For 60 years, Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D),
a national nonprofit, volunteer organization, has been the
leading producer of accessible educational materials for
students with disabilities such as visual impairment or
dyslexia that make reading standard print difficult or
impossible. With titles available in every subject area
and grade level from kindergarten through graduate
studies, RFB&D’s digitally recorded textbooks are
effective learning tools for students challenged by the
printed page.
All 38,000 of our books are recorded in the human voice
which allows students to hear proper voice inflection,
pronunciation and prosody. Teachers have provided
feedback that this is especially important for literature
books and textbooks. We provide the entire textbook or
book, not portions of the books as many commercial
publishers do.
Purpose:
•To provide students with print-related disabilities with
access to grade-level curriculum and literature
•To support teaching and administrative staff in meeting
the education objectives and accommodations outlined in
their students’ annual Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Benefits to Students: Research from Johns Hopkins, Tufts
and Rutgers
•Improved content acquisition
•Independence – students can learn on their own through
listening and not have to depend on others to read to them
•Gives them the ability to keep pace with their peers
•Gives them the tools they need to succeed
•Increases their self-esteem
•Keeps students in school!
