Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Bluette - good evening and welcome to the Substute Teacher's Chat
Sunny - Hi Bluette
Bluette - hi Sunny
Bluette - are you Sunny from California??
Sunny - I guess we're the early birds.
Sunny - No, from Mass.
Bluette - Stanley is teaching a class this evening so i said i would start the chat for hi,
Bluette - him
Bluette - hello Nicky
nicky - hello!
Bluette - Are you both substitute teachers?
nicky - how are you?
Sunny - Yes. This may be my 3rd year.
Bluette - doing fine
nicky - um...i'm having my interview for sub.teaching tomorrow.
Bluette - I am starting my 3rd year too
Bluette - are you nervous or have questions Nicky?
Sunny - I never had an interview..just a laid back orientation.
nicky - oh,yeah?
nicky - yes,Bluette,i am little bit nervous..
Sunny - I am going to make some calls tomorrow to see about permanent or 1 year only.
Bluette - I talked to the supt at my home district and suddenly I was getting calls to sub, guess that was the interview!!
nicky - I am really concerned about one thing...
Sunny - It'll probably be laid back, Nicky. I'm sure you'll do fine.
Bluette - in 3 other districts I had more formal interviews
nicky - should our answer be lengthy or just to the point?
Sunny - Bluette how many districts do you sub for?
Bluette - it depends, won't ask you yes or no questions, you are expected to explain or describe with your answers
nicky - because one of my friends told me that you have to talk and answer continuously for 2-3 minutes..
nicky - i know there will be open ended questions...
Sunny - I agree..make sure you are able to answer each question.
Bluette - I have 4 districts, 0 schools, but mainly sub in one district at MS_HS, sometimes other schools and districts
Bluette - 10 schools, must read then send!!
nicky - okk
Bluette - hi Mrs M
Sunny - I'm elementary, I sub 1 district. It keeps me busy!!
nicky - hi Mrs.M
MrsM/PA - Hi,all!
Sunny - Hi Mrs. M
nicky - how long theinterview will take?
Bluette - take a deep breath and think for a moment then try to answer in good grammar and succinctly, don't f
Bluette - don't drone on
Sunny - I really enjoy reading everything you all post on the chat board.
Bluette - 1/2 hr at most., maybe less
nicky - okk
Sunny - My orientation lasted about 1 hour.
nicky - then it's fine...
MrsM/PA - Most peopel have really useful stuff
nicky - Sunny, where are you from?
Bluette - thanks Sunny, haven't been on much this summer, not much school related stuff here, I subbed 3 days of summer school and proctored exams
Sunny - Mass. Too lazy to spell it all out!!
Bluette - is everyone certified to teach??
MrsM/PA - I didn't hink much about it all summer, for a change
MrsM/PA - yup
Sunny - I've checked in every now nad then! Bluette, you're busy!!
Sunny - I am certified in el ed, will be certified for early childhood soon.
nicky - What type of questions can be asked?
nicky - i have one more doubt...
Bluette - hello tati
Sunny - Mostly classroom management things..how will you handle different situations.
Bluette - and Angela welcome
nicky - should i prepare my philosophy of teaching ?
nicky - Hi Angela and tati!
Angela - Sunny, where in Mass are you from? I am from Mass, too
Sunny - You might want to prepare that. It's a popular question.
nicky - okk
Bluette - you may be asked about what you have to offer a class, or why you are interested in teaching, very general questions
tati - hi bluette
MrsM/PA - what are your strengths and weaknesses
Bluette - I am not cert and have had no educ classes, learned my art and science of teaching by doing it
tati - bluette
Angela - I lost my Title I job to budget cuts this year. Looks like I am going to be subbing again! I like it!
nicky - I have recently finished my ABQ course in junior panel.
Bluette - we are in an emergency situation in NYState so I have been allowed to sub, although if a cert teacher was available, that person would be subbing instead
Sunny - Seekonk..will probably be moving back to RI soon.
nicky - what sort of emergency?
Bluette - what does that mean Nicky?
Sunny - Where are you from, Angela?
nicky - Additional Basic Qualification(junior)
Bluette - not enuf subs that are cert and willing to go to certain schools or teach certain subjects
Angela - I live in Pepperell. It's at the New Hampshire border.
nicky - so in NY too, only cert.teachers can do subbing?
Bluette - hello tchatot
Sunny - Where I am, certified teachers usually sub. although they do have emergency cert.
Sunny - I once had to sub in instrumental music. I'm elementary certified and haven't picked up an instrument in years.
Bluette - as of jan 03, I think it will be mandated to have only certified subs
Bluette - or maybe its Jan 04
Sunny - Will you go back to school, Bluette?
MrsM/PA - I play the VCR and CD player!
Sunny - Me, too, Mrs. M
Bluette - yes, trying to take classes this fall for teaching cert
MrsM/PA - Bluette, you seem to know so much
Bluette - thats me too Mrs M but I have taught band and chorus
Bluette - mrs M, being a sub makes one learn a lot about a lot of things
MrsM/PA - I've doen strings, Chorus where fortunately there was a capable student to lead
Sunny - I took viloin, which I could teach, but then there was band! the kids really believed that I knew what I was doing!
Bluette - and I am willing to teach almost anything
Sunny - When you sub, you sure do learn a lot!
MrsM/PA - that's for true, Bluette. They only teach a small fraction of what you need to know at teacher school
Bluette - teachers in music usually assign a movie to watch, Annie, The King and I, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story
Sunny - I'd be scared to teach chorus..I can't sing!
Bluette - I never have to sing or play any instruments, just the VCR
MrsM/PA - tchatot, do you teach tots? (dumb question #1)
MrsM/PA - I sing at church and in big choruses, but now I also teach moms songs for their babies
Sunny - I used to teach tots. It was fun, but exhausting.
Bluette - the younger the children, the more energy it takes to teach them
MrsM/PA - I tend to like the older kids in school. I'm at a daycare the rest of the week though
Bluette - Hs is easy after you have subbed K
Sunny - Yes!!!
MrsM/PA - that's another truth!
Sunny - I like K a lot...I'm hoping to teach that one day. but, I like all grades through grade 6.
MrsM/PA - coralling them, herding them uo
Bluette - I am full of wisdom tonight, LOL
Stanley - Hello, everyone!! 8
Sunny - It is a lot of herding. I was beginning to feel like a shepard!! LOL
Bluette - and here's Stanley!!!
Sunny - Hi Stanley
MrsM/PA - like Magoo says, don't back up!
MrsM/PA - Stan the Man (I assume)
Sunny - I've done that a lot! then I've squished the poor kids.
Stanley - Sunny, talk about wee ones… Today was my first day of a 19 day gig with PRE-SCHOOL!
Bluette - eeek Stanley
Sunny - I feel for you Stanley! I did that for one YEAR!!
Sunny - I liked it, but there is more money in subbing!
Bluette - who knew subbing paid more than another job??
Stanley - Sunny, one year?!? This MAY be a vacant position, I SUSPECT I'm paid less/day for the assignment.
MrsM/PA - pre-school pay really stinks!
Sunny - Believe me, it pays more than child care!
Bluette - what was your class tonight stanley?
Sunny - Yes, one year. I did like it, but as I said $$$$
MrsM/PA - I'm making $7.90 at the day care the next few weeks (a friend is the director). My daughter is starting at $7.50 as a K teacher aide at the local rescue mission-ans she's straight from HS-don't know what aides in public school make any more
Bluette - school in NYState begins after Labor Day
Stanley - I took the job because I would probably have had about half of those 19 days where I would not have worked. [My districts are either just finishing or just starting a school "year." NOT a good time for work, ya' know? ]
Bluette - anyone start subbing ??
Sunny - I made 8.50 an hour for the preschool 1 year position. Full benefits, though, which was good.
MrsM/PA - no yet
MrsM/PA - make that "not"
Bluette - hello kathy
Sunny - Not yet.
Vicki - Not yet....our schools start Aug. 29th, but i don't have any days scheduled yet.
Kathy,SD,CA - Hi everyone
Stanley - Blue, my class was THAT one: It lasted until 4 PM, & I'm in CA…
MrsM/PA - hi Kathy
MrsM/PA - I have no days scheduled yet, either.
Sunny - I'm foolishly hoping for something permanent between now and when school starts.
Bluette - I am going to visit my schools because I can get some assigns for workshop days and new teacher orientation if I ask now
MrsM/PA - My first scheduled day will probably for a new teacher to attend induction-grrr
Bluette - like to get some set up early
Kathy,SD,CA - Stanley, do you know when SD schools start back?
Vicki - I need to go back to my school and grovel for my permanent sub job back this year. I worked for the same principal for 4 years and he is no longer there this year.
Stanley - Kathy, GREETINGS!! Yesterday PM @ 9:00 I picked up a 19 day "child development" gig in City Schools, if ya' can believe THAT!
Bluette - how far do you travel to work?
Kathy,SD,CA - What exactly is that Stanley?
Sunny - I'm going to be calling tomorrow and groveling for perm full time, or a 1 year only.
Vicki - about 2 miles
Bluette - I heard an elem near me has a permanent sub, I did not know that!!
Bluette - that means benefits!!
Stanley - For NON-pre-school, it SHOULD be the 1st Tues in Sept -- unless you happen to get a "vacancy" job @ the start, AND they know about it in time to bring you in before the kids actually start.
Sunny - Benefits are good!
Vicki - We have about 13 in our district (2 at the school I've been working at)
Bluette - haven't had any in a very long time!!
Kathy,SD,CA - I had a feeling that was what it was for...but wasn't sure Stanley.
Vicki - No benefits for me.....they don't consider us "real" employees
Sunny - I pay for my own out of pocket.
Stanley - Kathy, it would be the equivalent of nursery school. They go 12 mos/yr, so that's why the work in Aug.
Bluette - I am strictly per diem
MrsM/PA - what's a benefit?
Kathy,SD,CA - Ugh, couldn't do that one, Stan...taught Pre-K one year and they were too much for me!
Bluette - somedays i have cafe duty ansd study halls, other days I really teach a class
Sunny - I am per diem also, but have taken longer assignments.
Bluette - MS-HS is easier than elem, free periods and stuff like that
Bluette - cert teachers usually get long term jobs
MrsM/PA - I agree, Bluette. Some days it seems like I got paid too much (not Really!)
Bluette - some days I am the pigeon, some days I am the statue!!LOL
Vicki - On the days no teachers are out, I've done about everything under the sun....office duty, playground duty........probably the worst is sitting with a kid all day who hasn't done any work all year and trying to get him caught up so he can attend a special activity.......this would just infuriate me, but I had to do it.
MrsM/PA - I'm going to remember that!
Sunny - I know just what you mean!
Stanley - Kathy, my first assignment ever in City Schools was SH 2 yr olds! So, in the K-5 genre I've pretty much done it all…
Sunny - I hate when I get to a school, and I am just covering meetings. Those days are sooo boring.
Bluette - i am cooperative, fill in for secy or do afterschool detention, don't get paid extra, but secy turns my half days into full day pay
MrsM/PA - I don't like those days either, Sunny
Stanley - Vicki, you're talking about being a site sub?
Kathy,SD,CA - Stanley, I found it funny that I had to have "Special" Certification to teach preschool here in CA. I got certified in GA and my general certification includes Pre-K.
Sunny - I always cooperate, but I complain inside my head!
Vicki - Yes
Bluette - ah the hamster wheel, where you run from class to class!!
Bluette - brb....
Sunny - I always feel like slave labor on "hamster wheel" days. I witnessed 2 teachers fight for me once!
Sunny - I had to stop them and say "Hey, I'm the sub..I' ll be with you at one time, and you another"
Stanley - Kathy, sounds VEEEEEEERY strange to me! If I understood my site's lead T, what I'm doing only "REQUIRES" a 2 yr degree in Child Development!
MrsM/PA - nothing like professionalism, eh, Sunny
MrsM/PA - could very well be true, Stanley
Bluette - in science or math classes, too much is expected of me, I can't really inderstand that stuff
Vicki - Well, must go.....I have to pick up my daughter after her class. It's been fun! bye!
Kathy,SD,CA - I guess I'm not understanding it fully Stanley...I thought for some reason you had to have a special certificate to teach Pre-K here...
MrsM/PA - Head teachers in Pa need to be certified, but not many to do it for the few peanuts they throw at you
Bluette - but in elem I can manage pretty well
MrsM/PA - bluette, in science and amth, I just hope for decent lesson plans or some kids who know what's going on
Sunny - Yes, Mrs M, I surely did witness professionalism at it's best!
Stanley - Kathy, you might want to try phoning City Schools' SAMS system @ about 11:55 AM daily as that is the EARLIEST you can potentially access ADVANCE jobs. [Took me over 4 yrs to figure THAT one out… ]
MrsM/PA - it's not hard to see why kids are the way they are
Sunny - Behavior always follows an example!
Kathy,SD,CA - Now do I have to re-apply or anything to sub again this year for SD? I sent back the form they sent to me in April or May saying I would sub again the following year...wasn't sure if I needed to do anything else.
Stanley - Kathy, I'll have to see what my site says about the special certification - - seeing as how I'm going to BE there a while…
Kathy,SD,CA - Okay.
Bluette - hello BJ
BJ - Hi everyone
Sunny - Hi BJ
MrsM/PA - hi BJ.
Stanley - Kathy, you should be all ready to go - - & sometimes jobs DO start BEFORE the kiddos return!
MrsM/PA - you from around here?
Kathy,SD,CA - Great!
Stanley - BJ, I sub in San Diego. How about you?
BJ - I sub in NJ Stanley
Sunny - What part of NJ?...I used to live there.
Kathy,SD,CA - Well, gotta go! Hubby should be coming home soon...have a nice night!
BJ - Southern NJ
Sunny - Bye Kathy
Stanley - Kathy, & since I'm tied up thru 9/13, you ain't gonna be takin' any of "my" jobs!
Sunny - I lived in central NJ...Monmouth County.
Kathy,SD,CA - Who....Me?...
Kathy,SD,CA - Night!
Stanley - BEST of everything to you, Kathy!
Bluette - time for me to go, good night and good luck everyone!
MrsM/PA - where do you guys get those smileys from?
Sunny - Bye Bluette
MrsM/PA - bye blue!
Stanley - Blue, I enjoyed it!
Stanley - BJ, there are at least SEVERAL Subs form NJ that post on the SubBoard.
BJ - Yes, I know Stanley. I read all the time just never post.
Sunny - I only post occasionally.
BJ - I'm a lurker at heart
Sunny - Did you lose your computer connection, too, Mrs. M?
Stanley - MrsM/PA, for the "emoticons," I believe you need to click on the "?" in the frame to your left.
Sunny - I get intimidated by the people who critcize, so I post occasionally.
MrsM/PA - I sure you have something to add, Sunny. Thanks, Stanley
Stanley - BJ, lurking is OK, but posting is painless - - REALLY!
Sunny - Thanks Mrs. M. I do occasionally have things to add.
Sunny - I often learn from the things you post, Stanley.
BJ - I think I just hate to type <grin>
Sue - What is the topic?
MrsM/PA - 0
Sue - I am hot and tired
MrsM/PA - Hi, Sue, no real topic. You have one for us?
Sunny - Me, too. It's summer heat!
Sue - I worked state fair-no job this year yet
Sue - you all subs?
MrsM/PA - What, state, Sue?
MrsM/PA - yes
Stanley - Sunny, are you concerned about criticism on the SubBoard? IMO things have been tame since early this yr -- at least compared to OTHER T.Net boards…
Sunny - I really got a kick out of the "principal" who said we were casual labor!
Sue - that is way we get treated
MrsM/PA - yes, things did calm down
Sunny - Yes, stanley, things have been tame. I did get chewed out earlier this year about how young children are not deve. ready to work hard.
Stanley - Sue, I sub in San Diego. What about you?
Sue - I worked summer job-ddi not get paid when I had beach trip planned
MrsM/PA - i wonder if the pricipal has trouble getting subs to his/her scholl?
Sunny - I agree, we often do get treated as casual labor. I've noticed it less often as I've subbed more years.
Sue - Lady at Board of Ed said i should not depend on supplemental pay-had wait 2 weeks on iit-around $400
Sue - I have subbed 11 years-had perm. jobs 3 yes and people out of college get jobs because Master's degree
Stanley - Sunny, I'm not as active as I once was. However, I **HAVE** ripped @ people whom I thought threw "low blows" @ other posters.
MrsM/PA - I always get letterd from the Supt. of the district-"Substitutes are a very important part of our education system, blah, blah, blah
Sunny - Where I am, if you have a Master's it hurts you because they have to pay you more.
Sue - they only call when when they can't get their pick
Sunny - I never throw low blows. I'm usually the one with 2 line responses. I'm short but sweet.
MrsM/PA - I try to be respectful, even when I disagree
Sue - bad mood-school starts next week
MrsM/PA - i'm looking forward to the $$$
Sunny - I'm always respectful because that's how i like to be treated.
Stanley - Sunny, were you offended by the "casual labor" comment? Thought it snapped my head back, PERSONALLY I thought it said more about the POSTER than it did about Subs!
MrsM/PA - h is much better than I can make in the summer around here
Sue - I had perm sub job almost all last year-kind -loved it
Sunny - I wasn't offended..just amused. He did make a few good points.
Sue - I am sick having work other jobs make living
MrsM/PA - I'd like to specialize in just one building
Stanley - Sue, in San Diego most with LOTS of "post grad" units experience what you've experienced!
Sunny - Me, too, sue. that's why I'm not really looking forward to the crazy schedule I have for 9 months!
Sue - It is like being on call every day
MrsM/PA - I gotta go, good night all. Have a GREAT year!
Sunny - I hate the call in the morning. I did befriend both sub callers last year, and ended up telling them (nicely) where I'd go.
Stanley - Sunny, I guess I was at least a bit disappointed that our colleagues reacted to the quote the way they did. I mean, our self-esteem should be more "internal" than that, don't ya' think?
Sunny - It saved me the call in the AM, because I'd call the day before if I knew of a teacher calling out.
BJ - I'm going to go too. Night everyone.
Sunny - I agree, Stanley. That's why I didn't post. It was more emotions provoking than anything else.
Sue - I hate when get last minute call and later find teacher told principal weeks in advance and he or he forgot to get a sub til lastr minute
Stanley - NIGHT, BJ!
Sunny - Night BJ
Sunny - I always hate it when I get to the school, and they last minute change me to another school!! UGGH
Sue - I better go eat
Sunny - Bye Sue.
Sue - goodnight
Stanley - Sue/Sunny, USUALLY I'm booked at LEAST by the PM prior. [Having > 200 possible schools helps, I guess… ]
Sunny - I have 20!! I thouhgt that was a lot!
Sue - where at Stsanley?
Sunny - By the way, I'm usually an excellent speller!
Sue - I work 2 counties-rural area
Sunny - I also laughed at the great "correction of spelling" debate!
Stanley - My largest employer is San Diego City Schools, the country's 8th largest distric. Plus, I'm also eligible in 3 OTHER districts…
Sue - my area is not large
Sue - goodnight
Sunny - Mine either. That's ok. I have my hands full.
Sunny - What did you think of the whole "correcting spelling" debate, Stanley?
Stanley - There are "rumors" [including an inference in the local newspaper] that SDCS may give some of us CONTRACTS to sub -- as an attempt to remedy some **CHRONIC** shortages that began to surface this past spring.
Sunny - That might help.
Stanley - It did NOT impress me, Sunny! I almost entered in, but though better of it… Et tu?
Sunny - Wish me luck tomorrow. I'm going to grovel for perm full time, or 1 year only. I'm a little nervous.
Sunny - No, I never entered it. I know how it is to share an idea, type fast, and misspell. Big deal!
Sunny - Yes, but it might help w/ benefits, more "rights"
Sunny - oops..sorry!
Stanley - Exactly -- "Big deal!" What's "perm full time?" A site sub??
Sunny - A classroom teacher. Permanent.
Sunny - I do like subbing, but in a way, I'm tired of it. I hate working 2 jobs. It's mentally /physically exhausting.
Stanley - Sunny, PM me your E-mail, & I'll send you the newspaper article that described the subbing shortages.
Sunny - How do you "PM"??
rmathome - hi
Stanley - Wow -- YOUR **OWN** classroom! Though I probably average about 220 days/yr of subbing, I've **NO** idea how so MANY manage to ALSO hold down **ANOTHER** job!!
rmathome - all teachers out there?
rmathome - has anyone created a site with theNettyProfessor?
Sunny - Time for me to go, but it was nice chatting w/ you Stanley. As I've said, you (and a few others) have wise things to say, and I enjoy seeing that.
Sunny - I'd love to have my own classroom..that's why this subbing thing hurts my heart a little
Stanley - Sunny, see a "Send to…" box to the left of where you're keyboarding your messages? You'll probably see a pull down menu where you can "Send to: Stanley."
Sunny - It's not easy to have another job. It makes me mentally insane by the end of the year!
Stanley - rmath, what's "NettyProfessor?"
Sunny - Thanks for the lesson ! Sometimes I'm a little computer illiterate
Sunny - are you a teacher rmathome?
Stanley - Sunny, hey, I bet you weren't 48 before you had your 1st 'puter, right?
Sunny - ok, now I've got to go. Nice chatting!
Sunny - No. I was about 9. I had one that took cassette tapes!
Stanley - Sunny, when *I* was 9, TVs were "new!" Arrrrrrrrgh…
Sunny - LOL!!
Sunny - Night all!
Stanley - Adios! I'll say a few prayers about your interview!
Sunny - Thanks! i'll need it!
Stanley - Hello, schmoldy! Are you a Sub?
schmoldy - I will be
schmoldy - How long have you been subbing?
Stanley - Where abouts are you? Also, "will be?"
schmoldy - Pa
schmoldy - u?
Stanley - I'll be starting my 7th FULL yr 9/16/02 -- I.e., I average about 220 days of subbing/yr.
schmoldy - wow
Stanley - I'm in San Diego. Do you have a credential? I've heard that jobs are *VERY* scare in PA!
Stanley - Uh, that should be "scarce," not scare -- unless perhaps you're in Philly!
Stanley - San Diego has a glut in most areas. However, up until [at least] recently, those of you from certain states actually had an **ADVANTAGE** over those of us who went thru the CA credentialing process in state!
schmoldy - I have an emergency permit
Stanley - But, aren't there an EXCESS of credentialed Ts in PA? [That's what I was told about 2.5 years ago, at least.]
schmoldy - I hear that there is a shortage, then in the next breath some say there is an excess
Stanley - Are you taking your undergrad classes in education?
schmoldy - I am actually going to get my actual teaching certificate
schmoldy - I am a post-bac student, now getting a certificate to teach, my undergraduate was bio
Stanley - My info came from a gal whom I replaced here in San Diego. [She quit a position for which the site had wanted me, but was overruled by the District!] She had graduated from PA the previous spring.
schmoldy - oh
schmoldy - Well, in all the classes I have taken and people I have talked to say there will be a teacher shortage in the next few years
schmoldy - All the old guys are retiring soon
Stanley - Hi, Pat! So, schmoldy, you're a Science person? That would PROBABLY get you a classroom in much of CA! ;-D
schmoldy - Everyone says that I shouldn't have it too hard looking for a job
Stanley - Pat, **PLEASE** excuse the INCORRECT emoticon!
Pat the Bookworm - Greetings from Southern Illinois. I have moved back to Fairfield after being 10 months in Sparta. I am looking forward to returning to my old school districts. I attended a sub teacher meeting last Monday morning.
Stanley - Are you thinking Middle School or High School? Also, have you been reading T.Net's SubBoard?
Pat the Bookworm - Stanley, I was wondering about that face.
schmoldy - Both
Stanley - Pat, you mean an orientation meeting for Subs? What grades will you do? Also, do you have any previous subbing experience?
Stanley - Pat, uh, it's not hard to hit the wrong keys -- particularly since the combos are different on a Mac! schmoldy, I **LIKE** the fact that you're willing to investigate BOTH MS & HS! [A TRUE scientist, no? ]
Pat the Bookworm - I sub at all levels. I began subbing here in 1993. Yes, it was a 25 minute orientation attended by six subs and one principal
schmoldy - no doubt Stan!
Stanley - Pat, I'm certainly in "larger" districts: San Diego City Schools is the nation's 8th largest! Plus, next year I anticipate being contracted in Los Angeles Unified -- along with something like 36K OTHER Ts!
Stanley - schmoldy, IMO you will be a much, **MUCH** more confident student teacher because of the subbing experience you're about to receive!!
schmoldy - My thoughts exactly
Stanley - schmoldy, I think **LOTS** of reflective educators would agree with us!
Stanley - Pat, do you have aspirations for your "own" classroom? If so, @ what level?
Pat the Bookworm - I have taught in 3 states at the elementary level. I think my future will be in subbing for various reasons. I noticed that most of the new hires in this area were 2002 graduates.
Stanley - Pat, the "recent graduate" preference seems to be more common than not!
Stanley - I subbing colleague is married to a Principal. "Hubby" told me that MANY [most?] site administrators are concerned that Subs have NOT kept up with recent "innovations." Also, that we've lost whatever abilities we once had to plan UNITS of instruction.
Pat the Bookworm - I feel that I fulfill a need as a sub teacher. Plus I like many able to travel in the off season and get the off season rates.
Stanley - Typo alert :: That should be "A subbing colleague…"
Pat the Bookworm - Oops ! I hit some wrong keys there. I meant to say I like being able to travel in the off season.
Stanley - I **TOTALLY** agree about "fufilling a need!" However, if I don't become contracted, my financial "future" is dicey -- at best. [I'm 55, & were I not sharing rent with my dad, I'd be in a WORLD of hurt… :-( ]
Pat the Bookworm - In fact my husband and I are planning a trip for sometime next month.
Pat the Bookworm - I will be 55 in October. Our apartment is rent free because we are managers of a motel.
Stanley - Subbing DOES allow a flexible schedule, does it not?
Pat the Bookworm - Oh yes, that is a great advantage.
Stanley - Ah yes -- we've chatted before, haven't we? [I spent the day with 4 yr olds, so the brain is probably a bit "fried," if you get my gist! ]
Pat the Bookworm - Yes, we have chatted before.
Stanley - Here in San Diego 2 bedroom apts go for around $1100-1200/mo! Uh, that doesn't work too well -- even when one works 220 days or so/year, as I normally do. ;-(
Pat the Bookworm - There is a 2 bedroom house for rent here for $375 per month plus utilities.
Stanley - Ummmmm… you mean utilities are extra? If so, what do those tend to run where you are?
Pat the Bookworm - My utilities are paid by the motel so I am not sure what the current rates are.I do know there is a 300 dollar deposit to connect electricity in the country.
Stanley - What do Subs earn/day there? San Diego County ranges from, I believe, $85 - $120, with $95, $100, & $115 being the 3 modes.
Stanley - Most of my days are @ $115, with a few @ $100 or $95.
Pat the Bookworm - Most districts here pay $ 65 per day.
Stanley - Interesting… so you still have to work fewer days/mo to pay "typical" rents, huh?
Stanley - If I can get >45 yrs of life in San Diego "packed," I anticipate moving to Los Angeles in 6/'03 for my own classroom, eff early July of '03.
Pat the Bookworm - I hope our next move will be to a double wide or a log cabin on my 40 acres.
Stanley - I can't imagine 40 acres! Is it wooded? [In the rainy season which ended 6/30, we had a 150 yr low in rainfall -- but slightly > 3 in!! ]
Pat the Bookworm - Yes, it is wooded with a fully operating oil well. We like to go there to shoot our black powder guns.
Pat the Bookworm - The oil money goes to my mother.
Stanley - Haven't fired a gun since my M-16 in 'Nam. [Thank God, as a Naval Dental Technician, that was **ONLY** on the firing range! ]
Stanley - My late mom hailed from central KS. Some of her cousins had oil on their property. Quite a change from farm income, ya' know?
Pat the Bookworm - My late father used to work in the oil fields.
Stanley - Did you get the 40 acres via your dad's insight?
Pat the Bookworm - Good night Stanley. Actually the 40 acres was part of the family farm. I must go now. Have a good week.
Stanley - Night, Pat! E-mails & research [for my preschool assignment] are calling ME also!
