TheO - Are you a new teacher or a student teacher?
anna - actually i am an old teacher...smile
kris - I will be doing my student teaching soon. I just wanted to listen in and maybe learn something..
TheO - Old is a state of mind- I go from 12 to 82 depending on the day
anna - ohh ok..then you could say a "seasoned" teacher...
anna - always lots of new things to learn
TheO - Ah I see- any tips?
anna - keep your eyes open, your chin up..and stand up for your philosophy
TheO - Hmmm
TheO - What grade etc.. do you teach?
JoAnn - I'm starting the credential program, just wanted to check in here.
kris - I have a question...when student teaching do you make the lesson plans or do you follow the teachers, both, how much of one or the other???
TheO - Me too JoAnn what state?
JoAnn - CA
TheO - Kris I never student taught-sorry
TheO - Me too-So CA
anna - in my experience, I had to observe for a while when doing my internship..then i helped with a few of her lessons..till at the end I had to plan, with her help..then carry out the teaching for my final few days
TheO - Anna how did you come upon your philosophy?
kris - what grade do you teach Anna??
anna - lots and lots of time at the school of hard knocks...have any of you attended that one yet??

TheO - Yes
TheO - very odd
anna - rural or urban? inner city??
kris - what kinds of questions did they ask
TheO - it was by comittee and one of the teachers was an old grad school/drinking pal of mine
TheO - asked about classroom management, discipline, probs with other teachers
TheO - many q's
kris - can you think of any specific question that sticks out??
TheO - urban almost inner city
TheO - let me think on that
TheO - asked how I would handle certain situations with different types of probablmatic students
kris - What did you answer?
anna - well i need to get busy,...hey good luck to all of you...bye!!!
kris - Bye Anna!!
TheO - The senario put to me was about a student who constantly yelled out answers so none of the other children could answer
TheO - told them I thought one would want to take the time to have a talk with that student about it and then listed things to talk about
kris - I have to do this for a class..I'm hoping to really get something out of it though..
kris - Are you a new teacher Sarah?
Sarah - what do you have to do for a class?
kris - Sign up to some online chats
Sarah - I am a student teacher/ Post Bac & Masters. I had another career
Sarah - What is the purpose of your assignment?
Jenny - I am student teaching at the moment as well
Jenny - I absolutely love it!
kris - I was a computer programmer for 3 years after college...I went back to get my certificate
Jenny - The only thing is, my teacher has a problem letting me take over the class entirely
kris - How do you handle that Jenny?
Sarah - Ha! I know some teachers who are trying to get out to do computer work, thinking they'll get rich!
Jenny - I hint around that I would like to be teaching more
kris - Well they might if they really really like it
Sarah - Jenny are you required to take over the class entirely for you class?
kris - I will be student teaching soon..I'm still in school at the moment. I sub alot on my days off from class
Stefernie - <----is a student teacher!
kris - Hi Stefernie
Stefernie - i love student teaching
Stefernie - <---is in special education
Sarah - I student teach full time the whole year
Stefernie - can you guys help me with something?
kris - what type of class are you in?
kris - sure
Stefernie - i'm in a K-5 Resource Room
Stefernie - what are formative and summative evaluation?
kris - I'm not sure what those terms are exactly
Grace - Stefernie, your question stopped everyong cold. LOL
kris - I've subbed in many special ed rooms
Stefernie - i totally forget from classes man
kris - Do you deal with ei kids?
Stefernie - EI?
Stefernie - emotionally impaired?
kris - emotionally imparied
Gisela - Hi. Are any High School teachers in this chatroom?
Stefernie - oh ok, we call them behavior and emotionally disabled here in NC
Stefernie - i have one i work with, 2nd grade girl
kris - Sorry, here in MI that's what we call them
Stefernie - sweet girl, and when her mood is good, she does great
ladydi - hello Can someone help with a lesson plan for 4th graders
Stefernie - my university supervisor did a surprise observation today, oh my
kris - Why do you need to know those terms you were asking about?
Stefernie - sure ladydi, what'cha doing?
Grace - ladydi, what do you want to teach them?
ladydi - I'm being observed on Valentine's Day
Stefernie - its on my new short lesson plan format i'm using
ladydi - I need a LA lesson plan
Stefernie - language arts?
Stefernie - grace is right, what do you want to teach?
ladydi - yes
ladydi - something with Adjectives / verbs / nouns
Gisela - I have my next observation next week. Can anybody tell me how long an activity should last ideally. Also what do you do if it takes the kids longer. I have som students in my classroom who tend to drag things out.
Grace - ladydi, how about using the word Valentine and have your students come up with all the words they can make from it. You could pair them up for this activity.
ladydi - My supervisor from school is coming to visit . I'm a student teacher
Stefernie - let them make up some sentences and play with them
Sarah - What other topics are you covering in class?
Stefernie - how long a period do you have gisela?
ladydi - I'm just about open to anything. My supervisor wants to see some type of reading activity
Stefernie - let them make up sentences on the chalk or a white board and play with them, let them find the adjectives/adverbs/nouns
Sarah - Gisela, I always have extra activities that students can work on when they finish. It usually works as an incentive.
Gisela - 85 minutes, but the students have to read 15 minutes
Stefernie - what kind of reading levels do they have?
Grace - Oops, I posted before your answer. For adjectives and adverbs, have them start to create a sentence. Underline the nouns and put a wavy line under the verbs to denote motion. Then have them give words to describe the nouns. Put a line under these words and a dome over them. Words to describe action would have a wavy line beneath them and a dome over them. It really gives them a visual reference.
Sarah - ladydi-Do you do literature circles?
kris - Well I'm out of here...thanks everyone!!
ladydi - I need something with motivation, learning standards, an activity , use of technology . The whole nine yards
Stefernie - i know some of mine call rat rate sometimes
Stefernie - sarah, are you a student teacher
ladydi - I am
Stefernie - my supervisor thought my emergency lesson plan was boring
ladydi - They are soooo picky
Sarah - Yes
Grace - Stef, not all good lessons are exciting. Sometimes you just have to get a job done.
ladydi - What are literature circles
Sarah - Lit circles are when the students are working on reading together a book. Like a book club.
Gisela - yes, i am still wondering how long my activity should take, ideally
Sarah - It is usually an ongoing activity. They agree to read to a certain point then they discuss.
Fate - Has anyone heard of a Chapter One reading prog.
Sarah - Isn't that a remedial reading program funded by the Federal Government
Gisela - yes, Sarah, i believe you are right.
Sarah - People are logging off after asking questions. I don't understand.
