I teach at a state university and heartily agree with almost
everything said above...especially the comments about the
path to teaching at a Community College. High school teaching
is not that much of a consideration.
Luckily (and I do mean luck was involved) I am a tenured full
professor. We have wonderful lecturers here (called adjunct
professors in some colleges) with masters or Ph.D.s and they
are underpaid and sometimes treated like crap. I am proud to
say my department values our lecturers and tries to treat
them as best we can (but have no control over their pay or
status). Several of them are my best friends. Many of our
lecturers who can teach General Education courses also teach
at community colleges.
From your posts it sounds like you don't really have a
passion yet but are exploring. My suggestion is to go full
steam ahead and try everything you think you would like. That
is how I got into university teaching. I got downsized from
the American automobile industry in 1982 and made a complete
career change into teaching. I jumped in and loved it.
Note: Although I am tenured at my university, I have taught
as a part-time lecturer at three other private and public
universities at the undergrad, masters, and doctoral levels
(both face-to-face and on-line). Lecturer pay and treatment
varied from school-to-school.
