Check the meeting schedule for future meetings

Kathleen - Hi! The room is available for beginning and student teachers to chat, unmoderated this time.
Kathleen - You may begin chatting at any time. In the future, the mentor/s will be present. Tonight is for open chat.
Kathleen - Is anyone facing a specific challenge you could tell the others about to get the discussion started?
Gennifer - I am a first year art teacher on a waiver.. Any ideas for ML King Day?
johnny - I am..I am a student teacher in a kindergarten room. My way of teaching is not the same as my mentor, I'd like to make some changes..any early childhood people?
johnny - any advice about changing the routine, schedule, etc??
Kathleen - I have early childhood background, johnny. What is your question?
Kathleen - Gennifer, I'm thinking. That's not something I've done, art project for MLK day. Let's see if someone can come up with something during the hour. Repeat your question in a bit.
johnny - Well..basically, the class is exteremly worksheet oritented. I'd like to bring in some more hands on materials, give them some choices in what centers they goto and have the children write in journals more often. all of this would be new to them.
Kathleen - Gennifer, could the kids design posters with slogans related to MLK's message?
Kathleen - johnny, new is okay. Do you think your coop teacher will be less than welcoming of the different (but appropriate) activities?
Stanley - Gen, what's a T on a waiver?
johnny - She stresses that she encourages new things. I wonder though if she might be less than happy when i change some stuff. She's told me, 'when ur ready to teach, I have plenty of worksheets for you." She doesn't teach in themes or units, but by letters only, but in isolation. I'm more used to teaching in units..
Gennifer - We are a very small school with a very small budget. The kids really enjoy making crafts....
Stanley - Kate, Kathleen -- Greetings!  San Diego had a veritable DELUGE today!
Kathleen - johnny, do you have a liason prof from the college who can help, intervene?
Kate - What happened Stanley
Kathleen - Stanley, I heard about the San Diego weather. Stanely, are you the same Stanley from substitute group?
johnny - Actually no. That's a long story, but my prof is not going to be of help.
Kathleen - johnny, I'm going to give you at least one url for an article by Lillian Katz that you should print out. So watch for it, I'm searching now.
johnny - kathleen, Great...Lillian Katz is excellent! Thanks!
coachjw - This is cool. There were like NO new or student teachers here on 12/14...
coachjw - I guess everyone was burnt out after last semester's finals!
Stanley - johnny, I had rocky S/Ting experiences. I never asked my liason prof to intervene. It was a mistake!
Kate - Coach...where are you from?
johnny - This is my first one..I just found this site abot 3 weeks ago. Its great
coachjw - I'm in IL, Kate
Stanley - Kathleen, 1 in the same!
coachjw - and yes, I am a HS boys' track and field coach in IA
Kate - Cool, I'm from PA
johnny - Stanley, if things were different, I could ask for some intervention, but it's really not possible. I have support from several profs that are aiding me, and teacher friends that are giving me ideas.
coachjw - where are you at Kate?
Kathleen - Another look at what young children should be learning by Lillian Katz, ERIC DIGEST: http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed430735.html (johnny, you could e-mail me for a list: kathleen@teachers.net or copy the urls from the screen) I'm very happy that you know about Lillian Katz!
Kate - Pittsburgh, PA
coachjw - cool beans... what college/university did you attend?
Kathleen - Please feel free to post questions, ideas, etc. for the group to consider and respond
johnny - kathleen, thanks! I'll be sure and check it out. Would it be easier for you to email me the list?
Kate - Duquesne University...it's a private school....I still go there, how about you?
coachjw - WB, vee
Kathleen - johnny, yes, e-mail would be easier for you especially. I might continue to post them here, though, and I'll paste them into an e-mail box, so write to me.
coachjw - I attend Western Illinois University
coachjw - this teacher's certificate is my second undergrad degree (English Ed)
JD - Hi everyone! I am a first year 1st grade bilingual teacher. In need of help.
coachjw - secondary
Kathleen - The ERIC sites are terrific resources http://www.ericsp.org
johnny - kathleen - I'm printing that article now!  I"ll go ahead and email you.
Stanley - Kathleen, maybe I missed it, but who is Lillian Katz?
Kate - Wow COACH, very impressive...what was your first degree?
coachjw - ERIC sites are terrific resources
JD - any first year teachers here
coachjw - my first degree was in speech communication with a specialization in public relations and a journalism minor
Gennifer - jd... i am a first year teacher
coachjw - from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale
Kathleen - The Project Approach by Lillian Katz http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed368509.html
johnny - stanley - Dr. Katz is a very well known and respected early childhood expert. She is amazing!!
coachjw - i'm looking to make a move to MN and am working on my teacher licensure requirements for that state
JD - Gennifer how are things going? Are you a 1st gr. teacher
Kathleen - Stanley, Lillian Katz is an internationally known and respected expert in the field of early childhood education. johnny is student teaching in k under a teacher who relies very much upon worksheets
Kate - Geez, coach...I'm impressed, I have a dual major of Elementary and Special Education
coachjw - Kate, what level do you want to teach at?
johnny - kathleen -- relies heavily on worksheets is a HUGE understatement. That is her curriculum It's amazing. It's 100% counter to what I believe and how I've been taught.
Stanley - JD, I sub quite a bit bilingually. Where are you located?
coachjw - I'm impressed, Kate! You will be highly sought after with those certificates
Gennifer - jd.. actually i am a first year teacher in art. I am on a waiver hopefully next year i will have a grade level classroom!! How about you?
coachjw - are there any english/language arts teachers in here?
Kathleen - me too, johnny. that's a shame. maybe you can influence her in a positive way.
JD - no kidding I am in Mass. What about you
Kathleen - Encouraging Creativity in EC Classrooms by Lillian Katz http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed389474.html
Kate - Well, I think 2nd grade would be perfect, kids still like their teacher's slightly at that age!
Gennifer - i am in TN
Kathleen - Curriculum Disputes in EC Ed. by Lillian Katz http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed436298.html
johnny - I hope so. It ought to be interesting. She keeps wanting me to take over the classroom more, but I hesitate b/c of the class behavior and the lack of discipline, and my disbelief in how she wants things done.
Kate - Gen, where at in TN?
JD - Gennifer I am a first grade bilingual teacher. I too have a waiver for a year. I am not sure what they are going to do nect year
Stanley - Worksheets in K... hmmmm. I'm 53, but THAT must be a REAL old-timer! {G}
Gennifer - jd.. my main concern this year was to get my foot in the door!
coachjw - You sound like you have your hands full, johnny!
Kate - Thanks, coach...I hope you are right...I'm a little worried because most beginning teachers are 22 and fresh out of college...I will be 26!
coachjw - How much longer do you have to be with this teacher? Or are you just starting?
Gennifer - Kate, Marshall Co
Stanley - San Diego, JD. "Waivers" are, I take it, what they call "Emergency Credentials" here?
coachjw - Kate, I'm 28 and will be 29 before I begin teaching
johnny - I do!
Kate - Genn, what big city is it near?
coachjw - And feel better than ever!
JD - I think they may be able to give me a waiver next year as well because they need a teacher
Gennifer - Kate. It is about 45 south of Nashville
JD - Stan will you be looking for a position
coachjw - I just began my student teaching experience this past Monday
Kate - Coach...I student teach next January...
Gennifer - Jd.. There are 2 teachers retiring this year so maybe that will work out!
Stanley - johnny, Why can't you go to your liason? Sounds to me like you're going to be in LOTS of stress in this situation.
Kate - coach...how is it so far?
johnny - coach -- great! We're in the same boat (s.t. that is) How's it going so far?
coachjw - That's really cool that you're in here, Kate.
JD - that would be great! What gr. levels
johnny - It's a really really complicated situation. We're not really in agreement. She thinks this lady is great..Let's just say, I can't.
coachjw - i begin teaching freshman Lit and Language next week
JD - I am in the process of getting certified but it is taking a while.
Kathleen - Protecting Children from Inappropriate Practices by Sue Bredekamp: Protecting Children from Inappropriate Practices. ERIC Digest. (i'm e-mailing these to you johnny, no need to copy)
JD - which would you prefer
coachjw - and a jr./sr. Expository Writing class
Stanley - JD, Yes, I had a temporary contract for much of last yr. I've some "ideas" to see if I can slide in the crack for '01/'02. But NOT bilingually -- my Spanish is not of that quality.
johnny - kathleen --- Great!! I think I've done more researching, thinking, questioning in the past few weeks than I ever did during my course work!
coachjw - and i am scheduled for 12 weeks, ending on 3/30... how about you, johnny?
Kate - Hey coach I have a horrid english class this semester...Advanced writing with a teacher who is WAY TOO proper.
Gennifer - jd.. my situation is really crazy! I will have to go back to college this summer and take 2 classes to continue teaching art.. But I can leagally teach K-8/// What's wrong with that picture??
johnny - I have to split it 8 weeks each.
johnny - Do you stay in the same class or w/ the same teacher for the 12 weeks coach?
coachjw - lol - i have had a positive experience in my english ed classes and they have given me confidence because
JD - I am in a Portuguese bilingual class. Although at this point I would enjoy a Spanish class
LinaWut - I like my spanish classes that I have taken
coachjw - i have learned that once you give the students confidence to convey what it is they want to say then
Gennifer - jd.. English is all I know!!!
coachjw - you can attempt to help them learn mastery of the standard american english dialect
coachjw - fear the red pen no more
Stanley - JD, I know a T from Brazil that has tweeked her Portuguese enough to gain B-Spanish certification.
Kate - Coach, are you really a coach?
coachjw - peer editing, positive and constructive comments
coachjw - yeppers, Kate. i coach HS boys' track and field
JD - wow that is crazy. I will be happy when I am done getting my certification. I have to get certified in Elementary and Bilingual
coachjw - right across the river in IA
Kate - Wow, so your smart and buff...nice very nice!
coachjw - JD will be in demand too
Stanley - johnny, I'm glad you've at least DISCUSSED your feelings with your liason. As a S/T I didn't even do THAT!
coachjw - thanks Kate! i run with my athletes, so it helps me keep in shape
johnny - Stanley -- Well I did, but it made things a lot worse. When you say, liason, what exactly do you mean??
Kate - The best kind of coach is one who participates, coach.
JD - Stan I need to be certified to keep this position and so I have to take a Portuguese section and if I want to teach Span I need to take the Spanish section
coachjw - it has helped me, Kate
coachjw - coaching helped me decide to go back and get my teaching certificate
johnny - At my university, we have what are called, "field coordinators" Which means, their only job is to place people in the field. They don't teach, most haven't taught much at all and really dont have a good feel for the school environment.
coachjw - it seems like the demand for ESL teachers is great everywhere, JD
JD - I am thinking of getting certified in both Portuguese as well as Spanish. We will see what happens
coachjw - at least here in IL, IA, and the state i'm looking to teach in... MN
Kate - Stanley, do you teach?
johnny - jd, coach -- definately, I am wishing that I knew more spanish!!
JD - really, I didn't think so.
coachjw - lol... me too, johnny
Stanley - I used Kathleen's term. Here we called them S/Ting Supervisors as opposed to our Master Ts. The Supers were the program reps who came in weekly to observe us. They were also supposed to serve as intermediaries if necessary.
coachjw - i have two years from hs, but that's from a long time ago
coachjw - i do use working in retail from time to time, however
Gennifer - Kate-It is great here in TN you would love it!
johnny - stanley -- I wish!! That sounds like a great situation..they come twice a semester to evaluate. That's about it.
coachjw - you might check out some websites too to see if you can find any additional information, johnny
Stanley - Kate, I'm in my 5th yr of subbing, having had a "leave replacement" or temporary contract for much of last yr. I'm hopeful for NEXT yr, however!
coachjw - but these sites will help anyone on here if they aren't already familiar with them
johnny - coach -- i surely will.
coachjw - http://www.educationworld.com
Kathleen - I'm employed here, not the webmaster. I'm responsible for all live events, promote the site, pr stuff, etc.
coachjw - http://www.sitesforteachers.com
Kate - Stanley, what state are you in?
coachjw - http://www.educationplanet.com
Gennifer - Kate- That's a great idea! just make sure that when you come that you don't come a holiday week end! Go to Pigon Forge instead of Gatlinburg! Its 10 times better and only about 10 mins away!
coachjw - and of course, http://www.teachers.net
johnny - kathleen -- i see, thanks! You're doing a great job..this site is really excellent!
johnny - coach -- ill check them out tonight! Thanks!
coachjw - http://www.teach-nology.com is a good one too
Stanley - johnny, The intermediary part was fine -- had I availed myself of it. However, the weekly observation part was, I thought, a bit much...
Kathleen - johnny, you know about our early childhood chatboard http://teachers.net/mentors/early_childhood and ec mailring http://teachers.net/mailrings ?
Kathleen - johnny, ec group meets here every Tuesday, same time
Kathleen - Teachers.Net IS special!
coachjw - Kathleen, do the new and student teachers meet here once monthly?
Stanley - I'm in San Diego, Kate. How about you, & what do you teach?
Kathleen - I have to get Lillian Katz to do a live chat here.
Kathleen - coach, yes, every month second Thursday.
Kate - Gen, thanks for the advice, it's hard to make plans when I'm so far away in PA. Any more advice?
johnny - that'd be amazing to have her here!!
coachjw - Thank you, Kathleen!
Stanley - johnny, you said THAT right about T.Net!!
coachjw - i'll have to come back to vent or catch up with Johnny
johnny - for sure coach!! we'll have to stay in touch!
Kate - Stanley, I live in Pittsburgh, PA and I am attending school for both elementary and special education.
Kathleen - We've had Hap Palmer, Sam Meisels, Howard Gardner, Alfie Kohn, Harry Wong, many more. check out the ec section of the archives http://teachers.net/archive Early Childhood chat transcripts are stored there, too
Kathleen - LOL, yes, we'll have to hear more about how johnny does in that situation
Gennifer - There is this great Pancake house in Gatlinburg I don't remember the name of it but people stand in line for about 2 hours every morning just to eat pancakes!! They are worth it!
johnny - thanks! I'll keep people up to date if they really want to know
Kathleen - johnny, we do! e-mail if you wish.
coachjw - i'd love to catch up with you again for an update, johnny!
Kate - Thanks Gen...I'll look into it...I love pancakes!!
Kathleen - Gennifer, did you get any ideas for art project related to MLK day?
johnny - coach -- thanks! me also..
Gennifer - kathleen,, No not yet! I still need a craft for the kids to do for MLK Day
coachjw - cool beans... i'm coachjw1@hotmail.com
Kathleen - johnny, the articles I sent are related more to philosophy than specific lessons and activities. Use the Teachers.Net ec resources for activity ideas (lessons bank too!)
Stanley - Well, Kate, I'd say it is virtually CERTAIN you could get a SPED position in our area. I had a number that I could have claimed @ the start of this yr -- because they were NOT filled by properly credentialed Ts. However, I don't want to return to school
johnny - kathleen -- i just got it..it looks great. I really appreciate it!! coach--cool, ill email you!
Kate - Gen...I have a book for crafts and holidays...let me grab it...I'll see what ideas it has...crafts, right?
Kathleen - Gennifer, for what age students??
coachjw - cool, i truly look forward to hearing from my new friend who is going through student teaching pains also!
Gennifer - kate- crafts CHEAP!!!
johnny - coach - me too!
coachjw - actually, i'm really excited about the challenge of teaching my own lessons within the prescribed curriculum
Kate - Stan...I am nervous about getting a job when I finish because I will be 26, not the traditional 22 year old fresh out of school.
Kathleen - what age, Gennifer?
Gennifer - Kathleen- I teach K-5 ALL!
coachjw - Gennifer, i'm working on a poster for a bulletin board in my new classroom
Stanley - Gen, is the craft for Primary? Perhaps a post on that board? Also, you might want to search for the term "King" on several of the boards: Something might already be there!
coachjw - i JUST went down to the Walgreen's and bought posterboard and a glue stic
coachjw - and i'm sitting here cutting pics out of magazines
coachjw - johnny, are you spending every night ironing clothes?
Kate - Okay Gen...I grabbed the book let me look it up.
Kathleen - PLEASE sign up for any mailrings which could be helpful to you: http://teachers.net/mailrings also linked from the top of each page on the site
coachjw - i think right now i'm surprised at the amount of time things like that are taking
Stanley - Kate, 26??? LOL -- I'm 53! Yet, in our leviathan district I know subs 47, 49, & 57 that were all given contracts for this yr. Plus, with PA being a "4 yr state," you'll tend to be more cheap for them to hire.
coachjw - preparing my lunch, choosing clothes, trying to get up early enough to do everything i didn't do the night before...
coachjw - where are you, Stanley? are you in PA also?
Kathleen - Gennifer, this is too simple, but you could have the kids make stick puppets of MLK and use them to speak phrases, messages he would say. Perhaps for use in classroom or school when students witness someone being unkind, etc.
Kate - Really Stan, cool!
Stanley - coach, you sound like ME when it comes to doing "prep!" Much as I love the wee ones & do well with them [as a sub], I'm ALL thumbs when it comes to the prep...
Kate - Okay Gen...there are three ideas, one is a book and talk the other two are activites...let me read on ...
Gennifer - thanks for looking
coachjw - lol - i really am surprised... i didn't think this would be the portion of student teaching that would surprise me
Kathleen - Kate is going to save the day
Kathleen - Jet, welcome to the beginning & student teachers chat
Kathleen - coach, busy life, eh?
Stanley - Kate, Seriously -- look into SoCA! Plus, didn't I hear somewhere that PA is considered to have a [relatively] crowded T market?
Kate - Please don't be so confident...Kathleen...I will try though!!
coachjw - Kathleen, this is the easy part
coachjw - I was commuting 80 miles, one-way, twice weekly to school as a full-time student
coachjw - working 15 - 20 hours part-time in retail
coachjw - and coaching track (spent three years as a cross country volunteer asst.)
Stanley - coach, I'm in San Diego. Never been east of the MI River, either! [Been WAY far west, however.]
coachjw - and i have a 3.643 -- it was hight
coachjw - Stanley, i've never been west of kansas!
johnny - sorry for the absence! I was on the phone w/ a teacher friend, comparing notes from the day!
coachjw - i've been to PA to run in the Penn Relays
coachjw - no prob, johnny
johnny - Coach -- I am amazed at how tired I am from s.t.!! I I'm hurtin big time in the mornings to stay awake and getting nice clothes ready stinks!
Kathleen - be sure to tell your teaching friends about Teachers.Net
coachjw - i can totally relate to what you said about waking up, johnny!
coachjw - and will do, Kathleen
Kathleen - Is Kate typing?
Kate - Okay, Gen...The second one is a multiculturalbracelet idea with bulletin board idea...the third is explaining the science of color and how as people moved closer to the equator became darker...there is a lot on Melanin and things...there's much more detail let me know what you think...I can give more detail and even a book called What is MLK day.
johnny - I'm used to staying up until 2-3 every night, going to class, then sleeping and doing my easy workstudy job!! Now I am ready for bed by 9!! haha
Gennifer - johnny.. try being a first year teacher with a 6 month old !
coachjw - i'm a night owl, johnny, but i've been trying to get to bed before midnight and wake up at 6:30 a.m.
Kathleen - what is the multi-cultural bracelet activity like, Kate?
coachjw - WOO, Gennifer! you win!!!!!
Gennifer - i thought so!
Stanley - coach, johnny: I've NO doubts whatsoever about S/Ting being **THE** toughest thing I've encountered so far in teaching.
Kathleen - ugh, Gennifer, that IS difficult!
johnny - me too exactly coach! I'm drinking my pepsi in the morn, trying to have energy! People call me wanting to go do stuff..there's just no way..too pooped.
coachjw - THAT'S encouragin, Stanley!
Kathleen - Gennifer, maybe the kids could make a peace bracelet or necklace, now what would they put on it??
johnny - stanley--I AGREE! I worked in a private school setting and yeah it was hard, but this is crazy!
coachjw - hear that, johnny? we just have to make it through student teaching!!!
johnny - does it get easier??? Please tell me it does! I have a feeling though it won't..
Stanley - Awkward timing, Gen.
coachjw - i think it will, mostly because i will have a little more freedom after student teaching, but...
Gennifer - a piece braclet is a wonderful idea! I have tons of beads in my closet!!
coachjw - i know i will ALWAYS be a lifelong learner!
Kathleen - Some nights we have a mentor here for this chat, from http://www.inspiringteachers.com/
Kathleen - phew! thanks, Kate! Gennifer seems happy now
coachjw - that's a wonderful site also, Kathleen
Stanley - Gen, a former subbing colleague of mine just delivered early on into her 1st yr. I urged her to take PLENTY of time on maternity leave. Don't know what happened, however.
johnny - That's the way to be coach..I know it'll get easier..I'm a little overloaded at the sheer amount of stuff to prepare, know, teach, understand, organize..etc etc etc..
Kathleen - coach, that's a good attitude, need that to be a good teacher
coachjw - check out http://www.adprima.com ... also has wonderful ideas for new teachers
coachjw - i'm looking forward to learning more in my student teaching experience, johnny. things like
Gennifer - i had the baby in early summer right after student teaching so the timing was perfect!
Kate - Gen...The kids make the beads out of flour and salt...when they are finished they let them dry and string them with pipe cleaners...they paint them the colors of different flags, or national colors...they pik a few to make into face and paint them the correct color...they add hair and a face...they can be hung on a B board with messages of peace from MLK and his speeches, what do you think?
coachjw - pacing, dealing with all kinds of students
Stanley - johnny, Most complain GREATLY about their 1st contracted yr. Maybe I'll sing a different tune later, but I think for ME that won't the tussle I experienced as a S/T.
coachjw - preach on, Stanley!
johnny - stanley - are you teaching now? That's what I've head too, the first year is tough. I look back during my course work and wonder why I didn't do more preparing, getting ideas ready, making folders..
Gennifer - kate.. sounds like a good idea. but how do they mold the beads?
Kathleen - Kate, that's a great activity, I'm going to send it out through the mailrings
coachjw - johnny, i'm trying to get organized
Stanley - coach, I've been scarfing up all these URLs you've been posting. I'll check them out later...
Kathleen - Kate, is there a recipe for the beads?
johnny - coach - i agree. I have learned so much during the past few weeks..Things to do, and I have lots of ideas to try and give a shot. Let me know if you figure out to get organized! I'm still working on it.
coachjw - i bought a plastic file case/box with a handle, hanging fiels
coachjw - files
coachjw - and that's cool, Stanley... i hope you find some cool stuff
coachjw - i know i did
frank History-Nut - coach- hey one ques is it ssible to get a teaching job in ny?
Kathleen - I think Gennifer ran out to make the beads!
coachjw - lol @ johnny - i have TWO day planners
johnny - coach --what's your major? what do u plan on teaching? I know you posted it once, but I can't rememer..
coachjw - i'm not sure, frank -- i'm in the midwest
Kate - Gen, I guess they roll like play doh...I don't know...maybe you should give it a try first..
coachjw - but you could check http://www.edweek.com
johnny - maybe thats the key! TWO day planners..
coachjw - http://www.k12jobs.com
Gennifer - i'll experiment!
coachjw - and i'm in english ed - secondary, johnny
Kathleen - If time is short, couldn't you use manufactured beads?
Kathleen - Good luck with it, Gennifer
coachjw - AND i have a ongoing TO DO list, johnny
frank History-Nut - hmm thanx fohe info.
coachjw - no prob, frank
johnny - same here coach..
coachjw - teachers.net has job postings too, frank
johnny - gets longer the more i cross stuff off.
Kathleen - I have to leave, feel free to continue, and return on the second Thursday of each month! bye and good luck. johnny, keep us posted!
Gennifer - i think i will use some beads that were donated to the class! That may be easier.
Kate - Here's the recipe...1 part flour to 1/2 part salt...go to it bead makers
Stanley - johnny, I'm SUBBING -- uppercase because I work so many days: 237 in Y2K. Personally, as a S/T, I never felt free to experiemnt -- & that's how *I* have to learn. Plus, I was just TOO green then: Virtually all of my classmates had worked as parapros &
Kathleen - http://teachers.net/jobs . You can sign up for e-mail alerts of new job posts by regions. Bye!
johnny - kathleen--thank you so much for your support!! I sure will! thanks!
Kate - Gen, Any beads would work, I think...
Kathleen - Thanks to all who participated and supported others tonight
Kate - Bye Kathleen, good luck!
coachjw - Take care and hopefully we'll be able to give you an update in another month or so!
coachjw - we've gotta support each other, don't we?
johnny - Stanley -- that's what I feel too. Like I said, i have private school experience where I'm really comfy, but in this environment I'm REALLY uneasy and frankly, not confident.
Stanley - ...&/or had subbed. They were able to hit the decks running, while I just wasn't "there"...
frank History-Nut - see coach I am orig a Crim Justice here in but burned out doesnt interest me anre, I always have wanted to be a hist teacher
coachjw - i understand, this is a career change for me as well
coachjw - are you in NY now, frank?
frank History-Nut - what major/ change?
Kate - Man...everyone is leaving!!!
coachjw - I'm not (yet), Kate!
coachjw - i was in advertising and pr and now i'm almost an english/language arts teacher
coachjw - i didn't stray too far
frank History-Nut - yup herein buffalo, i have beening for the sta police/ corrections luck
Stanley - johnny, I know feeling "comfortable" is relative. However, I suspect you've a good SENSE of what to do because of your experience. I didn't, & I therefore didn't act intuitively.
Kate - Oh...good coach!
johnny - stanley -- i think you're right on. Once I start taking over, im sure it'll be just fine.
coachjw - i've been working real hard on my MN teacher licensure and have one contract offer and an interview with a school district in april
johnny - coach -- so youre a good motivator I guess for you kids..you can sell them on anything..haha..sorry..bad humor..
coachjw - so i'm hoping that i will have an additional offer and decision made by may
frank History-Nut - big change for me but still yng
coachjw - and lol @ johnny -- actually, i don't do bad at motivating my athletes
Kate - Hey, are we having a meeting in the meeting room?
coachjw - how old, frank? i'm 28
coachjw - i think so, Kate
frank History-Nut - 26- coach- butne prob my prnts dnt thnk g idea gng back to scl and wasting more monhey dont understand
Stanley - johnny, in MY case I "had" to be the only T in the room, something techically "illegal" here. Plus I **HAVE** to use my intuition in order to be "believable" to the kids. And HOW do you have intuition when you've no data base of experiences? Those were
coachjw - i can attest to the financial hardships going back to school can put on you, but i know it will be worth it for me
Kate - I guess we both like purple, huh? LOL
Stanley - ...my dilemmas
coachjw - maybe not, Kate!
Kate - BOO HOO
johnny - those are good points stanley..I think it's important to be believable..I guess to be believable to the kids, you've gotta believe in what you're teaching, doing.
coachjw - you have experience, Stanley...
coachjw - we're still here for you, Kate
coachjw
Kate - I KNEW I could count on my old buddies.....
coachjw - yep - chatting and cutting out pics, words, titles...
Kate
Stanley - coach, but I HAD virtually **NO** experience in the schools or with kids prior to my S/Ting: I'm 53 & childless, having worked with adults in previous careers.
coachjw - sounds like you made the adjustment just fine, Stanley
Stanley - johnny, kids are MASTERS @ seeing thru something that's not real...
coachjw - i consider myself lucky... this will be my fifth track season -- it seems weird 'cuz i've been coaching since '97, but count 'em on your fingers
coachjw - five
johnny - stanley--that is the truth..kids are amazing!!
coachjw - 97, 98, 99, 00, and now 01
Kate - Wow, you guys are so inspirational...
johnny - anyone use aol instant messenger here?
coachjw - i do
coachjw - Jwill10391, but i don't get on too often now 'cuz most of the kids at the hs i coach at get on and i can never get off
Stanley - coach, But I had to get it subbing whereas my classmates by & large entered S/Ting with such experience, gained from having worked as parapros.
Kate - coach...did you see my smilely faces? Thanks...they are cool!
coachjw - i'm usually on after 10 and off before midnight
coachjw - cool beans, Kate!
johnny - lol at coach..good point..mine is arzcardinals
Kate - I subbed as a para this past year...God bless paras!!!
coachjw - Stanley, the university i'm attending now requires field experience BEFORE student teaching
johnny - same here--we had to do 2 field experiences b/f our student teaching..
coachjw - i think that it's the perfect opportunity for people to KNOW if they really want to teach
Kate - Coach I have to put in 30 hours of field experience each semester before I student teach!!
coachjw - i did 20 contact hours at middle level and 20 at hs
Stanley - Kate, inspirational? WOW -- I'm used to having spitwads shot @ me! [Actually that is **PURELY** a joke, for those of you who've not subbed.]
coachjw - lol @ stanley
coachjw - i will try to catch you on aol im sometime, johnny
Kate - That's 240 field hours before student teaching!!! I am down to my last 30
johnny - well, it's been really good talking to all of you. I do need to get going though..Good luck to everyone and enjoy teaching..Thanks for all the support!
coachjw - whew, Kate!
coachjw - good luck, johnny! i hope to catch up with you soon!
Stanley - coach/Kate, I also did the field experience. However, MOST of mine was 1:1 tutoring. That's NATURAL for me. The classroon thing isn't. Plus, most contracted Ts I know give LOTS of responsibility to their parapros.
Kate - Stanley...you stay, thats admirable...stick and stay it's bound to pay...oh no...I've turned into my mother!!!
johnny - Thanks coach--good luck w/ s.t.
coachjw - thank you
coachjw - lol @ kate
coachjw - two day planners, johnny!
Stanley - johnny, BEST of luck to you. If you wish to send me E-mail, I post often on the SubBoard.
Kate
coachjw - or at least one with an ongoing to-do list
Stanley - Kate, stick & stay? OMG -- did the lid come off the Elmer's in my back pocket? {G}
johnny - stanley --thanks..you too. subbing is an amazingly hard job, been there. Good luck w/ it.
johnny - ill go out and buy another planner too..lol!
Kate - lol@ Stan....let's hope not!!!
coachjw - lol @ stanley. kate has become bossy with her new buds!
johnny - okay, for real..gotta go..bye everyone!
coachjw - 'night
Kate - WHAT....me , bossy? Never!!
coachjw - i'll be leaving next
coachjw - good thing this is my first week and i've got lessons prepared for next week
coachjw - still have to pick out tomorrow's clothes and iron them AFTER
Kate - It's been nice chatting....best to the both of you!
Stanley - Kate, have you been given lots of leeway in your field experience?
coachjw - the local news -- i don't miss that for anybody... gotta catch the weather and sports
coachjw - Good night, Kate and likewise
Kate - No, Stan...to tell you the truth...it is horrid...
Stanley - coach, have a GREAT Fri -- & looooong weekend!
Kate - Bye coach
coachjw - thanks... same to you, Stanley and good night, Kate!
coachjw - good luck to you both!
Kate - Thanks
Stanley - Well, what would it take for you to sub when not in classes? Or, have you worked as a parapro?
Kate - Para
Stanley - Parapro, as in instructional/classroom aide.
Kate - Yep...the experience has made me truly appreciate the certificate I will have
Stanley - Well, you should be about as prepared as possible for actual S/Ting. When do you start?
Kate - Man...that took him like forever to log off!
Kate - I don;t start until next January because I have the double major and I have 3 more special ed classes next semester before I student teach....I'm ready though...I've been in college for 7 years...I used to have a psycology major!
Kate - I think you should write a book.
Kate - People would buy it!! It would inspirational!!!
Stanley - I was also a Psych major. Do you have year around schools there? If so, could you sub during the summer? Also, will your SPED certification allow you to take a classroom in other states?
Kate - People need more inspiration!
Stanley - The deadlines would KILL me -- I can only "write" [???] when moved. But, seriously, inspirational???
Kate - We do not have year round school, but my certification will be good most everywhere in the US...I don't want to move though...I want to stay close to home...my mom has bad arthritis and bursitis as wall as bad eyes and diabetes(since age 17)...My step dad takes good care of her, but he's not going to be here forever ( he's 30 years older than her)...I want to be here for her...she's ALWAYS been there for me, I owe her big!!!
Kate - You could write about your life...I only know a litlle and I'm inspired!
Stanley - Hey, now **THAT'S** "inspiration," Kate!
Stanley - Hmmm... make me feel older than 53! LOL!
Stanley - BTW, my "THAT'S" post was referring to your relationship with your mom...
Kate - Thanks...my fiance...has BIG issues with my "roots" here in PA...I say too bad...She had been my mom for 25 years and though all I ever needed she had been here to turn my frowns around...if he doesn't get it...I guess we will be together to pick the pieces up again after his departure...his choice...I'm not going to be like 70 and regret that I left my mom and best friend ever after all she has sacrificed for me...I love her too much...
Kate - Don't feel old....53? You a have about 53 good years left in ya!
Stanley - Diabetes is RAMPANT on my mom's side of the family. She was insulin dependent for about 30 yrs, making it thru until her mid 70's. She finally had a sudden, UNEXPECTED heart attack -- I'm told, quite typical or diabetics.
Kate - My mom is 49...going on 65, unfortunately
Kate - Oh, she must of had type 2 diabetes...My mom has Type 1 which is also Juvenille Diabetes, because you get it as a child!! Both are horrid diseases!!
Stanley - Mom became brittle with time, but her most common problem was usually LOW blood sugar. You know, the people that call diabetes a "healthy" disease are **SO** mistaken. It is **ALWAYS** working a number on tiny capillaries -- ergo the problems with feet,
Stanley - ...hand, eyes, kidneys, & hearts.
Stanley - BTW, IMO you're making the right "decision," if that's what it comes to, re your boyfriend. We've but 2 parents; mates... well, if "one" doesn't understand, then another will...
Kate - Yeah, my mom had to have a operation on her eyes and almost went blind...she can see out of one eye now, but not very well out of the other....life is so mysterious....I bet that someone did find a cure, they were probably paid off...all of these diseases are like population control...sadly!
Kate - But...about the book....when will you start?
Kate - I feel the same way...no one is more important to me than dear old mom!
Stanley - Hmmmm... don't know about population control, but I strive to stay as active as I can, what with the genes I'm probably carrying. My 1 sib's an M.D., & she says adult onset diabetes virtually NEVER strikes someone slender.
Kate - Well, good luck then....Type one skips generations...it's my kids that I worry about.
Kate - Define slender....ideal weight...ot thinner?
Stanley - Ah, the flattery here. {G} I "write" on the SubBoard here, if you ever THINK you want more than you undoubtedly do! LOL
Kate - No..no...no book.....I want to see a book....I promise that I will come to San Diego to be the first person at you book signing celebration...how 'bout it?
Kate
Stanley - Kate, I'm not sure. But, I'm 5'10"-5'11", & I've NEVER weighed more than 165. Moreover, for 5 yrs or so at, at least, I've been in the 145-150 range. Should have better muscle tone, but my pulse has been 60 or less for eons -- I swim & at least USED to
Kate - Man...what a pulse...your gonna live forever....more opportunity for a book signings....I'll help you get started....It was a dark and stormy night...  lol
Stanley - ...run. Kate, the CLOSEST I've come to thinking like that is perhaps [after retirement?] a website. I download OODLES of stuff, & I could put a database there.
Kate - Hey, I have a website for this Council I am president of!
Kate - Website is cool....book much more money making!
Stanley - OMG, I think we had to write to PRECISELY that prompt in one of my methods classes! Seriously, I'm **EXTREMEMLY** selfish, & what I **LIVE** for is drawing attention to **OTHERS'** great stuff. And, @ 53, I'm living for ol' "MR.H!"
Kate - I created the webpage just last week! It is awesome, for me at least! My teachers love it! It's always nice to have them on your side, LOL
Stanley - Say, what's your URL?
Kate - it's very long....let me find it....
Kate - http://www.geocities.com/cecduquesne/C.E.C.html
Stanley - I don't think there's a Chinaman's chance of making money with a book. Anyway, I feel my "gift," if I've one, is to draw attention to... 'Tis a GREAT teaching technique, BTW!
Stanley - Thank, Kate!  I copied it & will visit. Do you have a guestbook?
Kate - AWESOME....now that's a great idea....your richness will come in many other forms other than money...those ways will last you far longer than money
Kate - No guest book yet....perhaps soon though!
Stanley - Yeeeeeeees! Are you 26 or 62? {G}
Kate - 26 with the heart of a teacher!
Stanley - Gotta get that guest book!
Kate - Guestbook is on the way...check it out anyway...for now!
Kate - Green and purple look cool together, huh?
Kate - Okay, thanks
Kate - What are you doing?
Stanley - Yes, nice combo. Before I enter a meeting I always check the colors already being used. My only problem: I can't visualize 1/2 the names they have! [Me never had THOSE on crayolas! {G} ]
Kate - LOL
Stanley - "What are you doing?" No entiendo [Span: I don't understand.]
Kate - Okay I want to you tell me what you honestly think about something! Will you ...be honest?
Stanley - Go for it...
Kate - I just meant, where are you? Your back it's okay now
Kate - Allright...
Kate - About this teaching job...
Stanley - I freeze the screen while posting. Otherwise all the "hopping" drives me nuts.
Kate - I am very concerned that I'm going to go for a teaching interview and they are going to laugh me out of the room because...
Stanley - Yes, the teaching job...
Kate - All the other fresh college grads will be 22 and ...
Stanley - Yes????
Kate - I will be 26 going on 27....what if they ask me why it took me 8 years to graduate....when
Kate - I really did only go four years for this degree...
Stanley - Hmmm... I THOUGHT you were going there. LOOK, I "hang" mostly with subs > 35, if not 40 or 45. Most of my peers lump the 20s crowd together. Now, since the interviewers are likely to be of our genre...
Kate - I don't want some little 22 year old to get the job just because she is 22...I feel way more prepared now then I did at 22...I have had a real life and now I know this is fir me!
Stanley - Well, why DID it take you the 8 yrs? I doubt they'd care, but what are you thinking"
Stanley - that's, thinking?
Kate - Ok here is the Reader's Digest condensed version of the 8 year story...
Kate - Ready?
Stanley - Kate, I'd feel much, MUCH better with a 27 than a 22! Personally, I think late 20s/early 30s are IDEAL for most of us. Seriously... I'm NOT a "smoke-blower!"
Kate - I graduated H.S. in 1994...I went to a private college...all girls...I made a lot of friends which is something I didn't have due to the fact that I was held back in second grade and well my sel esteem was shot and I didn't talk to anyone....anyway...
Stanley - Ready... but you couldn't POSSIBLY shock me! When San Diego had a T's strike in '96, there was actually a story that San Diego City Schools hired a stripper to look after kids!
Kate - I loved having friends and we drank a lot...which I knew was screwing up my future, but at that niave point I did it anyway...and
Stanley - Kate, my best friend is 41, sounds MUCH like you. Lisa would make THE **BEST** T, but I doubt she'll ever do it.
Kate - anyway...I basically got kicked out and went to a community college to turn my grades around...this took a few years to fix...I did very welll and transferred to the school I am at now...I have a 3.9 average..The end
Stanley - so... rehab? And, if so, do they have to know that?
Kate - No not rehab....real life kicked in...I woke up and the friend I thought I had were gone or pregnant...I had to sink or swim I swam thankfully...
Stanley - Hey, in '65 I started college, dropped my 1st sem, took 2 classes my 2nd (an A & an F), then qualified for the 'Nam draft. So? Should they ask, I'd say, "I just wasn't ready."
Kate - They don't need to know, but what do I say...I took a 4 year break? They will see the transferred credits on my record.
Stanley - You know, any Educrat with his/her head screwed on would give you the ADVANTAGE! You're not "ashamed" of those wasted years, are you?
Kate - Stanley...you are cool...sometimes I think everyone in life is perfect, but mine...I'm not ashamed...I learned a lot about life and particularly myself!!
Stanley - Wouldn't, "I wasn't ready" be sufficient?
Stanley - Kate, **PRECISELY**! Look, what you experience doesn't even **BEGIN** to compare to what your Ss' parents have been & ARE going thru!!!!
Kate - Okay, pictue this...22 year old 4.0 Cynthia comes into the interview with all the right answers...Here comes 27 year ols Kate with a 3.9...she also knows a great deal, but took 7 years to get it together...who get the job?
Kate - Did you go to Vietmam? Wow...where does your inspiration end?
Stanley - Kate, In all honesty, I'd lay odds YOU'RE more qualified. So THEY don't but it... Who's mistake is that, anyway? Would you really want to work for such fools anyway???
Kate - I suppose not...Thanks...I just worry about stuff sometimes...it's ONLY my future!!! Thank you for your vote of confidence in me!
Kate - Is it 8:00P.M. there?
Stanley - 'Nam, yes: 2x aboard ship, my last yr on land. However, as a Dental Technician I NEVER had a shot fired where I was. I grew up TREMENDOUSLY in those 4yrs3mos. So, how does that differ from what YOU did???
Stanley - be back in a jif, Kate.
Kate - Okay Stanley
Stanley - Mission accomplished.
Kate - Stan...are you there?
Stanley - Kate, it MAY not show as logging out. It didn't with me...
Kate - Okay...back to the point...which is...what is the point Stanley?
Stanley - Kate, I've so many holes in MY "résumé" that there's probably a galaxy or 2 stashed there somewhere!
Kate - Well, okay.....I'll take your word for it...thanks...I just get flustered because I know I can be the best now and I want to be given a chance...someday you are going to see me being prsented with an award at the National teacher awards!!!
Stanley - Point... how are MY 4 yrs different from yours? Plus... & but few know this, I never ACTUALLY completed my 2nd S/T assignment. I became clinically depressed, & only an "angel" of a block leader pushed my credential thru.
Stanley - Kate, communicate that "...I know I can be the best" attitude & you'll be home free!
Kate - Once again, inspiring....I know that everyone learns and grows...I guess we all are humans...I guess we all have angels that helps us through...thank God!!
Kate - WHAT! How do you know she was meeting someone?
Stanley - Yes... Gail is quite a lady. But, in her defense, I had potential, & I think she saw it. The COURAGEOUS part was acting upon it. Many in Ed don't...
Kate - True!!
Stanley - So, IF you get passed over... so what? Only boors would LAUGH! Moreover, in YOUR case they'd be IDIOTIC boors...
Kate - Stan...It's 11:38P.M. here...I hate to run, but I have class in the morning...visit my site...send me an email and I'll keep in touch. Thanks for you thoughts...you would make a great dad! Yeah...idiotic boors...I like that...thanks!
Stanley - ...You know, the kind that felt out of the Stupid Tree & hit ALL the branches on the way down!
Stanley - So, what's your E-mail addy?
Kate - Send it to the one one the bottom of the site...I'll get it, K?
Stanley - If I CAN'T access it via your site, send to me privately now.
Kate - It works trust me...I have your if it doesn't, alright!
Stanley - Got it -- will do, if not tonight, over the weekend.
Kate - Gotta go...I have a big day tommorrow...Mild disabilities, it's a long class....Thanks...
Kate - Talk to you soon....
Stanley - If for some reason you don't hear from me, I can be reached via most any of my posts on the SubBoard. Also, I should be here Mon @ 9 PM ET for the Sub Chat.
Kate - Okay...I'll be in touch...one last smile, thanks :_)
Kate - Ta Ta
Stanley - Get a good rest! Knock 'em dead mañana -- & in the future!
Stanley - Going, going...
