Stanley - Hello, everyone!
Beth - Hi there!
Stanley - Are you a new T, Beth?
Beth - I am a new teacher wanna be
Beth - Are you a new teacher?
Beth - I am about to start an alternative certification program
Stanley - So, you're takeing T.Ed courses, or just thinking about it? [I'm credentialed, though in my 6th yr of subbing...]
Beth - Looking for a job for the fall.
Beth - Why aren't you teaching yet?
Stanley - Alternative cert program?? At what grade level, & WHERE?
Beth - Grades 4-8.......in Texas
Stanley - I'm in San Diego, where there are LOTS of applicants -- most all of whom are less expensive AND younger than I!
Beth - I love San Diego! How old are you? What have you done up until now?
Stanley - G-4 thru 8? I've never seen THAT grouping here...Are you talking about a SPED position?
Beth - Well.......it is an elementary generalist
Beth - I will be able to teach 1-8
Beth - 4-8 is my grouping for school this summer
Beth - How much to subs in San Diego make a day?
Stanley - Beth, I was 49 when I got my credential. Prior I've been in the restaurant business, a Welfare Eligibility Worker, & a Dental Technician in the USN during Viet Nam days. A bit of EVERYTHING there, huh?
Beth - LOL.......kinda sounds like me
Beth - I have been a flight attendant for 10 years
Beth - I am waiting tables right now for extra money.......and subbing
Stanley - San Diego subs earn anywhere from, I believe, $80-120/day, depending upon the district. [There are something like 43 districts in our county.]
Beth - wow. What grade do you want to teach?
Beth - I make 75 dollars a day here in the D/FW area
Stanley - Will your alternative program "guarantee" you a contract upon completion?
Beth - no...but I don't pay for the program if I don't get hired
Beth - They offer a job fair here in a couple of weeks and they usually have a lot of schools calling needing teachers
Stanley - I'm elementary, & I'd PROBABLY settle for anything other than K. G-3 MIGHT be my druthers because it is the OLDEST which still features 20:1 class size ratios!
Beth - I subbed in a kindergarten class yesterday and I about pulled my hair out
Beth - Being the end of the year and all....the kids were WILD!
Beth - :o
Stanley - Interesting about the not paying... They'd not DARE to do that HERE!
Beth - I have to pay for my summer school, though.
Beth - That is just $250.
Stanley - I've no problem SUBBING in K. However, on a CONTRACTED basis the artsy-craftsy nature of the curriculum would be a push for me.
Beth - When I get a job, I pay $3,000. But it is payroll deducted over the course of the school year
Beth -
Beth - I like that part
Beth - I actually would LOVE to teach 5 or 6th grade math or science
Stanley - Is that thru a district or a college/university?
Beth - It is a private program through the region of Texas where I live
Beth - It represents many districts in this area
Beth - http://www.ecapteach.com/
Stanley - G-6, & even some G-5s, can be, uh, "interesting" at this time of yr! [Put together new hormones AND spring...]
Beth - Yikes!
Beth - I'm subbing for 6th grade PE tomorrow and Monday
Beth - Should be fun!
Stanley - OK, so HOW do you enter a "hot link" like that?
Beth - I just copied and pasted it.......
Beth - If it was difficult, I wouldn't have done it.
Beth -
Stanley - I've subbed perhaps 1100 days -- without ever having done PE. [For 13 mos I had to avoid them because I had a patch over me left eye... ;-( ]
Beth - PE is fun.
Stanley - Hmmm... later on I'll have to TRY that way of entering a URL. [Maybe it requires the http tag to start -- something which I NEVER include in my URLs... ]
Beth - Shoot........gotta run! It's been good chatting with you. Do you chat here often? (I've never been here before)
Beth - I hope you get a job soon!
Stanley - Isn't subbing BETTER when you're able to get the jobs at LEAST a day ahead?[I virtually **NEVER** have to get early AM calls...
]
Beth - I agree
Beth - I LOVE knowing ahead of time
Beth -
Stanley - I normally only come for the monthly Sub Chat, & [as often as possible] THIS chat for Beginning/New Ts.
Beth - Do you post on the sub board?
Beth - Maybe I need to check out the sub chat next time
Beth - I'll look for you next time Stanley. Nice chatting with you.....almost time for ER
Stanley - THANKS for your wishes re a contract! Los Angeles has my paper work, though I suspect I'm not serious about moving there until '03/'04. [I've a good 45 yrs here in San Diego, & I can't move THAT quickly, I'm afraid...]
Beth - I wouldn't want to leave San Diego
Beth - TTYL! Have a great night.
Stanley - Beth, take care, & yes, I DO try to post on the SubBoard...
Stanley - Margee, Good Evening!
Clara - is anyone still chatting?
Stanley - Hello, Clara! Are you a beginning or new T?
Clara - yes I am
Clara - I just graduated from college in December
Clara - I was hoping I could find some good advice tonight on finding a job
Stanley - I'm a 6th yr Sub in San Diego, thinkin EVENTUALLY I'll have to move to Los Angeles in order to be contracted...
Clara - wow, I have been a sub for one semester and already it is driving me crazy!
Clara - I don't think I could do it for 6 years!
Stanley - Well, Los Angeles is **DEFINITELY** interested in those who have a credential. What's your specialty?
Clara - Im certified for early childhood, but I'd rather be with intermediate (language arts)
Stanley - I don't mind subbing, though I DO find it wearing. [I.e., I tend to be VERY lethargic on the weekends!]
JennyBC - hello
Stanley - Clara, by intermediate you mean G-4 & 5? Jenny, HELLO!
Clara - I'm sure you do, I have gotten into the habit of only subbing once or twice a week because of that
Clara - Hi Jenny!
JennyBC - hi
Clara - yes, I wouldn't mind any grades between 3rd and 6th
JennyBC - where do you guys live?
Clara - I live in Texas
JennyBC - i've never been anywhere near texas
Stanley - Clara, I average over 200 days/yr, & I've worked as many as 237![More days = more $, ya' know! ;-) ]
JennyBC - are you both subbing?
Clara - yes, I realize that, but I have also been working part time elsewhere, so I don't worry so much about getting more days in subbing
Stanley - I'm in San Diego. You're in British Columbia, Jenny?
Clara - yes, we are...are you a new teacher? do you sub?
JennyBC - yes, small-ish town called vernon
JennyBC - it's my 5th year teaching, and i work part time grade 2, and sub the other days
Clara - that must be nice!
JennyBC - it's good but i've had enough of part time! i'm getting frustrated and want my own class.....it's hard to get hired in my district
Clara - I know the feeling! I am having a hard time finding a full time position here also
JennyBC - are you both trying for full-time?
Stanley - Clara, what's your other vocation? Also, would you consider relocating to Los Angeles? I think they're plainly STARVED for credentials!!
Clara - I'm working part time for Sylvan Learning Center as a tutor, its a great job
JennyBC - i know that american districts come up to canada to recruit teachers and nurses too
Clara - I don't think that I would move out of state...unless I just had no other choice
JennyBC - yeah i would only leave BC if I was desparate
Clara - yes, I've heard that too
JennyBC - and i'm not sure i'd like living in such a huge city
Stanley - The initial Los Angeles interview is a snap. Then, once they've screened your paperwork, they give you a list of schools with openings. The PRINCIPALS then offer the contracts...
JennyBC - it would sure be nice to be able to choose where you wanted to work....here you have to take what you can get
Stanley - Well, they give LONGEVITY credit for subbing, & for them, a yr of subbing is ONLY 130 days. With some post grad units [I've about 80], that means a starting pay of something like 52 K for a step 7 T!!
JennyBC - i know someone who was offered $50,000 to work in an elementary school in the barbados......that's about $80,000 Canadian which is an UNREAL salary
JennyBC - wow
miss jenny - hi everyone
JennyBC - hi miss jenny
Stanley - Hmmmm... & you wouldn't need any Canadian furs in Barbados, would ya'?
miss jenny - hi jenny
miss jenny - lol
JennyBC -
JennyBC -stanely
JennyBC - i live in a nice hot summer climate!
Stanley - Miss Jenny, are you a new T, too?
JennyBC - this could get confusing for me, i might start thinking that you're calling me "miss"
Clara - I think I might move to Barbados to teach LOL
miss jenny - a T?
JennyBC - that would be nice wouldn't it clara?
Stanley - BC, what, in British Columbia? You're "talkin'" to a Southern Californian, ya' know!
JennyBC - new teacher miss jenny?
Clara - I think so...for a year or two anyway
JennyBC - it gets over 100 degrees regularily in the summer, to me that 's pretty warm
miss jenny - where are you from Jenny?
miss jenny - I'm from Texas
JennyBC - it's a semi-desert climate here......rattlesnakes, cactus, coyotes, etc
Clara - Im from Texas too, miss jenny!
JennyBC - i live in british columbia
miss jenny - cool
Clara - sort of like Texas, JennyBC!
miss jenny - where?
Clara - Im in the FtWorth area, and you?
JennyBC - i guess so, it's just diff cause we have all 4 seasons not hot all the time, just for a few months in the summer
Stanley - Barbados would only interest me on a "permanent" basis: At 55 I'm not much interested in making major moves!
JennyBC - nice place to "retire" and teach
Clara - that would be a good retirement place
JennyBC - the only hot place i've been is mexico]
miss jenny - San Antonio
JennyBC - is it cowboy country where you guys live in texas?
Clara - then you have been close to Texas Jenny
miss jenny - huh?
JennyBC - yeah i guess, but it was the pacific coast of mexico, puerto vallarta
Clara - still closer to Texas than you think!
Clara - miss Jenny are you a beginning teacher?
JennyBC - *pulls out a map*
Stanley - Unfortunately, I'm at the point where I **HAVE** to be thinking about how many more yrs I can even TEACH. I'm "hoping" until I'm about 70, but since I know virtually NO one that old who's still contracted...
miss jenny - yeah
miss jenny - I don't even have a degree yet. I'm not a real teacher
miss jenny - I'm only 19
JennyBC - you never know stanely........you might be able to teach as long as you want if there's a teacher shortage
miss jenny - I teach 4 yr olds at a day care
JennyBC - that must be fun jenny
Clara - oh I see, so are you just thinking about becoming a teacher, or are you already studying for it?
miss jenny - it's fun but I like 1st graders
miss jenny - I am majoring in El. Ed. and want to teach 1st grade
JennyBC - 1st grade is challenging to teach, but fun
miss jenny - but the day care doesn't provide me with anything
Clara - I did the same thing missjenny
miss jenny - I wonder if I have to buy everything myself
JennyBC - try volunteering in a 1st grade class
Clara - I started out in childcare and majored in elementary education (early childhood)
JennyBC - you end up buying alot, depending on the district
miss jenny - I taught 1st grade last year
Clara - now that Im certified I prefer older kids
JennyBC - i like gr 2-4
Clara - yes you will buy a lot, but if you get into a good district you won't have to spend too much of your own money
Stanley - BC, I'm talking about being able to do it physically/mentally. E.g., in Jan '01 my left retina SPONTANEOUSLY detached! Since my vision is now less than 20:20 in that eye, I'd probably be FINISHED were the same thing to happen to my RIGHT eye...
miss jenny - I mean at day care
JennyBC - some districts give a teacher $200 to spend for classroom budget...we get $75
JennyBC - oh no!
Clara - in day care usually if you want anything you do have to buy it yourself
Clara - stanley that would not be good, I hope you can hold out as long as you need to!
miss jenny - really?
miss jenny - that stinks
Stanley - Here in San Diego certain low performing schools get about $800/T, though those schools are under *HUGE* pressure to improve test scores!
Clara - thats the way it always was for me...and if I didn't wnat to buy it hten I had to ask my director for it and even if she said she would buy it, I had to wait 2 or 3 weeks to get it
JennyBC - is that $800 for all supplies, like paper and art supplies etc?.......here the class budget if for "extra" stuff for the classroom, not basic supplies
Yayo - Greetings all
Clara - Hi Yayo!
JennyBC - hi yayo
miss jenny - wow
JennyBC - brb
Stanley - Yo, Yayo![I know, me VERY bad...
]
Yayo - It's cool
miss jenny - I can't afford it
miss jenny - I'm trying to earn money for college
Clara - very few teachers in day care can
Clara - how long have you worked in day care?
miss jenny - awww man
miss jenny - only 1 week
Stanley - BC, the $800 is for "EXTRA" stuff, though [TRUST me on this] you do **NOT** want to be involved with a "reform" district!
Clara - what age group are you with?
miss jenny - 4 yr olds
Yayo - what's a reform district
Clara - 4's are fun, and Im sure if you start looking around you can find some supplies that you can make due with
Clara - you will figure out lots of ways to do fun things in a cheap way!
miss jenny - I love the kids but I think I am going to quit this job.
Clara - and you can ask the other teachers there for hints
miss jenny - I need to earn money to pay for school or else I'll never get a degree
Clara - I can give you some website addresses too for early childhood lesson plans
Clara - why do you think you'll quit?
miss jenny - I need money
Clara - day care certainly doesn't pay very much for the long hard hours you put in, but I made it through college ok
Stanley - Yayo, San Diego City Schools is getting NATIONAL attention for trying to change the course of so-called "urban" ed. [It's the nation's 8th largest district.] Most Ts are VERY, **VERY** unhappy campers!!
Yayo - in what way are you guys trying to change it
Clara - Ive found that the franchised centers usually have more money as far as salaries and supplies, so its better all around
Stanley - Miss J, do you have enough education to Sub? And, would you earn more $$ that way?
Stanley - Yayo, there's an emphasis upon literacy to the exclusion of most everything else. THAT many of us don't fault. However, when it is implemented via a storm trooper, lock-step type of mentality...:-P
miss jenny - no
miss jenny - I'm a sophomore in College
Clara - miss jenny, some school districts only require that you have a high school diploma to sub
Yayo - so this is coming down from the district or the board
miss jenny - oh really?
miss jenny - cool
miss jenny - how can I apply to be a sub or something?
miss jenny - can I do it online?
Clara - just call the administration buldings, and ask to talk to who ever is in charge of substitutes, usually someone in personnel
miss jenny - ok thanks
Yayo - could jenny be a teachers aide, do they pay more than the pre-school
Clara - you can look at ISD websites to see if they have applications online
Clara - you might have to look around quite a bit for some districts that don't require college hours, but you can find them!
Stanley - Yayo, actually it appears to be stemming from the Chamber of Commerce's "Business Roundtable," which "controls" 3/5 of the Board's seats. The business groups is...
Clara - and then when you have 30 or so hours, then they usually will pay you more money
miss jenny - I only have 30 hours of college
Clara - then you should be able to find more districts to sub in that way
miss jenny - neat
Clara - in my area most require at least 30 college hours, a few of the bigger districts require 60 hours, and some don't require hours at all
Stanley - ...ANGRY because they get job applicants whom THEY have to train. A LEGITIMATE gripe, me thinks, though children are **NOT** widgets, & THERE their "methods" tend to break down...
miss jenny - whoa
Yayo - what do u teach Stanley
Stanley - Miss J, before our "reform" here in San Diego City Schools, *MANY* Ed majors worked as aides! [I think it was a **WONDERFUL** "training ground" for **ALL** concerned!]
Clara - Its time for me to go, It was nice meeting everyone! Thanks for the chat!
Stanley - Yayo, I'm a 6th yr Sub with an Elementary credential. Though probably not until '03/'04, I anticipate having to move to Los Angeles in order to become contracted!
miss jenny - wow
Stanley - Clara, take care!!
Clara - Thanks, you too!
miss jenny - you guys are great!!
Yayo - I hear they need teachers in LA . You don't want to make the move
Stanley - Miss J, virtuall ALL my T.Ed classmates had been aides. They were ALL far, **FAR** more ready than I when it came to our student teaching assignments. [And student teaching is SO critical for getting a contract upon graduation!!]
miss jenny - it's good?
Stanley - Yayo, I'm virtually CERTAIN I could be offered something to start in EARLY 7/02. However, after 45 years in San Diego, I need more time than that...
miss jenny - well I gotta go
miss jenny - thanks for all your help
miss jenny - bye bye
Stanley - Miss J, I don't understand the "it's good?"
Stanley - Miss J, best of EVERYTHING to ya'!
Yayo - bye jenny
Stanley - Yayo, are you still there?
Yayo - yes
Stanley - Going, going...
Yayo - are u still there
Stanley - Yup... at least for a WHILE more. Did you say where YOU teach?
Yayo - no I didn't LOL
Stanley - Just don't tell me you're a San Diego or L.A. area administrator, OK?
Yayo - LOL
Stanley - So, why the visit to the [after hours] Beginning/New T Chat?
Yayo - I just saw where there was live chat so I decided to check it out
Yayo - This one is for beginning and new teachers
Yayo - They have different times or days for different types of teachers
Stanley - From 9-10 PM [ET] it was for Beginning/New Ts.
Yayo - Is there a schedule some where
Stanley - Yes, different chat topics on different days. Most are on a monthly schedule.
Yayo - where do I find the schedule
Stanley - If this link works... http://www.teachers.net/chat/meetings.html
Yayo - Thanks
Yayo - It works
Stanley - Also, if you're using a browser with "frames," to the left you should see a "button" that says "change rooms." Chatroom #1 is often LOADED with people...
Yayo - I see it
Yayo - Hello teach
Stanley - Yayo, seldom is there a "topic" per se in Room #1. Hi, teach!
Stanley - Yayo, seldom is there a "topic" per se in Room #1. Hi, teach!
Yayo - I teach in a district that is desperately trying to reform too, but it's not working either
Stanley - How is it "not working?" Do you mean no "results," or F R U S T R A T I O N ???
Yayo - Both with exlamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yayo - exclamation LOL
Stanley - Well, San Diego is attempting to be a PIONEER in that area. And you know what they say about pioneers taking arrows, don't you?
Quique - hi stanley...are you folks talking about new teachers or subbing?
Stanley - Hey, fellow San Diegan Quique. ?Cómo estás?
Yayo - no what do they say?
Quique - estoy mas o menos bien...taking it as it goes
Quique - whats new in SDCS?
Yayo - hello quique
Quique - hi yayo...where are you from?
Yayo - california too
Quique - LA area..or Bay area..or ?
Stanley - Quique, BOTH! Yayo, pioneers take the arrows in the glutes... [actually there's another word, but I think it would be blipped!]
Yayo - LA for now moving to the BAY in Aug
Quique - kool!
Quique - well, the job scene is tight around here, as usual
Quique - i better go...laundry is calling...
Stanley - Yayo, you're CURRENTLY working in LAUSD?!?
Yayo - Stanley what exactly is wrong?
Yayo - no LA area?
Quique - good luck, Yayo...
Quique - bye Stan...see you next time
Yayo - Compton
Stanley - Quique, any luck for YOU on the contract front?
Quique - wonderful Compton! lol...Stan..hoping my present temporary position will turn into full time...but it's iffy...budget cuts
Yayo - Every thing I read says California needs teachers but every thing I hear no one can get a contract
Stanley - Arrrrrrgh... that's the one the state took over, right? I'm thinking LAUSD may well try to place me in the Bell/Huntington Park area. Know anything about THAT area?
Quique - i have to run...bye for now...the jobs are in inner cities, i think...challenging places
Yayo - night Quique
Quique - adios!!
Stanley - I've EVERY indication LAUSD is eager -- IF one has a credential [which I do.]
Yayo - my son was teaching in Huntington Park funny that you would mention that
Stanley - Er... "was?!?"
Yayo - he quit. Youngster didn't have the patience, now he's selling products to school districts
Yayo - says he's making more money. He was teaching in an elementary school.
Yayo - A lot of people have gone to LAUSD or LBUSD from my district
Yayo - I'd go to Long Beach over LA
Stanley - "Didn't have the patience?" Were the kids THAT trying? [I sub mostly in San Diego's barrios, & I can't believe L.A. would be THAT much different...]
Yayo - LA is HUGE you have everything rich rich kids. south central and everything in between
Stanley - Why Long Beach over LAUSD?
Yayo - He's young he wanted to make more money. He was in a brand new school and he said he actually had an excellent experience his entire 5 or 6 years.
Stanley - TELL me about huge... I mean, 36 K contracted Ts?!?
Yayo - I live in Long Beach, born and raised here. all 4 of my boys have gone to school here. Pay is the same as LAUSD. Not as big of a district.
Yayo - If I wasn't moving to San Francisco I would be here. They seem to have adequate money. Field trips music, art programs.
Yayo - Several California schools of Distinction
Yayo - Several California schools of Distinction
Stanley - I'm PERSONALLY pleased to hear he stayed 5 or 6 years. At age 55, I'm not even sure I'll be "good" for much more than THAT!
Yayo - 36K to start in LA it's not more I thought it was more like 40K to start
Stanley - Yayo, LAUSD will give me longevity credit for my subbing. Therefore, in '03/'04 I SHOULD start as a step 8 T! Do you know, does Long Beach do likewise?
Yayo - I'm 49 I don't have awful lot of time left myself
Yayo - I would think so. They are pretty much par with LAUSD
Stanley - Starting pay is relative. I've about 80 post grad units, & were I to start with LAUSD in 7/'02, I BELIEVE I'd be @ 53 K!
Yayo - I'm looking for my pay scale for LB hold on
Stanley - Well, since I'm virtually CERTAIN I'm "talking" '03/'04, I'll have to check into Long Beach. Also, can you tell me, do they have "barrio" schools?
Yayo - I can't find it sorry, but it's online I'm sure
Yayo - of course Long Beach has barrio schools, what southern cali area doesn't
Yayo - hello shereling
Yayo - ABC school district is another, right next to Long Beach,. Cerritos area
Yayo - Long Beach has a lot of Asian students and so does Cerritos
Yayo - ABC very good pay, smaller though. If you are actually going to make the move there are a lot of districts. Orange county. Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach,
Stanley - Yayo, I'm talking about 99% ( or -) Latino schools. See, that's where I've experience, as I'm reasonably proficient in Spanish...
Yayo - Come to Long Beach, we have plenty of Spanish speakers
Yayo - you have your BCLAD
Yayo - Now if you really want a contract and you want Spanish speaking students come to Compton and you can start Monday LOL
Stanley - ABC?!? Also, getting the longevity pay is THE linchpin: The difference between step 1 & step 8 is **HUGE** -- particularly @ my age where I might **NEVER** be able to make up the difference!!
Yayo - In Cerritos they all speak English and the Orange county districts too, they do pay better
Stanley - I'm not BCLAD quality, though NO BCLAD T ever COMPLAINS of my Spanish! No, here in San Diego, **THE** toughest schools are those in what I call the "transitional" neighborhoods.
Yayo - Santa Ana is 99% Latino, they are always looking for teachers, especially those that speak Spanish
Stanley - I've NO intention of spending time in a "transitional" school -- neither here nor [certainly] in L.A.!!
Yayo - You want Spanish or would you prefer English speakers. Redodno Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, high pay. They do not hire anyone who does not have their credentials
Yayo - Redondo
Yayo - Manhatten Beach
Stanley - I **TRULY** appreciate the ideas! LAUSD came here to interview, & that's how I got interested. Plus, a subbing acquaintance from here moved in late 7/01. However, I seriously doubt I would accept East Inglewood, where SHE'S working...
Stanley - I have skills to offer Spanish-speakers. Plus, I have difficulty believing the more affluent areas of L.A. are any different than San Diego when it comes to offering contracts to those of us that DON'T fit the "typical" mold!
Yayo - All of those places I mention would be great, if they would give you your steps for experience, highly motivated students, English speaking, nice area and surroundings. Maybe check a few out before you make the leap to LAUSD. I do all my research online
Yayo - I don't know. I think you could probably get a job
Yayo - I came to Compton as a choice. I was hired in Long Beach right out of college in 1997
Yayo - If I had known what I was in for maybe I would not have made that choice
Yayo - I don't fit any of their molds and I haven't had a problem
Stanley - If you don't mind me asking, why Compton when you COULD have had Long Beach?
Yayo - I want to teach Black and Latino students
Yayo - I want to teach in the Urban area
Yayo - In fact the reason I am moving to San Francisco is to go into a new masters program for education. This Sept. will be the programs 3rd year
Stanley - Well, I can contact LAUSD in several wks for "references" to schools. I intend to do that, though I DON'T intend to actually CONTACT the sites for interviews. From that I should be able to "predict" what will be "out there" for the COMING yr.
Yayo - The director of the program told me when I interviewed that the program will become a Masters/PhD by 2004 and I plan to stick with it. I like the hard-core population
Yayo - This program that I'm going into is a master in Urban Education
Yayo - Check out some of the others, you might be pleasantly surprised. Nice talking to you Stanley. bedtime for me
Stanley - Were/are your classes in Compton a MIX of Latino/Black? THAT'S the "transitional" mix that I've found to be **EXPLOSIVE** here in San Diego! [My friend in East Inglewood corroborates that "theory!"]
Yayo - It's hard if that's what you mean but I'm hard
Yayo - We are about 70% Latino at my school but the entire school district is overwhelmingly Latino
Yayo - 1 Asian at our school, 2 whites they are sisters and about 20 Samoans
Yayo - and what's not Latino is Black
Stanley - I don't enjoy dealing with the racial problems I've seen in such schools -- NOT when I feel **SO** powerless because of the sociological issues involved! But, **MY KUDOS** if you've a gift in that area!!
Yayo - I think I kinda thrive on the tension. Go figure. My husband says more power to me if I can handle it
Stanley - THAT'S why I specified what I call a "purely" barrio school: They'll be low performing [language issues], & there will be gangs, but **NOT** the endemic problem of Latinos moving into "traditionally" African-American neighborhoods!
Yayo - There is that tension, definately
Yayo - The bla
Yayo - The Blacks run the school district, but the population is majority Latino.
Yayo - They are not sensitive to their language issues, which increases the tension
Yayo - and there is a conflict in culture
Stanley - An African-Am friend here [a retired MSW!] gets almost IRATE talking of the issue! [& he's not "that" kind of guy!] Latinos move in, PACK the houses [taking away parking, e.g.], DON'T acculturize, & "dis" the Blacks besides! Arrrrrrgh...
Yayo - To each its own. my mom always said. you can't change people. too bad people really feel that way.
Yayo - I'm glad I don't. I'm really going this time. I'm definately coming back to chat. maybe you'll have some good news for me if I see in the room again.
Yayo - night Stanley
Stanley - I **TOTALLY** agree about it being "too bad!"And, since one NEVER sees anything in the media about it, what hope is there?!?!? :-(
Stanley - BEST of EVERYTHING to you, Yayo!:-)
Stanley - Going, going...
