wishy-washy - hi tyylee...where are you from?
tyylee - midwest, you?
wishy-washy - southeast
wishy-washy - How long have you been in RR...10 years here!
tyylee - Ready to start my fourth year in RR but have been a Title 1 reading teacher for 20/
Krissieme - This will be my second year
wishy-washy - Is your school/district fully implemented?
wishy-washy - Congratulations on completing your trainin, Krissieme.
tyylee - my school is but others in the disrict aren't.
Krissieme - wishie-where in the southeast?
wishy-washy - South Carolina
Krissieme - My district is fully implemented
Melissa - Hello
wishy-washy - How large is your school, Tyylee?
Krissieme - Is your distrct fully implemented?
wishy-washy - Where is your district Krissieme?
Krissieme - HEY-MEllissa
tyylee - Only about 50 or so first graders with two RR teachers.
Melissa - hi kriss
Krissieme - I am in West Central FLA
Krissieme - WOW that is alot of students for only two RR teachers!
Melissa - yes 25 each!
wishy-washy - My district has 19 schools with 1st grade and every one of those schools has RR but, unfortunately, the level of coverage varies from less than 25% service to those students in need to 100% at other schools. About 4/19 are really fully covered,
Melissa - i am new to teaching and to chat
wishy-washy - Did any of you do web-based data submission (the dreaded scan forms) this year? If so, how did it go?
Melissa - i will be teaching guided reading this year
tyylee - Between us we can usually see 18 or 19 with all the moving in and out. We are able to see most who really need our services. We also have Title One which does Literacy groups with all k, 1, and 3 children so everyone gets some services.
wishy-washy - Tyylee...do you and your cohort teach RR all day?
Melissa - what kind of support will RR recovery teachers provide?
Melissa - do they only provide serive to the lowest achieving 1st graders?
rpb - Hello room -What's the topic!
tyylee - We did Web submission and I loved it! I do RR half day and Title half day but my schedule is mixed up over the course of the day. I do three Lit. groups, two RR, lunch, the other two RR and another Lit group in the afternoon.
Melissa - hi rp
tyylee - Usually Mary/PA moderates our discussion and has a specific topic. She hasn't checked in yet tonight. Anyone know what we planned to discuss?
Krissieme - Do ya'll have class rooms to teach or do ya'll just teach RR?
Melissa - kriss i have a first grade classroom
rpb - What is your experience with teaching aids to do reading recovery?
Krissieme - NONE. They have to be certified and trained to teach RR
tyylee - RR is a year long training process and meant for experienced teachers. I didn't think they could train Instructional assistants.
Melissa - does anyone have any sites on running records?
Krissieme - RR teachers provide a multitude of services. It is a great program and if you haven't been trained in it you should find out where you can.
Melissa - i am teaching guided reading for the first time and wondering if i will be expected to do running records
Krissieme - I haven't see any yet
rpb - Anyone from a school that has volunteer doing reading recovery
Krissieme - Mel-Yes you will. I will help you out tremendously and they are not hard to do ar analyze.
Krissieme - I meant to say"It"
Melissa - wow kriss..about how long will it take me to learn
Melissa - i was hoping to become familair with it over the summer
tyylee - Unless a person has been officially trained you can't really call it RR. We have trained some "advocates" but they are not official RR teachers even though they do work with children using RR methods.
Krissieme - Yes you can.
Krissieme - The Guided Reading book should tell you how to do it.
MonAmi - Are there any methods you can share that we can use in the classroom while we do Guided Reading? Share some of those methods
tyylee - Melissa, get Mari Clay's book, The Observation Survey, It will give you guidance in taking and analysing running records as well as the rest of the test we give at the beginning of a child's program. We use the same test to establish and evaluate children for guided reading groups
rpb - Our school has never been trained but tries hard to use reading recovery principles with our lowest students. Any suggestions as to how to make this better?
Krissieme - There are several other books that can help you. You should also ask your reading teacher at school
tyylee - All the Fountas and Pinnel books are good for learning to use Guided Reading. We attempted to
Krissieme - RPB- Apply for a grant to get these principle in practice.
Missy - ok sorry had techinical difficulties
Missy - This is Melissa
Missy - i have both of those books
Missy - thanks
Di - I want to use 2 chapter books of about the same length for an easy selection for guided reading. Does anyone have any management tips. It's the 1st time I'd like to try it.
Missy - guess ill have to do my reading
Krissieme - There is a book called"Guided Reading" Itis a big white bookwith red writing on front.
Missy - yes got that by pinnel and fountas
Kiddo - My district has a retired RR teacher who volunteers at her school
tyylee - We attempted to do RR methods before we were officially trained but there is a world of difference! However, volunteers, aids, teachers, etc. can be trained to do guided reading. One of the good things about GR is that the groups rotate amoung all the teachers so the children get the best of each person.
Missy - wish i had some children to practice on
Krissieme - Where is everyone from? I am from FLA
Kiddo - I'm from Texas
Missy - from michigan
Krissieme - Missy - Do you have neighborhood kids, young cousins, or friends children?
MonAmi - I'm from Texas
Missy - hm my niece is going into 1st grade!
Missy - kriss yea great idea
Krissieme - Hey ((((((((Monami)))))))
Missy - but shes pretty much a non reader
Missy - hm
MonAmi - Hello, how are you doing?
Kiddo - Do most of you have lit groups? How many?
tyylee - If summer school is going on in your area you might see if they are doing guided reading ( ours is) and go observe for a couple of days. I am sure they would gladly give you a few kids to teach, too. LOL
Krissieme - That is prettier much perfect for RR!
Krissieme - OOOOO I need some sleep!
Missy - LOL@tylee
Krissieme - "pretty"
Missy - i did my student teaching in new zealand
Missy - i have a good foundation
Kiddo - Do any of you share a home room with another RR teacher and teach RR half day?
Missy - wow your all so quiet
tyylee - Missy, we start with the lowest first graders and most of them don't know much more than their names, and if we are lucky a letter or two. Most of mine don't know any sounds. I have had a few that start without being able to write their names correctly. So your niece sounds perfect for practice.
Krissieme - WOW-Missy! How did that happen?
Krissieme - I will sharfe my classroom with another RR teacher this year.
Missy - practice a running record on tho?
didi(aus) - Hi what is todays topic. Sorry I haven't been on this year had to wait for you to start daylight saving so it comes into our lunch time.
Di - I've looked at the Guided reading book and have thought of before, during, after reading. I have broken it down so they read about the same number of pages/chap. Does it work out ok. or do some finish early and are not sure what to do?
Missy - kriss ir was an exchange program
MonAmi - When you are doing the GR what kind of activities are the other students doing?
tyylee - Welcome, Didi. Are you in school in Aus?
Missy - it*
Kiddo - I shared my class with a first grade teacher two years ago. Last year I taught half Extended Day Kinder and half RR
Missy - im lost at how to actually begin my balanced reading program
Krissieme - I
didi(aus) - i ylee yes I am in Australia we have just started 2nd semester I recognise you from last year
Krissieme - I want into that!
Krissieme - Missy is this your first year teaching?
tyylee - Didi, Mary hasn't shown up tonight and we don't have an official topic as far as I know. Anything that you would like to discuss. Last time we were talking about Mari Clay's most recent book.
Missy - last year i taught first grade...success for all
Missy - lessons were pretty much scripited
Missy - i got a job teaching in a differnt district
MonAmi - Are all the students doing GR at the same time?
Missy - and teaching guided reading
Kiddo - How many students did any of you discontinue last year?
Krissieme - What is the title of her recent book?
Missy - going into my 2nd year
Krissieme - We are supposed to be talking about RR
didi(aus) - I have a hard to accelerate child seems to find using more than one stategey hard. I need to focus on meaning more I think. He's week 19 level 10--just any ideas?
Di - Yes, my children do guided reading together at the same time.
Kiddo - Use a lot of who, what, when, why prompts for meaning
Krissieme - HAve you look in Marie Clay's book? It is the thin brown book for ideas?
MonAmi - Are the students separated by reading levels, or are all of them the same reading level?
Kiddo - Glad to have you cindylou
tyylee - In our system Guided Reading is taught by a group of teachers, Title 1 , Classroom teachers, Instructional Assistants, Special Ed., sometimes volunteers. We take all the children and test them using the observation survey of DRA and then divide them into small groups. We take a thirty minute block of time and every child is in a small group that rotates to a different 'facilitator' every two or three weeks. This is in addition to thier regular classroom reading groups.ght by a group of teachers;
Krissieme - They are separated by levels
didi(aus) - Blow there's the luch bel have to go thanks kiddo I'll check back on archives. bye
MonAmi - That is a good idea you all have at your school, where every one is envolved in the GR
tyylee - Didi, at that point in the lessons since you are almost through his RR program it might be time to do things a little different. How about getting his classroom reader and showing him that he can use his skills in other places. Also, sometimes backing up a couple of levels for a few days and giving little or no introduction or have him tell you what he thinks the story wil be about using the pictures before he reads the story.
MonAmi - How do you managed it if you have to do it in a self contained classroom?
Di - My groups are heterogenous. But last year because of the levels being so far apart we grouped them so they we close in indep. levels.
Kiddo - The two RR teachers had a homeroom and a separate RR room. We did 'tag team' teaching. While one taught RR, the other had the RR room. Then we switched.
tyylee - MonAmi, some of the children could be doing familiar reading, buddy reading, seatwork, centers, writing projects, etc.
MonAmi - You think it would be a good idea to have the others envolve in self teaching activities like the ones you mention
tyylee - Familiar reading in an independent process. Children all need a time to do some work independently if they are ever to become independent readers and writers. I don't think independent work is a bad idea if it is not overdone. I am not a fan of 'endless dittos', but there is so much more they can be doing without direct teacher interaction.
tyylee - I teach in a room where their are four or five groups going at the same time and they children quickly learn to tune out the other noise and focus on what their group is doing.
tyylee - I mean 'there'
tyylee - There in the first place and their in the second. I seem to have trouble typing tonight. My mind works better than my fingers.
MonAmi - I agree with finding other activities that can create independency in the students, instead of using lots of ditto sheets
tyylee - I need to go. See everyone next time.
MonAmi - thank you for the help. have to run
