Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome to the Substitute Teacher's Meeting!
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome Carol. Are you a sub?
Carol - Yes - I've been subbing for 5 years
Janet/4/AR/host - Carol, are you there?
Janet/4/AR/host - What grades do you usually sub in?
Carol - elementary K-5.
Janet/4/AR/host - I taught 4th grade last year and the private school had to downsize so I am looking for a teaching position now.
Janet/4/AR/host - Are you certified?
Janet/4/AR/host - I subbed for 3 years in K-6! Mostly 1st grade.
Carol - I'm waiting to find out my scores from Sat. test in NY
Carol - I'm waiting to find out my scores from Sat. test in NY
Carol - this is a career change for me
Janet/4/AR/host - How exciting for you!
Janet/4/AR/host - When do you think your scores will be in? H0ow do you feel you did?
Carol - I'm also working on my Masters from the Univ. of New England in Maine.
Carol - It's a great program.
Janet/4/AR/host - Carol, I changed careers also. I was a sec. in a Radiology dept in our local hospital. Now I just do fill in work.
Janet/4/AR/host - WOW Carol, You are sure busy!
Carol - I think I did well. I missed it by 7 points in April
Janet/4/AR/host - I worked full time and went to college full time. It was the hardest thing I have ever done.
Janet/4/AR/host - Those tests were horrible! I did not like them. I am certified in elem. ed./spec. ed./and soc. stds.
Carol - I hear you. I'm glad my kids are older. It makes it easier.
Carol - well I'll be certified in health/pe. but my masters is in elem. ed
karen - hello ladies
karen - i am a student at a private university getting my teaching degree in january.
Carol - hi Karen
Janet/4/AR/host - WElcome Karen to the Sub. Teacher's meeting.
karen - have a question in which i cannot find throughout the internet, and i have been looking for days now.
Carol - NY makes it so hard to be a teacher
karen - ject to define the 6 most common teaching models.
Janet/4/AR/host - Karen, do you sub?
karen - ving an awful time trying to find the definition for the "concept teaching model" and the "presentation model". do you have one in which i can use?
karen - no i am not a sub.
Janet/4/AR/host - Hi Kat! How are ya?
karen - unfortunately or better yet fortunately, i habe 2 children, 3 years and 2 years young.
Kathleen - hello everyone
karen - don't hab the opportunity to find someone to take care of my babies in a new city.
karen - so does anyone have the definition for "concept teching model" or "presentation model"
Janet/4/AR/host - Karen, one way of handling your problem is look up the definition of concept. I would think that presentation would be modeling the concept.
Kathleen - Karen where do you live
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome Quique!
Quique - hi...just on for a minute...i subbed for 1 yr while getting my credential and masters, then taught 5/6 bilingual for a yr...a terrible school...left it to sub again last yr...hunting for a job...
karen - Orlando
Kathleen - i am a sub, i love it
karen - i am anl about strangers taking care of my precious children
Janet/4/AR/host - Kathleen, whatever one needs to ask, contribute, etc about subbing.
Kathleen - hi CG
Janet/4/AR/host - I am a certified teacher, looking for a position. Why?
Quique - subbing was a piece of cake! I miss the creativity of lesson planning...and can't afford to live on sub-wages...
karen - i am needing help on a project for my portfolio in which it goes to my internship
Carol - Hi everyone, I've been subbing for 5 years and have found it enjoyable enough to return to teaching.
Janet/4/AR/host - Karen, oops sent it to the board!
CG - Hi kathleen. Where are you subbing?
karen - I NEED HELP in defining 2 models.
Janet/4/AR/host - karen, I have a portfolio!
Janet/4/AR/host - Karen, I guess I was of no help to you earlier.
karen - anyone want to help a "will be teacher?"
Quique - but for those who can...its great! i love visiting different schools...different levels...getting ideas from different teachers...its an amazing experience
CG - Karen -what are the two models?
Carol - what do you need Karen?
Kathleen - i sub in dallas county, texas
Janet/4/AR/host - GREAT CAROL!!!
Janet/4/AR/host - Welcome CG to the sub teacher's meeting.
Janet/4/AR/host - Kathleen, we are neighbors. I live in Arkansas.
Carol - I'm up here in NY
Quique - I was told by many that subbing would help me get hired here...in competitive southern california...but it hasn't so far...
Kathleen - Really, How are the Schools There?
Janet/4/AR/host - Subbing is alot of FUN I think but I want my own classroom. I am searching.
CG - Carol- I teach in NY also. But I am spending my summer in MN
Quique - Janet...with you on that one...
karen - carol, i am in need to define the "conceopt teaching model" and the "presentation model", any suggestions where to find the definition or can i get a breif thought on your definition of them?
Carol - I'm up near Poughkeepsie
CG - I agree Janet. There is nothing like have a place of your own
Quique - just wondering what they pay subs therre in NY?
Janet/4/AR/host - Quique, what state do you live?
CG - In Long Island it depends on the district but you can get anything from $85-110 a day.
Carol - I get $70 a day but of course deserve a lot more.
Janet/4/AR/host - You will laugh when I tell you what subs get here. $44.00 a day.
CG - How do you make ends meet on $44 a day?
Janet/4/AR/host - WOW CG I wish subs got paid like that here.
Carol - Karen - isn't what you're looking for under the "Teaching for Understanding"
Janet/4/AR/host - CG, I do not sub anymore. Had my own classroom last year but private school downsized so I am searching again.
Carol - Requires "complete" lessons that are carried through to include higher-oder applications of content
Janet/4/AR/host - How many of you are going to sub this next school year?
Kathleen - did any one of you guy get that new desktop Calculator that Calculates and averages grades?
Kathleen - i will be subbing
Janet/4/AR/host - Kathleen, no, do tell us more about it.
Quique - sorry...California here...getting 80-85 per day...San Diego City schools pay $100...but you have plenty of discipline to deal with...so i dont work there.
Carol - me too - but hopefully not for long. I know theres a full-time job just around the corner
1edBubba - uh, I'm also known as Stanley {G}
muffy - Stanley, I knew that was you!
Quique - I will have to do something else besides subbing this yr if I dont get hired by October...
Janet/4/AR/host - If I do not have a teaching position when school starts I may have to sub.
Carol - I only sub in 1 school and I practically work everyday.
muffy - What are we going to talk about?
1edBubba - Quique, City Schools paid $113.97, but there was a raise as of July 1st. You're in San Diego too?? What OTHER districts??
Quique - ...being a male...and chief income earner...lol...means I can't afford to sub again this year...
Janet/4/AR/host - (((((((Stanley)))))))) How are ya?
Quique - I worked mostly in Encinitas and Poway
1edBubba - Quique, are you elementary? Also, WHERE are you applying?
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy, subbing!
Kathleen - bye guys
Janet/4/AR/host - Quique, I understand that one for sure!
muffy - Yes, I'm subbing. At $88 a day!
Quique - elementary...applied to....del mar, solana bch, encinitas, cardiff, carlsbad (2 intvws there), Escondido, Poway, and recently National City!
Carol - I want to let you all know that I just completed my first graduate proposal on "Reaching Out to Elem Students as a Substitute Teacher"
1edBubba - Those are both tough nuts to crack, Quique. Am I remembering correctly, did you attend one of these chats several months ago?
Carol - I found a lot of info on the internet.
Janet/4/AR/host - Carol, there are about 4 elem. schools here and I know I could work everyday but I want my own classroom.
Quique - maybe...its been a while...
Quique - whwere are you, 1ed?
muffy - Sorry to ask a dumb question...I thought maybe we'd have a specific "issue" in regards to subbing.
Carol - I know but I feel when you establish yourself - especially up here you are the first to get a permanent job.
1edBubba - I'm familiar with National... another tough one unless you're bilingual.
Quique - luckily I have my BCLAD and Masters in bilingual ed
Beth - I have a question if anyone can help me?
Jeri - Hi, Janet - I'm currently alternating subbing with an instructional aid position here on Long Island.
muffy - What's your question?
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy, not a dumb question. We just talk about all issues on subbing.
Janet/4/AR/host - Beth, ask away!
1edBubba - muffy, we tend to hit ALL kinds of things with several different conversations @ once. Quique, I'm in City Schools, South Bay, & OCCASIONALLY in Nat'l.
Janet/4/AR/host - This room is acting up.
Janet/4/AR/host - Jeri, are you also a certified teacher?
muffy - Janet:Should we go to detention? LOL
Quique - ok...what do you think of National City? which schools are preferable?
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy. LOL not at all.
Jeri - Janet - yes, I'm certified in high school math, but I've been out there subbing for seven years!
Janet/4/AR/host - Do you as a certified teacher subbing to help get employment a problem?
Quique - 1ed...cool! never thought i'd meet someone local here!
Jeri - where are we all from?
Carol - do schools hire outside your certified subject area?
1edBubba - Quique, most schools are about the same. Harbison has GATE, so therefore higher scores.
Carol - I'm hoping to get an elem. job since my Masters is in Elem. Ed.
Janet/4/AR/host - I find that since there is such a sub. shortage that the subs do not get the vacancies.
Janet/4/AR/host - Carol, I wish you well in your search and studies!
Jeri - I think you must be right. My district LOVES me as a sub and I think would like to keep me there
Carol - wow - in my area in NY the permanent subs are the first hired for full time.
1edBubba - Some feel Kimball & El Toyon have slightly worse behavioral problems. However, still LESS than what you can find in City Schools.
muffy - I don't know who is being hired. I guess I'll find out when school starts again.
Carol - Thanks Janet.
Janet/4/AR/host - Jeri, are you subbing by choice?
Janet/4/AR/host - Carol, I wish it was that way here.
Carol - where are you?
Jeri - I'm subbing because it's a steady paycheck - I would love my own room!
Quique - I taught in chula vista...had the roughest class
1edBubba - Jeri, Quique & I are both in San Diego, though in different districts.
muffy - Carol: I'm looking for a permanent or long-term. I'm counting on that to be by ticket to getting hired.
Janet/4/AR/host - Jeri, same way here unfortunately!
Quique - Jeri...what districts do you work in Jeri?
1edBubba - Quique, what made it rough?
Carol - well just keep telling your principal and the other teachers your long range goals.
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy, that is a good way to getting a position in most areas.
Carol - Muffy - its called SMOOZING
Quique - kids did not know how to behave in school..totally rude and off task..staff in fighting and a divisive new principal=disaster..but I learned a lot!
Jeri - I was working in three Long Island districts I live near, but now my schedule keeps me in the same district where I work as an instructional aide because I'm only available to sub every other day
1edBubba - Jeri, I also fit in that paycheck/own room bag!![]()
muffy - I've got to admit I'm pretty down now. The chatboard has been sorta down, too. We need a pick-me-up!
Carol - Well I just finished taking a High Performing Teacher class. It was very uplifting.
Jeri - I guess it's like that for a lot of us. What's tough is going to school for my masters while I'm not making much money
1edBubba - Quique, that wasn't per chance Feaster-Edison, a charter school?
al-ia - Yeah, it has been ages
muffy - Carol: I'm quickly learning that's the name of the game)
1edBubba - Also, what grade level??
Janet/4/AR/host - Jeri, it is not easy!
Janet/4/AR/host - Al, how have ya been?
Quique - No,it was Harborside...5/6...I have to go now..my son needs help with his summer school homework project....hope to see you again soon..I am a regular in Room 1.....
Carol - There is definetly an ART to being a good sub
Janet/4/AR/host - Night Quique, thanks for comeing! Have a great night.
al-ia - Ok. Working this summer as math teacher at teenage residental facility
muffy - I could probably land a job in a parochial instantly, but I'd really like to land a public for the $ and bennies
Janet/4/AR/host - oops typo (coming)
1edBubba - Quique, I'll remember that! 5/6 late in the year can be PARTICULARLY tough!!
Quique - Bye for now...wish I cold stay longer....
Quique - My resource specialist was my savior!
muffy - By Quique
Janet/4/AR/host - al, How do you like it?
al-ia - Muffy, I would love to land a job even in a parcochial.
Quique - see ya, muffy....stay positive...we have to!
Carol - If there are any subs out there thinking of going for their Masters, The Univ. of New England has a TERRIFIC distance learning program.
muffy - al: have you check with your local archdiocese?
al-ia - Well, I did it last summer, too. And I love it. Cannot get on full time,, but may be opening in the future
1edBubba - muffy, since few are still working, there has been a paucity of posts on the Board -- at least since a certain sub ceased posting... {G}
Jeri - al-ai - I'm with you! Carol - as a matter of fact I'm taking mine on-line right now at Stony Brook U.
Janet/4/AR/host - It is not easy landing a teaching position.
Quique - 1ed...hope to see you again sometime....for local chat!...adios!
muffy - I'm presently working on Masters at Central Michigan University
Carol - this is more video and reading. its really terrific.
al-ia - What masters are you guys getting. Friend is intereste d in special ed.
al-ia - Are these mainly on line classes
Jeri - I'm LA, but with a certificate in educational computing.
muffy - Stanley, I think that's so neat that you get to chat with fellow subs on this board. I have yet to meet someone who even knows of this site.
Carol - This is Masters in Elem. Ed.
muffy - I getting my Masters in Teaching
1edBubba - Around here a Masters is NOT a boon to becoming contracted -- unless it's in 1 of the "hot" fields!
muffy - sorry about my typing...have to get in my chat mode LOL
Carol - UNE deals with video's from Lee Canter, (Cal) and high performing teachers demonstrating strategies, etc. then theres reading in text, workbooks, etc. You are then to go into your classroom and apply techniques.
al-ia - I have tried to get fellow teachers to check out this site and they never do. Then they wonder where I get my good ideas.
Jeri - Educational computing can be taken all on-line, but the courses are harder than in the classroom.
muffy - I'm getting my masters to become recertified. My provisional certificate expired in '94.
1edBubba - muffy, did you catch my post about how Casub & worked next door to one another for 7 wks last June & July??
Carol - school is very time consuming during the summer.
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, what will you be doing this upcome school year?
Jeri - Bubba -I'm finding that out, but I need the master to keep my certification so there's no choice.
1edBubba - It was **SO** funny when we figured it out!!![]()
al-ia - Where is Stanley? I don't see him listed
Carol - time management is of the essence
muffy - Same with me, al. I just feel such a comraderie with this board. It's very easy to feel very isolated in the "field".
Carol - Muffy my certification expired too. Its hard inNY to get recertified.
al-ia - I won't be subbing this coming year. Have taken a full time aide position in Alternative school
Jeri - This has been great - I'll be back - it's nice to talk to other subs. Just as I was writing this I saw yours Muffy - isolated is the word!
Ruff - Hi Gang, everyone having fun?
1edBubba - Janet, I "bid" on perhaps 20 positions. However, historically those don't produce interviews since subs are only called if NO contracted T bids. How about YOU??
Janet/4/AR/host - al, I like the alternative school here.
al-ia - Janet, I see there is a 4 added to your name. Guess that means you have a position.
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, don't know. Hopefully teaching in my own classroom.
1edBubba - Ruff is another San Diegan, though in the VERY northern part of our County.
Jeri - What is bid?
noodles303 - I am a first year teacher in the high school, just wanted to stop by to say that you substitute teachers are a brave lot! thanks
Carol - Muffy - what do you have to do to be recertified?
Ruff - Stanley, where do you teach?
Janet/4/AR/host - Al, I just forgot to omit it. I taught 4th grade last year in a private school that downsized due to money problems.
Ruff - Have you visited the new San Diego Ed site?
al-ia - 1ed, in my district the subs never even get an interview. That is why I opted to go with the full time aide. It seems if you leave the system, they will at least give you an interview
1edBubba - My eye is still somewhat of an issue, Janet. I'll need 1, maybe 2, more operations before I can HOPE to be able to work without my patch.
muffy - I need 10 credit hours, but it has to be applied to some sort of program. It can't be just a random bunch of classes.
Ruff - Good luck on the operations..heal fast!
1edBubba - Janet, my "1edBubba" handle stands for "One Eyed Bubba," what a G-6 boy laughingly called me! {G}
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, I hope your eyes are getting better.
al-ia - Janet, it has been a whole since I was hear last. Guess I did not even know you had gotten a position
Carol - in NY you have to take 2 state tests which are irrelevant to teaching. And the fees you have to pay are ridiculous
1edBubba - Ruff, I'm in City Schools, South Bay, & [rarely] National. What S.D.Ed site do you mean??
muffy - Stanley, do you think having a patch is an issue ?
Janet/4/AR/host - I am in the process of renewing my license. I had to pay for my background check by the state and FBI.
Ruff - I start with Vista Unified School district and then to to Ed Join.
Janet/4/AR/host - What kinds of items do you all take with you when you sub?
Carol - if thats all I had to do I'd be estatic
1edBubba - Ruff, Janet -- THANKS! However, I've worked all but 1 possible day since returning on 2/2/01. It's just I'm not 100% without my left eye!
al-ia - well, have to get some stuff ready for tomorrow, so I will be off.
Ruff - Pick up a bunch of Hathaway shirts to match the patch. I'm dating myself.
Janet/4/AR/host - I am just now getting to feel back to my old self! I was sick with ear, sinus, and throat infection.
Carol - I think it would be easier for me to move
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, I understand what ya mean.
Janet/4/AR/host - Night al!
muffy - Where would you like to move to?
Ruff - Stan, your comments on the chat room have been very good.
muffy - Goodnight, Janet
1edBubba - muffy, IF I get to the interview stage it MIGHT be. However, I'M the only one who is frustrated by the less than TOP notch quality of my work!
Janet/4/AR/host - I hear Las Vegas is in BAD need of teachers.
Carol - anywhere that will just except my bachelors and now my grad credits.
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy, I am not leaving. I was saying night to al/ia.
1edBubba - Ruff, Janet -- If we do this long enough we learn to work with less than "our best stuff" -- when necessary.
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, LOL I bet even with your eye problems you are GREAT!
Carol - well good night everyone - great chatting.
1edBubba - Janet, Vegas, Los Angeles I've also heard...
Ruff - Stanley, the new listings of jobs around San Diego is much better. Take a look.
Janet/4/AR/host - night Carol!
muffy - Good night, Carol. Good luck.
1edBubba - Ruff, to what listings are you referring?
Ruff - The job listing for all of the San Diego districts is presented much better than before.
Janet/4/AR/host - Right now my voice is terrible. Very raspy due to being sick. Coughing was terrible for about a month.
1edBubba - garf, if you're SPED, I take it you already have a contracted position??
Ruff - Where are you from Garf?
1edBubba - Ruff, are you talking about something on the SDCOE web site??
garf/sped/ga2 - I am from Georgia
garf/sped/ga2 - Sorry, got bumped.
Janet/4/AR/host - WB garf!
tocco - I am from Florida
1edBubba - Janet, have you returned to working in the hospital, or are you going to wait until early fall -- IF it is then necessary?
garf/sped/ga2 - Yes, I have a contracted position. I have had a position since April. However, my former employer can't fill my posiition.
Ruff - Try vusd.k12.ca.us and then click employment.
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, I am only filling in at the hospital now.
Ruff - Georgia! great state we have driven through many times. How are the schools?
1edBubba - Ah, Vista, Ruff. I know a Cith Schools sub who signed a contract there. However, I'm with my 83 yr old dad, & that would be a 2 hr commute each day!!
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, when I taught 4th grade last year I went prn(as needed). So they filled my position.
garf/sped/ga2 - depends on how you look at it.
Ruff - Use the Vista site as your portal to Ed Join.
garf/sped/ga2 - The system I am leaving, I did not totally support some of the teachers views on sped
1edBubba - Janet, were it necessary, would you be able to get as many hours as you used to work??
muffy - I'm back...had to get a bowl of ice cream. Would anybody like some?
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, no unfortunately. Maybe with subbing and the hospital I could make enough but I would not have any benefits at all.
Ruff - garf, what do the letters SPED stand for? I'm an oldtimer from the 60's!
1edBubba - Ruff, I'll try that, even though North County things aren't doable for me.
Jillers - I'm sorry....guess I'm in the wrong room!![]()
Janet/4/AR/host - muffy, thanks for sharing.
garf/sped/ga2 - some dont seem to understand that you MUST individualize to meet student needs-- and these are special education teachers.
Jillers - Have a great evening all!
garf/sped/ga2 - sped-- special education
1edBubba - garf, there is HUGE turmoil re SPED in San Diego!!
Ruff - Hello Jillers, where are you from?
Janet/4/AR/host - garf, in the private school I taught at the spec. ed teacher was not even certified in special ed.
Jillers - FL
Jillers - K Teacher
Janet/4/AR/host - Jillers, you can stay if you want.
Ruff - I almost retired to FL but chose San Diego. Less humidity.
tocco - I am a soon-to-be student teacher in east central FL
1edBubba - Janet, no benefits because of your reduced hrs @ the hospital?
Jillers - South FL here
Janet/4/AR/host - Ruff, Arkansas is VERY HUMID!!!
Jillers - anyone here in VA?
muffy - How exciting tocco!
Ruff - No thanks on Arkansas. I love California!
muffy - I'm from Michigan.
tocco - Thanks, muffy. I guess I am here because I am considering subbing following graduation.
Janet/4/AR/host - Stanley, yes, prn employees do not get any benefits. Subs do not get benefits either.
1edBubba - Janet, if you've not been here it is TRULY hard to imagine the paradise in which we live! Of course, that's why our cost of living is so high!!
cathie/NC - Hi everyone!
muffy - tocco, I learned the MOST by subbing.
Jillers - hi cathie
Janet/4/AR/host - Hi cathie, welcome to the sub teacher's meeting.
Jillers - subbing is excellent....helps you get your foot in the door for a job
garf/sped/ga2 - I am talking certified teachers not wanting to individualize . I had one today talk about a particular child that she cannot provide the support he needs, and she is self contained.
cathie/NC - hi Janet
tocco - muffy, I've seen so many different perspectives on that. It really boggles me.
Janet/4/AR/host - Ruff, Arkansas is a beautiful state.
garf/sped/ga2 - What more can you provide beyond self contianed.
tocco - Jillers, some say that's not true in a district with a shortage of subs. They'll want you to stay a sub
1edBubba - tocco, would it be possible for you to sub BEFORE student teaching? I feel that's a **HUGE** help to increasing the quality of your student teaching experience!!
Jillers - I just finished taking the National Board Certification exam
Ruff - Stanley, did I tell you I got an order for my Sub Guide from Perth, Australia. Cost the guy $9.00 for postage!
muffy - Explain, tocco.
garf/sped/ga2 - who is stanley?
Janet/4/AR/host - Tocco, it is that way in Arkansas! Terrible!!!
garf/sped/ga2 - I am interested in the National Board Cert
1edBubba - muffy, **I SECOND YOUR COMMENT ABOUT LEARNING VIA SUBBING**!
Jillers - I recommend it, garf....it is a great experience
Ruff - Janet, I've driven across the country 5 times and yes, it is a beautiful state.
tocco - 1edBubba, no, unfortunately I student teach starting next month. Muffy, on one of the chatboards there is a discussion about that (prob the sub one). Some say you don't learn anything from subbing
garf/sped/ga2 - I would get more money
1edBubba - Ruff, Congratulations! Is that your distance record so far?
cathie/NC - I think subbing is one of the toughest jobs in education. I subbed for awhile and it is tougher than having a position
Janet/4/AR/host - Ruff, I am not very well travelled! LOL
Jillers - and the rewards are good, too (at least they are in FL)
Ruff - Cathie, have you taught full time yet?
cathie/NC - yes, for 20 years
cathie/NC - off and on, I subbed when I was off
Jillers - cathie....what grade(s)?
Janet/4/AR/host - Well it is 10:00 eastern time. Thanks everyone for attending the sub meeting. Hope to see you here again next month.
Jillers - I have been teaching for 13 years
1edBubba - cathie, no offense, but I disagree about subbing being more difficult than contracted work. I mean, we work FAR fewer hrs with FAR fewer responsibilities!
Ruff - Bubba...yup! a distance record. Reminds me when I had my first amateur radio contact down there too.
cathie/NC - primary grades
tocco - goodbye Janet
Jillers - me too cathie
muffy - I need to get in the sub frame of mind as school will be starting in a little over a month.
Jillers - best wishes to all of you
cathie/NC - that's right, but subs go in cold turkey with no planning sometimes
Ruff - cathie...it is different being a sub isn't it? I have a friend who just retired and subbed and it was a shock!
Janet/4/AR/host - Night everyone!
tocco - most subs I've had in my education didn't teach--told us what to do then sat down to read the newspaper.
Ruff - Nite to you Janet, thanks for hosting.
muffy - G'night, Janet...
cathie/NC - in your schools, do the teachers call you to sub or does the principal?
Ruff - We have a computer automated system!
tocco - same in my district, Ruff!
1edBubba - muffy, I'll stop for perhaps a wk @ the end of Aug, & then I usually don't work for about 10 days @ yr's end. And THAT'S enough for me to get rusty! {G}
muffy - if you go into a job and read a paper or book you are asking to being eaten ALIVE!
Ruff - I have teachers call me at home to reserve the days they want.
tocco - and that's exactly what happened in my classes, muffy. There were exceptions, however.
tocco - that is why I am concerned about becoming a sub myself.
Ruff - A good sub seldom sits down and seldom gets called again!
tocco - how do you control a classroom that does not belong to you?
1edBubba - tocco, that newspaper stuff is **SAD**, but I've heard it before...![]()
muffy - Stanley, I already feel rusty!
cathie/NC - tocco, you have to have a bag of tricks of your own to control them, your own discipline ideas
Ruff - hey tocco, I was out of the classroom for 20 years and the first day back as a sub was fantastic. An automatic response and uplifting.
muffy - tocco, I can tell by your concern that you will be a conscientous sub.
Ruff - Muffy, I have read your comments, you are not rusty!
1edBubba - tocco, I bring my own positive incentives system with me. That way I can't screw up what the classroom T does. [Kids **DETEST** an inferior version of "their" T!!]
tocco - I want to perform the job well to help me get a teacher's position, not hurt me! Thanks for your comments
tocco - examples bubba, cathie?
muffy - Hey, has anyone been called to sub on the first day of school?
Ruff - tocco...introduce yourself and let the class see you as a person they are glad to meet.
1edBubba - Ruff, I agree about muffy's comments. However, I think she might be referring to the fact that it doesn't "flow" like it should when you've been inactive for awhile.
1edBubba - muffy, I've been scheduled the 1st day of school 3 of my 5 yrs because of vacancies, overflows, etc.
muffy - tocco..tune into the sub chatboard for a plethora of info!
Ruff - I always tell a short personal story and the students are hooked.e animation
Ruff - Hi Bluette, where are you from?
muffy - Stanely: What do you mean vacancies, overflows? What was it like?
Bluettte - ooppps--I have an extra "t" tonight
Ruff - want a few more...ttttttt
Bluettte - I am in NYState near Syracuse and Ruff, you are one of my heroes!
muffy - Hey, Bluette!
Ruff - Well thank you! What did I do?
Bluettte - just got home from my part time job--in a dept store
1edBubba - Overflows = too many kids, so an unexpected class is started. "Vacancies" = Un-filled positions, usually in SPED or Bilingual here.
Bluettte - Ruff, I like your advice and your style of writing
1edBubba - Blue, this is Stanley, posting under my "joke" name.
Ruff - Thank you, did you order your guide yet?
Bluettte - last year was my first venture into the wonderful world of subbing
Bluettte - hi, Stanley--I would have known you anyway after you started talking
Bluettte - er, um, well, no Ruff....
1edBubba - Blue, my hat goes off to all of you who work another job in ADDITION to subbing!!
muffy - Mine too, Bluette...at least from a 11 years ago.
Bluettte - well, I gotta pay the bills summers, holidays, between semesters
Ruff - That's alright, if you wait till next year it will have 20 more pages. Every one I send has something new.
Ruff - Stan, did you say you take on Spec. Ed ?
tocco - goodnight all! I have procrastinated on a school paper long enough. . .
Bluettte - good for you Ruff! By the way where did your name come from?
muffy - good night tocco: remember about the board!
Ruff - Goodbye, tocco, nice talking.
Ruff - Mine name is a stage name I used when performing as a folksinger.
1edBubba - I'll sub in SPED, Ruff. No desire to go for the credential, however. I mean, WHY do so many SPED credentialed Ts leave it, anyway??
Bluettte - Ruff, I was thinking of Dennis the Menace's dog--a little disappointed!!!
Bluettte - I have been reading the board on the archives
Ruff - Bye cathie..have a fun summer.
1edBubba - Friends, I've a Dr's appt in less than 15 mins [evening here in CA], so I DO have to motor! Take care, all!!
Ruff - So long Stanley...good luck..best wishes and a pat on the back. Thanks.
muffy - Bye, Stanley![]()
Bluettte - goodnight Stanley and good luck at the drs
Ruff - Bluette, glad you have picked up some ideas. Hopefully your next year will be a winner.
1edBubba - ((( poof !! )))
Bluettte - LOVE that Stanley
Ruff - Is he gone, now we can talk!
