Classroom Management Help

This year, I am teaching pre-k.

I am wondering if anyone has great ideas for classroom management. Normally, I do fine with classroom management, however, this year, I have students who constantly scream out, hit/push, are verbally disrespectful, are out of their seat without permission, etc.

I am having a ROUGH time. Please send me your ideas.

Flacka (long answer) I have taught preK and it is a different beast than grades 1+. You are an experienced teacher working with inexperienced students. They don't already know how to do "school things" so you are the one to teach it so when they come to 1st grade and beyond they know the routine.

They don't already know how to do "school things" so you are the one to teach it so when they come to 1st grade and beyond they know the routine.

My advice is to stop whatever you are doing and go back to the beginning and teach them the routines and expectations. You must break these routines down into 1 step tasks , be consistent, and review it everyday for days and weeks until they get it. Example: coming to the rug from their seats. "Boys and girls, stand up." (check and walk over to those who haven't and quietly remind him/her to stand up). "I want you to push in your chair and stand behind it." (check that everyone has done it, wait for those who haven't and help those who need help). "Jenny, can you WALK to the rug and sit right here?", Show her where to sit, and HOW to sit. "Look at what a great job Jenny did". "Ryan, can you WLAK to the rug and sit right here just like Jenny did?" (Help him and if he runs, send him back to his chair and have him walk. Give him 1 more chance and then chose someone else. Go back to him after a few children have done it right. When they have all finally made it to the rug and are sitting the way you want them to, get ready to read them a story but remind them that they are to be sitting criss-cross applesauce with their hands in their lap. I had picture cards that showed a child sitting with their bottom on the floor and legs crossed, one with hands in their lap, one with ears listening, one with eyes looking, and one with mouth closed. I found it on the internet as "give me five" or something like that. Before I began each lesson on the rug I told them to give me 5 and we went through the cards one at a time and I checked to compliance. After awhile I could just say "give me 5" and they knew what was expected.

Now, you are going to have to do this for everything as you re- teach them the behaviors you want. Send them back to start over as often as you need to and don't move on until everyone can demonstrate the behavior you want. It will seem like it takes hours to get them to line up, come to the rug or whatever but after awhile when you tell them to line up, they will know how you wan them to do it - walking, no pushing, etc. Don't be afraid to review and reteach this skills as needed (and it will be needed!)

Remember that they have a VERY short attention span and can only sit for about 5 min before they need to move so build in LOTS of movement into the day. Sometimes it's just stand up and stomp their feet 5 times like a big monster (count the stomps - it's math LOL),

They want to please adults so they will do what you want but first you have to let them know what it is that you want them to do and more importantly, HOW you want them to do it.
