coachjw1 - hi reading
coachjw1 - did you just finish student teaching?
coachjw - I will be student teaching this next semester
bw - this is my first year of teaching. I teach fourth grade in a parochial school.
coachjw - are you a beginnng teacher, Harper?
Harper - I loved my student teaching experience
coachjw - cool, bw
Harper - yes, I'm a beginning teacher
Harper - I teach hearing impaired kids
coachjw - i have coached for four years, if that's worth anything
bw - I student taught in a seventh grade language arts class.
Harper - bw, what state do you teach in?
coachjw - i will be certified in english ed, 7 - 12
Harper - English ed is cool
coachjw - i'm really excited about my student teaching experience
coachjw - i have SO many ideas and questions
Harper - will you be a part time coach during your student teaching?
bw - I loved middle school language arts but wasn't able to find a teaching position om m,iddle school
coachjw - do you think that in-class reading is useful?
coachjw - i will coach this spring
Harper - word of advice- ask all the questions that you can
coachjw - i KNOW i can do it 'cuz i've been commuting 80 miles away/one way to school
Harper - Don't even worry about looking silly by asking a lot of questions
coachjw - twice weekly, worked part-time retail and coached
bw - We did a lot of in class reading, most of the kids didn't read much at home.
coachjw - so, the students will actually read in class
coachjw - ? i mean, the reluctant ones?
Harper - bw, I'm suprised you could not find a middle school position
coachjw - i'm not really interested in middle
coachjw - mostly because i've been coaching at the secondary level and am comfortable there
bw - some times they took turns reading aloud, a few times we had them read parts like a play. They really seemed to like it.
coachjw - i could do middle though and that's where most of the opportunities seem to be
Harper - I teach elementary and it has its moments
coachjw - i plan to experiment with read-alouds, in-class reading time, and Reader's Theater (the concept you were mentioning, bw)
bw - I'm enjoying fourth grade more than I thought I would but having to teach all areas is a bit intimidating.
coachjw - where are you two at?
Harper - I'm sorry I can't be of too much help on the subject of reading, my kids are just beginning to learn sight words
bw - I'm in Columbus, Oh
Harper - I am in VA
coachjw - I'm in IL, I coach in IA
coachjw - that's okay, Harper... your enthusiasm is rubbing off
Harper - teaching all subjects is something
coachjw - and i'm planning to go to MN in july
Harper - looking for a job there coachjw
bw - Are you moving or just visiting?
coachjw - i have made some contacts
Harper - That's great!
coachjw - oh, i'm planning to move, bw
coachjw - i've interviewed with the Minneapolis School District
coachjw - and a suburban district, Hopkins is interested
Harper - Coachjw, do you want to coach and teach or only teach?
coachjw - teach and coach, definitely
bw - My brother lives in Minneapolis. He loves it there. The schools are good and there's alot of growth in the area.
Harper - hello clark. are you a first year or student teacher?
coachjw - i went up for the first time to visit in august
Harper - What state are you from Clark?
coachjw - started looking for info online and stumbled upon the state's education organization
clark - neither- I've been teaching for 12 years.
coachjw - went up for the professional conference with portfolio and resume
Harper - Are you the host of this chat?
clark - I'm from SC
coachjw - what do you teach, Clark?
Harper - Way to go Coachjw, be prepared at all times, you never know what may happen
clark - I teach 7th grade math
coachjw - is your brother in Minneapolis, bw? or is he in a suburb?
coachjw - oh yes, harper... i'm not the new kid
Harper - how do you like 7th graders?
bw - he's in a suburb. I can't remember the name something with Apple...in it?
coachjw - i already have a degree... this is a career change -- coaching inspired me
coachjw - Apple Valley
Harper - I taught 5th graders for 1/2 a year last year
coachjw - like i already live there or something. lol
Harper - oh, I see coachjw
bw - Teaching is a career change for me too. I was a social worker previously.
coachjw - are any of you on block scheduling?
Harper - no
bw - no
clark - 7th graders are interesting. I looped up with my students from 6th grade.
Harper - My one 5th grader, changes classes but not block
coachjw - just curious
Harper - clark, so you have the same kids from last year or a mix of old and new
bw - looping would be fun. I love my class this year and would like to stay with them longer
coachjw - did any of you do your student teaching during the spring semester?
Harper - no, fall
clark - I have a mix of old & new
Harper - Well, when you teach self contained special ed, you loop for many years
Harper - it has positives and negs.
clark - Looping is fun but I don't want to go to the 8th grade w/ them. 2 years is enough!
coachjw - i'm sure... you must have a tremendous amount of energy, Harper
Harper - Well, i will prop have the same kids for about 4 or 5 years
coachjw - lol @ clark!
Harper - Coachjw, if I could find the right amount of hours of sleep, i'd be ok
coachjw - i can relate, Harper!
coachjw - i took three literature classes and a teaching reading class this semester
coachjw - on top of commuting the 80 miles one way
coachjw - i broke down and started drinking coffee this semester
clark - I am a National Board Canidate. Anyone else?
coachjw - not a teacher yet, but National Board looks like a great deal of work
coachjw - i've been looking
Harper - coachjw, i drive 35 min to and 35 min from work and even though it is wonderful thinking, planning, and wind down time, it is hard to stay awake some days
clark - It is & I'm way overwhelmed!
Harper - not right now clark
coachjw - won't it take you like three years to finish this, clark?
Harper - i'm still trying to decide on a masters program
coachjw - and i think my experience as a student-coach-worker-commuter will help me with that, Harper
coachjw - not that it still won't prove difficult
clark - It could take from 1 -3 years. If you don't get enough pts the 1st time you bank the points & keep trying.
coachjw - at least all of this cold and snow will prepare me for MN
coachjw - isn't it expensive too, clark?
Harper - We have not had much wintery weather in VA
coachjw - i'm used to... midwest-born and bred
Harper - how do you begin the national cert. process?
Harper - bw, is your school private?
clark - It cost $3,000 but my state paid for it as long as I get certified within 3 years.
coachjw - Hi Veronica
Harper - neat clark
coachjw - that's cool, clark
Harper - hello veronica
coachjw - Harper, i'm thinking about the website... I can get it for you... brb
Harper - that would be great!
clark - What's really cool,if I get it the state will give an additional $7,500 a year pay incentive for the next 10 years!
Harper - although, I am still trying to decide if I want a masters in special ed, education, or something totally different
Harper - wow, what a good state you work for
coachjw - that's way cool, clark! plus, you can work just about anywhere you want to, right?
Harper - We can hardly get our county to give us anything
Harper - veronica, are you a new teacher or a student teacher?
Harper - bw, is your school private?
Harper - bw, is your school private?
coachjw - www.nbpts.org?
coachjw - i am still checking on that for you, Harper
Harper - ok
clark - Harper, you can find out more about ---well coachjw just gave you the site. Thanks!
coachjw - www.nbpts.org it is
coachjw - no prob, clark! i'm just trying to do my homework
clark - Your good at it!

coachjw - i just remember looking at the site, checking the info, and being intimidated
Harper - veronica, are you a new teacher or a student teacher?
clark - Does antone have snow outside?
coachjw - oh, BIG time here, clark
Harper - So clark, what kinds of things have you done to keep yourself from being burned out?
coachjw - we got hit with about 9" on Sunday and Monday
Harper - Because my population is so demanding, I fear early burn out
coachjw - and i had a final on monday night, so i called the teacher to re-schedule
Harper - Wow, we have been promised snow twice and it missed us both times
clark - Plenty! I haven't reallt started all my writings yet! I have 2 small kids that keep me on my toes!
coachjw - oh, it snowed again on wednesday --- about 3"
Harper - oh, I don't have any kids yet, I haven't learned how to spread my time around yet.
Harper - does your shool close for bad weather?
clark - I miss snow. I grew up in Ohio. It was 70 degrees here today!
coachjw - i don't mind the cold if i can drive around in it

Harper - new job, and new life all at once, It has really been interesting
Harper - thanks
coachjw - i can mail you some snow, Clark!
coachjw - i'd still have some left over
Harper - i have a wonderful husband that never complains about the amount of time i spend on school stuff
clark - Thanks! I miss all the snow days & delays!
coachjw - that's great that you have that support at home
coachjw - lol @ clark!
Harper - i'd like some in the mail please, it seems thats the only way we are going to get any snow. seeing as how we've missed it twice. 100% chances both times
clark - Harper, you do have a great husband! After 12 years, my husband is over my work & complaints!
coachjw - be careful what you wish for!
Harper - when you spend as much time as I do on school stuff, a husband who complains would drive me crazy.
coachjw - okay, my screen just went white...
coachjw - i can read off of the little bar at the bottom
clark - Thanks for chatting! Bedtime!
Harper - I think he understands that it is going to take me a while to get used to what I have to do
coachjw - lol @ harper!
Harper - yes, we have a sing along tomorrow and i have to be ready to sing "nine drummers drumming"
coachjw - good night, clark!
