snowflake - hi linda, are you a 2nd grade teacher?
linda - Hi--No, but I taught 2nd for a lot of years. I teach K now!
snowflake - neat!
snowflake - I taught 1st and 5th. . . I like 2nd!
linda - I was looking for a cute valentine container idea. I loved 2nd, too! But, wanted to try K with my partner.
linda - I have taught k,1,2,3 and 6th.
snowflake - wow
snowflake - I'm doing a search on atoz teacher stuff or reading activites for our "Literacy night" You might try there
linda - I had a really cute idea for a valentine container using an old bleach bottle and now I can't find it!! It was a homework project. where is that?
linda - I think that I have seen things on the literacy nights for parents. Where?? TNET archieves?
snowflake - I'll check there
snowflake - thanks
linda - I just read about a cute book to read to parents/kids called "Read to Your Bunny" have you heard of that?
linda - I am going to order it for our parents orientation day in the fall.
snowflake - no I haven't
snowflake - sound appropriate
linda - it is to stress the importance of reading to your child. It sounded really cute! The author is Kellog. It is available through Booksamillion. I just saw it this morning.
snowflake - STeven Kellog
snowflake - ?
linda - I think it was about $5 and I was waiting to get a few other books before ordering it since I don't need it immediately. RIGHT--Steven Kellog!
snowflake - I will try to add that to my kellog collection
linda - Wait---no, it wasn't steven kellog. That is the other book I wanted to order called The Missing Mitten Mystery.
linda - i can't remember---rosemary something?
snowflake - oh neat, another "mitten" book
linda - you can search the booksamillion site under title
snowflake - I'm building a collection of "mitten" ideas this year
linda - I usually use ecampus.com for books since they are cheaper on shipping. THis mitten book is brand new and it has the mitten as the snowman's heart! It looked really cute, but I don't know the story.
snowflake - I'll check out those sites, thanks
linda - what state are you in? I am in southern california
snowflake - and you have electricity??? opps-sorry I'm from frozen NY state
linda - YES, so far we do? Northern CA is the one without at the moment?
linda - I am cold here and can't imagine how I would make it in the REAL COLD!
snowflake - the high today was 20.
snowflake - my hubby is out snowmobiling this afternoon
linda - BRR!!! I think it is in the low 60s here and I'm cold!
snowflake - I'll take 60's
linda - RIGHT--we are really spoiled here and moan a lot!
snowflake - how do i get to the archives on Tnet?
snowflake - not to change the subject
linda - I am not sure! I think that it is on the TNET homepage? I think I will go and look? I will check back here and see what I find?
snowflake - thanks
snowflake - barb, maybe you can help me. . . I'm searching for activities to do with parents (and kids) at a literacy night. Any ideas?
linda - Thanks! Well, i was going to search for an idea for a valentine container. And I was looking for a cute valentine art project to hang in my classroom?
Barb/2/NE - Snowflake, how are your students doing with double digit addition with regrouping, we start tomorrow
Barb/2/NE - linda, have you heard about using cereal boxes? and covering them with paper?
Barb/2/NE - snowflake, have you ever done a glyph?
snowflake - oh my. . . that's always "fun" . . . we are still on place value. I'll be there soon
snowflake - yes, good idea barb, thanks
linda - sounds cute. I was going to use plastic bleach type bottle and have them decorate as animals. But, I can't find the directions for the parents!
linda - I am going to search the TNET homepage...be back soon
Barb/2/NE - snowflake, have you seen the many glyphs here?
snowflake - barb - we use "Math Their Way" along with Adison Wesley
snowflake - where should i look, barb?
Barb/2/NE - lets see....Teachers.Net glyph search
Barb/2/NE - penguin, mitten, valentine!
snowflake - thanks so much , appreciate the chat
Sue - this is the first year I am teaching second.. I did first for a long time.
snowflake - this is my 11th year, I taught 1st for one year
TessaTL - This is my 2nd year teaching 2nd
snowflake - I taught 5th for 12 years. I love 2nd
snowflake - what are you working on in math?
TessaTL - Money
TessaTL - how about you
Sue - I like second also. The kids are able t o do so much more on their own. I still have some who are finished so soon. What do you have these kids do?
TessaTL - depends why they are geeting through so quickly
Sue - I just finished money and was amazed how many of my kids did so well with it. That was not the case in first.
snowflake - uh, some get it (money) because they are allowed to handle it... others don't ever seem to "get it"
TessaTL - if they are rushing I have them check their work
Sue - I am talking about ones who get everything correct.
snowflake - I'm working on placevalue - leads into double digit addition and subtraction
TessaTL - I have challenge packets for them
snowflake - what's in the challene packets
Sue - What do you put in the challenge packets?
TessaTL - We just finished double digit. They "got" addition, but not subtraction.
TessaTL - I put in a little of everything. Some creative writing, som challenging math, some more advanced reading comprehension activities
snowflake - sounds good!
TessaTL - I give them a new packet about every 2 weeks. I put in about 7 to 10 different activities
Sue - Is there any trick to teaching them regrouping in addition or subtraction?
snowflake - I include the computer as an idea for the kids who have their work done
TessaTL - I also have newspaper cards. On index cards I've put all kind of different things to find in the newspaper. i.e. find 10 describing words, find 2 coupons for cereal and add them up.
snowflake - sue, we use "Math Their Way" and it starts off with a good foundation of placevalue which leads into addition and sub.
TessaTL - I stressed place value first too, but I think I introduced subtraction too early
snowflake - MTW has us using placevalue mats that introduce those concepts from the start.
snowflake - we "add" unifix cubes and regroup and "take away" unifix cubes and regroup right from the start
TessaTL - gotta run thanks for chatting
TessaTL - gotta run thanks for chatting
snowflake - bye
snowflake - thanks for ideas
Sue - Tessa your ideas are great.
kcp - Hope I am not intruding with an unrelated question but would that be ok?
snowflake - yup, 2nd here
kcp - nope I teach 3rd
snowflake - what's up?
kcp - I need to know the name of one of Francine's friends from the tv show and books by marc brown. It is a girl and I think her name starts with a P
snowflake - prunella??
kcp - THATS IT!!!!Thank you so much. It was on the tip of my tongue and i could not think of it thanks again
snowflake - hi amilotx
snowflake - you're welcome
kcp - Ok gotta get back to work again
Sue - Have you ever used the Waterford computer program? Our school is applying for a grant but no one has figured out the logistics of it.
snowflake - kcp, bye
snowflake - never heard of it
snowflake - is it for grading?
snowflake - and record keeping?
REI - Waterford is a reading program, I believe. We considered it. VERY EXPENSIVE.
amilotx - I´m from spain
snowflake - are you a teacher amilotx?
Sue - Yes, but it requires each child to be on the computer for 15 min. each day. When do we teach?
Sassy - all grade 2 teachers here?
amilotx - Yes,I am
REI - Sue...that was one of our concerns. We felt we could use that money in better ways.
snowflake - what do you teach amilotx?
Sassy - how far are you guys with cursive?we have 8 more capitals to learn
snowflake - haven't started yet. . . need to begin soon
Sue - I just started. Since this is the first time I have taught it, I am taking it slow so I teach the letters the correct way.
Sassy - thanks snowflake
REI - Sassy....my kiddos are currently working on cursive v.
snowflake - I have a student teacher, and I didn't want to get her into cursive. She has enough to worrry about
amilotx - Yes,in Navarra Spain.The Country Basque
Sassy - have any kids that STILL forget to use periods?
Sassy - lowercase, rei?
snowflake - we use D'Nealian, I like the progression
amilotx - Basque
Sassy - agree
REI - We use Zaner Bloser. It introduces both Caps and lowercase at the same time.
snowflake - oh yes sassy, many punctuation errors
snowflake - D'Nealian does lower case first, then caps
Sassy - how much writing are they doing a day other than in their reading journals or resource books? anyone use Houghton/Mifflin?
snowflake - What do you teach amilotx?
Sassy - it does, rei????????????? wow!
Sassy - i do my own thing with it but i do all the lower case first
REI - We will repeat the alphabet again...with a sentence being added for each letter.
Sassy - how much writing are they doing a day other than in their reading journals or resource books?
Sassy - mine take FOREVER
snowflake - okay, gotta go, thanks to all you nice people for chatting. This is my big day on the computer. . . my teens have it the majority of the time. This was fun!!!!
Sassy - does anyone use Houghton/Mifflin?
REI - My group is farther ahead than the others in my grade level. Most started introducing cursive at Christmas time. We started at after Thanksgiving.
Sassy - so did i, rei
snowflake - opps, gotta answer sassy
snowflake - i do
Sassy - at thanksgiving time
snowflake - do you like it?
snowflake - I love it
Sassy - what copyright? what's your first story?
canuckguy - has anyone used Handwriting Without Tears?
Sassy - i hated the 99 and went back into Silly things and Come One Come All
snowflake - 1996. . . oh I don't know, I like them all
snowflake - I like the activities in the TM.
Sassy - i think that is an old series of their . The nes one,99,was terrible. great pictures but NO skills
Sassy - here too, snowflake
snowflake - skills workbook is weak
Sassy - not your 96, my 93 or95-i can't remember
Sue - Does anyone use Harcourt Brace?.
Sassy - what's the name of your first reader, snowflake?
snowflake - okay, bye everyone , have a good week
Sue - They have so many skills each week that we sometimes seem to get bogged down.
Sassy - bye snowflake
Sassy - 've used Houghton Mifflin for the 23 years i have been there and probably before that, too
Sassy - are you doing anything cute for valentine's day projects?
Sassy - am i here alone?
REI - LOL..Haven't even thought that far ahead, Sassy.
Sassy - come on rei--give me an idea. we made these dippy little hats last year -they looked hysterical wearing them but they loved making them
Sassy - does anyone teach in a catholic school here?
REI - Actually, I did order some little crafty thing from Oriental Trader that my kiddo's are making. Hope it gets here in time.
REI - Need to get back to work. Bye all!!!
Sassy - we traced our hands last here onto funfoam and then attached them to pipe cleaners and put them in a styroform cup with plaster of paris and glued to fingers down for I Love You in sign for their mothers
jstihorton - MrsHteach4 can you help me?
MrsHteach4 - what can I help you with?
jstihorton - I am looking for sample tests dealing with Logical Reasoning, you know, where they give you a set of facts and you have to determine whether it's Necessarily True, False, or can't be determined
jstihorton - I'm trying to find these online if possible
MrsHteach4 - oh geez...I cannot put my finger on something like that...did you do a search on the teachers.net website?
jstihorton - Yes, nothing, I remember doing them when I was kid
jstihorton - I've tried every site from here to Bombay
MrsHteach4 - sorry, wish I could help you...but I haven't seen anything like that
jstihorton - You know what I'm talking about though
MrsHteach4 - come in the regular chat room 1 ..there are a few people in there...maybe someone there can help
jstihorton - where is the regular chatroom?
MrsHteach4 - go to change rooms and room 1...I did ask for you though and haven't had a response
