ELA 6th
Jul 4, 2016
Hi. I'm new to teaching 6th grade ELA. My classes will be
blocked, so I'll have each class for about 104 minutes. My
question is, to what extent do you use textbooks in your ELA
class? My school doesn't use grammar textbooks at
all...they just do some mini-lessons and incorporate it via
bellwork. Spelling isn't taught at all.
They do rely fairly heavily on the literature text, but they
seem to spend a lot of time on one story. They might play
the audio of it for students to hear, then have them read it
round-robin style, then have them answer the textbook
questions, as well as lots of other activities. Is this how
most ELA classes work?
