IteachDI - hi school, teach???
teachkling - yes high school
IteachDI - do you have a support person with you?
teachkling - no not in class with me
teachkling - very small school so we only have the spec. ed. teachers to rely on for assistance when necessary
IteachDI - how far below grade level are most of your students
teachkling - most times I would say a couple
IteachDI - couple of years below??
teachkling - reading level may be further below than mathematics level as they are mainstreamed
IteachDI - 1snut, are you still here?
IteachDI - I find it very difficult to support my kids because of caseloads and enormous paperwork
IteachDI - what levels do you all teach?
IteachDI - elementary, here
teachkling - I am very good friends with the spec. ed. teachers at my school and they feel overwhelmed with paperwork also
mcspeedy - i'm back in a selfcontainedLRE- elementary
Leslie - I am an FIU student
Leslie - just doing some observation hours at a special ed school
mcspeedy - Paper work is still awful
IteachDI - Do any of you have to bill medicaid for your services?
teachkling - no
mcspeedy - no
IteachDI - I heard that the teachers in my county are the only ones having to do that statewide
IteachDI - figures!
teachkling - what state?
IteachDI - Leslie, what do you think of your observations
IteachDI - Have any of you been here before? First time for me
Leslie - I have enjoyed them very much, there are a lot of special kids who love to get attention
teachkling - first time for me too....what state you in IteachDI
Leslie - first time for me too
IteachDI - West Virginia
IteachDI - Where are you teach??
teachkling - Ohio
IteachDI - Leslie, what kind of curriculum does the teacher use?
IteachDI - Gee, teach we are practically neighbors!!!
Leslie - what do you mean curriculum? sorry i'm new to this...lol
teachkling - yep!
IteachDI - Well, like 4 blocks, basal readers, etc....
Leslie - I have no idea
IteachDI - teach, i hear the proficiency tests are a pain over there.
teachkling - you heard right
IteachDI - Does the teacher do small group instruction?
teachkling - such a pain!
IteachDI - my friend's son is in the 5th grade and it sounds awful
Leslie - i have only done 5 hours so far, i went to a physically impaired class and a variance diffifulties class
IteachDI - We also have some nephews in Columbus area.
IteachDI - How are you liking it so far, Leslie
Leslie - I would like to major in variance difficulties but for kinder or first grade
Leslie - i love it!
teachkling - the ones we have are terrible and they are going to be changing them to make it even worse
Leslie - how do you like it, IteachDI?
Leslie - how long have you been teaching for?
IteachDI - teach, are the students in all grades tested, or just 4th and 8th??
IteachDI - I have been teaching for 13 years, i think
teachkling - 4th....6th...9th (taken spring of 8th for first time)
Leslie - what was it like when you started? teach and IteachDI...?
IteachDI - do special ed kids take the test under the same conditions as reg. kids
teachkling - had 12th grade test too but supposedly doing away with it
IteachDI - what do you mean?
teachkling - 9th grade test is going to be phased out and become a 10th grade test
IteachDI - teach, if they don't pass, do they have to go to summer school?
teachkling - some of the 4th grade tests are moving to 3rd
Leslie - did you like it? or did you have to get adpated to it? was it what you expected?
IteachDI - or do they retain the kids that don't pass???
teachkling - the special ed. students take it in a different room--usually spec. ed. classroom
IteachDI - Leslie, I started out in reg. then switched
mrjohn - hello any national boards folks here?
teachkling - many are exempted from some or all sections of the test depending on how their IEPs are written
IteachDI - teaching has become more stressful since i staarted. much more accountability now, NOt a bad thing though
Leslie - did you switch because you wanted to or because they moved you?
IteachDI - I wanted to switch. got my MA in special ed
teachkling - if they didn't pass 4th reading they were to get tutoring over summer....if don't pass 9th by the end of 12th grade they don't graduate
Leslie - do you prefer teaching reg or special ed, IteachDI
IteachDI - not sure, leslie i have been considering moving back to reg. paperwork is getting the vbest of me
IteachDI - I am not a nat'l board person.
Leslie - what type of special ed students do you teach?
IteachDI - I heard it was very expensive to get your nat'l board cert.
IteachDI - i have LD Mildly mentally impaired, and other health impaired
Leslie - I have worked with down syndrome kids and LD and i enjoy both...doing my community hours is what inspired me to go into this field
IteachDI - good for you, leslie
IteachDI - when do you graduate?
Leslie - do you have any suggestions for me, IteachDI?
Leslie - in two years

SBMOM - she is in a self-contained classroom now and pulled out for language arts, p.e., and other electives
SBMOM - yes she self caths with supervision
garf/sped/ga - GREAT!! Are you saying she is included for LA, PE and other electives? What types of assistive technology does she use?

garf/sped/ga - I teach 6-8(grades). I have taught K-12, the only grade I have not taught is 3rd and 5th
SBMOM - yes, she gets around well in her wheelchair, but is about 2 grade levels low

SBMOM - she will be in the eighth grade
SBMOM - she is a whiz on our PC!!
cecesc-pmd - gotta go
garf/sped/ga - She is pretty much self contained th en? What are your plans for her after graduation?
SBMOM - that is what we are thinking about now, garf. she has many strengths but also weaknesses and finding the right program for her is going to be tricky next year!!

SBMOM - no, just LD
garf/sped/ga - @#$%tail party
garf/sped/ga - has she ever tried regular ed with supports?
SBMOM - yes, in elem. ed . she was in inclusion classrooms and struggled tremendously
garf/sped/ga - OIC
SBMOM - her self esteem plummetted!!
garf/sped/ga - Are her reading skills the problem?
garf/sped/ga - OIC
SBMOM - she reads great with low comprehension .
SBMOM - her math skills are her main weakness
garf/sped/ga - Here we have community based vocational training program that some students can participate in.
SBMOM - what is that, garf?
garf/sped/ga - Math skills are a problem with many kids with SB, actually there has been some literature on that.
SBMOM - that's right
SBMOM - her problem solving skills give her problems
garf/sped/ga - It where the students learn a job skill and practice it. I had some visually impaired students participate in that, they were pretty much self contained, but not low enough to qualify for another label.
garf/sped/ga - You mean like computational skills?
SBMOM - no, she has trouble comprehending written material and solving problems in the stories or in math computations too
garf/sped/ga - Have you tried books on tape?
SBMOM - mack, what do you teach?
garf/sped/ga - Math Pad Plus has a way where you can have word problems read to you.
SBMOM - that's a good idea.
garf/sped/ga - If you have a physical impairment, you can qualify for books on tape.
mack/tx - right now all subjects in a juvenile det cntr
SBMOM - I am wondering what program or track to put her on in high school. Do you know the program Plato?
mack/tx - nxt yr 1-6 gt/resource math
garf/sped/ga - never heard of it.
mack/tx - i have trouble typing
SBMOM - that's one she has been using in class. It is a computer program that reads the problems to you. she loves that
