brad - I was reading about Sharon's day, and while we all still have them, it struck a chord in me that before, in my life, about six or seven years ago, there was a time when Sharon's day was my Everyday. My life was in constant turmoil. And I went through some issues and some counseling, and came out the other side a better person. Anyway, as I read Sharon's story, I was so thankful I could drop to my knees that those days like that are few and far between now and more fate-oriented than self-induced.

Kim/1/Ca - reading is also language based...............without adequate language, decoding letters don't sound like much...........
Sharon - me either in undergrad...but I'm loving grad classes
brad - I learned the politics of whole language vs. phonics., the different approaches. Lots of blah blah blah about development, but nothing of value

Sharon - i read as much outside of class assignments as i do for them, too... i just find it all fascinating
brad - IF I remained like many do stuck teahcing what I learned in college I'd be floundering, probably look say and boring worksheets cause that's what I grew up on

eilene - I resent how my undergrad program sent me out with grand ideas of changing the world, without the tools to do so. It wasn't until I talked to a veteran teacher who told me the old but true (?) adage "it takes five years to make a teacher."

Kim/1/Ca - WOW.................sheez. I have tested 7 of them. So far they are all right on level. Level 14 .

Kim/1/Ca - No brad...............i just have the leveled books for assessment cuz that is how I was taught to do them.
Sharon - when i say read 20 mins a night homework... they do it! and record it on our RAH form for me
brad - how often do you benchmark like this kim?
Sharon - yes, brad... but the other first grade units aren't seeing them jump like this... of course, these teachers "coast" with them... it's sad really
brad - now since you asked me, what do they do sharon, that they just coast?
Sharon - movies in the afternoon, lots of outside play time, worksheets at desks while teachers socialize in the hall
brad - oh my. what is reading instruction like in your schools eilene and terry?
Kim/1/Ca - well.............i had to do a LOT of assessments early in the year. no rr though............hard to do rr with early firsties, lower than pre primer. So, this is the first actual running record for most of them. I will probably do it again in the late spring.

Sharon - i always tell my parents that i'm very protective of my instructional time... what can they say to that? they haven't said much since i started responding with that
brad - I seem to remember the fee for them to score or something like that. But truly any educated person could do it themselves esp. if they've done a running record (or belong to ESIA)

brad - There's also an Initial Sound Fluency for pre-K and K, a Letter Name Fluency for K and early 1
Sharon - kim... i did make the snowman ornaments... before school... had the kids come in a few at a time and do the handprint on the ball and make into a snowman... attached the poem and hung on our tree... my tree in the room is called the geome-tree... we focus on spheres, cylinders, cubes, and cones decorations
brad - A segmentation Fluency for K and 1
brad - And that's why I don't remember those parts Sharon, cause I don't have them with second grade materials

Sharon - my room is now full of trees! the christmas tree and 3 other "life-sized" trees the kids made while studying trees in science
brad - Force them to give up "seatwork"
Kim/1/Ca - We do the Family Tree.................a bunch of green handprints cut from butcher paper...............everyone in their family. Curl the fingers, staple to the walls. add their ornaments.............cute

Sharon - maybe it's that "prophet in his own town" syndrome... i've had a few cutting remarks about going for a doctorate
brad - Sharon, clearly you are doing this for your own knowledge, because unless you plan on being a "higher-up" a doctorate is USELESS on the pay scale around here

Sharon - it is for my own knowledge... it's a personal goal... and i do have other aspirations... i will probably teach in an adjunct position at the university level in a teacher prep program

Sharon - a doctorate will net me $2500 more than a specialists.... national board certification would net me $5000 and $5000 for my classroom
