Post: I won't Learn
Posted by Bill on 4/18/08
Susan, I'm reminded of Esme Codell's "trouble basket" with which she greeted her students at the door. The students pantomimed dropping their troubles into the basket before they enter the room. It helped them to imagine that troubles can be extinguished, at least for a short time, and that it is possible to choose to focus on something else. It also indicated to her how heavy her students perceived their burdens to be. I discovered that when I talked to one of my troubled junioir students during the first minute or two of the transition into my class, he was fine. When I didn't, he had "issues." What I didn't get, however, was how the boy got so far along in his schooling and no one had made a record of what worked with him and passed it along to the rest of us.
