Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month

Janet/AR/host - Welcome to the Substitute Teacher's Meeting!
stressed - School is HARD
Janet/AR/host - stressed, I take it by your log on name you are stressed out.
kris - anybody looking for full-time work?
Janet/AR/host - stressed, are you a sub?
stressed - Yes- loud children who don't follow rules, and my hay fever is wearing me out.
lee - I am!
Janet/AR/host - Kris, I definately am. What is everyone's certifications?
Deb/AL - kris, I'm looking for summer work. I may be able to get some summer school days... but that depends on enrollment.
lee - Elem. Ed. and Special Ed.
kris - elementary education
stressed - No- full-time music teacher. Just thought I'd listen.
Deb/AL - secondary science, here
Janet/AR/host - How are ya Kschrock?
kris - any suggestions on getting work?
pambre - I am cert. to sub for teacher but not to teach.
stressed - I sub. before my full-time job. It is hard. I am at two schools a day, and for two years was at three a day.
Janet/AR/host - How long has everyone been subbing?
Deb/AL - kris, have you been subbing in any particular schools?
kris - yes. I am frustrated with the long application process though.
stressed - People in our district sub. and get their foot in the door, and usually get hired after that.
pambre - I am a teacher assistant for summer school.
kschrock - I am fine, thanks. In our district, many people who sub a lot are considered first for openings as they come up.
Stanley - I'm in my 4th yr, though I'm now on a leave replacement contract.
Janet/AR/host - kris, I totally understand.
kris - This is my second year as a sub
stressed - /sound door
lee - Hey, Stanley! I thought it was neat that you and Casub will be next door to each other!!
Deb/AL - I did the app. process, but also submitted a letter of interest directly to the principal at my first choice school. I got an interview & a job offer through a fairly aggressive campaign.
Jackie - I've been subbing for 7 years
Stanley - pambre, How does that pay compare? Also, will it last ALL summer?
Janet/AR/host - kschrock, what about us who have to have a full time job and can't make it on sub pay. Which means limited time subbing.
pambre - Stanley we will want to hear reports from you two.
Deb/AL - I agree with lee about the next-door thing. **singing "it's a small world after all...**
Stanley - YES! That blew what mind I have left! <G>
lee - LOL Stanley!
kris - How do teachers cope when we can't get interview until the summer? I have a child and may need to think about afterschool care.
Janet/AR/host - I have been subbing here for 3 years and still no interviews.
Stanley - Deb, So you've been offered a contract for next yr?
pambre - Stanley what are your chances of job next year?
kschrock - I sit next to the desk that receives the applications for jobs, and there are literally hundreds. When a principal comes in, and recognizes a name, it moves that app to the top of the pile. The other thing that happens quite often in our district is the subs are considered first for the long-term subbing, which pays as well as a first year teacher after two weeks.
Deb/AL - since I knew I'd be getting a real job next year, I've already started thinking about my sub folder. I'm really glad to have experienced this end of things.
Stanley - pambre, Really hard to say... I only took charge of the Ss today, so I've not yet been observed doing what I'd be contracted for.
Lisa - Have any of you received heard about the states who are making their applicants fill out an app on line and then pick interviewees from a central database?
pambre - Vicki are you a pert. sub.
Janet/AR/host - Kschrock, I am considered a very good sub by the teachers and get requested but has not made a difference yet.
Janet/AR/host - Lisa, I hear Las Vegas is doing that.
Lisa - I am in PA and had to fill out a resume for that took me like 6hours to complete. blah!
Deb/AL - Stanley, yes, luckily I have. Technically it's a one year job, in for someone on maternity leave. However, she's not planning on coming back, and even if she did, another high school is opening in 2001.
Stanley - kschrock, Are you in a large or small district?
kschrock - Janet, since good subs are hard to find, they probably don't want to lose you in that role! :-)
JD - Lisa- I live in PA and haven't had to do that...what part do you live in?
Lisa - I am not making much sense, long day.
Vicki - Yes, I'm a permanent sub, but that job will end Wed. Then I go back on the rotational list (and my pay drops $5 a day) till the end of the year. I've already got 4 more days scheduled after Wed.
Jackie - Deb that sounds great!
Lisa - Philly-area
kschrock - Stanley...8 schools, 4000 students
pambre - Vicki do you get sick days etc.
Stanley - *SUPER*, Deb! My congratulations!! :-)
lee - I am also thinking of what to put in my sub folder, and how to put together my classroom policies. It's looking real good for me to get a permanent position!
Janet/AR/host - kschrock, Yes that is true but very unfair for me. I have been to outside district schools within a 45 min. driving radius.
Vicki - No sick days, no benefits at all.
JD - that's great lee!
Janet/AR/host - lee, I can help with a sub folder.
Jackie - Lee, that's great news. I'll kweep my fingers crossed for you
lee - Thanks Janet! I can use all the help I can get! lol
pambre - Stanley do you get sick days etc.
kris - lee, are you looking for full-time work?
kschrock - Janet, I know it is very unfair...
Janet/AR/host - LEE! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!1
Vicki - Our district needs to look long and hard at its sub situation for next year. Things are getting very serious (shortage)...districts around us are raising pay, so i hope my district follows, too
Deb/AL - Janet, I had a friend interview for Las Vegas - she hated the interview. She's sped & the "interview" consisted of a person asking specific (test like) questions off of a sheet. She feels the only thing they could have learned from that is whether she still has a bunch of facts memorized, not whether or not she can handle a classroom or deal with sped students.
lee - hanks everyone for the encouragement. It's been a long road, and everyone on tnet has been such an inspiration!
Stanley - lee, Deb: I REALLY like the Helping New Ts materials that are available thru the Beginning/New T Board here!
stressed - Yes, teachers and principals do hate to lose good subs. They really make things run smoothly. We appreciate you!!!! I have also been doing academic assistance this year, and , as you know, kids can sense a competent sub. and one who just keeps things chaotic. (You know what I mean- some calm things with their confidence, and then there are others.)
Janet/AR/host - lee, helpful student(s). discipline plan. extra work. I also bring my own.
Lisa - I interviewd with Las Vegas too at a teacher con. very interesting district.
Janet/AR/host - I feel that method is very impresonal.
Jackie - My screen went blank for a minute too. I think it does that sometimes
Stanley - Arrrrgh, Deb! Las Vegas is too, TOO deperate to be treating applicants the way they treated your friend!
Deb/AL - Vicki, that's the same concern here! We're already $5 below the nearest (geographically) district, but we have had a severe shortage now at the end of the school year. One friday we had 20 teachers out without subs!
Lisa - another thing for a sub folder is when/where the class goes for specialties, where the bathroom/lounge is...
Janet/AR/host - Lee, a sub sheet for the sub to fill out about the day for the teacher. sick referrals, classroom schedule, class roster, classroom rules, helpful teachers in case the sub needs to ask a question.
lee - The district I'm in , at the last board meeting raised sub pay from 52/72 dollars to 100--for RETIRED TEACHERS, not the rest of us!
Jackie - And please remember to list any duties the sub will have to cover
Janet/AR/host - Jackie, yes the duties are very important.
Vicki - It will be even more serious at my school next year, as they announced today that we will be losing all our title assistants. These assistants are pulled many times to sub in emergencies because most of them have teaching or bachelors degrees.
Deb/AL - I'd really hate to have to get a sub next year. I'm a floater, in a different room every period. That can't be fun.
Janet/AR/host - Lee, $44.oo a day here for certified subs.
JD - yeah duties for the sub to cover is important! Many teachers have neglected to mention those and then other teahers come by asking why didnt' you do that and you are at a loss!:-)
lee - I'm thinking about leaving a copy of the report form I use now in my folder. Modified, of course, since mine has my name and # on it.
Jackie - I do a lot of meeting coverages at one school and enjoy it. Don't think I'd like to do it all the time, tho
Stanley - There's a book called "Big Buck$" which is about a classroom money system. Paradoxically, it has a nice section re making a sub folder!
Lisa - we never get subs, and they always have to pull the specialty teachers to cover. Of course, that means, no prep for the rest of us.
pambre - Janet who is willing to sub for 45.
lee - Stanley, where can we find that book?
Jackie - We have a lot of trouble getting subs at the middle school.
kschrock - Passwords to do online attendance and where the fire exits are may be helpful info to have, too.
Janet/AR/host - pambre, not very many! That is why I am unable to sub all the time. I sub on off days and vacation days.
stressed - Lisa, that is a bummer on two accounts. The sts. need their related arts classes and you need planning time.
Janet/AR/host - Jackie, I will not sub in Junior high. Students are way too hormonal.
Lisa - I am up to 45 lost preps this year so far.
Stanley - lee, I believe directly from the publishers/authors, though I got mine (with a wait) from amazon.com
Jackie - You're right, stressed, but subbing for special studies is hard, and not everyone can do it.
stressed - Yes, having taught in middles school, it is not surprising why subs. often will not go there. Can be really tough and oppressive.
lee - Thanks, Stanley!
JD - I agree janet! I have tried the upper grades and perfer not to do it again!
Deb/AL - Jackie, oddly enough, although I said only middle and high school, I did only 3 days in middle schools (since Jan.) - everything else was HS. Though I did get a perm.sub. position in march,, so I'm not really a full-term say-so.
Janet/AR/host - I did like spec. ed high school though.
Lisa - I only subbed in middle school three times. Once, the admin. put me in an auditorium with 120 7&8th graders for 3 hours at a time with nothing to do.
Jackie - Yeah, middle school subbing can be tough unless you really enmjoy kids that age. Even though I do, it still has it's moments.
Stanley - Janet, Hormonal MS Ss? What? Surely you jest? <G>
kschrock - I was a middle school library media specialist for 7 years before becoming Tech Coordinator for the district, and I like that age group the very best!
lee - Oh, my, Lisa! How did you survive!!
stressed - That is outrageous.
pambre - Lisa what happen
Janet/AR/host - I started doing a riddle game with the younger students. K=3 ! They loved it.
Marie - I didn't get called to work anywhere today.
Janet/AR/host - Stanley *grin*
Lisa - Needless to say, I got pencils and such thrown at me often.
Janet/AR/host - Welcome Marie to the sub teacher's meeting.
Stanley - Lisa, Did they give you any materials, or did you just have to wing it?
Jackie - That happens this time of year. I didn't get a call one day last week, Marie.
stressed - I wonder why- we have teachers out daily. Even the last two days, there will be some out. Used to, they didn't allow that.
Janet/AR/host - Welcome Mark to the sub teachers meeting.
Lisa - I had brought a loud, metal gym whistle with me, and it sounded really loud in an auditorium
lee - I feel lucky, Marie. I worked every day last week, and have 3 already scheduled for this week, including today! Not everyoe gets that much work, I've discovered.
Lisa - I had a tv and some barney videos. lol
Jackie - Lisa, I love it! Bet the kids came to attention!
stressed - That is where the principal's job comes in! You should not have to be abused.
Deb/AL - stressed, sometimes there's a good reason. I'm subbing for the maternity case I'm taking over for next year right now (only 2 weeks left) -- the baby came early!
lee - LOL, Lisa!
Stanley - Marie, I got pulled from my class for over an hour because the District was pressed for subs. When the sub arrived she'd already turned down 2 previous jobs over the weekend!
Vicki - The way my schedule looks now, I will have worked all but 4 days this year (permanent subs don't begin work until Oct. and finish mid May)
lee - Great, Vicki! I have about 130 days this year. I've earned my year's worth of state teacher retirement, so I'm happy.
Jackie - That sort of thing happens here too. Things are a little better because the college studentsa who sub are coming home. But the teachers don't always like having them in their classrooms.
Janet/AR/host - I am able to sub 5 days a month. Does not sound like much buy that is all I can do with my full time job.
Stanley - Barney?, couldn't you have lobbied for Tele-Tubbies? Might have helped them with gender typing, you know! <G>
stressed - Congrats., Lee
Janet/AR/host - LOL @ Stanley!
Janet/AR/host - That is GREAT lee.
Lisa - I love you, you love me, a stressed out teach-er I - I be!
Jackie - Be nice, Stanley. Barney's feelings are easily hurt. And you wouldn't want a purple dinosuar mad at you, now would you?
Deb/AL - Some days when I subbed I had Jolly Ranchers with me & played a game of trivia - the first correct answer got a jolly rancher. Oddly enough, the seniors were the ones who really got into this.
Janet/AR/host - Does everyone usually know what grade and teacher they will sub for before subbing?
Stanley - One of my employers works Sept thru Aug, so it's possible for me to sub around 220 days/yr for "regular" school.
Jackie - I'm always told. But sometimes by the time I get to school, they'll put me someplace else.
lee - I've used alot of taking recess time away, and Jolly Ranchers if it's the teacher's policy lately. The kiddos know it's the end of the year, and boy, are they antsy!!
Deb/AL - I always did, Janet. One district used a computerized sub-finder, the other a caller, but they always let me know the teacher's name & class (since I'm secondary, that's what mattered).
Vicki - I usually do....sometimes by the time I get there they have changed it.....I usually end up getting sent to the tougher classes....it depends on what other subs are coming to the building.
Stanley - Never thought of THAT, Jackie -- & I have a vivid imagination! :-)
Jackie - I'll say, Lee. They're acting like loons!
Janet/AR/host - Deb, I do a Student(s) of the Day. Students love this. The students of the day get a pencil and an eraser and a certificate. Or a lollipop and certificate.
lee - Janet, I'm down to subbing for one district, and I know all the teachers, so I know in advance, but the sub caller usually tels me anyway.
Marie - Our computer always states classroom and gradge level
Jackie - Gee, Stanley, I never would have guessed that. LOL
Janet/AR/host - I never know. I asked once and she was unsure who she was gonna put me with. But I did not care to know. I just show up and then find out.
Deb/AL - Thank you, all, for being a great group tonight. I'm sorry, but I must go now. B'bye. See y'all on the board!
Marie - I just received a direct call from a teacher tonight. She is requesting me for Th. and Fr. this week. Unfortunately, Fr. is Field Day, which means games outside all day long.
lee - Janet, that approach certainly makes life more interesting!
Janet/AR/host - Bye Deb and thanks for attending!
lee - Marie, I was Primary PE teacher last Thursday, and took all the classes outside. I had a very sunburned face at 3:30! LOL
pambre - Janet that must be hard not knowing who you are for the day. Mentally I prepare myself for the day.
Stanley - Today I got put into a G-2 uncovered class with NO notice since I had P.E. Prep 1st thing in the A.M. Had to scurry around to find my stickers! :-) [Left my Barney @ home, however! :-(]
Janet/AR/host - lee, I felt that if they tell me and I said no then I felt they thought I did not want to sub in a specific classroom. I am not like that. It does not matter to mek.
Marie - Wish me luck on teaching Middle School Band on June 2. The classes have about 50 students.
Vicki - I must go.....got to kids in bed for school tomorrow. Bye!
lee - Yeah, Janet, I can see your point.
Jackie - Janet, you're much more flexible than I am. There are some classrooms I prefer not to have, although I'll take them if they would be going without a sub otherwise.
again - Good luck, you all, and keep the faith. Thanks for helping us in the trenches. I have been where you are. Thanks, and have a good night! Hope I can sleep tonight, but last night I talked to a teacher in Hawaii and I live in S.C. We were six hours different. Neat. Goodnight.
Janet/AR/host - Yes it does make for an interesting day. I usually get grades K-3. Mostly 2-3.
lee - a question for everyone: Do you find that your day goes more smoothly if you have good sleep the night before? Mine is frequently interrupted due to taking my hubby to his semi, and on those days I seem to have a harder time of it.
Jackie - That's a neat age, Janet.
Stanley - pambre, How long will your aide position last this summer?
again - Yes- we had that trouble getting a sub for field day, which lasted until 1:00 Friday! I gave the test, etc.
Janet/AR/host - Jackie, I sure am hoping I get interviewed with the district I sub for. But not sure. Welcome tj to the sub meeting.
tj - Hi I'm a teacher and I just want to say hats off to all of you subs
Marie - The day goes more smoothly for me when the classroom is organized and the teacher has given me a sensible lesson plan.
Jackie - Lee, I usually do better on a good night's sleep. But then again there are someday's I'm better off if I'm not completely awake.
lee - Thanks, tj. It's nice to be appreciated.
again - Yes, Lee. My nerves are better with sleep. too. Not so jumpy.
Jackie - Thanks, tj!
Janet/AR/host - lee, via sub folder.......A seating chart.
pambre - My job is 5 weeks ie 18 days. I will be making $11.6 an hour. Thus I make almost as much as teaching as a sub.
Marie - I want all contract teachers to know that I really love teaching school on a day to day basis, but I am in awe of all the extra things you permanent teachers have to manage all year long
Janet/AR/host - Tj, thanks so very much!
lee - Oh, yes. How about class lists, as well?
Stanley - lee, With a good night's sleep I'm on top of things quicker, & as we ALL know, that's worth it's weight in Au!! <G>
Jackie - Marie, that's one of the reasons I like subbing. I'm just not ready for that kind of commitment right now
again - Thanks, Marie. True- day after day is hard.
Marie - I need class lists and name tags. Some teachers don't have a list of the kids'
Janet/AR/host - lee, I mentioned that one earlier.
lee - I've subbed many times with no class lists, and I hate it, especially as I'm responsible for every student who is supposed to be there!
Jackie - AH, yes, class lists! Didn't have any of those today.
Stanley - tj, Hats off to YOU!! I'm always amazed @ the time Ts spend preparing for me!!
Janet/AR/host - lee, also ones that go to spec. ed. The ones that get pulled out.
lee - Sorry, Janet. Sometimes I foget stuff. Must be old age. The mind os the first thing to go, ya know! :)
again - Stanley, it's like hitting a high note from the top instead of having to scoop up to it. Yes, it helps to be with it.
Jackie - And while we're making a wish list, how about some answers keys to all those worksheets they leave us?
again - I like that analogy.
Janet/AR/host - Jackie, GREAT IDEA!
Marie - I want us longtime subs to think of ourselves as specialists. I have a reputation for getting the job done and for having a great rapport with the students.
Janet/AR/host - lee, LOL.......I know about old age. I am in my 40's.
Stanley - pambre, What will you do after that? You're in Chicago, right?
Janet/AR/host - Marie, that is great, I am too.
again - Yes, I have spent hours on plans when I had a fever and should have been asleep or at least resting. Lots of ts. think it is easier to just go and teach instead of writing it all out.
Marie - I agree with Stanley--some teachers practically live through the day(s) that they will miss by virtue of the very thorough plans that they leave.
Jackie - Today I told a 7th grade class I'd been teaching for a hundred years. One of the girls gasped and said, "Really?" I didn't think I looked that bad! LOL
Janet/AR/host - pambre, I am gonna vacation in Chicago in July! Can't wait.
lee - LOL @ Jackie.
again - True, Jackie, esp. when it is a subject you are not familiar with. That has happened to me this year with academic assistance. You could try to ask a neighbor teacher.
Marie - again, I am still trying to figure out when some of the very ill teachers magically leave their plans. Is it possible that some ts drag themselves into their bldg. at 6 am to write up plans????
Stanley - Marie, I like the handle "per diem" because we know our "stuff" JUST like our contracted brethren (sp?).
pambre - I have 2 weeks before summer school and 2 weeks after before HS registration ( I help with that for pay) Thus I will have short break. I have found there are lots of little jobs district will pay you for if you ask.
again - Jackie, kids have no sense of age, sometimes, do they???!!!
Jackie - I do. But usually the neighbor teacher is teaching a different subject.
tj - I as a teacher try to leave indepth plans as your job as a sub is hard enough
Janet/AR/host - again, maybe have emergency plans available for those times. That way one can get their rest and get well. One teacher called in sick and she had put in the sub folder several emergency sub lesson plans.
Janet/AR/host - This also came with worksheets and all. It was great.
again - Some of them do, yes. I have seen them do that at the middle school, Marie. Dedicated, huh?
Marie - Stanley, I like that per diem, too.
Jackie - Yes, Marie, I've known teachers who've done just that. A couple have faxed their plans in. That works well.
pambre - Janet is vacation include fun or looking for work.
lee - Janet, I really like that idea. I know me, and I can't see me dragging myself into school delivering plans when I'm sick.
Marie - Yes, these teachers are dedicated.
Jackie - At our middle school, there is a sub folder kept at the offer for each teacher and it must always have emergency plans in it.
Janet/AR/host - pambre, FUN!!!
again - True- I had already thought of that, but you could get your principal to assign buddy teachers that will know vaguely what one other is doing. Just a thought.
Marie - I have had teachers FAX plans to school. One teacher even had a neighbor boy deliver her plans as he attends her school, too.
Janet/AR/host - lee, it sure helped when the teacher I subbed for that had called in sick. She just told the one that called me to tell me where the emergency sub. folder was. Everything was there for me.
sue - I have opened emergency plans-blank
Janet/AR/host - Welcome sue to the sub teacher's meeting.
Stanley - Marie, YES, sometimes that DOES happen! Dedication, huh?
Jackie - They have one teacher in each middle school cluster who does just that. And the elementary school teachers are all very helpful. I'm very lucky to sub where I do!
sue - working high school 3 days this week so faR
Jackie - Sue, that must have been really scary!
Janet/AR/host - sue, that is terrible. What did you do?
again - I have taken records and things to teachers who live close to me. (music records, not the written kind)
Marie - Sometimes pod or neighboring teachers seem very saavy about each other's classrooms, and other times next door teacher seem to barely know each other.
lee - Did anyone mention including in the sub folder the names of kids whith diabetes or other medical conditions?
Janet/AR/host - Welcome NewGrad to the sub teacher's meeting.
Jackie - It depends on how well the teams work together.
sue - I forget what class it was now-survived day
again - Marie, a lot of that is due to personalities and how well they relate to each other. We talk about that often in our school, which has lots of cliques.
Jackie - Lee, absolutely. That's why the office keeps these folders for us to use!
Janet/AR/host - sue, Somehow we survive don't we. LOL Makes for a very interesting day!
Marie - I am amazed at how many new grads begin subbing this late in the year. The students are a bit frisky at this time of year...
sue - I went sub high school shop class end of March-last lesson plan was Feb 22
again - Marie- understatement! Trust me.
lee - Oh, Sue!
sue - frisky isn't the word for it
Janet/AR/host - Students are very frisky now! LOL
Jackie - It's hard to sub when you're going to school full time. The college kids need the money and experience. With many of the women who sub busy with their won kids at the end of the year, it works out well.
pambre - Frisky does not begin to describe students this time of year.
sue - worked all except about 30 days tthis yesar-tiook few days off attend things kids were in etc
Janet/AR/host - The schools here are changing to magnet schools and I am taking a couple of days off from full time job to help some pack up their rooms as they will be moving to other schools here.
lee - Great, sue!
NewGrad - I need advice... I'm a sub and sub everyday. I have encountered a teacher at the school that I sub for who uses inappropriate language In the class, while students are present. I find this to be horrible as well as unprofessional to say the least. My question: Do I report it?
Jackie - How about off the wall, Pambre
pambre - NewGrad what grade level.
pambre - Right Jackie!
Janet/AR/host - New Grad, do you mean foul language or wrong usage of language?
again - NewGrad, yes, I would tell the principal. If you don't, chances are probably good that a student will go home and report something, and the teacher will get reprimanded.
NewGrad - Pambre, special ed, (but fairly high functioning) high school aged.
Janet/AR/host - pambre, gonna go to Cubs game and GREAT AMERICA and some Museums.
sue - New grad-I aGree but many do it-nothing ever done
again - I got told not to say "shut up" one time, although the principal didn't mind it. Kids push you at times.
pambre - HS> teachers do use strong lang. at times.
NewGrad - Janet, I mean foul language
Jackie - I find inappropriate language unacceptable from the students. I would expect the teachers to be even more careful. But someone might have been having a bad day.
Janet/AR/host - New Grad, that is totally unprofessional and I think something should be said.
lee - Speaking of vacations, I get to ride in my hubby's truck this summer while he works. I'll be visiting some of the states where you all live.
tj - lee where are you visiting
Jackie - Today one of the kids asked me if it was OK for a teacher to tell kids to shut up. I said I didn't think it was something I would do, but didn't know what the rules were.
Janet/AR/host - Lee, I live in the town where President Clinton grew up. I live less than a block away from his boyhood town.
again - Cool, Lee. I haven't even sat down with my family and the calendar yet, I have been so "out of it", just surviving. Know what I mean?
NewGrad - this is not a one time thing. This is how she speaks. Not TO the kids, but in front of the kids, when she's upset at anoher adult in the school...
lee - Well, my other half delivers to Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, and tomorrow he's going to Michigan. I imagine those will be some of the places I see. It's hard to say for sure.
Jackie - I'm taking the wummer off. we'll be spending some time in NY, wisiting our kids who live there.
sue - Jackie-wait til you get bad class don't listen after being told 2 or 3 times to be quiet
NewGrad - Jackie, where in NY?
lee - Yeah, again, I sure do know what you mean.
again - OOps. She may need to get a handle on herself. What saith you?
Stanley - Arrggggghhhh... server bumped me! Well, what do I expect from free service, right?
Jackie - Oh, I've had lot's of those! And I'll have to admit I've broken my own ruule on more than one occassion. But I try not to say it.
Janet/AR/host - Welcome Kim to the sub teacher's meeting.
again - My folks are from N.Y. state, originally.
lee - LOL Stanley. I've gotten bumped, and I pay for my service.
again - Sue, that's what I am saying. (about why I said shut up)
Stanley - pambre, I was going to post that I'm glad your district takes care of you -- considering all you do for THEM!! :-)
sue - these end of the year are almost wasted days
Jackie - Daught is a graduate student at SUNY at Stoney Brook. Son will be living and working in Manhattan this summer.
lee - I agree, sue.
Janet/AR/host - sue, that is sooooooo true!
Jackie - Sue, we were just saying today that it's almost impossible to teach anything after spring break.
Stanley - lee, Do you want me to run get the "Big Buck$" addy? I've got it downstairs!
tj - This is our last week and the last three days are half days all they do is eat breakfast and lunch
sue - children should not have to be told over and over-generation todaay are different
again - True- but they do give me a chance to do some fun activities. We always say, let's tell the kids when they come one day that it is the last day! That way, they wouldn't have time to get wild.
lee - Yes, please, Stanley! Thank you!!
pambre - Stanley I think if subbed asked for more, they might get more. It takes going in for a personal talk with the admin. staff.
NewGrad - Thanks everyone for the advice. I want to be careful not to over step my boundaries, but these (spec ed) kids need all the stability and appropriateness that they can get.
Jackie - You're right, Pambre. And it helps to have a supportive administration, which not everyone has.
Stanley - Good pt, pambre! I'll go do it, lee! :-)
sue - true neww grad
Janet/AR/host - Good Luck NewGrad, I hope we were able to help.
NewGrad - Does everyone have work for tomorrow?
Jackie - NewGrad, I didn't realize they were sped kids. This sort of behavior on the part of the teacher shouldn't be tolerated.
again - True, NewGrad. I admire your caring attitude. We had a teacher call a special ed. kid kevin"Gump" one year, as if to make fun of him, and we let him know we did not appreciate it. Same idea. Respect for the st.
again - Right, Jackie.
lee - I do, newgrad.
sue - this teacher needs set example for the kids
Kim - I've got a 7th grade math class tomorrow, newgrad
NewGrad - I'be got to be up bright and early, good Night. :)
Jackie - I'm doing 7th grade science tomorrow, Kim. Good luck
lee - Good night, newgrad.
Janet/AR/host - I do at my full time job at the hospital.
pambre - I have pre-school sped class .
sue - I am high school honor cl;asses trhis week-Chemistry,Science110,Science1111,12
again - Good luck, all of you. You are great.
Janet/AR/host - I would like to THANK everyone for attending. Hope you all can attend again next month.
Jackie - Wow, that's a change from middle school!
Stanley - lee, It's published by Maupin House, 1-800-524-0634. Don't know about a URL, but I see a <jgrady@maupinhouse.com>
NewGrad - Janet I didn't realize you worked at a hosp. What do you do?
lee - Thank you, Janet!
sue - school will be out next month!
lee - Thanks you, Stanley!
Janet/AR/host - New Grad, I am a Sec. in the Radiology Dept. Have worked there for 21 plus years. Trying to get a teaching position.
Kim - Jackie- I only sub at one junior high. The kids know me and we usually have a good time. However, lately I've been writing a lot of referrals.
tj - pambre you will love the pre-k special ed class. I teach pre-k special ed and love it Good luck! Where are you at?
Jackie - I think I might have been bumped off again!
again - Wow- I am not the only one with two jobs- a church music job as well as two schools. It's busy, huh? I am taking a break from teaching private piano and organ and flute. Too busy with my 13 y.o. twins.
lee - Stanley, I will check this out asap. I appreciate the help!
Stanley - I'll sure try, Janet! Since I'll be next door to Casub then, I'll have to work on HER to! <G>
NewGrad - Good Night. Everyone have a GREAT day tomorrow...
sue - bye
Janet/AR/host - Thanks Stanley. I worked full time and went to college full time it was very hard.
Stanley - lee, It's only $11.95! I've printed the money & will explain it to my 4/5s tomorrow!
lee - Weel, I have to go--have to get truck driver up in an hour or so and take him out. See you all next time, and thanks for the input!
Kim - again - I have two jobs also. I just got home from the department store.
lee - That's not bad at all, Stanley.
pambre - tj I am in aurora il. It is class for 3 to 4 year olds.
lee - Bye, everyone
again - Thank you, Janet, for hosting. My best friend worked radiology at one time, too. Goodnight.
Janet/AR/host - Thanks everyone and have a great month of subbing/teaching!!! bye bye
Stanley - lee, Enjoyed it! Rest well after you get hubby off to work!
again - Kim, two shifts- I admire you. Goodnight.
Stanley - Kim, You're not the Kimberlee who has a listserve, are you?
tj - pambre good luck and I hope you enjoy your 3-4 year olds as much as I do mine in Fl
Kim - no, i'm not Kimberlee
tj - Bye and thanks to all of you wonderful subs
again - Are 3 and 4 yr. olds as much fun as kindergartners?
Stanley - pambre, I've GOT to send you a copy of an E-mail Esme sent me, if you know who she is. You made her VERY happy! :-)
tj - Yes they are
Stanley - Kim, The person I mentioned also has a 2nd job in a store. Don't know how you do it, believe me! :-)
tj - The only difference is that pre-k special ed may have diapers
again - Good, 'cause I may have them too in a few years. Just have had k. for two years. They are so easy to motivate.
tj - again whatever you do they think is great
Stanley - TJ, My 1st yr of subbing I did a LOT of SH 2-yr olds. They called it the "Infant Care Program."
Stanley - mandro, Do you sub? If so, where & what grades?
again - Yes, how true, and they laugh at my funny ways when I act "goofy" on purpose to see what they will do. So cute. I miss that stage in my own boys, you know? Well past that now! Into voice changes, etc.
tj - Stanley where is that. We have a birth to three program here . They then go to the 3-5 program
again - What is SH?
Stanley - San Diego, specifically San Diego Unified, tj.
Stanley - Severely Handicapped
again - Hey, I had just guessed that when you said it! Coincidence! Different titles, different places, I guess. We have had profound before.
tj - where are you again?
again - I am in S.C. We had E.H. then E.D., or vice versa, for example.
tj - Stanley do you do a lot of subbing in spec ed. I have always taught special ed.
Stanley - Last yr I also did a class with nothing but autistic Kinders. THAT was an awakening as I had never previously been cognizant of autism.
again - We have several autistic kids, and I wrote a paper on autism and music in college. Inteeresting to see them respond.
tj - again i am in Fl and we have ED and SED
Stanley - tj, I pride myself on being versatile. When I do SPED I often get call backs. That's how I did so much of the Infant Care program my 1st yr.
again - I thought I wanted to go into music therapy, but I am glad I chose music ed. Different approach, etc.
tj - again it must have been an interesting paper. I have one autistic pre-k now and he is a challenge but you can see progress. He is very smart.
Stanley - I'm always amazed that Subs shy away from SPED. Often I hear, "But I'm not trained..."
tj - that's wonderful Stanley. We need subs like you. Some won't take a special ed class when they find out what it entails.
again - Yes, ours are making progress too. The beats are supposed to help get through to them. Some kids love to play instruments, and seem drawn to them. (natural response for all)
Lynne - Sorry, folks that I joined you so late. Stanley, HI. You've been so great with your chatboard responses.
Stanley - tj, The class I mentioned had 1 adult/child. The 1 SPED T was someone for whom I'd worked @ another site in another capacity. What is the significance of brushing, can you tell me?
again - They feel threatened due to inadequacies, real or perceived, I am sure.
tj - I'd love to have any ideas with music for these students
again - Really? How would I contact you?
Stanley - Greetings, Lynne! You sent me the log sheet, right?
Lynne - Oops, I'm out of my league here, I don't know that much about special ed yet.
Lynne - Yep, Stanley. Did it come across the wires OK?
Stanley - Lynne, But that's pretty much our point! You're not expected to as a sub, but you DO need to have a sense for working with people, both the kids AND parapros!
tj - I'll give you my e-mail address if you'd send me some stuff
Lynne - Sorry to interrupt your topic here. I just was in the mood to chat about subbing. I had a great day today. Taught in my major--everything.
Stanley - It was BEUUUUUTIFUL! :-) Would you mind sending the other 2?
Joyce - tj, I am "again". My screen went blank... again! (I was "stressed" first!) How would I contact you?
tj - Hi Lynne
Stanley - I'm the Secretary of our County's Visiting T's Assn, & I was thinking of running them off in case our members wanted to use them!
Joyce - tj, okay. I can send it privately?? This is new to me, still.
Stanley - What's your major, Lynne?
Lynne - Hi Tj!! I have been reading a lot of things lately on special ed, IEP's etc. It's amazing how much the school is supposed to do for the kids. One district I know is strapped beyond belief right now.
Lynne - I am a secondary education English major.
Joyce - Trust me, the sp. ed teachers hate writing IEPS.
Stanley - tj, In your area how many Ss might be in a 3-5 Special Day class?
Lynne - I never had one special ed course 20 years ago when I went to college. But I have been rubbing shoulders with special ed teachers and I find them a dedicated group.
tj - could be up to 10 with 1 teacher and 1 assistant
Stanley - Lynne, Are there openings in your area for contracts in your major? Or, is that not your goal?
Joyce - tj- be in touch if you want. I am going to have to compile more stuff, as it is in different piles right now. Good project.
Stanley - That's about the ave I've encountered here. However, a friend is struggling with 17 & 2 aides! Plus, the mom of 1 of those sued the District last yr!
Joyce - Lynne, they'd have to be, to put up with the mess they do.
Joyce - Stanley, we had that happen, too.
Stanley - Amen, Joyce! The *PAPERWORK*!!
Lynne - Stanley, I am really not sure right now. I don't want to take time away from my 7 and 13 year old sons. I love the freedom per diem subbing gives me. Yet there's a teacher in me, too, who sometimes wants to jump in with both feet. I would like a part time position right now, if I take one with a contract.
Joyce - Also, I have to have a sp. ed. class with a regular class, two times a week. I do not like that, due to the needs not being met.
Joyce - Lynne, I hear you! Having 13 y.o. twins, I can relate.
Stanley - Well, here's praying that pans out for you! Where are you located? Also, if you were Math &/or Science they'd find a way, no?
Lynne - Right now, I will not step into the special ed room with the behavior problem children-I got a chair thrown across the room and kids leaving the room as a prank. I was way out of my league.
Stanley - Joyce, How a SPED & reg class together?
Joyce - For scheduling purposes and for "mainstreaming". You should see it. Yuk.
Stanley - Lynne, the chair was in a SPED class? Where was the parapro? Also, what age were the Ss?
Joyce - go braves!!!
Joyce - My son did that,
Stanley - Joyce, what ages are that mix? And how many Ss in each?
Joyce - Is the parapro and aide?
tj - Joyce I know that is difficult. mainstreaming doesn't always work
Lynne - I actually got offered a full time position in a private school, but by the time I get there I've crossed many traffic backups. The pay is 17,000 for full time!! I just can't see that.
Joyce - About 22 first graders with 10 special ed., low level. Other class is 18 third-graders with about 15 older ed kids. They do not get along well!
Lynne - The parapro stepped out. She doesn't seem to like it when the subs come in. I have finally gotten a warm response from her. It took a year and a half for her to respect me.
Stanley - BRUTAL pay, Lynne! With luck I can gross 22K in San Diego as a Sub, though I must work 220 days for it.
Stanley - Joyce, I use parapro = aide, though that may not be technically correct.
tj - How much longer do you have left in the year.
Lynne - So I am just going to wait for a while and have a good time doing what I do. I really enjoy the districts I sub in now.
Joyce - Stanley, I went to San Diego for an orff music convention in 1988 or so. Great, except it rained!
Lynne - June 15th is the last day where I sub
Stanley - Joyce, so that was 40 kids together?? How many adults??
Stanley - Ha, rain in San Diego, huh? I'd say you were star-crossed!! <G>
Lynne - Oh, I forgot to answer...the student who threw the chair was a seventh grader.
tj - Our students are finished May 19 and we are finished on May 24. Summer school or ESY starts June 5
Joyce - Two adults, and not quite 40, but it felt like it. Our sts's last day is Thursday.
Lynne - Wow! That early!! We only had two snow days here in PA. When does your school year start????
Stanley - What do you do after that, Lynne? Wow, am I EVER thankful 1 of my employers is yr around & MULTI-TRACKED!!
Joyce - Actually, only one adult in the third-grade mix. Sorry. See why I hated it? They fuss all the time, and try to goof off, anyway. By themselves, they are better.
Lynne - define multitracked! 8-)
Stanley - Joyce, uh, I can see why you're not fond of that situation...
tj - We start Aug 1 students start Aug 7
Joyce - July 31 this year, August 1 last year! We had two snow days too.
Lynne - Joyce, I am not ignoring you. I am trying to get the gist of what your topic is about here.
Stanley - Multi-tracked = 4 Ts for 3 rooms. 1 of the 4 is a "flex" T, using the room of a T who is off track.
tj - Stanley I taught on year round school for 4 years. Only a few places have it still here. We were the 1st county in Fl
Lynne - AH-Ha! We start in September--you know, "see you in September..."
tj - What state is that
Stanley - That particular district takes NO spring break, & only about 1.5 wks for Christmas. They run Sept thru Aug with only about 1.5 wks between.
Lynne - Our junior high is finally going to get AC in. Then we could think of going to school year round. I'd love it.
Joyce - Do you like year-round? The way they are going here, they won't be happy until they have that everywhere. Now, just a few places. I could use a spring and fall vacation.
Lynne - I live and sub in PA--the state you've got a friend in.
Stanley - For a sub who wants assignments, it's an IDEAL situation!
Joyce - Lynne, where do you live? Also, we were talking about having two classes in one for music. It stinks. We also have two second-grade classes together. Makes it hard in discipline and to mark down sts. who have played instruments.
Lynne - Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's much easier on the budget.
Stanley - I like yr around, Joyce. There are many different flavors of it here, though.
Lynne - I can imagine that all those students are hard to handle and organize.
Joyce - Stanley, what do you mean, flavors? How do you vary it?
tj - It was nice while it lasted here.
Joyce - Lynne, I thought you were talking to me, 'cause I have a friend in Pa too!
Lynne - I had 34 high school students in a very HOT meteorology class last week. I thought things would get really bad, but I was surprised--they actually settled down and worked!
Stanley - Lynne, The situation Joyce described would be DEATH on a sub! But, few SPED jobs are that way because of the parapros.
Joyce - Yes, they are. A teacher from another school seemed concerned that the aide had that big of a class, but not at all when he saw I had them all! It angered me! They take advantage of me.
Lynne - Yes, sometimes the better you are, the more they take advantage... it's a shame.
Stanley - Joyce, I'm in a yr around now on a leave replacement contract. However, it is only single-tracked, so we're off as of 7/21.
Joyce - Thanks- I hadn't thought of it that way!
tj - It was nice chatting with all of you.
Joyce - What is a leave replaceement- you are filling in for someone on a leave? I took a year off once and it did wonders.
Stanley - Joyce, I also had 4 wks off prior to Easter. So I subbed. Out of 19 possible days I was able to work 18. I was pleased, 'cuz there are NO guarantees in subbing!
Joyce - It WAS nice. I guess I need to get to sleep soon. Good luck.
Stanley - Night, tj! :-)
tj - Night Stanley
tj - Good luck to all of you
Lynne - Well, you have been great to talk to, but my eyes are getting droopy. It's 10:50pm here. Thanks for the chat and the empathy. Joyce, hope all goes well in your classes. You too tj, and you Stanley. I'll try to get you those other logs. wouldn't you know it? The elementary one is lost. I just did the same format, but listed subjects instead of periods, and no absentee line for every subject.
Stanley - Joyce, that's correct for leave replacement. I.e., a contract with an end date.
Joyce - True, Stanley, plus they ask the ones who are available and agree to come. They get tired of calling and being refused.
Joyce - Thanks, Lynne.
Lynne - Bye, for now!
tj - Night Lynne. Good luck
Stanley - But I've bennies, & the pay rate is something like $177/day as opposed to $100-105 for daily subbing! :-)
Lynne - Thanks! 8-) Have a good one, tomorrow! Bye
Joyce - bennies?
Stanley - Joyce, My 4 district all have computerized gatekeepers. However, 3 of the districts are small enough so that they get feedback on the quality of your work. Nevertheless, when districts are testing, the first few days back on track, etc., jobs are HARD t
Stanley - Benefits... medical, dental, sick pay (if necess)
Joyce - Interesting.
Joyce - True.
Joyce - The standard of living is high there, I remember.
Joyce - Do the gatekeepers clock you in?
Stanley - ...HARD to come by. [I.e., sometimes there is virtually nothing available, regardless of your "status" in the assignment hierarchy.]
Stanley - Clock you in?
Joyce - I am trying to understand what you mean by computerized gatekeepers.
Stanley - Yes, re the cost of living! I'm with my 82 yr-old Dad, or I'd have some MAJOR decisions about expenditures!
Stanley - Computers assign the jobs rather than "live" human callers. For subs a "gatekeeper" is the person/thing who assigns us.
Joyce - Oh, here is your answer.
Joyce - I used to get three live calls some days.
Joyce - Would have been weird to hear a machine!
Stanley - I like the computer because it often will assigns us wks ahead. Those tend to be "good" assignments because the T knows in advance that he/she will be out.
Joyce - Hope your dad remains in good health, if he is. My grandmother went into a nursing home this year and it has been hard on my folks. Guess I need to go soon.
Joyce - That is a good point.
Joyce - That way you can plan.
Stanley - Yes, there's no literal gate, so it would be a figure of speech. However, I think the image is an accurate one.
Stanley - Thanks, re my dad! Believe it or not, he'll be going on a field trip with my G-4/5s a wk from today! He's quite a guy!!
Joyce - I had a neat picture in my head! I am sorry, but I did not sleep much at all last night, and I need to get off, so I can get upstairs with the hubby, etc. He may feel replaced with the computer. Enjoyed talking to you. Good night, Stanley.
Stanley - sorry about your grandmo! ;-(
Stanley - Goodnight, & likewise!! :-)
Stanley - <<<poof!!>>>
