Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Kathleen - Hi Jackie! Do you work as a substitute teacher?
Jackie - hi Kathleen
Jackie - yes
Kathleen - Do you attend these chats each month?
SubDuck - logged on. --- (205.188.200.29 - Mon Nov 20 6:00pm)
Kathleen - Hi SubDuck! cute name
Jackie - I've been off the net for a while, but I did attend a few last spring
Jackie - Hi, subduck
Jackie - what grads do you all sub for?
Kathleen - Janet/AR usually moderates these chats for substitute teachers, but she is away at a conference so she couldn't log on tonight.
Kathleen - Hi lee!
lee (aka lee/sped) - Hi, Kathleen!
Jackie - hi, Lee. How are you tonight?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Seeing you here kind of threw me for a minute, Kathleen!
Kathleen - lee, are you subbing?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Good, Jackie, how about you?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Not any more, Kathleen......<big grin>
Jackie - Just fine. I've cut back my hours some this fall because we're moving in a couple of weeks
Kathleen - lee, LOL, I told Janet I'd open the meeting and post her regrets. She thought the regulars could carry on without her. She's so dedicated I don't know whether we've ever had a session w/o her!
lee (aka lee/sped) - I subbed the last two years but got hired this past summer. I come to the chats because I miss my buddies.
Jackie - I don't remember her ever not being here before.
Kathleen - lee, so you are not subbing but employed full time in sped?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Yes, Kathleen.
Jackie - Lee, what grade are you teaching?
Kathleen - lee, Janet is the same, she teaches full time now but wants to continue with the substitute teacher chats.
Jackie - hi, Julie
Kathleen - Well, you're off to a fine chat, so I'll leave you now. Janet will be back next month.
lee (aka lee/sped) - Jackie, I have jr high and high school LD and developmentally handicapped classes.
Jackie - Does anyone else have the day off on Wednesday?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Hi Stanley!
Stanley - lee, How's everything going with your class?
Jackie - Wow, Lee, that's awsome! They must keep you busy.
Kathleen - Ah, Stanley! Hi, a message from Janet: I can't be here, am attending a conference. Would you moderate in my place tonight?
SubDuck - My kids are off on Wednesday, reg. teachers are in meetings. I will probably sub at a year-round school.
Jackie - OK, Stanley, what shall we talk about?
lee (aka lee/sped) - Good, Stanley....they keep me on my toes. Tomorrow night is parent teacher conference night, too!
Stanley - Hmmm, I'll be happy to. Do I just do my regular thing?
Jackie - That's one reason I'm glad I'm just a sub, Lee
lee (aka lee/sped) - Yes, Jackie, it does keep me busy!
Stanley - Say, what does everyone think of roving assignments? I LOVE them, but I think not everyone agrees...
lee (aka lee/sped) - LOL Jackie....right about now, I'm wishing I was too!
Jackie - I'm sure you'll do fine. But I know they made me nervous when I had my own classroom. I'm sure that hasn't chnaged.
lee (aka lee/sped) - Stanley, I liked them, though it was nice to have a long-term once in a while, too.
SubDuck - I'm with you Stanley. I love knowing I only have to deal with a group for an even more limited amount of time!
Jackie - I don't think I'd take a long term right now. to weeks with one class is about my limit.
Stanley - I'm HOPING to work Wed! I had a 3 day assignment for Mon-Wed cancelled, but I'm received a 2 day job for today & tomorrow.
lee (aka lee/sped) - Jackie, I never realixed the sheer amount of work involved beforehand of these conferences!
lee (aka lee/sped) - I'm off on Wednesday.....thank heavens!
Jackie - Oh, yes. The other day I was in a second grade class and saw report cards on her desk. Made me glad I wasn't the one who had to fill them out.
SubDuck - I would think Wednesday would be a busy day, Stanley...lots of people travel and/or are preparing.
Stanley - S.Duck, I posted something about it on the strand where I asked what tired us. I was kind of surprised somebody specifically mentioned roving...
Jackie - That's one of the reasons our district decideed to give us the day before Thhanksgiving off.
lee (aka lee/sped) - Stanley, remember the post I made in August or so about my sub folder? And all the work I put into it?
Jackie - Actually, I have a roving assignment every Tuesday in one of our elementary schools. I like it.
Julie - How do I make my chat area bigger?
Stanley - S.Duck, YES, but... one of my districts has their yr round schools off all this wk, another is getting ready for a track change. Both of those are bad for biz, as they say!
lee (aka lee/sped) - Cool, Jackie! It's nice to have a chance to see a building that frequently, I think.
SubDuck - Yes, Stanley, I remember seeing that. I was surprised too!
Jackie - I know that buildsing well. My kids went to school there, and it hasn't changed all that much.
SubDuck - Oh, that could put a damper on things! Where do you work?
Stanley - Jackie, EVERY Tues? What's the occasion? I might KILL for something like that! {G}
lee (aka lee/sped) - Jackie, I really miss that part of subbing....all my friends are in the Primary and Intermediate buildings, and I'm stuck at the high school!
Jackie - I cover the SPED meetings so the teachers can go (to the meetings, that is) Been doing it for 3 years now.
SubDuck - I had the BEST experience last spring. One of my schools hired me to teach intervention to the kindergartens...
Stanley - S.Duck, I'm in San Diego. Are you, per chance, in OR?
lee (aka lee/sped) - LOL Jackie....I did it, too! Up and down stairs all day!
Jackie - Exactly what did you do, subduck? Sounds interesting.
SubDuck - I roved to 6 different K classes throughout the day, working with small groups of 3 or 4 kids.
Stanley - Kinder intervention? Please explain...
SubDuck - Nope, I'm closer...Los Angeles
Jackie - Building's on one floor, Lee. But I log lots of miles.
lee (aka lee/sped) I bet, Jackie....
Jackie - That sounds like fun.
SubDuck - I played games and drilled them on their ABC's....letter names and sounds.
Stanley - S.Duck, that's FASCINATING! Were you pd any extra for that?
Jackie - This year I've been volunteering at a preschool one day a week.
SubDuck - about $2.25 an
Jackie - SubDuck, where are you in LA? My brother lives there.
SubDuck - hour...sorry, my kids just bounced a ball off my keyboard! :0
Stanley - S.Duck, L.A. Unified? If so, what is the daily sub pay rate there? I know they have a supplemental for certain, uh, "areas!"
SubDuck - I'm in the San Fernando Valley
Jackie - He's right in the city in Hancock Park.
Stanley - Hello, CSP! But the Valley is part of Unified, right?
SubDuck - Yep
Stanley - How many Ts, more or less, in Unified? Also, what's your daily sub rate in the Valley?
Frank - I have never taught a day in my life yet. I have another year of school. When I start I probably will start off subbing to get experience and make connections for a full time job.
Jackie - Lot's of people do that. You could probably get a full time job here in NH fresh from school. We need teachers.
SubDuck - Be careful, Frank, that's how I started and I'm in my 20th year as a sub....ended up liking it too much!
Stanley - Frank, That is a **MOST** wise decision! You'll be SO much more ready for your student teaching experience that way!
Jackie - Stanley, you're awfully quiet tonight.
Stanley - S.Duck, I'd LIKE a contract, but I also ENJOY subbing!
Jackie - I enjoy subbing, too. I can't teach full-time because of hubby's health, but I really like what I'm doing right now.
Stanley - What, me quiet, Jackie? I was a raving maniac today! Our Gatekeeping Computer had my jobs ALL loused up!
Jackie - I am so glad we don't have a gatekeeper. We just went the live sub caller route of the first time this year.
MissB - I am just thinking about subbing.
Stanley - I'm a HUGE computer fan, Jackie. However, what is the saying about "garbage in, garbage out?" When I find out what happened I'll post on the board, but using a pseudonym.
MissB - Thank you. I just thinking about subbing and I wanted to know just how you like it.
Jackie - It's great work if you like it, Miss B
Julie - I would KILL for a fulltime job. I am sick of the whole reintroducing myself thing.
Jackie - LOL, Stanley. I'm a computer fan, too, but they can mess things up sometimes.
Stanley - I LOVE it MissB! Yet I was QUITE hesitant before I actually started!
MissB - Is it like the first day of school over and over?
SubDuck - My first year, I hated it. But I'm now in my 20th and love it.
Jackie - I've worked int the same district for 8 years, so most of the kids know me. It helps. But it can get old, Julie. I know what you mean.
Jackie - There are days when I still think I hatred it. But not so many this year.
Frank - I was saying I probably have to start subbing as a means to an end, a teaching job, I don't think I'll enjoy it. I remember when I went to school a substitute meant party and rowdy time. However if you say you enjoy it, maybe things have changed or maybe the correct procedures and discipline methods is the answer. Maybe subbing won't be so bad.
Stanley - MissB, NOT at all -- at least once you get your own routine! I believe there's a strand on the Board regarding this. Moreover, find one of my posts there, send me an E-mail, & I'll send you MY "routine."
SubDuck - Frank, that also probably depends on the grade level. I'm in elementary, so most of the time the kids are pretty nice, and at least still controlable.
Julie - I have a lot of good subbing days. I can taste how much I want my own class though.
Jackie - Depends on where you sub. Some of the older kids think it's party time. But once they get to know me and figure out it isn't, we get along fine.
Jackie - And I'm sure you'll get one soon, Julie.
SubDuck - I have more problems with the adults, than the kids!
Stanley - Frank, what grades are you looking towards? I'm Elementary with a smattering of MS.
Jackie - Yes, I know what you mean, subduck. Sometimes "we son't get no respect"
Stanley - S.Duck, by adults you mean our contracted colleagues?
SubDuck - Yeah, Jackie. I've had TA's take advantage...disappear for an hour to run off a couple of work sheets...
Frank - I'm going to be a high school history teacher. I'm talking 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
Jackie - I've never had that happen. But I've had TA's who think they should be running the class.
SubDuck - Partner teachers, like in K, who dish out work for me to do and/or expect me to team, but then they don't do a thing for me!
Jackie - I don't think I could sub in a hs class!
Julie - It is easier once you have been in a school before. Even if you haven't been in the class kids recognize you
Jackie - We don't have partner teacher classes where I work. I think I'm glad.
Stanley - S.Duck, I'd be sure to let someone know about the T.A.! Site administrator? Classroom T? However, unless I was in a SPED class, or there were other extenuating circumstances, the flaky aide might not be that big a deal for me.
SubDuck - I'm with you Jackie! My rule is no students bigger than me!
Jackie - I find middle school subbing easier each year, because all the kids have known me for so long now.
Jenny - I have a question about teaching syllables to third graders
Jenny - i am doing a lesson on writing haikus tomorrow
SubDuck - Yeah, I usually let it pass...but I do "tattle" now and leave it in my note to the reg. T. "We had to skip groups because your TA was being making copies..."
Jenny - what exactly is a syllable?
Jackie - Yeah, subduck, but there are some 6th graders who are bigger than me.
Jenny - and how do I explain it to the kids?
SubDuck - er, busy...
Jackie - I would think the teacher would like to know that.
Stanley - S.Duck, once again I'd let SOMEONE know about the slacking partner T. Worst thing that could happen would be a blackball from the site, but perhaps that would be just as well anyway. I mean, if they're THAT stupid... {G}
Julie - Jenny I would just show them by example clap out the syllables of kids names etc
SubDuck - My school's only go up to 5th now.  Yes, I do remember so rather big 6th graders though. But they hadn't entirely matured into their bodies yet....mostly!
Jackie - I agree, Stanley!
Jenny - right, i am using the clapping method. But what do I say when I tell them what exactly a syllable is
Jackie - Middle school kids are like puppy dogs. That's why I like 'em!
SubDuck - Not my style, unless they REALLY do me wrong. I just make a mental note, and next time I get stuck with them I'm just not quite as cooperative!
Julie - a syllable is a break in a word
Jackie - That works for me, too
Jackie - Sounds like something I'd do, Stanley.
Stanley - I think I could become proficient @ HS, but what for? I'm credentialed Elementary, & I've PLENTY of jobs either there or in MS, SPED, Bilingual...
Jackie - HS is not someplace I'd ever want to go!
Stanley - Gee, can not brushing your teeth go thru the lines? I'm still noshing on my dinner...
Frank - I'm hear, I'm listening and absorbing all the wisdom and teaching dialogue.
Frank - I meant here.
Jackie - I keep forgetting it's 3 hours earlier there.
Stanley - Jackie, I've perhaps done HS less than 10x out of 800 days in the "marketplace." It wasn't awful, but I did NOT feel comfortable...
Jackie - I thought everyone else must be falling asleep like I am.
SubDuck - I'm back...was throwing the cabbage in my pot of cornbeef...
Jackie - When I first strted subbing my kids were in HS, so didn't go there. I really have no desire to now. 8th grade is enough of a challenge for me.
Stanley - Frank, have you checked out the SubBoard? I wish *I* had known about it when I started. [Of course, I'm not sure it was there in '96!]
Sue - hi all-subbing high school is easy but boring
Frank - No I haven't, I will now. Thanks.
Stanley - Hello, Sue! Jackie, where do you sub?
Jackie - I would imagine it would be.
Jackie - Stanley, I sub in k-8 in our district. But this year it's been mostly elementary.
Sue - I am currently in 1/2 day daily sub job-3rd grade Title I-Reading,English,Spelling,Handwriting
Stanley - S.Duck, my parents founded one of San Diego's oldest restaurants. (We sold in '93 because of lease problems.) We actually used to corn our own briskets. Sooooooo much better than store bought!
Jackie - That means small groups, right, Sue?
Sue - I sub in afternoon and have homebound 8th grade student
Jackie - Sounds like you have your hands full.
Sue - This is odd job-entire 3rd grade class-13 students-small school
Jackie - Stanley, you're making me hungry! LOL
SubDuck - Mmmmm, sounds good Stanley.... do you still corn your own for personal use? You'll have to send me one.
Stanley - Also, Sue, do they pay you enough that way? Also, are you able to sub elsewhere the OTHER 1/2 of the day?
Jackie - What a great number of students for a third grade class.
Frank - I just came from two two hour graduate classes, I'm exhausted. Have a good night all.
Stanley - Sue, you already answered that & I didn't see... I freeze the screen while typing of I go even MORE nutso than I already am! <G>
Sue - been pretty lucky-2 other schools close work in afternoon and when not work homebound couple hours-$14 hr
SubDuck - U 2 Stanley...bye, bye.
Jackie - Have to go because hubby's home. Have a great Thanksgiving, all.
Stanley - Frank, GOOD LUCK to you! And, remember, you're going about "this" precisely the way I wish I WOULD have!
SubDuck - 'night Jackie, you have a great Tday too!!
Sue - After 11 days I received $90 day instead 88-after 30 last THur get 100 % teacher pay for 1/2 day been there 30 days now
Stanley - Jackie, S.Duck -- enjoyed "chatting" with you!
Sue - How long you all been subbing?
Stanley - Sue, that sounds like reasonable pay if you can supplement it with 1/2 days of subbing. Plus, just guessing... you probably don't have to do much planning?
SubDuck - 20th year for me, Sue...
Sue - I work hard lesson plans papers for 1/2 day 3rd
Stanley - Sue, I'm in my 5th yr, but since I tend to work over 200 days/yr, I prefer to think of it as the number of days...
Sue - Sub-ever try get full-timeor you like subbing?
SubDuck - I'm a "career sub." I quite like it.
Sue - Here we only go 180 days year
Sue - I have been subbing 9
SubDuck - Where are you located Sue?
Stanley - Sue, I had a leave replacement contract for about the last 1/2 of last yr. I'm hoping for something "permanent" in '01/'02.
Sue - WV
Stanley - Sue, I'm in multiple districts, one of which is multi-tracked yr around. Another has 2 multi-tracked yr around schools. I **LOVE** kids, so I'm happy with all the "action" I can pick up!
Stanley - Is there much demand for Ts in WV, Sue?
Sue - no-last couple yrs more demand than before
Stanley - Hey, any one still here? They don't evict us @ 10 EST, you know! {G}
Stanley - So, Sue, you're saying you WANT a contract but haven't been able to land one? S.Duck, from what I heard today, getting a contract in L.A. Unified isn't difficult at all!
SubDuck - Was checking on my plain 'ol store bought corned beef and cabbage din din. It's about done, and I'm overdue to feed my troops!
Sue - at LA once-did not like it-liked Palm Sprimngs
SubDuck - Yes Stanley, seems they are hiring anybody these days!
Stanley - Filly -- but from L.A.? I'm in San Diego. Are you a Sub, Filly?
Stanley - Sue, you weren't in very nice areas, though, truthfully, I've not been to L.A. in perhaps 20 yrs! (Native San Diegans ain't much for L.A., by & large!) <G>
Sue - I knew i was in bad part LA
Filly-Puggy - i only teach like 7 times a month it is just a part time job...
Filly-Puggy - my real job is much better
Stanley - Filly, but is that subbing 7x/mo? Also, what district?
Filly-Puggy - i am really a paramedic for the fbi i teach kids french sub
Stanley - Filly, I like your use of "real job!" Normally I don't feel like teaching is a job, though, I'm stil QUITE happy when the weekend rolls around!
Filly-Puggy - me too
Stanley - Wow -- fluent in French? Do you teach in a public or private school?
Filly-Puggy - both
Stanley - And, do you mean "fbi" as in G-men? <G>
Filly-Puggy - have you ever seen "X-files" sort of like that only no aliens mainley murders
Stanley - Sue, MOST (but not all) schools around here are just off on Thurs & Fri.
Sue - We used only get WEd-Fri off and all older kids went deer hunting or skipped so they give us all week.
Stanley - Interesting... A month or so ago I showed the movie "October Sky" while in a ROUGH G-8 class. The setting was, I believe, in WV coal mines. Are you familiar with it?
Sue - I did not see that-ever see Matewan-coal mining movie
Stanley - It was about a boy who "escaped" by winning the National Science Fair. I believe it was based upon fact.
Sue - I don't recall that one
Stanley - Hola, Filly! Say, you've QUITE a résumé! What did you major in in college?
Filly-Puggy - criminology and french
Filly-Puggy - i also went to medical school for 3 years
Stanley - That G-8 was made up of barrio kids. They didn't appreciate it as much as I would have liked, but it was still OK. The overlying theme was how a father & son relate to one another, & THAT they could get into...
Stanley - Filly, my sis [only sib] & her husband are both MDs. Where'd you go to school for Med? They started in Chile, finishing @ Loyola Stritch in Chicago.
Filly-Puggy - toronto
Stanley - tiddy money... If you're a sub, THAT is the "handle" **I** should have chosen! LOL
Stanley - Ah, so the French comes from having lived in Canada?
Filly-Puggy - yes i grew up in toronto
Filly-Puggy - what do you teach
Stanley - I started Spanish when I was 8, though we didn't actually get "1st yr" until 9th Grade. I'm a **HUGE** proponent of kids knowing more than 1 language!!
Stanley - I've an Elementary Credential, but I've not landed a "permanent" contract. [I was a leave replacer last yr.]
Filly-Puggy - i speak spanish too
Stanley - Also, Filly, where did you take the course in San Diego? I've done stuff @ both SDSU & UCSD. My BA is from UC Riverside.
tiddy_money - what stanley??
Filly-Puggy - it was not school is was for horse care
Stanley - Filly, you picked it up readily from having known French?
tiddy_money - me too puggy...well a little
