naneb - Hi Judy
naneb - and Grace
judy3ca - Hi Grace and Nan!
Grace/IL - Hi Judy and naneb
naneb - I will not be here for long, Sick
judy3ca - Oh, sorry, nan!
stenz - Sorry to hear that naneb
Sharon - hideeho!
naneb - (((((((((((Sharon))))))))))
judy3ca - (((Sharon)))
naneb - bad cold!!
Grace/IL - Oooh, naneb, get well soon. Hi Sharon
Sharon - how's everyone tonight?
naneb - thanks
naneb - has anyone heard from Brad?
judy3ca - Tired, lol.
Sharon - awww nan... there's some nasty stuff going around... take care of yourself
naneb - I am going to Mississippi's Reading association convention on Monday
judy3ca - Not me, but I'm thinking about Brad and his wife.
Grace/IL - Catching up after last weekend. Our schedules were really confounded by the airlines.
naneb - me too, all day I have been wondering
judy3ca - Cool, nan! I'm going to a conference on Monday, too.
Grace/IL - Also waiting to hear from Brad.
Sharon - did he mean that today is the due date when he said that friday was the "scheduled" delivery?
naneb - I hope I feel better, plan on spending tomorrow on the couch
Sharon - night mercy
naneb - Friday morning is what he said!!
naneb - I had a student expelled this week!!
Grace/IL - naneb, how large is the MRA conference -- attendees?
Sharon - ack... what happened nan?
Sharon - hi kim!
Grace/IL - (((((Kim)))))
naneb - I am not sure Grace but I think it is pretty large, It is a Beau Rivage Casino which is enormous
judy3ca - (((Kim)))
Kim/1/Ca - (((((Merry Merry......and hugs and smooches..)))))
naneb - 5 girls called the school over Thanksgiving and threatened to blow it up!! They did *67 and thought no one would catch them
Kim/1/Ca - naneb..........under the weather?
Grace/IL - IL has around 3000 at conferences
judy3ca - Kim, did you hear from Brad?
naneb - bad cold!! sniff!!
Kim/1/Ca - No....(stamping foot here)......you would THINK he would have the DECENCY and courtesy to let us know RIGHT AWAY!!!!
naneb - it was a prank that got out of hand and now they are all expelled for 1 year
Grace/IL - Kids can do some really stupid things but always leave their tracks.
judy3ca - LOL
judy3ca - 1 year?????
Kim/1/Ca - I did the dance of JOY today. I literally LEAPED all around the room. Shoppel can decode CVC words!!!
Grace/IL - No temper tantrums allowed here, Kim
Sharon - a year??
naneb - 1 calendar year before they can come back to school
Sharon - yay, kim!!!
Kim/1/Ca - This is the child who recognized 9 letters and ONE sound in early September.........
Grace/IL - Yeah, for Shoppel!
judy3ca - Doesn't that seem excessive? The year, I mean.
judy3ca - Congrats, Kim!
naneb - my student will get after school classes because a sped student must receive services
Kim/1/Ca - I saw the assessment, RIPPED it out of my volunteer's hand and screamed, "SHOPPEL? SHOPPEL?" I think he thought he was in trouble...........
Sharon - i didn't know that they could expel spec ed students without a WHOLE lot of hoopla!
naneb - seemed so to me but I didn't have any part in that decision, it was because it was a threat against a school
Grace/IL - Sometimes the breakthroughs are sooo visible.
Kim/1/Ca - I PICKED him up and danced around........the other kids were so funny. They kept coming up to me and saying, "I can sound that out too," "I can read too."
naneb - we had a manifestation determination today, to see if it was a result of her disability and then she can receive the same punishment as a reg. ed kid, but she must receive services so, she gets after school classes
Grace/IL - It was sort of like finding the lost sheep, wasn't it? The rest didn't understand the importance.
judy3ca - Wow, Kim, I thought I was demonstrative!
Sharon - oh i like that, grace... finding the lost sheep
Kim/1/Ca - The really touching thing is that I was all over Luis this morning like a cheap suit........telling him he was soooooo smart but just wasting his potential horsing around ......... Shoppel says, "I'm not." I said, "You're not what?" He says, "Smart."
judy3ca - hi eilene
Sharon - nan... the techie guys brought me a christmas present today....
Grace/IL - Hi eilene -- long time, no chat.
naneb - and now he knows that he is so smart!!
naneb - what??
Kim/1/Ca - Judy....Shoppel is little. I can pick him up. Luis is the size of a refrigerator.
eilene - Hey, guys! I'm glad I come on... I have some major questions to ask
Sharon - a brand new averkey gold plus... yay! now, they gotta get it up for me
Grace/IL - What a boost to his ego.
Sharon - utoh... major questions?
naneb - I got my new one last week, does it have the laser pointer and the spot
judy3ca - Kim, LOL, well, I brought my little EL with illiterate parents up for a handshake today because he did so well on a reading assessment.
Kim/1/Ca - I am still emotional about it.... his success has helped ME more than he will ever realize, I think.
Sharon - i dunno, nan... didn't read the box it was late and i was in a hurry to get somewhere
naneb - bet it does, wait till you try it, tooooo cooool!!
Kim/1/Ca - Hey Grace............no review lesson after the two consonant ending words?
eilene - Yeah, major questions... Our SIP (School Improvement Plan) says that the teachers have to do DOL, DOM, and Problem of the Day every day. What is the value of that? Is there research out there that I can bring in to prove my idea that it's just "fluff"
judy3ca - what is that, sharon?
Sharon - but how long will it take me to learn how to do it???
Kim/1/Ca - ((((Erin and Eilene))))
Sharon - the thingy that shows your computer screen on the tv, judy
naneb - it is a snap, just turn on the tv and switch to the computer, one button
Grace/IL - No, Kim, it all develops really fast from now on.
judy3ca - Erin, are you feeling better?
eilene - Hey, Kim!
judy3ca - Oh, thanks, Sharon, ours must be called something else.
Grace/IL - eilene, there may be a bit of value in reviewing the same concepts day after day, just as long as you don't spend much time on it.
Sharon - eilene... i'm not familiar with research on that?
Erin - Yes, thanks. Finally got report cards done and kitchen painted
judy3ca - Good for you, Erin. I addressed Christmas cards this evening....only the addresses, LOL.
Kim/1/Ca - I don't know eilene........it seems to me that skills need to be embedded in some sort of context...........DOL and DOM remind me of busy work activities designed to keep them busy while you gulp your last bit of coffee or check off the homework...........
Erin - LOL Judy
eilene - I hear that it just doesn't transfer into the kid's writing. DOL is so haphazard that there is no reinforcement of any one particular skill.
Erin - Sorry if I fade in and out. I am looking for some paperwork in this mess I call an office
eilene - That's what I feel, Kim... It's just busy work
Grace/IL - (((cavey))) (((jodi)))
naneb - Grace, my 8th graders are doing the Rewards program and today they had to write a sentence with the word perfectionist, one of them asked what is that word? another student said look at it and figure it out and they sat there and figured out what the root word was and what the word meant
judy3ca - (((cavey))) How's your sister?? The baby??
Kim/1/Ca - True........If you are wanting to teach or practice that particular skill, I would MODEL during a mini lesson in Writer's Workshop.
Grace/IL - eilene, I think one would get farther by using a child's sentence rather than the ones in the
Erin - Hi cavey
Grace/IL - DOL books -- ooops, hit the wrong button -- message in two parts.
cavey - Okay, hi picked another color!
naneb - I put a sentence to edit on the board for bellwork ( it is required to have bellwork)
Kim/1/Ca - OR, Eilene, do it as part of Morning Message or Daily News........something a bit more meaningful............?
eilene - lol, that's okay Grace, my fingers are still stiff from the cold!
cavey - OOh, this is definitely not me!
Kim/1/Ca - BELLWORK? Man, I thought that went out to pasture................hee hee hee. Sorry, naneb..............
judy3ca - cavey---how's your sister? and the baby?
eilene - What exactly is Morning Message?
Grace/IL - naneb, that's great. Teaching syllables and affixes really helps.
judy3ca - bellwork?
naneb - I wish, it is all Harry wong stuff
Kim/1/Ca - CAVEY you quit yer color changin' and git yerself in here..............
cavey - Hi judy, she's fine, sitting here beside me!
judy3ca - Great, cavey!
Kim/1/Ca - I bet GRACE remembers BELLWORK.
naneb - Judy, it is something for kids do when they come in while you do attendance etc.
jodi - Hi everyone! We also have to do DOL &DOM in each of our classes. This gets our kids focused as they come into our rooms. I would like to know if having an essential question up on the board helps in any way?
judy3ca - What is bellwork?
judy3ca - oops, sorry Nan, just saw your explanation.
cavey - Oh , I have to get rid of this putrid color BRB
naneb - no problemo!!
Grace/IL - Not really -- never called anything bellwork. Always had stuff on their desks to do when they arrived.
naneb - what is DOM?
Kim/1/Ca - Morning Message.........well, if you are inclined to do it (cough cough), you put up a simple message greeting the kids and telling them what is planned...........something simple. You can make mistakes and have them "correct" it.
eilene - Daily Oral Math
naneb - thanks
cavey - Okay better!
naneb - we have to have the objective and a bellwork assignment on the board every period
Grace/IL - My friend always had a morning message for the kiddos. It didn't strike me as terribly exciting.
eilene - okay... something that the kids can relate to textually
Grace/IL - cavey, I like your new color much better.
Kim/1/Ca - Daily Oral Math.
cavey - Thanks Grace, me too!
jodi - Anyone working on National Boards?
Kim/1/Ca - Daily Oral Math.
naneb - been there, done that last year
Grace/IL - Good morning, boys and girls. Today is Tuesday. It is very cold outside, etc.
cavey - How is everybody? What are you guys talking about now that I've settled down.
judy3ca - Has anyone read any more Graves?
Kim/1/Ca - WE are stressed out enough as it is, Jodi...................are you?
Kim/1/Ca - We were talking about YOU Cavey. Guess we best shuddup now.
cavey - Well Judy, I picked it up today for about 20 minutes
jodi - I'm working on EA Math
Kim/1/Ca - I have been BAD, Judy........really bad. I plan to get caught up this weekend a bit.
judy3ca - cavey, what do you think about the part where he talks about how often we write?
eilene - another question is regarding the research of the benefit of instruction time. Where can I lay my hot little hands on that? I butted heads with my principal on many things, this past week
Sharon - i'm back... daughter's friends were here and she was leaving
Grace/IL - There was an article in the Illinois Reading Council Journal about books on writing. The recommendation was to go back to the original Graves book and Lucy Calkins first book.
cavey - Oh Kim, I hope it's more interesting than that in here!
Erin - No Judy (hanging head)
Kim/1/Ca - You were off ALL DAY and devoted only 20 minutes to your professional development, cavey? I am appalled.
naneb - I have improving reading comprehension instruction as one of my goals for my evaluation. Do y'all have any good ideas of things I can use as evidence?
Kim/1/Ca - Did anyone get their Reading TEacher yet????? EXCELLENT STUFF>
Kim/1/Ca - Did anyone get their Reading TEacher yet????? EXCELLENT STUFF.
cavey - I think I'm in big trouble Judy, I only have my kids for 90 mins total for everything!
Grace/IL - eilene, do a search for "Time on task" research
eilene - ((I'm poor at the moment. Is there an online version of the Graves book?))
Sharon - i got it but haven't read it yet, kim
cavey - Kim, I've been busy!
eilene - Thanks, Grace
Kim/1/Ca - That's the basic, bare bones, essentials, huh, Grace?
Grace/IL - Got it, Kim, but haven't read it yet.
cavey - Sledding, snowballs, lactaction consultant...not at the same time of course
Kim/1/Ca - Where in the HECK is Brad the New Dad?
judy3ca - cavey, he says kids have to write at least 4 days a week.
Kim/1/Ca - You remember my burning question, Grace? Woo hoo....!
judy3ca - what do you guys think of that?
Erin - I have really been trying to keep to that 4 days a week Judy...it is tough
Grace/IL - Hey, what a decodable book, "Brad, the Dad"
cavey - I know Judy, and we do pretty much write everyday, but not for long periods every day
Kim/1/Ca - I agree, judy...........
eilene - does it have to be 4 days a week on a specific type of writing, or can a "fun" free journal prompt be sufficient?
judy3ca - Erin, I'm bound to 4 days because my kids would really raise a ruckus if we didn't do WW--as it is we have to miss one day.
Kim/1/Ca - See plaid clad Brad, the new dad.
Kim/1/Ca - NO PROMPTS eilene. Prompts bad.
Sharon - see his new lad?
judy3ca - ROFL Kim
eilene - Oh, Kim, he's the rad plaid clad Brad, the new dad
Erin - Judy, I would have never believed it, but by keeping to that 4 days my kids love WW also. The speech teacher came in today and was amazed.
eilene - Why are prompts bad?
jodi - We've had several inches of ICE here and have been out of school for the past 2 days.
Erin - She loved the 6 traits I was doing
Kim/1/Ca - Is it a LAD? Have we been HAD?
naneb - my kids love writing now too!! All they had to do was publish once and they were hooked
Sharon - lol!
Erin - Brad is so glad
judy3ca - Erin, that's wonderful! I got some good feedback about WW today, too.
Kim/1/Ca - eilene, eilene, eilene.................where do we begin?
cavey - A lad named Tad!
eilene - (I haven't read the book, so I'm lagging behind)
Kim/1/Ca - Brad is not a sad dad. Brad is not a mad dad. Brad is a glad dad.
Erin - That Brad, what a cad!!
jodi - What is WW?
Kim/1/Ca - Tad? Or Vlad?
judy3ca - Eilene, you might want to do some reading about prompts.
Grace/IL - Brad is not a bad dad
naneb - or maybe chad?
eilene - okay... I'll do some research into that too... but now, I have to go, unfortunately. I'll check it out. Thanks!
judy3ca - bye eilene
Kim/1/Ca - eilene......... try modeling one of your "own" entries for them..........write on the board or overhead. YOu can make errors and think out loud. Connect to life, memories, etc.
judy3ca - Thad
cavey - after election 2000, there will be no more chads
Kim/1/Ca - owe me a coke, judy......THAD.
Kim/1/Ca - Chad bad.
Sharon - oooooooooooo........... tell us!
Grace/IL - eilene, Stallings, (1980) Allocated Academic Learning Time Revisited, or Beyond Time on Task" Educational Reserarcher, Vol. 9(11) p. 11-16
naneb - Yeah!!!!
Kim/1/Ca - (((((((((((((((BRADley kins sweetie pie)))))))))))))))))))
brad - Baby boy born today at 2:14 in the afternoon
Erin - It's Brad, the glad plaid clad dad
Sharon - and hi brad
Erin - We are so glad to see you Brad
cavey - There he is!!! Hey Big Daddy!
judy3ca - I would so love to buy you a Coke, Kim, and then sit down and talk.
Kim/1/Ca - Spill yer guts, buckaroo. Leave out no details.
Erin - YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sharon - awwwwwww!
judy3ca - Congrats, Brad!!!!!!!! How is your wife?
brad - 7 lbs. 8 oz. The exact same weight as my other son
cavey - Yoo HOO!!!
Grace/IL - Congratulations, Brad!! You just missed our decodable book about your son.
Sharon - does the lad look a tad like brad?
naneb - name? weight? length? hair?
brad - 20 inches long, NO NAME YET
Kim/1/Ca - ((<<<grinning ear to ear here)
brad - Wife and baby are fine
jodi - Congrats brad!
brad - Looks like Son Number One
Sharon - shall we name him tonight?
Kim/1/Ca - How about Thad? Chad? Vlad? Tad?
cavey - Well, we've got the names for you!
naneb - :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
brad - Dark black hair that looks like it won't be here long
naneb - shoot
Kim/1/Ca - (best Mr. Burns imitation) Excellent!
naneb - :) :) :)
Grace/IL - Sounds really cute
naneb - wanted a row of smileys
Sadie T - Brad! Congratulations!
Kim/1/Ca - You can call me RAY, or you can call me JAY............
judy3ca - Oh, this is so exciting! I'm sitting here with a big goofy grin on my face.
judy3ca - (((Sadie)))
naneb - me too!!
Sadie T - Can't stay long, but I had to drop by to see if Brad was here with news. Looks like I came at the right time!!
Erin - Hi Sadie
brad - After they took him for tests, pics, and cleanup, he came back wrapped in a stocking that said Happy Holidays. It was so cute
cavey - Hi Sadie!!
Sadie T - Brad, I think you should name him Hunter.
Kim/1/Ca - ME too, Judy.........like I was there or something..........sheesh
Sharon - awwwww-er
judy3ca - Awwwwww!
Erin - Oh that is way too cute
Kim/1/Ca - Was it PLAID, Brad?
naneb - cute, send me a pic and I will put it on the website!!!
brad - LOL Hunter
Erin - Can you post pictures anywhere?
Erin - Kim...he was clad in the stocking
brad - Um, if someone technically inclined could walk me through, I'll post pics
naneb - does the hospital have picturs online?
Kim/1/Ca - Hunter Bradley J-------.
Grace/IL - Chad is a good name
brad - I don't know. I forgot hospitals were doing that now.
judy3ca - Good thing it's not a girl, they'd suggest Mad for Madeline.
naneb - brad, send it to me attached to an email and I will post it on the yahoo site
Sadie T - LOL Judy
brad - Chad is a good name if you're pregnant or hanging
Kim/1/Ca - You are in a room full of women squealing with delight here. You must share our enthusiasm with your wife.
cavey - LOL brad
brad - He has a pretty bruised up face, but was already improving when I left.
Grace/IL - Oh, my, Brad, I forgot about the chads.
Sadie T - LOL Brad
Kim/1/Ca - Did she have a C-Section? Or was it induced?
naneb - new babies are soooo sweet!!
brad - induced
brad - she just wanted that epidural
Kim/1/Ca - drugs good.
cavey - drugs very good!
brad - And he cried like a son of a . . . Caleb was very quiet, with a high pitched squeak for a cry. This one is a full throttle crier
Grace/IL - Maybe his crying was an introduction to the nights ahead. I hope not LOL
cavey - That little guy can cry and cry!
Debbie Ann - hello, looks like baby talk going on here
brad - So I'm Mr. Mom for the weekend
Sharon - considering any names at all?
Grace/IL - Hi Debbie Ann
cavey - My oh my, what a cry!
Kim/1/Ca - Nicholas Bradley J----------. (<<<good name)
naneb - have a son named Nicholas Woodward
Grace/IL - I pick Nick.
Kim/1/Ca - Well, Debbie, we WERE being professional. Then Brad the New Dad arrived.
judy3ca - Just thrilled.... I think I'm going to keep saying that for a while.
Grace/IL - Nick is not sick. Nick can lick.
brad - I like Nicholas, but we're not big fans of naming children after family members around here
naneb - I was thinking about you all day long!! Glad everything went well!
Debbie Ann - Well, can I share news , too. I was nominated by the " Leadership Committee " in my district for PA Teacher of the Year!!! I am thrilled to be nominated.
Sharon - how about something that kind of goes with caleb's name... another "c" name like erm... coleson
Erin - nan, same here. At one point I said "I wonder if Brad had his baby "and the other teachers looked at me like who's brad?
Sharon - wonderful debbie ann!
Kim/1/Ca - Congrats, Debbie Ann! Wow!
brad - Yes, Sharon. That'
Grace/IL - Debbie, I read that on the main board. What an honor.
Sadie T - Debbie Ann, congratuations!
naneb - Cameron
Kim/1/Ca - I thought of that, Sharon......a CH name to go with Chelsey, his daughter.
brad - ere we have been headed. Che'
judy3ca - That's my son's name, LOL.
Kim/1/Ca - Chandler Nicholas J_________.
brad - Che'?
naneb - Chase
judy3ca - LOL, Cameron.
Sharon - well i'm lost... who is caleb???
Erin - Chandler
Debbie Ann - Thanks! Oh - how about Chuck!! LOL
Kim/1/Ca - Not Chase.....too trendy.
brad - I like Chase or Chance; Nichole does not
Sadie T - Yeah, Brad, Che' would be a good name....
naneb - GMTA,Judy
judy3ca - But I was a big Che fan in college--had a huge poster of him on my dorm wall.
naneb - Charles
brad - Caleb is my other son
Sharon - chandler is nice
Debbie Ann - Or Chevy????
naneb - had a dog named Chance
Erin - Not Chance...I have a horrible one this year. I keep giving him "One more chance." LOL
judy3ca - Eeewwww, not Chance--that's romance novel.
brad - Che' Guevara, Judy? You had a poster of HIM?
Kim/1/Ca - Chazz Ephraim J__________.
judy3ca - Surprised, Brad?
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, Che' was a real hottie.
Sadie T - LOL Kim
brad - piano teacher had a dog named Che' and that's just what keeps coming to my mind, though
Sharon - you have TWO others? wow!
judy3ca - (((diane)))
Debbie Ann - Chad rhymes with Brad.....
diane - hi guys!
Sadie T - Hi Diane!
cavey - little d!!
brad - also considering Ethan
Kim/1/Ca - Chip Offdaoldblock J__________.
jakie - room 2
judy3ca - I like Ethan!
Kim/1/Ca - Kinda trendy, Brad..............
brad - 10, 5, and 0 Sharon
diane - thanks for the hug, judy, definitely can use it this week...
diane - oh...are we naming brad's baby??
Sadie T - How funny, Brad - friends of mine have two sons named Caleb and Ethan, too
Kim/1/Ca - You need to listen to us. (Well, maybe not Debbie Ann.)
Sadie T - But I really like Kim's suggestion - Chip Offdaoldblack
Debbie Ann - Nathaniel is nice
judy3ca - yup, diane.
judy3ca - yup, diane.
brad - I know; I hate trendy, Dammit, why am I such a trend setter when I pick these names
Kim/1/Ca - He is not 0. He is a fraction right now.
judy3ca - that's an interesting typo, Sadie
brad - Not the one I had in class last year, Debbie
Kim/1/Ca - LeRoy would go well with your last name, Brad.
Debbie Ann - Jim, Bob, Sam, Tom, Joe, Chuck, what happened to the good ole names???
Grace/IL - Step-grandson is Ethan -- neat young man! I dont' think it's trendy.
brad - Nathaniel would be okay, if they stuck with the full name, hate Nate, Nathan and especially Nat
Sadie T - You're right, Judy, I hadn't seen my typo until you mentioned it.
Debbie Ann - LOL
diane - ewww...chuck?
brad - Kim, my children have their mother's last name
Kim/1/Ca - (((diane)))) yes, we are naming Brad's baby. He is taking copious notes because we have good suggestions.
jakie - exceptional needs chat
judy3ca - Sorry, Sadie, I shouldn't have said anything.
naneb - jakie, it is over
Sadie T - Jakie, this is Professional Reading chat.
Kim/1/Ca - We are the ProfReading chat, jakie.........but we are off on a tangent. One of our members just had a baby.
naneb - this is professional reading, better known as Name That Baby!!
judy3ca - Brad, may I ask why you did that with the last name?
brad - I don't mind explaining, Judy, but it's long story
Sadie T - Judy, (embarrassed about my typo) but my beginners are learning names for colors this week.
Kim/1/Ca - Aw, I missed Sadie's typo. Was it a good one?
judy3ca - Sadie, isn't it amazing how we absorb this stuff?
Erin - brad, judy gave some good tips on summarizing on the board, they may help with the long story. LOL
brad - LOL, Erin
Sadie T - Ha! Kim missed the typo. Proof that we DON'T pay attention to each letter.
judy3ca - Brad, I'd like to hear sometime--not now if you're tired.
cavey - What a typo? That wasn't mine?
naneb - LOL!!!
Grace/IL - She's going to have to redo the typo. I missed it too.
brad - I think it proves Judy was looking at ALL the letters
Sharon - lol sadie!
diane - everytime i think of good names, i am reminded of students that didn't do the name justice
Kim/1/Ca - Yup, you are right, diane..........
judy3ca - diane, very good point about names!
naneb - and she was the only one!! LOL!!
judy3ca - I always love my students named Max.
Sharon - shhhh! don't get me thinking on THAT stuff again... my head hurts from all that do we or don't we see all letters... i'm finished with it! (and no conclusion reached)
brad - Judy, Chelsey is not mine biologically; we began going out when Chelsey was just over a year old
judy3ca - Okay, you guys, I've told you I'm a slow reader, LOL.
Sadie T - Always, Judy? LOL I've never had a student named Max. Maybe I'll ask if I can get one next year.
diane - i had a GREAT max last year
brad - so she already had Nichole's last name
jakie - hey who teaches second grade?
judy3ca - Oh, man, Brad! My daughter is Chelsea.
brad - Then, Nichole and I were married a little over a year when we separated and divorced. A few years later, Nichole wanted to have another baby, so she called me up and asked if I would be the father
diane - brad, i missed it...what do you do with last names?
naneb - I had a dog named Chelsea too, Old english Sheepdog
cavey - okay, i'm missing most of this. babe in arms here
judy3ca - Sharon, my students named Max have been exceptionally interesting.
Erin - LOL nan
naneb - it is true!!
judy3ca - Brad, this is fascinating.....keep going.
Erin - I believe you!!!!
jakie - me too
brad - After much thought and consideration, I agreed. I had no plans of reuniting (and neither did she) so Caleb was going to have Nichole's last name. I didn't want him to be the only one in his house with my last name.
Sadie T - Oh, that's right, cavey. How's "your" baby?
Kim/1/Ca - My old terrier is named Max.
Sadie T - If you can type an answer with baby in arms, that is. LOL
brad - Not to mention--you ladies do all the hard work for nine months, shouldn't you be able to put your name on it?
Grace/IL - Chelsea seems such a delicate name for an old English sheepdog
cavey - Great Sadie!
brad - Plus, my name is not that exciting, being the second most common in the US
naneb - she was delicate for her type!! LOL!!
brad - So it's basically just going with the flow for this third one.
judy3ca - Right, Grace, my daughter Chelsea IS delicate, LOL.
Kim/1/Ca - LOL, Brad..........
naneb - sheepdogs are all hair, the dog underneath is not that big!!
Erin - Very interesting story brad
Sharon - well i can guess what the "j" is that kim refers to now!
diane - ya know, brad, i had a kid named dude last year...might want to consider it
Grace/IL - Brad, that's a really interesting story.
naneb - Ha!!!!
brad - Nichole hyphenated for a while when we first married, but it just became too much and she dropped the hyphenation. We've talked about hyphenating everyone's name in the family, including mine, but it's a lot of paperwork, not to mention teaching your childrren to write those long drawn-out hyphenated last names
brad - Dude?
judy3ca - Wow, Brad, that's pretty dramatic. Thanks.
cavey - Okay, I've missed the whole brad story. Guess I'll wait for the archives
brad - "interesting" is a eupehmism for. . . . ?
Erin - Dude? are you serious
brad - We've been officially married three times
Sadie T - Yes, cavey, you'll have to catch it when the ProfReading chat reruns come out
diane - i am serious...
Grace/IL - Hyphenating is for the birds. I do it professionally but sometimes forget what name I sign where. Labeling kids with two names is a sin! Who wants to do all that writing?
naneb - it would be easy to call him in for supper!! Hey dude!!
Kim/1/Ca - Brad, you are highly regarded here. Interesting is just one of the terms of endearment we have for you.
cavey - Okay, now I know my life is really boring based on what I've caught
diane - i didn't take my husband's name when we married...he's never really understood...has it ever bothered you brad?
brad - It is an interesting story to tell face to face because people are a little embarassed to be witness to something so "modern" OR for whatever reason, people seem uncomfortable that they don't have my name
Erin - I knew my life was boring before I read that
diane - lol, erin
brad - Diane--Initially I thought it would, but in truth, it really hasn't
brad - Does it bother your husband?
judy3ca - ROFL, Erin, and I'm probably even more boring--at least you've had some career changes.
Sadie T - LOL, Erin
diane - brad, i realize that i just asked you if it bothered you that i didn't take my husband's last name...lol
Kim/1/Ca - I took my husband's name because I never really liked the one I was born with. You always have to repeat it. My sister hyphenates and she hyphenates her kids. It looks and sounds silly. Not a good name combination.
Grace/IL - Have a cousin who hyphenates -- 17 letters plus hyphen in last name.
brad - Kim, our correspondence always has our hyphenated names on it if it's whole-family oriented
diane - it did bother him at first...i think he just didn't expect it (which i was surprised by...i guess i thought he would have assumed as much)
judy3ca - I took my husband's name because it's easier and the big plus: it's in the middle of the alphabet. I grew up with the last name Varnado.
Kim/1/Ca - Makes sense.
Erin - People ask why I didn't hyphenate...my maiden name was Irish and my husband is Italian...don't think so
Sadie T - I have an entire class of end-of-alphabet kids this year. The third name on the roster starts with "P". Strange...
Sharon - varnado sounds exotic... try my maiden name... a farm tool... mattocks... ewwww... glad to ditch it
Erin - Good point Judy, I went from end to first letter
brad - Many people mispronounce my childrens' last name and that's the only time it kind of gets on my nerves.
diane - it does confuse the heck out of my students...they definitely don't get it...with students named dude, however, you can tell i'm not in a terribly modern location
judy3ca - Sharon, lol, sounds a little like buttocks, doesn't it?
Erin - I have all beginning of the alphabet names...first 8 kids on roster A or B
Kim/1/Ca - Try mine, Brad..........LOL......
Sharon - lol!
naneb - LOL!!
cavey - Yeah, mine too!
brad - It makes me think of Andy Griffith, Sharon
judy3ca - Oh, Brad, that's nothing, people mispronounced my maiden name and my married name.
Erin - Some people would mispronounce Smith, because they are LAME
Sadie T - Yes, Judy, I can see why they'd mispronounce it - "3ca" is hard to say.
cavey - It does make it easy to spot a telemarketer
brad - LOL, Sadie ROFLMAO
naneb - they are just in my class!!!
diane - lol sadie
judy3ca - ROFLOLOLOL Sadie
Kim/1/Ca - Hey Brad.........Shoppel, my kid who knew 9 letters and ONE sound in Sep.......... decoded a bunch of CVC words today! I shared earlier. I danced around and was quite demonstrative.
brad - Cavey, soon as I hear it mispronounced, click.
Erin - cavey, yeah when they call me Erwin it's a dead giveaway
Grace/IL - I started out with Janssen -- simple but no one could spell it. Funny, funny Sadie! LOL
Kim/1/Ca - You are SO right, cavey!
cavey - sadie, you are bad!
diane - you're right cavey, my husband's last name is french canadian...i always know who to get rid of
Kim/1/Ca - "May I speak to Kimberli Ling....Len....ling lenin ling ging please?"
brad - Interestingly enough, that's how I refer to Judy when I'm reading posts. "Oh there's judy-three-ca"
naneb - I started out with Bott and all the kids said butt so I was glad to get rid of it
cavey - the smart telemarketers just go with the first name
judy3ca - Sadie, I'm still laughing, but you know, once I came here as plain Judy and everyone asked if I was judy3ca.
Sharon - oh gawd... i am soooooo tired... i've been trying to figure out the "3ca" comment by sadie and it just now dawned on me!
Kim/1/Ca - It's Thrika, Sadie, pronounced ThreeKuh.
cavey - It's kind of like C3PO
naneb - LOL!!!
diane - my husband started out life as michael jackson...he was thrilled to get rid of it
Sadie T - LOL, cavey!
naneb - Sharon, we listened to your story this week
judy3ca - I am guffawing.
Grace/IL - diane, I'd change that name too.
Kim/1/Ca - I don't process the "3ca" at all.......I just translate it as Judy. Funny.
naneb - what a great word that is, guffawing!!
brad - Sharon--personal connection to your story
Sharon - ack... that's bad, diane... although my cousin did marry a "billy graham"
judy3ca - diane, how did he get rid of his name?
brad - Well then, you're just more PROFICIENT aren't you KimmY?
Grace/IL - So, we have Kim wunka
Erin - good night all brad, congratulations and all the best. looking forward to pictures and an name
Sadie T - Brad, back to names for your son - how about C3PO?
diane - just went to the courthouse with paperwork...picked an old family name
brad - When I read guffawing, I always think of someone doing it with big buck teeth for some reason
judy3ca - Stick with me, nan, I'm a font of useless words.
naneb - I always think of her as Kim Wunka and Judy as Judy
diane - night erin
Sadie T - LOL, Kim Wunka and Judy Thrika
judy3ca - Night, Erin!
Erin - What happened to my typing? Sorry
brad - thanks erin
naneb - me too!! Brad!!
cavey - Bye Blondie!
Sadie T - Good night, Erin!
Kim/1/Ca - Well, how did you think of me before, when I was Kim/K/SCal?
brad - ok, sharon, do you want to hear personal connection? (all sentimental with new baby and all. My sad a-- cried at Dr. Phil the other day)
Erin - Good night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brad - Kim-Kiss-Cal is how I thought of you
naneb - I said I was not going to stay in here, I need sleep
Sharon - awwwww
Sadie T - Kimks Cal
naneb - this place is addictive
Grace/IL - Kim Casescal???
Kim/1/Ca - Good for you, BRAD! (<<< assing tissues)
Sharon - assing tissues???
naneb - Kissin Kim
Sadie T - Kim.... what was that???
Kim/1/Ca - funny.......Kim Kiss Cal sounds better than Kim Wunka.
Sadie T - LOL
brad - (I was like that after Caleb too. My sad a-- cried when I saw BABE--"that'll do pig, that'll do.")
Kim/1/Ca - I typed P a s s i n g tissues!
diane - my husband just looked at me like i was insane...laughing out loud at the thought of assing tissues
naneb - I love that movie, so picturesque!! and so sweet
Kim/1/Ca - let me try that again.....<<<<<
naneb - and we all believe you Kim!!
diane - brad, i cry at commercials...and i have never had children...
Grace/IL - Kim, you can't kiss Cal -- my first husband, he's deceased!
brad - Anyway, so I was reading Sharon's story. . .
Sadie T - <<
Kim/1/Ca - Discovery Learning, folks!!! YESSSSSSSSSS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sharon - which story???
Sadie T - <
naneb - what story?
Sadie T - P
naneb - did I miss a story?
cavey - I still can't do the faces
Sadie T - That is weird!
brad - No offense, diane, but You are Woman, and this is a new development for me since the onset of children. I'm pretty hard-as-nails
Kim/1/Ca - About Sharon's No good, terrible, horrible, very bad day
diane - no offense taken...i guess
naneb - cavey, click on the red question mark to the left of the screen and scroll all the way down
cavey - It's okay Brad, my hubby cried when he saw the pics of sister's new baby
Sadie T - To do faces type: : - ) without the spaces
judy3ca -
diane - lol, cavey, i can't do them either
Sharon - oh yeah... bummer day... and i forgot to add two other things that happened that night... i opened the car door... hit myself in the head and knocked myself to my knees!
cavey -
Kim/1/Ca - About Sharon's No good, terrible, horrible, very bad day
Sadie T - : - ) without spaces for a smile; : - ( for frown, : - D for big smile
diane - ouch, sharon
judy3ca - I loved Sharon's story!
Sharon - still have a lump there
cavey - How about a smirk?
naneb - just do colon right parenthesis
diane -
Sadie T - and, apparently, > P for this weird whatever it is >
judy3ca - Sharon, I'm so sorry about your head, but I really am ROFLOL.
Sadie T -
brad - I was reading about Sharon's day, and while we all still have them, it struck a chord in me that before, in my life, about six or seven years ago, there was a time when Sharon's day was my Everyday. My life was in constant turmoil. And I went through some issues and some counseling, and came out the other side a better person. Anyway, as I read Sharon's story, I was so thankful I could drop to my knees that those days like that are few and far between now and more fate-oriented than self-induced.
naneb - whaere was this story?
Kim/1/Ca - About Sharon's No good, terrible, horrible, very bad day
Sadie T - Cool, I didn't know you could leave the nose off.
judy3ca - Coo, Brad.
Kim/1/Ca - I just went to Emoticon Hell. So glad to be back. I was lost.
naneb - Where is this story!!!
judy3ca - oops, COOL (baby talk?)
diane - brad, i love that outlook.
Sharon - we won't even go into the second thing i omitted judy... just the words "spastic colon" and "20 minutes from home" will suffice
cavey - Oh Brad, having kids will make you all mushy
Sharon - awwww brad
brad - Which is a much much longer story Judy, but one i'd be happy to tell AT CAVEY'S CABIN THIS SUMMER!! (yeah, baby--yeah!) (doing his best Austin Powers)
judy3ca - Now tears are streaming down my face because of laughter--at least I'm getting stomach exercise.
Kim/1/Ca - Very true, Brad. You have discovered, as most people here have, I suspect, that our locus of control is internal. We are not externally driven.
cavey - I really should post some pics
diane - hey, what's this about cavey's cabin?
brad - Do what? Spastic Colon?? (madly scrolling)
Sharon - lol!!!!!!!!
cavey - Yeah Brad, I know now that you're a much more interesting guest after tonight
Kim/1/Ca - And....... we ARE grateful for our good days, aren't we?
Sharon - i ruined your beautiful t-s connection, brad!
judy3ca - Cavey, I adore you, but your cabin is VERY far away. Any chance for a California get-together?
brad - yes, but you know Kim, ;you think you know that anyway, but when you're deep down in it. . . .
Kim/1/Ca - yup..........I have been living it, believe me. I think you know.
Sadie T - LOL about Brad's ruined t-s connection
Grace/IL - cavey, where IS your cabin?
brad - see cavey, you thought I was all boring synthesis and eye coordination talk
diane - ahem...what's this about cavey's cabin?
cavey - Judy, I adore you too, but California is Very far away
Kim/1/Ca - We can meet at Grace's.
brad - That's what I think. Cali is pretty far for me too. Anyone for Kansas?
Kim/1/Ca - Or in Nawlins at naneb's.
cavey - Well, it's not a cabin, it's a lake house and it's my mom's
Sharon - shoot... i vote for nan's place in mexico
Grace/IL - How about a cabin in northern Wisconsin -- or at my house. I'm definitely centrally located.
brad - I think Nan's is do-able. It was just that Cavey did offer up the place.
Kim/1/Ca - GAWLlly I would love to go to Cavey's Cabin.
cavey - six bedrooms, pool table, big screen, boat, jet ski, FUN, Fun Fun
naneb - Hey!! y'all are comin to visit??
judy3ca - Sharon, since you were so honest....the other day I wore a new pair of shoes all day at work, and about 5:00 I thought, "Hmm, they're a little tight across the top." When I took them off, I thought, "Hmmm, don't remember these socks having white stripes." Turns out I was wearing the cardboard shaping pieces. Fashion statement.
Kim/1/Ca - MEXICO? (<<<<,shuddering)
brad - That's what I mean. Cavey's is big
Grace/IL - Kim wants to come back to the Illinois tollroads anyway. Even Colorado is getting a new tollroad.
Sharon - rofl @ judy!
naneb - I know a beautiful hotel right in the french quarter that is very inexpensive
brad - LOL, Judy, like I've left the paper in the toe before and thought "Why won't my foot get in this?" LOLOLOL
Kim/1/Ca - LOLOLOL Judy and LOLOLOL Grace...............Gawlll those toll roads were stressful.
cavey - Judy ROFLOL
diane - roflmao, judy
Sadie T - LOL, Judy!
Sadie T - Kim, if we go to Mexico I can translate on the toll roads... would that help?
cavey - Grace is centrally located
Grace/IL - No French quarter for me. I walked through there at seven in the morning -- ugh!
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, but can you protect us from all those terrorists?
cavey - I don't have room to pack enough water bottles to take to Mexico
naneb - no terrorists in Cozumel
Kim/1/Ca - Grace IS centrally located.
brad - Grace, you're in Springfield?
naneb - they have bottled water in the rooms
cavey - Talk about spastic colon
diane - grrr....my husband is snoring...
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, if we go to Mexico and drink the water we can BOND over a shared "john" experience................
Grace/IL - Closer to Chicago, Brad, but way out in the boondocks.
Kim/1/Ca - let him snore, diane..................
Sadie T - You guys have no sense of adventure. LOL
brad - Bond? John? Sounds kinky. Think I'll Die Another Day
Grace/IL - Oooh, Kim, no shared johns!
diane - the sad thing is...it's not even 9:00 here...if he's snoring now, i'm in trouble later
Kim/1/Ca - Well, we wouldnt' need READING material, would we?
cavey - Lost again, my sister and her husband just got their initiation into changing a baby boy diaper LOL
brad - Diane, the trouble comes when he starts mumbling in his sleep about you not changing your last name
Grace/IL - Might need that paper for other purposes though
Kim/1/Ca - do you put those nose strips on his nose, diane?
naneb - LOL!! that is a unique experience!!
Kim/1/Ca - LOL Cavey! Had that happen many times.....................
brad - I put first diaper on Baby Boy today
judy3ca - ROFL Brad! I talk in my sleep--surprise!
diane - lol, brad...he does talk in his sleep. he once dreamt he was a bird and started a high-pitched shrieking...bird calls
Grace/IL - Did you get baptized, Brad?
Sharon - lol diane!
Grace/IL - Sprinkled, that is?
Kim/1/Ca - I had both boys C-section. When they pulled Dustin out, my sis walked into the operating room......(she couldn't find us and just walked right in, LOL)........so they pull him out and all she sees from the door is this arc of water. "It's a boy" she yelled.
brad - Is that when you spill your juicy secrets about guided reading, judy? LOL
diane - do those nose strips work, kim?
Kim/1/Ca - i don't know, diane..........nobody complains that I snore.
Sadie T - LOL, Kim!
judy3ca - ROFL Kim!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and I had 2 c-sections, too)
brad - no sprinkling here. I also cut the cord. This was the first one I was present in the room for
Kim/1/Ca - How is THAT....cutting the cord? Is it hard to cut?
Grace/IL - Wait till someone reads the archives of this professional meeting LOL LOL LOL
brad - (Judy in her sleep) Mumble mumble, inference, mumble, mumble, does that make sense. . .
judy3ca - True story about talking in my sleep: when my husband and I were first married (my first year teaching), he woke me up in the middle of the night demanding, "Who's Arthur?" I had to explain that he was a very troublesome boy in my class.
Kim/1/Ca - We are building background information, Grace.
Sharon - lol judy!
brad - Cutting cord is like cutting gristle
cavey - LOL Judy
judy3ca - ewwww
diane - now, arthur's quite a name
naneb - what a sensory image!!
brad - I didn't know it would take that much pressure and it just slid off the first time. Second cut made it though
Kim/1/Ca - Hmmm......... what do you use to cut the cord?
judy3ca - diane, lol, I KNEW someone would comment on that
brad - oddly shaped very sharp scissors
judy3ca - ewwww
Kim/1/Ca - Arthur is an Armadillo. Ar ar ar ar. He gargles in the park.
Sadie T - I could NOT do that.... have the baby, sure, but...
brad - I suppose it could happen that I could mumble Arthur in my sleep, along with DW, Buster and the rest of the gang
Grace/IL - I love Arthur.
Kim/1/Ca - Who here did I forward the "Denial of Transportation" eMail to?
brad - Kim-- I pahked the cah in Hahvahd Yahd
naneb - I am going to take some nyquil and go to bed!! talk to you all later, Brad, congratulations!! Give him a kiss for me!!
cavey - I got it Kim
Sadie T - If that's what Judy was mumbling - "I love Arthur" - I can understand her husband's reaction
diane - my niece cut the cord when her sister was born...moving
Sharon - bye nan... hope you feel better soon
Kim/1/Ca - Bye naneb....
brad - Nyquil--good drugs
naneb - thanks
Sadie T - Good night Nan!!
diane - night nan
Sadie T - What is the "Denial of Transportation" email?
Grace/IL - Sent it to me, Kim. Really stupid on their part. Something like American airlines leaving a message on our home telephone that our homebound flight from Denver was cancelled.
cavey - bye nan
Kim/1/Ca - I sent it to you Sadie.......but it came back. I think I made a mistake with your address.
Grace/IL - 'Night, naneb
brad - I thought I would be all grossed out cause I hate those Baby Stories on TLC and seeing the surgery on ER, but amazingly I was not.
judy3ca - Night, nan, hope you feel betterQ
Sadie T - Kim, you have to look at every letter in my email address. LOL
Kim/1/Ca - The sad part was when I eMailed her back to tell her she was "killin' me here" she still didn't get it.
Sadie T - because it's "sdaie" not "sadie"
judy3ca - speaking of every letterQ
cavey - that is such an interesting thread
judy3ca - Oh, light bulb, Sadie, is that why you call yourself sadie?
Kim/1/Ca - at aol, right?
Sadie T - shhhhh, don't tell. LOL. Yes.
judy3ca - Aha!!!!!!
Sadie T - No, Kim, not AOL. I will post a link on the board or email you.
brad - Is Sadie an alias??
Grace/IL - Let's all email Sadie! Let's all email Sadie! La, la, la, la, la, la
cavey - No way, Sadie is a cool name!
judy3ca - Brad cuts to the chase.
Grace/IL - Oh, shoot, it's not aol.
Sadie T - LOL Grace!
Kim/1/Ca - tha'ts the problem............i added too many addresses at once. i kept the eMail and will forward it to you. it is a hoot.
judy3ca - Well, ummmm, cavey, is that not an alias?
Kim/1/Ca - Here I pictured this nice little Jewish lady in northern CA
cavey - What do you mean Judy?
brad - I have no secrets!! (especially after tonight's archives are posted)
diane - lol, judy, i was thinking the same thing!!
Sadie T - Grace, you can email me too, I'll post a link on the board. I just don't want to post it here because I don't want it in the archives. But anyone can use it - check the board.
diane - how did you pick your name, cavey?
Sharon - can't be arsed with an alias here... besides it would be one more thing to remember and my brain is fried already
judy3ca - cavey, I'm teasing....I meant, oh shoot, is cavey your real name, but I need to shut up.....sorry.
brad - I like calling you Sadie. We used to called my cousin/sister Sadie (and thus Sade) because of A Sadie Hawkins Dance she went to.
cavey - You don't believe my mama named me cavey
Sadie T - "nice little Jewish lady" LOL
Grace/IL - I had an aunt Sadie.
Kim/1/Ca - yes, Cavey.........short for LaCavia.
diane - i've always assumed that cavey came from guinea pigs...aren't they known as cavies?...
judy3ca - Brad, your family really is complicated....what's a cousin/sister?
brad - so remind me of that time period. I used to alias, but then I started feeling like you sharon. Who cares?
diane - hope i'm not offending you
Sharon - i did too, grace
Kim/1/Ca - same here......
Grace/IL - She wasn't Jewish. The name was a translation from some German name.
judy3ca - me too, brad and sharon, I had an alias in the beginning.
Sharon - and she had a sister named Cbell (prounounced sea bell)... now there's a name for you... anyone need an alias?
cavey - Should I come out of the closet?
brad - She's really my cousin. She's an only child who lived with my grandmother. We hung out a lot growing up and she came down every time my bro and sis did (another story I'll share at cabin. LOL) So she's like a sister to me. She's the one I went to cali with in 96
brad - I love CBell
judy3ca - I don't know, cavey....would it be like learning I'm not a brunette?
Kim/1/Ca - It's quite a plunge, cavey.......... here I thought you came from a place famous for bat caves.
cavey - It might be Judy, your schema would be really ruined
Kim/1/Ca - You're NOT a brunette?
Grace/IL - I know a lady in CA named CleoBelle
brad - I was thinking Captain Caveman but then again I am a little younger than y'all
Sunny325 - Hi room...TGIF
judy3ca - That was very tactful Brad.
Sadie T - Bat caves, yes, must be bat caves full of guinea pigs
Sharon - judy... i was bending down getting some papers the other day and one of my little boys said, "Oh no, Mrs. Elder... you've got white stuff all in your hair!" Time for a coloring, I'd say!
diane - yeah...i do enjoy thinking of you as a guinea pig fanatic, cavey
Sadie T - Hi Sunny325
Kim/1/Ca - Back atcha, Sunny
judy3ca - Sharon, LOLOLOL.
Kim/1/Ca - LOL Sharon..............
Grace/IL - Hi Sunny
Sadie T - LOL Sharon!
cavey - Oh little d, I'm really not. Didn't even know that
brad - Sharon, My kids say, "Mr. Johnson, how come some of your beard is another color?" LOL
Sharon - lol brad!
diane - i'm so sad...it was such a quirky notion
Grace/IL - Can't hide the facts, can you, Sharon?
Kim/1/Ca - You have a BEARD, Brad? My schema is all shot to heck...............
brad - It's a goat
cavey - brad, you do not have a beard!
Kim/1/Ca - I picture you, Brad, as balding, once-blond.................
Sharon - you know you're getting old when your kids don't slip and call you mama... they slip and call you "nana" instead
judy3ca - beard???????
cavey - Okay, a goat I can believe.
Grace/IL - Why did I know he had a beard?
judy3ca - Ouch, Sharon, I haven't had that happen yet.
brad - I know you are not serious KIM about your SI on me
Sadie T - Well... I am less than ten years older than some of my students, and they call me "mom" sometimes! So I'm not sure how much they think about age...
Kim/1/Ca - Yeah, ouch..........
brad - Being in primary, (and many with no father at home) Mine call me mom all the time (or should I say Mines call me mom
Sharon - lol brad!
Sadie T - LOL Brad!
judy3ca - Sadie, you're a baby!
Kim/1/Ca - Mines call me mom or TEACHER............
Grace/IL - Brad's the bearded lady called Mom.
cavey - Okay Sadie is a baby too?
Sharon - sadie... my si of you is sure shot to heck with that comment!
brad - It's getting so bad. This year's crew is so much more grammatically challenged and it's rubbing off. I actually said, "That's mines" at home the other day!!
Kim/1/Ca - Dang.......Sadie is in her twenties? Shoot...................a baby, indeed.
diane - lol, brad
Sadie T - I do have 18-year-old students though. Does that help?
Sharon - you did not!!!!
Sharon - sadie... NO!
Kim/1/Ca - NO YOU DID NOT.............quick yanking our chains.
Kim/1/Ca - (Brad has a beard?)
judy3ca - I taught at a 'mines' school for 10 years. Now I'm in heaven where the biggest challenge is 'me and Sharon read the book.'
Sadie T - ROFLOL
brad - I did, and I looked right at Nichole and said, "Did I just say MINES?" She said she didn't know. I guess she wasn't paying attention to every letter.
diane - wow, sadie, i somehow thought i was the baby of the group...all that lack of carol burnett schema of mine
Kim/1/Ca - (Sharon has white in her hair? Sadie is 27 years old?)
brad - LOL< lack of carol burnett schema truly ROFL
Sharon - *cringe* NO MORE EVERY LETTER.... can't take it anymore!
Kim/1/Ca - At least I have GRACE straight in my schema.
diane - not that i thought i was that much younger, mind you...
Sharon - kim... i'm 45 and i've earned every last gol-darned one of those white hairs!
cavey - I have seen Grace in the newsletter
brad - Actually even though I've seen PICTURES of Ms. Grace, I still get her confused mentally with my student teaching supervisor
Kim/1/Ca - But Sharon........I wanted to digest the thread and post a copious, verbocious response for you to ruminate upon...........
Sadie T - Almost *literally* ROFLOL at Sharon's "no more every letter"!!
cavey - Yeah, me too Sharon, what Kim said
brad - Kim, I think the California sun has got to your mind, because I can't believe you thought I was blond
Sharon - oh lawd! just what i need... more ruminating
Kim/1/Ca - (stepping slowly away from Sharon and her well-earned white hairs)
cavey - Yeah Kim, even i could tell brad wasn't blond
brad - Don't I SOUND brunette??
judy3ca - Brad, I think you're a sandy dark blond, too.
Sadie T - schema totally messed up here!!!
Kim/1/Ca - with a receding hairline even..........
diane - don't pick on kim...
cavey - yeah, she's too old to pick on
Grace/IL - Brad, you mean your student teaching supervisor is THAT old?
brad - why on earth?? rofl
Kim/1/Ca - WHAT was that Ms. CAVEY?
brad - She was retired school teacher. My university usually has outsiders play that role. Each staff member usually only had two or three candidates they supervised. They liked giving us someone more local
judy3ca - Brad, if we're laying it on the line here, I also imagine you as a pretty big guy.
cavey - what, you mean my Kim schema is wrong?
Kim/1/Ca - I dont' honestly know............it is funny how we manufacture these images.
Kim/1/Ca - OLD?
Kim/1/Ca - <<<<
brad - big as in fat?
zxc - hi everyone
Sadie T - Hi, zxc
brad - Kim, if we're going to bust schema virginity herre tonight, is your hair curly?
diane - kim...i picture you in your mid 30's
cavey - it's getting touchy in here!
Sharon - really judy... i picture him completely opposite
cavey - Hi ZXC
cavey - Hi ZXC
cavey - Hi ZXC
judy3ca - I have definite images of some of you---others are harder. I always imagined Sadie as young. Kim, do you have short hair?
cavey - Hi zxc
Sadie T - Kim does NOT have curly hair!
zxc - hi everyone
cavey - Sorry, not my computer
Kim/1/Ca - No, around 5'10 or so....... dockers and buttons downs or polo shirts, loafers or oxfords, occasionally a pair of Nikes.
diane - hi zxc
judy3ca - Well, not fat, just big. I think it's all that talk about salad in a bag.
Kim/1/Ca - Thank you, diane.........(sniff)
brad - LOL, salad in a bag. Forgot we had that talk
zxc - hi cavey
cavey - OOh, Judy, do me!
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Judy......short hair, brown but streaked. WEAVED, I should say.
brad - Wait a minute, who's 5 10 with polos and Nikes?
diane - be honest...it's all the ho-ho's
brad - Joo' got a weave, Ms. Lightning?
judy3ca - cavey, I already told you that I pictured you with wavy red hair==wrong! I see you as petite and smiling.
Kim/1/Ca - cavey is blonde and 30ish.....slender, petite, wears a lot of L.L. Bean
cavey - No Kim, that's not you. All you California people are blond
judy3ca - Phew, I got Kim's hair right.
brad - KIm, that's my pic of cavey too
Kim/1/Ca - yup......weaves cover a multitude of sins, Mr. J......
Sadie T - Kim, the 5'10 and dockers... you're describing you, or Brad? LOL
Kim/1/Ca - I was blond until I was five years old. WEnt darker and darker............
judy3ca - well, cavey, how did we do?
diane - oh...i have always pictured cavey much older...must have been that guinea pig obsession...lol...
Grace/IL - Kim's the blue jeans type -- slim and trim.
Kim/1/Ca - BRAD, Sadie......LOL
judy3ca - Yes, Kim, I'm only blonde if you've known me a while.
diane - sadie, i thought she was describing herself as well...
brad - wait, I"M 5 10 with Dockers??
Kim/1/Ca - Now Judy is ................ brunette, wavy hair, shoulder length.......wears slacks and vests.
cavey - Oh I love you people, you're all wrong, but I love you for it
Kim/1/Ca - Yes you.......I am only 5'4"
judy3ca - Vests??????????????
brad - okay, well that fits with my Kim schema now
diane - cavey...so i have to venture a guess that you're in your late 40's???? it's that trouble with keeping up with the text
judy3ca - I do wear slacks (not big on dresses).
brad - You know, Judy, Vests with applique of school buses and ABC"s
judy3ca - EWWWWW
diane - ouch, brad, no need to get nasty
Grace/IL - It's late in the midwest. Why do I always have to poop out of this party? 'Night all.
Sadie T - ROFLOL
judy3ca - My daughter smirks at 'teacher clothes.' I don't much like them either.
Sadie T - Good night, Grace
cavey - diane, I'm 38 which I know to someone your age seems like late 40's
brad - night grace. got your email. will respond later
diane - night grace
Kim/1/Ca - Now Grace is young and svelte, favors willowly dresses and her hair done up in French braids.
Sharon - i was thinking the same thing about you brad... vests with school buses and abc's
cavey - goodnight gracie!
zxc - i just asked a simple question dont assume that i cant discuss the issues too
brad - sharon, yes I often forgo the dockers and Nikes (??) for the denim jumpers, remember??
diane - cavey, you're only 6 years older than me...
Clap Twice for Mice! - Hey sharon!
Grace/IL - I'm glad I hung around for t hat one, Kim. Svelte is really a good word!
Sharon - did i clap twice?
judy3ca - I hope I didn't offend anyone. There are some wonderful teachers at my school who are great friends and they wear that....crap.
Sharon - hi mice!
Kim/1/Ca - Well, you have Nikes if they were on sale, Brad...........Adidas are fine too.
Clap Twice for Mice! - Do you have mice?
brad - I love the word svelte (you didn't hear me clap, did you sharon?)
Kim/1/Ca - How did a mouse get in here?
brad - I have one here next to my keyboard, do I get to clap??
cavey - Judy, you are so funny!
Kim/1/Ca - Only when it is time to feed my boa.
diane - i have no mouse...guess i am applause free
brad - LOL--on sale!! I hear those chickens again. (A man has to be frugal with 3 small childrern)
cavey - Okay Kim, you're kidding now! Aren't you?
Kim/1/Ca - One of our first grade rooms has a mouse that just TORTURES the teachers. He runs in and out and just disrupts teaching.
brad - Sharon, I have to remember your picture. Are you the one who someone's sneaking up behind you? LOL
Kim/1/Ca - No Cavey...... I have a Rosy Boa. Her name is Rosie. She is 6 years old. She is a beloved pet.
Sadie T - You mean an uninvited mouse, Kim?
Sharon - well... we could be reading that wrong... clap twice for mice ... clap may NOT be a verb for this one
Sadie T - Kim, couldn't you just let Rosie the Boa out to catch the mouse?
Kim/1/Ca - Yes, Sadie. I offered to bring Rosie in for a few days. They were underwhelmed.
judy3ca - ROFL Sharon, I was thinking the same thing.
cavey - and had the nerve to steal little d's color
Kim/1/Ca - So......guess who is in charge of the holiday program?
Sadie T - Okay, so back to Rosie the Boa....
brad - Why is D, little D? is she into rap now?
Kim/1/Ca - So......guess who is in charge of the holiday program?
Sadie T - You are in charge of the holiday program?
cavey - the same reason, you're little b and I'm little c
diane - what's weird about this little d is that i have always been little diane in my family...my older brother married a diane...she's big diane, i'm little diane
Kim/1/Ca - Sorry.......screen froze up after I eMailed Kathleen.........
cavey - see, I'm psychic
diane - oh...that and my hip hop career on the side
Sharon - hello from sharon's son...just got in from a movie---the ring
diane - we need a little a
brad - how's that working out for you, diane
Sharon - sorry... son did that one
Sadie T - Thanks for doing that, Kim
brad - We have a little a. Just reported to Kathleen
Sadie T - and Judy
Kim/1/Ca - Yes............ like I needed one more thing. But I have the teachers involved convinced that we should put on our robes and belt out "We Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" at the end................
diane - ewww...that "little a" comment looked bad after i typed it
Sadie T - LOL Brad!
Kim/1/Ca - Was the movie good,
Kim/1/Ca - of Sharon?
brad - ANd why are they convinced of this, oh wise involved one?
Kim/1/Ca - try again. Was the movie good, Son of Sharon?
Sharon - he says it was a little too scary... and that means a lot too scary if he says it... he said it was "freaky weird"
Kim/1/Ca - You noticed my heightened involvement, Brad. Very observant. Yes.......they will do it. Should be hoot.
brad - brb thirsty don't leave Kim, I need to hear all about your juicy holiday program
Kim/1/Ca - The cavalry has arrived........I think we scared the little jerk away, Bob. (Can we say JERK in here?)
diane - judy, you've always been cool...even in those appliqued vests
brad - LOL, I tried to type c-o-c-ked to a Victrola
judy3ca - diane, why do those vests scare me so much?
Sharon - i was wondering, brad... lol!
Sadie T - Yes, thank you! Gives us the chance to have these truly professional discussions like tonight.
diane - well...the word dowdy comes to mind
Sadie T - Good night, everyone - Kim Wunka, Sharon of the White Hair, Brad the New Dad, Cavey And Her Guinea Pigs, Little Diane, and Judy Threeka.
brad - who has dowdy schema?
judy3ca - Dowdy, that's it....I want to be sleek and svelte and charming. ROFL.
Sharon - sadie... wait!!!!!
brad - Judy, you're sleek
judy3ca - Night, Sadie!
Kim/1/Ca - (((((((((Sadie)))))))))))
cavey - bye sadie
Sharon - for the record... the hair is no longer white and i'm out 75 bucks
Sharon -
cavey - what did I miss, I was doing baby help
diane - judy, i always picture you as trim and athletic...almost wiry
brad - Sadie? Are you off to fix that pocket you carry your standards in?
judy3ca - Brad, you charmer, I have a way to go to be sleek.
Sadie T - Thanks for clarifying that, Sharon, my schema has been restored. Good night!
brad - salad in a bag, judy, salad in a bag. That's all I'm saying
judy3ca - ROFL, Brad.
cavey - It's okay Judy, it's cyberspace,if I'm petite, you're sleek
judy3ca - Good, now I'm happy.
brad - suddenly where once was flat, now is love handles. Salad in a bag
judy3ca - Of course, I'm almost always happy.
Sharon - wait... i'm a cheerleader stripper and model
Sharon - how much do you benchpress brad in the cyber world?
brad - well, then, amazingly I am blond (think Brad Pitt)
Kim/1/Ca - Hey, I worked with a gal at Chapman Univ for awhile who said that she knew Bob. That he started T-net in his garage in the bay area.
cavey - remember, I have buns of steel in cyberspace
diane - lol, in the cyberworld i look like halle berry
judy3ca - I thought he was from Southern CA.
Sharon - i'd be happy just to have buns again, cavey
cavey - not like mine you wouldn't sharon
Kim/1/Ca - I don't know..........maybe the south bay area, by Jan..........LOL
Kim/1/Ca - I think he is a retired teacher. I think. But what do I know...............I still can't believe you have a beard.
brad - ROFLMAO
cavey - Love it Judy!!
sleekjudy3ca - Kim, ROFL, I think he's young.
Sharon - i LIKE it, judy!
brad - Not a beard, Kimberly Ann, a goat
Kim/1/Ca - That look becomes you, Judy.
diane - you crack me up judy
brad - Judy is quite humorous tonight
Kim/1/Ca - sorry...........now i get it. sheesh.
cavey - my husband has a goat and we live in VA!
diane - blue is a slimming color
Kim/1/Ca - I keep picturing you guys with goats in your backyard.
brad - so, Kim, you didn't protest the great robe-wearing Kissing Santa Claus Spectacular?
cavey - no guinea pigs, remember
Kim/1/Ca - (<<<shuffling around) Uh, no............ why.................?
sleekjudy3ca - Well, as much fun as this has been, you have put a serious dent in my reading-for-pleasure time....and I've just started a book with amazing language. Oh, pooh, speaking of amazing language, has anyone read Wingwalker by Rosemary Wells? I'm doing it as a read aloud--and just about faint over the language. We loved (not: we took off) "We left the earth."
Kim/1/Ca - THANKS Judy..........$$$$$$$$$$
sleekjudy3ca - Anyway, goodnight.
diane - haven't seen it, judy
cavey - I love Rosemary Wells
Sharon - night judy....sleep sweet
cavey - Goodnight Slim
brad - what book has amazing language that you're reading? (not wingwalker
diane - night judy threka
Kim/1/Ca - She be gone, Brad.............
diane - brad, i was curious too
Kim/1/Ca - Pat Conroy, Prince of Tides............amazing language
brad - My hands still smell a little like baby
Sharon - I be gone too?
brad - <-----crazed nut smelling his hands
Kim/1/Ca - No be gone, Sharon............
brad - no sharon don't be gone (love Prince of Tides, definitely top five)
Kim/1/Ca - Awwww.........
Sharon - kim... don't know WHY i just thought of this....
Kim/1/Ca - Baby Boy needs a name.
cavey - stay stay don't go away all your friends still want to play
brad - Amend that: top three
Sharon - but we have this stuff that you spray at school to remove urine odor... Pee Eliminator.... I kid you not.... but i want them to re-name it.... @#$% off.... isn't that catchier?
brad - LOL, Sharon (why did you think of that?)
diane - rofl sharon
Sharon - p i s s off... that's my name
Kim/1/Ca - LOL Sharon............(clutching sides here)
cavey - definite marketing possibilities there sharon
Sharon - you can pee but you cannot @#$% here (said in a haughty voice)
brad - A week with you people; I hope Cavey's cabin has plenty of floor, cuz we'll all be there RO it
Kim/1/Ca - My boys are named Daniel and Dustin. Feel free..................
Sharon - i bet it would sell... P i s s off... removes those stubborn urine smells
cavey - sharon, we've told you about that drinking after midnight
Sharon - i dunno WHY i thought of it brad... i think i hurt my brain in that last thread
Kim/1/Ca - Nice strong names, not trendy........classic. But not overdone.
brad - Sharon, I love that you stirrred up the Janster this past week
Kim/1/Ca - Yessiree, Dr. Sharon.....................hoo boy.
brad - That's why I like my own name, Kim
Kim/1/Ca - My dad named me. He was reading Kipling at the time.
Sharon - well... i'm out on a limb by myself with my thoughts on that one i'm afraid
brad - I was a little upset to learn Jan preferred wine and cookies to me. ;-(
eilene - Congratulations Brad!!
Sharon - no one's coming to my rescue... even brad turned on me!
brad - Thank you eilene
Kim/1/Ca - I would be offended, Brad. Truly.
diane - hi eilene
brad - when did i turn? Is there more on the thread?
cavey - Sorry brad, but I prefer wine and cookies to you too
brad - OOH, double whammy
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon, baby......I am with you. What is the argument again?
Sharon - you said that readers DO NOT see every letter
diane - sharon...i haven't read much of the board lately...i'll have to read and see if i agree...with whatever it is
Sharon - *sniffle sniffle* hurt my feelings....
Sharon - *bottom lip trembling"
Kim/1/Ca - Did i NOT post a response agreeing with you??????????????????????????
eilene - oh, dear. some interesting developments I see
cavey - I don't think there is a definitive answer until the human brain is completely understood
diane - oh...actually sharon...i'm afraid i won't agree...i don't think readers do see every letter
Sharon - yrd you fif kim... snf yhsn you brty muvh
Kim/1/Ca - (slap, slap!) Snap out of it!
Sharon - ooops.... wrong finger placement
brad - Honestly, I think they DO see every letter, just not individually. I think they see it as chunks of letter sequences when they are more proficient. Isn't that what the phases would say?
Kim/1/Ca - oydplsu . djsptm
Sharon - one too many coronas
Sharon - well yes, brad.. i think that too
Kim/1/Ca - But Brad.............think about TYPOS and how much the p i s s you off!
brad - Then what's the other side of the argument. Maybe that's what I'm not getting
Sharon - but the point is that they're not sampling parts of words... that they do see every letter
eilene - but are the typos annoying because the "whole" looks different?
Kim/1/Ca - .....amd s[e;;omg errors drve you nuts!
Sharon - that they skip letters
brad - okay, in the word elephant, I'm saying a proficient reader may see EL and then E and then PHANT. Aren't you?
cavey - uh oh here we go
Kim/1/Ca - You just process so fast you don't realize you are acccounting for eveyr letter.
Sharon - yes
brad - And they're saying???
Sharon - KIM.... I LOVE YOU
diane - so explain typos that people don't catch...just the brain noticing and choosing to ignore??
Kim/1/Ca - elephant. those not processing every letter are making syntactic or semantic errors.
Sharon - that we skip letters... that we sample only some of the letters
brad - See, Kim, this is why I wanted you to add to the thread. I knew working with K and 1, you would see this.
Kim/1/Ca - yes.......because the words are so consolidated and you are sooo focused upon the meaning.
brad - I think a lot of reading instruction is not accounting so much for where beginning readers ARE so much as jumping ahead to where we want them to BE and I think we're going to wind up with the same struggling readers we always have
Sharon - anyway, the new pressley book i just got seems interesting enough... and has lots on our earlier talk about context for word decoding
brad - Even though the instruction is solid and research-based
Kim/1/Ca - did you see my post about context...............to sadie?
Sharon - his view is that whole language may be beneficial to kindergartners but not for firsties
brad - I'm sorry, but in the beginning, we should be teaching them to attend to each letter as much as possible. It's about cracking the code until they're in that full alphabaetic stage.
brad - In other words, maybe we should hold off on word families until late second grade.
Sharon - yes, kim... but i'd need to go back and refresh my memory
brad - Sharon, that's interesting. I'd have to know his definition of whole language though to agree or disagree
Sharon - *snapping her fingers and whipping them in a Z shape*.... you go, brad!
Sharon - brad... i think we can't make a general call like that
Kim/1/Ca - I would agree.........the whole language format does not forego phonics....................you just keep it embedded in context and relate to the child's world. You are bulidng the background information for further, formal instruction.
cavey - how many coronas?
brad - Sharon, after you emailed me this stuff and I started reading it, a light clicked on why the four blocks phonics is bothering me this year. I'm not sure it's appropriate. IT assumes my kids are already full alphabetic, adn they're not.
Sharon - he did say that the whole language style tends to not work well with children that are weak in phonemic awareness
cavey - I think whole language got a bad name because teachers completely swung to no phonics instruction as a backlash
brad - cavey, I agree. Complettely misinterpreted
Sharon - y'all should get this book and read it with us on the yahoo site
diane - you're right cavey
Kim/1/Ca - YES................p.a. so crucial. A good balance is essential and my view of whole language is that it tends to be very balanced.................but weak in word work for many children. Hence, the balanced approach.
Sharon - this first chapter talks alot about whole language... good and bad and how it is defined
brad - four blocks phonics plays a lot with rhymes and word families, which was great in third, but not quite working for my struggling seconds. grace's program hopefully is clicking more
cavey - I'm not sure we ever did it the right way in the states
brad - is this Reading Instruction That Works, Sharon?
Sharon - yes, brad... 2nd edition
cavey - it seems that finally the balance is being restored
Kim/1/Ca - True CAvey..........CA totally misinterpreted it..............ruined it for everyone else.
brad - Kim, I know you've told me how you instruct some in phonemic awareness. How do you deal with it Sharon?
cavey - yes, you bellweather people
brad - cavey, that's why I've always liked four blocks. The balance is there
Kim/1/Ca - It is not US. It is the politicians.
brad - It's slapdash haphazard staff development, really, Kim
Sharon - most of my kids are pretty well developed according to the assessments I did, brad... but i do a lot throughout the day... like at calendar... we make "funny" names for the days of the week... deleting phonemes, substitution phonemes, switching phonemes... just play type
Kim/1/Ca - Today, I started playing with the vowels in their names when I put up the helper's names............got some of them to thinkin'...........medial vowels tricky for some
brad - What about "Clap when you hear the "o" sound?" Stuff like that?
Kim/1/Ca - Narda, Norda, Nirda, Nerda, Nurda
Sharon - some of that too, brad
diane - i'm fading fast you guys...have to go hit the nyquil myself...
Kim/1/Ca - thumbs up if you hear the o sound, down if you do not..............
brad - Now how do you "map" that to the letter?
Kim/1/Ca - hear you diane.....................zzzzz
brad - I'm pretty jazzed, natch
Sharon - the sound to the letter?
brad - yes
diane - big congratulations brad!!! sniff your baby for me...
brad - is everyone ill hitting the nyquil or are we just a board of addicts?
Sharon - if i'm working on phonemic awareness i keep the letters out of it
Kim/1/Ca - No Nyquil for me (knock on wood)
brad - yes, but eventually you have to bring them in Sharon
Sharon - i just deal with the sounds and segmenting the sounds and manipulating the sounds'
diane - well...the nyquil brings me down from the crack...no...really i have a nasty cold
brad - arrrrgh! why don't the firsties teach that in my building. ARRGGH
Kim/1/Ca - Oh yes, Sharon...............I was just responding to his question. "clap" or thumbs up is really phonics thing
cavey - me either, except for the pill, i'm drug free
Kim/1/Ca - TMI Cavey! TMI! (hands over ears)
Sharon - what do they teach, brad?
brad - who knows? Look-say, I think
brad - some word families
cavey - but it's not really me,it's cavey
brad - they're a bunch of basal-followers, I know
Kim/1/Ca - oh geez.............no WONDER they come to you and they cn't read!
brad - and then they hit the wall in third
Sharon - i read in pressley's book tonight that kids that are having trouble blending are probably weak in phonemic awareness... i think i've read that a dozen times lately
brad - the good readers in my class come from the best homes, no doubt
brad - That's something I can't comprehend, Sharon. How can you be weak in phonemic awareness. Unless you have a hearing disability, how can you TRULY not hear a sound
Kim/1/Ca - I had a teacher tell me that she "couldn't afford" the time to teach her kids a holiday song. I said that song lyrics make excellent shared reading materials, vocabulary instruction opportunities, etc. She responded that she HAD to read out of the social studies book or the basal. "That's what I was told."
Kim/1/Ca - Possolutely, absitively, sharon.
brad - oh, sheesh, Kim. (the sad thing is, she probably was)
Sharon - pressley says SES is a factor, brad
brad - how???
Kim/1/Ca - big factor.............
Kim/1/Ca - You can be weak if you lack the experiences. It has nothing to do with hearing. It is discernement of the sounds and the ability to manipulate them.
Sharon - well for one... let's look at HOW some talk...it's almost incoherent for me
brad - I agree with the manipulation (big vacant looks on their faces if I ask them to blend the sounds) but . . .
brad - okay, the light is dawning there sharon
Kim/1/Ca - consider the chinese language.............it is very tonal. Your anglo "ears" can "hear" the tones well enough to speak it fluently, unless you learned it as a child.
brad - Im starting to think I'm going to have to get downright pedantic and talk about mouth position if I stay in primary in this building
Sharon - good... i sure didn't want to go down that road much further, brad
Kim/1/Ca - can't hear...............sorry.
brad - why not, Sharon? It's helpful
eilene - still here... and brad, I do occasionally talk about mouth position
brad - And this is why I think reading instruction for so many fail. Thank god, I stay up on current research and reading because I NEVER LEARNED THIS IN COLLEGE
Kim/1/Ca - reading is also language based...............without adequate language, decoding letters don't sound like much...........
Sharon - me either in undergrad...but I'm loving grad classes
brad - I learned the politics of whole language vs. phonics., the different approaches. Lots of blah blah blah about development, but nothing of value
Kim/1/Ca - same
eilene - am jealous sharon... haven't gotten into the grad classes yet...
Sharon - i read as much outside of class assignments as i do for them, too... i just find it all fascinating
brad - IF I remained like many do stuck teahcing what I learned in college I'd be floundering, probably look say and boring worksheets cause that's what I grew up on
Kim/1/Ca - same here, sharon
brad - It just makes me so much better of a diagnostician Sharon
eilene - I feel that I don't know WHERE to go to read these articles. There's very little colleague support at my school
brad - I really know how to respond to needs more and more
brad - that's why I came here, Eilene. I was just thinking the other day how I first came to this board
Sharon - i'm really itching to get into chapter 2 of pressley... he deals in more depth with eye movements and other items of interest
Kim/1/Ca - Reading TEacher. www.readingonline.org; www.ciera.org
Kim/1/Ca - My Routman book is in route, finally.....................her latest.
Sharon - are you on the email ring for reading teacher, kim?
eilene - I resent how my undergrad program sent me out with grand ideas of changing the world, without the tools to do so. It wasn't until I talked to a veteran teacher who told me the old but true (?) adage "it takes five years to make a teacher."
terry - Hi
Kim/1/Ca - Brad..............have you tried the Yopp Singer?
Sharon - pressley has lots to say about routman, too
brad - I've always went way out of my way on my professional reading (with the bank account to show it) but I've learned so much just from the people and the research I'm dirrected to on this board
Kim/1/Ca - no..........get it by mail. should i be?
Sharon - i used the yopp singer this year as part of my assessment
Kim/1/Ca - good?bad?
Sharon - both, kim
eilene - Thanks, Kim. duly noted
Sharon - he respects her
brad - eilene, same here on my undergrad. And I'm becoming more and more comfortable with telling myself, It's only your second year, it's only your second year.
eilene - me too. I'm second year as well
cavey - Hi terry, they're busy right now
brad - I really like Routman. I keep meaning to see if I coulld see her in action one day.
Sharon - even says that she has been in the face of whole language purists lately with her latest book
Kim/1/Ca - Brad.............pay attention. Yopp Singer?
brad - I want to Yopp Singer, but I just got materials recently, and haven't had a chance. Why?
eilene - sorry, Kim. I'm notorious for distracting people during serious conversation, and apparently Brad has fallen victim
terry - I see that Cavey, I am just "listening"
eilene - Hi, Terry
Sharon - but he has issues with her about her list of problem solving strategies
cavey - you came to the serious part of the chat
Kim/1/Ca - It will help you determine "where they are." If they are discerning the sounds............
brad - Yes, I know. Problem is I have to find time now to Yopp Singer
brad - I should've been doing at beginning of year
Sharon - i liked the yopp singer... although my professor told me to look into the new dibels... that it did a better job with phonemic awareness assessment
Kim/1/Ca - Want me to come do it for you?
brad - Really, Sharon?? What part? I don't remember that component
brad - sure Kim, I'd love to see you in action too
Kim/1/Ca - DIBELS?
Sharon - of dibels?
brad - better yet, I want Routman to come do it. Get her butt out of ritzy Shaker Heights
brad - There's oral reading fluency, nonsense reading, word fluency
Kim/1/Ca - good one brad.............eMail her and ask. Tell h er you are very busy.
brad - sharon, maybe that section is not present in second grade materials
Sharon - i wrote and asked for information about dibels for you... my prof was off to hear pressley speak... said she would get the info when she returned, brad
brad - i have materials: i jsut wanted to know about it in practice
Sharon - that's the info she said she would get
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon...............are you doing any running records yet................to see where your kids are "at"?
Sharon - yes, kim
cavey - Well, I'm off. I've also got to go. It will take me a while to digest all that I have heard tonight. I am in a complete state of dissonance!
brad - kiss the guinea pigs for me, cavey
Kim/1/Ca - Well, I started yesteday. I pulled out my Reading Recovery assessment books. you familair?
brad - (that'lll do pig, that'll do) (sniff)
Kim/1/Ca - ((((((((((cavey)))))))))i thought you were gone! sorry!
Sharon - i have two reading right on level, two that are reading end of first grade level books, and the rest range from 2nd - 4th grade level
cavey - goodnight guys!
brad - wow sharon. in this building do you have high SES?
Sharon - not very, kim... i asked to be trained a few years back... admin laughed... do you think we have money just laying around?
brad - Are you RR, Kim?
Kim/1/Ca - WOW.................sheez. I have tested 7 of them. So far they are all right on level. Level 14 .
Sharon - brad... some high, some middle... ALL involved, supportive parents
brad - that helps a lot, don't you find?
Kim/1/Ca - No brad...............i just have the leveled books for assessment cuz that is how I was taught to do them.
Sharon - when i say read 20 mins a night homework... they do it! and record it on our RAH form for me
brad - how often do you benchmark like this kim?
Sharon - yes, brad... but the other first grade units aren't seeing them jump like this... of course, these teachers "coast" with them... it's sad really
brad - now since you asked me, what do they do sharon, that they just coast?
Sharon - movies in the afternoon, lots of outside play time, worksheets at desks while teachers socialize in the hall
brad - oh my. what is reading instruction like in your schools eilene and terry?
Kim/1/Ca - well.............i had to do a LOT of assessments early in the year. no rr though............hard to do rr with early firsties, lower than pre primer. So, this is the first actual running record for most of them. I will probably do it again in the late spring.
terry - A whole new ballgame for us this year
Sharon - and cute fluffy stuff to take home and "impress" parents
brad - Kim, Dibels is free on the net. You should look into it. I think it's going to be great if I put it in place.
terry - We restructured our Title I teaching team
Sharon - why aren't our kids making those adorable sweatshirts?
Kim/1/Ca - That is criminal , Sharon.
terry - We have a new Reading Series,
brad - "um, cause they're learning to read"
Sharon - brad... are there some that you purchase? or is that for a fee you can send them in and have them analyze the results?
terry - we are also giving every at risk student 30 minutes of extra reading instruction
brad - "Why aren't we making cookies, Mr. Johnson?" "Um, cause you're learning to read."
Sharon - i always tell my parents that i'm very protective of my instructional time... what can they say to that? they haven't said much since i started responding with that
brad - I seem to remember the fee for them to score or something like that. But truly any educated person could do it themselves esp. if they've done a running record (or belong to ESIA)
Sharon - i'm just trying to figure out why the p.a. stuff wasn't there... maybe i'm mistaken about that
Kim/1/Ca - But Mr. Hutchinson is making Latkas, Mrs. L..............
terry - well all, i'll say goodnight
brad - hold on, it's right here in front of me. Let me open that PENDAFLEX folder
brad - Okay, Sharon, heres why.
brad - Second Grade only does the Oral Reading fluency, Retell Fluency, And Word use fluency
brad - (and nonsense word )
brad - There's also an Initial Sound Fluency for pre-K and K, a Letter Name Fluency for K and early 1
Sharon - kim... i did make the snowman ornaments... before school... had the kids come in a few at a time and do the handprint on the ball and make into a snowman... attached the poem and hung on our tree... my tree in the room is called the geome-tree... we focus on spheres, cylinders, cubes, and cones decorations
brad - A segmentation Fluency for K and 1
brad - And that's why I don't remember those parts Sharon, cause I don't have them with second grade materials
Sharon - i see, brad
brad - We did do a "Symme-Tree" for Christmas
Kim/1/Ca - We made the clothespin reindeer ornament. And we will do thecountdown chain next week and a candy cane bead pattern thing...........
Kim/1/Ca - We do a book a week.............today we did "Gingerbread Man: Escape Prevention Measures"
brad - Kim and Sharon, I want you to come inservice my first grade teachers
Sharon - my room is now full of trees! the christmas tree and 3 other "life-sized" trees the kids made while studying trees in science
brad - Force them to give up "seatwork"
Kim/1/Ca - We do the Family Tree.................a bunch of green handprints cut from butcher paper...............everyone in their family. Curl the fingers, staple to the walls. add their ornaments.............cute
Sharon - will you come inservice our second and third grade teachers?
brad - love to (for the right fee)
Sharon - maybe it's that "prophet in his own town" syndrome... i've had a few cutting remarks about going for a doctorate
brad - Sharon, clearly you are doing this for your own knowledge, because unless you plan on being a "higher-up" a doctorate is USELESS on the pay scale around here
Kim/1/Ca - jealousy, sharon
brad - I love that you're getting it in reading too. It's helped me. LOL
Kim/1/Ca - I want one!
Sharon - it is for my own knowledge... it's a personal goal... and i do have other aspirations... i will probably teach in an adjunct position at the university level in a teacher prep program
brad - That's my goal, Sharon. (stealer!)
Sharon - a doctorate will net me $2500 more than a specialists.... national board certification would net me $5000 and $5000 for my classroom
Sharon - somehow seems a little unbalanced to me
Kim/1/Ca - I am so tired I can't concentrate anymore.....................<<<<<<<<zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Sharon - but the national board certification is a goal of mine too... just can't do it while in school
brad - What a wonderful world if we all taught at same building. think of the smarties coming out of there
Kim/1/Ca - amen, brad
Sharon - AMEN... and think how much we would all grow as teachers!
Kim/1/Ca - amen sharon.....
Sharon - and we could have grace as our consultant and jan as our principal
brad - (starting to think about namng my kid Bruce Joyce. Maybe we should call it a night)
Sharon - eegads...just saw the time!
brad - itallblurstogether
Sharon - you're defo right... sleep time!
Kim/1/Ca - ((((smooches))) get some sleep, DAD.You too, almost Doc
brad - Sharon, real quick
brad - Are you going to have people call you Dr.?
Kim/1/Ca - You are the best. Thanks for a good Friday chat.
Sharon - enjoyed it guys
Sharon - yes brad?
Kim/1/Ca - Sharon, the Docta!
brad - i'll keep you posted as soon as we have name
Sharon - it's not important... my husband doesn't correct people
brad - it's not, but dammit I earned it (wife says I'm being egotistical)
Sharon - some still call him coach!
Sharon - you earn EVERY LAST BIT OF IT
Sharon - and...
Sharon - you know what my fear is guys?
brad - I probably wouldn't correct though. Correspondence would have it on there though
Sharon - that i'll be one of those ABD people
Kim/1/Ca - You betcha
brad - ABD?
Sharon - all but dissertation
brad - oh, yeah
brad - That's down the road. Until then aufwiedershen or something like that
Sharon - sleep sweet guys
Kim/1/Ca - Go to sleep!
