Kim/1/Ca - So we have survived our first month? Are things settling down for everyone?
Sharon - judy... did you read about the rita golden gelman talk my kids had? they're such a great group... taking to MOT like a duck to water
Kim/1/Ca - You can borrow mine, Marcia.........just stop on by.............
judy3ca - Kim, my kids are great in the morning, but annoying in the afternoon, LOL. We'll work on it.
Sharon - marcia... my putter books are packed in the lost box I couldn't do it either yet
Marcia1st/GA - I will. TAking the next plane, Kim. LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah..........(sigh)..........mine too.
naneb - judy, that is my class too, I have the 6th graders first period and then again in the afternoon, they are 2 different classes
Kim/1/Ca - Okay, I have a good story for ya..........
judy3ca - Sharon, yes!! Hooray for you and your kids--I meant to write, but I'm braindead. Your kids are amazing because they have an amazing teacher.
Marcia1st/GA - I think I am going to do the Williams' Doll and Oliver Button is a Sissy books this week. Plus, I am going to focus on some social studies read alouds
Sharon - hi michelle and cavey
Michelle - wow...bright color...but I figured I'd be the only one to have it
cavey - Hi Guys!!
judy3ca - Hi Michelle!!
Kim/1/Ca - ....and I will tell just as soon as I hug cavey and Michelle..........
Michelle - oh, kim...i want to hear a good story. hi everyone!
naneb - my 8th graders and I are focusing on theme
Anne - Good night , talk to you next week.
judy3ca - Hi cavey!!!!
cavey - Let's hear it Kim!
Sharon - awww, thanks judy... i'm loving the strategy work... it's amazing to listen to these early firsties talk so knowingly about books this early
Kim/1/Ca - I revisited the Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree, and then linked it to A Busy Year..........I am setting them up for a little independent seasons project so I can do a small group............
cavey - Hi Jan- You're looking "plum" dandy tonight
Sharon - hi jan! interesting discussion on the ssr on the chatboard
Michelle - Hi, Jan!
judy3ca - Sharon, yes, sometimes that's the best part--just listening to them. I'm very proud of how my kids are learning to "notice."
Jan - You noticed!
Marcia1st/GA - My children really did well with Hazel's Amazing Mother. I guess I need to stick to the Debbie miller book suggestions for now.
Kim/1/Ca - I have about 7 ELL kids in my class. They wanted clarification on the word "manure."
Sharon - time for a hands-on activity, kim?
Michelle - lol, sharon
Jan - Michelle, how did you presentation go?
judy3ca - ROFL, Kim! Did you bring some in for realia?
naneb - How about a diorama?
Michelle - Great, Jan! I was really surprised!
cavey - Kim- they'
Marcia1st/GA - Remember someone posted onour list about the kids not having any schema for manure?
Kim/1/Ca - (((Jan))) ..........so.........(very funny Sharon) I say something about it being "cow excrement," really appropriate for ELL kids, ha ha.........
naneb - Did you see the message on the main board about different things to do instead of book reports?
cavey - Kim, that's"cow pies" in the South
Jan - Yes, Kim, this could be quite a lesson! Did you do a task analysis!
judy3ca - Oh, please--doesn't everyone have schema for manure?
Marcia1st/GA - Cow pies or cow patties
Michelle - I tell them like it is....it's poop, I say. I had the same question in 1st grade.
Kim/1/Ca - So, Luis shouts out, "Oh! POOP!" and I say, well, yeah........and keep going......but they are still confused. So I open the book to show the little mice putting the manure around the tree, so it can grow, etc etc etc.
Marcia1st/GA - Do you all remember these chats are archived?
judy3ca - Michelle, we talked about poop today too--in science, about how seeds travel.
Kim/1/Ca - They Cheyenne LIGHTS up and she, who NEVER talks, says excitedly, "YEAH! My dad puts horsesh*t all around our trees!"
Jan - Wow!, Kim, your curriculum is so stimulating!
Sharon - no way, kim!!!!!
cavey - No poop talk in my room this week
judy3ca - ROFLOL
Marcia1st/GA - Kim, gotta love it!
Michelle - we did Writers Workshop outside today, so we could gather "seed ideas". One of my kids wrote all about DIRT
naneb - I know if we had poop talk in my room it would not be quite so innocent!!
Kim/1/Ca - .........and she doesn't REALIZE at first what she said. The kids are just doing the "ooooooooh" thing and I can barely contain myself. Poor Cheyenne. When she realized, she was horrified. But it was funny.
Marcia1st/GA - Michelle, waht grade do you teach? I need some guidance for WW. Lots of help needed>
Kim/1/Ca - Well, yes Marcia, they are archived. BUT you see,,,, Cheyenne made a good TEXT to SELF connection.
Michelle - I teach 3rd grade, marcia. I did 1st grade 2 yrs ago.
Marcia1st/GA - Yes, how appropriate Kim. I am glad the discussion came back around.
Sharon - you should write her comment neatly on a chart and post it in the room for everyone to be reminded, kim!
Marcia1st/GA - Michelle, did you teach WW in first?
Kim/1/Ca - ROFL, Sharon.........
judy3ca - I love WW, but I'd like to strangle whoever taught my kids to write acrostic poems--I finally outlawed them.
Jan - Kim, at least, the kids built some useful schema.
Michelle - Yes, but at the beginning of the year not so much. It was mostly "journal writing"
Michelle - until about January.
Kim/1/Ca - Yes.......I have been using the term "schema" lately. ..... setting them up for MOT
cavey - Judy, mine are into alphabet stories for every topic, don't feel bad
Kim/1/Ca - ROFLMAO Judy.......! I know what you mean, jelly bean.
Marcia1st/GA - Michelle, I need a plan. I am reading Teaching teh Youngest Writer and there's a multitude of great ideas, but I can't organize it to feel like I am teaching them to craft their writing.
judy3ca - cavey, thanks, now I feel better, LOL
cavey - Yeah Judy and mine are supposed to be gifted
Kim/1/Ca - Mine write about how much they LOVE everybody.
Michelle - that's 1st grade, kim. I had to finally outlaw that by November.
judy3ca - eeeew, Kim, yuck! I could never go back to the littlest ones if that's what they write about!
Marcia1st/GA - Michelle, mine are also doing mostly personal narratives which I think is okay. And, yes some write every day how much they love Mrs. McComas!
Kim/1/Ca - Except for Christopher, my little angel who barely speaks English. He wants to write ALL the time. He really took to the story "I went Walking." Now he writes about all the "walking" trips with his dad. MILES away these trips are..........
Marcia1st/GA - oops, sorry that was Kim, not michelle
Michelle - Marcia, I'm no expert at teaching WW. I use a bunch of books to help myself, and I new even less 2 years ago.
Sharon - well kim... at least they're not writing that they "lick" everybody like my bunch did last year... i lick football, i lick my friends... what is it about first graders and the lick/like confusion??
Kim/1/Ca - Thank's for the tip, Michelle.........I figured it would ride its course.
cavey - Sharon lol
Kim/1/Ca - LOLOL Sharon........OMG
Marcia1st/GA - Sharon, do you get sol for saw? or sal for saw?
judy3ca - One of my kids wrote a darling Rylant takeoff called When I Was Young in San Francisco (he confided in me that he'd been very young, three).
Sharon - sol... yes... lots!
Jan - Sharon, not only first graders "lick" but third graders!
Sharon - judy... i love that!
Kim/1/Ca - I get "ax" a lot........ yesterday I lost it. One of my kids says "I axed her............" and I said, deadpan "was she bloody?"
judy3ca - Mine don't lick, but they wan't.
Michelle - yes, some third graders still lick me and everyone else.
Marcia1st/GA - One of mine did a darling little book called Living or Nonliving. Each page has an example of something living or nonlving. Last page says ,"Well, what are you?" So cute.
Jan - Judy, I'd love to see that!
Kim/1/Ca - I love it, Marcia?
judy3ca - Marcia, that's too cute!
Kim/1/Ca - I mean, I love it, Marcia!
cavey - Kim you're so bad!
Kim/1/Ca - I know, Cavey. Very culturally insensitive of me...................
Marcia1st/GA - yeah, one success story. The kids really like WW, -very motivated about it
judy3ca - True Living/Nonliving story. Our new third grade science book opens with this. I went into another teacher's room yesterday and she had it as a Venn diagram. Go figure!
Sharon - a venn???
Kim/1/Ca - NO WAY Judy!!!! YOU are messing with us.................
cavey - Mine love WW too, even say its "fun"
Michelle - things go into both categories?
judy3ca - Sharon, right! But I didn't say a word--not one word!
Marcia1st/GA - Hey, Judy, did a highly successful hands on Venn of an apple and a lemon. Think I already told you that too. Uh-oh, I keep repeating myself.
Kim/1/Ca - Tell us Marcia!
Jan - Judy, LOL. What was in the middle of the Venn
Michelle - my kids ask if they can take their books or their writing to lunch with them.
judy3ca - Marcia, that's very cool. I actually love Venns, but not for mutually exclusive items.
Marcia1st/GA - Like what, Judy?
naneb - you can do them though but not using a venn, just use two circles that do not touch
judy3ca - Jan, I wish I'd noticed--I was trying very hard not to stare (or give away my horror).
Sharon - oh, marcia... in our science studies, we've already observed/experimented with apples... we'll do the same with pumpkins and then a venn with them both... but what makes it a neat display is if your venn is an apple and pumpkin intersecting... really eye-catching
cavey - Okay, I'm here trying to think of famous people who could be living but not animated
Marcia1st/GA - Oh, I see, slow processing tonight
Kim/1/Ca - I know, teacher! I know! (Hand raised in the air)
cavey - Go Kim
Marcia1st/GA - Sharon, did you do this with the apple/pumpkin venn?
judy3ca - ROFL, cavey. Actually my kids had some trouble with the difference between living and real. Originally they put dinosaur and mermaid under nonliving.
Kim/1/Ca - Things that go in both categories........deep philosophical issues.................
Sharon - yes, marcia... really went well
cavey - I'm thinking Dan Rather
Kim/1/Ca - Like.........at what point does something pass from LIVING to NON LIVING? How long would it be in the overlapping area? Would you notice it?
cavey - or any Miss America contestant
Jan - LOL Cavey!
Michelle - coma?
naneb - how about petrified wood? when does it go from wood to rock?
Marcia1st/GA - sometimes I feel like I am nonliving. Maybe today around 1:30 in the afternoon
Kim/1/Ca - hmmmm.........maybe........Hi to Erin!
Erin - Hi all!! Just got home after work and a birthday party to a kitchen full of ants AAGGHH
naneb - Hi Erin
Marcia1st/GA - Nan, that is deep thinking...
naneb - from the bottom of my hole!!
Michelle - erin...I looked through that Words Their Way book, got totally overwhelmed with the initial assessment stuff, and decided to bag it until next year. Too much on my plate already this year.
Kim/1/Ca - That too, naneb........petrified wood and things not quite dead................
judy3ca - Erin, chatting is much more important than taking care of the ants.
Jan - Ah, Erin, Welcome to Ant Heaven!
Kim/1/Ca - Send the ants to day care, judy...............
Erin - Michelle, it takes awhile.
naneb - ((((((((((((Altarose))))))))))))))
cavey - Hi Alta!!
Sharon - hiya alta rose... and belated hi to erin
Alta rose - Hi everyone!
Michelle - I'm just going to continue with Month by Month Phonics this year.
Erin - Judy, I already killed them ants. I have to go look in a few minutes though for the renegades
Jan - I have HAD it with ants!
Erin - Michelle, I agree. You need a summer to look through the WTW book
Marcia1st/GA - Hi Alta Rose
Kim/1/Ca - My sister has a theory about ants. She figures that if you can just INJURE one........... it has to be bad enough to be noticed but not so bad as the ant can't make it back to headquarters..............
cavey - Erin at least the ants are quiet. Ever had crickets?
Erin - We have ants at home, all over our school. They are taking over our valley
judy3ca - cavey, you mean IN the house?
Erin - Oh cavey. I don't want to think about having crickets
Jan - Crickets are worse than kids!
Kim/1/Ca - then the injured ant communicates to the others, in ant speak, that "this is a BAD place. Don't go there."
judy3ca - Jan, LOLOL
Michelle - we have ants all over our school too. the mice stay in the front part of the building. I'm glad I'm in the back
cavey - Oh yes Judy- when you live in the woods, the creatures come in
naneb - what age of kids?
Marcia1st/GA - If you call a pest control, they can lay out some poison that the ants carry back to the nest and the queen eats it and they all end up dying
Sharon - OR all the little ant thugs come back to take revenge, kim
Erin - Kim, I had a frient tell me that. But how do you just "injure" an ant. They're so tiny
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Cavey...........we had one so long under the fridge we considered him a pet. Escaped from the tarantula's cage.
Jan - We have crickets in the garage, ants in the house. My dog barks at the crickets. It's wild!
Michelle - kim, your sister has tested this theory? it works better than killing all visible ants?
judy3ca - We hear the crickets every night--but they must be the polite strain, waiting to be invited in.
Kim/1/Ca - That's the problem, Jan. You have to be really dexterious, and very patient.
Jan - Marcia, but within 3 weeks, there is a new colony!
cavey - Okay - we've gone from poop to bugs
Kim/1/Ca - Well, she would LIKE to test this theory. But........ she has very long fingers and no nails (P.E. teacher).
Sharon - cavey... logical sequence
Erin - Glad I could help change the topic LOL
Alta rose - Oh, I'm sorry I missed the poop discussion!
judy3ca - Sharon, science person, I'm thrilled to announce that our caterpillars are now pupa--very exciting!
Marcia1st/GA - I don't know, Jan. It worked at my house. That little stuff just laid there in my window sill for a while.
Sharon - yay, judy! what type?
cavey - brb need more wine for this chat, and I'm having to drink for Brad
Kim/1/Ca - Well, yes..............if you listen carefully, you can hear them singing that song from the Wizard of Oz.......you know, the witch's minions..............HO EE OO, HEE YO HO............
Michelle - oh...i was thinking only a slight squirt of the Raid might "injure" an ant long enough to go back....I can't squish living things
judy3ca - There are types? Um, little ones....
Jan - Alta, it's archived for history!
Erin - I just sprinkle Comet along the window sills. Ants don't like the powdery feel.
Sharon - lol! i meant what type butterflies are you expecting?
Kim/1/Ca - I have also tried reasoning with them in my best teacher voice.
Alta rose - That's right, Jan. I forgot!
judy3ca - Sharon, LOL, I have no clue. The science aide ordered the caterpillars for us and she said she's never had them live before. We're probably a lot more excited than the kids.
Sharon - probably painted lady
cavey - I'm back- did I miss anything about mucos?
judy3ca - Sharon, she came in today and put them in a butterfly net.
Kim/1/Ca - Did you get them from Insect Lore? 1-800-LIVE BUG? If so, they are Painted Lady Butterflied.
Kim/1/Ca - Did you get them from Insect Lore? 1-800-LIVE BUG? If so, they are Painted Lady Butterflies.
Erin - no cavey just the vomit stories
Michelle - I have a funny story about painted lady butterflies...
Kim/1/Ca - No, Cavey.........Brad isn't here yet.
Marcia1st/GA - Sharon, do you think it's too late for me to order butterflies, or larvae or whatever you order?
judy3ca - I don't know, LOL, this is the one thing I let someone else do for me!
Jan - Cavey, you are really funny tonight. Perhaps you should only drink for YOURSELF!
naneb - we got ours from my friends garden
Kim/1/Ca - Do you have the rubber stamps for the butterfly journals?
Sharon - judy... when they emerge, watch the kids... they will probably think they're bleeding and freak!
Sharon - i'm waiting till spring, marcia
cavey - It's okay Jan, I'm a professional
judy3ca - Oh, joy, Sharon--I've never done this before.
naneb - a professional drinker?
Erin - Cavey, is that a professional teacher or a professional drinker LOL
Michelle - when I taught 1st, we ordered butterflies. I had 5 in my room. Well, when they were in their chrysallis, the ink started dripping...red ink...well, i didn't know what it was and we all (kids and I) were very upset that the butterflies were bleeding. It was quite traumatic until I finally learned the truth.
Erin - Nan, great minds....
cavey - I used to just get tent caterpillars out of the trees to hatch
Jan - PROFESSIONAL WHAT?
Sharon - when their wings are wet you get some of the color... like ink
Kim/1/Ca - LOL, Michelle......been there...........
cavey - I am multi-talented
Alta rose - Lol, Michelle!!1
Sharon - lol, michelle!
Sharon - i love tent caterpillars, cavey!
judy3ca - Seriously, Sharon and Michelle, thanks for warning me. My nature-study schema is severly impaired.
Sharon - what exactly do they change to though?
Erin - Michelle LOL, I "babysat" another teacher's tarantula one summer and it suddenly stopped moving. I even risked poking it and ...nothing. I thought "Great I've killed it" Realize a few days later it was just molting
cavey - Moths - the day after the kids go home for the summer
Kim/1/Ca - They change into campers............
cavey - and you have to feed them so much every day
Sharon - hey... the next time i fall down in my bed exhausted, i'm gonna try that line with my husband... don't touch me, i'm molting!
naneb - LOL!! My kindof answer! Kim
Marcia1st/GA - Tent campers! Very cute, Kim
cavey - Sharon lol
Michelle - when the butterflies finally all emerged and were ready to be let go, I had a friend who taught 4th grade at my school, and who's son was in my room, be a "parent volunteer" during her prep time and take the kids outside to let them go. I was afraid of touching them and hurting them.
Erin - LOl sharon
Sharon - michelle, traumatic is when you've nurtured and cared for them and go to release all the beautiful butterflies with the kids... and the birds swoop in trying to catch them!
Erin - brb checking on those d..n ant
Kim/1/Ca - oh geez, Sharon........................
Jan - Michelle, you let the KIDS go?
judy3ca - Oh, no, Sharon!
cavey - Jan - can't wait to hear the metamorphasis on differentiation - how's that for a segway
judy3ca - ouch, cavey
Jan - Cavey, put that drink down!!
naneb - segway? isn't that in Alaska??
cavey - Hey Brad and Sadie aren't here, somebody's gotta do it
Kim/1/Ca - Today we made a class book.......spur of the moment. I read them RAIN and they took to it...........
judy3ca - Wasn't it once spelled segue?
Jan - Where are Brad and Sadie anyway. Brad had a bad week according to the board.
Sharon - peter spier?
naneb - LOL!!
Michelle - uggh....just had a door-to-door salesman.
judy3ca - Well, I had a bad week, too!
cavey - You know I'm not a speller, I need Grace in a big way
Alta rose - When my son's teacher brought in butterflies, they were each assigned one to take care of. His didn't make it.
Kim/1/Ca - I've done the caterpillars..........truly wonderful are the silkworms. But I must admit we were TOO successful one year. It was all I could do to collect enough mulberry leaves.
judy3ca - cavey, oops, I wasn't criticizing your spelling, just joking.
naneb - they still have door to door salesman, I thought it was all telemarketing now!1
cavey - It's okay Judy - I aren't offended
judy3ca - LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Here I am, driving around town, surreptitiously snagging mulberry leaves from residential trees, school parking lots...................
Michelle - he was selling music CD's for some missionary thing
naneb - Well, I think I get the prize for BAD Weeks!!
cavey - spill it Naneb
Michelle - then when I mentioned buying books, and that i teach, he started asking school-related questions. double-ugh.
naneb - Tropical Storm Isidore!!
Kim/1/Ca - Share about your week.............
judy3ca - Wait, but my bad part wasn't my kids, it was adults (um, remember the woman with the Venn diagram?).
cavey - Hey diane - another lowercase gal
Kim/1/Ca - OH YES, naneb! How is THAT?
Marcia1st/GA - Of course Nan. How many days did you miss?
judy3ca - Hi Diane!!!!
diane - lol, cavey, i'm always just too tired to shift
Michelle - I had a mentally draining week.
Kim/1/Ca - ((((diane)))
judy3ca - Wait, nan, I guess my week was okay. (((nan)))
naneb - missed two days and now we have Tropical storm Lilli ready to come into the gulf
Michelle - hey diane!
Marcia1st/GA - Tell us Judy. You made mentionof it earlier this week.
judy3ca - Sharon, there's another one for your husband: TOO TIRED TO SHIFT.
cavey - Me too diane - too much dexterity required
diane - oh...are we talking bad weeks? what was with this week anyway...ugly here too
Sharon - cavey and diane... i thought it was a hidden message... who gives a shift?
naneb - school week was okay, if I can live through my student teacher
Jan - Nan, doesn't sound like a lot of fun!
Sharon - lol, judy!
judy3ca - Marcia, just a complainer at my grade level.
Kim/1/Ca - oooohhh...... not working well, nan?
diane - lol, sharon
Alta rose - Nan, has anyone been hurt?
Jan - Sadie! we were just talking about you.
cavey - Sharon - you're hot tonight - are you drinking too?
Alta rose - Hi Sadie.
Kim/1/Ca - ((sadie who is looking chocolatey))
judy3ca - Sadie!!!!
Michelle - sounds like me with my car some mornings...just too tired to shift gears.
naneb - she is unprepared for the classroom, doesn't have a clue is the best description
Sadie T - Hello everyone!
Sharon - only if marguaritas count, cavey
cavey - ((Sadie))!!!
diane - hi sadie
naneb - no one hurt but lots of flooding
Sadie T - You were talking about me? I don't even want to know! LOL
Kim/1/Ca - sounds like a few of my credential students..........hoo boy
Michelle - Hi Golden Sadie
Alta rose - Were you affected by floods, nan?
Jan - brb phone
cavey - Only in the best way dahling
naneb - no, we are not near enough to a river or to the beach
Erin - i'm back more ants
Alta rose - Good.
Sharon - nan... we got some wonderful rain from it... now it's clearing out
Kim/1/Ca - How are they doin' Erin? Do they need snacks?
naneb - We were pretty lucky all the way around
cavey - Erin- start breaking little legs
Michelle - I'm drinking beer....
Sadie T - Um... okay, so you are talking about people who are unprepared for the classroom... and about me... same conversation?? LOL
Marcia1st/GA - I've got to get going. It was good talking to al of you.
Alta rose - Where is your ant problem, Erin?
naneb - we had over 20 inches of rain in three days
Sharon - bye marcia
cavey - You go Michelle
judy3ca - Night Marcia!
naneb - not you Sadie!! my student teacher
Erin - I'm a little ticked. I tried to "injure" one but he wouldn't "injure" so I had to kill him
Michelle - ugly, diane? it's been beautiful here every day this week.
Alta rose - Take Care, Marcia!
Kim/1/Ca - Oh, Marcia...............sigh. Okay.............
cavey - Bye Marcia
naneb - Erin!! LOL!!
naneb - bye marcia
Erin - Bye Marcia
cavey - Erin - you are bad too!
Kim/1/Ca - You have to have fingernails, Erin. And not those thick salon talons...........real ones.
Erin - Well, Kim, that's the problem. My nails constantly break....too bad for the ants
cavey - Like killing ticks KIm?
cavey - See, I can't work the shifter
Erin - Alta, sorry just saw what you wrote. They are in my kitchen and the dog food
Sharon - judy... what's your next strategy focus?
Kim/1/Ca - I guess so, Cavey.............don't have any ticks in the high desert.
Alta rose - Kim, how are you enjoying Grade One?
Michelle - we had lice check Weds. four of my kids had the buggers. yuck
Erin - EEEWWW!!!!
judy3ca - Sharon, choke, I'm trying to decide right this very minute!!!! I can't decide...DI maybe....what do you think?
naneb - don't talk about lice, makes my head itch
Alta rose - Michelle, yuck!
Sharon - lol! i'm doing good just keeping up with my own plans!
Kim/1/Ca - Thanks for asking, Alta. I think the change is allowing me to expand my wings a bit. I am having a chance to teach the stuff I have been reading about. What I don't like is the micromanagement ........ but I am working through that and doing what is best for the kids. I am anxious to see them progress.
Michelle - me too, nan. all our staff itches on head-check days
cavey - have we run the insect gamut yet?
Alta rose - Yes, their progress in Gr. 1 is really exciting, Kim.
Erin - Alright cavey, we'll stop!!!
naneb - you just have to start talking about them and I start scratching
judy3ca - Sharon, I thought I knew how I wanted to proceed, but I'm going to go to work tomorrow and reread some MOT and Debbie Miller and think. I love just thinking about it.
Sadie T - Go for it Judy - DI - and let us know how you do it
Alta rose - I'm still working on t-s. We're having a hard time getting past "I know how the character feels" when making connections. Sharon, Judy, Marcia and others on mosaicteachers have really helped, but I still need to work on it.
naneb - fiction or nonfiction, Judy or both?
Sharon - i know what you mean, judy... and i also now know what you mean when you say you spend hours picking out the perfect books for think-alouds... it's addictive
Michelle - alta, we are having the same problems.
cavey - Okay, Okay I had a Wondrous Words moment - one little girl said she noticed a "craft technique in a book she was reading and wanted to know if she could put it in her writer's notebook- Yippee
judy3ca - Sadie, LOL, right. I keep telling my coworkers that I don't want to be the expert.
Alta rose - Coo, cavey!
Sadie T - Cool, cavey!!!
Alta rose - I meant, cool! Lol!
Sharon - alta rose... i think moving on to t-t really helped that, too... they still come back with t-s and it's not so much how the character feels now
Kim/1/Ca - HOO WEE! cavey! Way to go, cheerio...............
Erin - We had a T-T connection between two Polacco books.
Michelle - neat, cavey!
Sadie T - Right Judy but you can't always have what you want.
Erin - It's always the same kids though who make them
judy3ca - Nan, that's the problem. I'd like to teach it all NF, but there's no way that's practical as we'll be reading F at the same time. So I've really got to look back at what I did last year and try to refigure.
cavey - Yay - we're on topic and off bugs!
Michelle - ok, sharon. I'll look forward to t-t
judy3ca - Sadie, thanks, Mick.
diane . - i'm back...computer problems
Sharon - like... today a girl shared about a t-s with a book where a girl was learning to rollerskate... she shared about how she understood what hard work that was because she had tried and tried
Alta rose - Yes, I find the same thing, Erin. Some make the connections so naturally.
Erin - I started WWorkshop with giving them free choice....they love it and are writign for up to half an hour. I'll start next week with getting them to focus and choose one "seed" to work with
naneb - Judy, don't you think you could do story elements, cause and effect, main idea, theme, character traits etc as important parts of fiction?
Erin - So far not one child has said "I can't think of anything" I do however have a few "superhero, evil toilet stories" going on
Sharon - judy... do mot and stw only address DI as nonfiction?
Michelle - you know, I only had 4 girls in my class today. and my boys always choose nonfiction to read independently. So the only times they can make t-s connections, really, are when I select the books.
diane . - okay...i had a victory today. one of my lowest readers brought back a classroom library book...it was filled with post its with valid t-s connections!!! she's totally motivated to read at home
Kim/1/Ca - Right now I am just having them do SOMETHING in their writing journals everyday.............. something. Today I prodded them a little bit, which I don't like to do. BUT................I need to get the habit established.
Sharon - yay, diane!
judy3ca - Sharon, that's a good one. You should have heard the t-s in my room today when Opal (Because of Winn Dixie) explains she understands how her dog feels about being left alone. One of my kids said she understood Opal was really talking about herself when her mother left...and she knew because her dad left. Oh, so sad.
Kim/1/Ca - woo hee, diane! YES!
Erin - Way to go diane
Sadie T - Diane, that's great!!
Kim/1/Ca - JUDY! Excellent!!!
Sharon - wow, judy!
cavey - You go diane!!!
Erin - Kim, that sounds right, You have to get them used to writing, the rigor of it
judy3ca - nan, I think that's what I did last year. Sharon, yes, I think they're pretty focused on NF for DI.
diane . - i'm just so thrilled for her...she's even referred to herself as a good reader because "her brain is always whispering in her ear when she reads now"
Sharon - i did a booktalk on because of winn dixie for university class last night
Erin - Michelle, sometimes I tell them they have to choose a fiction book for in class
Kim/1/Ca - Gawwwllllleeeee diane...............
naneb - diane, that is wonderful!!
cavey - Judy - have you read The Tiger Rising by DiCamillo?
judy3ca - Way to go, Diane!
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon have you read MISSING MAY
diane . - oh cavey, i love that one too
Sadie T - Diane, what a great way to describe that - "her brain is always whispering in her ear"
naneb - I love Missing May
judy3ca - Sharon, don't you love it?
Sharon - no, kim
Michelle - I had a boy connect with a book on the Titanic...he said it reminds him of when his dad died (in May) because of how sad it was, and that's how sad it was for people on the Titanic.
cavey - OOOHHHH, I love Missing May!!!
judy3ca - cavey, no--I've only read the one. Do you recommend it?
Sadie T - Wow Michelle, how sad
Erin - Very sad Michelle
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon, if you like Winn Dixie, you will LOVE Missing May....Rylant of course.............outstanding book.
cavey - It's more mature - read it for you first - very powerful, VERY!
Sharon - thanks, kim... i'll get it
Michelle - I read a good book by Eloise Greenfield the other night...Childtimes. It was actually written by her and her mother.
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon what are you doing with writing right now?
diane . - judy...i love the tiger rising...but, i've only had a few third graders that really could get into it
Sadie T - What is Missing May about?
judy3ca - Michelle, I LOVE Eloise Greenfield!!!!!
Sharon - i want the book judy spoke of by rylant... her poetry
Kim/1/Ca - Soda JerK? or Something Permanent?
judy3ca - Diane, I remember looking at it once and thinking it was too much of a challenge for my kiddos.
Sharon - alas, kim... not as much as i'd like... have to devote more time to science... we're still in journals
Karla/6/IL - Greetings from the cornfields
naneb - Missing May is about losing someone you love and finding what you didn't know you had
Sharon - something permanent, wasn't it judy?
cavey - Sadie - get it and read it. Old people, death, love ala Rylant
Michelle - I got Christmas in the Country in my Scholastic order today. I shared it right away because I was so excited with just the pictures.
Kim/1/Ca - Sadie it is so profoundly moving, really..........it is about the process of grief and the reconstitution of a family.............powerful. Wonderful.
Sharon - hello karla
cavey - Welcome Karla!
judy3ca - Sharon, oooooh, they came today! Something Permanent, poetry by Rylant and pics by Walker Evans during the Depression. Adultish poetry.
diane . - you're right, judy, i got it last year when i had a child who was 8 going on 30 and reading at that level
Alta rose - Hi, Karla.
Kim/1/Ca - Fantastic book Judy........I love it.
Karla/6/IL - What has been the hot topic of the night?
naneb - Scholastic sent me the neatest kit for free, It is all about the Declaration of Independence, posters, a video, student magazines and teacher material
Kim/1/Ca - bugs, ants, and, uh..........excrement.
cavey - Okay - which book? I missed that.
Erin - How'd you get that nan?
Sadie T - Everything is a hot topic around here.
Karla/6/IL - I am always interested in the word FREE! Nan, how did you get this kit?
judy3ca - Darn, Nan, I picked the other one, the calendar book.
naneb - I don't know, I think several teachers at my school got it, maybe because we ordered last year
Kim/1/Ca - Cavey.......Something Permanent, Cynthia Rylant poetry set to depression era photographs..............outstanding. For adults, really.
Michelle - I didn't see any offer for the kit nan described. I got the calendar book too.
Karla/6/IL - Ordered books or magazine subscriptions?
cavey - Thanks, Kim!
naneb - this kit is huge!!
naneb - I did not pick this they just sent it
Erin - Nan, we're already jealous
naneb - I ordered books twice, lots and lots of books
Sharon - nitey nite, peeps... i'm turning in to molt
judy3ca - I'm thankful to whoever mentioned the bonus points. My kids bought so many books this time that I spent $40 just to get to $200 and wound up with over 4000 bonus points (it's x21).
Karla/6/IL - I must have been cheated. I didn't get anything and I have been ordering magazines and books for years.
Michelle - goodnight, sharon
Karla/6/IL - Goodnight Sharon
judy3ca - Night, Sharon
Erin - LOL Sharon, Nighty nite
naneb - It is middle school level stuff and I don't teach social studies but my 8th graders study American history
Sadie T - Nan, I teach American History, so if you decide you don't want the kit... let me know. LOL
diane . - night sharon
cavey - Sharon- keep your wings closed! Good night!
diane . - night sharon
Sadie T - Good night Sharon!
naneb - Judy, I have my order ready to go
Michelle - my kids didn't spend nearly so much this year, so I couldn't justify spending another $150 to get all those bonus points. oh well, maybe next year.
naneb - Sadie, I will take a look at it and see if you can get one too
Erin - LOL Michelle, come on where's your book spirit?
judy3ca - nan, our order arrived today. I left all of mine just sitting there---another incentive to work Saturday, LOL.
Michelle - spent at bookcloseouts.
Karla/6/IL - Our school has a big book fair at this time. They ask that we not send home Scholastic book orders at this time.
Alta rose - Well, everyone, I am so tired I can't keep my eyes open. Goodnight!
Erin - Good night Alta
judy3ca - Michelle, my kids don't usually spend that much--I was amazed.
Sadie T - Good night Alta!
naneb - I am using school money to order my books, lots of sets and all of the 95 cent books
diane . - good night alta
Karla/6/IL - Night Alta!
Erin - Our book fair is from Borders this year. Our PTA was very upset with Scholastic
Michelle - goodnight, alta.
Kim/1/Ca - ((alta))
judy3ca - Why Erin?
cavey - Bye Alta!
Erin - We had one of the top book fairs ever last fall and in the spring they sent us garbage. I have never seen such a poor selection of books
naneb - Scholastic sent us a free book for every student because they bought so much at the book fair last year
Kim/1/Ca - BORDERS? Erin..........for heaven's sake. Did they bring the espresso machine? The lattes"
Erin - We're trying Borders but I think the books will be more expensive
Karla/6/IL - THat is a great idea Nan. I just started doing that. At the end of last year, I ordered about 25 Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices
Michelle - we only do one book fair per year.
Erin - I"m hoping Kim!!!!!!!!
Sadie T - LOL Kim!
Sadie T - You guys are ALL making me jealous here. No book fairs in high school.
diane . - we got the worst stuff last spring as well, erin
naneb - I order 5 of each boxed sets and then do book clubs
Erin - For every book bought a free mocha .,..I like that idea
Sadie T - Joyful Noise? We're back to bugs again!
Michelle - I like to go to the scholastic warehouse sales in Dec. and May.
Karla/6/IL - I was told that our book fair was a HUGE success this year. I really have no clue what returns we might get.
cavey - Come one down Sadie - we know you're elementary at heart
naneb - no warehouse close to me
Sadie T - Shhhhh, don't tell
Karla/6/IL - I went to my first warehouse sale last spring. It was awesome!
naneb - I am thinking about going back to school to get my Reading specialist
Erin - Our warehouse is about an hour away but much of the sale is on weekdays
Kim/1/Ca - Well, I made "points" with the PTO, i think................. I brought my kids to the book fair, only 2 had money. They were rolling their eyes when my kids descended on the shelves. I told the kids to each pick a book. It cost me some money but it was worth it......they looked at me differently after THAT.
Michelle - it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to get to ours, depending on traffic.
Karla/6/IL - If you are not familiar with Joyful Noise, it is awesome for intermediate and up to perform readers theater.
Erin - Wow Kim....
cavey - Oh Kim I knew I loved you for a reason
Sadie T - Kim, what a wonderful idea and how nice of you!!
Erin - I"ve heard of it Karla. I have a copy at school
diane . - lol, michelle, me too...same warehouse i'm sure
Sadie T - Karla, I have that book. I was joking about the bugs.
Michelle - do you have to take the NTE exam for that, nan? In Oregon we do, and it's very difficult. I was very relieved that I passed it.
diane . - wonder if we've been there at the same time
Kim/1/Ca - My kids were so thrilled! They kept thanking me........ they love books and this makes my job easier.
Erin - brb you know where I'm going Say a prayer for the ants
Michelle - yeah near the airport, diane. we should meet up in Dec. and go together.
naneb - Here they take the Praxis
naneb - I have taken the NTE
Kim/1/Ca - naneb.......which university?
diane . - hey...great idea...good to go with someone who also loves buying books
naneb - I have taken almost all of the classes, University of Southern Mississippi
cavey - Okay ladies - gotta go. That molting trick won't work for me tonight.
Karla/6/IL - I am currently finishing my master...FINALLY and I thought about a reading specialist certification, but the university was going through a retirement/search for the next administrator and they suggested that I not start because it might change.
naneb - BRAD!!!
Michelle - In oregon they make you take the NTE exam for everything. I sometimes wonder if the state gets a cut. There's a Reading Specialist exam.
Karla/6/IL - Hi Brad
cavey - See you soon! Night !
diane . - hey there brad
Michelle - hi brad. bye cavey
Kim/1/Ca - FINALLY...........! (((((((((bradley)))))))))))))
brad - NAN!!
Karla/6/IL - Night Cavey
judy3ca - Hi Brad!
diane . - so, i am toying with the idea of national certification
Sadie T - LOL Nan, I'm so slow tonight... thought you wanted to go back to your middle school to get something... I was thinking, "Get her reading specialist at school? What's the reading specialist doing there so late on Friday and why does Nan want to go back to get her??!!"
brad - Had to wait my turn tonite
naneb - were your ears burning?? We were talking about where you were!!
Sylvia/CA - Helllooooooooooooooooooooo Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sadie T - Hi Brad!! Good night Cavey!!
Kim/1/Ca - What they hay? YOU wait your turn? I thought you were a REAL man............................(snort)
naneb - diane, I have done national boards
Erin - Hi brad, Hi Sylvia
judy3ca - Sadie, ROFL
diane . - hi sylvia
Sadie T - Hi Sylvia!!
naneb - Hi Sylvia
diane . - how long did it take you, nan?
Karla/6/IL - Sadie- don't feel bad...that thought crossed my mind too about Nan
brad - Ears burning? LOL, I just said to my wife, "Is it me or is it a little hot down here?"
Sylvia/CA - cavey is leaving??? Awww... I just got here!
naneb - certified first time!!
Kim/1/Ca - Sadie......you've been with ELL kids too long, LOL
Karla/6/IL - Hi Sylvia
Erin - Sadie LOL thought the same thing at first myself
diane . - hey...congrats!
naneb - I guess I need to be clearer in my writing
Karla/6/IL - Nan- tell us more about national certs
Sylvia/CA - Hi Michelle!! Hi Sharon! HI Brad!
Kim/1/Ca - Hi Sylvia!
Erin - No nan you just needed a noun...credential...after reading specialist
Sylvia/CA - Hey Kim, Sadie and Judy! How are you doin' in your part of our wonderful state?
brad - Ooh, what kind of certs? Peppermint?
naneb - What do you want to know?? It is harder than anything I have ever done, but very rewarding
Michelle - I knew what she was talking about because she mentioned it elsewhere.
Karla/6/IL - you were fine nan. I think our minds naturally migrate to school buildings.
brad - <--wondering if Alta has Certs in Canada
judy3ca - Hi Sylvia. Cooling down finally.
Kim/1/Ca - smoky up here sylvia
Sylvia/CA - Alta, Brad? Is Alta Rose here???
naneb - Kim are you near the fire?
Kim/1/Ca - Nan..........lots of reading but well worth it.
naneb - she was here
Sadie T - It's been great over here Sylvia
Sylvia/CA - Kim, yeah!! We're surrounded by fires!!
Michelle - it's warm here. I'm going to the beach tomorrow because I got Tulip Sees America in the mail weds and it reminded me...There is no ocean like the ocean in Oregon"
Kim/1/Ca - We are just over the San Gabriels..............had two inclement weather days because of smoke. That was FUN, I tells ya...........
Karla/6/IL - I worry that I would be too brutal on myself. Did you find that happening to you Nan?
Erin - It's actually finally cooling down here in Santa Clarita...finally
naneb - Michelle, I would have to disagree about oceans
diane . - where are you headed michelle? we were there last weekend
Michelle - hi, sylvia...I'm a slow reader tonight. A belated hello!
Sadie T - Michelle, even I can agree with that. I love the Oregon coast!!
Kim/1/Ca - My KIDS love that book, Michelle! Especially that ONE part...............hee hee he.........
Sylvia/CA - Kim... remind me where you are... sounds like you're closer to me, than I thought.....
Sylvia/CA - No problem, michelle... I know that oregon rain can get to you!! LOL!!
judy3ca - Even third graders go, "hee hee hee."
Michelle - yeah, my son read the book and thought that part was "sick"
naneb - I went from total understanding to complete confusion in a matter of minutes, you doubt everything you do at first and then you grow and change and become more then you were
Kim/1/Ca - Yes it is cooler up here too, Erin............downright chilly tonight.
Michelle - the rain is supposed to finally return on Sunday.
Karla/6/IL - brb
Sylvia/CA - Erin! Ohh! I forgot you were in CA... or maybe I didn't know in the first place! lol! how can forget what I never knew???
Kim/1/Ca - The Antelope Valley, Sylvia...............Palmdale
Erin - I was at a swim party and was freezing...had to get my jacket. Don't laugh at me those of you who live where it really gets cold
Michelle - I'm going to Lincoln City this time, diane. meeting a friend at Mo's in Taft for lunch
judy3ca - Feeling the need to read. Good night, my friends!
diane . - ahhh...mo's
Kim/1/Ca - Good night, Judy!
brad - nite judy
diane . - night judy! happy reading
Sylvia/CA - naneb.... wow! That's great!! I'll bet it was hard being in the confusion state.. kinda feels like you're out of control... I guess that's what is going on for me, right now, as I learn how to work with 3rd graders....
Erin - Bye judy!!!
Sylvia/CA - oooohhh Judy!!! I'm impressed.. When I feel the need to read... I just keep on chatting! LOL!
Erin - No class this weekend for me. Thank God
Kim/1/Ca - So braddikins............how was YOUR hellacious week?
brad - Exactly that Kim, HELLACIOUS. I don't know what to do.
naneb - we are going to London in January, when I found out it will be in the 40's I told my husband he is out of his mind!!
Sylvia/CA - I've had all this past week off, and I get two more weeks off!
Sylvia/CA - brad??? I can't imagine things being hellacious for you!! You come across as one who always has his act together!!
Michelle - year-round school, sylvia?
Sadie T - Syvlia, I don't even want to hear about it! LOL Are you year-round?
diane . - sorry brad...
brad - My act IS together. Theirs on the other hand. . .
Sylvia/CA - Michelle, yes, year round... I started my school year back around July 21...
Kim/1/Ca - YOU brad, or bumbling bureaucrats? Or................supposed colleagues?
brad - supposed students
Sylvia/CA - Sadie, yes, year round... only time I don't like it is in the summer... when I wish I could be off for a longer summer... but other than that.. I love it!
Kim/1/Ca - Ah........... the thick plottens.
Sylvia/CA - Ohh, brad! I see what you mean!! so... go ahead and share, brad! What's going on?
Kim/1/Ca - You are NOT alone...... share.
naneb - so, what did the urchins do,Brad??
Sylvia/CA - Kim!!!! LOLOLOL!!
brad - I, literally, have very few interested in any sort of academics. They keep asking when we're going to color
diane . - definitely not alone...argghhhh
brad - I have one, (mentioned on board) who refuses to read,
naneb - LOL!! I know exactly what you mean, except mine are older!!
brad - I have another who is constantly out of seat bothering others
Michelle - do you tell them "as soon as you get home"?
Erin - Aren't you just tempted to give them crayons and say, "Right now...all day" "Get going"?
Sylvia/CA - brad, mine keep asking me when recess is!! Grrrrr!! (and that's only after 10 minutes of starting school!!!!!)
brad - I have another who insists on being the center of attention
Kim/1/Ca - Sounds like a few of mine.............. sigh.
Sylvia/CA - Good answer, Michelle!!
Michelle - I made a kindergartner cry today.
brad - I have another who has threatened so many, I finally just suspended
brad - I have one who whines and screams constantly
brad - (Am I close to half my class?)
brad - Is this my level, or my class?
Michelle - kid ALWAYS is peeking in my room. leaves his class to go to the bathroom and stops to watch us. It's irritating.
Sylvia/CA - brad, you've got 20 more students to go! LOL!!
brad - Michelle, LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Dag....Brad? You sure you're NOT me?
brad - I'm serious. Level or class?
Kim/1/Ca - both..........
Michelle - so...today I brought him into my room and invited him to sit down and join us. he didn't know what to do. tears started welling. he couldn't get out fast enough.
diane . - lol...i caught my "non-reader" holding his book upside down the other day
Sylvia/CA - brad, you are where I was last year, after having taught 5th grade for several years, and having to figure out 3rd graders!
brad - When are we going to color? My answer, "Most likely; never. This is second grade now."
Erin - Your class, unfortunately, I think
brad - Michelle, LOL
brad - IS that what it is> Me going down
Sylvia/CA - brad, could be the age level... but then, too, some groups happen to have more than their share of 'struggling students'....
diane . - mine ask about lunch five minutes after school has started
Sylvia/CA - diane!! What an outstanding teacher you must be! LOL!!
Kim/1/Ca - What you have is a reflection of the deeper issues in society. Children not parented properly, coupled with poverty and illiteracy issues.......the McDonald's Sound Bite generation, being raised by the MTV generation............not disciplined, lethargic .........
brad - Yes, yes, Kim, you've been reading your Ruby Payne, but what am I going to do? I can't help home life
Sylvia/CA - diane, they are trying to get their palettes ready for lunch with enough preparation!!! LOL!!!
diane . - lol, sylvia, i did have a text to text connection with one of the students from wayside school
brad - Speaking of home life, the number of parents incarcerated in my room is racking up daily
Sadie T - Brad, why are parents being incarcerated in your room??
Kim/1/Ca - I don't KNOW Brad! this is MY Life too! Believe me....... I find my best days are the days I am blessed with infinite patience.
brad - Because I'm throwing away their key once I get them in to discuss their LOUSY parenting techniques
Sylvia/CA - brad, you're right... we have to keep going despite what is going on at home... I really think it's a matter of just plugging ahead... believing in kids... and most of all, believing in YOURSELF, as a competent and capable teacher!!
brad - I find my best days are the days when we just put our heads down and I don't struggle forth. Then I don't get frustrated
Kim/1/Ca - I had 10/20 show up for Back to School Night. The kids told me things like, "we don't got no car" and "my mom can't drive cuz she was stopped by the cops" etc.
brad - 2/22
eilene - Hey, guys!
diane . - i must say, mine seem younger than ever this year
Sylvia/CA - I've had some days when I REALLY wanted to just walk out and go work at McDonalds... or anywhere else!! But... I just kept going... one foot in front of the other.. and finally, at the END of the school year, it finally all seemed to come together....
Michelle - my kids' parents don't come to night things because they don't have cars. or they work nights.
Sylvia/CA - Hey there, eilene!!!!
Michelle - i had 12/24 show. same as you, kim
Kim/1/Ca - YES, Sylvia.......you are right. Again.............I have to say my BEST days are when I use a lot of "mom" stuff with them..........patience is the key.
diane . - 5 out of 22 basically want to sit around and talk about bionicals all day.
diane . - i don't even know what the heck a bionical is.
brad - bionicals?
Sadie T - Brad, keep believing in those students, they will see that YOU provide them with opportunities even if they don't have those opportunities elsewhere
Sadie T - Hi Eilene!
Sylvia/CA - bionicals?? What in the world is that, diane??
Kim/1/Ca - The ones who showed were wonderful............very kind, very supportive, very pleased and thankful for what I have done so far...........
Sadie T - LOL, I was going to ask about bionicals too, but figured everyone else knew
Michelle - mine seem younger this year, but it may be that I am seeing them as "younger" since they were my 1st graders.
Erin - I feel for you guys. Our school is blessed with many good students and parents so that the ones who don't do their work or parents who don't come really stand out
Kim/1/Ca - (bionicals?)
eilene - Hey, Sadie!
Erin - I had 22/24 come to Back to School NIght
diane . - funny enough, my husband (who is 37) seems to think he knows what a bionical is...some sort of toy. transformer like creation
Sadie T - That's great, Erin!!
Kim/1/Ca - That is what I was used to, Erin...........even though my last school was mostly low income.....but I think I had built relationships. Here I am new........
diane . - i'm happy for you erin
Sylvia/CA - Erin, I think that another part of MY problem was that at my former school, we had formed such a tight bond with the parents, and had what you are describing... but when our principal left, the new person changed the whole dynamic.. and parents felt alienated by her... which is one of the reasons I left...
Michelle - bionicals are kind of like legos.
Erin - We know we are lucky to have a great principal and AO also. We call it "teacher heaven"
Sylvia/CA - Kim, are you new to your school, thisyear? This is my second year at this school...
Erin - I'll keep you guys posted for any openings. Of course you'd have to drive through Valencia Kim...but you'd get over it
Kim/1/Ca - Erin........have you met Dr. Fish yet?
Michelle - what diane's husband said....bionicals. my son has some
diane . - my school is an interesting mix. about a third of our parents open enroll their children there...they tend to be involved. the other 2/3 are local residents - very rural area...not so involved
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Sylvia.....I changed districts/schools. BIG change. Lots of stress.
Erin - Dr. Fish????????
Kim/1/Ca - Aren't you with Saugus?
Erin - My poor partner has all the PTA parents...they nag him everyday. I just laugh...I had that a couple of years ago
Sylvia/CA - OOOPS!! Hey brad!! We're here for you, pal!!!!!!!!!! I guess we went off on our own problems... sort of trying to empathize... and going off on a bit of a tangent! sorry
Erin - No, Castaic
diane . - thanks for the bionical input...what i want to know is how my husband knew this...last i checked he wasn't frequenting the toy section at target or anything
Kim/1/Ca - sorry............she is one terrific administrator............
Kim/1/Ca - BRAD.........continue please.
Erin - BRAD???????????
Sylvia/CA - Erin, I used to call my former school "The happiest place on Earth"... It was the ideal school, in so many ways... and now... I'm the not so ideal...
Kim/1/Ca - BRAD! get in here...........
Michelle - they had bionicals at McDonalds about a year or 2 ago.
Erin - Sorry Sylvia...the administrator makes a huge difference
Erin - Bradley....(middle name) get in here now!!!
brad - It's just a bad mix. We have one Hell-a gym teacher who is very tough who took them during her planning period on thursday and let me "have a break." I went to my teaching partner across the hall and actually "felt like a teacher" for the first time since last year.
Sylvia/CA - Erin, that is soooo true!!!! I never realized how important the Admin was!!!
Sylvia/CA - Eilene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erin - Our other elementary school is so happy now with their new administrator. They had gone through many bad years and now have a great prinicpa;
Michelle - our PE teacher...he's fun, but it's funny, i bet he really confuses our low-english kids. When he wants the kids to sit down, he yells "bananas", to stand up: "apples".
diane . - lol, michelle
Sylvia/CA - brad, that which does not kill you makes you stronger!!! Just imagine how STRONG you will be next year!!!!
Erin - What's a PE teacher?
brad - If I can make it there, I'll make it a-nee-where. . .
Michelle - I'm so glad I don't have to teach PE. I hate teaching PE
Sylvia/CA - oops! forgot to include the quotation marks!! "That which does not kill you, makes you stronger." ... unknown...
Erin - And sometimes brad...you just may have to let them color...so you can stay same
Sadie T - I have to go... have a good weekend everyone. Brad - hope things get better... post on the board to let us know!
Erin - Bye Sadie
Michelle - bye, sadie.
Kim/1/Ca - I know how resentful you feel. I understand it and feel it too. I HATE having to devote so much time and energy to CONTROL issues. I want to teach.
brad - bye sadie
diane . - night sadie
Sylvia/CA - "... It's up to YOU, New Brad! New Brad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "
Erin - My partner does PE for both classes I cover extrta Social STudies
brad - How did I know that would get Syl going?
Sylvia/CA - Bye, Sadie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love reading your posts on the board!!! I learn sooo much from you!
brad - Seriously want to write this year off and start anew
Erin - I just noticed. Did Jan leave when I was killing ants? Sorry Michelle...cover your eyes
naneb - Brad, I'm sorry you have had such a rough time, my year like that was last year and you just have to survive
Sylvia/CA - brad, That's 'cause you know me well! ... and I'm flattered! lol
diane . - (((brad)))
Kim/1/Ca - She got a phone call. Musta been long distance.
Erin - Oh that's right
Michelle - I'm just telling myself "she's using Raid...she's setting the Ant Traps"....
brad - maybe a phone call from Bruce and Emily? LOL
eilene - Brad, you and me both!! I hate this year so far. One emotionally disturbed child can ruin everything!
Michelle - eilene, you missed sylvia singing
brad - Try 5 LOL
Erin - Thinking positive about me..way to go Michelle
Sylvia/CA - brad, another quote that got me through last year was from a book called "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston... "There are some years that ask questions, and some years that answer." Maybe this year is a year that asks questions!
eilene - I missed you singing, syl?
brad - questions about what to do with my life?? lol
Erin - Sylvia love that quote. Thanks for sharing
Kim/1/Ca - This, my friends, is the FIRST weekend since mid August that I have NOT had to do hours of school work. I was in hyper mode all week so I could have this weekend off.
Sylvia/CA - Michelle, eilene sings, too!!! LOL!! She would have joined me in harmony if she had been here!
brad - Good for you Kim. So you've run off your Saxon for the week?
Michelle - one reason I'm going to the beach is so i CAN'T go into the classroom. but i'll be there sunday
eilene - I was out tonight, syl, and the bar's jukebox had Croce. I thought of you
diane . - oh kim, my neighbor buddy and i tried that...i didn't work. still brought a bunch home, but i refuse to drive all the way out there
Kim/1/Ca - Actually, Brad.....Saxon is pre packaged.
Erin - I feel bad that my class is actually a halfway good class.
Sylvia/CA - Erin, I just love that book for the wonderful imagery her words create!!
Michelle - I know, syl, that's what I'm saying...she missed out.
brad - with ribbons and pretty bows?
brad - You just had to break them in Erin
Sylvia/CA - Oohhh!! Jim Croce!! I was tempted to buy one of his CD's yesterday at the record store, eilene!
Kim/1/Ca - yup........ and Grace's spelling program runs circles around Open Court.................so I just write it in there.........tee hee hee..............
Michelle - oh...tell me about Saxon. I have a kid who insists he's on "fifth grade math". his old school used Saxon ONLY. I don't see the abilities, other than memorization of math facts.
Erin - Yeah, but you and Kim have been working hard too and you're both frustrated. I feel bad
brad - I think Kim has Saxon Phonics, not Math
brad - Kim, explain a little about grace's program. I've been to website, but. . .
Kim/1/Ca - My first year with it Michelle. It is a "teacher proof" program. Yes indeedy..........does all your thinking for you.
Michelle - oh. bummer
Sylvia/CA - Hey Kim, change of subject for a minute... Just wanted to remind you that the offer still stands if you need anything translated for the parents of your students!! Ok... back to topic at hand!
Erin - That's a compliment isn't it Kim. Here, we know you have a ton of education but we still don't trust you. And we, who don't have that education, have designed a program for you.
Michelle - I have a decent class this year. I gave the crazy-but-good ones to the other teacher. I couldn't deal with them another year.
brad - The first time I heard of Saxon Math I thought, "You have WHAT?!!" (sex -n-math)
Kim/1/Ca - Saxon for Math, Open Court for phonics,. Spotlight on Literacy for language arts, and Into English for my ELL kids...............what time do I have to possibly THINK?
diane . - oh. my movie just turned sad
Erin - It's a new curriculum brad for the high schoolers. WHy not reach them where they're at
brad - LOL, Sistah Kim, Preach on
Kim/1/Ca - Thanks, Sylvia! I will work on something this weekend. Last weekend too frazzled.
eilene - I also thought of you, brad... I even played "Just Push Play." You guys have permeated my life!! ack!
Sylvia/CA - Erin, I'm thinking we should not teach kids,we should get them to build the robots the 'ivory tower' wants us to be!!
Kim/1/Ca - So, Michelle......I can't say one way or the other.....from the kids' point of view. I will be more helpful in the future.
brad - Steven Tyler is God
Michelle - we do Into English for every single student in our school. I hate having to use it for everyone.
diane . - who's steven tyler?
Sylvia/CA - Wow!! Sex and Math!!!!!!!!!!!! Hmmmm... never thought it was a numbers thang! LOL!
brad - Into English?? OH God, what will they say about this in a few years. Explain please
Kim/1/Ca - Steven Tyler is one THRASHED looking God.
eilene - will, syl? What is sixty plus nine? See how you can use math in everyday life?
Erin - Like I said, I'm blessed with my principal. She knows my partner and I do not follow the curriculum but allows us our freedom to do Reading and Writing workshop and all the other great stuff
brad - <---on floor, passed out, because of Diane's lack of knowledge on THE Steven Tyler
Sylvia/CA - eilene!! Geeezzz! Imagie that! You're thinking of people you 'don't even know'! LOL!!
diane . - okay, who's steven tyler?
Kim/1/Ca - diane.....quit messing around.........
brad - Steven Tyler is Sex Personified (although as Kim says, a little thrashed sex)
Sylvia/CA - Michelle, we do Into English, too.... I'm not to thrilled by it!
diane . - ???
Kim/1/Ca - that;s like asking who mick jagger is..............
Erin - Sylvia, I emailed brad when I saw a license plate that said "ALLUPNT"
Kim/1/Ca - He is the lead singer for Aerosmith.
diane . - ohhhh...sorry...i was thinking researcher...lol
Erin - That's ALL UP ON IT for those of you who missed that chat
diane . - woops
eilene - Steven Tyler is the lead singer to Aerosmith, diane
Sylvia/CA - *GASP*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eilene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michelle - oh yes, one of our more brilliant chats, eh.
brad - LOL, Steven Tyler is second only to Barak Rosenshine when it comes to educational research
Erin - But look what it started Michelle.
Sylvia/CA - LOL, Erin!!!
diane . - i did know that...i thought maybe i had missed out on some new information
Sylvia/CA - Who's Mick Jagger and who is steven Tyler?
brad - Okay (pant, pant) back to edu-ma-cation.
Sylvia/CA - I'm slow!
Kim/1/Ca - I don't mind the big ideas in Into English......but it is so.........busy. I dont' know..............I can accomplish the same stuff with stories, graphic organizers, interactive writing, etc.................
brad - diane, in the words of steven tyler, "You've got the right key baby, but the wrong key hole,"
Sylvia/CA - barak rosenshine? hmmmmmm
diane . - i must say, however, i was really a joy division, bauhaus fan as a teenager...still have a love of bad, depressing eighties music
Erin - Well I love you guys, but I'm dead tired. 12 hours away from home and then ...the ANT invasion...don't tell Michelle I'm going back in
Michelle - yeah. but those silly posters...at the third grade level my kids Hate them. They are too simple for my high-English and EO's.
brad - Diane thinks Robert Smith is God
Erin - See you later. Good night
diane . - lol, brad, i love that quote
brad - gnite erin, (she must be tired, she hasn't ragged on me once)
Michelle - leave them in peace for the night, erin. goodnight
eilene - night erin
Erin - Oh brad. I was being nice because I was such a rag last week. I'll be back to normal again next week
diane . - yep...you have a clear picture of my teenage angst years...grey lipstick, purple hair, waif thin...ahhhh the good ol' days
Sylvia/CA - Ok, Erin!! have a good night!! Sleep well!!!!
brad - so, wait a minute, what is this Into English crap and when does it reach Ohio to permeate my life with more crap to stuff in the closet?
Sylvia/CA - brad, she feels sorry that you have had such a bad week... but.. the night is still young!!! The rest of us can beat you up, if you like?!!!!! LOL!!
diane . - now it's gray hair...not gray lipstick
Michelle - Into English is a program for teaching English to ESL kids. it's teacher-proof, you know, so it should be there soon
Michelle - I know someone who is using Into English in the SF area to teach her "native-ebonics" students english
brad - LOL, One of my naughties asked, "Mr. Johnson, why you got so much gray hair?" Can you imagine the look I gave her? "um, you" yes i said it
Kim/1/Ca - We have such a high population of ELL kids, Brad.........Into English is supposed to build language...........I say it is just GOOD teaching that builds language............so...........I glance at it and pick and choose. But I write it in the plan book and do what is best for my kids.
Sylvia/CA - It's not teacher proof, Michelle.... I refuse to follow it step by step!! LOL! I sure hope anyone from my school isnt reading this!!!!
Michelle - I write it in the plan book and teach Art instead. Or extra literacy or math or Social Studies.
Sylvia/CA - brad, you should have just pointed at one gray hair and told the kid it was named after him/her! LOL
Kim/1/Ca - did she "ax" you something brad?
Michelle - Me too, Sylvia. i would get in trouble if anyone from school reads this
Michelle - Me too, Sylvia. i would get in trouble if anyone from school reads this
diane . - subversive, michelle
brad - I think we're too far into the chat to be archived
Kim/1/Ca - hee hee hee Michelle.......(high five!)
eilene - oh, I doubt if anyone from district reads this, but you never know......
Sylvia/CA - Now, Michelle, Michelle, Michelle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya gotta teach kids to speak English!!! After all, WE ARE IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!
brad - all the time, people ax me questions. It's even rubbed off. Sometimes I say, "Who talking?" (insert picture Gary Coleman here)
Sylvia/CA - They don't archive all of these chats, do they???? I sure hope not!!!!!!!!! I gave out my email address last week!!!
diane . - hey...i know who gary coleman is
Sylvia/CA - ok.. I'll brb..
eilene - "ax"??? don't say that please!!
brad - sylvia, after about an hour I'd say we stop being archived. As far as I know they've archived every one.
Syllvia/AZ - Ok... don't ax me what just happened! LOL!
Kim/1/Ca - Earlier, eilene, I shared ........... a student told me she "axed" somebody and I deadpanned............"did she bleed?"
Michelle - sylvia moving?
diane . - lol, kim, i missed that earlier
Syllvia/AZ - Michelle, wait... lol
eilene - good for you, Kim!! I had to work with adults who still insist on saying that, and pacific, instead of specific
diane . - sylvia moving and spelling own name wrong
brad - oh, eilene that is a pet peeve
Michelle - good move, sylvia
brad - another pet peeve---irregardless
Sylvia/OR - eilene!! NOT!! I'm a NATIVE from Oregon!!!
Michelle - oh yeah, brad. that's a big one
diane . - welcome to oregon eilene!!
Sylvia/OR - I pacifically remember being born in Oregon.... and never leaving until someone ax me to!
Sylvia/OR - ... irregardless of what I might think!
brad - Irregardless where you live Sylvia, you're still the "crazy one."
Kim/1/Ca - Sylvia! You stop this nonsense! Y'hear me?
diane . - ohh...i hate it when people say "yuh-leven" for eleven
Sylvia/OR - Awww, Kim!! But I don't want to get busted by anyone from my school!!!
Kim/1/Ca - Sylvia... You are flusteratin' me.......
Sylvia/OR - I've been teaching for yuh leven years!!
eilene - I never heard that one, diane
Michelle - my grandma gets flusterated a lot
brad - never heard that before diane, but I hate when people say COOP-un for coupon.
Kim/1/Ca - Uh...okay...........yeah. YEE ah.......I get it now. Uh huh.
Sylvia/OR - I need a coo pon for buying more books from amazon!!
diane . - or...warshington instead of washington
Sylvia/OR - (speaking of Professional Readings)
Michelle - my grandpa answers the phone...or used to..."yeahllow"
Kim/1/Ca - Pet Peeve, Brad! CooPon........
brad - Lots of warsh around here diane
Sylvia/OR - Maybe I should move to Warshington...
Michelle - diane, i hate that one too. I grew up in Vancouver Warshington
diane . - oooo...drives me crazy
brad - I think that's from an old movie or the military michelle, cuz a lot of older people seem to do it
Kim/1/Ca - Noo cu lar
eilene - here's one that I never heard before until I started teaching. "Here's mine's"
diane . - michelle, hate it when people call vancouver "the couv"
Sylvia/OR - Kim!! THAT is one that gets to me.. especially when the president of these great United States does it!
brad - big in my school. Mine's do!
eilene - that is so ghetto, I'm sorry!
eilene - that's up there with, "My bad!"
Sylvia/OR - mines??? Do you get that in Illinois ,too, eilene??? I thought it was a carry over from Spanish to English.. in spanish, it's pluralized...
brad - around here radio stations call cincinnati, the "Nattie"
brad - or better yet, "Mine's does"
Michelle - when people first started saying "my bad", i thought they were asking "am I bad?"
Kim/1/Ca - Where the HE** did that "my bad" come from? Sheeeee zits that one drives me nuts.
eilene - Yes, I did... I also have kids that can't even pronounce their own state correctly... It's Illinois, not illinoise
diane . - ory gon
Sylvia/OR - You all realize that you are giving me ammunition to use on you all in another chat, don't you?????
Kim/1/Ca - you writin' it all down, sylvia?
eilene - Well, as far as mispronouncing state names, I was duly corrected about the pronounciation of Oregon
Sylvia/OR - Mines... my bad! nuc-ular, ax... coopon....
Michelle - well, sylvia-of-many-states, you shouldn't talk...
Sylvia/OR - no kim, typing it! LOL!
Sylvia/OR - I dont talk, I type!
Michelle - Diane, eilene can pronounce everything now...even Willamette.
Sylvia/OR - I like that.. Sylvia of many states!!! My native american name!
eilene - Will lamb ette
diane . - oh eilene, i am so proud....but how about tigard?
brad - the fave though, "Can I drink water?"
eilene - accent on the second syllable, of course
eilene - don't mention that one, brad!!!!
brad - "I think so, if you bend over far enough and don't let it go up your nose."
Michelle - no! eilene!
Sylvia/OR - Ill y noise...
Michelle - TY gerd
diane . - lol, syliva...my mother-in-law really does go by night bear
Michelle - I taught you...how soon you forget.
eilene - oh, I was still talking about Willamette
brad - LOL, I'm too sarcastic for the little ones. They soooo don't get it.
Michelle - ok, i take it back.
Kim/1/Ca - ROTFLMAO.........yer all killin' me here..................my liver is around here somewhere............
Sylvia/OR - I think that's wonderful, diane!
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, but it makes you feel better huh Brad...........
Michelle - me too, brad. when teaching 1st grade, I had one really smart kid who would explain to the others what I really meant.
brad - Kim, you fall apart too easily. I have a coop-un for some Crazy Glue
Sylvia/OR - brad, that's why I liked teaching older kids! they were a great captive audience!
brad - (sheepishly scuffling foot) um, yeah
Sylvia/OR - Kim, that's 'cause we AXd you!
Kim/1/Ca - I tell you......I have one girl who, for the life of her, simply can NOT NOT NOT follow directions because her jaws are always flapping..............yak yak yak
brad - Kim, I have two
Kim/1/Ca - So, today Idid this big, over the top explanation about how your EARS can't work when your mouth is constantly GOING and I even drew a diagram. She was floored.
brad - I asked her the other day if she talked just to let herself know if she was still alive
eilene - Have any of you ever read Educating Esme?
Sylvia/OR - Kim's describing ME as a kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (NOT!!!! Most people don't beleive I was ever the shy quiet kid, but I most definitely WAS!)
brad - Yes, eilene
diane . - man, kim, that's driving me crazy this year...
Kim/1/Ca - I LOVE that book, eilene!
eilene - She talks about having good days...
Sylvia/OR - no, eilene...
diane . - i did a few years ago, eilene
Sylvia/OR - She used to post here on T.net regularly... (esme did)
brad - Kids talk way more these days. They are not happy without constant noise???
Michelle - I sat a few kids together who never listen to directions and always ask the group "what are we supposed to do?" after I set them off to work. It's working wonders. They were at first amazed that no one else could tell them what they were supposed to do either.
eilene - How she has 30 days all in one... She has a good day with Pablo, and a bad day with Anna. A fun day with Chris, etc
Sylvia/OR - brad, must be our present day society... kids are overstimulated!
eilene - It really struck me that that's how it is! We have all these "days" rolled into 6 hours. It's exhausting!
Kim/1/Ca - I mean, she will INSTANTLY say, "whattawedo?" the SECOND I let them loose on something NOT 1.2 SECONDS after I have explained it thoroughly for the SECOND TIME..............I will look at her incredulously...........like........................."box of rocks?"
Michelle - I remember when Esme used to post. It has been at least a year since I've seen her post
Sylvia/OR - Kim... just tell her to stop. Take a deep breath... and think.
diane . - well...you can't really blame her. that main board can be wicked
Sylvia/OR - I have a couple of kids who do the same as your student does, Kim... I tell them to just stop... focus.. think...
brad - KIM, LOL, I have a boy like that. One day I just said, "I don't care, Michael, just ball it up in the trash if you want to." He actually started to until some kids stopped him!! I just said, "It's a good thing you had a few friends there, Michael." (of course he still didn't get it)
Michelle - I know. I rarely go there anymore. Especially since I have the Prof. board now.
eilene - fortunately, I only have one this year... I must be starting to dumb things down, reflexively now
Sylvia/OR - I still go to the main chatboard... I just skip over the controversies... or the nagging... or the rude... there are still good things to be learned there....
Kim/1/Ca - I am just amazed at the lack of cognitive processing that goes on witth some of these kids........they will not expend the effort....ah patience.............if it could just be bottled.
Michelle - if the strand is 20 posts long...you can bet it's got a war raging.
eilene - Brad, by the by... You and I have the same outlook on homework
Sylvia/OR - Sometimes when I read the Prof. Rdgs board, I just feel dumber and dumber that I'm not up on all that stuff you guys talk about.. But I'm learning a lot!
brad - that wasn't you asking though, was it?
Sylvia/OR - Michelle, yeah.. you're right about the long posts...
brad - Kim, mine's so don't think
diane . - lol, sylvia, many of us have admitted to feeling that way
eilene - slyvia, I'm the one who knows absolutely nothing. No, brad, it wasn't me
Michelle - Our new math program calls for homework about 3-4 nights per week. We are told we need to follow the program precisely this first year.
Kim/1/Ca - AMEN, eilene..........we need a homework revolution...............viva la revolucion!
Sylvia/OR - eilene, not true!!
Michelle - well, I really feel dumb sometimes on the prof. board too. sometimes I print the messages so I can read them more carefully.
eilene - trust me, sylvia.... I know only lyrics!
Sylvia/OR - woooohoooo Kim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We shall not be moved!!! We shall overcome!!!
brad - WE purposely chose a school for our daughter where homework does not occur on any regular basis until the last year of elementary
eilene - V - A-C-A-TION!!
diane . - okay you guys...i'm yawning uncontrollably
eilene - that's the lyric on my mind, right now
Sylvia/OR - There have been so many times I want to add to a thread, but I feel like I don't even know enough to be able to post!
brad - You should hear the number of times I say, "Will you guys turn that down so I can concentrate?" when I'm just reading the board
Kim/1/Ca - (mournfully) ..nobody knows the trouble i've seen..................................................nobody knows my sorrow...................................swing low sweet chariot..............
eilene - Here in Illinois, some parents sued the schools for invasion of privace because of the amount of time homework has taken up
Sylvia/OR - Diane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But we're trying to entertain you!!! LOL!1
brad - good for them, eilene. viva la parents!
diane . - well, sylvia, i have definitely been entertained
Sylvia/OR - brad, yeah!! it's gotta be quiet to concentrate on that stuff! It's heavy duty!
Michelle - well, when Jan posted all that stuff about Task Analysis, I was really embarrassed because I really had to think hard about what she was posting...and it was about stuff I was supposed to be talking to my colleagues about!
Michelle - bye, diane.
eilene - exactly!!! viva la whatever!!!!
brad - I wonder whatever happened to that moldy teacher?
Kim/1/Ca - the cheese is old and moldy
diane . - just been a really LONG week with insane parents (not mine but colleague's)
brad - Michelle, I'm still moving through the task analysis thread very slowly. But at least I understand Jan Unlike roger
Sylvia/OR - Michelle, I got a lot out of that post... and again, wanted to add to it, but felt too 'shallow' to say anything! LOL!! not enough solid info to support what I wanted to say!
Sylvia/OR - G'night Diane!!!!! (geeeezz! Late again!)
Kim/1/Ca - that thread made me tired.............i just logged off................
Michelle - my presentation thingy went pretty well, though. Several people ended up asking for copies on my lesson plans and I talked to another for 1.5 hours after school about how to plan her Lit. block.
Sylvia/OR - Kim, yeah.. had to take it in bits and pieces...
brad - So Kim, not only do you have the Saxon lock step crap to put up with but your kids are unruly also
eilene - sly, better late than later
Sylvia/OR - Good for you, Michelle!!
Michelle - sylvia...well I'm sure you noticed my first answer to the questions from Sadie..."I don't know". I just couldn't think last Saturday.
Sylvia/OR - sly? or Syl? lol!
eilene - that would actually be for syl, not sly
Kim/1/Ca - yeah.......welcome to my world.
brad - One talk with Jan and I feel I learned NOTHING in college
Sylvia/OR - sly, too!
Sylvia/OR - hehehe, eilene! my pal!
brad - is it just september? was I like this last sept?
brad - or at least what I SHOULD HAVE learned
Kim/1/Ca - I was dumbfounded when the grade level leader gave me an AGENDA to discuss with my parents on Back to School Night. And also a "sign in sheet" just like everyone else's.................
eilene - we should all record ourselves so that we can hear ourselves every septemer. The boyfriend swears I'm saying the exact same stuff as I was last year
Kim/1/Ca - You are right, eilene............! LOL
brad - last sept was such a blur I honestly don't remember
Michelle - I keep thinking, how did i ever survive my first year teaching? i'm so tired this year already!
brad - Kim, so what about Grace's program do you love?
Kim/1/Ca - I thanked her. I wrote my own dang agenda and then just talked to my parents and kids.
Michelle - But I spent most waking moments at school my first year.
Sylvia/OR - I've been teaching for at least 24 years... how long have you each been teaching?
brad - some people need the jogging the agenda provided Kim. It's when it's mandated that we balk.
Michelle - we don't have to talk to the parents about anything at Open House. We just stand their and smile and shake hands.
eilene - we just stand there and look beautiful too
Kim/1/Ca - Well.............it is a developmental spelling program. She uses dictation, which builds/applies phonemic awareness..............they write the words after slowly saying them. It hits the blending stuff OC hits but has them WRITE, which is tactile. Sometimes we cut the words apart and sort them by rimes...................
brad - I sit and look beautiful (cuz no one ever shows)
Kim/1/Ca - That is IT brad. precisely
Michelle - lol at brad looking beautiful.
Michelle - in his best clothes, no one to show off for though
Sylvia/OR - is anyone gonna tell how long they've been teaching?
brad - just curious. I"m getting more into the decoding side with these low seconds. I realize now that no one must teach true decoding in this school. Every time I ask what "sound" this is, they say "D" I say, No, D is a letter, not a sound. They don't get it.
Kim/1/Ca - I was also told to NOT let the kids into the room. To have them "play outside" while I talk to the parents. (LOUDLY guffawing here)
Kim/1/Ca - 8 years Sylvia
eilene - eek! sorry, syl, this is only my second year
Michelle - aww....here the kids show the parents around the room
brad - And the blending?? Phew! Yeah, hee, hee.. . . Hee. . . hoo. . .
Kim/1/Ca - Brad............. let me send you her second grade version.........TRUNKS. I have a copy.
Michelle - this is my third year. I also subbed 2 years and spent 4 years in he l l
Michelle - @#$%was restaurant management
brad - @#$%is for children
Sylvia/OR - So... all of this 'new stuff' isn't new to most of you! I was big into 'whole language' and then suddenly phonics was the rage...
eilene - It's the median approach now, syl
brad - did anyone see my post on the board about the mcguinness book?
Sylvia/OR - eilene... yeah... median...
eilene - no, but I can sure go for one, now
Sylvia/OR - remind us what you wrote about, brad....
brad - median? isn't that the thing in the middle of the highway?
Sylvia/OR - lol@eilene!! I'll have one with you!
eilene - that too, brad
brad - I bought the mcguiness book, "Why our Kids can't read" or something like that
eilene - the thing that you can never avoid
Michelle - When I first went into the education field in college, 13 years ago, Whole Language was all the rage. It was wierd to go back to college and find out it was a dirty word (dirty 2 words?)
Sylvia/OR - brad...that's what's so sad... it's in the middle.... no highs, no lows... just median... blah!
Sylvia/OR - Michelle, right! bad words, these days! That's why I feel like I have to learn it all 'all over again'
brad - LOL, my cousin used to call it the Meridian. We used to joke with her; we still call it that. We laugh about which one's Prime
brad - "Don't hit the Meridian," she'd say when I was getting my license.
Sylvia/OR - helllooooooooooooooooo?? Anyone there???
Michelle - I haven't heard of "median approach", is that like "balanced literacy"
Michelle - ?
brad - what happened?
Sylvia/OR - raise your hand if you're still here?
Sylvia/OR - *raising hand*
Michelle - brad was the conversation stopper with his driving meridian
brad - logjam, I guess. that took a long time to post
brad - so did that one
brad - Kim's probably picking up her parts
Michelle - that darn liver. keeps falling. she should keep a bowl nearby
Sylvia/OR - Kim?? kim??? Who's kim??
Sylvia/OR - LOL@Michelle!!!
Sylvia/OR - Are you all asleep and don't want to admit it????????
Michelle - well, I did tell myself I would only stay two hours...
Sylvia/OR - should I fill the board up with GREEN????
brad - I'm thinking Kim and Eilene are having private conversation and not letting us in on it
Michelle - I'm so tired today! exhausting week.
brad - LOL Michelle, two hours, hee hee
Sylvia/OR - Let's all do PM's and then no one will show up here! LOL!!
Sylvia/OR - Hey brad, michelle... what do suppose they are saying about us?
Michelle - what? PM's? what are those?
brad - seriously, what happened to eilene
Michelle - see....they are defecting to Oregon.
Sylvia/OR - pm=private message
eilene/or - no, my computer crapped out on me
Sylvia/OR - Oohhh! eilene moved to oregon to be closer to me! LOL!
brad - defecating in oregon??? ROFLMAO
Michelle - good fertilizer?
brad - Eilene's computer crapped out??? ROFLMAOPMP
Sylvia/OR - YUK, brad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
eilene/or - well, they would find a way to recycle it
brad - smell that bacon?
Michelle - bacon?
brad - kim's gone now in the occupants box
Sylvia/OR - KIMMMMMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where AAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE YOUUUU???????????????????
Michelle - yeah. she left w/out saying goodbye?
Sylvia/OR - she must have gotten frozen out....
brad - remember our talk about bacon fashioned from raw sewage
Michelle - oh, I think I blocked that from my memory
Sylvia/OR - Is Kim short for something else.. I mean.. Like Pam might be for Pamela... or Jen might be for Jennifer?
eilene/or - sounds a bit like Soylent Green
brad - conveniently, eh, michelle?
Michelle - yes,
Sylvia/OR - eeeeeuuuuuww Brad! I'm glad I missed that chat!
brad - Kim is short for Kimbodia
Michelle - i saw her post once about a teacher calling her Kimberlie
Sylvia/OR - ROTFLOL, Brad!!! KIMBODIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sylvia/OR - Ohhh! yeah!! Ok..
Michelle - kim is short for eilene?
Sylvia/OR - KIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMBERLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brad - Kim is short for Kimball
eilene/or - what?
Sylvia/OR - Brad... is that short for Bradley????
eilene/or - since when is kim short for eilene
Sylvia/OR - Kimmmmmmmmmmmmmmmballllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!! Where are you???????????????????????
eilene/or - I lean because I have less understanding
Michelle - lol syl
Sylvia/OR - ROTFLOL@Eileen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sylvia/OR - oops! EILENE!
Michelle - kim could be short for Kimton.
Sylvia/OR - Kimmmmmmmerton???????????? Where arrrrrrrrrre you?????
eilene/or - how appropropriate for this board, eh?
brad - Michelle is short for Michelley
Sylvia/OR - I added my own 'er'!!! LOL
Michelle - no, it's short for Michelle-Belle.

Sylvia/OR - SylverLake!
Michelle - there's a Silverton, Oregon. that must be where you are, sylvia
brad - like the dessert
eilene/or - sylvester?
Sylvia/OR - hehehehe, Eilenerton!!! Thanks!! *sparkling all over!*
brad - Eiloney (like baloney)
eilene/or - of course, you're also an energy saver too, sylvester
Sylvia/OR - That's right, Michelle!! But now you blew my cover!! Now everyone will know it's me! LOL
Sylvia/OR - I'm also Tweety Bird's nemesis!
eilene/or - bzzz! try again, brad, that one doesn't work
Sylvia/OR - or anenome! or enemy
brad - Eilene? Can I call you "Link?"
Sylvia/OR - cute buzzer, eilene!
Michelle - Bradony?
eilene/or - link? why would you want to?
