teacher-creatred activities from various areas of the
curriculum that are based around story of The Polar
Express. All activities are in PDF format and are ready
for you to print out and use in centers, small groups,
large groups or take home bags. In addition to the 23
activities described below, the cd-rom also has a full
color binder cover and activity letter which explains how
to do each activity. The only item needed that is not
included are jingle bells for the Jingle Bell graph and a

1. Train Measuring: Use a ruler to measure the length of
each train in centimeters.
2. Train Measurement Comparison: Use this page with the
train measuring page. Answer the questions about the
lengths of the trains.
3. Right On Track Sentence Building: Use the word tiles to
build a 3 to 5 word sentence on the train.
4. Jingle Bell Graph: Sort the jingle bells according to
size and then complete the graph.
5. Initial Sound Activity: Fill in the blank with the
letter needed to complete the word.
6. Story Starter: Finish the story from the story starter.
7. What Time Is It?: Draw the hands on the clocks to match
the time shown.
8. Train Theme Letter Sequence: Fill in the letter that
comes between the letter on the first and last car of the
train.
9. Rhyming Word Train cars: Match the engine to box car
with its rhyming word. There are six pairs of words.
10. Adjective/Noun Match: Draw a line from the adjective
to the noun it describes (uses words from the story)
11. Noun or Verb: Read the word from the story, decide if
it is a noun (person, place or thing) or a verb (action).
Circle the correct answer.
12. Count by Twos: Put the train cars in order counting by
twos.
13. Story Sequencing: Write a sentence in each train car
that tells what happens at the beginning, middle and end
of The Polar Express.
14. Picture/Word Matching (Vocabulary-lower level): Match
each picture card to the card with its correct name.
15. Word/Definition Matching (Vocabulary-upper level):
Match each vocabulary word to its correct definition card.
16. Creative Writing: Write and draw what you would see
out the window if you were riding on the Polar Express.
17. Math Story Problems: Solve the story themed math
problems using addition or subtraction.
18. Word Search: Find twelve story themed words in the
word search. (All words are up & down or across-no
diagonal or backwards words)
19. All About Van Allsburg: Read a short autobiography
written by the author of the Polar Express, Chris Van
Allsburg
20. Animals of the North Pole: Circle the animals you
might see if you visited the North Pole.
21. Shape Train: Identify the shapes and then cut/paste
them to create your own train.
22. Tangram Penguins: Use the tangram pieces to create
various forms of penguins (Instruction sheet contains nine
different penguins to create using tangrams)
23. Polar Express Patterns: Use the picture cutouts to
create various patterns (ABAB, AABAAB, ABBABB, ABCABC,
ABCD, etc) Pictures include a jingle bell, the Polar
Express, Santa Claus and a pocket.)
