Diane - I'm a student teacher from Wisconsin
Diane - Where are you from Lora?
lora - how is your student teaching experience going?
lora - Indiana
Diane - For me, mine is great. I'm interning in a 4th grade rm
Diane - How about yours?
lora - I start next fall. I was hoping to learn what to expect from here.
Diane - WHat grade will you be in Lora.
lora - I do not have my placement yet.
Diane - Tweet, are you studentteaching?
CW - hello eveyone
Diane - I can answer questions about my expereince, if you have any.
CW - I am a surpervising teacher and was wondering how I could help my student teachers better...
Diane - Has anyone had any classroom management classes in undergrad?
Diane - CW, I have questions about getting kids to listen better to instructions.
lora - I have not had classes, but I have attended seminars and my instructors have covered some in their classes.
Diane - I only had it covered a few times in methods classes, Lora.
Diane - I have never been on this site before...do we have someone moderating or is it like an open forum?
lora - We had our state teacher of the year at our campus today. One point that she made was that being firm and consistent was very important.
CW - Diane, that's a GOOD QUESTION. wHATEVER YOU DECIDE TO DO, BE consistent
Diane - CW, I've been using what my supervising teacher uses and it works well when she's there, but on the days when she's gone, the kids seem to be testing me.
lora - This is my first time on this site also -- I was actually looking for a teacher's supply store when I found this now.
Diane - Lora, what university are you at?
lora - indiana university
CW - loraDiane, that is bound to happen, I tell my s.t. don't back down, go in firm and stay that way. Children will teat you but remeber you know that they are so you can prepare yourself...
CW - sorry, i am not a typist, i meant test you...
Diane - That's ok
Diane - CW< so you have a student this semester?
lora - I am really afraid that I am going to get a mean supervising teacher.
Diane - HI Stan.
CW - yes, she is super
CW - Lora do you mean "mean" or one with high expectations?
Diane - With the internship Lora, I had the opportunity to apply and I could have said no to the one.
Stanley - Hello, Diane!I'm a Sub in yr #6. How about the rest of you?
Diane - I'm in 4th as an intern and alone at least one day a week.
Stanley - Diane, what type of intership program are you in?
Diane - It's for elementary ed at UW-Whitewater...they pay me
Stanley - You say alone... you mean the rest of the time there's a credentialed T with you?
lora - I have been told that some of the teachers think that all student teachers are not very good. I am not afraid of high expectations -- I know that I will be harder on myself than the teacher will be.
Cyn - What animals start with the letter "x"?
Diane - It's for a whole semester Stanley and I seem to get more responsibility
Stanley - Cyn, not MUCH starts with "x!"
Cyn - Can anyone think of an animal that starts with the letter "x"?
Cyn - But, can you think of any?
Stanley - Diane, do you already have a bachelors in something?
Diane - Lora, I have friends that are not a good fit with their teacher, you just make the best of it...
Diane - No Stan, I grad. this May
Cyn - "n"?
Diane - How about you, Stanley, do you have a bachelors?
Diane - Hi Angel, Hi Cyn
CW - i can't imagine a teacher being a host when they have no respect for the student, that's crazy. The university should be in the schools more so that they can get a feel for the school climate
Stanley - So, then you'll have a bachelors in Ed & be certificated to teach in WI? Or, is that WA?
Diane - I'd second that CW
Cyn - "u, v, w, x, "? Any animals that start with these letters?
Diane - I'll be certified to teach K-12 with ESL, Spanish 1-9, and elem ed 1-8 with a BSE
Diane - In Wisconsin!!!
lora - Cyn: xerus -an African ground-squirrel with a long tail and coarse hair - Funk & Wagnalls College Standard Dictionary
Stanley - I've my credential, but it's not getting much of anywhere -- at least in San Diego. Los Angeles is in the "works," however...
Angel - Anyone getting certified in Special ed?
Diane - How long have you been subbing?
Stanley - Diane, Tu hablas español?
Diane - Si y tu tambien?
CW - i'd like to think that even if you are placed with a teacher that doesn't come off as a friend right away or ever, you can make a list of things that you want to emulate, a list of things that you'd never to in your room, and then a list of things that you'd like to ask about to later sort out
Cyn - Are there any animals that start with the letters "N, u, and v"?
Cyn - Thanks lora!
Stanley - I'm in my 6th yr, averaging upwards of 210 days/yr. [In Y2K I worked 237...]
Brenda - I began my masters in sp. ed. , but am certified K-8. First year teaching fifth grade
Angel - Brenda, did you changed your mind about special ed?
lora - CW - that's what I want to do.
Cyn - n, u, v...animals that start with these letters anyone? I'm in d 6 grade
Diane - Stanley, did you work with computers, Y2K??? or were there problems in the schools?
Brenda - I'm thinking about changing to a subject area science or math
Stanley - Si, mas o menos! Look, if you want a job in CA [maybe even beautiful San Diego...] you can probably have it for the asking! They **LOVE** out of state people like yourself because they are less expensive for them to hire!
Diane - Cyn, is Viper okay (snale?)
lora - CW - I am just afraid that if the teacher doesn't like me, then I will have a really hard time finding a teaching position when I am finished. So far, all of my classroom experiences have been great. All of the teachers have liked my work and have been very encouraging to me.
Angel - I am located in TX and I am going to go through an Alternative Certification Program. My training begins this summer.
CW - Lora. i think you are on the right track. remember it's not a forever deal, part of s.t. is adjusting to staff and being part of a team, even when you disagree with the lead teacher or even administrator, we terachers have got to be flexible
Diane - Mi esposo y hijos no les gusta este idea!
Diane - I have a brother in law in Rancho Del Mar, north of SD?
Angel - Hi Jenn
Cyn - Any animals that start with d letter "n"?
CW - Lora, if you have had such great experiences, they will probably continue, can you ask to do your s.t. with one of your other placements that went so well?
Brenda - I started in sp. ed., got a sp. ed. tutoring position and now feel I'm going in differened direction. I do teach have an inclusive classroom for half of the day.
Stanley - Diane, entiendo, pero han visto a las playas, "Sea World," y el zológico?
Jenn - Is anyone else student teaching?
Diane - For spec. ed people, are you going to have any state budget cuts in the upcoming year that will affect you?
lora - I could list only which corporations that I wanted, but I could not choose which teacher. The school corporation that I am most familiar with I cannot use because I have two daughters in the corporation, so it is against my university's policy. I am a returning adult student, so my children are in school.
Angel - If I would have been qualified, my primary choice would have been to teach Math.
Diane - Si Stanley, have you lived in Californis toda tu vida?
Cyn - Any animals that start with d letter "n"?
Cyn - Ulgunos animales que empieza con la letra "n"?
Brenda - I teach all subjects. I'm the only self-contained classroom out of the four in our building.
Diane - What about night owl, Cyn?
Stanley - Diane, all but for being overseas during a [Vietnam era] hitch in the Navy. Have you always lived in WI?
CW - oh, i see. well anyways you'll be fine, i got my degree when i was 27 and had two children, we make great teachers!
Brenda - Anyone else a first year teacher?
Diane - No, grew up in Illinois, moved to WI about 20 yrs ago
Cyn - Thanks you Miss. Diane and Miss. Lora! Good Night!
Stanley - Cyn, would "ñdu" qualify?
lora - I feel more qualified since I have the experience of being a mom. Plus, I feel that I can better relate to the parents than I could have when I was 20.
Diane - Brenda, what do you do the other half of the day?
lora - Good Night Cyn
Diane - Lora, I can relate!!
Stanley - lora, I feel being "older" DEFINITELY helps in dealing with parents!
Brenda - The sp. ed. kids go to the resource room and I have the rest of the class.
Cyn - Thank you Miss. or Mr. Stanley! I hope it is going to work!
Diane - Yes, and having kids gives one special insight.
Cyn - How did u put the letter "n" in spanish?
Stanley - Diane, were you a Spanish major? Also, would you be willing to teach in a bilingual classroom in CA?
lora - Stanley, thanks. I feel like I am too old to be going to college, but I think that for teaching, my age will be an asset.
Diane - How old about, Lora?
Jen - I am half done with student teaching
lora - 35
Brenda - I graduated for college at 39 after three kids.
Stanley - Cyn, are you on a Mac? [I can only explain it for that platform...]
Mae - Hi! I thought that I would come in and see if I could help anyone.
Diane - I am a spanish and ESL minor but will teach here in SE Wisconsin
Diane - You spring chickens have nothing to fear! I'll be 43 when I graduate!
Cyn - No. But, it's O.K. Good night and thanks for the tips! Tackleprincess@aol.com
lora - I am glad that I am not the only one.
Stanley - lora, I agree it is an asset -- in the CLASSROOM. However, for getting hired... well, that's largely another matter...
Mae - hi jen, hi diane
Diane - Stanley, you can't be much older than me?!
Brenda - I'm 42 and teaching my first year in a full-time teaching position. Don't think my age affected my getting a teaching position.
Jen - hi Diane
Diane - Mae, are you a teacher?
Stanley - I'm approaching 55... still looking for a "permanent" contract...
lora - Brenda, what grade?
Mae - Yes Diane - 4th grade
Jen - Brenda, how is your first year going?
Diane - Oooh, I'm interning 4th grade!
Brenda - Fifth, I love it!!
Mae - Great! How do you like it?
Diane - I'm having a blast, but the kids are getting a little testy when the cooperating teacher isn't there.
Jen - I am interning in 3rd
Mae - They are just testing you - hold your ground
Stanley - Mae, I'm dealing with a VERY taxing group of G-4s currently. [But, they're that way for their contracted classroom T also...]
Brenda - Mae, how long have you taught 4th?
Jen - Daine, I am in the same position
Mae - 7 years - I've got a tough group this year. The key is routines, procedures and consistency.
Diane - Ok, Mae. Will this last all semester?
Mae - You must remind them every day, all day, forever...
Diane - Je, did you have alot of classrm mgmt in undergrad?
Mae - Get Harry Wong's book - The First Day of School - it's great!
Diane - Mae, sometimes I feel like I'm talking to my own kids in the classroom.
Brenda - Yes, procedure, procedure, procedure... is my motto
lora - Everyone: do you have any problems getting the students to do their homework?
Mae - Diane - what do you mean?
Diane - I have that book. I have alot of good techniques.
Jen - the class tests me when my cooperating teacher isn't there too
Brenda - Harry Wong's book sits on my desk everyday. It has made my first year very successful.
Stanley - Mae, I hear you about consistency. However, perhaps 1/3 of these kids are in homeless shelters, so "consistency" is about MORE than "just" the classroom for many of this group...
Mae - lora - hw is a funny issue. Try not to do overkill. Keep it simple.
Diane - I have 2 sons age 11 & 12, and sometimes feel like I'm nagging in the classrm. The kids in the class are not bad, only chatty.
Mae - Stanley - READ out loud with expression - teach social skills - use affirmations
Diane - I use alot of constructivist lessons and I like when the kids chat while learning...it's the transistions!
Mae - Diane - me too - it goes w/o saying
Mae - Good Diane
Jen - hi charmer
Diane - How much noise is ok? Other teachers in neighboring rooms are more conservative and give me 'The Look.'
Stanley - Today we had 2 with knives! ;-( [They didn't pull them, & I don't think they WOULD have, though, of course, that wasn't the point...]
Brenda - My students are very well behaved and respectful but also very chatty. I tease them that they like each other too much. I give them many oppurtunities to work together and expect quiet when appropriate.
Mae - You don't want it to get so loud that they disturb other classes. I use a volume meter. Teach them to whisper.
Mae - Geesh Stanley! If you survive that, you'll be able to handle anything!
Diane - The days when I use more independent activities, the noise level is much lower, but the partner and group activities brings on other chatter as well as learning
Diane - Mae, what is a volume meter?
Brenda - Sometime the other chatter is okay if work is getting done.
Mae - Diane - you just have to keep reminding them. Do you have a lower your voice signal?
Jen - Mae does the volume meter work?
lora - I have heard of some teachers who use a timer when it gets too loud. The students must stay quiet for 3 minutes and then when the timer goes off, they can talk quieting in whispering voices again. It helps to focus them.
Mae - VM - 0 means no talking, 1 means whisper, 2 means indoor voices, 3 is talk loud enough for everyone to hear you. It's a psychological thing.
Stanley - Mae, even their classroom T was surprised @ the knife thing! [On the SubBoard I posted about the outdoor program they're in this wk.]
Diane - I have a signal for lower voice, but the set up of the room means backs are to me at times, especially small group activities.
Mae - Stanley - you are not the first teacher to see knifes...sad
Brenda - My student know to use their 6 inch voices and if they get too loud I take a minute from the board (earned free time) and they quiet each other very quickly. I don't have to say a word.
Mae - Diane - use a rythm clap
Diane - I have a raised hand signal for silence, and 'spotters' who will imitate the signal. We use a rhythm clap too
lora - Mae: what is a rythm clap?
Mae - Draw a meter on the board - if you color it to the top- the activity is over
Diane - Dut, du du du du, dut-dut.
Mae - clap clap, clap clap clap
Brenda - We use a rhythm clap in the lunch room where the volume can tend to get very loud.
Stanley - Mae, since we were short 2 Subs today, the Ss went to the program while I stayed @ school. However, a trusted colleague told me 1 of the knives was a switchblade!
Diane - Mae, The meter is a visual with chalk?
Mae - also say - if you can here my voice raise your hand
Mae - Stanley - what did admin. do?
Mae - Diane - yes w/chalk
Diane - Great idea!
Mae - Diane - I just start walking to the board and bingo!
Diane - Hi TJ
Stanley - Mae, a uniformed officer was called in. Apparently HE suggested 1 day of @ home suspension. [The VP mentioned something about a "technicality."]
TJ - Hey Diane...Hi Everyone
Mae - Another idea - a Pampered Chef timer - times up and down - great for lots of things -especially timing down recess - I have two!
Mae - Stanley - good - it should be a police matter
Diane - Yes...I walk over to the 'On task' cards (another tool !!) and they often hush each other ...'Shhhhh! the cards!"
Mae - hi tj
Brenda - You can also say when you hear my voice clap once....twice.....three times. My chemistry prof. does this for us graduate students.. It's pretty funny.
TJ - hey Mae
Mae - classroom management is a continuous process
Diane - Ooops, that should be 'off task' cards
Mae - Brenda - I hate it when adults do it to adults - lol
lora - Diane: how do the "off task" cards work?
Diane - I think it's my biggest classroom surprise...Teaching 70%, managment 30%
Mae - fyi - if I log off quickly it's because my kids are giving my husband a hard time - lol
Brenda - I think it's pretty funny since this class does tend to talk a lot. Teachers.
Mae - Diane - don't feel bad - this year I feel like my classroom management has been at 90%!
Stanley - Mae, your kids don't pack knives, do they?
Mae - Brenda - we talk a lot at faculty meetings too!
Diane - Off task cards are small card stock with laminate that are given when a student is obviously not doing what they should be doing. They go on the desk of the perpetrator. If it's still on the desk at recess, they owe me 5 minutes.
Mae - Not the ones I have now, but I have had them in the past. Had a kid packing cocaine once...
lora - Diane: Great idea
Brenda - Forth grade???
Mae - Diane - I have laminated strips of paper that say "Stop what you are doing now" I've had them for years and never remember to use them!
Diane - Yes, Lora...it works wonders, but I feel like a drill sargeant!
Mae - Brenda - 4th - 5th - 1st...It's a tough world out there
Diane - Mae, Lora, on the back I have three quick reminders of how to get back on task.
Mae - Diane - that's a good idea - why don't you post them on the classrm. mgmt. board
Diane - I didn't know there was such a board!
Mae - Oh you guys - check out the chatboards on teachers.net!
Diane - I could have used that board today!
Diane - This is my first time on the chats here
Stanley - Diane, there are a ZILLION boards here @ T.Net!!
Mae - I love the Primary, Upper Elem, Pro Rdng, and Classroom Mgmt board - you just post your question and wait for the answers!
Diane - I'm starting to get the picture!, you guys are great!
Mae - I rarely come to the chatroom - only joined in to help out. I stick to the boards.- they are the best
Diane - Mae, how long did you say you had been teaching?
Mae - Diane - just wait till you meet Jan, and Ginny and Grace and countless others who REALLY KNOW THEIR STUFF!
Stanley - I "hang" on the SubBoard, though I **NEED** to start payin' more attention elsewhere! :-$
Mae - 7 YEARS
Mae - Stanley - try the Upper Elem. board.
Diane - Will you make it a long term career or do you forsee burnout? What state?
Mae - Texas - I forsee writing and conducting workshops/seminars - I love that stuff - I will always stay in touch w/the classroom. Right now I 'm trying to go down to 2nd.
Stanley - Mae, I'm targeting G-3 for a contract in '02/'03. What board do you think THAT would be? It's really kind of a "swing" grade, isn't it?
Diane - Is there a job board too?
Mae - Primary and Upper boards - grade 3 teachers post on both boards
Mae - Stanley -you will have kids on all levels w/in a grade level - keep that in mind
Mae - Diane - yes there is a job board
Diane - Mae, my cooperating teacher is thinking about going down to first or teaching reading methods at the college level! Do you feel there is a great need for teachers to vary their positions?
Stanley - Here in CA G-3 is the last grade with class size reduction: I.e., 20:1 ratios.
Mae - I want experience in primary and upper. The best thing about teaching (for me) is being able to change. I get bored easily.
Diane - Me too
Mae - Stanley - Michael on the Primary board is a good resource - he has a website - lots of cool ideas - and is from Canada
Diane - Johnny do you student teach?
Johnny - no, i'm first year
Stanley - Mae, I **LOVE** all the changes of Subbing! [Were it not for the pay/lack of benfits...]
Mae - I'll be back in a sec. - gotta check on the kids
Mae - back now
Mae - Stanley - subbing is good experience
Diane - what grade johnny?
Mae - chatrooms require multiple tasking - you know?
Stanley - Mae, **THANKS** for the tip re Michael..I'll watch for his posts...
Johnny - 6, 7, and 8
Mae - Stanley -follow his link to his website
Diane - Yes, I just answered the phone and conferenced about spring break plans!
Diane - What subject for 6, 7, & 8?
Mae - i'm on spring break (the heck w/caps)
Johnny - science
Diane - was it tough getting that first job?
Mae - johnny - you are a brave man!
Stanley - Mae, Los Angeles Unified actually gives longevity credit for subbing! As a result I "should" start there as a Step 7 T!!
Johnny - not too tough
Mae - So does Texas
Johnny - for finding the job, that is
Johnny - very tough for the teaching
Johnny - i'm waiting for my pink slip
Diane - what state? and are you in a rural or urban setting?
Mae - tough age group johnny
Johnny - subruban, illinois
Mae - the first year is always the hardest - just remember - you will never have the same class again!
lora - I have to start laundry. Thanks for all the help everyone -- this has been a great discussion. I hope to "talk" with you again soon
Johnny - mae, actually, i will
Johnny - if i stay there
Diane - IE: Chicago?
Johnny - since i teach 6th, 7th, and 8th
Diane - Bye Lora!
Mae - johnny - it could be innercity
Stanley - Johnny, if you're in science me thinks they'll have to be REALLY perturbed with you to terminate you!
Mae - johnny - you mean you will have the same class again?
Johnny - nah, it's a good school, they can get lots of applicants
Diane - Are you looping?
Johnny - if you want to call it that
Johnny - i'm the only science teacher
Diane - is it that you are the only science teacher?
Mae - oh I get it johnny - you teach science for all three grades - okay they should be mixed up differently - that might help and you will have a year under your belt
Stanley - Johnny, have you had T.Ed courses & student taught? Or, are an intern?
Diane - duh...computer's too slow!
Sue30 - Hello everyone.
Johnny - yes
Johnny - i couldn't teach if i hadn't
Mae - hi sue
Mae - Has anyone here read "Mosaic of Thought"?
Stanley - Johnny, here in CA there are numerous science Ts who are on provisional or emergency credentials.
Diane - No, what is it? Philosophy like?
Johnny - oh
Johnny - i'm fully certified to teach science, math, social studies, and computer science
Mae - It's one of those college books on reading - but it's actually awesome
Johnny - or general K-9 classrooms
Mae - johnny it takes about 3 years to get a grip, and 2 more to get a handle - hang in there
Diane - Johnny, is that for elementary and middle...in Illinois is it k-9, Wisconsin has changed to 1-9
Stanley - Mae, I bought it & have read parts of "Mosaic." It's on the level of a religious treatise in San Diego City Schools!
Johnny - i know
Johnny - i'm giving myself 3 years
Johnny - yes, it's elementary and middle
Brenda - buying it.
Diane - Johnny, don't give up! What are the problems that you're having?
Mae - Stanley - we are meeting here tomorrow night 10:30 Eastern to talk about MOT and Strategies that Work - the best will be here!
Johnny - nothing major
Johnny - i just have worse classroom management than other teachers
Johnny - and therefore kids are always chatting or disrespectful
Mae - Johnny - read Harry Wongs "The First Day of School"
Johnny - i have
Diane - We covered alot of mgmnt ground and the chatting earlier. Everyone says be firm...be consistent. I'm having the same chatting problems in 4th grade
Mae - Consistency is the key
Stanley - Johnny, if you even "THINK" they're considering terminating you, PLEASE try to patch things up... [The educational "old boy" network considers such things a **REAL** liability!]
Johnny - i don't think it will be as bad next year
Johnny - i've learned a lot
Mae - disrespectful is in their hormones
Diane - So is chatting!
Johnny - wow
Johnny - that's what the superintendent called me
Mae - johnny - as long as you are trying hard - you will be okay
Johnny - a liability
Mae - he called you a liability?
Stanley - Mae, THANKS for the tip!I MIGHT just make that!!
Johnny - yup
Mae - Stanley - I'll warn you - it will get deep! LOL
Diane - Johnny, is it suburban chicago, rockford, peoria?
Mae - Johnny - just keep working at it - lots of folks have their first year nightmare stories to tell
Johnny - i'd rather not say
Diane - that's okay...I'm originally form there...I thinkI have a pretty good idea.
Brenda - Haven't read the book MOT but I've heard a lot of good things about it. Would it be good for fifth grade level. I do modifying the 4 blocks.
Mae - Brenda - it's for all grades, and yes, I like the 4 blocks too!
Johnny - i'm sending out resumes
Diane - I'm not too far from Milwaukee and have friends student teaching in the inner city....THAT"S TOUGH... no respect for the teacher at all
Mae - johnny - come to Texas
Stanley - Johnny, a friend was, IMO, unfairly terminated last school yr. Even a "hungry" district like L.A. Unified "may" not be able to overlook such a thing for 5 yrs after!
Diane - suburban kids can be another problem of a different sort.
Brenda - Mae, do you use 4 blocks in your class?
Johnny - i'm not certified in texas
Mae - If it comes down to termination - they will usually allow you to resign - looks better and doesn't follow you
Diane - Do the other teachers have issues too? or is it just you, J?
Mae - Brenda - yes and no - I was doing my own version before I ever heard of it - I have all four components . I really adopted the phonics and word wall stuff
Johnny - just me
Diane - I use 4 blocks in my room.
Brenda - Diane, what grade?
Diane - J, it sounds like a small school.
Mae - Johnny - when you need help w/an issue - go the classroom mgmt board and the middle school board
Stanley - I've a friend who's a retired pro football defensive back. While subbing im Milwaukee a kid took swings @ him. I guess it got ugly... However, though commended for what he did, my friend left teaching as a result!
Diane - Brenda, 4th grade
Johnny - ok
Mae - Stanley -stuff happens
Brenda - What kind of issues?
Johnny - on the bright side, my kids seem to be learning
Mae - any issues
Diane - J, is it just a handful of kids or all of them. Could you take away time from their lunch?
Mae - that is the most important thing
Johnny - Diane, it's just a handful of kids
Diane - You do alot of hands-on teaching, right?
Mae - johnny - seperate them
Johnny - ya
Stanley - Mae, I'm going to disagree with you about a resignation "not following you." The apps I've seen in SoCA usually have phrasings that would seem to COVER the resignation contingency.
Johnny - not as much as i'd like though...cuz we don't have the supplies needed for science
Mae - I guess it depends on where you live
Johnny - mae - trust me, they are separated
Diane - In my 4th grade rm, it's the same.I've separated the worst offenders
Diane - The worst time for me though is transitions.
Mae - johnny - what are they doing exactly?
Johnny - just talking and not paying attention
Mae - transitions are always the hardest - some kids can't handle it
Diane - Have you tried not talking until you get the respect you deserve, total silence for at least 5 seconds?
Mae - Okay - eyes on me - don't budge or speak until everyone is listening
Johnny - yup
Diane - That is...after you get there attention
Johnny - they'd go the entire 90 minutes
Mae - keep doing it -
Mae - do they walk in talking?
Diane - How about a flash lights on/off
Johnny - maybe next year
Mae - diane - lights don't work
Johnny - mae: yes, they walk in talking, i've been trying to curb that all year
Diane - You don't have to wait til next year. You could go in and tell them things are going to change immediately. From now on... and then be firm
Stanley - Johnny, have you ever considered a classroom money system? There's a book out there called "Big Buck$" which I have...
Mae - johnny - it's impt. that they walk in quiet. If they walk in talking - send them out and tell them to walk out an come in quietly. do it until they get it. diane is right - start now and be firm
Johnny - it's on the consideration list for next year
Mae - do it this year - don't wait
Diane - Are you familiar with TRIBES?
Johnny - classroom money system this year?
Johnny - no way, i just implemented new stuff
Johnny - have to try it out first
Mae - no - starting over and getting firm - you could try some incentive - a group incentive is best w/older kids - peer pressure
Johnny - i'm very firm now
Diane - I don't know if you were here before when I talked about off-task cards
Johnny - Tried that
Diane - I got the idea from a 7th grade teacher
Johnny - anyway, i gotta go
Johnny - it's late
Stanley - Johnny, you might want to also take a look @ one of the lessons in T.Net's "Lesson Archives." I believe it's entitled "Discipline by Sweathog." [Hey, you know how some people choose "unusual" posting "handles"... ]
Diane - Don't give up!
Johnny - seeaya
Mae - johnny - it takes time to develop the teacher look - plus - you NEVER stop working on classroom mgmt. - kids will always go as far as they can
Johnny - k, i'll look for it
Mae - Sweathog's deal is really cool!
Mae - Each day is new opportunity!
Stanley - Mae, does he still occasionally post on the MainBoard? I no longer remember why he "quit"...
Mae - I've seen him post a couple of times - I think he lurks. Actually I think he is a she!
Mae - Probably lurks or quit do to some of the flaming on the main board - it's best to stick w/the other boards
Stanley - Mae, are you fond of the "Tribes" book? [Another thing I have but have ONLY "really" scanned!]
Diane - I gotta go tuck in my 12 year old ( old routine!) and then need to prep a little for tomorrow.
Mae - I have heard of it, but never looked into it. I am more Love and Logic, and First Day of School these days
Mae - hi mohoganee - I think I'll stick with moh if you don't mind
Diane - Stanley, I use TRIBES and attended a 2 week seminar on it. There's a lot of cross over with Love and Logic too
Mae - Goodnight Diane and good luck!
Stanley - Mae, I recollect Sweathog referring to a "Mrs." [Of course, now days I guess we can conclude NOTHING from THAT, right?]
Diane - They both work great
Mae - I'll have to look into Tribes.
Mohoganee - Hello!
Mae - Oh well...
Diane - Good night all and thanks for your encouragement and support. Come back again, this was a great chat!
Stanley - Hello, Moh! [Note: At LEAST I didn't spell it "Moe!"]
Mae - moh - are you a teacher?
Stanley - Mae, I know Jan Fisher is VERY fond of "Love & Logic." [What I've seen her post of it I've ALSO found of value!]
Michelle7 - Any advice for a new teacher looking for a job right now. I am a title I assitant now, want a full time position
Mae - Yes she is. Jan is great! I chat with her often.
Mae - michelle - just get your name out there - subbing helps to put name and face together
Stanley - Michelle, you teach G-7, or just another "poor" prediction?
Michelle7 - what is G-7?
Mae - grade 7
Michelle7 - Right now I teach reading and math to 3rd and 4th graders...but I want my own classroom..Im a title I teacher (like reading improvement)
Stanley - 7th grade -- my "shorthand," Michelle!
Mae - michelle - have you read Mosaic of Thought
Michelle7 - Well, I can't sub, cuz i have a job right now..I just want to get interviews and know how to do well in them when i get them
Mae - sorry - I didn't connect before I posted.
Stanley - Michelle, do you have a contract & benefits?
Michelle7 - yeah
Mae - Do you know of any openings coming up in your school?
Michelle7 - My district is actually cutting teachers..I know of some openings though...i just am not sure how to stand out from the 100's of others that want the same job
Michelle7 - why do you ask about benefits
Mae - Just get in there and do you best to make a good impression - that's all that you can do really
Mae - what state are you in?
Stanley - Michelle, search the T.Net lessons archives for "interview." A gal by the name of "Lauri" has LOTS of questions posted.
Michelle7 - IL
Mae - Stanley - how do you search the archives? Can you do it for past posts?
Mae - Michelle - are you willing and able to move in state or out? It could open up the doors for you.
Stanley - Michelle, so you're afraid of losing the position you have? Or are you paid less than if you had your "own" classroom?
Mae - michelle left - oh well...so what about those archives?
Stanley - Mae, when the posts "fall off" they're gone -- unless someone has downloaded them & will send them to you. [The things I've referred to tonight were submitted as "lessons."]
Mae - Oh pooh! I am forever asking for someone to repost something that I saw a long time ago! Oh well!
Stanley - Mae, do you have that URL for Michael's site?
Mae - No - I'm afraid not. Post to him on the Primary board. You could probably find one of his posts that links to it.
Stanley - Mae, that's not a bad "strategy!"Someone MIGHT have downloaded it, ya' know! :-*
Mae - I'm gonna log off and check the boards. I want to see if Jan has posted today on the Pro. Reading board. She keeps my mind hoppin'! Good night!
Stanley - Did you say you were in TX?
Mae - Yes
Stanley - Well, good night to ya'![Are you aware Jan is writing a book?]
Mae - Yes - I've already told her that I want mine autographed special!
Mae - goodnight
Stanley - She & I disagreed QUITE strongly about a poster on the SubBoard, & we disagree about other things. However, **NO ONE** cares more passionately about what he or she does!!
Mae - True - and she knows how to apply theory to the classroom. She is really great. Okay - I'm loggin' off!
Stanley - Night!!
