Created by professional artist and art teacher Marilyn
Brackney, this unusual alphabet was inspired by
architectural details found on buildings in historic
downtown Columbus, Indiana. Brackney searched for the
letters over a two-year period, and the alphabet was
created to commemorate the city's celebration of the 500th
anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of America.
Many of the shapes and designs were taken from iron
castings and limestone carvings typically seen on 19th
Century architecture across the United States, so some of
the architectural elements may appear in your town, too.
Details shown include window hoods, gables, facade
decorations, quoins, fencing,and brickwork.
In the center of the piece, there is one object represented
for each letter of the alphabet. Since nature has inspired
artists and architects for centuries, Brackney drew objects
such as the acorn and yellow poplar leaf to represent the
letters. Columbus landmarks or events represent the others.
Each alphabet comes with a list of the letters and their
respective symbols.
If you collect alphabets, this will make a great addition
to your gallery, and displaying the poster in your
classroom may encourage your students to look at
architecture in a new way. It also may help them appreciate
the beauty of older structures, and Brackney hopes the
piece will encourage historic preservation.
Printed in a limited edition of 600 copies on heavy stock,
each print is signed and numbered. The poster measures
17.25" x 29", and the total cost is $17.50 each, including
$2.50 postage in the contiguous United States. For shipping
costs for multiple copies or for posters mailed to Alaska
or Hawaii, write for postal rates. Indiana residents,
please add 7% sales tax.
