1-I'd-Bubba - My real name's Stanley, but since a kid once called me this...![]()
daisy - I am a sub
daisy - are you the Stanley on the chatboard?
1-I'd-Bubba - Where do you sub, & how long have you been at it? [I'm in San Diego with about 1,000 days of experience.]
daisy - I sub in Chowchilla CA and I have subbed about 50 days maybe
1-I'd-Bubba - daisy, Yup, 1 & the same, though some other commitments will keep me from posting much until early 2002.
1-I'd-Bubba - Chowchilla? Where on earth...???
daisy - ok I do not post much but I read everyday
daisy - It is about 60 miles north of Fresno
daisy - oops maybe 40
1-I'd-Bubba - I've spent 45 yrs in San Diego, so don't know much about the Central Valley.![]()
daisy - That is ok I do not know much about Southern Calif
Magoo - Good evening, everybody!!! I have brung snickerdoodles and hot chocolate, so belly up to the table and help yourself!!![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - One loses track rapidly, daisy! {G} I had to renew my credential this past June, so that's how I know...
daisy - hi Magoo I finally get to sort of meet you.
Magoo - Chowchilla??? Isn't that where that nut buried a bus load of kids years ago???
Honey - My 1st time in this chat.
daisy - yes Magoo. I did not live in this area at that time
Magoo - daisy, howdy-do??? where do you sub?? I'm in SE Washington state........1 mile from the Idaho line.
1-I'd-Bubba - Got my mouth full of Power Bars, Magoo, but mil gracias ademas! 8-)
daisy - mine to Honey
Magoo - the kids and driver all got out okay, if memory serves............
daisy - I sub in Chowchilla Magoo
daisy - yes Magoo
Magoo - One-eye, how goes the quest for 'perfect vision' ???![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - Welcome, Honey! The format sometimes takes a bit of getting used to... :-/
Magoo - daisy, did the cops ever do anything with that nut that buried the bus?? prison or anything??
Magoo - Hi to Honey and Mr. Egg..............what a combo
daisy - I do not know. I was not in this area at that time
1-I'd-Bubba - Up in the air right now, Magoo. They want to deal with my cataract on 12/18, but tomorrow I'm going to reschedule for Jan (less time missed that way.)
paul-dfw-tx - greetings everybody
Magoo - and he-e-e-e-e-er's Paul!!!![]()
Magoo - so, 1-eye, are you still 'patched' ???
1-I'd-Bubba - Magoo, can you imagine what some wise _ss high schoolers would do with "Honey" & "Egg?"![]()
Magoo - honey and eggs..........reminds me of that silly poem............I eat my peas with honey, I've done this all my life. They taste a little funny, but they sure stay on the knife!!
MREgg - Honey & Eggs, I don't know, could be good.
Magoo - 1-eye, I'd rather not speculate on that one!!
MREgg - I used to work with someone who grew up with the guys who pulled off the Chowchilla caper.
Magoo - I like honey on Eng. muffins..........***drooling and slobbering***
Magoo - Ruff, howdy-do??
1-I'd-Bubba - Yup, still patching. But, we should be "kind" to the newbies here -- they might not realize JUST how nuts we are! [Dang, is that more food?]
paul-dfw-tx - well is everybody taking off this week or working?
daisy - working
Magoo - Okay, roll call...........where do you all work??? I'm in SE Washington state.
Ruff - I'm taking this week off..hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving.
daisy - central CA
Ruff - I'm in Vista, Ca
paul-dfw-tx - Dallas ft worth
MREgg - Working, I'm on MS long term until Feb.
MREgg - I'm in San Jose, CA
paul-dfw-tx - a lot of school districts around here are off all week or just going Mon. and Tue.
1-I'd-Bubba - OK, Huevo -- What's the Chowchilla caper? Sounds vaguely familiar, by my 54 yr old brain is stutterin' right now!![]()
Magoo - AHA!!!! Now we know what the 'dfw' in paul's sign-on stands for!!
Ruff - MRegg...how can you afford to live in San Jose?
Magoo - 1-eye, you remember the buried bus deal in Chowchilla years ago??
Magoo - "Do you know the way to San Jose...?"
1-I'd-Bubba - MS, Egg? Long time?? OMG!!!![]()
Magoo - "Big D, little A, double L-A....."
Magoo - sorry, Ruff, no songs for Vista.............
paul-dfw-tx - magoo..for me I am more a ft worth guy and don't go to Dallas unless I have to
MREgg - About 25 years ago a couple guys in their young twenties high jacked a school bus full of kids, buried the bus in a quarry and held out for ransom. Kids and driver got free and culprits went to prison. Life terms if I remember right.
1-I'd-Bubba - Buried bus... it's comin' back. "Help Me Rhonda" (since we in a song mood...)![]()
Magoo - Okay, who is new to subbing just this year??? C'mon, fess up............
daisy - I subbed about 20 days last year
daisy - I guess I am sort of new this year
paul-dfw-tx - magoo the kids are the same...
1-I'd-Bubba - Hey, Magoo, Vista USED to be in the "sticks!" Greetings, Ruff!!![]()
MREgg - Ruff, wifey has a good job. Also I'm a recovering lawyer and can still pickup a little legal work to help out.
Magoo - okay, if Vista used to be in the sticks, then we could sing........."Down in the boondocks............"
Magoo - WHO LET A LAWYER IN HERE ???!!!???
paul-dfw-tx - went through interview process over the last two weeks, went to three interviews and was left by the side of the road when they picked someone else
Ruff - Good for you! How about the typical teacher? Can they afford to live there?
Magoo - Paul, if you are on the side of the road, you are in good company![]()
Magoo - Egg-dude, what kind of lawyer are/were you??
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, a VERY good Sub friend here is a retired JAG. Hey, do ya' ever tell those MS'ers you might sue 'em?![]()
paul-dfw-tx - I feel like what does one have to do to get foot indoor
daisy - that is terrible paul I am in the process of getting a contract. I am told I have the job, but they still have not given me any papers to sign.
MREgg - Long term subbing has its pluses, but I figure that I actually earn a lot less per hour of work than day-to-day.
daisy - I have a key to the room that is there for me.
1-I'd-Bubba - Paul, ya' have a credential? If so, what in? [There's a method to my questions...]![]()
Magoo - So, Mr. Egg and Paul, you want your own room, then??
MREgg - Pretty expensive around here. A starter home (1200 sf 3/2) runs at least 400k. New teacher starts around 36k.
paul-dfw-tx - daisy had one like that in Aug...went for interview day before school started...I am working elsewhere...had to give notice...principal stated that I was most qualified candidate but admin vetoed me because I could not start next day
paul-dfw-tx - magoo of course
1-I'd-Bubba - daisy, so the contract would start this yr? If so, what grade? Also, would it be leave replacement -- i.e., ENDING this yr??
Magoo - Okay, I will admit to ignorance here....what is '1200 sf 3/2'?????
daisy - it is a 3/5 position. It is a pull-out program for reading and math
Ruff - MRegg...wow! My old home up in Novato is on the market now for $498,000. In 1970 I paid $30,000.!!
daisy - grades 3-5
MREgg - I've never threatened to sue the MSer, however I do let high maintenance moms know that there is JD at the end of my name. Litigious people leave me alone.
Magoo - Paul, I used to want my own room, but have decided to remain a Professional Sub........this is my 8th year.
MREgg - 12oo square feet three bedrooms two baths
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, ya' got THAT right about long terms bein' a steal -- for the DISTRICTS!!![]()
Ruff - Magoo...1200 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths.
Magoo - daisy, would you stay in the same building, then, and just go room to room??
paul-dfw-tx - magoo maybe so but I need the benefits and retirement program
paul-dfw-tx - subs don't qualify for that
MREgg - I'm happy as a professional sub, but open to full time as well.
Magoo - ***feeling foolish 'cuz didn't know that***
daisy - I would stay in the same building and the students would come to my room. Groups of 6, 40 minutes each group
1-I'd-Bubba - Daisy, please explain the grade lash up. Also, Paul, you've a credential?
Magoo - Paul, you are right about that. I have ins. thru my hubby, but it won't last forever. BUT.....my age (58) is really against me around here.....I've done interviews, but they hire the young ones.
paul-dfw-tx - bubba...yep certified..and ready to go...called social studies composite...history, government, geography, economics
daisy - I would get the students who do not qualify for rsp or are in the process of being placed. The school has grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th
Magoo - daisy, that would be super!! I like the pull-out system, myself. Fewer distractions than if you go to the classroom.
1-I'd-Bubba - daisy, are those at risk Ss? Also, how would they evaluate what you do? [Sound almost like a RSP program, to me!]![]()
MREgg - My brother just bought a house in Aptos last year for 400, he's moving to North Carolina and the house is going on the market for 600k. They'll get it too.
daisy - I get the ones that fall through the cracks
paul-dfw-tx - magoo I am 10 yrs younger than you
Magoo - daisy, my fav grade is 4th........and 5th's are usually okay till after spring break....then the hormones kick in and you're sunk!!![]()
daisy - I am not sure how they are going to evaluate me. It is a new position they are trying out
1-I'd-Bubba - paul, I'm next to positive Los Angeles Unified would be interested! [They've **WAY** too many classroom Ts with NO credential whatsoever...]
Magoo - ah, Paul, but you're a GUY....that counts for a lot........![]()
daisy - My favorite is 4th also.
paul-dfw-tx - magoo if I had it to do all over would have gone into elementary
Magoo - How in the world could anybody afford a house that cost $600,000, w/o knocking over a bank???
Ruff - I enjoy substituting but I could never make enough to live on. Subs should be paid a lot more don't you think?
Magoo - Paul, you still could, you're just a KIDYou wouldn't have to take all the garbage over again, either. I don't think.
paul-dfw-tx - bubba too far to commute...
1-I'd-Bubba - daisy, so no "guarantees" beyond this yr. However, you'd have benefits higher income! Is your District a small one? [San Diego City Schools is #8 in the nation!]
Magoo - Ruff, I couldn't live on sub pay, that's for sure. Hubby and I between us make about 35-40,000 a year..........that isn't much these days.
paul-dfw-tx - I have two retired and widow mom's to think about cannot really leave this area (mine and my wifes)
daisy - yes the district is small and the principal told me that he knows of at least 2 openings next year. He knows I want my own classroom. They are doing this position because they like me and do not want me to look elsewhere
Magoo - Subs should be paid a LOT more, AND, I think, they should also be paid according to how long they've subbed, and how often they work. I get grumpy thinking that some young thing fresh from college is getting the same pitiful check I am, and I have years of experience.
paul-dfw-tx - magoo my certificate is current I could accept a position in any school at this point..and not have to take any course work
Ruff - Magoo...that's not enough for many places in Ca.
MREgg - High tech pays big and squeezes everyone else out of the market. The city of San Jose will loan teachers up to 40k to buy a home at 0 interest for 30 years.
Magoo - ah, daisy, bask in the glow of being wanted!!!![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - Paul, I'm no fan of L.A. However, @ age 54 for the chance to more than DOUBLE my income... [hey, even *I* can connect THOSE dots!![]()
daisy - yea but I am very nervous about it. Times change quickly
Ruff - MRegg...glad to hear the teachers are getting some assistance. Similar down here in SD too.
paul-dfw-tx - bubba you are like me it would be a big jump in pay if I could find position
MREgg - 35k for a family of four in San Jose is below poverty line.
Magoo - Paul, if you are wishing you'd gone for elem., then couldn't you Just Do It??? ***can't believe I just quoted a sneaker ad***
1-I'd-Bubba - daisy, for what it's worth, I'll be prayin' for ya!![]()
daisy - oh thanks that is nice
paul-dfw-tx - I have looked into it...would have to take about 45 hours and student teach again
Magoo - Howdy-do, Mrs.M from Pennsylvania![]()
MREgg - Subs aren't included at this time in the loan program. I'm nagging my councilwoman to fix this. She agrees that it needs to given to subs too.
MrsM/PA - Greetings-it'll be different talking in*real time*
Ruff - An under 65 person has a problem with getting inexpensive health insurance.
1-I'd-Bubba - paul, L.A. is getting quite desperate! [I've heard from 2 different sources they're getting hit by the Feds for **SO** many emergency credentials...]
Magoo - Paul.....you gots to do what YOU like, or you will be miserable and get ulcers. You got lotsa time, yet........could you get those 45 hrs. going full-time or would you need to work also??
Magoo - Mrs. M, whatcha mean 'real time' ???
paul-dfw-tx - magoo have to work...still have kids at home or will start college in 2003
Ruff - Hi to MrsM/PA...what's your specialty?
MrsM/PA - instead of reading what someone wrote earlier today or yesterday or last week like on the chatboard
paul-dfw-tx - magoo I could do elementary but would prefer not too
MrsM/PA - I'm el. ed.
1-I'd-Bubba - Paul, I COULD be mistaken, but I believe a friend from San Diego has her own L.A. G-5 classroom using a Single Subj credential!![]()
MrsM/PA - I'm el. Ed. certified
Magoo - Paul, so, maybe you could take one-two classes at a time??
MrsM/PA - me either
Magoo - Oh, then I misunderstood you, Paul, thought you were wishing you'd gone into elem.
daisy - There is a lady at my school who is doing her student teaching and a long term sub at the same time.
MREgg - California is only going to get worse for teachers. Since all of the budget surplus went to Texas energy companies they've announced almost 1 billion in education cuts.
paul-dfw-tx - I guess i would have to look into certification again ....and see what will have to be done
Magoo - Mrs.M, I sub K-6, myself
1-I'd-Bubba - paul, who's taking the college courses: You or the kids???
MrsM/PA - I heard CT is desperate for subs
Ruff - MrsM/PA...good for you. I can't handle wiping noses, etc. I work with middle and high school kids.
MrsM/PA - I also sub MS & HS
MrsM/PA - but I'm deciding I don't enjoy the young ones as much as I once did
Magoo - I would rather wipe a nose any day than cope with Attitude and Hormones and Language![]()
paul-dfw-tx - bubba I would have to take about 45 hours to get elementary certified
1-I'd-Bubba - MrsM, I think EVERYONE is desperate for Subs!![]()
Ruff - They need subs up in Canada. I got two requests from there for my Sub Guide today.
Magoo - although, K's wear me out.........little pirahas, they are, scurrying around your ankles, nibbling at your nerves......
paul-dfw-tx - magoo...no if I had it to do all over again ...would have looked at elementary closer
MREgg - I'll take 1-8, but prefer MS.
1-I'd-Bubba - paul, but you don't even really want to teach elementary, right? So why do it??
Magoo - Miss BTL, my favorite sandwich!!![]()
Ruff - I think the older I get, the more I enjoy the more mature students.
MrsM/PA - amen to the K's-tapping your arm, tattle-telling
Magoo - I don't know how to spell 'piranhas', do I ??
paul-dfw-tx - bubba I agree..it was just a comment..really
MrsM/PA - if I had to do it again I'd look at secondary
Magoo - k's also screech a lot: "TEE-CHER !!"
Ruff - Anyone ever sub at college level?
paul-dfw-tx - but being a fellow I think I would have an advantage in finding a job in elementary
MrsM/PA - I can't spell tattle
daisy - K is not one of my favorites either
1-I'd-Bubba - Magoo, are you underfed, or what?? Anyway, as an ex restaurant owner, it's "BLT!"![]()
Magoo - so, BTL, wherefore art thou???
Miss BTL - Thanks, Magoo. Happy to see you too!
Magoo - ***hanging head in shame***
MREgg - Third grade can really rock, but I do like the greater opportunity to use the men's room that MS offers![]()
Miss BTL - I art in eastern Wash.
daisy - yes Paul you would
Magoo - 1-eye's pickin' on me, teecher!!!
1-I'd-Bubba - paul, I THINK you could teach in L.A. with what you have right now.
Magoo - BTL, you are in eastern Washington state???
MrsM/PA - I taught hs eng. today-talking about love in Romeo & Juliet. The first class talked about sex the whole time. I tried to straighten them out that sex ain't always about love
Miss BTL - lol, MREgg.... I've enjoyed your posts on the board....You are so right; bathroom breaks are soooo important, and non-existent at some schools.
paul-dfw-tx - daisy...my son went through elem school with out any male teachers
Miss BTL - yep, magoo Wenatchee
Ruff - Is every one keeping up with Harry Potter?
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, I find bathroom breaks THE toughest to arrange in MS!
MREgg - I haven't subbed at college level, but I'd be interested in teaching poli sci at a local JC. No openings though. A lot in Southern Ca though.
daisy - the school I am at now has 2 male teachers
Magoo - HA!! I'm in Clarkston!!!
Miss BTL - Howdy, neighbor!
1-I'd-Bubba - Hey, Magoo: I've been known to change my beige patch for a black one, ya' know!![]()
paul-dfw-tx - daisy and they would take 5 or 6 more if they could find them I will bet
Magoo - Ruff, I am quite possibly the only person on the planet who has NOT yet read a HP book.
Ruff - MRegg...Have you investigated the JC jobs?
Magoo - "There's a meetin' here tonight...there's a meetin' here tonight..."
daisy - um there are two of us magoo
MrsM/PA - I started to, but never finished one-HP, that is
Magoo - Mozart, we are just generally chatting about subbing.........
daisy - yes paul I am sure they would
Magoo - daisy, YES!! Let's start a club!
1-I'd-Bubba - mozrt, ya' gonna chastise me for listening to "Smooth" Jazz right now?![]()
daisy - ok sounds good. We will get our own chatboard lol
Magoo - works for me, daisy!! We gots to get a name..............
MREgg - We get 15 minutes after second period, just about time for my morning coffee worked its magicGot a 10 year old of my own who's foaming at the mouth to see Harry. We'll get around to it in the next few days.
1-I'd-Bubba - HP book? I though Hewlett Packard made 'puters!![]()
Magoo - "I Ain't Never Read Harry Potter And I Don't Intend To In This Lifetime" ????? kinda long, tho, would maybe not fit on letterhead paper........
Magoo - ***groaning at 1-eye***
Ruff - Magoo...just see the movie!
MrsM/PA - not surprised someone took HP that way
1-I'd-Bubba - to no one [& everyone] ah, yes... Harry Potter! [blush]
Miss BTL - I actually met another sub today....Have any of you actually met other subs?
Magoo - 'Just see the movie', he says!! HA!! Catch ME waiting in ling for ages and having to put up with all the chatter that goes on during a movie these days. I think not. Will rent it, maybe.
MrsM/PA - did you disappear or was it me?
Ruff - Hi bubba...glad to see your still alive and kicking. Hope the eye work goes well after the first of the year.
Miss BTL - It's funny how the teachers and the kids think all of us subs know each other. They think we have secret meetings in a cave somewhere, I guess.
paul-dfw-tx - well I have to hit the road folks enjoyed the gab
MREgg - Ruff, I'm registered with the Community College job board and get notices of openings almost every week. Nothing in my area though. I did apply for a Speech/Forensics position, but nothing came of it.
Magoo - I know a few subs in my district.........but the turn-over is so great, the young ones don't stick around long.
daisy - gee last time hubby took me to a movie he would not let me watch it. We may as well have stayed home lol
MrsM/PA - there you are-this is weird
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL... often meet Subs. But I tend towards the blabbermouth side in T lounges. Plus, @ one site where I work often I KNOW all the contracted Ts.
MrsM/PA - yeah, most subs I know are older-my age
Ruff - Magoo...I haven't been to a movie in 25 years. I watch on Sat. TV or rent.
Miss BTL - .....hmmm...wondering what daisy and her husband were doing....![]()
Magoo - A-HA, BTL!! I thought you hadn't been to the recent meetings in the cave!!
Magoo - bye, Paul!!
daisy - anatomy?
Miss BTL - lol magoo...I had to go...my turn to bring the snickerdoodles
Ruff - MRegg...you've got a good niche...but as I was taught in college. To be a college teacher all you need is the job. Perhaps at a police academy would suit you better?
Magoo - Mrs.M, I'm 58---I'm older than most of the TEACHERS in this area![]()
MREgg - Had a reunion with a sub in the staff room on Friday, we hadn't seen each other in two years. We both used to be building subs and gave it up.
MrsM/PA - I need to go-son has to have his daily fix of instant messenger with his friends or his head will burst. Have a happy holiday , everyone!
1-I'd-Bubba - Oooh, caves, BTL![I've GOT to try to post an editorial cartoon from Sun's "San Diego Union Tribune!"
![]()
Magoo - ***slobbering and drooling at thought of snickerdoodles***
Miss BTL - so magoo....general q for you....how you doin'?....a while back you sounded a bit down ....your posts are notably upbeat once again...does that mean you are back in the swing?
Magoo - bye MrsM!!
Magoo - well, bless your heart!! yes, I'm feeling perkier these days............kind of you to ask!![]()
Miss BTL - picturing MREgg and long lost fellow sub running to each other in slow motion in t. lounge.![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - Ruff, have you heard of the Sub training SDCOE co-sponsors?
Magoo - I had to up my dose of the Mighty Z this month....I usually can go down 50 mgs in the spring and summer, but this time of year is hard for me, so back up I go.
MREgg - Never thought about police, but crim law isn't my area of expertise. I like business start up and tech law, but not enough to do it every day. Can't stand being locked up in a cube with nothing but a computer for company.
Ruff - Bubba...I'm not sure!
Magoo - I wouldn't mind being locked up in a cube if Robert Redford was locked up in the same cube...............
Magoo - Oh, gosh, I gots to go!! On Lifetime channel, they are doing a 1-hour on my IDOL, Judge Judy!!! It was fun, folks, I hope tomorrow goes well for all of you!!![]()
Miss BTL - Have you seen his prison movie, magoo...I meant to, but it came and went too fast. I'll catch him with Brad Pitt, though.
Vacation Lady - I sub on my days off when needed
Miss BTL - Ruff...good to see you. Your posts are always so helpful.
MREgg - Miss BTL, it was almost like that. The kids used to think that we had something going back then. I loaned a jacket a cool day, (she'd gotten stuck with PE and wasn't prepared) and ever since they used to tease us both. Good thing my wife is good natured.
1-I'd-Bubba - Vacation Lady, what do you do when not subbing?
Ruff - BTL...thanks, glad to help where I can. How are you doing now?
Miss BTL - MREgg....kids are great at matchmaking.
MREgg - I'm no Bob Redford, although my hair that isn't gray is still blond.
Miss BTL - One day the JR H kids kept after me...."Miss BTL, do you like Star Trek?" "MIss BTL, do you like WWF wrestling?" "Miss BTL, what kind of car do you drive?"
Miss BTL - I found out that their Sci teacher (single) said he'd only settle for a girl who drove a Ferrari, and would watch Star Trek and wrestling with him.
Ruff - I'm going to have a cup of coffee and read my Mac Magazine. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Miss BTL - Tah, Ruff
Miss BTL - Just lovely, Ruff....thanks
daisy - I need to go. Thank you for making me feel so welcome tonight
Miss BTL - Bye daisy...is everyone going?
Miss BTL - I was hoping to chat about subbing....I rarely get to these meetings...too busy in the cave, you know.
MREgg - Friday I wore a Hgwoarts shirt. The kids asked if I went there. Said yep, all teachers do. Where do you think classroom pets come from. Mess with me and I'll turn you into a frog. Except you, you can be a fly. Frogs love flys you know.
1-I'd-Bubba - Ruff, the SAMS system for City Schools was "down" from early Fri evening until after 0530 today! Must have been ONE mell of a hess!
Miss BTL - lol, MREgg. Do you sub for younger grades, or just the ones who get your jokes?
MREgg - Miss BTL, did you answer the questions correctly?
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, I'm gonna hang for awhile more...
Miss BTL - uhhhh......questions?...oh...well...no cool car and no to wrestling, but I DO like the old star trek show
MREgg - Mostly MS, but some 2-5 as well. I try to make it fun for them.
MREgg - The original ST is still my favorite.
Miss BTL - I noticed the sci guy hovering by my door after that day whenever I'd sub in the building....makes me wonder what the kids told him.
Miss BTL - I'll bet your good, too....a sense of humor is the best things we subs can bring to the classroom.
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, I go by "Mr. H" in the classroom. Every one in awhile a kids will say something about "Triple H," one of the WWF "characters" [I guess]!![]()
Miss BTL - oops...you're....gosh...I've been in chat too long...have picked up bad spelling habits...not from you guys though....![]()
Miss BTL - Gosh...this is a cozy room now...Is it my breath?
Miss BTL - I scoped out some of the Harry Wong articles on here. I like what he says about the first five minutes being "Prime Time." Have you guys read his articles or seen his books and tapes?
1-I'd-Bubba - The power bars I'm gnoshin', perhaps?![]()
MREgg - I go by MR. Egg with the young ones, they all ROFL and then we spend five minutes figuring out what kind of egg I am. The MS call me MR E (Mystery) and sometimes the ones who know me from elementary still call me Mr. Egg.
MREgg - I can spell, but I'll be darned if I'll ever learn how to type well![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - Wong does nice stuff, IMO. I've his "1st Days of School," though I've not spent much time with it...![]()
Miss BTL -BTL is Beautiful Teacher Lady....I once made a slip of the tongue (or was it....? hmmm....) when introducing myself to a 1st grade class..."You can call me Miss Lastnamehere or Miss C. or ...Miss Beautiful Teacher Lady...I respond to all of those." :)
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, do you do ALL subjs in MS? Also, what's the daily rate in San Jose??
MREgg - I agree about the first five being prime. Grab them early and they'll be with you all day.
1-I'd-Bubba - Clever handle, BTL!![]()
1-I'd-Bubba - **ABSOLUTELY** on the 1st 5 mins for Subs!!![]()
Miss BTL - Yep, MREgg. I like Ruff's suggestion to tell the class a quick story to get them used to your voice, too.
MREgg - I'm comfortable teaching math, science, history and lit. Cooking, art and wood shop are fun too. I'm on a long term sixth grade math science right now.
Miss BTL - I watched this one sub (don't ya hate it when you have to travel from room to room as the cart teacher?) ....anyway...she pushed her cart in and began her lecture....Not one kid was listening to her.
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, I start off having them self-discover my raffle system. Making the initial connection is **CRUCIAL!!**
MREgg - Daily rate is around $115 for first 20 days, raises to $125 after that. Long-term gets $145.
Miss BTL - Lovely, MrEgg....how long term....do you LOVE it? ...I'm so jealous. sixth is a favorite of mine and so is math/sci.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, how are you?? [Notice my use of phonics, Human Resource types! ]![]()
Bluette - hello all, just got in from working at the dept store
Miss BTL - Not clever, bubba....a bit embarrassing, but it keeps my ego inflated to full capacity.
Miss BTL - Busy with christmas shoppers, Bluette?
MREgg - BTL, you should make that slip every day. I'm sure they'd love it.
Bluette - is eveeryone as busy at school as i am? more than one call /day
1-I'd-Bubba - OK, BTL... G-6 is a "favorite?" What's your secret? :'(
Bluette - people aren't buying much yet but we are so busy with stock
Miss BTL - Well, I'm known all over school. What with that one class shouting at me from the swings.....goodness!....I know what school the kids are from when I see them in the groc store with mom and dad, though.
Miss BTL - My secret?.....(Don't tell anyone.....but here it is...I don't really care about them. I care about ME)
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, this is a slack time for me! [Hope it's not the letter to the Editor I had published Sat...]
MREgg - I've got them until February. I agree sixth and math/science are my favorites too. We have another sixth grade core teacher going out on materity in March, so it looks like I'm just going to move two doors down the hall still have some of the same kids.
Bluette - I write under my name- W.C.B. , when the students say whats that, I whip out pix of my g'son, the Worlds Cutest Baby!!!
Miss BTL - Selfish? Yes, but caring about yourself is the only way to sub.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, heard my 1st Xmas song in a store this PM! :-*
Bluette - I don't mind 6th, 9th and 10th in one HS are rotten to the core
Miss BTL - Oh sure....the occasional emotion for a student slips through, but what the hey.
Bluette - Lucky you-I have had to listen to songs of the season for 2 wks now
Miss BTL - Sounds perfect, MREgg
Bluette - and they aren't ones I know, just funky bluesy ones
MREgg - We're trying something new this year. Student-Led Conferences. Just facilitated my first 10 today.
1-I'd-Bubba - Connect the dots for me, BTL. Selfish & G-6???:-$
Bluette - then there will be after T'giving, the "dead singers" medley, Elvis, Dinah, Judy, Bing etc
Miss BTL - Dot one: It's important that I have a good day.....Dot two: I'm the leader of the classroom; if I lead them well, I will have a good day.....Dot three...well, actually there are only two dots.![]()
MREgg - Sounds like I'll be avoiding the stores for a while. I'm not a Scrooge, but I don't want Christmas music until late December thank you berry berry much.
Bluette - I am in HS Global Hist for 2 days then Home Arts and Careers for 1/2 day shortened classes on Wed
1-I'd-Bubba - Hey, Blue [note the phonics again]... "Boney's Funky Christmas" is probably my favorite Xmas album! ;-)
Miss BTL - Global Hist...is that the new way of saying World Hist?
Bluette - I need snow before I get excited about Xmas, then again, I am Jewish so it has a whole different meaning at my house
Miss BTL - Is "Global" more PC?
Bluette - Stanley ,you crack me up!!!
Bluette - really PC, and I have Native Amer students in this school, they take offense at almost everything
1-I'd-Bubba - Got, it, BTL: Kind of a hard _ss attitude![But, hey, it's almost GUARANTEED to TAKE that for G-6!
![]()
Miss BTL - Really? That surprises me, Blue....Do they stand up for their heritage or are they just complaining for complaining sake?
Bluette - 5th graders took a state wide test last week, almost had a rebellion because there was a picture of Indian False Face Masks and only certain people are allowed to cast their eyes upon certain mask s
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, I've been doin' LOTS of wee ones recently, so my, uh, "humor" kind of gets thwarted.![]()
Bluette - umm, they won't stand during the pledge of allegience, told me that sitting quietly is the most respect they can give us
MREgg - Snow's great, but we only see about three day's a year in San Jose and that's only on the mountain tops. Down here in the valley we know it's Christmas when it's pouring rain for a week straight.
Miss BTL - Not hard sss at all, Stanley....I'm the friendliest gal around...which is why I need to remind myself from time to time that ...here it is...I don't care....repeat it Miss BTL....you don't care...you are here to do your job well...not to get emotional....
Bluette - I love the littlest ones but they sure do a numbeer on you, can wear you out just watching them at recess
Bluette - did K last week, they crashed into each other, kicked , fell, cried a lot and went to the nurse for ice packs
Miss BTL - yep, blue...and you find you've turned into Quazimoto by the end of the day.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, I'm familiar with JWs & the pledge, but do you buy that about sitting? I once had a Somalli boy tell me his religion wouldn't "permit" him to pledge. AND IT WAS **PURE** BUNK!! O![]()
Miss BTL - I'd have trouble with sitting, also.
Miss BTL - Respectful people stand.
Miss BTL - To sit would be like burning the flag to me.
Bluette - I had a 4th gr girl say she doesn't recite the pledge because her mom is a Brit and her dad is Japanese, but she was the first student I saw with red white and blue ribbons after 9-11
Miss BTL - Pluralism is where it's at.....I'd tell them to stand and if they refused, I think I'd ask them to stay after to explain it to me....respect, find out what it means to me
MREgg - Blue that's why I never take K and avoid one if I can. More mommying than a gruff 'ol lawyer dude can muster up.
Bluette - I grew up in Montreal, an American ex-pat, and I stood, recited, sang national anthems and even said Christian prayers, wouldn't have occurred to me to sit them out
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, I guess there are varying defs of hard _ass. Usually I describe it as "sitting" on them. I usually know within the first min or 2 if that's what I HAVE to do...it
Miss BTL - Have "sat" on a few 6th graders at the start of the period, but can usually ease off by the end. Harder to do the reverse.
Bluette - well, the Nat. Amer pop is almost one half the school so the admin pretty much lets them do their own thing, but those are the kids who get detentions, wander the halls, great for lateness and absence every day
Miss BTL - Times are a bit different. I love that parents know that the school isn't the end all be all authority, but...sometimes...some parents enable their kids to be jerks when they back up their "rights."
Bluette - it gets old fast, the elem is better, one is on the Res. and many of the staff are Indians
1-I'd-Bubba - The Somalli boy I mention was a piece of work! I had him in a G-5 long term. He KNEW I often chided his lack of seriousness during the pledge. And that particular day he was _issed @ me because he incorrectly jumped to conclusions about something.
Bluette - no flags in that school, they are the Onondaga Nation
Miss BTL - Glad to here there is some representation on staff there.. Here there is a high hispanic pop, but the only hisp. on staff are a few parapros.
Bluette - I have taught Ukranians, Vietnamese, etc not speaking any English
MREgg - BTL, I think that you'd be opening a huge can of worms. Best to leave it alone. Litigious parent's lawyers would be dreaming of their next Beamer.
1-I'd-Bubba - I agree about your "timing" with G-6s, BTL. City Schools here has a site which is ONLY G-6 -- with **EVERY** S bussed from the District's [by & large] LOWEST scoring elementaries!
Bluette - Native Amer. teachers and other staff get preferential hiring, i am the outsider, but I was invited to the Harvest Fest Dinner on last day before T"giving Break
MREgg - We have over sixty language and dialects spoken in my district.
Miss BTL - Let 'em litigate, MREgg...they can have everything I've got...my bills, my Top Ramen, my holey socks...everything.
Bluette - A Nat, Amer K teacher, married to a white man, thus living off the Res but raised there is my ally in that Bldg, also sec'y and janitor
Bluette - glad you are all still awake, I know I probably missed some great chat tonight
MREgg - They'd go after the deep pockets and name the district and the district would sell you out in a flash and then settle.
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, have you dealt with any Somalli's? Males, in particular, tend to have **NO** impulse control -- a sociological phenomenon based upon the patriarchical nature of their society. |-o
Bluette - are you all on West Coast where it is only7:39?
Miss BTL - I'm in washington state
Bluette - I haven't met any Somali students, think we are lacking in C NY
1-I'd-Bubba - What's all this litigious talk? ]:o What did I miss??? :-[
Miss BTL - This is a very friendly bunch. I'm glad I logged on.....I was wondering if there would be the "vents" that we get on the board.
Miss BTL - Goldy, I've noticed, is especially good at venting....bless her heart.
Bluette - no, Stanley won't let us be fresh to each other
1-I'd-Bubba - How about Hmong, everyone? And Chaldeans? [My understanding is that they're only in certain parts of the U.S.]
Bluette - love all the blues on the board--my fav color![]()
Miss BTL - and I haven't seen TPOV post in awhile....I miss the way she stirs up the board.
Bluette - we hav Hmong population in Syracuse, they have huge families which gave new life to a Catholic church near downtown
1-I'd-Bubba - Magoo would NOT like your TPOV comment, BTL!![]()
MREgg - I have had some Somalis. Since I'm male, they don't try the same tricks. I did work in Saudi Arabia back in the early eighties and have had a lot of experience with Somalis while there. I find that Russian and Bosnian boys are much tougher to handle, They all seem to suffer from the Golden Child syndrome. Generally smart, but not very motivated.
Miss BTL - why not, bubba?
1-I'd-Bubba - Are your Hmong Catholic, Blue? They come from an animist background in Laos [largely].
Bluette - yes, Catholics, my son went to school with a girl who went to Cornell on a volleyball scholarship
Bluette - oooh, TPOV vs Magoo
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, Magoo feels TPOV is "after" her.
Miss BTL - lol...really?
Bluette - love to go to farmers mkt on Sat, it looks and sounds like the United Nations
1-I'd-Bubba - A Hmong volleyball player? They're physically QUITE a diverse group -- NO one is quite sure from they "originally" emigrated...
Bluette - maybe it was ping pong, but I don't think so
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, being male hasn't helped ME much with Somalis...![]()
Bluette - short stature, not slender
MREgg - I've been sort of hoping that the flame wars on the board would die out. An awful lot of whining and complaining. I tell my students that only wine that I want comes with my dinner.
Bluette - I enjoy the dversity, our home dist. is so white bread
Bluette - and I grew up with lots of diversity in Mtl, many accents and cultures
Miss BTL - Yep, MrEgg...your humor is perrrfect for 6th.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, that is the "usual" Hmong. But there are some blond haired/blue eyed versions, though virtually ALL were killed off by the Chinese. I've been to several Hmong New Yr celebrations, seeing 1 male that was REED thin & about 6'5"!!![]()
Bluette - I need your help fellow subs, my sweet spouse says i have to decide NOW if I want to go back for a Masters so i can be a cert. (nut) teacher and have my own classroom someday
Miss BTL - It's so hard to be clear on chat boards. We went through a few flaming times, didn't we? All because ppl took things one way, when something else was intended.
1-I'd-Bubba - A Masters would NOT be necessary in virtually any other state, Blue!
Bluette - is it worth the $ and effort, will I find more satisfaction as a professional sub???
Miss BTL - Your degree isn't in ed, Blue?
Bluette - This is New York, land of regulations and taxes galore
Miss BTL - aren't you a professional sub now?
Bluette - English Lit, no ed courses, subbing by the seat of my pants
1-I'd-Bubba - Personally, I tend to think some posters are too thin skinned... But that's just MY opinion...
Miss BTL - I think almost any ed is worth it, Blue. Even if you don't use it...you use it.
Miss BTL - Think of "Dr." Laura....maybe one day you can have your own radio show....Dr. Blue
MREgg - Bubba, I don't cut them much slack. The first offense nets a referral. Once they know that I won't take any garbage they behave. The office backs me on this.
Bluette - BTL, thats an oxymoron, no benefits, no security in knowing you will be called, have to schmooze everybody to show you are a good egg
Miss BTL - Agree with you, Stanley.
1-I'd-Bubba - I've **NO** intentions of gettin a Masters! @ 54 I want to study what **I** want to study **WHEN** I want to study it!![]()
Miss BTL - Schmoozing is my favorite hobby.
Bluette - maybe i will bestow a PHD on myself!!! Our admin. usually comes from one Teachers College nearby, are coaches and Phys Ed Teachers first
Miss BTL - I schmooze all day...custodians, secs, students, teachers, admin...well...actually, I don't bother schmoozing admin...maybe I should?
Bluette - I love to schmooze and do a great job, I think
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, now that I'm getting more of a "handle" on that particular culture, that's probably what I'M going to start doing...
Miss BTL - Why is it that so many coaches become admin?
Bluette - The VP at one school is my bud, he is actually human and was a Hist teacher for many years but is still young
Bluette - cause their friends hire them. It is like a Frat brother or something
Miss BTL - I have a problem with one former hist tchr turned admin....I posted on the board about this....don't know why, but he and I just don't click...lots of awkward silences
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, I think it's because of the "tough" guy image. On the other hand, lots of admins here came out of SPED. In THAT case I feel it's because they grew to dislike SPED but DIDN'T want bigger #s in a classroom setting.
Bluette - Fri, in first period, a kid used the F word, instant referral, another wrote me a note that said "shut up B****" so i don't teach that subject any more, can get along without abuse and confrontations
1-I'd-Bubba - BTL, unfortunately I feel SOME administrators are on power trips...
Bluette - BTL is he psyching you out?
MREgg - With so many different cultural norms to deal with, it's really hard figuring out what's going to work best. My biggest problem is figuring out how to motivate Mexican boys to actually do some school work. Many of them are just convinced that trying very uncool.
Bluette - I felt awful but realize it was that bunch of kids that day, nothing to do with me
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, how old were these foul-mouthed pigs??
Miss BTL - We are past that....am psyched already.
Bluette - 9th graders, you know me, i don't back off from challenges but that I don't need
Bluette - I want to enjoy teaching and be able to give something more than the lesson plan
1-I'd-Bubba - Egg, with Latino males you're also facing the known cultural fact that MANY are pampered @ home! ]-:
Miss BTL - Boston Public just started
Miss BTL - about as realistic as Ally McBeal, but I'm starting to like it.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, as you've stated, their actions have **NOTHING** to do with YOU. Kick their butts out & go right on truckin'!![]()
Bluette - It is getting late and the 6 am alarm is set to go off
Miss BTL - Way to connect the dots, Stanley.
Bluette - Stanley, you are so supportive, yeah I do kick butt, and I tell them this sub cant be sunk, your torpedoes are useless
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, thanks for joinin'! Have a **SUPER** Holiday!!![]()
Miss BTL - Sleep well, Blue.
Bluette - g'night friends, Happy Thanksgiving to you all, I am Thankful to have met such a cool bunch of folks online
MREgg - Many of these boys definitely rule the roost. Mom caters and Dad has little presence, either working two jobs or not around at all. The attitude starts very young. One boy in sixth grade class has had me as a sub since second grade. Same issues then as now.
1-I'd-Bubba - Blue, just DO it... with as little comment as possible [unless they're sayhing that kind of crap to OTHER people...]
1-I'd-Bubba - I'm reasonably fluent in Spanish, living off of the bario jobs [though I can work most anywhere]. I'll probably be contracted in a L.A. bario school next yr. WISH I had the answers, but I don't...![]()
Miss BTL - Gonna log off, boys....love the company, but I just remembered I haven't eaten supper.....Thanks for the lovely chat...hope to see you next time
MREgg - I'm also reasonably fluent in Spanish. First wife is from Argentina. Just hate losing these kids.
1-I'd-Bubba - Well, you 2... got to think about packin' it in! [I've no job yet for mañana, so the phone is likely to ring @ about 0500... ]-o
MREgg - See ya BTL. Thinking the same thing myself. Got some math papers to grade too.
MREgg - Adios amigos.
Miss BTL - Ah the joys of the long term, MREgg.
1-I'd-Bubba - You're BOTH a couple of my favorite SubBoard posters! Happy Holiday!!![]()
Miss BTL - Adios, maestros.
MREgg - It's not all wine and roses is it?
1-I'd-Bubba - Going, going...
MREgg - Ditto!
MREgg - Gone
1-I'd-Bubba - { poof!!! }
