mary anne - hi how long have you been a RR teacher
tyylee - this is my fourth year but I have been a reading teacher for twenty years
mary anne - this is my 6th where are your from?
tyylee - midwest, and you?
mary anne - pennsylvania
mary anne - my computer is really slow tonight
tyylee - my connection is very bad tonight, very slow. Is this mary/pa?
mary anne - yea
mary anne - this is my first time on the rr chat
tyylee - the lady who usually moderates the rr chat is mary/pa. I thought you might be one in the same.
mary anne - so you take students with a learning support label at your school?
mary anne - no not that mary
mary anne - think i should take a typing class!
tyylee - I am not sure what you mean about a learning suppot label. I do rr half time and literacy groups for all children the other half of my day. I am paid with Title 1 funds.
Didi (Oz) - hi everyone
tyylee - didi, are you still in school there?
mary anne - the students you take for reading recovery, are any of them learning support?
Didi (Oz) - Yes but Ihave a couple of weeks off caring for my mum.
Didi (Oz) - Hi Mary anne
mary anne - hi
Didi (Oz) - We break for week at Easter.
tyylee - If you mean what we call learning disabled then no unless there aren't any other children left to take since they are getting special education assistance. We do have one LD child right now who was doing so well we thought she deserved a chance.
Didi (Oz) - We at last got this web site into our local RR group and so I hope we will get the sunday meeting going. But guess who forgot last Sunday.
tyylee - didi, when is school out there? I have a student teacher right now who is going to Australia for a student teaching experience when she leaves me in about six weeks.
Didi (Oz) - Hi Ruthie dont worry just respond as you want to.
mary anne - Our LS students are in a reg classroom. When we test in the fall these students are usually lowest. many of our first round students have some type of label
mary anne - or have a label by the end of fisrt grade
Didi (Oz) - We don't take on childen assessed for special education but probably 1 or 2 a year Ihave to refer because they need more than RR
tyylee - what about a sunday meeting? I haven't been to a meeting in a while, are they trying to start a Sunday meeting?
Didi (Oz) - We are trying to get a Sunday meeting up and running for Australia and NZ RR teachers but its about 11pm your time Sat I think.
mary anne - we take them if it is learning disability but not an IQ below 80. It can be frustrating because they take FOREVER to discontinue!
Didi (Oz) - Most Aus and NZ teachers can't et to this meeting because it is midday our time anf in the middle of classtoime
ruthie - Is this a chat for just rr or do you teach any part of the 4 block model?
mary anne - i do rr all day
tyylee - was there a topic set up for tonight? I teach rr and literacy groups
Didi (Oz) - all day Mary anne!! How many kids? Ruthie what id 4 block model?
mary anne - i do 6 students
mary anne - thne help teachers with other students
Didi (Oz) - Just got bumped off
Didi (Oz) - When do you start summertime?
mary anne - mid june
ruthie - the four block model is a balanced literacy reading instruction method. My district is planning to use this method district wide next year. Our rr teachers will not use the method as they have their own criteria to follow.
Didi (Oz) - I haven't heard of it here Ruthie
mary anne - our teachers do guided reading
Alison - Any suggestions for a child having great difficulty taking words to fluency?
Didi (Oz) - Our teachers do guided reading.
tyylee - I need to run, sorry I can't stay longer tonight. I'll try to get back in a couple of weeks. Our summer break starts the first of June. My school will be going 4-Block next year also but since I dont' have a classroom it won't effect me. We will still do Literacy Groups also
Didi (Oz) - Do you do the same word for more than one day
mary anne - i do a lot of ML work, writing on board, in air on carpet, finding in text. do a few days if necessary and only 1 word til solid
mary anne - once they learn how words work it goes quicker
ruthie - 4 block is big in Illinois. It guided reading, self-selected reading, working with words, and writing. The working with word part has many game type activities to help the students learns basic sight words.
mary anne - if they come to word in text and don't know it , i have them write that word or make it with the mag letters again
Alison - Yes, Didi. Sometimes for several lessons up to a week. Then he appears to have it, but in a few days it's gone. He does better with words that are not sight words.
mary anne - i also do a fluent writing review for these kids when they forst come in
Didi (Oz) - Do you talk about how they are going to remeber it and what are the trickey / special bits to remember
Didi (Oz) - what do you mean by that maryanne
mary anne - i have them picture it in their heads before writing it
mary anne - necessary give them clues like 3 letters 2 tall athen 1 short
Didi (Oz) - I know what you mean Alison are you able to structure his sentences so he has to use it frequently
mary anne - i spend about 1-2 min before lesson having them wrie words we have been working on and some words i want to be sure they have retained
Didi (Oz) - ? the fluent writing review
Didi (Oz) - I do the same maryanne
mary anne - yeah
ruthie - Thanks for listening, I have to run.
Alison - Good reminders and ideas. Yes, I can structure his sentences, he's easy that way.We do the fluent writing review. I'll try doing more talking about how to remember and where the tricky parts are. He does do better when I remind him to look in his "brain" for the word.
Gigi/MO - Sorry I'm late!! I just got home from a community Easter service!!
Didi (Oz) - What week are you at with your kids
Gigi/MO - What are we talking about?
Didi (Oz) - I don't know if there is a topic today
mary anne - i'm on week 7 to 2nd week of RAK with my second round students
Gigi/MO - I'm on week 13 with two of mine and week 4-5 with another on!!
Gigi/MO - OOPS!! I meant one at the end!! Sorry!! I'm trying to type fast!!
mary anne - will you be able to get a third round in?
Didi (Oz) - Mine are w5 1st round but having this time off is not helping
Didi (Oz) - One has got to L4 they all started at L0
Gigi/MO - Probably not, on the third round!!
mary anne - my first round usually start there too
mary anne - ad second round for L2-L5
Didi (Oz) - How soon do you start M&B in addition to alphabet work for children with low letter knowledge
Gigi/MO - My fourth second round student moved in and was only here about 1-2 weeks!! I got 4 days of RAK in and then she moved again!! She was on a LEVEL B in Feb. of her first grade year!! SAD, huh?
mary anne - when we start the year it seems as though we have lots of time off, a week for the fair usually after 3 days of lessons, then rr conference, thanksgiving and christmas
mary anne - ids with low letter id i usually don't get to M&B until L 6-7
Gigi/MO - Didi--Are you in Australia?!? or Kansas (OZ)? HAHA I hear that the teachers in the US start M&B way to soon!!
mary anne - for some reason my first letters are not always showing up, sorry
Didi (Oz) - Thanks Maryanne I guess my boy has about 30 or so letters now so he is improving but I have only been doing letter work with him
Didi (Oz) - hi gigi in Australia
Gigi/MO - What state are you from, mary anne? Where is Mary/PA tonight??
mary anne - i started doing more with letters -even for the kids that "know" them this year
mary anne - it has helped
mary anne - I am from PA but not mary from pa!!!
Didi (Oz) - an activity he enjoys is circling letters that I have written on a page using a different colour to circlre for each letter.
mary anne - this is my first time on a rr chat--i keep forgetting
Alison - I must go. Thanks for your help and suggestions. Good night and good day.
mary anne - night
Gigi/MO - I know more letter work SHOULD be done but I'm one of the ones that start M&B too early probably!!
mary anne - i do a lot of sorts finding tall letters, ones that only have straight lines, getting down to sorting like letters like m,n, h , r
Didi (Oz) - In your first weeks do you always write the unknown word in writing time. I often spell them out for the child to wrtie
Gigi/MO - Glad you are here, mary anne!! It's hard to remember!!
mary anne - me too i think it helps with letter id
mary anne - 't know it we bring one of them to fluency
Didi (Oz) - Thanks for that sorting reminder maryanne I should do that as mine are not very attentive to text
mary anne - this is the first year that i have really done a lot of it and i see a big improvement
mary anne - we spent a continuling contact class discussing this and it really hit home for me
Didi (Oz) - What level letter knowledge did yours come in with maryanne
mary anne - i have had them come in pretty low, this year i found that they could tell me the names of the letters in letter ID test but couldn't call them up to write them
mary anne - we spant a lot of time talking about how to write the letter
Didi (Oz) - I find there is a difference between reading and writing letters o I work on writing 'known' letters in RAK
mary anne - yeah but letters i thought werte known weren't just a lucky guess!!!
Gigi/MO - Many children with low letter id need a plan of action for writing even ones they can identify!!
mary anne - so true
Didi (Oz) - Letter formation in writing was is very poor in my kids this year
mary anne - mine too
mary anne - mine too, they have poor starting points and all the same size
Gigi/MO - I got up and danced on the table when 2 of my first round students learned ALL their letters!! I took pictures and had them get up there with me too!!
mary anne - in roaming we spend a lot of time making their name look right
Didi (Oz) - So lots more work on letters first up next term
Didi (Oz) - What kind of lines do your kids have in their class books
mary anne - in kdg no lines finally !!! it took a while to get them to go there
mary anne - irst they start with big spaces with top, bottom and dotted line in midddle
Gigi/MO - In the classroom, they have a red line to write on and a green one up at the top and a divided one in the middle!!
Didi (Oz) - Ours have 4 lines 2 blue ones for writing between with a red one above and below for tall and letters with tails to reach to
mary anne - sounds like a great idea
mary anne - s have trouble with spacing lines because of tail letters
Didi (Oz) - The problem with ours is they have these coloured lines for the first 3 years at school
Gigi/MO - Didi--that sounds confusing!?! Is it to the children? Maybe mine sounds confusing TOO!!
Didi (Oz) - then they don't know how to write on a single line and get proportions right
mary anne - well i need to go it has been great chatting with you
mary anne - I'll try to remember to get on for the next chat!!!
Gigi/MO - I've got a question that I need some advice on!?! Do you have time to help me?
Didi (Oz) - Its not too bad gigi. See you maryanne and gigi it has been good
Didi (Oz) - Sorry gigi yes what is it
Gigi/MO - I talked to my TL about it!! I only had a RR student for 4 Roaming lessons and then she moved!! There is only about 6-7 weeks of our school year left!! Should I try to pick up another student in that short of time?? The one I would take is on a level 14-16!?!
Didi (Oz) - Are you allowed to take on the l!4 because that would be good. They try to get us to take on one from the lower grade here so that they carry over to the next year
Didi (Oz) - The problem with that is it seems to waste time as they go back over the long break. We all doing it
Gigi/MO - My TL said that if I take her she would have to be on a 18-20 to be discontinued!! I really think it might not be TOO hard to do but I really don't know what to do!! My TL also said that I need to see if the 4 day roamer girl will go into the computer so she would count for 1 of my 8 students!! We are supposed to work with at least 8 students per year!!
didi/australia - Had a white out
Gigi/MO - Did you get booted off?
didi/australia - yes i did
Gigi/MO - Thanks for coming back to give me some advice!!
didi/australia - That sounds possible getting her to L18 and it would be beneficial to her too
Gigi/MO - I feel guilty not taking on another one but..... The level 14 is our next lowest one which is a good problem to have!!
Gigi/MO - Sorry didi!! You are having a hard time!!
Didi (Oz) - That's better than having to start a kindy kid
Gigi/MO - I agree!! I've NEVER in 6 years taken a KK at the end of the year!! I go into their classrooms but I've never worked one-on-one with them!!
Didi (Oz) - It can be a challenge taking a higher one on because they have lotes of good things but the challenge is finding whats holding them up Go with it gigi
Gigi/MO - You can go now, Didi, if you need to!! Thanks for coming back on so many times just for ME!!
Gigi/MO - Thanks for you advice too!!
Didi (Oz) - where is MO and yes I'd better get my poor mum some lunch its 1pm
Gigi/MO - Missouri is practically in the very middle of the US!! We have the big cities of St. Louis and Kansas City!!
Didi (Oz) - thanks
Gigi/MO - Are you in school right now!!
Didi (Oz) - I should be but I have 2 weeks off caring for mum shes just had a hip eplacement
Gigi/MO - You better go eat lunch and I need to go do some things before BED!! We didn't have school today because of bad weather!!
Gigi/MO - How fun to talk all the way around the world!! I'd LOVE to come to "the land down under sometime"!!
