SubOnTheRun - Hello, is this the meeting for Sub Teachers
1-I'd-Bubba - It is, it is... You're not gonna run off, are ya'??
SubOnTheRun - No.... Been waiting a while for this one. I missed the last one.
1-I'd-Bubba - Greetings... are you a vacationing sub??
vacation lady - sometimes Bubba...even in the class I feel like sometimes I am not there...lol
1-I'd-Bubba - I'm in San Diego, "specializing" in elelementary. How about the rest of you??
vacation lady - I am in Welland, Ontario Canada...Secondary
SubOnTheRun - Vacaville specializing in Elementary too.
muffy - What's new?
1-I'd-Bubba - vl, I had 1 of those days today. It was MS RSP, I only "taught" 2 periods, & the aide did virtually ALL of those! 8-)
vacation lady - Sorry...what is MS and RSP
Magoo - Hey, hey, I remembered this time!!! Who brought the snickerdoodles???
SubOnTheRun - I wish I could have traded you too VLady and Stanley... I had a hard class today
muffy - I thought YOU were bringing them?
Magoo - (((HUGS))) to muffy, are you feeling more included now, dearheart???
SubOnTheRun - Forget the snickerdoodles, who's bringing the fudge
muffy - Oh gosh, you guys, didn't mean to sound so emotional. Could be PMS, sorry Stanley
Magoo - ***muttering to self*** was it my turn to bring treats???
1-I'd-Bubba - MS = Middle School [at least for me], & RSP = Resource Specialist, a Special Ed [SPED] position.
Magoo - Running Sub, how about snickerdoodles with a bite of fudge on the inside............???
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, what made your class today so difficult?
muffy - We had a weird day, only 1/2 day so all the periods had to be condensed to 15 minutes.
vacation lady - Thanks for the terminology definitions Bubba
SubOnTheRun - AWEsome!!!
Magoo - Running sub, where are you? I'm in SE Washington state
vacation lady - I hope you were paid for a full day muffy
SubOnTheRun - They are going off track in a few days and were not in the mood for school.
Magoo - I can't pronounce the name of whoever is purple...........
SubOnTheRun - I'm in Vacaville, CA
muffy - No, I think it was a 1/2 day. Better check on that, thanks.
Tnnisace - are there any foreign language teachers in here?
Magoo - OH, WAIT....'tennis ace'???
vacation lady - YW muffy
Tnnisace - yes...
1-I'd-Bubba - Tnnisace, have you ever tried giving used tennis balls to kids as prizes? It's a HIT with inner city kids!!
vacation lady - oui
Magoo - I'm a sub, I do elem., K-6...........the only foreign lang. I speak these days is fluent Substitute........
Tnnisace - Hmm no i haven't
muffy - vacation lady: What's YW?
Tnnisace - that wasn't my question
vacation lady - Your welcome
SubOnTheRun - Magoo... funny!
Magoo - those little furry green tennis balls are driving teachers nuts where I am...........
vacation lady - what about profanity Magoo
Tnnisace - well, i was wondering if anyone knew any good in class games on verb conjugation?
Magoo - muffy, wherefore art thou???
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, Track changing times are often difficult. What grade were they??
muffy - Tennis balls seem to have a new life as floor protectors on the bottom of chairs around here.
vacation lady - I answered your question Tnn...faites attention
muffy - Magoo, I'm in good old Michigan
Magoo - VL, I don't speak profanity, altho I can say the 'sh' word in Korean............
Tnnisace - Vacation Lady what was that?
Magoo - "Oh, I wish I was in Michigan....down on the farm...."
vacation lady - I am speaking French...hint, hint
SubOnTheRun - 3rd graders. The classroom was a mess and I could tell things were in a state of confusion when I walked in this morning. Three of the kids did not mesh well together and it was obvious within the first five minutes
Tnnisace - Ah...ok can you help me Vacation Lady?
vacation lady - Magoo....I love it. And if you typed it on this screen you wouldn't get bleeped...hehe
Bluette - hello all, are you going to France, Vacation Lady
vacation lady - I could if you were here but the activity I know would take too long to explain in a chat
SubOnTheRun - these same three got in trouble at the last recess over a book I had taken away from one of them and his friend used it as a battering ram on another kids head. I took it away and he told me he was going to sue me to get it back
Tnnisace - I need something fun.
SubOnTheRun - book=magazine
Magoo - BLUE, HOW DO YOU DO???
SubOnTheRun - I told him his mom could come and get it
muffy - Hey Blue!
Bluette - I am having such fun subbing, hs is very different
vacation lady - What I have is a game...it is fun but too complicated to explain to you
vacation lady - sorry
1-I'd-Bubba - Hey, Magoo, while I was shadowing 1 of MS kids today I saw the classroom pause to decide whether or not to explain "feces" to the kids -- she'd read it in a shared reading.
muffy - I'm having a good time in middle school.
Bluette - but i caught my Oct germs, but good, runny nose, scratchy throat etc
Tnnisace - do you know any games that I could apply it to that would be easier ?
vacation lady - it involves folding cardboard a certain way and printing the verb conjugations a certain way
Magoo - sub/run, tell the little twerp you'll get him a dollar, since subs are poor, and he won't get more than that if he sues
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, when I get early "vibes" like that I don my MS personna -- even with little ones!
vacation lady - what grade, what language
SubOnTheRun - LOL - I told him to go ahead
Tnnisace - Its for 8th grade Spanish.
Bluette - I just gloss over the words I would rather not explain when reading ot loud
SubOnTheRun - Some days...... you know the funny part is that I only have these experiences in one of the districts I sub in, the other is okay.
Magoo - one-eye, that's an easy one....you just tell the kids, 'it's a fancy scientific word for poop', and then let them giggle for 3 min.
vacation lady - you could print out each word of many different sentences. Then give one word to each student. They must stand up if they think they can be part of the sentence with their word
Bluette - hardly worked at all, T had 3 block periods, great lesson plans which kept them very busy
SubOnTheRun - The rest of the time I love
Tnnisace - Thats cute.
Magoo - I had an interesting morning............
Bluette - Bubba, glad to see you here
SubOnTheRun - What happened Magoo?
muffy - That happened to me. The word was @#$%. It was in an article about ancient relics. Go figure.
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, so you're growin' little lawyers up there in your part of CA?? Tsk, tsk...
Bluette - so, Magoo, what happened??
Magoo - was scheduled 3 wks ago for a certain room, got called at 8 this morning, told it was canceled..........
vacation lady - does that idea help Tnnisace
Magoo - I thought, NO you don't, went to the P, asked if I could 'float', as I've done that before in such situations.........
vacation lady - I hate when that happens Magoo
Tnnisace - Yes it does Vacation Lady...you rock...merci
SubOnTheRun - Yeah, and thieves, he turned around and stole it back on the way to my Yard Duty. I have to refer him to the principal in the morning
Tnnisace - So are you a French teacher V.Lady?
Magoo - this P is new, said he didn't think he had the authority to authorize that..........
vacation lady - I hate it when 2 people get called for the same job. And if you were called first but the other one shows up first and they take them...that's stinks
vacation lady - yes I am Tnnisace
vacation lady - glad to help
vacation lady - glad to help Tnn
1-I'd-Bubba - Magoo, that's about what she did... &, surprisingly, there were NO snickers. Go figure, huh?? |-o
Magoo - so, I took my ornery self down to the district office...........
Tnnisace - I just went to Quebec this past summer and picked up some French. I loved it there!
Magoo - asked for a few minutes with the ass't super.............
SubOnTheRun - What did you do Magoo?
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, how have things been going for ya'?
Magoo - ***I picked up a French guy once, haha***
vacation lady - that's great Tnnisace...I have some highschool Spanish Tnn but that's it
vacation lady - That doesn't count Magoo
Bluette - busy with subbing and caught some nasty germs someplace along the way
Magoo - Told the ass't super my sad tale........said, subs don't have anything (union, etc.) and it isn't fair to do that to them.........said one day before, okay, but not 20 min. before........
muffy - It's that time of year, me too.
Tnnisace - I really want to learn French better...my best line that i can say is "J suis desolee j'naime parle pas l'frances"
Tnnisace - I don't think i spelled that all right..
Bluette - it never rains but it pours, getting multiple calls for the same day
vacation lady - our subs. are unionized and we can pay into the teacher's pension plan
Magoo - the man looked at me and said, 'This is easily resolved. Get yourself back over to XXX and get to work, I'll call the P"
Tnnisace - Have you ever been to Quebec V.Lady?
muffy - I'm a building sub this year. I work everyday same building. I love it.
Bluette - sniffle, sniffle
SubOnTheRun - Where are you V.Lady?
vacation lady - but our union is not very good so what's the point paying into it
Magoo - ***packing to move to wherever Vacation Lady lives, as it sounds like subs do well there***
1-I'd-Bubba - Sorry to hear about the cold, Blue :-[
vacation lady - yes I have been to Quebec Tnn
Bluette - so, Magoo, did you do a full days work?
vacation lady - Welland, Ontario Canada Sub
Magoo - ...so, I did get a day's work, after all. If I hadn't pursued it, I would be out $80.
vacation lady - we do ok...especially Secondary subs.
Tnnisace - V. Lady have you been to Quebec?
Bluette - yippee, Magoo sinks the Principal
Tnnisace - oh...cool
Magoo - Yes, Blu, they had me working on a huge office project in the morning, then a teacher went home sick at lunch, so I went into his room.
muffy - So they bascially found something for you to do, right?
vacation lady - if we sub for 20 days in a row we get put onto the teacher salary grid
Tnnisace - I stayed at the Chateau Frontenac when I was there...it was beautiful!!!!
SubOnTheRun - us too V.Lady
Bluette - it is like being in a new play everyday and you get the script that morning!
Magoo - I tried hard not to let my Irish temper take over, but I just was really ticked. That is just NOT fair.
vacation lady - Yes, it is beautiful Tnn...too expensive for my pocketbook...lol
Tnnisace - well, my very sweet boyfriend took care of that...we had a great time there
SubOnTheRun - How many of you have emerg. credentials as opposed to preliminary or clear credentials?
Bluette - Magoo, you give us courage to stick by our guns with admins.
vacation lady - and, if we get hired for a minimum of 1 semester we get full benefits
Magoo - I am pushing for getting hired as a bldg sub. Many of the teachers want one, and we just need to convince the district.
Tnnisace - CAN I ASK WHAT EVERYONE TEACHES?
SubOnTheRun - What's a Building Sub?
Bluette - Ruff, hello my friend and advisor
Ruff - Here in Vista, 66° and the sun is setting.
Tnnisace - Just curious.
muffy - Sell the principal on the idea, Magoo. It will save so many headaches and money!
Ruff - Hi Bluette, I'll take your advice anytime!
Bluette - I teach k-12, all subjects at least once
SubOnTheRun - I do elementary K-6
Magoo - sub/run, I don't know what you mean. I have a teaching cert. for both Washington and Idaho, In WA, you have to have an ed degree to sub
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, I'm "clear" -- already renewed once. How about you?
Tnnisace - I do 7th/8th grade Spanish.
Bluette - Ruff, I am blushing
muffy - A building sub is a sub that works in one building, but show for work everyday. It.s one less sub the sec. has to call.
1-I'd-Bubba - Mentor, do you sub? If so, where, & what grades?
Ruff - Here in Vista, we contribute part of Sub pay to retirement fund.
vacation lady - Well, gotta run now...nice chatting...bye
SubOnTheRun - Clear, renewed once, trying to get hired full time as a teacher. I was just curious.
Tnnisace - Thanks for your help V. lady!!!
Magoo - building sub is a sub who works every day, in the same bldg, and if s/he's not needed in a classroom, they 'float', but they get paid for 180 days.
Mentor - Just getting back into subbing after 20 yrs.
SubOnTheRun - Bye V.Lady
Bluette - once a sub is present, most schools have no problems finding something for us to do
Bluette - once I was in P's office reviewing standardized 3rd gr tests for missing answers
Ruff - Bluette..etal you are all doing great on the chat room.
1-I'd-Bubba - Mentor, what'd you do in your "other" life?
muffy - Magoo, I'm not workin 180 days. My stint is up May 24.
Magoo - I'm a 'professional sub'.........have decided to stay a sub.
Bluette - then I monitored 2 students finishing the test
Ruff - Mentor...I went back after 20 yrs. The kids are no different!
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, I hear L.A. is VERY desireous of credentialed elementary Ts. They're coming here to San Diego on Wed to interview.
muffy - I'm looking for full-time. I working on getting recertified. I'm one class away! Hurray!
Magoo - Mentor, whatcha been doin' the past 20 years??? (I am nosey)
SubOnTheRun - You really can work every day. It's amazing.
SubOnTheRun - YEAH Muffy!
Bluette - 20 years sounds like armed robbery, giggle
Ruff - Bluette...that's 99 yrs!
Magoo - Blu, you been hangin' around me too long............you are getting ornery!!
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, do you think we could intimidate kids if we told them we'd just completed 20 yrs in the joint?
SubOnTheRun - So, do you all have any ideas for rewards for little kids K-3 aside from stickers and candy??? 5-6 graders are easy because they love free time and I can bribe them with 15 minutes of free time at the end of the day. The little ones are harder without spending too much money.
Ruff - Question: Is a teacher that has children of their own a better teacher?
Magoo - In Washington state, you have to have a degree in educ (elem. or secondary) to sub. Plus, you must pass a criminal background check, and you must be fingerprinted.
Bluette - I never give sweets to little ones, but it works great on HS during testing or study hall
muffy - Yea, let's tell the kids we used to be in jail. I can see their faces now.
SubOnTheRun - Ruff, my opinion, I think so. I left teaching for 5 years and feel better now that I have been through things with my daughter.
Bluette - Ruff, having kids means you have heard all the cons --no homeowork, Teacher lets us bring toys, etc.
Magoo - Ruff, I don't think so.........not always.........I know a teacher who has not got one drop of nurturing in her at all....and she has 2nd grade......and she doesn't nurture her own kids, either.
RJ - Sub in the run, how about coloring sheets downloaded off of Nick Jr or another kids web site?
1-I'd-Bubba - Runner, I've given out Pokémon coloring sheets which I downloaded from the Net. But candy IS my staple...
muffy - Ruff, I know I'm a better teacher. I have much more compassion.
Ruff - One's daughter will always get-cha!
Magoo - Sub/run, you can make puzzles at puzzlemaker.com
Bluette - gum works for me, small bits, 101 pieces at $ store
Ruff - Magoo...is she a good, I mean a really good teacher?
SubOnTheRun - I have given a lot of sheets but I am going to kill my printer (esp. at 60 sheets a day - 5 days a week)
Bluette - but I don't give it out til I know kids well, not at start of year
Magoo - Stanley, if you make that statement on the Sub board, TPOV will smack you!!
muffy - Runner: Use the copier at school.
Ruff - Bluette...would you believe I get fantastic response just putting a big red star with an overhead pen on their anwer sheet!
Bluette - Sub, make one, run the rest off at school--heck you are using them for their students
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, SOMEWHERE I read of a Sub who warned the kids not to worry unduly if he "lost it" since he had a plate in his head from Nam!
Magoo - Sub, make just one copy on your printer, then use the school copier---I've done that for years, nobody minds at all
SubOnTheRun - It only works great if the copy machine doesn't require a number (most do)
Magoo - Ruff, no, this person is not a good teacher. Very organized, but very mechanical.
SubOnTheRun - Each teacher is designated a "copy count" out here and they have a code they have to enter.
RJ - What's your best advice for someone who is jusy beginning to sub?
muffy - I'd give out candy, but it isn't allowed in our school. However, I have seen teachers "stashes" here and there.
1-I'd-Bubba - Magoo... don't you know I LIKE being smacked!
Magoo - Sub/run, use the # of the teacher you are subbing for. Should be okay.
Bluette - one T had a star inker and I starred each kids paper when they completed it, one little guy got a whole row because he worked so hard on it
Ruff - Magoo, too bad she probably has tenure now too!
SubOnTheRun - RJ, don't lose your temper.... patience is a virtue
Patrick - Who knows anything about the reading process?
Mentor - haven't ya'll noticed suger hypes the kids?
SubOnTheRun - I do Patrick, used to teach 1st grade
SubOnTheRun - which part of the process?
muffy - RJ, determine your classroom management per grade.
Bluette - kids always behave worse after lunch, must be something in the food
Ruff - RJ..Get there early survey the lessons and room and let the kids in. Intro yourself and the lessons.
SubOnTheRun - Also, RJ, sit down with the kids before starting each class and introduce yourself and your policies
muffy - Yea, they are either hyped up or sleepy.
Bluette - I have been subbing almost every day after the first week of school
1-I'd-Bubba - RJ, in simple words, ENJOY the kids while being firm, fair, & friendly, as I believe "laurap" puts it! :-$
Bluette - trying to keep myself at one dist. that pays well and is close to home, but still do the others too
Ruff - 20 years ago the hyperkid just needed more control and direction. Not drugs.
SubOnTheRun - OH,,,, always leave the teacher a note too, RJ
1-I'd-Bubba - Mentor, I **ONLY** give out candy as part of my raffle @ day's end! :-*
Mentor - I've made a form to leave for tchr checklist and comments
Ruff - RJ..check into the Substitute Teacher's chat room. Lots of good educators will help.
Bluette - did the events of 9-11 affect your classes?
Mentor - Bubba - sure send them home and let mom peal them from the ceiling!
SubOnTheRun - Is there a chatroom specifically for subs Ruff?
muffy - Yea, I could tell it affected my kids. My own daughter had a really hard time.
SubOnTheRun - I sub for Travis Unified School district on Trav Air Force Base, the kids are living the Sept 11 events
Magoo - Son just came over, needs to use this machine, so I will say good night to all of you brave people (subs are brave), and hope you all get called a whole bunch these next 4 weeks.
Ruff - subonthe run...teacher.net/chatrooms/
Bluette - kids at one dist Elem didn't participate in the saying of the pledge at 2 pm because it would have been confusing and then they get on the buses with no explanation
Mentor - Bubba - peel, sorry.
SubOnTheRun - Bye Magoo!!!
muffy - Bye, Magoo
Ruff - By Magoo...keep up the good work.
RJ - Thank you for the advice ... I can use all the help I can get!
Ruff - I got a new keyboard and it doesn't spell as well as the old one!
Bluette - had lots of good discussion with older children
SubOnTheRun - Helicopters and jets went over a few times today and the kids started asking what would happen if a plane crashed into our classroom. I told them that I would do my best to get them all to safety.
muffy - I work in a really diverse school. Principal laid down the law about not tolerating any finger pointing, etc..
Bluette - great answer, Sub, i think it is what the schools recommend we say
patrick - Any one I would like help on the reading process
1-I'd-Bubba - Mentor, I feel Subs should try to make the day special for the kids. Moreover, I'm not so sure the so-called "sugar high" isn't overrated.
Ruff - SubOnTheRun...I went over emergency proceedures with my classes today as they are calling for a surprise event this week.
Mentor - Working with kids? Check out Michael Meade and Mosaic. Can I give website?
muffy - Runner, I notice kids asking about planes flying overhead...why is it so loud?...isn't it kind of low? They are shellshocked.
Bluette - I try to give each class something of "me"
SubOnTheRun - Would you please Mentor?
1-I'd-Bubba - How do you do that, Blue?
SubOnTheRun - Patrick are you there?
Bluette - it is paying off too, they remember me and say cute things like, you are the sub who sand the funny song
Mentor - www.mosaicvoices.org
Bluette - sang, sang,
patrick - yes
1-I'd-Bubba - Mentor, are you referring to "Mosaic of Thought?"
Ruff - Bluette...you must have read my guide! It is the only way to go.
patrick - hello, sub
Bluette - I tell jokes, give small puzzles for them to solve, tell a story
SubOnTheRun - What I told the kids is that the Air Force is patrolling our area very carefully and that I will get them to safety.
Mentor - singing and storytelling and discussions from each
patrick - I need to make some overheads on some aspect of the reading process
Mentor - Bubba - No.
Bluette - we paly biographies, I tell them about me and ask them to stand and tell class something about themselves
patrick - These overheads are for parents
Bluette - play, play play--my keyboard wont spell either
SubOnTheRun - Emergent Reading, ??? or some other aspect???
1-I'd-Bubba - patrick, what kind of overheads did you have in mind?
Bluette - a lot of my tricks were learned from the sub board
Ruff - Bluette...you are pushing the envelope to ask them to stand and tell if you are their sub.
Mentor - Bluette - also great to have the pair off and introduct "new" friend and tell something about each other.
SubOnTheRun - Spider on the Floor is very popular this time of year
patrick - I need five. I did two so far on things like questions for cues to ask children.
muffy - What's Spider on the Floor?
Bluette - one boy has a three legged dog, one has a fire truck in his yard, one has an entire menagerie of pets
1-I'd-Bubba - Spider on the Floor???
Bluette - one has a 15 y.o. pregnant sister
patrick - emergent etc. Is good I can use that.
Ruff - Teacher's seating chart included the hobbies of kids under name. A great idea!
SubOnTheRun - Raffi song... There a spider on the floor on the floor, and so on. The spider ends up crawling to the leg, stomach, neck, face and head and then it jumps off.
muffy - 15 y/o pregnant sister...oh my!
SubOnTheRun - Good sponge activity song
Bluette - yes, living on the reservation, common there, mom raises it, kid continues not doing school work, I met the sister
SubOnTheRun - Emergent readers recognize letter as having meaning, but aren't quite reading yet
1-I'd-Bubba - Thanks, Runner!I'll look for it the next time I run across a Raffi tape!
Bluette - in after school suspension room
Bluette - sigh
Ruff - Bluette...where do you sub?
Bluette - NYState, 4 districts, each quite different
patrick - I can do the different levels of reading. What do parents want to know about the reading process.
Bluette - one has immigrant Ukranian students, one has a totally Native Amer elem school
SubOnTheRun - they want to know what to look for at each stage. They want to know how to encourage their kids.
Bluette - one pays little and always gives 1/2 days grrrr
Ruff - Everything is different in NY. Have brother is college prof. and sister in upstate as nurse.
Bluette - where Ruff
muffy - I subbed in the ESL room, one kid from Iraq, one from Bulgaria, one from Mexico, 3 from China, one from Peru, three from Albania
Bluette - state has funny regs, micro manages
Ruff - Brother at Cornell and sister in Minerva, NY
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, what % of the school is Ukranian Ss? Do they value Ed in their society here? Also, are there books in their homes?
patrick - Ok, is the stage of writing part of the reading process?
Bluette - oh, Muffy, did anyone speak English? Do kids of diff. nationalities stick together or mingle with rest of population?
muffy - A few of the kids spoke English. Some with no English at all...and they were supposed to take a TEST!
Bluette - Bubba, I just don't know much about them, dads work in factories in the town, kids are usually serious about school, have their own churches
Ruff - So long for now...been fun.
SubOnTheRun - http://www.underdown.org/early_rd.htm - an article on Emergent readers for Patrick
Bluette - bye Ruff
muffy - I've noticed the kids mingling with the other kids. Everyone seems to be pretty accepting of everyone which is good.
SubOnTheRun - Well, guys, it has been fun and I need to go. My friend is IM'ing me
Bluette - this chat is always fun for me
1-I'd-Bubba - Do any of you ever teach classes with Somaliis? I'd be interested in your opinions if you do...
Bluette - I wonder what we will talk about now, any gossip?
muffy - I haven't had any experience with Somaliis. That's in Africa, right?
Bluette - I work in a dept store p/t with a Pakistani, an Ethiopian, several Indians, a Russian
Bluette - we had one lady in a head scarf, Palestinian maybe/
muffy - yea, we've got quite a few Russians and very large Chaldean population
Bluette - immigrnts always facinate me, knew Hungarian rufugees when I was in elem school
1-I'd-Bubba - Yes, eastern Africa, muffy. The boys commonly seem to have **very** poor impulse control.
muffy - I'm amazed at how some of these kids pick up the language.
Bluette - and my parents came to the US without knowing any English, from France and someplace near Ukraine
muffy - What do you mean? Like blurting out and stuff?
1-I'd-Bubba - muffy, next to the Detroait area, San Diego has the second highest Chaldean population in the U.S. However, most are clustered in an area in which I now seldomly work.
Bluette - hadf a boy from Ukraine acting up in study hall last week, went out the window, then gave me some other boys name instead of his
Bluette - are Chaldeans Zoarastrians?
muffy - I've got to admit I'm learning a lot from these kids.
1-I'd-Bubba - muffy, Yes, they'll blurt out -- plus do just about anything that comes to mind!Thank God virtually all of what I've seen has been playful, however.
muffy - Chaldeans are Catholic Arabs, I believe from Iraq...
Bluette - I live in a very "white bread" community so i really enjoy the diversity
1-I'd-Bubba - To me there's at least a significant amount of hyperactivity in typical male Somalii behavior, though it IS different...
muffy - I learned that discipline is a little different when dealing with Chaldean boys.
1-I'd-Bubba - My understanding is the same as yours re the Chaldeans, muffy.
Bluette - what do you do to communicate to your students Muffy?
muffy - Boys are highly revered and mothers rarely reprimand. Get the father in the picture and you get action.
muffy - Since I'm in a middle school most of the kids with limited English go to the ESL room
1-I'd-Bubba - That's a similar societal set-up as to what the Somaliis have, muffy.
muffy - Like today, which was my first time in that room, I just "winged" it.
Bluette - lots of ESL ans sp ed teachers needed in our schools, kids need small groups, more attention
muffy - I can't imagine a teacher who can know that many different languages. She's got her work cut out.
1-I'd-Bubba - I speak reasonable Spanish, so that's what I TEND to get here in San Diego when I work with L2 English kids. However, I've also done a fair amount with Vietnamese & Hmong children.
1-I'd-Bubba - muffy, if ESL Ts know ANY of the languages it is purely accidental.
muffy - Stan, if you lived here that would be your ticket to a contracted position.
Bluette - this is a lot like the early 20th century when America was a country of immigrants from all over the world
Bluette - so was canada, but alot of their pop. came from English speaking countries
muffy - Haven't been able to figure if they are refugees or just job transplants. We also have a lot of Japanese, who are wonderful students. So respectful.
1-I'd-Bubba - muffy, it's no different in SoCA either. However, I'd make a 3rd rate Bilingual T, & that's unacceptable to me...
Bluette - Univ nearby so we get a lot of foreign students, profs, families, now lots of fam. with adopted Asian children
muffy - But you know, most of what you needs to know is on the job, Stan. Go for it. You can always switch later.
Bluette - my sister is tri-lingual, Engl, Fr, Span, but she doesn't teach
muffy - Anyone who speaks more than their native tongue has my undying respect.
Bluette - moi aussi
1-I'd-Bubba - Just before the chat opened I picked up a job tomorrow subbing for a Bilingual Intern with whom I worked last yr -- when he was an aide. I **REALLY** appreciated Clay last yr, so tomorrow will be a treat!!
Bluette - most of us can't handle English ;0
muffy - BTW Stan, what's this research you are doing...?
Bluette - yes Stan, tell all, inquiring minds want to know
1-I'd-Bubba - muffy, Instead I'm "hyping" my Spanish skills to work with transitioning/-ed kids in barrio schools.
Bluette - time for me to say g'night
1-I'd-Bubba - Well, I'm, in essence, "auditing" a Reading course for a friend who's in a big time bind. Cost me nothing but lots, **LOTS** of work, & I get to grow professionally!
muffy - So are you doing this after school. You're not giving up sub dates are you?
1-I'd-Bubba - Arrrrrgh... excuse THAT emoticon!![The symbols are different for Macs, I guess... :-( ]
muffy - Are you on a MAC?
1-I'd-Bubba - On weekends, muffy. It's correspondence, so HOPEFULLY I'll be able to get thru it all...
1-I'd-Bubba - Yes...Mac head all the way...
muffy - I'm a Mac fan. Always have been! See I new there was something about you!
muffy - Anything to keep Bill Gates from getting any richer. I'm a "hippie" at heart.
1-I'd-Bubba - Ah yes... Bill Gates :-*
1-I'd-Bubba - grrrr... different emoticon?
muffy - Well Stan, I have to go nighty-night. I get up at 5:00 AM
1-I'd-Bubba - No, THIS one!
muffy - BTW, did I ever tell you my dad's name is Stanley. His friends call him "Stosh". He's very Polish. Looks like the Pope.
1-I'd-Bubba - Good Night! I've still got a library trip to make, though it IS only 7:30 here!
muffy - Night, Stan!
