J@VA - Welcome to the meeting tonight about snacks and recipes. Glad you could make it!
J@VA - has anyone cooked anything interesting since school started? I think that I will make Clifford no bake cookies this week.
Addie k/mo - we made jello jigglers for our "monster party". then each student got one of each of four colors and then we graphed our favorites.
Sandy/K/Mo - http://soar.berkeley.edu/recipes/crafts/ this is a good site for craft recipes
Sandy/K/Mo - we made rice krispie squares..
J@VA - Did you know that Krafts Foods has an interesting site? http://www.Kraftfoods.com/index.cgi
Sandy/K/Mo - http://www.eecs.umich.edu/mathscience/funexperiments/agesubject/lessons/smores.html make solar smores
j@VA - Does anyone have a recipe that would go great with the teaching of colors, friends or shapes?
Sandy/K/Mo - I have some rainbow recipes
Addie k/mo - for shapes you could sort wheat thins, triangle triscuits, ritz crackers, and something that is a rectangle. then eat them :-)
j@VA - Does anyone have a kitchen in their school that is for classroom use. I bet that must be nice?
nat/k/ma - I really want to listen to your ideas. I have no way of cooking with my children. We have half a room. We have no sink, no bathroom, no facilities at all.
Addie k/mo - no, but i have a microwave and a fridge (my own personal property)
Addie k/mo - our cooks are great to let us bake things or store them in their fridges and freezers
Kteach2000 - Hmm...My crayola mag has this cool kids receipt for "Blue Skies" Its basically jello!
Addie k/mo - do you put marshmallows in the "blue sky jello", for clouds????
Kteach2000 - Yeah Addie..Actually, you set the jello in a paper bowl over nite..Garnish it with Marshmellows or Whip Cream for the sky. A half orange for the sun, with peelings as the rays.
Sandy/K/Mo - I have my own toaster oven, refrig., elec. skillet, hot plate
nat/k/ma - I only have one outlet and that is devoted to the computers. I used to cook all the time years ago at my other schools.
Sandy/K/Mo - I don't have sink either... and only 3 plug ins
Kteach2000 - Well lets see, my dorm fridge, microwave, and coffee maker will probally go into my class!! LOL
Addie k/mo - for rainbows we make rainbow jello...
Addie k/mo - use a clear plastic cup for each student.monday - pour a little bit of red jello, let chill, tuesday-orange jello, let chill, wednesday-yellow, thursday-green, friday blue.
Addie k/mo - then you eat it on friday afternoon...the kids always mix it up and then it turns brown!!!
Addie k/mo - the kids really like it! and it takes all week, so they have to be patient! i think that is good for them :-)
Becky - Wow Addie that sounds great!!
j@VA - Becky, we are just trying to deicde what type of facilities everyone has to cook with. What do you have?
Becky - I have a hot plate...and access to a microwave. Oh and a sink.
Jane/KS - I want to suggest you may be able to get a grant to set up a "Mini Kitchen"
Jane/KS - Several years ago I got a $500 grant from SW Bell Telephone Co
Apple - peanut butter playdough: smooth peanut butter, honey, istant nonfat dry milk
Addie k/mo - yes, incorporate cooking as science and math or cooking and literature to obtain grants!
Sandy/K/Mo - when we do shapes I have the kids use the dinner roll and make them into cinn. roll shapes
Jane/KS - Exactly, Addie
Peachy/K/NC - I have a VERY simple delicious peanut butter cookie....three ingredients!
nat/k/ma - Jane, could you email me the information that was in your grant. I would love to get one but it would have to include electrical work.
Jane/KS - We usually start the year with apple crisp for Johnny Appleseed's birthday
Kteach2000 - Its in Sept,98 Crayola Kids Magazine..This month they are doing Weather theme...Food creative arts for it, and making weather things...Love it!
Sandy/K/Mo - we make applesauce for Johnny
j@VA - Sandy, we can not make apple juice anymore because it is not pasterized. Peachy, what is the recipe for the easy PB cookie?
Addie k/mo - we have an "o lovely mud" party when we read mrs. wishy washy....just chocolate pudding and animal crackers! they just dip the animals and act out the story! messy! messy!
Peachy/K/NC - Love that, Addie!
Jane/KS - Blue jello with gummy fish is easy and fun with an oceans unit
nat/k/ma - Addie, lovely idea
Sandy/K/Mo - dirt cake when doing plants
Addie k/mo - jane, i made that once (for a picnic) and the gummy fish discolored and turned hard...what did i do wrong?
Sandy/K/Mo - gummy worms
nat/k/ma - What is dirt cake, Sandy?
Jane/KS - Can't imagine, Addie....
Sandy/K/Mo - crushed oreos, vanilla pudding, and gummy worms
Becky - Jane we've done the blue jellow with gummy fish. We use a NEW fish bowl and put grapes in the bottom for the look of an aquarium.
Addie k/mo - becky! how cute!
j@VA - Kat emailed me and said that she does a snack thing during her ocean unit. "Fish in Ponds" by spreading crream cheese that has been tinted blue onto round crackers then top it with 3 goldfish crackers. Cute, huh?
Kteach2000 - Yummy, crumble a layer of devil food cake, mixed in with gummy worms, then choclate pudding (3 layers) in a new plastic beach pail..Use the shovel as the spoon..This is cute...
Jane/KS - Lemon "pie" with graham crust is easy to go with the Amelia Bedelia book where she keeps her job because her boss loves her lemon pie
Lori - anyone know of microwave playdough recipe?
Peachy/K/NC - No, Lori. Sounds interesting
Sandy/K/Mo - http://members.aol.com/aactchrday/snacks/dino.html Dino snacks
Jane/KS - We're doing the Arthur books now , does anyone have any ideas for correlated cooking?
Addie k/mo - we make edible spiders....cut a circle from bread...spread peanut butter, attach 8 pretzel sticks, use a ritz cracker for the head, spead peanut butter, add eight mini choco chip eyes....
j@VA - Isn't Arthur an aardvark? Couldn't you do an ant recipe. Do they eat ants?
Becky - I recently got a recipe for a unit I was doing on friendship. It's really simple.
Becky - We call it a bag of friendship. Each child brings a snack in a zip lock bag. You let them put all the snacks in a big bowl. After combining them you redistribute the snack in the bags. Everyone has a little of each child's snack.
Addie k/mo - you could do ants on a log...celery stick w/pb and add raisins
Addie k/mo - thats cute, becky, but we cant "share food" kids cannot bring in anything that is not prepackaged
Sandy/K/Mo - http://www.nj.com/yuckykids/recipes.html has really yucky recipes.. right now has hairy fruit salad
j@VA - Does anyone have the book "Book Cooks" for the k-3 level. Have you tried any of the recipes?
Jane/KS - I've used several of them, J@VA
Sandy/K/Mo - butterfly.. make peanut butter sand cut in half diagonal.. put mid corner in middle then a piece of celery in the middle and a cracker for head.
Addie k/mo - well, it was okay here until a couple of years ago...hepatits
Sandy/K/Mo - I have book cooks and use it all the time
Becky - Gee, I never thought about that!
Jane/KS - I really like how it's organized....I usually make a transparency of the recipe so we can read it all the time we're cooking
Becky - We also made pigs in blankets and purple cows to wrap up our farm unit. The kids loved that!
Sandy/K/Mo - I laminate and put at stations..
Jane/KS - OH, Becky, you sound very lucky
j@VA - The site idea box has some great recipes. http://www.ideabox.com/ideas.nsf/recipe
Sandy/K/Mo - mail box has easy recipes too
Addie k/mo - our health dept doesnt allow it :-( i have wondered when they would eliminate cooking in the class, but we almost always make ind. servings from prepackaged foods, so no one touches anyone elses food.
Sandy/K/Mo - we make pancakes...
Addie k/mo - becky, i love that idea! how do you make purple cows?
Jane/KS - I usually have an Oriental student from a nearby college come make Fried Rice when we read My First American Friend
j@VA - Becky, I may sound ignorant but what is a purple cow?
Jane/KS - Becky, lucky you can eat what your kids bring....must be a great community!
Sandy/K/Mo - Last year flat stanley brought back red beans and rice from N.O.
Addie k/mo - ants on a log are classic!!! you could use choc chips if your kids wont eat raisins :-)
Becky - Oh, sorry I should have explained. Its vanilla ice cream and grape soda. (grape ice cream float)
Jane/KS - Does anyone know where to buy chopsticks in quantity to use at school?
Addie k/mo - could you ask a chinese restaurant to donate them?
Sandy/K/Mo - the local chinese rest. will give them
j@VA - The book Everyone Cooks Rice is great for multicultural cooking (the different kinds of rice). Now Norah Dooley has a new book called Everyone Cooks Bread! Great!
Jane/KS - Tried....they only wanted to give 2-3 pair...didn't even want to sell them to me....I'll keep asking...teachers can have no pride sometimes
Sandy/K/Mo - last year I had a Mom come in and we did home made bread
Addie k/mo - becky, we will have to do that after our farm unit. we usually make butter and have it on crackers...put whipping cream in baby food jars and shake, shake, shake!!!!! add a little salt and eat!!!
Becky - I was able to find chopsticks in one of our local grocery stores...once. I went back the next year and they were all gone!
Sandy/K/Mo - we do butter in Nov. to go on our bread.
Addie k/mo - we made piki bread (native american) but i cant remember exactly how to do it...it tastes pretty bad IMO, though
Addie k/mo - sandy, did the mom demonstrate it? or did the kids participate in the bread making?
Sandy/K/Mo - the kids made it.. she just told them what to do
Sandy/K/Mo - we had flour EVERYWHERE but itwas fun
Jane/KS - I'd love to have a real butter churn....but antiques don't fit my budget
Kteach2000 - Here is the crayola homepage: http://www.bhglive.com/crayolakids/subscribe.htm
Sandy/K/Mo - smiling... I have one.. took it to school but watched it like a hawk
Sandy/K/Mo - my Mom made butter with it when she was little
Jane/KS - Does everyone make the wreath candy at Christmas time....easy
Addie k/mo - in little house in the big woods they make molasses candy on snow. i have always wanted to do that with my class. read that excerpt and then make the candy. we usually arent at school when there is enough fresh snow!
Sandy/K/Mo - we make candles, butter, bread, shuck corn
Addie k/mo - no, jane, please explain the wreath candy
Jane/KS - Addie. we're going to see Little House Christmas at the Coterie, Crown City, in KC
Addie k/mo - sandy, do you read the book, sarah mortons day?
Addie k/mo - jane, what is that exactly???? not something feasable for a field trip, but i might want to go
Sandy/K/Mo - this site has lots of neat things.. Cooking with young children http://members.aol.com/sgrmagnlia/index.html
Addie k/mo - i have been to the laura ingalls home and museum in mansfield mo several times....neat place if you get the chance
Jane/KS - Wreath candy is sooo easy....like Rice Crispy treats...except use Corn Flakes and add green coloring.....while warm put some on waxed paper..shape lilke a wreath...add red hots to look like berries....kids like it
J@VA - TechKids has a wonderful site. http://www.techedlab.com/techkids/cooking.html
Sandy/K/Mo - Addie here is is http://www.ri.net/schools/Bristol_Warren/BWHP/BWFILES/schools/ColtAnd/Plymouth/plymouth.html
J@VA - The next big event that is coming up is Halloween. Does anyone make anything special. I friend of mine makes "Witches Brew". It goes along with a song.
J@VA - I need something interesting for Johnny Appleseed. I tired of doing the same old things for his birthday and Halloween for that matter? :)
Jane/KS - J@VA, we make Apple Crisp (in the microwave).....eat it warm with Vanilla ice cream on top....delicious
Addie k/mo - we roast pumpkin seeds and eat them w/our pumpkin unit
Becky/AL/1 - How do you make apple crisp?
J@VA - I tried making a pumpkin pie with the pumpkin we got from the patch it was awful. I do not know what I did wrong. I do make apple crisp and cake.
Addie k/mo - was it a pie pumpkin???? there are different kinds and some of them arent too good for pies
J@VA - I don't think there is anything to do with an apple that I have not done yet. I scared to try a pumpkin ;)
J@VA - Wow, Addie I did not know that. I will have to ask the guy at the patch when we go in a few weeks. Thanks for the INFO
Sandy/K/Mo - j... did you dry apples?
Addie k/mo - have you done the apple smiles? two apple slices w/pb and mini marshmallows between them
Jane/KS - Becky, the recipe I use is in a microwave cookbook I have....give each child an apple to wash...then use one of the "round-sectioner" things to cut it up....put in a large dish...cover with a mixture of butter, oatmeal, flour, spices
Becky/AL/1 - I have a food dehydrator and my son loves dried apples! I didn't think to try that in my classroom!
Sandy/K/Mo - maybe we should post apple recipes on the board
Becky/AL/1 - Then microwave Jane?
J@VA - Sandy, no I haven't tried those. What do I do. Do I need to put spices on the apples and sit them in the sun?
Addie k/mo - we dried apples when i was in 6th grade...strung them up all over the room...the flies!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!! but a food dehydrator would be a much better way to do it
Jane/KS - Becky, I forgotten time to microwave...I can post later......smells delicious
Becky/AL/1 - Gee Addie, I hope so. I sure don't want flies!
Becky/AL/1 - Sounds yummy Jane
Addie k/mo - you wouldnt have them with a food dehydrator...these hung from fishing line from the ceiling for a long time!!!!
Sandy/K/Mo - I just hung a couple.. didn't have trouble with the flies though.. cheese cloth
Addie k/mo - we didnt have air cond. or screens on the windows!
Sandy/K/Mo - I am going to try to grow apple seeds this year
Jane/KS - Sandy,,,can you share your plans for planting apple seeds?
Sandy/K/Mo - I have the directions at school but you have to put in refrig. first.. and you have to use a certain apple
Jane/KS - Probably requires more of a green thumb then I have
Addie k/mo - sandy, i bet a lot of people would be interested in that...you might post it to the ring
J@VA - Can you post that on the ring tomorrow. I think we would all be interested in that idea, Sandy. Thanks
Addie k/mo - we planted watermelon seeds and not very many sprouted! everyone planted two and only 6/22 kids have even one plant!
Becky/AL/1 - We planted peanuts when we were doing peanut butter and jelly in our reader. They are sooo easy to grow.
J@VA - Becky, that is neat how did you plant peanuts? How long did it take it to grow?
Jane/KS - Tell us more, Becky?
Becky/AL/1 - You just use raw peanuts. Crack the shell, plant the nut. We planted them last Wednesday and I went in today and they had sprouted! I was thrilled.
Darcy - Hmmm. Wonder if you can plant a jelly plant? :-)
Addie k/mo - neat, becky, sounds like a fun project
Sandy/K/Mo - Becky.. that's fast..
Sandy/K/Mo - may try that instead of my beans in a zip lock
Jane/KS - Hate to ask,,,but where do you buy raw peanuts in shell, Becky?
Addie k/mo - darcy...you could plant jellybeans and peanuts and let the kids predict what will happen
Becky/AL/1 - It was the first time I had ever tried it...I didn't really expect it to work.
J@VA - Thanks Becky I will try that when we study George Washington Carver.
Jane/KS - LOL @ Addie
Becky/AL/1 - Grocery store Jane. In the fruits and vegetables.
Addie k/mo - becky, i thought they were treated with chemicals or something
Jane/KS - THANKS. Becky...I'm going to try it!
Kteach2000 - Darcy, Ive had some sorts of jelly that had seeds in it...Dont think it would grow droopy jello, but would be interesting.
Becky/AL/1 - I don't know about the chemicals. We used it as an introduction to our science module also. We aren't going to eat them.
J@VA - I have a wierd question does everyone have a snack time at their school? We do not. I don't know why. I got there about 7 years ago and I can't figure out why. I think it's becuase some children can not afford t bring a snack everyday
Addie k/mo - i just figured that they wouldnt grow, not that you couldnt eat them, glad to know that they would grow
Kteach2000 - Name mystery snacks? Something that surprises children when they open it up.
Addie k/mo - we dont....our lunch hour is smack in the middle of the day and it is up to the teacher, so we dont, but some of the classes do
Sandy/K/Mo - yes we have snack in Kdg. and the other grades can bring to eat at recess if healthy
Becky/AL/1 - J - we have snack at 1:30. I think its because we eat lunch at 10:30! Even I am starving by then!
Addie k/mo - we used to have it when our lunch was really early one year and really late the next
Kteach2000 - Lunch at 1030? Gee what time does school start 3 am??? lol
Sandy/K/Mo - we eat lunch at 11 snack at 1
Kteach2000 - Montesourri has lunch at 1130-1230 if parents pack them a sack lunch.
Addie k/mo - kteach, what if they dont bring their lunch?
Kteach2000 - Then they dont eat...Parents know they are responsible for feeding their own children.
Darcy - I did something neat with our class pumpkin last year after Halloween. You take a pumpkin, cut it up into 4ths. Bake it in the oven and then peal off the skin.....
Addie k/mo - thats kinda sad for the kids! i agree that parents need to be responsible though. does it happen often?
Becky/AL/1 - Gosh, I hope parents always send a lunch!
Becky/AL/1 - What is it like when you peel the skin Darcy?
Addie k/mo - kteach, you are the one that has been posting about observing in a montesori school? some people say that is not exactly the way most montessoris are run
J@VA - Darcy how did the pumpkin tast after it was baked?
Darcy - ...still a few pieces of chopped up pumpking in a ziplock bag and reinforce the seams. Have the kids use their fine motor skils to mush the pumpking into mash. Scoop it out and put a little on a graham cracker and then put alittle whipped spray topping on top.
Darcy - tastes good, like squash.
Becky/AL/1 - That sound interesting Darcy. I have never thought of doing anything with the pumpkins. Just the seeds.
Darcy - it is important to reinforce the seams. I learned the hard way!
Kteach2000 - Addie, you are probally right...!
Becky/AL/1 - I bet my kids would love that.
Addie k/mo - not every school does what they say...well you learn from the less than ideal situations too, kteacher! well gotta go...L8R everyone!
Darcy - kids will eat anything on a graham cracker!
Darcy - or something I did last Nov. was to make butter. Very, very easy to do and the kids like to pass the jar around and shake it.
meeha/ece/tx - 'Way-back-when' I was in college "finger jello" was the 'rage' for snacks. It has a bit more 'body' than jigglers, but works on the same principle. One of my textbooks had a recipe for 'finger pudding' in it that went over well, too!
Becky/AL/1 - We used the bread maker to make bread last fall. It was a wonderful math lesson (measuring) and the smell is wonderful!
J@VA - Good Night!
