Dave MontrealCan - Hello Omi welcome ot my session
omi - hi
Dave MontrealCan - Hello Lin welcome
Dave MontrealCan - what grades do you both teach?
Lin - Hi, Dave. I don't teach special ed. But I have a 4th grade with a mainstreamed child and I'm lost.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin let me try to help
Dave MontrealCan - Lin what is the child's condition?
Lin - I have 21 other students and this child cannot concentrate long enough to complete anything without me next to him.
omi - well i'm kind of a future teacher right now i teach sunday school but i have a passion for special ed teaching and want to major in that
Dave MontrealCan - Lin could he be add or adhd ?
Dave MontrealCan - Omi that is great are you taking any courses now on special education?
Lin - I've never believed in medication, but if anyone needs it this one does. I've spoken to his mother with his spec. ed teacher. No results.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin doe she have a problem reading ?
omi - no i'm still in high school junior year
Lin - What I need to know is what can I do to help, without meds. He is getting worse. His reading level is 1st grade and has remained stagnant for the last 2 years.
Dave MontrealCan - Omi I would encourage you to go into special education it sounds like you would enjoy it i am actually sight impaired myself and went through regular school from Kindergarten through University
omi - yeah i'm also in special ed so i kind of know what its like
gitu - i would like to pursue a degree in teaching
Dawn - Does anyone know where I could go to chat with other National Board candidates for special education.
gitu - could someone help me
Dave MontrealCan - Lin it is possible that he may be dislexic and if that is the case he may need to be examined would his mom consent to him being assessed by a school psychologist?
omi - gitu what kind of help
Lin - I think he has been. Isn't that part of the evaluation for classification? There is nothing in his IEP to indicate that.
Dave MontrealCan - Gitu where are yo ulocated?
gitu - hi omi i want to become teacher
gitu - i am in Tampa Florida
omi - really cool
Dave MontrealCan - Lin I wonder if he should be evaluated by one of your school psychologists if you have one there would his mom consent to that?
gitu - how long will teaching degree/certificate take?
gitu - omi someone told me it will take 1 year
Lin - Yes, I'm sure she would. She is very cooperative. About everything except any medication. I know she wants to help.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin it is obviously not fair to you and the other 21 students that he should take up so much of your time
omi - one year for what?
gitu - hello omi are you there?
Dave MontrealCan - Lin even if you could get an aid in the classroom with you
omi - uh huh
gitu - one year to get the teaching degree
omi - what through college or a alturnetive rote
Lin - It's not fair to him either. I worry more about his problems in 5th grade and up. I see what I consider learned helplessness. If he can wait long enough, he won't have to complete the work. I don't know if that's true, but ...
gitu - I think from some online program
omi - do you know what online program
Lin - I have it very lucky. I have two other teachers during literacy block. Small groups and plenty of help. It just doesn't seem to be making a difference.
omi - do you have to have a collage degree in something frist
Dave MontrealCan - Lin I think you may want to try ot get the school psychologist involved does he require a lot of attention from you the entire day?
gitu - omi are you teacher?
omi - no
gitu - how long did you take to get the teaching degree?
Lin - Gitu, I know nothing about alternative route, but I went to school for 5 years. Of course I changed my major once.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin where are you located?
Lin - Only if I pursue it. He is not a behavior problem. but I don't like to let him languish.
Dave MontrealCan - Hello TDG welcome
Lin - South Jersey
gitu - Lin, I think now a days one can get online degree for teaching in 1 to 1.5 years
TDG - hi
gitu - is that true?
Lin - But can you get a job with it?
Lin - I had a 4.0 and it still took me two years to find a job.
TDG - I can assume that we are teachers
gitu - ok
Dave MontrealCan - Lin also a good idea for you as well were you aware that there are chatboards from all 50 states here at Tnet even one for New Jersey you may want to post about your situation on that board as well and see what others can share with you
Lin - I don't envy you Dave. Trying to help strangers with very little time. But I appreciate it.
TDG - You had a 4.0 in what state
Dave MontrealCan - TDG i am a consultant here
Lin - I didn't know that. I had better take a look.
Lin - NJ
Dave MontrealCan - Lin here is the link of all chatboards at teachers net http://www.teachers.net/chatboards/
Dave MontrealCan - Lin bookmark this and this will be of great help to you
Lin - Thanks. I know there is no quick fixes. Even his spec. ed teacher is frustrated.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin have you ever taught a sight impaired or blind child?
Lin - No, I haven't. You said you are sight impaired, right?
TDG - I'm in Florida. Currently in school to get my Masters. Trying to apply technology in my field. It seems that things are available but computer is outdated.
Dave MontrealCan - Lin yes and I attended regular school from K through University
Dave MontrealCan - Hello Eddie welcome
omi - i like the smily faces
Eddiehatesdiabetes - hi dave..thanks...good to see ya
Lin - Obviously you made out well, but it was probably more you than your teachers. Some people have great ambition
Dave MontrealCan - Lin i had many wonderful teachers my former 4th and 6th grade teachers were special and I dedicated my first resource mannual I wrote for the classroom teacher to both of them
Lin - Titles?
omi - whats a resource mannual
Eddiehatesdiabetes - trouble with my connection...take care all..
Dave MontrealCan - Lin Title is "Integration A Rewarding Experience"
Dave MontrealCan - Omi a guide for the classroom teacher
omi - oh
Lin - I'll look for it. I need all the help I can get. I've taught for 7 years and this is my first classroom, outside of HS of course which I hated.
omi - what did you teach in high school
Dave MontrealCan - Lin it is not available in stores you need to order it through me and it deals specifically with sight impaired and blind children only
Lin - Engl Comp 101, British Lit and ?
Dave MontrealCan - Hello Sped2 welcome

TDG - I teach a class of 8 EH, SLD and ADD. They range from 60IQ to 100IQ. Add to that bipolar 1 autistic. They are with me all day. They demonstratre no social skills and can not build peer relationships. They will do anyhting to work with you oe on one or with technology.
Dave MontrealCan - Sped wow i am glad you have also found the mailrings too
sped2 - tdg sounds challenging
Dave MontrealCan - Paulie did you get my pm with the question
omi - interesting
sped2 - tdg do u write behavior plans?
Paulie - no
Dave MontrealCan - Paulie do you know Joe he won a copy of my resource mannual and I emailed him and he never responded I need ot get his snail mail address so I can mail him the book
Paulie - yes I got it lol was trying to figure what that meant. . .
TDG - My priority is to find their strenght and get them back into a reg. class. Looking back at previous years these kids do so much better on Test when taught in a reg. classroom. I do write behavior paln and modifications daily. I allow the kids to chhos i target behavior they would like to improve. I enjoy watching a child try earnestly to work on his bplan. Sad when they best will never be good enough for the large classes we have
Dave MontrealCan - Paulie I saw your response ot him on the chatboard and thought you knew him and maybe you could get in touch with him and tell him he needs to claim his prize he guessed correctly
sped2 - What kind of format do u follow I am trying a task analysis with my kiddo that is ED
Paulie - I do not know him I did not remember responding to him I did see your post and that he won
Dave MontrealCan - Lol Paulie I just hope he writes me lol I wrote him and do not have his address
TDG - Florida proveides us with several templates to follow and a manual that stays in our guidance department. I teach the upper garde and i have apeer teacher whpo does the younger ones , we create a lot of theing s we do
Dave MontrealCan - Sped have you ever taught a sight impaired or blind child
sped2 - neat I do not have that much support from guidance u are fortunate
Paulie - Dave, I guess u need to reply again at Tnet board and ask him to send his school address
sped2 - Dave I have taught children with perceptual difficulties
Dave MontrealCan - Paulie I will do that hope it works
sped2 - TDG So far my plan is helping with this kid
Paulie - I hate this board I typed and sent a message and it never appears
TDG - improvement comes when you relize changes does not mean error
sped2 - intersting insight tdg
Paulie - This baord has stood still for too long tonight sigh
Dave MontrealCan - Paulie which one?
sped2 - well I do not think that I will be as lucky tomorrow and get to sleep in because of the ice
TDG - With most of my kids I can use the sane plan but i alwsy have two or three who parents aks where did they come from call 911 so I can get help befor In kill this child. I try not to call these parent much. they don't know what else to do.
