Re: Re:Kids who have special needs are just like typical kids

Some of them WANT to learn, can't WAIT to learn. Sometimes they
excel in one area, and might appear not to care in other areas.
Just like most of the kids in schools.
This is what kids said in a recent report from the California
Dropout Research Project (quoted from the Fresno Bee):
The report found that "teacher-student relationships have a strong
influence on students' decisions to stay in school."
"An absence of support from teachers was a reason often given by
students for dropping out. Students reported feeling
misunderstood by teachers and also expressed disillusion with
teachers who did not give them the support they needed."
"The students said that coaches, counselors, and friends also can
provide a boost in school that can drive them to persevere."
"Just one class in a subject that fascinates them, such as sports,
electronics, art or auto repair can make the entire rest of the
day worth getting up for."
"The researchers said the students are eager to see how they can
apply what they are learning to real life; they want teachers to
help them understand how classes will be useful to them later."
"...most of the ninth-graders, regardless of their risk for
dropping out, are optimistic and involved in school, eager to
participate and have more positive experiences in school. They
want to graduate."
The Bee editorial concludes: "We ... need educators and other
adults in the community who are committed and equipped to give our
students intellectual perspiration--and also inspiration."
