Substitute Teachers Meet the 3rd Monday of each Month
Stanley - Say, pambre: Did you already get a job for tomorrow?
MOJan - so, did anyone get a sub job today?
BB - I did. 8th grade; language arts; kids were REALLY good!
MOJan - i did, but more snow came and we went home at 12:30
MOJan - i had 7th language arts they were good until they heard early dismissal
BB - I'm in Mid-Calif so we don't have the weather most of you have mentioned.
MOJan - i am tired of snow, we only had a 1/2 day last week and then today too, does not look good for school tomorrow
BB - Just "sugar highs" to make the teachers call in sick
pambre - If I work tueday it will be in BD room, and they will call till they get thru.
Stanley - LOL, pambre! Are you tryin' to say they have trouble finding people for that stuff? {G} BTW, @ what grade level do you do BD?
Cheryl R - Hi MOJan! Did you work today?
MOJan - yes, 7th language arts
MOJan - did you?
Cheryl R - Pambre, where are you?
Cheryl R - no I didn't.
pambre - Today I had 3-4 grade BD, Same tuesday if teacher's flight does not make it into chicago tonite.
MOJan - good luck with the flight, i think Chi is getting more yucky snow
pambre - I live in Aurora, Il.
Stanley - MOJan, Are you a MS specialist? I do it, but I try not to take TOO many of them. You know what they say about playing Russian roulette! {G}
MOJan - no, only a BA
MOJan - i think maybe i do not know what you mean stanly...lol at me! {sorry}
Stanley - pambre, I would consider BD @ that age, though I've never actually done it. [Lots of LH or learning handicapped, however.]
Cheryl R - So glad to actually get a chance to talk with so many people that I usually just read messages from.
Jackie - I've done very little special ed this year, but have in the past.
Stanley - MOJan, Middle School specialist -- as in 1 who takes a preponderance of MS jobs.
MOJan - no, not me, but our 7/8 graders are a neat bunch of kids and my husband has taught 7th grade for 23 years!
BB - Stanley, my FIRST sub was ms and no lesson plans left. Tell me I about gave up on that age! Luckily my next ms was completely different!
Jackie - MS without plans is a nightmare!
Stanley - BB, I've only had 1 MS assignment w/o plans, & by then I was a "bloodied" vet, so I got by. Won't work for that clown again, however! {G}
pambre - MS without plans is totally unacceptable!
BB - Plus 95% spoke Spanish around me with total lack of respect. My last two assignments were in a different school and just wonderful
BB - I know what you mean! If teachers think THEY can be picky - just watch us!
Jackie - The teacher's in our district have figured out how picking us subs can be. They're very nice to me!
Stanley - Do you speak any Spanish, BB?
knightmom - Room, I'm subbing in 1st grade tomorrow (if school isn't cancelled) Any neat things to do for Christmas or Holiday ideas for them?
knightmom - I am in Milw, Wisc, right by Lake Michigan and we are getting 6-10 inches tonight and tomorrow
MOJan - we counted to 15 in Spanish during 1st grade calendar time, they loved it!
Jackie - Chances are the teacher has left a ton of stuff. If not, I'm sure their are lots of people who can help here.
Cheryl R - Sure hope that I am working tomorrow. I don't want to work at Part-time job tomorrow instead.
BB - Question - anyone read the "teaching with Love and Logic" that the other board recommends? good for this ms group?
MOJan - i am suppose to do 6th grade science, assuming we will have school, (yea right!)
Stanley - MOJan, Where was it you had a bilingual G-1? I had a BG-3 today, but I'm reasonably fluent...
knightmom - Not yet BB, haven't rermembered to get it from library when I was there.. I will soon though. Heard it was good.
Ruff - I'm a retired teacher and subbing partime.
MOJan - we are not bilingual, I just used the counting to give them something different to do. My Spanish is limited to High school level about a million years ago!
pambre - I have taught Bil. when our 1 Bil. sub is out. The student must rise to the occasion as I have no spanish.
BB - I working through "Positive Discipline Teacher's guide from A to Z" and it is great. some of it unrealistic for subs but I'm getting some help
Stanley - BB, Unless I'm getting mixed up, I believe they talk a lot about "Love & Logic" on the Mgmt Board.
knightmom - By the way, Magoo... it's me Barb W. here under a fictitious name I use for chatrooms.
MOJan - i would blame it on the weather Jackie..it is easy to do that in the midwest lately!
Jackie - I've got a recipe that says it dates back to colonial NE
Ruff - Thanks Stanley, this is interesting. Are we all subs?
BB - Stanley, you are right but I needed that type of advice when I hit that bad class and their posts have helped!
MOJan - I am, and I LOVE IT!!!
pambre - Ruff, you have written a book? Yes or no.
Ruff - Yes, Pam, it tis I.
Jackie - I think most of us could write a book about subbing.
pambre - What made you want to write it?
Ruff - I wrote it because there were none available. Local subs were telling me awful stories of classroom problems.
Magoo - Ruff--what is the title of your book?
Ruff - I called it "Substitute Teacher's Guide". It is only 26 pages, and leaves you with a good feeling.
knightmom - Ok, back to business...help with 1st grade.. needing something fun for the holidays to do tomorrow. PLease?
Cheryl R - I usually go by Mrs R since my last name is Ringen but the kids and adults make it Ring and Ringer.
pambre - I only put my name up after a student asks. Sometimes I wait all morning for someone to ask.
knightmom - Why, Pambre?
Magoo - I make kids use my name instead of 'Mrs. F.' but then, we all know what a terror I can be............
Ruff - I put my name on the board with 3-D letters and that grabs them immediately.
knightmom - Good idea, Ruff.. Hope I can be that artisitic tomorrow.
Jackie - I put my name on the board in the two elementary schools I don't visit as often. The kids in the other two schools all know me (which is why they hide under the desk when they see me coming)
Ruff - I teach the kids how in 3 minutes. They love it and then get right down to business.
pambre - I wait to because often middle schooler and HS do not like to tell subs their names. Thus I can model process of name asking and ans.
knightmom - Ruff, ideas for 1st grade when I have no idea of the lesson plans or units working on.
Jackie - I never thought about it that way, Pambre, but you're absolutely right.
Stanley - pambre, Please illucidate re not putting up your name. I've NOT heard such a strategy previously!
knightmom - Pambre, how about showing them proper way of introducing yourself to someone by being a model of it. Saying Hello, my name is Mrs. "W". ....
Jackie - That probably wouldn't work with middle school kids.
Cheryl R - I usually put up my name becasue I usually have 1st through 5th graders and they LOVE to know your name.
knightmom - I've done it ES MS and HS. Works all over for me.
Stanley - Magoo, I thought of PRECISELY that as I was typing. [What is it they say about great (or is that grated?) minds?] {G}
pambre - Children names are important to them. Knowing someones name is a power . Children recognize this. If this makes sense, Name sharing is an important process.
knightmom - You are the model of appropriate behavior, right, so showing them how to introduce themselves is a good thing, I think.
MOJan - my name is sort of hard to say, so I just teell the little ones, Mrs. K
Jackie - Probably depends on where you're working. I was really mostly joking. As I said, our middle school kids all know my name because I've been their "favorite" sub since first grade.
Ruff - Knightmom, I do not have hands on experience with a class of 1st graders. I would, however, suggest bringing a video and some word games.
Magoo - First grade tomorrow? Hmmmmm. How about playing Around the World with the ABC's ?? They should know those by now, and they'd feel good getting them right. You could read them "Night Before Ch." or "Legend of the Poins.", then have them color poinsettias or make them w/const. paper.
Jackie - Santa Clause puppets using lunch bags as a base work too.
knightmom - Videos are out...our district has a Master list to go from and I cannot bring my own in wothout prior author... etc. Game suggestions are good.. now I have to find books in library before school.
Ruff - Go on line and search, search, search. There are lots of educational classroom games that are free for downloading.
Cheryl R - I'm trying to get a full time job and subbing till that happens.
knightmom - Thanks. How about another game idea, gang?
Magoo - knightmom---how about word bingo?? Make a graph with 'free' in the middle, and 15-20 easy words, use unifex cubes, etc. for markers
knightmom - Ok, Ruff, should I go to lesson plans site or???
pambre - My only games are silent ball and pioson apple.
Ruff - Cheryl, do you have your name in for a job already?
MOJan - kids in the lower grades love it when I caome because I squeeze in ytime to play simon says!! they beg for it!!
Cheryl R - Magoo, good idea- Bingo Game
Cheryl R - I send resumes out practically every week.
Jackie - Seven up is a favorite with the little ones I teach.
MOJan - the first direction simon gives is be silent!! no more noise for a while
Ruff - Try having them draw a picture of their home, pet, teacher, or other?
knightmom - Oh, I forget Simon Says ( poor memory , here!) Thanks everyone. I will write all this down before I forget. Tomorrow will be neat cause 1st graders give hugs!
MOJan - that is for sure! hugs are good
Jackie - 1st graders are neat!
Stanley - k.mom, Sorry if I missed it, but how do you already know you won't have plans?
Ruff - Cheryl, see whether you can get a recommendation from an administrator in one of the schools you sub for.
knightmom - I should have plans, but somehow, like always happens, the plans don't cover the whole time period the teacher wrote out for. I wanted something for filler, or in case there is indoor recess, which I am sure there will be cause of our 10 " tonight.
Magoo - knightmom---get a copy of LIWilder's House on the Prairie, turn to pg. 248, and read the kids about what Laura and Mary got for Christmas when they were about first grade age. I do that every year, no matter what grade, and I take 'visuals'.
MOJan - neat idea!
pambre - Ruff, which is more FUN- subbing or "teaching"
pambre - Magoo- wonderfull idea!
Cheryl R - I actually had a long term job last year for four months in 3rd grade which I loved. This year I had a 2nd but the school and environment were practically killing me literally. Took a month long break and tried Bank telling and Temping in offices.
Ruff - Knightmom, do you play a musical instrument? Sing some songs..have them teach you some.
Cheryl R - So now I am back to subbing.
Magoo - knightmom--visuals for that reading are: 1 peppermint stick, 1 tin cup, 1 penny, and 1 Hostess cupcake (with the icing peeled off), crumbled.m
Jackie - It's hard to teach at a level you don't enjoy. Hang in there. The right job will come along.
MOJan - i can not sing at all and pre schoolers begged to sing kids will not be critical, trust me!
Jackie - Little ones love to sing. The sillier the song the better.
Stanley - A book I HIGHLY recommend for Elementary "fillers" is "Fables" by Arnold Lobel. If I push it I can read one in about 3 mins. Or, there is one that I've extended to upwards of an hour. Now THAT's what I call versatility!
Magoo - Christmas songs, YES!!! "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer"----has anyone heard the one that refers to the 'election'?? Or the song about the kid who wants a hippo? Cracks me up!
Cheryl R - Have i mentioned yet that I work part time at a teacher supply store?  I Love it and the people I work for and with.
knightmom - Wonderful ideas, guys. I love you all for this! You are fantastic!...WE ARE ALL FANTASTIC!
Jackie - I'd spend my whole paycheck in a place like that!
MOJan - no, Magoo have not heard those songs about the hipppo and election
Ruff - Write a story and leave out all the adjectives. Have the kids name a description, color, etc. and you fill in the blanks. It's funny!
Cheryl R - Well it's easy not to if you're not teaching at the moment.
Jackie - Or the incoperable send-up of Jingle Bells the kids love, with words that aren't printable here?
knightmom - Stanley, I've used the Fables book, too. Want to get my own copy!
Stanley - pambre: Your question about what is more fun -- I'd opt for subbing because of the reduced responsibility & getting to meet HUGE #'s of kids.
Cheryl R - Stanley? Did I shock you or Anyone?
Jackie - true Cheryl
MOJan - I like subbing because you get to watch the kids grow up
Cheryl R - I actually miss being the teacher....
Ruff - Another idea would be to make up a story using items they name. Make list on board and incorporate into story.
Jackie - Subbing is easier in some ways because you don't need to deal with reports cards, parents, etc. On the other hand, when you teach full time you know where you'll be every day.
Cheryl R - Meant that to look sad. not mad,
pambre - My feeling too MOJAN
Jackie - That's fun, too. I love watching the high school careers of all the kids I've taught.
Stanley - Cheryl... I think I missed something? Shocked? About what? I'm a Sub, remember! {G}
Magoo - Cheryl, you kid, you, I worked in a bank once for 10 months...disaster...I was NOT with the public, thank heaven....but the pres. caught me hanging a rubber bat in the elevator at Halloween....and then I made a beach out of the little thing that sits outside the elevator with sand in it....put one of those teeny paper umbrellas in it....r umb
knightmom - I like subbing, although it is my first year. No lesson plans to dream up, no teacher meetings, no parents to deal with ( cept for one who cmplained about the homework I gave her daughter the night before... took THEN 2 1/2 hours to do 1 sheet of 3 questions, read and do 10 math problems.
Cheryl R - Magoo, I lasted 2 (two) weeks. I hated it.
Jackie - Magoo, you crack me up!
knightmom - Sorry took THEM.. 2 1/2 hours to do it. Was a school district workers kid too.
MOJan - I am trying to get my 17 year old son to go to the bank, sure beats a 45 minute drive to town!
Jackie - Fugures, they're the ones who compain the loudest.
knightmom - Magoo, you are a hoot! Keep us smiling!
MOJan - (get a bank job)
Ruff - Goodnight from California. You are a fun group.
knightmom - Got that right Jackie ( my sister's name )
Stanley - Jackie, How many assignments do you get prior to the day of? Since most of mine come that way, I find I don't mind the changing from one site to another.
knightmom - Goodnight Ruff, and thanks so much for all the great ideas. I'll let you know on the board how they worked, OK?
Jackie - Most of mine are way in advance. But there's a nice predictability about going to the same classroom everyday that we subs don't get.
Magoo - Getting serious for a moment...thanks for the support re the "battle" with TPOV, peeps. It really means a lot to me. I do not understand that person's attitude, and am trying to just IGNORE, when what I really want to do is unleash the Irish tongue........
knightmom - I never get more than a night before call... usually a wake up at 6:30am call is the norm.
Cheryl R - MOJan who are you talking to?
Jackie - That will change the longer you sub, knightmom
MOJan - you are welcome, Magoo, just don't let tpov drive you away, I would miss your humor and input!
Cheryl R - I usually get calls at 6:30 am
MOJan - i don't know, actually, Cheryl I think I had a lapse! sorry..
Magoo - Tomorrow I am in a 3td grade, just in the morning. Our school is out at 3 on Wed. Teachers don't dare be absent on that day!! Last week I worked every day, was in 4 different rooms.
knightmom - Magoo, it seems TPOV keeps couching her/his comments in terminology and references that are not to the heart of the emotion we are talking about on the board with our posts. Yes?
pambre - I gat calls nite before because I do all room, thus I am saved for sick teachers. Makes for poor lesson plans.
Jackie - Have to fold my son's laundry and make his bed. Maybe I should have left him at college. LOL
Magoo - MOJan, I've asked before, but don't remember, where are you??
Cheryl R - Jackie, make him do it, he's a big boy, right?
Jackie - Nite, all. See you on the board.
knightmom - I am low on the totem pole for seniority on sub list, so I know I get called last if at all, like today. If I can keep this going financially, I'd love to keep subbing BUT, I just saw an ad for a $2500 sign on bonus for Pharmacy Tech's at a hospital. So tempting....
pambre - Jackie I also agree that young adults are such "fun".
MOJan - I am in northeast Missouri, very rural
Stanley - k.mom, Getting jobs in advance ALMOST isn't subbing, IMHO. Speaking of which... since my last post here the 'puter just called & offered me one for tomorrow. BG-1 & I've worked for the T previously. I snapped it up -- jobs are BIG TIME scarce this week
Jackie - Yeah, but he's hardly ever home, so I'll do it this once. He'd never ask me to.
MOJan - bye, jackie
knightmom - Nite, Jackie, Mine was coming home Wed, now it's Fri cause he's drumming with a band for a wedding on Fri. So now I have to druve 4 hours to go get him and then 4 hours home!! What we do for our kids!
Magoo - knightmom, I have no idea what you just said, but I think I agree with you.
Stanley - Jackie, Have a G R E A T Holiday!!
MOJan - we had a 4 hour drive to get our daughter, last week, one of many snow days!
pambre - Good nite. See you all on the board!
knightmom - Yes, a blind lady who is just superb and is great about asking what I will and will not accept and assigning me on that. SHe cares too about the subd and whhat we go through.
Stanley - Cheryl, Do you know where Hopkinton is? My friend Lisa will be flying here [San Diego] from there on Thurs! Yippee!!
knightmom - We had a situation with subbing for a para (aide) getting $50.00/day versus for a teacher and getting $80.00/day. Needless to say, not many aides are being subbed for these days.
Stanley - Cheryl & k.mom, The main problem I have with human gatekeepers is that they're seldom able to work that far ahead. Plus, with time I can learn how to manipulate a call-in computer so as to optimize by ahead bookings.
Cheryl R - I've actually had a human call me two months ahead. The entire school was out that day. ALL the kids behaved though
knightmom - We never get real far ahead bookings here. Maybe a few days or the week ahead but not much more. Our gatekeeper (?) has to get the calls from the teachers first, and needless to say, they don't call that far in advance much. One ditrict I have my name in has only called me 4 times. Their teachers are under strict rules NOT to have a sub unless it is dire emergency.
Stanley - Cheryl, You're right about the Marathon. Lisa ALWAYS laughs about the porta-potties they put outside her house then!  As for our weather... it was in the 70's today. Can you smell the chlorine I'm packin'? [Went for a swim today after work!]
Magoo - Leaving now, ***waving good-by as I slide out the door, down the sidewalk, into the street, and am run over by a trolley***
Stanley - Going, going...
Stanley - {{{{ poof !!! }}}}
