A Taste of YogaKids

Taste of YogaKids Seminar
Attn: Teachers!
Physical fitness has become a priority in the last year. As
of 2006, State Requirements The North Carolina State Board
of Education, in its revised Healthy Active Children policy
regarding physical education in public schools, requires
that Students in grades K-8 receive a minimum of 30 minutes
daily physical activity as PE instruction and/or other
physical activity.
The YogaKids program addresses these needs. The Taste of
YogaKids Seminar introduces teachers to an extensive amount
of exercises they can easily use in the classroom. These
include movements to energize, to calm, to help focus and
to prepare students for a test.
However, the YogaKids program isn’t just about exercise.
Based on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences,
the YogaKids program provides methods of teaching a variety
of subjects using movement as the foundation. The State
Board of Education’s “Balanced Curriculum” document of 2003
details not only Multiple Intelligence teaching, but also
highlights “Meeting the Needs of All Children”. It states
“School time must be allocated not only to meeting the
intellectual needs of our students but to meeting their
social, emotional, and physical needs as well. Children
learn differently, and schools need to know how to identify
individual needs and provide instruction that meets those
needs.”
The Taste of YogaKids Seminar gives teachers valuable tools
they can implement right away. It provides examples of
integrating art, music, reading, math and language skills
around a common theme. This is a wonderful program that is
immediately applicable to the classroom.
