I have taught on a 4X4 block schedule since the early 90s.
Although there is much debate about the block schedule, most
of the debate is based upon feelings rather than research.
As a school, we have reviewed the block twice and elected to
stay on this schedule because we have not found good reasons
to change. Despite our low SEC standing, our test scores are
quite a bit higher than surrounding schools and state
averages. Our dropout rate and failure rates are lower; our
disciplinary problems small.
I have included an article link which has a good
bibliography for further research.
