, Diane
Michelle/3/or - I'm still slowly making my way through Wondrous Words too, almost done with ch. 2. But I'm thinking a lot
cin - Have opted for other reading than Fountas and Pinnell.
Erin - Yeah!! for diane's family
cin - Diane....were you evacuated because of fires?
diane - kim, they sound exhausted and kids are confused...the danger's not over yet, but they couldn't take it anymore
solitaire - thanks sadie
Sadie T - what a boring color....
Kim/K1/Ca - Do you like WW, Mrs. J?
Michelle/3/or - I used to do purple, but then it became too popular, so I chose whatevercolorthisis...and look what happens!
Erin - No it really stands out sadie
cavey - no Sadie very chic
diane - sadie, it's very slimming
Jan - Sadie, couldn't you have chosen a more exciting color?
Kim/K1/Ca - tres chic, Sadie.........dahling.
Erin - Better than that eyeliner blue someone else has
brad - ROFLOLOLOLOLOL
judy3ca - I believe in white towels.
cavey - bye solitaire come back
Jan - You sure stand out, Sadie, that's for sure.
MrsJ/bcps - Haven't read it yet, Kim (My name's Kim too, but I thought Kim in MI would be confusing here!) I am consumed with trying to get a handle on MOT, STW, and RWM before school starts
brad - LMAOPMP
Kim/K1/Ca - Jan...have you been to a Ruby Payne workshop? Or read the book?
cin - Sadie....as the would say in the chatroom #1.... your 'nekkid' without any color. LOL
diane - cin, no, my in-laws were
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh! So YOU are Kim in MI!!!
Michelle/3/or - sadie's words speak for themselves, she doesn't need external color
cin - Kim.....have read Ruby Payne.
solitaire - oh what a difference a color makes!
brad - I knew you sounded familiar, mrs. j. You're Kim in MI
Sadie T - lol Michelle
Kim/K1/Ca - ....24 little hours...........
cin - Diane.....had friends who had to evacuate because of the AZ wildfires in June.
Jan - No, Kim, no Ruby Payne at all.
MrsJ/bcps - Guilty as charged, Kim!
Kim/K1/Ca - It is interesting stuff, huh, cin?
Kim/K1/Ca - Do you remember when I told you guys the "refrigerator story?" That came from Ruby Payne's book.
cin - Kim, yes....makes a lot of sense, espcially since I teach ELL 3rd.
MrsJ/bcps - Yes, I am the lurker, who is ever so timidly beginning to post for all to see!
cavey - anybody else going to change colors or names? I have a hard enough time keeping up
Michelle/3/or - I have to tell you...I recommended RWM to my friends, and I found one of them in her room yesterday surrounded by books, with tablecoths on and studying RWM as she went...
solitaire - cavey, what do you teach?
Erin - I have two other teachers reading Wondrous Words..I'm excited
brad - Well, Michelle, if they were dishtowels THEN I would start to worry
diane - hooray, michelle!
cin - What impressed me more than anything was the concept of 'hidden' rules in the different 'cultures'.
cavey - Solitaire Gifted resource elem.
solitaire - That sounds interesting cavey
judy3ca - Michelle--that is cool! I have no lamps, but I did just buy 2 tablecloths! A friend stopped by today and said, "I didn't know you liked cute!"
diane - cavey, is your gifted program a pull-out, then?
brad - Cin and Kim, you just have to give a report to the board
MrsJ/bcps - Didn't actually change my name--my e-mail is mrsjbcps, but I sign my posts on yahoo group as kim in MI
Erin - Has anyone done that black checkerboard print that Miller has? It looks great in her room
cavey - not any more really diane I will have them for there identified subject LA
Michelle/3/or - Judy, I feel the same....I never realized the difference even my one tablecloth would make! Just with that my room looks so much warmer.
Kim/K1/Ca - yes, cin.......the different attitudes toward people, money, time, relationships..........
Michelle/3/or - I'm nervous to do that, erin.
cavey - that would be "their"
judy3ca - Michelle, LOL, actually she didn't mean it as a compliment--but one of the first grade teachers loved it.
brad - What checkerboard?
Erin - Michelle that's what I was thinking but I have a great "cubbyhole/bookcase" it would look great on.
cin - It has been very pleasant speaking with you. To those of you who have already started school, I wish you a most successful year, and the same to those who have not started as of yet.
cin - brad.....give a report to the board?
Erin - brad..she has it on her bookcases in the room
Kim/K1/Ca - Do we have to stand up in front of all of you?
solitaire - I'm kind of interested in doing a celtic art unit as part of my global citizen approach
brad - the board at ESIA
diane - thanks, cin, you too
Michelle/3/or - I'm cautious about painting and such, as my principal likes to "rearrange" the building every so often.
solitaire - thanks cin
Sadie T - You too, Cin!
judy3ca - Erin, I'd never get it on straight and I'd have black and white---um, brain dead here, what do you call diamond shapes?
cin - brad....first week of school. I am a little slow on the downtake. LOL ESLA?
Sadie T - Judy, they're called "diamond shapes"
Erin - Judy...rhombus I think
judy3ca - Sadie, ROFLOL!
brad - That Sadie, she's a keeper
Michelle/3/or - I was considering getting one of those rollers for stenciling around the edges of bookcases and such.
diane - so, i think that i am the only one jumping into a fairly regular routine and schedule from the beginning of the year (at my school, i mean)...how long do you all wait until you "begin"?
solitaire - cute Xadie
Kim/K1/Ca - rhombuses. rhombi?
brad - LOL, rhombus
solitaire - Sadie...good thing I don't teach keyboard
cavey - diane first day!
Erin - What is so funny about that brad?
judy3ca - Diane, I "begin" on Day 1.
Michelle/3/or - rhombi
brad - What does that mean, "begin?"
Erin - diane...I start a regular routine pretty quick...day 1
diane - thank you...
Erin - begin means to start, to commence, opposite of to end
Kim/K1/Ca - (soft piano music)...."Where do I begin..........?"
Erin - bye solitaire
cavey - cin are you gone or just changing colors?
diane - brad, i meant no cutesy activities, not too many "icebreakers"...real teaching
Erin - "Let's start at the very beginning, it's a very good place to start..."
judy3ca - Arrgh, I hate icebreakers!
Kim/K1/Ca - When you read, you begin with A B C........when you sing you begin with DO Rey MI..............
Michelle/3/or - I'm still thinking, diane...I start at the beginning...but start with routines. I guess that's the best way to put it.
Erin - diane...I agree. Plus I feel like those make the day feel like it goes on forever
brad - Somehow I knew with this room, I'd get some smartass response. No, I don't plan on too many cutesies, but not academically very heavy
cavey - Somebody pass the tylenol
Erin - Brad...who used to start with dioramas, now has to replan his first day. How sad.
Michelle/3/or - I hate icebreakers too! the kids who don't already know each other don't need to be singled out...so what's the point.
diane - yes, michelle, i do as well...i just model the procedures in their contexts
MrsJ/bcps - Hey, since I have so many of the mosaic board members here, can anyone tell me how to post a reply while I am reading my e-mails. They keep getting sent back saying the board doesn't accept html. What am I doing wrong?
judy3ca - I just show 'em where everything is and we get going. I think Jan once told me that it's okay to teach the procedures as we learn, so that's how I do it.
Kim/K1/Ca - I think you have to have default settings on your outgoing eMail, Kim.
cavey - speaking of Jan?
brad - LOL, I had a few icebreakers planned the first couple days last year, but then found out my students had been passed up "as a class" LOL, I was scrambling to fill that time
Kim/K1/Ca - Jan is scrubbing something.
MrsJ/bcps - ok, I'm computer stupid, Kim. What does that mean?
Erin - Jan? Where are you....
Kim/K1/Ca - Do you use OUtlook Express?
Jan - Jan is checking her transparencies...
diane - brad...that happens to me too...something about one class per grade ruins "icebreakers"
MrsJ/bcps - No, hotmail
Erin - Jan is looking up research on icebreakers
judy3ca - Brad, what does that mean?
Michelle/3/or - I found another plaid phonics book in my collection today....any takers?
Jan - It's called multi-tasking
Kim/K1/Ca - You know how you can "set" your outgoing eMail to use a particular font or color? Mine is blue, for example. YOu have to fix it so that your responses are in the default, ARIAL 10pt or something.
diane - jan passed out at the thought of the ketchup activity
MrsJ/bcps - plaid phonics?
Erin - LOL diane
Jan - I detest ice breakers!
brad - What does what mean Judy
Michelle/3/or - phonics workbooks that have plaid covers. as interesting outside as they are in!
MrsJ/bcps - Oh! I might actually be able to do that! Thanks, Kim
diane - somehow, jan, i'm not surprised! lol
Jan - That ketchup thing was pretty bad, diane
judy3ca - passed up "as a class" Brad--I don't get it.
Kim/K1/Ca - I dont' do icebreakers. With my credential students I ask them to tell me about themselves as readers. Is that an icebreaker?
brad - My whole class had the same teacher the year before. There was no re-sorting into new classes
Kim/K1/Ca - That's all I know, Kim. I have yet to make sense out of that mailring, anyway.
judy3ca - No, Kim, that's a discussion.
Michelle/3/or - a little bit, kim. but i think it's an authentic one.
Jan - An AUTHENTIC icebreaker, Kim. ESIA APPROVED!
brad - I don't despise icebreakers. I think they have purpose. Just don't need to do a lot
Erin - NO wet blankets, Kim
cavey - Oh Canada! Hi!
judy3ca - Hi Alta Rose
Erin - Hi Alta Rose
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi everyone!
Sadie T - Hi Alta Rose
diane - hi alta rose
Jan - Brad, what purpose?
Kim/K1/Ca - THANK YOU, Jan! Whew.......I ask them how they view themselves as readers and how THAT might affect their teaching of reading............
Jan - Hi, Alta Rose
brad - Well, I see icebreakers as an opportunity to get to know a little about someone to find you have common ground
Kim/K1/Ca - It's always interesting because at least ONE will insist she/he is dyslexic.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oops. Sadie, I see I took your colour. Hold on, I'll switch!
Jan - Kim, I think that's excellent. They probably have never even thought of the connection.
Kim/K1/Ca - ((((ALTA ROSE!)))
cavey - Not purple!
brad - I like to do what few icebreakers I do as an attempt to quickly find commonalities
judy3ca - Good night all--Sadie, you may have 'medium blue' if you like.
diane - brad, i agree...i hate them with adults, but think they can put kids at ease
Jan - Now EVERYONE is black!
Orion2b - what's the purpose of thie meeting room if there is onebeyond simply being for teachers and educators?
Sadie T - Alta, why don't you choose white, no one else is using it.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oops. Too late, Sadie!
diane - as long as they don't occupy too much time (and by that i mean more than 10 minutes)
brad - agreed diane
Sadie T - Alta, that was a joke...
brad - why does everyone hate ice breakers?
Kim/K1/Ca - I don't HATE icebreakers......... I just don't like to waste precious time.
Michelle/3/or - I haven't found any serious Ice to Break
brad - fair
Erin - I hate them because either I already know everyone...or I'm never going to see them again
Erin - Meaning as an adult of course
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I knew that, Sadie!
Jan - Brad, I think they are silly. Kids don't generally need them and adults don't want them.
brad - fair enough
Orion2b - if they pretend to force trsut then they are ridiculous
brad - explain orion
Orion2b - trust develops gradually and cant really be forced in the classroom
Alta Rose / 1-2 - They bring us adults out of our comfort zone!
MrsJ - Ok, my computer booted me off for some reason, then the meeting roomwouldn't let me have my name back. It says it's in use, so now I'm just Mrs. J. Sorry
Sadie T - It is awkward to be "forced" to "meet" people... usually by asking strange questions of people we don't know
Orion2b - but i like them to hel people get to know each other
brad - Oh, I agree, I just can't imagine an icebreaker that forges trust??
Kim/K1/Ca - Do you want a quick run down on Ruby Payne?
Orion2b - if your honest about what your expectations are then i think its fine
Jan - I hate spend an hour bonding with someone I will never see again!
brad - Kim's trying to get us to leave icebreakers
MrsJ - I have always hated those forced mingle with other people activities. I especially hate doing it at professional development.
cavey - Oh yes Kim it's a bit cold in here!
Sadie T - Kim why are you running down Ruby Payne?
brad - An hour on icebreakers??
Michelle/3/or - Kim, sure! I've never heard of Ruby Payne before it was on the board.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Also, if you are at a workshop, you likely won't see a lot of these people again, so why do we need to "get-to-know" them?
Orion2b - if the cie breaker is about practical information that is useful and opens up a topic of interest
MrsJ - Never heard of Ruby Payne.
cavey - Kim- you were saying
Orion2b - break ice for 15 max
Michelle/3/or - are you doing WW or RP, kim? for your group?
Jan - But people don't come to a workshop to break ice
Orion2b - is Ruby a pain? What?
Kim/K1/Ca - Sorry..........hubby needed to see an eMail. I got rid of him.
Erin - I agree Jan. Most teachers have no problem meeting people if they want
Michelle/3/or - hehe, Jan, I'd love to break ice right now...but wouldn't pay good money for it.
Kim/K1/Ca - Okay...you know the difference between situational and generational poverty?
brad - Our district is into appointment clocks now, which I think is an authentic icebreaker like Kim's discussion
Erin - Way to show him who's boss Kim
cavey - Diane got frosted by the ice breaker discussion
MrsJ - appointment clocks, brad?
Erin - What's an appointment clock?
Orion2b - workshops have so many purposes. No process works for them all
Michelle/3/or - the poverty thing...yes, kim
Kim/K1/Ca - In situational poverty, the crisis is usually temporary and the people retain middle class values. In generational poverty, it is a different set of values and mindset.
Michelle/3/or - jan, you can stay...we are moving on...
cavey - I'm with you Kim
MrsJ - Kim, Payne talks about poverty?
Kim/K1/Ca - So when you have children in your classroom living in generational poverty, you have ............"issues."
Orion2b - who is defining the povert?
brad - A clock model with a blank at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 spots. At first you just walk around collecting names to fill in your appointments. At a designated time in a workshop, you are given a question to discuss "How do you teach phonemic awareness" and then told to meet with your 6 o'clock appt.
Erin - OK Kim...waht are the implications for the classroom?
cavey - Jim now the same color
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I remember doing something like that before, brad.
Jan - Oh, yes, I've done that Brad
Kim/K1/Ca - The poverty is very relative, Orion, Good question. When you are in it and the people around you are in it...........you don't realize it.
diane - hi glenda
Glenda 1st TN - Hi everyone.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi Glenda!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That sounds a bit more practical.
Jan - Glenda! Welcome back
Orion2b - one person situtation is another's generation
Kim/K1/Ca - Hi Glenda!
MrsJ - Oh! I just went to a cognitive coaching workshop and we did something similar, but we had four seasons and we had to get a name for each and then we went to a different season for different activities/discussion/practice
Glenda 1st TN - Thanks Jan,
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, yes...........but situational is usually temporary. There is no "poverty mindset."
diane - kim, if parents and students are of generational poverty and teacher is living a different lifestyle...trouble relating to one another i'm guessing
cavey - Hi Glenda
Sadie T - Kim, a joke from the Great Depression goes like this: the people had very little, but no one had more than anyone else, so they didn't feel "poor". A guy there sold sandwiches...
Jan - Mrs. J, who taught the cog coaching?
Kim/K1/Ca - Absolutely, diane. Teachers tend to be middle class.
Sadie T - He put LOTS of meat and tomatoes and stuff into his sandwiches and made a lot of money...
brad - keep it moving, kim
Glenda 1st TN - I read the posts on the chatboard before I came to the room. Thanks for the advice.
Orion2b - can I buy one of those sandwhiches
Sadie T - ...then someone from out of town came through and said...
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, What is Kim suppose to be moving?
MrsJ - Jan, Carolee Hayes from the Center for Cognitive Coaching
Kim/K1/Ca - So the values differ. Money , for example. MOney when you are in poverty is for spending. Right now. If you have it you spend it......there is no "future" it is all instant gratification. With middle class, folks tend to plan for the future. Money is valued differently.
Michelle/3/or - you know, i was poor-working class growing up but didn't realize it until i was in college and they told me I was "at-risk"!
Sadie T - ..."You can't put so much meat on your sandwiches! You'll go broke! Don't you know there's a depession going on??"....
Jan - Just curious, Mrs. J. I have worked with Marilyn Tabor who does a lot of cog coaching
Sadie T - ...and so the guy started putting less on the sandwiches, people stopped buying them, and you know what? It turned out the stranger was right: there WAS a depression going on!
Kim/K1/Ca - Sometimes when you have kids in your room that you KNOW are in poverty, you get frustrated when they come to school without a jacket and no snack........yet talk about going to Disneyland or having a Nintendo.
diane - yes, kim, i see this with my in-laws...completely different mindset when money is concerned...and education as well
Orion2b - i thought i was middle class and we seldom planned for the future it seemed
Michelle/3/or - ah....see, my family is of the Spending mentality.
Orion2b - it was moslty to pay the bills
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, would you give me an example of the type of study that requires the teachers to need the group as you mentioned in your post?
Kim/K1/Ca - Education is not trusted......."don't get above your raisin'"........
brad - But, Kim, being of an "instant gratification" state of mind, most of my students "light up" if I talk about nintendo, because they DO have them. LOL??
Sadie T - Kim, that is true.
Orion2b - To Kill a Mocking bird speak to eduction and poverty so well
Erin - That explains a few students I've had Kim
brad - How does the book come around to education KIM?
Cynthia - hello, i was trying to figure out the chat topic, before loggin in, but couldn't tell....
Michelle/3/or - you know, kim, that doesn't happen in my school. They kids' parents consistantly say they don't want their kids working in the fields like they do.
Kim/K1/Ca - Family dynamics are different also. Tend to be matriarchal and very convoluted.
Sadie T - My school has canned food drives - the class that collects the most gets a party. Very frustrating for me because I know that some of my students are RECIEVING the cans, but of course, they also want to win the contest.
Cynthia - hi everyone
Erin - Cynthia, that's understandable
brad - That's because Sadie went on and on about sandwiches, making us hungry, Cynthia
Jan - Glenda - well, it needs to be a difficult enough innovaion that people can't do it alone. Models of teaching was one---darn hard. We needed each other. Writing could be another.
Orion2b - ah the digital mind as the challenge of defining wealth
Kim/K1/Ca - Probably because they are starting to embrace middle class values, Michelle.
Sadie T - Michelle, a lot of families here are like that too - if they are poor they want something better for their children.
diane - michelle, i'm wondering if your families have other cultural influences beyond that of the culture of poverty
Cynthia - lol,brad... yeah, i was following that story, too. got hungry.. but tookout some of the filling! lol.. (not really)
Michelle/3/or - so....even though my kids' parents came to the US due to poverty...they are more of the "situational poverty" type? I've never thought of that before.
Erin - Many times the workers in the field are here to get out of poverty.
Jan - Glenda, it should be learning a new strategy where people have to implement it in their classrooms. They will need to work together to implement.
cavey - It's okay Cynthia I've been here all along and I don'
Sadie T - But, even if the parents want something better for the children, when poverty is all the student knows - sometimes they don't care if they ever have anything better. "It was good enough for my parents, it must be good enough for me." Very sad!
Kim/K1/Ca - Implications for teaching are complicated. You have to learn how to properly relate to the parents......."talk to" and not "talk at"...... train the kids to use the formal register, look you in the eye. Discipline in poverty tends to be PUNISHMENT then forgiveness rather than change. You have to teach about choices.
Cynthia - cavey, thanks for the reassurance....
diane - well...not situational so much as the other influences of their native cultures may override? i'm guessing
cavey - don't know what's going on either!
Michelle/3/or - Sadie, the girl who brought the most food in last year (in my class) told me that they were foods her family had received but didn't want.
brad - I think it's a double bind. Most parents DO want their children to do better than themselves, but when it actually starts happening, there's a simultaneous ribbing/pride
Sadie T - "Talk to" instead of "talk at" is so important, Kim.
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, if a group decided on writing. Would they then research writing methods? Read a book on teaching writing?
Cynthia - Kim, I agree with all you have said! You seem to have been studying this in depth...
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, I haven't studied the instructional implications in depth. I am trying. Do you notice that sometimes when you discipline these kids they will smile?
Orion2b - is this a meeting for oen topic? first time here
Jan - Glenda, perhaps research a method of teaching writing, learn how to do it, and implement it classes. It needs to be something they DO, not just study.
Cynthia - Kim, I think the smiles are a way to nervously hide their true emotions....
brad - It is odd, with mine, because they don't quite understand an adult actually feeling for them, they're "talked at" at home.
Kim/K1/Ca - They are saving face. They haven't LEARNED how to function in middle class. So.... we have to teach them.
Cynthia - Kim, yes... that's it, saving face.
brad - When we first did a dialogue journal and I responded, so many were shocked that I had "actually wrote that."
Erin - I think the "talked at" extends to other monetary groups also
Jan - Glenda, the teachers need to try things in the classrooms, then bring back student work to analyze
Cynthia - have you read, Other People's children, by ...oohhh.. shoot! I can't remember her name!
Kim/K1/Ca - The most important IDEA is to build relationships. My apologies to those of you who aren't following. I will stop.
diane - kim, the comment about discipline reminds me of other people's children
Kim/K1/Ca - torey hayden?
Orion2b - do we remember what were as "them" when we were their age?
Sadie T - Kim, does what you've read suggest how to teach that without "putting down" their own culture?
diane - lisa delpit, cynthia
brad - Kim, but then there's a large question--should they be learning how to be middle class?? Selling out?? Going white??
Sadie T - Kim, don't stop.
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, Sadie! It does.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Kim, I've been following, with interest. There's not a lot of poverty where I teach, so this is interesting for me to read.
Cynthia - No... not torey hayden... Yes! Lisa Delpit! I learned a lot from her book, although I didn't necessarily agree with all she said.
Sadie T - Diane, I read that not too long ago. It was very interesting.
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad...good point. It is not about "going white" it is about "going money." Make sense?
brad - LOL, Kim, in my district it's "going white."
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, So, A faculty could select writing methods. Research for example 6 traits. Study and learn how to implement the 6 traits, Then by meeting in groups discuss and analyze how it is working in their rooms.
brad - but i know what YOU mean
diane - brad, lisa delpit addresses this...says it is an unfair consideration to take....that we would be holding people into poverty to not teach about the middle class values
Orion2b - not about going money. But about being human, yourself
Kim/K1/Ca - It is about empowering yourself to transform your world. Poverty is not what democracy is about. Democracy and education are about choices.
Cynthia - One of the things Lisa Delpit said was that we need to teach children 'the rules'... to know what to look for...
Alta Rose / 1-2 - What do you mean by going white, brad?
diane - not so much to transform students into "white" students but to give a fair chance to better situation
brad - and I agree, diane, you must be familiar with the culture of power to really accomplish anything, HOWEVER, this can build resentment, agreed?
diane - not at the expense of culture
Sadie T - Lisa Delpit talks about teaching it as two cultures that are equally valued, but used in different situations.
Orion2b - the self growing to fullest sense
Jan - Glenda, I think 6 traits would be excellent. Teachers would try certain aspects, then bring writing samples back to study group to see how things are going.
diane - yes...without question, but isn' that resentment already there?
Cynthia - yes, Sadie.
brad - Sorry Alta. I have not, (and from the looks of my class this year too) ever had a white student
Kim/K1/Ca - Like, I am not disrespecting your culture when I say you need to speak formal English in the business world. It is just how it is right now in this country..........valuing the culture, where you come from, who you are, but grasping at the world of choice.
Sadie T - I think there was an example about how you behave and dress for a fancy dinner as opposed to for a picnic. Both are good; they are just different and there is a different set of expectations for each.
diane - sadie, not to trivialize, but sort of like teaching writing for the state assessments and writing for real writing...two very different purposes
Orion2b - i think its a cul;utre of respect, true author ity, not power
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oh, I see, brad. With me, it's exactly the opposite.
brad - Black people from the ghetto consider people "on the soical ladder" going white, talking white, etc.
Kim/K1/Ca - In poverty, there is no choice. LIFE is what HAPPENS to you. With eduction, you gain voice, then choice.
cavey - I see these issues with minority GT kids hiding their intelligence so as not be accused of going white
MrsJ - What area do you teach in, Brad?
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, If 6 traits would work for writing, would it be possible to "research" the various methods used to teach comprehension stratiges?
brad - lol, the ghetto, mrsj
Sadie T - Diane, LOL, that's true! Good comparison.
Orion2b - poverty does not mean no education; slippery slope there
brad - yes, you can sometimes sense a "holding back" Cavey, especially from boys
Kim/K1/Ca - They tend to go hand in hand, Orion. Especially if it is generational. Situational is different.
diane - yes, cavey...my husband is native american...it would not be in his native culture to be identified as gifted...the value is placed upon helping others to succeed...same for many mexican cultures
Cynthia - Orion2, yes, I agree....
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I have my first black student this year, after 14 years of teaching. Dad is black, and Mom is caucasion. (sp?)
MrsJ - Brad, I don't teach in the ghetto, but I usually have only one or two white children
cavey - they value athletic prowess over intellect
Cynthia - hello, Ca Teacher!
Orion2b - however, it becomes a label, rather than empathy
brad - We're moving so fast tonite, I just read your quote Kim. IS that yours or did you get that from the book, "Life Happens. . .
Sadie T - Hi Ca Teacher
Jan - Yes, comprehension would be good, too. The problem with reading for BEGINNING study groups, is that it is more difficult to share student work.
Kim/K1/Ca - YES, diane! The "community" versus the "individual." Middle class is very "individual." Good or bad? Depends............
Orion2b - cynthia, thanks
brad - I think I should pick up this book. Is it dense, Kim? And did you find it on Amazon?
Kim/K1/Ca - This is why it is important that we, as teachers, build relationships.
Jan - Glenda, evidence is just harder to get in reading. Writing is so concrete!
Cynthia - Kim, and diane, I like the way you explain these concepts. thanks!
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, I can see what you mean. I want to suggest a study group at school this year. Writing skills is one area we have decided to focus on. This might be a great way to get us started.
brad - I just wasn't as impressed by Delpit. I think I read it too fast
Kim/K1/Ca - find it at aha process........brb
diane - brad, i had a hard time getting it...it has been "out of print"
brad - thirsty brb
Erin - Kim and everyone...I am in an upper middle class school...this is so interesting
Orion2b - who is middle class? who of us are these faceless labels? how much of the implications of the label are we? what do we really want to say that is personal and not abstract?
Kim/K1/Ca - www.ahaprocess.com
Sadie T - Delpit's book is interesting... there was a lot I didn't agree with, and a lot I did. Even the parts I disagreed with were really interesting though - good to learn about the ideas even if I don't agree with them.
Kim/K1/Ca - That is why we build the relationships, Orion. We get beyond the labels and connect with the humanity, the commonalities.............
Jan - I think writing would be wonderful. You can connect it to reading in that they learn how to write by modeling expert writers. But, I think writing is the best for beginning study groups to start with. You can really sink your teeth into it.
Cynthia - brad, I think it always helps to discuss these types of books with other. When I read it on my own, I didin't get as much out of it. Later, at another school, the whole staff read it and had a book talk on it, and WOW! those messages just kept flying out at me!
Orion2b - yes, kim, of course
Orion2b - but education and ploitical theory is littered with labels
Cynthia - Sadie, that's how I felt about Delpit's book. Not necesarily in agreement with all of it, but interesting to read her point of view.
Kim/K1/Ca - The book is called, "A Framework for Understanding Poverty." About $15 online.
diane - orion, interesting points...i have grown up in a "middle class" home...while i AM an individual, i also embody my background to some extent...it did shape my experiences...for example, going to college was NEVER a question in my household
Orion2b - often to get more words in and not enough personal story to leave the judgements (labels) to the listener
Glenda 1st TN - Okay Jan, you have convienced me. I'll see if I can get it started at school. I'm right in telling my principal that it needs to be done school wide not volunteer. Right?
brad - This is me, reading Delpit's book, "uh huh, uh huh, uh huh, And your point???"
MrsJ - brb
Sadie T - Kim, is it meant for educators, or is it about poverty in general?
Orion2b - dieane, thanks
diane - brad, try it again...
Kim/K1/Ca - Meant for educators, Sadie. A short read,,, lots of bullet points.
Cynthia - I grew up in a 'minority' home, and minority neighborhood. Had to learn 'how to play the game' the hard way.
brad - that's why I asked if Payne had some suggestions. Like I said, perhaps I need to reread Delpit
Erin - I grew up in lower middle class (barely) ..first one to graduate college
Jan - Yes, schoolwide. Check the Amazon site I linked you to, and wade through the pages where she talks about no one opting out. It is one of four critical attributes of study groups. You might want to show that to your principal.
brad - me too erin, i'm not even sure i was lower middle class, maybe upper lower class??
Michelle/3/or - going to college was a dream come true for me.
Kim/K1/Ca - There are suggestions, Brad. About instructional strategies. I just haven't mastered them yet.
Sadie T - Yes, Brad, I think you should read it again. Don't look at it as an "all-or-nothing" book, if you don't like some parts, keep reading the others.
brad - I'm not looking for solutions, just some guidelines
Erin - We were in that situation because my dad abandoned the family. My mom always knew the value of education
Kim/K1/Ca - www.ahaprocess.com $15 Brad........worth it.
Orion2b - i would say the macro idea of "background" is ultimately grounded in very personal early experiences that persuaded us to join the label/culture/class
Cynthia - lol@brad! I can just hear it! Well, in my case, being a 'minority' (and you can tell I don't like that label by my quotation marks) I could readily relate to some of Delpit's observations, but did not necessarily agree with many others.
Glenda 1st TN - Jan, I'll go to the link first thing tomorrow. You are a doll. Thanks for all you do for all of us on this board.
brad - I do so hate programs that say "balanced literacy" is not good for minority children
diane - these issues have had real implications in my life...i had never really encountered the culture of poverty until i met my husband. such an eye opener...
Kim/K1/Ca - One is teaching organizational strategies and time management. Time is a value..........
Jan - Glenda, thanks!
Sadie T - I hate programs that say ANYTHING is not good for "minority children". You can't generalize that!
brad - Cynthia, what can you "just hear"
Erin - Gotta go you guys. Have to get up early for my class. See you on the chatboard
diane - ahhh, but orion, have we really "joined" the label/culture/class?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good night, Erin!
brad - so you grew up middle class, diane?
diane - night erin!
Cynthia - brad... where you say, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh... and your point is?
Kim/K1/Ca - Bye, Erin!
Glenda 1st TN - Brad, I was just going to turn in but you peeked my interest. What programs say balanced literacy is not good for minority studnts and why? What is their reasoning???
Michelle/3/or - good night, erin!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I'm wondering the same, Glenda.
brad - Some "studies" (notice the quotes) have been done saying we are doing a disservice to our young black men by not teaching them phonics in the name of "balanced literacy." I say, "Then it's not freaking balanced literacy if there are no phonics!"
Kim/K1/Ca - I did not see this in the book, but one "strategy" I think is important is for the teacher to have plenty of good, quality literature that has children that LOOK just like the children in the class.
diane - i did, brad, there were definite lean years for sure as my father's business took a tumble with the economy, but i couldn't say that we were ever in dire straights financially...nor did the "values" (such as they are for good or bad) change
Orion2b - diane, its too easy to make flip references to categorize ourselves and others when we dont know their story. Id rather hear the story and not be told the labels
Alta Rose / 1-2 - No kidding, brad! And if there is no phonics, it's a disservice to ALL children.
Kim/K1/Ca - I lived in situational poverty as a child and as an adult. Your values don't change......... it is good for the perspective, though.
brad - There really are movements to go "back to basics" for black children. I think they are coming into play because, as Kim has said, so many minority students don't have that 1000 hours of literacy experience so some teachers rush into these approaches class unseen, when some of these students can't even hold a book correctly.
Glenda 1st TN - Amen to that one Alta Rose
diane - oh, orion, i don't want you to think that i generalize any individual and dismiss them based on labels...i agree with you about the individual stories that make up a person's identities
Michelle/3/or - when what they really need is to be read to...those missing hours of literacy experience.
Cynthia - Kim, I work with a community of hispanics. They are very poor and pretty much confined to their general neighborhoods due to lack of transportation, mostly due to poverty. I feel like I need to expose them, all the more, to books that show and value, not only themselves, but also show what they have in common with other cultures.
brad - Kim, did you see my quote about reading black literature to black children?
Michelle/3/or - and talked to.
Kim/K1/Ca - Dr. Payne says that in poverty, the ability to tell stories and entertain is held in high regard.
Orion2b - diane i dont think you do. I dont even know you, whether you say you are middle class or not
Sadie T - But, this isn't just about minorities, it's the same for children from any culture. We need to stop saying "it's bad for minorities." Should be: "It's bad for children who don't have access to books."
Kim/K1/Ca - I have a book on family literacy that addresses that very issue, Cynthia.
Kim/K1/Ca - amen SADIE
Jan - Phone call, folks...see you on the board. Thanks for the great chat!
diane - lol, kim, you just reminded me of the lean years when my husband would "make" maple syrup from water and maple extract...
diane - night jan
Orion2b - amen sadie!
Sadie T - bye Jan
brad - "Black children don't just need me to hold up a mirror, they also need me to hold up a window that they can see out of as well."
Michelle/3/or - Cynthia, I got a real eye-opener to that when we took our 3rd graders on a field trip last year. It happened to be in Portland, which is 30 miles from here. They all started cheering when we got to portland, and oohing and aahing at the sight of the river. They had never seen anything like it!
Kim/K1/Ca - YES, Brad...... it is a matter of human dignity and respect.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's right, Sadie. I have seen many white children who are also literacy-deprived, and it's not necessarily due to poverty. (Sorry if that is ging off track.)
Sadie T - How about a door instead of a window, Brad?
diane - michelle, that same thing happens when we take our kids to portland...
Sadie T - Alta, that is really true.
brad - We were comparing/contrasting a city and a country poem one day and my kids thought country life was part of history. "Do they have cars, Mr. Johnson? Can they get a pizza, do they eat pizza?"
Michelle/3/or - kim, sounds like that book by...i can't remember who...about the kids in "Trackton" who learned to tell stories real well, but didn't do well in school.
Cynthia - I agree with you, brad. kids need to see all cultures, and one of the ways to do it is to expose them to lots of literature with cross cultural issues
Orion2b - literacy deprived from a gameboy!
Cynthia - Michelle, yes, so many children grow up with what so many teachers take for granted.
brad - cynthia, where do you teach?
Orion2b - michelle what is that book? always looking for stories
Kim/K1/Ca - As a white teacher, the ONLY way I can get students to understand the horrors of racism and genocide is with literature. Powerful literature.
Cynthia - One year, when my team partner was teaching reading and doing the typical vocab development lesson, she was shocked to find that kids had no idea what a quilt was!
Sadie T - I think when people say "minorities need..." "minorities don't have..." they are avoiding the real issues
brad - The lack of prior knowledge can be shocking
Kim/K1/Ca - Hear you, Cynthia...........it is like those "cultural IQ tests."
cavey - you guys are bring me back to my past with at risk preschool
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh cavey.........that is where my heart is, I am afraid.
Orion2b - excellent discusion
Cynthia - What do you mean, Sadie?
brad - If I were teaching in a rural community, like my student teaching, I would give very little background for "Charlotte's Web." But where I teach now, there's so so much to cover
cavey - it is truly a labor of love Kim
Kim/K1/Ca - When I made peanut butter in a blender.........some of my kids were shocked. They thought it was magic.
cavey - same peanut butter story here
Kim/K1/Ca - I would rather labor with kids who genuinely NEED me than the ones in Debbie Miller's book any day.........truly.
Orion2b - any suggestions for student reading us history 11th grade
brad - Kim, what was the instructional value behind peanut butter in a blender??
Cynthia - Kim! lol!! even "I" was shocked when I learned how to make things like peanut butter or applesauce! So many times I forget that I grew up poor and/or deprived like the students I teach!
Michelle/3/or - Orion, I just can't recall the title of the book right now. I read it years ago as part of a linguistics class...it was written in the 70's...sorry.
MrsJ/bcps - My kids are always shocked when I say, "my husband"
diane - i've been booted again...hope i haven't offended anyone
Cynthia - Kim, which book are you referring to by Debbie Miller?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hi diane!
cavey - Shut up Brad we're bonding here
Orion2b - Michelle, thanks, no worry
Sadie T - We should focus on the issue not on whether or not the issue is faced by minorities. We say "minorities don't have access to books," that puts the blame on others. We say "some of our students don't have access to books", we focus on that problem, it makes it a community issue not a "them"-issue.
MrsJ/bcps - What if the kids who need you could become like the students in Miller's book. Isn't it possible?
brad - I always have to explain when I talk about soccer or when there's soccer talk in a book
Orion2b - Michelle did you say trackton?
Michelle/3/or - I, too, looked at the peanut butter machine at the grocery store in awe the first time i saw it!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I agree 100%, Sadie.
brad - I think you could be right Sadie, worth investigating
Cynthia - lol@cavey! It's okay... brad seems to be a natural at asking questions... he's keeping us honest! LOL!
Michelle/3/or - yes, orion, it was a case study about two towns...Trackton and another town.
Kim/K1/Ca - Reading With Meaning........the teacher profiled in Mosaic of Thought.....Debbie Miller.
brad - <-----thick skin
diane - okay...i was kidding...but have i offended someone?
cavey - he know i'm kidding
Orion2b - Michelle, 'll find it, thanks
Sadie T - Michelle... peanut butter machine? I think I'd look at it in awe too. I don't know what a peanut butter machine is??
Cynthia - Sadie, the thing is some of the minorities DO have books, and travel and know how to take part in good discussions. Problem is, too many more of them don't.
brad - That reminds me--Alta Rose you are always apologizing to me thinking you've offended me. STOP. It takes a lot to offend me, and trust me, I'd let you know
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, of course, Kim..... I have some of those kids and I love them dearly. BUt my heart is with the kids without jackets who beg me for a chance to "look at my books" when they get a spare minute.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Ok, brad!
Michelle/3/or - you put the peanuts in fresh at the store and it makes peanut butter for you right then and there. very cool
brad - <-------crocodile hide
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Lol, brad!
brad - okay, my level of prior knowledge has just expanded. I have never seen a peanut butter machine
Kim/K1/Ca - I told you about Clifford awhile back? A kid from extrme circumstances. Loved my snake. I bought him a snake book. He carried it around for days. Wrote in it....."notes."
Cynthia - I was at a school where we all voted to conduct home visits for all of our students, providing the parents agreed, which they did! Again, this was a very poor community. Well, when I went to one home, what attracted me was the sound of piano playing. the older sister of the boy in my class had studied piano...
Orion2b - Micheele, I think it might be this book: Heath, S. B. (1983). Ways with words. Cambridge, MA: Cambridge University Press
Michelle/3/or - your skin is very scaly, brad? need some lotion?
Sadie T - Cynthia, that is exactly what I was trying to get at. People too often say "minorities" when it isn't ALL minorities or ONLY minorities. It could be anyone. It seems like saying "minorities" is a way of saying "their problem," of not taking responsibility or saying it's because of their minority status like "it can't be helped."
cavey - They absolutely love the books and the songs and the rhymes
MrsJ/bcps - That's what I mean, Kim. I guess I'm naive. I teach at a school like you describe. I truly believe that I can help those kids look like the kids in Debbie Miller
Michelle/3/or - that's it, orion
diane - anyone???
brad - I agree, Sadie, A wide range of backgrounds in my all-minority room
MrsJ/bcps - oops! Debbie Miller's book. Maybe they won't have nice clothes and fancy backpacks, but they can be the powerful thinkers
Kim/K1/Ca - That's the goal, Kim, huh?
brad - anyone what??
Cynthia - After entering the home I found that another sister was a painter, the father was a writer and the mother studied music in college, but stayed home to provide a good supportive life for her children. That was an amazing family!
Orion2b - Michelle, thanks again
brad - Kim throws wet blankets on my goals, KIM II
brad - Of course, it IS my goal to serve a ho ho with every entree in the cafeteria
diane - brad, was starting to feel ignored...hoped i hadn't offended anyone somehow
Kim/K1/Ca - But look at the VALUES in that home, Cynthia. Education was valued. Strong family.
Cynthia - Again, I'm considered a 'minority' yet I am not one of my students. I guess you could say I WAS one of them, but probably because my mother sent us to the library all the time, I got to where I loved books and therefore succeeded in school and was able to go on to college.
MrsJ/bcps - Shouldn't it be? I don't want less for my "at-risk" students than I do for those who have had the literacy background
brad - did you miss my post on crocodile hide, diane?
cavey - It's been great y'all, but it's very late, gotta go
Kim/K1/Ca - diane..sorry. some of our servers are faster and our messages get on quickly........we overwhelm.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's exactly right, Sadie. I have a boy who is struggling and who I see is literacy-deprived, but it's not because he is a "minority." Note the quotation marks. Literacy is not valued in his home.
diane - brad, that may have been when i was booted....
cavey - Cynthia join us on the board
Glenda 1st TN - As always I've had fun, But I've got to turn in. Nite all
Kim/K1/Ca - ((smooches, cavey!))
Cynthia - Kim! Exactly!!!!!!!! they were still poor, but that didn't keep them from persuing education via books, music and art! (the father had had a stroke and had to start his life over again.)
diane - jeez...started out as a joke...sorry...nevermind...lol
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Night, cavey!
Michelle/3/or - yes, when people comment on how well our kids do, even with low-ses backgrounds, I tell them, it doesn't matter what the income is...these parents CARE! They work hard so their kids succeed.
Orion2b - is this group here every night? is this called the Meeting Room?
brad - Yes, Cynthia, where have you been??
diane - night, cavey
Kim/K1/Ca - I am soooooo thirsty. Out of diet tonic water.........yikes.
Cynthia - right, michelle....
Kim/K1/Ca - No, Orion. We live chat on Fri nites only. Otherwise we are on the Prof Reading Chatboard.
Cynthia - Where have I been, brad?? what do you mean?
brad - How can water be diet??
Orion2b - am i invisble?
Sadie T - Orion, Professional Reading chat is every Friday night. Other nights they have different topics here, different groups of people.
Kim/K1/Ca - Exemplary teaching is what makes all the difference, Michelle....
Cynthia - HI Orion! You are not invisible.... Peek a boo! I see you! LOL!
Orion2b - kim thanks. where is the prof reading?
diane - cynthia, he means why haven't you been posting on the prof reading board?
brad - Have you been lurking on the board?? In other words, how did you get here this evening. You seem to be, how should I say, "one of us,"
diane - brad...we sound a little like a cult...lol
Orion2b - brad are you speaking of me
Cynthia - Sadie, I didn't realize that this group met on Fridays... This was a very interesting chat.
Kim/K1/Ca - Orion.....sometimes it takes awhile for a response to be posted..............nobody is ignoring you. You are too valuable to this conversation.
brad - Or should I say, "You don't teach jewelry??" (bad llama)
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
Orion2b - Kim...blushing
Kim/K1/Ca - It is one of the chatboards here at Tnet.........."profreading"
Sadie T - Bad llama??
Cynthia - LOL, Brad! I've been around T.net a long time. I usually dont get to chat tho, because I'm off on some project...
Orion2b - cool
diane - by the way...technical question...how do you post an instant message? i'm tech impaired
Orion2b - i cam ehere via esubjects.com
diane - brad....shame
brad - TNet is one thing, "our board" is another. It's different there, it has that certain je ne sais quoi
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Jess! Hi!
diane - hi jess!!
Kim/K1/Ca - cynthia and orion....join us on the prof board. we have some really great discussions.
Sadie T - Hi Jess!
Jess/3rd/Mn - Oh darn....I had forgotten about the chat on Fridays.....just got home
Orion2b - llama???
Kim/K1/Ca - JESS!!!
Jess/3rd/Mn - almost time for bed, hello all, my first time
Orion2b - hi jess
Cynthia - Ohhh! Hmmm.... so... is this an 'invitation only' group?
Sadie T - www.teachers.net/mentors/profreading <--- Professional Reading board (for those who are new)
Orion2b - brad i will be a first year teacher
Michelle/3/or - Jess....glad to see you
diane - oh, orion, have a great year!
brad - No, but there does seem to be an initiation of sorts. LOL
Michelle/3/or - cynthia...definitely not! I'm glad you found us!
Kim/K1/Ca - You will have to go through hazing, yes..........
Jess/3rd/Mn - I see many familiar names from the prof. reading board, when do your chats end?
brad - orion, where and I'm assuming second?
diane - yes, kim...
Cynthia - Hmmm.. well, then brad, *bracing myself but squinting my eyes for fear of what lies ahead* What might the initiation consist of?
Michelle/3/or - when we are too tired to go on, jess.
Orion2b - thanks diane
Alta Rose / 1-2 - No specified time, Jess. Sometimes we go late into the night...
diane - cynthia, you have to make a diorama out of coffee cans
brad - Oh, I'd say you passed. Hope you have thick skin>LOL
Michelle/3/or - you have to define Synthesis.
Kim/K1/Ca - The initiation is EATING a box of HO HO's.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - diane, lol!
brad - LOL Diane, here's your first question, Cynthia, "What do you think of dioramas?"
MrsJ/bcps - ooh, good one, Michelle
Orion2b - brad yes high school in bay area ca
Sadie T - You have to somehow get into Kim's classroom
Cynthia - Awwww, diane!!!!!!!!!! All I have are pringle cans!! Darn! Guess I can't join! LOL!! *wondering if tuna cans might do the trick*
Orion2b - brad, and you?
Cynthia - MMMM!!!!!! Kim!!!!!!! EATING a box of HOHO's?????????? I'm there!!!!!!!!! LOL!! (beats eating tuna any day!)
brad - I have Pringle cans too. Soul Sistah
Orion2b - dioramas are the cosmos of youth
brad - Okay, AND she knows about Ho ho's. This girl is in for sho
diane - we'd let you use pringles cans...character in a can anyone?
Cynthia - Michelle: ok..here goes: synthesis is... when you write an absolutely thesis statement.. it becomes a SIN-thesis! How's that?
Michelle/3/or - I have the ends of juice concentrate cans....
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good one, Cynthia!
Sadie T - Michelle, you can use them to make wind chimes.
brad - i am in 2/ohio
Orion2b - was that cyn thesis?
Orion2b - from the sis
Cynthia - Brad, I think dioramas are .. *hmmm.. what answer would brad want*... I think dioramas are overused.
Sadie T - LOL Orion
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL you guys.,.......
Jess/3rd/Mn - Michelle.....juice can ends make great catipillar name plates for a door
Sadie T - Cynthia is definitely "one of us"
MrsJ/bcps - Are you sure you haven't been lurking on the profboard, Cynthia?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Kim, did you hear what Jess said????
brad - The real answer is Dioramas are butt ugly, right Kim?
diane - jess, what are catepillar name plates?
Michelle/3/or - i used them for graphing when i taught first grade, but my grandparents still collect them for me.
Orion2b - poor catepillars....so close to young faces and yet so far
Cynthia - oops, I messed up bad! I need to do a replay... synthesis is... when you write an absolutely HORRIBLE thesis statement.. it becomes a SIN-thesis! Does that make better sense???
Kim/K1/Ca - OH NO.......not the caterpillar................
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<running from the room screaming.....
Michelle/3/or - Cynthia has been thoroughly hazed, i believe
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Kim wants more caterpillars! Bring on the caterpilllars!!
Sadie T - LOL, good definition of cyn-thesis Cynthia
brad - Okay, I'm planning a thematic unit on caterpillars
Jess/3rd/Mn - connect the circles to create a caterpillar, paint one for the head, and the others become your name
Cynthia - MrsJ... *raising right hand* I promise that I have not been lurking on the prof board. I just 'stumbled in here' and now... I'm trying to pass the hazing!
Orion2b - what is the spleeing and etymology of caterpillar?
Orion2b - spelling
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<<<<<still screaming in the other room. Neighbors are calling 911
Orion2b - ok 3hrs sleep last night is kicking in
diane - ahhh, thanks, jess, i thought i had missed out on something mysterious
Cynthia - sadie! Good play on my name, too! LOL! Cyn-sational!!!!!!!!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - You're doing a great job, Cynthia!
brad - We are actually creating a "life size" caterpillar to hang in the hall
Jess/3rd/Mn - not to be done as a school activity, maybe an art activity, I did it for a summer school activity in July
Michelle/3/or - but you still have all your organs tonight, kim?
Kim/K1/Ca - colon, dash, close paranthese : - )
diane - kim, do you have a fear of caterpillars?
diane -
Cynthia - Michelle, I must be thoroughly hazed, because I feel thoroughly dazed! LOL
Kim/K1/Ca -
Orion2b - how many legs does a caterpillar have any ways....and do they "know"
Jess/3rd/Mn - ok.....what is the least amount of time spent teaching each strategy one has done....successfully?
brad - ohmigosh, someone's serious
Kim/K1/Ca - I went on and on about thematic units with Eric Carle being overdone.........hence, the caterpillar jokes.
Michelle/3/or - good question, jess...I've never done less than 4 weeks.
Orion2b - Jess 1 second
diane - jess...i would say 4 weeks...but it was questioning and easier for the kids to grasp somehow
brad - I've never done a durn thing successfully my whole life jess, so don't ask me.
Kim/K1/Ca - That's too metacognitive, Orion.
Jess/3rd/Mn - I am planning my school year and really would like to teach all the traits before our big state report.......
Michelle/3/or - yeah, most K teachers I know just adore Eric Carle.
MrsJ/bcps - Us 3rd grade teachers are very dignified, you know!
diane - oh yeah...thought maybe you had a fear of insects/bugs...i have a @#$%roach as a class pet
Jess/3rd/Mn - I also would like to spiral when done with all strategies (not traits....I am confused as of now)
Alta Rose / 1-2 - When is that report, Jess? What grade level?
brad - jess, have you taught third
Orion2b - jess what traits? of caterpillars? that might be too much of an undertaken? or crawling?
Kim/K1/Ca - <<<<screaming with dignity in the other room. Neighbor's dogs are howling.
Cynthia - LOL@@#$%roach and the 'filter'!
brad - And why wouldn't they adore Carle. He teaches all concepts and nice stories to boot (time, colors, days of week)
Michelle/3/or - I don't do class pets. I got affirmation on that when a 4th grade teacher's rabbit died...when she had a sub!
Jess/3rd/Mn - this will be my 3rd year in fourth. I've also taught 4th, 6th and 1st/2nd
Jess/3rd/Mn - I have a hedgehog....class pet
Orion2b - yum
Cynthia - Kim, what's going on? Why are you screaming? Is it a 'for real' kind of scream or a chatroom cyber kind of scream?
brad - Sonic?
MrsJ/bcps - Oh, geez, just assumed the 3rd in Jess/3rd/Mn meant 3rd. Strike that remark about 3rd grade teachers!
Jess/3rd/Mn - the traits i referred to refer to six traits (I didn't mean to do that)
diane - jess, schema was an easier one for my kids to grasp as well...now that they are coming to me with some experience in strategies, i bet it will take about 4 weeks
Orion2b - six traits? i think this is an elementart reference?
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh Cynthia........ I am screaming about the caterpillar. Cuz I went on and on about how Eric Carle's book is overdone. So they all teased me. I screamed. In cyberspace, of course.]
diane - no, mrsj, you're still right about 3rd grade teachers...
Jess/3rd/Mn - I might need to go to bed......I meant to type that I am going into my 3rd year as a 3rd grade teacher and that I have also taught 4th, 6th, and 1st/2nd
Orion2b - who's the tart?!
brad - Jess, I wouldn't sweat rushing the strategies before state test. Just do the ones you get to well and take them slow, and Ill bet they do better. Better to go slow and get it then to go too fast and not
Orion2b - elementary
Kim/K1/Ca - I would do schema and connections first.
Cynthia - Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Okay, Kim! NOW I get it!! Geee! I'm so lame!!!!!! But I'm a newbie! How was I s'posed to know? hee hee!
Michelle/3/or - it will be really interesting for me this year. Half the kids i will have, i had as 1st graders. Those ones were taught the strategies, but not the others. it will be interesting to see what they've retained.
Jess/3rd/Mn - BRAD: no, her name is groucho
Kim/K1/Ca - You see, cyn......you didn't have any SCHEMA.
MrsJ/bcps - Oh, yeah, I was right Jess (and Diane) Thanks!
diane - yes, brad, you are sure right...the state tests in oregon have nothing to do with the strategies anyway
Cynthia - Kim, yes! I lack Schema!!!!!!!!! But will need to do some scheming to figure out the 'in' jokes by the 'in' crowd!
brad - If the state tests did have something to do with anything that's real, NO ONE would sweat them
diane - michelle, my first day of solo student teaching, the class gerbil died...bad luck
Orion2b - well i must sleep. this has been excellent. so are you on prof reading chat during the week?
MrsJ/bcps - Michelle, I am getting back my first graders this year as 3rd graders too. Unfortunately, I didn't know about MOT, STW, and RWM then. This will be my first year teaching the strategies
Jess/3rd/Mn - Not state test, state report, I usually have them choose a state to research in February....may push it back this year
Cynthia - Amen that that, brad!
Sadie T - state tests are sort of a "you-know-it-or-you-don't" sort of thing. not much point in trying to rush stuff in before the test, they may not "get it" well enough anyway
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Just read and post on the chatboard, cynthia.
Kim/K1/Ca - Sorry, Cyn........... our jokes must seem pretty lame. But WE laugh uproariously. (Brad wil have to look that one up)
Cynthia - ooops! Darn! that typed up wrong! replay! Amen, to that, Brad!
diane - orion, on the chatboard during the week, not the chatroom
Sadie T - Jess, now I get it
brad - Well that's a horse of a different color, Jess. Why do you want them to have strategies done by state report in Feb?
Kim/K1/Ca - Alta........how is you son doing?
Orion2b - night
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Goodnight, orion! Nice to have you here!
Sadie T - Goodnight Orion!
Cynthia - Kim, no problemo at all!! I'll just bring along some of my own... and YOU'll wonder what the heck I'm 'screaming' about, too! Deal??? Deal!
Kim/K1/Ca - Horse of a different color........... hee hee hee..........was somebody watching Mary Poppins today, Brad?
diane - night orion
Michelle/3/or - 'night, orion!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Thanks for asking, Kim. He sees the specialist later this week. I will let everyone know.
Kim/K1/Ca - DEAL
brad - I thought it was TWOZ
Jess/3rd/Mn - in the past i felt their reports were more of a regurgitation of facts....making no sense, i want to tie in the six traits of writing and the strategies will help them to read the nonfiction books and web sites
Kim/K1/Ca - Are you worried?
diane - okay...what the heck is TWOZ? i only missed one week , i thought
Orion2b - thanks good night hope to meet here again
Cynthia - Kim, "horse of a different color" is from The Wizard of OZ...
brad - Well, just be sure to do DI before then; if that's your cause
Cynthia - Brad! *raising hand in the air* High five, buddy! GMTA!
Kim/K1/Ca - (ashamed) oh yeah
Sadie T - the "determining importance" strategy should help with the state reports then?
brad - Back atcha Cynthia
Jess/3rd/Mn - Brad.........I was thinking that. I can accomplish that if I spend 4 wks. on each one.
Jess/3rd/Mn - I don't know WHAT to do with synthesizing.....
diane - hello? TWOZ??
Jess/3rd/Mn - Have some time to think about that one though.
MrsJ/bcps - Ah, regretably, I must call it a night. Didn't know about your Friday night chats. Glad I stumbled in. See you on the boards
Sadie T - Jess, start w/ DI, questioning, leave synthesizing for later
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad........bring me a diet Dr. Pepper, wouldja? Ice.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Actually, not really, Kim. Because both drs who saw him think that it's not anything serious. (The bump on his head.) The only reason he is being referred to a specialist is because I visualized the lump right before I discovered it. If it weren't for that, my family dr. wouldn't have made the referral, but he doesn't want to take the chance of ignoring any warning I might have been receiving.
Cynthia - diane The Wizard Of Oz... TWO oz
Michelle/3/or - Like Jan said, just call it Determining Theme or Main Idea....
Sadie T - Goodnight MrsJ
brad - TWOZ--The Wizard of Oz
Sadie T - TWOZ = The Wizard of Oz
Kim/K1/Ca - Kim...........go to the profreading board...........it is a hoot.
diane - jess, especially if this is your first time teaching the strategies, i'd really give yourself permission to take it slow
diane - thanks! now i'm AUOI!
Michelle/3/or - Alta...that's great that they take that seriously!
diane - alta, i'm so impressed that your doctor is taking that seriously...how often they don't
Cynthia - High five to all the TWOZies!
MrsJ/bcps - I'm there quite often, lurking more than posting though--also the yahoo groups mosaic board--I see many of your names there too. Thanks, goodnight
brad - Not being AUOI about TWOZ is sooooo unacceptable, Diane, Glad you're there now
Kim/K1/Ca - Well, let us know, please.
diane - lol, michelle, great minds think alike
diane - i've also never had a ho ho...i'm so ashamed
Cynthia - Ok, well... Now that I've been hazed and even knew what TWOZ stood for, may I ask a really serious question?
Michelle/3/or - it's cuz we are in Oregon, diane...
Sadie T - Cynthia can be Director of High Fives for ESIA
brad - ARgh!! You people in the Northwest and your ho ho deprivation
Kim/K1/Ca - y'all can knock it off about the TWOZ now.....sheesh.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Does that make sense? My doctor and I are friends, and we are both Christians. The way I look at it, it's just a coincidence, or if I am being given a warning, there 's a reason for it, and everything'll be OK. But I WILL breathe easier once I know for sure. Thanks again.
Cynthia - MrsJ.. yeah. I'm in the yahoo Mosaic group, too... just read... still taking it all in!
Sadie T - Cynthia, what's your serious question?
Michelle/3/or - NO! Only diane on that, Brad...remember, they were a major part of my diet when i was in high school!
diane - true....when was the last time brad had a really good steamer clam, i wonder
Cynthia - Wooohooo!!! I"m the DIRECTOR!!!!!!! lol
Jess/3rd/Mn - Do any of you use the MPIRs (reading assessments) that are in the back of MOT
Kim/K1/Ca - Not yet, Jess..
Sadie T - Alta, that is really good, the way you and the doctor are looking at this. You are right, it is either nothing, or you got the warning so that it could be taken care of.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Hope that makes sense. My hubby isn't worried, either. Both of the doctors who saw him think it's just a ridge where the muscle meets the bone. OK, I'm done!
Michelle/3/or - Jess, I haven't
Cynthia - Sadie, Serious Question #1 of 234,434,239 to come.... If I want to start with the strategies in MOT, do I need to start with specific books??? (third grade)
brad - I'm not really into clams, di, just those bottomless buckets of crab.
brad - Jess, I haven't but may try this year
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's the hope I'm clinging, too, Sadie.
Kim/K1/Ca - You can't go wrong with Cynthia Rylant books, Cyn.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - oops. "to" not "too."
Michelle/3/or - actually, i've never tried clams. and i hate salmon
brad - (what if she is Cynthia Rylant??) (Kim, get your tongue in)
Jess/3rd/Mn - didn't write the title down ,brad....what was it?
diane - cynthia, there are certainly lists (try the yahoo site) that suggest books for each strategy, but the connections have to be authentic...so use the titles that grab you
Cynthia - hee hee!! Ok, everyone! I can now reveal my true Identity!!!!!!!!!!! and you WIN the prize!!!!!!!!!!!
Michelle/3/or - you don't need to start with any specific books, though, cynthia
Cynthia - brad, How did you know I was Cynthia Rylant????????????
Sadie T - Yes, she's Cynthia Rylant and she was just wondering if we'd mention her books or not.
diane - oh man...how can anyone not like salmon and live in oregon? i am in shock...
Jess/3rd/Mn - Well, then good about the MPIRs....I don't think I'll do them this year, as it is my first year with Six Traits and MOT
Kim/K1/Ca - Don't tease me...........sheesh. I would donate a body part to meet Cynthia Rylant.
Cynthia - so, when I plan, should I start with a given strategy and find books to go along with the strategy?
brad - And I did, so I WIN THE PRIZE. bOO-YAH (NOW YOU FEELING SALTY)
Sadie T - Cynthia, next time you want to hide your true identity, here's a hint: don't use your real name.... LOL
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Cynthia, check the Prof. Reading board. I posted a link that has books for each strategy.
diane - cynthia, that's what i do.
Sadie T - Kim, just donate one of the body parts that pops out.
diane - lol, sadie
Kim/K1/Ca - Think about your own connections to a piece of good literature.............like "The Whales."
Kim/K1/Ca - I think I need my liver, though.
brad - She should connect to it after all SHE WROTE IT
Cynthia - Brad!!!!! AND the prize is.... (insert drum roll) YOU get to buy me the entire collection of CYNTHIA RYLANT books, because ..um.. my publisher sold them all... and.. um...er...uh... I lost the disk I had written the books on!
brad - Michelle don't like Salmon, I don't like liver
Michelle/3/or - oh yeah....just pick one of your own books...you'll have no problem
Cynthia - Sadie! Shhhh! Let's just keep my lil secret to ourselves! I was giving our friend brad a head start!!!!
Michelle/3/or - brad....the thing is...I'm expected to like salmon. EVERYONE likes salmon here.
diane - eeeeuuuuuwwwww....liver
Sadie T - Hey Cynthia, that could happen. When I worked @ a university library we had a professor who was always checking out books he'd written!
Kim/K1/Ca - Also....Mem Fox, Patricia Polacco
Cynthia - right, brad! I wrote those books! Thanks for reminding me! I tend to forget because...ummm.. er... because I'm so humble I forget I'm a great author!
brad - yes, and everyone here is supposed to like Cincinnati style chili
Kim/K1/Ca - Does Cincinnatti even have chili that isn't in a can?
Cynthia - Sadie, that's absolutely right! Why, er.. uh.. .just yesterday I went to the library to check out one of my books, but I lent it out!
brad - It's not in a can if you're HERE, goofy
Michelle/3/or - oh...this reminds me of what I was originally thinking of when i joined this chat tonight...the whole Katie Wood Ray collection
Jess/3rd/Mn - Cynthia....this site was referred to me by another board regular: http://www.middleweb.com/ReadWrkshp/Juliindex.html. It was helpful
brad - We also have Mike Sell's Potato Chips and White Castles
Cynthia - Ok.. let's get something else straight.. I LOVE LIVER.. and I LOVE SALMON!!!!!!! Yum!!!
Michelle/3/or - Cynthia, you should know...Katie Ray is your biggest fan.
Kim/K1/Ca - those itty bitty burgers?
brad - Salmon, eh. take it or leave it
Sadie T - Okay Cynthia, but do you like Ho-Ho's and frosted ragout?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Can't get the site to work, Jess.
diane - what's a white castle? and who is mike sell?
Kim/K1/Ca - NO! I am Cynthia Rylant's biggest fan.
Cynthia - Jess... page came up.. 'not found'...
brad - yes, kim, otherwise known as "sliders"
Michelle/3/or - I was thinking of the whold "co-teacher" thing...you know, picking an author to help you
Jess/3rd/Mn - Nice talking with you! I need to go to bed. Adios!
Kim/K1/Ca - Nighty night, Jess.......zzzzzzzzzz
brad - Oh Diane, you are so deprived up there in the forests of the NW
diane - night, jess
Sadie T - try http://www.middleweb.com/ReadWrkshp/Juliindex.html without the dot at the end
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Fresh salmon, right from the ocean. Love it!
Michelle/3/or - good night, jess.
Cynthia - Katie Ray is my biggest fan!! why of course! I've received those fan letters! I still have them!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good night, Jess!
Michelle/3/or - i've heard of white castle...but that's it
brad - Michelle, what are you thinking about co-teachers
Sadie T - good night Jess
Cynthia - Sadie,, I LOVE HOHO's!! but.. frosted ragout??? not so much.. or .. not so sure even what it is!
Jess/3rd/Mn - hope that helps
Jess/3rd/Mn - bye
Michelle/3/or - lol, cynthia...anyway, has anyone else picked a "co-teacher of writing"
Jess/3rd/Mn - co-teachers....is that referred to me?
Cynthia - Thanks, Sadie and Jess! That worked...
Jess/3rd/Mn - i have a co-teacher
brad - That does it. when we have our ESIA yearly conference, I'm bringing ho ho's and white castles
Sadie T - No one is sure what it is, Cynthia, but it's a staple food around here.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Another site added to the bookmarks!
Michelle/3/or - hey! this isn't the color I picked!
Cynthia - co-teacher of writing?? not sure what that's about...
diane - michelle, i plan on several...polacco, ringgold, rylant, bunting
Cynthia - brad, I wanna be where you are! yum!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Well, I couldn't find any Ho Hos in my town. But haven't had the chance to check the city yet.
Kim/K1/Ca - Cyn....Katie Ray says you use a good author to help you teach writing.................by studying the craft.
Cynthia - I met ringold.. she was so wonderful to our students.. signed EACH book for them! they were in awe of her!
brad - I need to get down and dirty at the library next week and really come away with a passion for a certain auathor of primary. I just don't have one yet. I love Rylant, but that's so mundane
Michelle/3/or - I love polacco and bunting...i need to read more of rylant.
Cynthia - right, Kim....
diane - oh, cynthia, i am jealous...ringgold is one of my all time favorites
Cynthia - OOps! I mean... when I used to teach... now that I'm a famous author.. I don't go visit other authors as much!
diane - michelle...you're disappearing
Michelle/3/or - didn't want to copy kim
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I don't know if he would work as a co-teacher, but Kevin Henkes is one close to my heart.
Cynthia - brad, you need to FALL IN LOVE with an author??
brad - Jealous, Cyn?
Cynthia - I really do like polacco AND bunting....
Kim/K1/Ca - mundane................???????????????????????
Cynthia - She was wonderful!! I loved her presentation!
brad - I really like Sciezka, but he's not exactly ripe for disscussion or strategy
diane - keep calm kim
Sadie T - Brad just likes to be DIFFERENT. He'd make a good Californian.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - And Jan Brett!!
Michelle/3/or - i use kevin henkes a lot when teaching text-self connections.
brad - I'm not saying Rylant is mundane, it's just like Carle's caterpillar--overdone. Breathe, Kim
Alta Rose / 1-2 - My son has discovered his Time Warp Trio books, Brad. He loves them!
Kim/K1/Ca - You had better hold me back. I 'm gonna kick him, I swear.....................MUNDANE?
Cynthia - I was thinking of using Kevin Henkes for author study... but a few years ago Gerald McDermott came to the school where I worked... he wrote Arrow to the Sun.. and now I can't think of his other titles! Darn!
Cynthia - Brad! yes! Very jealous! LOL! (not!)
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oh, I see how they'd be great for that, Michelle.
Kim/K1/Ca - o v e r d o n e ?? (I am going to have to hurt him)_
Kim/K1/Ca - I thought you bought it?
brad - That's so interesting, Michelle. I was thinking of using HEnkes this year fort the exact same strategy
Cynthia - Michelle, right! that's what I was thinking about henkes.. plus those books are easy to find.
Cynthia - HEY! I'm Californian!! Watch it!!!!!!!
Michelle/3/or - oh, cynthia, I'm so sorry..
brad - I should be Californian?? what?? Sorry, I was preoccupied.
Sadie T - Cynthia, I'm in California too.
Kim/K1/Ca - The most prolific and gifted children's author of all time..................and he calls her "mundane" and "overdone?"
Michelle/3/or - brad...don't let yourself be insulted like that
Sadie T - Michelle! Stop that!!
Cynthia - Hmmm.. I wonder who's selling tickets for this fight that's brewing between Kim and Brad???? If no one else is, I'm gonna sell 'em so I can go out and buy more BOOKS! yessssssss!!
Michelle/3/or - hehe.
diane - kim, are you going to require medical attention?
Cynthia - Anyone wanna help me sell ticket to the fights?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I'm in!
Sadie T - Sure Cyn
Kim/K1/Ca - It is a good thing you are all holding me back.
Michelle/3/or - I was at an interview the other day, and the majority of the people in the room were California immigrants
brad - Oh, Kim, get over it, you silly ninny. You and I both know she's the greatest, but she's mentioned in every @#$% book--MOT STW RWM WW WHAT you know by heart. It's like saying the I like the Beatles
Kim/K1/Ca - UN believeable...........and he calls himself a teacher.
Cynthia - good, Sadie.. How many books do YOU want to buy??? That will help us determine our selling price for the tickets! Alta, what's your thought on this???
Kim/K1/Ca - Of course you like the BEatles. Lennon and McCartney are geniuses.
brad - Am I speaking to a goldarn Elvis girl?????
Alta Rose / 1-2 - How many tickets do you have, Cynthia?
Cynthia - Hey, Brad... Kim is really fuming... Hey Kim.. Brad is really picking on you !! You can't let that happen!! (See? Gotta keep them feuding or else it's bye bye new books!)
diane - ahhh...the beatles...my nieces are obsessed...better than brittany spears....i'm so proud
Cynthia - Alta, the good thing is I can print up as many as we need!! How many do you think we should sell???
Alta Rose / 1-2 - (Good thinking, Cynthia!) whisper.
brad - Rip on Rylant all ya' want, but the BEATLES??
Kim/K1/Ca - Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Unmatchable................juust like Rylant. There is a REASON she is mentioned in all the trinity books. Sheesh.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oh, it's getting better!
Cynthia - Kim, don't look now, but Brad pulled your hair when you weren't looking!!! Hey Brad, Kim stuck her tongue out at you!!
diane - okay, you guys, i have to go....planning my ketchup activities
Sadie T - ROFLOL
brad - okay, I'm calming down now. Thought I was speaking to some frickin-frackin Elvis lover
Michelle/3/or - *innocent bystander*
Kim/K1/Ca - BRAD you should just be ashamed for having hit those keystrokes. You have blasphemed and must be punished.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Good night, diane!
Sadie T - Diane, don't forget the fries
Cynthia - (Pssst!! Alta!! Sadie!! keep them going! Rile them up!! We can buy ALLLL kinds of good books if they put on a good show!)
diane - lol, sadie
Michelle/3/or - bye, diane!
Cynthia - G'night Diane! Pleasure meeting you!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - You're doing a fine job, cynthia!
diane - night all
brad - I'm calling on Jan, I'm POSITIVE she has research that the Beatles changed the force of music
Cynthia - Brad! Nooo.. don't calm down!! Kim just whispered to me that she LOVES Elvis!!!
Cynthia - (Whew! this is sure tiring! I wonder if this is how ... what's that guy with the big hair.. con artist... fight promoter's name? got started???)
brad - Seriously, Michelle, did you say who your co-teacher is?
Kim/K1/Ca - I.............do ..............not...........love..............Elvis. I .............REVERE Cynthia Rylant. Brad is a blasphemer. We should cut off his pinkie or something.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I don't know, brad. David Cassidy had a bigger fan club!
Michelle/3/or - oh....so all you WYKBH fans....are you becoming (or already have been) writers? I can't get myself started...it's like trying to start an excercise program
Cynthia - Hmmm... ok... guess we're back to serious again.. (darn! thought I had a chance at some new literature)
brad - But without my pinkie, what would I extend as I eat my HO HO?
Michelle/3/or - no, i didn't. I was looking for feedback from those who weren't obsessed w/Rylant
Cynthia - I LOVE TO write!! have always loved to write... can't you tell by how much I TALK, here??? LOL!!
brad - I have to decide to, Michelle. (And by the way, I used to write. Still want to someday)
Michelle/3/or - I loved to write when I was in elementary school, but it changed as i got older.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Me too, Michelle
brad - What changed?
Michelle/3/or - I got too self-concious of my writing
Cynthia - I guess the truth of the matter is... I USED to write more.. and used to attend writing retreats... but, lately.. not so much....
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I'm not sure. When I was a kid I thought I'd be a writer when I grew up. I just don't have the talent.
Michelle/3/or - when i was in 4th grade, I wanted to be either a teacher or a children's author
brad - And you don't think Rylant gets self-conscious?? You don't think Rylant occasionally produces @#$%?? (Here goes Kim again)
Cynthia - I still love analyzing writing, looking for the play with words, language... and looking to see how writers use metaphor! Ohhh I love the use of metaphors... but I can't use them effectively...
brad - LOL, Cynthia's definitely one of us with the metaphor thing
Cynthia - Michelle! You won! You're a teacher!
Michelle/3/or - well.....I don't think I was really taught the right way...
Kim/K1/Ca - You will love Wondrous Words, Cynthia. She talks all about craft..............what writers do. (steely stare at brad)
Cynthia - Rylant.. hmm.. that name sounds familiar... Oh! yes!! That's ME!!!!!!!!! Nooo, brad! I don't get self conscious!!! I don't produce $#@#%%%
Kim/K1/Ca - Actually, Brad.....she publishes her first drafts.
Cynthia - Kim, yes!! But I'm trying to read 4 books at once!
Michelle/3/or - and Cynthia Rylant. I swear, as much as she touts Rylant's work, she should get some $ from the sale of her books
Cynthia - I publish my FIRST drafts! yep!! Yes I do!! Indeed I do!!
brad - If she writes like I did, she probably does publish first drafts
Kim/K1/Ca - You have to teach kids to READ like writers..............it all comes together. If they study craft. (putting poison in brad's drink)
Sadie T - Kim, what do you mean that she publishes her first drafts? That her published works are first drafts, or that the first drafts are also published?...
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's the same with me, Michelle. And it's the same with research. I still remember the school librarian tearing up my "research" because I was copying from the book. But nobody had shown me the proper way to research.
Cynthia - brad, so how do you write? I'm curious about what YOUR first drafts would look like....
Kim/K1/Ca - She doesn't really use a process. She just ....... writes. Then she publishes.
brad - How do you teach writing Cynthia? (switching my glass with Kim's)
Michelle/3/or - when I was a kid, i generally thought my 1st drafts were good enough, so I would just write them really sloppy (for the "sloppy copy") and then rewrite them neatly for the final draft.
Cynthia - (psst.... psssst! hey kimmie! If you're going to pick a fight with brad, do me a big fave and let me know ahead of time! I really need to sell all the tickets I printed up or I'll have to declare bankruptcy!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
Kim/K1/Ca - Don't you all think it would be a real SHAME if Brad had an ACCIDENT this week? (Where are brake lines, exactly?)
brad - I give BIRTH to each and every sentence. It must be perfect before I lay it down. But that's my insecurity. I've learned to overcome this as I get older. But it used to simultaneously @#$% off/please my high school English teacher when she found out I turn in first drafts and still made A's
Cynthia - Well, funny you should ask, brad. (Pssst! Kim!! Switch glasses with Brad while I distract him!! Hurry, tho!)
Michelle/3/or - give birth????? brad.....
Michelle/3/or - never mind
Kim/K1/Ca - (wink, wink, Cyn...........thanks)
Sadie T - Michelle, that is a problem with rough drafts - if the writer knew it wasn't good enough as they wrote it, they wouldn't have written it that way in the first place
brad - I wrench and agonize over each word, Michelle
Michelle/3/or - my question exactly, sadie.
Cynthia - (*wink* no prob, Kim!)
brad - Sadie, I hated teachers who wanted evidence (outlines, webs) of each stage of the process because I never wrote that way
Cynthia - Men just ache that they can't give birth! LOL
Kim/K1/Ca - Kinda like "showing your work" in math.................
Michelle/3/or - yeah, it's like working backwords
Michelle/3/or - backwards
brad - Please, cynthia. I have a story about that
Kim/K1/Ca - Oh, do tell.......................
Michelle/3/or - i remember making my outlines and notecards after writing my papers
Sadie T - "backwords" fits, Michelle
Cynthia - *listening to brad with baited breath*
Sadie T - Me too, Michelle. It should be the final product that counts... everything else is to help get there, and if it isn't being used that way, it's not workign
Michelle/3/or - looking cynically at brad
Cynthia - Please, brad, I'd be honored to hear your story.....
Kim/K1/Ca - BRAD.......you butt head. TELL!
Cynthia - KIM!!!!! Yikes!! what violence!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - We're waiting, brad........
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah I know. but he riles me up.
brad - When I was probably seven or eight years old, I was deciding whether it was better to be a boy or girl (like I had a choice). Anyway, I made two columns. On the one side, I put boy and then listed "have to go to war." On the other side, I put girl. listed "giving birth and having periods." I crossed out the girl column and circled boy like that (snap) The fact we want to give birth is a fallacy, a falsehood. It's like saying Cynthia Rylant is underdone
Sadie T - Brad, we're waiting........
Cynthia - Hey Michelle, give me a hint... who's side should I be on.. brad's or kim's????
Cynthia - Brad must be furiously typing.. there.. that's it!
Cynthia - OH BRAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sadie T - Girls can go to war.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - lol!
Michelle/3/or - better not to choose sides...although brad does carry the Ho Ho's
Cynthia - (hate to admit that I'm laughing hysterically at brad's story!)
Kim/K1/Ca - WAIT a minute.......................he's dissing her again, isn't he?
Michelle/3/or - you know what, i did a similar thing when i was about 7
Cynthia - Michelle, then Brad it is!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!! HO HO HO HOHOHOHO!!
Michelle/3/or - I thought "men have to work, but women have to have babies..."
Michelle/3/or - couldn't decide which was worse...little did i know
brad - OH, Michelle, my mom was a working mom (remember the whole Ruby Payne discussion?) so I thought
Kim/K1/Ca - don't encourage him...............
brad - everyone worked
Michelle/3/or - my mom was too! she was a single mom! but, it was still the exception, not the rule
Cynthia - Kim, what do you bring to the table?? So far, brad has the ho ho's.....
brad - also remember, I'm younger
Cynthia - So how long have all of you been teaching?
Kim/K1/Ca - Yes, but I am older and have more insurance.
Michelle/3/or - are you?
brad - or not?? I may not be younger than you Michelle. We had that discussion before you were here
brad - TOWANDA YO' @#$% SELF
Alta Rose / 1-2 - This will be my 15th year.
Michelle/3/or - so...how old are you, brad?
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Had to think for a minute.
Cynthia - huh?? towanda????
Sadie T - My 3rd year
brad - Sadie, girls CAN go to war but they don't HAVE TO
brad - Oh, Sadie might be younger than Me??
Cynthia - I've been at it 20 years... I stopped counting after a while...
Sadie T - True Brad, but you can't say that about guys giving birth
Kim/K1/Ca - Going into my eighth year..................
Sadie T - I might Brad, it depends on how old you are
Cynthia - brad is being coy... keeping his age a secret...
Michelle/3/or - this is my 2nd career...I'm going into my 3rd yr in the classroom
brad - speaking of mae, she was curiously absent tonite
Cynthia - and keeping his number of teaching years a secret
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Are we telling?
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad...........were you Towonda the Vigilent?
brad - <------coy boy
Cynthia - and brad is noticably changing the topic....
Michelle/3/or - is towonda still around?
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad is around 30.
Michelle/3/or - I am over 30
Cynthia - noticeably?? hmmmm wonder what the correct spelling is...
Sadie T - I am under 30
Cynthia - I know who towanda is, and I ain't tellin'!!!!!!!!!!!!
brad - Everyone knows this upcoming year will be my second
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I thought it was supposed to be WOMEN who didn't want to tell...
Kim/K1/Ca - Brad shocked us all by revealing how long he has been teaching awhile back.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I AM under 40.
Cynthia - brad, second decade or second month?
Kim/K1/Ca - CYNTHIA! She IS you!
Sadie T - LOL Cynthia
Cynthia - Nah!!!!!!!!! Not towanda!! I'm Cynthia rylant, remember??? LOL!!!
Kim/K1/Ca - I am over 30 too.
brad - I am towanda
Michelle/3/or - i think cynthia is towonda
Kim/K1/Ca - I have a 20 year old son...........so ...................
brad - is towanda what i think it is
Sadie T - Brad, that depends...
Cynthia - Brad, shall we assume you are over 10 years old?? I willl. Your spelling is better than the ave. 10 year old....
brad - I am over 10
Cynthia - Good! I was right on that one...
Alta Rose / 1-2 - brb
brad - I am also over 40
Sadie T - I'm guessing Brad's about 17....
Michelle/3/or - maybe over 20? can't be too sure about htat
Cynthia - Brad... .are you over 2x10???
Kim/K1/Ca - You are not...............?
Cynthia - Brad, are you over 5x10????
brad - What's with all the multiplication problems?
Cynthia - I have a really hard time judging ages in chatrooms!
Sadie T - Notice Brad isn't using the word "years" here. He could be saying he's over 40 MONTHS.
Michelle/3/or - nah....he first assumed he was the youngest here.
Cynthia - Sadie, I noticed that, too...
Cynthia - Brad is a KID!!!!!!!!!!
brad - I'm like the Doogie Howser of Education. I'm about 21
Cynthia - Brad is a baby!!!!!!!!!!!
Cynthia - (compared to me, almost anyone's a baby! LOL)
Michelle/3/or - and how old is your son?
Kim/K1/Ca - Bradley..come clean.
Sadie T - Now we have no idea whether or not to believe him.
brad - actually, I'm Kim's 20 year old son
Kim/K1/Ca - He has a 10 year old ...................
Michelle/3/or - let's see....he's mentioned 20's and 40's....so it must be 30's?
Cynthia - Well, this is a fine twist! usually it's the men who keep needling the women for not confessing their ages!
brad - I am over 40
Sadie T - Over forty WHAT?
Cynthia - Ok.. now..let's do some math, since brad didin't do the multiplication problems.....
Kim/K1/Ca - Okay. I will tell you all the truth. I am 43. I went back to school at 29 years old.
Sadie T - Over 40 inches tall??
brad - Inches tall (giggle)
brad - You're good Sadie. Do you read a lot of mysteries??
Sadie T - Ah-HA!!!!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I am 39. See Brad, it doesn't hurt.
Cynthia - 10-y.o son... he could be 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31....
Michelle/3/or - I went back to school at age 28, i think
Sadie T - Brad is 31.
brad - LOL, then really I'm over 70
brad - Inches tall (giggle)
Cynthia - Ok... fact is.. it just doesn't matter.... new topic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michelle/3/or - how do you know, sadie?
Cynthia - (brad will WANT to tell us if we stop asking!)
brad - a little of that reverse psychology, Cynthia??
Cynthia - So, for starters I should start with teaching making connections ... text to self....
brad - LOL
Cynthia - right?
Michelle/3/or - and then is QUESTIONING
Cynthia - lol, brad!
Sadie T - Right, Cynthia, so if Brad reads a book about a 28-year-old and makes a connection to himself, then that means....
Kim/K1/Ca - Yeah, and how about that schema?
brad - I'm starting with a unit in Sept. on metacognition/knowing ourselves as readers/setting goals for the year before I launch into schema, Cynthia
Cynthia - Michelle, after t to self, THEN questioning?
Cynthia - LOL@Sadie!! good one!
Michelle/3/or - nah....sorry.
brad - Kind've like Miller does at the beginning of her book or Taberski does with Solid Ground. I'm in second next year
Cynthia - michelle.. sorry?? to what?? to whom??
Michelle/3/or - when your students ask how old you are, what do you say?
Kim/K1/Ca - Well............I tell them I am 76.
Michelle/3/or - after text-self, it's not questioning.
brad - My students say, "That's how old my mom is."
Kim/K1/Ca - They always believe me.
Michelle/3/or - I say 110. when they call me on it, i say "you're right, I'm 18"
brad - LOL Kim
Cynthia - I was at a workshop for who knows what.. and I came across my notes where the speaker said, "Kiss your brain!"... I'm going to use that with the kids when they do something they should be proud of!
brad - It's that crocodile skin
Cynthia - Kim!! ME TOO!! I say 76 exactly! makes me laugh!
Kim/K1/Ca - I love that one, Cyn......really.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - I let them guess, for a laugh, and then I tell them. To me it's just a number.
Michelle/3/or - If i do tell them the truth...there's always those who say "You're older than my mom!!" with a look like i will keel over any second
brad - Cynthia, we do a lot of "Raise the Roof" and "Beatnik Claps"
Cynthia - Alta.. funny, I used to say that.. for the longest time.. and one day, it just was harder to admit to! LOL!
Alta Rose / 1-2 - That's OK, Michelle. At least it's not "you're older than my grandma!"
Cynthia - brad, cool! I'm gonna do that, too! I've been back to work already. This was our third week back.
Kim/K1/Ca - I always sing, "I like it , I love it, I want some more of it.........."
brad - You're kidding, Cyn?? Where??
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Not that any of mine have said that to me...
Michelle/3/or - sometimes a make a math riddle out of my age
Cynthia - KIM!! I like that, too!!!!! "I like it , I love it, I want some more of it.........."
Cynthia - Los angeles, Brad
brad - this is gonna sound odd--do you have ac
Kim/K1/Ca - "I try so hard..(screeching) I can't rise above it!"
Sadie T - Michelle, so if your riddle was something like "Take Brad's age and add 50 yeards, then divide by..." Hey Brad, help me out here.
Michelle/3/or - we do.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Are you year-round, cynthia?
Kim/K1/Ca - L.A. ?? You are kidding me..................
Cynthia - YES!!!!!!! MUST HAVE AC!!! LOL!! we've been doing year round for 20 years! can't believe it's been so long
Cynthia - Lol@Sadie! You're too much! You seem to be obsessed!
Michelle/3/or - we had year-round for a while...that's why we have ac.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - AC?
Sadie T - (explaining for the Canadian) AIR CONDITIONING
Cynthia - Kim, why would i be kidding you? Well, I MIGHT be, but no.. no reason to kid! LOL
Kim/K1/Ca - yes, Sadie is obsessed. She stalks Brad. They are making a Lifetime movie about it.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Oh! LOL!
brad - My district is thinking of going to an early August start next year for all schools (right now, some traditional, like mine; some year-round) and was just wondering what it was like in the nineties sweating in early August with NO AIR. I'm all for year-round, but please, put in AIR
Michelle/3/or - no one would kid about being in LA
Kim/K1/Ca - I have been in year round all my career until this year. I teach in the Antelope Valley..............you know it?
Cynthia - Ohhh! Back to TWOZ syndrome... AC=AIR Conditioning...
Sadie T - Kim, at least I'm not the one that was threatening to cut his breaks and poison his drink.
Sadie T - His BRAKES
Cynthia - No,brad! you NEED air conditioners!!
brad - I want Lynda Carter or Cheryl Ladd to play Sadie. They might have to get Treat Williams for me
Kim/K1/Ca - Trying to deflect attention away from you, Sadie.
Cynthia - Michelle!!!!!! And what's wrong with L.A???????? Well, yeah, there's that! and .. yeah, that, too!! But.. ok. that too! BUT.. besides all that long list!!!????
Michelle/3/or - so kim is an enabler?
Kim/K1/Ca - But Treat Williams is at least 50 yrs old, Brad.
Sadie T - Michelle has this thing against California.
Cynthia - Hmmmm... for me.. it would be Roseanne... *sigh*
Michelle/3/or - cynthia...nothing...kim thinks I'm anti-california, so i just play it up.
Cynthia - YUCK! LOL!!
brad - And Sally Field played Tom Hanks MOTHER in Forest Gump?? So what?
Kim/K1/Ca - LOL, Michelle............
Cynthia - Michelle! are YOU the one who wrote up those "Californication" bumper stickers????
Kim/K1/Ca - Seriously, Cynthia.I am just north of you.
brad - Kim is the one trying to stop Sadie from obsessing, obviously to be played by Joanna Kerns or Nancy Mckeon
Michelle/3/or - never heard of them, but i'm sure it was an oregonian
Cynthia - Or.. Michelle, did you write, :We Welcome Californians, Now that you've visited, go home!!" Or something like that??
brad - Cynthia, "Californication" was an album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (showing age?)
Michelle/3/or - that's definitely an Oregon saying, cynthia
Michelle/3/or - Californians come to visit...but they don't leave!
Kim/K1/Ca - For me.....the actress would probably be...the one who plays on E.R. .............
Cynthia - Hey, look! I've got you all sized up, already: Sadie wants to know brad's age... Kim LOVES Cynthia rylant.... Michelle is not too fond of California.... um.. who am I missing here....
brad - Kerry Weaver??
Michelle/3/or - which one, kim?
Kim/K1/Ca - yeah..kerry weaver
Cynthia - brad is a HOHO's fanatic....
Sadie T - Alta Rose is in Canada so she doesn't know about air conditioning
brad - Canada IS air conditioning
Cynthia - Sadie! Psst!! Look! Brad gave a hint about his age!! Red Hot Chili Peppers!
Kim/K1/Ca - Are you with LAUSD, Cynthia?
Michelle/3/or - Cynthia, Kim wrote bio's on all us regulars. it's on the board if you feel like a laugh.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - Lol, Sadie!
Michelle/3/or - Chili Peppers were popular when i was in college (the first time)
brad - KIm is back with the acronyms (Nod your head)
Cynthia - Ooh! I missed Alta Rose... Ok.. let's see now... Alta Rose... um.... is a sweetie and just tries to stay out of trouble!!!!! LOL!!!

Sadie T - See, even MICHELLE knows that!
brad - In Celsius, It just doesn't sound hot, does it?
Kim/K1/Ca - Not too tough, Brad...............L.A. = Los Angeles. USD = Unified School District. Only the largest school district in the country. Sheesh.
Michelle/3/or - of course, I have to stay on top of things down there
Cynthia - no.. not lausd... What city are you in, Kim?

Cynthia - Just teasing you, michelle! Frankly I have no beef with anyone from any other state!
Kim/K1/Ca - That's it..............the lovely Mojave Desert. Home of the recent kidnapping.
Alta Rose / 1-2 - It's funny because my daughter has a B. Friend who we just adore, and her parents think my daughter is nice. My daughter insists that neither sets of parents "really know" the truth!
