Some have almost given up, but when they find out they will be able to succeed, then they will do the work I assign to help them. A few students have given up, and I must work hard to convince them to try again. Most will, and most find success when they do the work. Some of my students get quite "turned on" to learning, when they discover how much my concrete, multi-sensory, applied phonics method helps them. Yes, I think when a student is taught the way she/he learns, he/she wants to learn.
