Post: Defensive
Posted by Tricia on 8/28/08
I find it unfortunate and discouraging that so many parents are unwilling to have an open mind about what they might improve upon in their parenting. It seems that defensiveness is a common response to feeling that one's parenting is being criticized. Instead, wouldn't it be better to research and reflect? Kohn has done a lot of research and has written many books. In Unconditional Parenting, he sites many studies that support his ideas and references sources of his information. Modeling morality and reason to toddlers is, in my opinion, better than teaching them that they are a lot like the family dog. Developmentally, toddlers may not have the self control to follow orders, so diversion and distraction are beneficial tactics to accompany reason and morality. Just think about what how you are treating your child is teaching him or her.
