I teach 9th grade English, and I usually end up with these
students because I speak Spanish. These students are a joy
to teach. They are respectful and will work their hearts out
if I spend a little extra time with them to show them what
they are to do. When I have to have a parent conference,
it is not "What are you doing to make my kid fail?" It
is "What can we do to help you teach our child?" Illegal or
not, these people respect the teacher in ways that many
Americans do not. I am not, and don't want to be, an ESL
teacher, but I like having these students in my classes.
